I don't understand why people think the government NASA etc would bother going to all this effort to cover it up surely they would have just stuck with Eratosthenes is crazy, but they didn't and why bother. It seems like a waste of time and effort to make up such a fabrication and I cant be convinced that anyone would benefit from creating such a facade or even how anyone could benefit. If the earth was flat then surely they would just say it was flat... Someone said to me once 'It's because the horizon is always flat even from up really high including from a plane' - So I suppose if that's the mindset then.....

Where do you get that everyone thought Eratosthenes was crazy? He was a highly respected man. The problem with much of the knowledge he discovered was, no one knew quite how to apply it. And remember also, the vast majority of the people on Earth at the time were uneducated and things like the size of the Earth and its distance from the Sun didn't much enter into their everyday lives.

I think they believe that the earth is just falling (or rising?) infinitely at a rate in which we would feel it as gravity

God assigns a Guardian Angel and a Gravity Angel to each person at birth. The first keeps them anchored morally, the other keeps them fixed to the Earth. You know how sometimes people just ... disappear? Well, their Gravity Angels either screwed up or were re-assigned and they shot to the edge and up the giant wall of ice and ... that was it.

Round earth theory was popularized by insecure plain-dwellers who envied the vigorous mountain dwellers. Not only is a flat earth common sense, it is much more aesthetically pleasing. A round earth introduces a relativist world where there is no up or down, and the endless "progress" of the planet keeps things stable. Thus there is no longer simply a matter of putting "spin" on the truth, spin itself becomes accepted as truth, and "nothingness" is the basis of the world.

They will say they can't see the sphere. Also considering that if the Earth was flat all the water would be at the center due to gravity but they would counter the laws of physics are incorrect.

Actually if we take their theory literally, we shouldn't have water at all. If we're supposedly moving "up", the water would run off the edge.

To which the answer is a tennis ball doesn't have enough gravity to hold water on its surface but according to these people gravity doesn't exist. I even saw one video that said the Earth doesn't rotate because if it did it would be impossible for a plane to land.

Of course thats preposterous but im curious what is the scientific answer if someone said that?

Since the Earth is spinning, everything else spins with it since it is on Earth. Like when you drive a car. Not only is the cat going, say, 70 mph, but so is everything in it.

From the last time I came across a flat Earth thread, where the OP was a flat Earther:

Elejamie wrote:
  1. How do seasons work on a flat Earth? Because, on a round Earth (and also an Earth rotating around the Sun), this is because the Earth is tilted on its axis (23.5°). In fact, this is why the seasons are completely different in the Southern Hemisphere than they are in the Northern Hemisphere, as one hemipshere ends up getting more light around the other as it orbits the Sun.
  2. Apparently, according to a number of flat Earthists, there's a heavily guarded ice wall surrounding Antarctica which is why nothing's really fallen off. Some say it's 150 feet, other's say higher or lower. My question is: If you think it's the case, then how do you know it exists? Because surely they would've confiscated your camera or wiped your memory or existence if you ever came close to it, right? Also, 150 feet is pitifully small when you've got planes that can go up to 45,000 feet and higher, so it's not like someone could get a plane and try and fly over it.
  3. What would anyone lie the Earth's shape? Seriously, I keep hearing things about how NASA is lying about it because Illuminati/Freemasons/Satan/etc., but what would anyone gain from lying abouts its shape?

And yes, I know I was supposed to write "Why would anyone lie about the Earth's shape?" for that third question but I wasn't awake for very long when I wrote that, so it was probably me combining two sentences into one. Also, just for the record, OP didn't answer my questions (but somebody else did).

Either way, my best guess for why flat Earth is making a big comeback is because B.o.B posted on Twitter his supposed evidence about why the Earth is flat, Neil deGrasse Tyson argued that this wasn't the case and eventually decided to make a rap song about it, Flatline. No, I'm not going to link to it,. And it got a lot of press coverage so people decided to check it out. A good chunk of them might've been trolls and/or other conspiracy theorists, which thanks to the internet gives them a means of spreading their beliefs and arguments (or, in the trolls' case, post a load of crap that would convince anyone). Not sure how much of that's accurate, though, so don't take that as a definite answer.

As for my personal opinion on the whole thing? While I do like my conspiracy theorists (even though I don't really believe in any, I just find them somewhat interesting), I simply cannot stand the whole flat Earth thing. Not only does it not really make any sense from any point of view but they don't really seem to have any real evidence for it from what I've seen*. I mean, say what you want about 9/11 Truthers or Pizzagaters (preferably in a different thread because we'd be going off topic) but at least they try and show some evidence; flat Earthers usually tend to show you a whole bunch of memes, scream "FAKE!" or "CGI!" when you show them evidence countering their argument, go off-topic and talk about other conspiracies (much like the aforementioned B.o.B did in that Flatline song) or, worst case scenario, go into "do your own research" mode. Bonus points if they go on an anti-NASA rant while completely forgetting the Soviet space program, as well as other current space programs like ESA, JAXA, CNSA and Roscosmos (to name a few), that could easily disprove their points.

* If anyone reading this post is a real, genuine flat Earther, please explain your arguments for a flat Earth WITHOUT linking to other sites or YouTube videos (except as sources).

For that second one, I've seen a few people argue that the reason why the government don't shut those people up is because they'd make them martyrs or something along those lines.

Funnily enough I don't think it's actually that hard to prove the whole water staying on the Earth as it spins thing. For example, fill a bucket of water and repeatedly swing it in a circular motion above your head; if you're doing it fast enough then, theoretically, the water should stay in the bucket even when it's upside down (and would spill out otherwise). Probably not the best explanation but it's quick and easy and should hopefully get the point across or the ball rolling.

My cat can go much faster than 70. You're right, though. That airplane's speed is relative to the planet. On the tarmac it is going 0 mph relative to the ground. once it takes off, it might be going 200, 300 mph relative to the earth.
