NSSCRA Discussion Thread

Postby Newmanistan » Wed Feb 07, 2018 5:59 pm

Welcome to the NSSCRA Discussion thread. Read below for how it is scorinated.

The big reason why stock car racing hasn’t been able to get off the ground as much as other motorsports is due to the lack of a true scorinator for it. Spreadsheet-based formulas have been the way the sport has been scorinated, as well as Whittoria using a video game for a couple versions of NSSCRA, with my permission to use the name of the competition for the editions he hosted, since I was well aware of the simulation game (nothing from EA Sports) he was using, and felt it would do a good job.

The real mission for me, though, has been to get xkoranate to work for stock car racing.

So, my trial and error stumbled upon this: Use the “qualifying” feature, instead of the “race” feature of xkoranate to get an average lap time for each driver. In using xkoranate, if I had just one lap of qualifying, the results were too random. If I had five, or higher, the results were too predictable. Three, was an ideal number. Here is a look at five scorinations using five drivers with skill levels applicable to the names I gave them, when doing a “3-lap” qualifying. 20.000 was entered as the track record with a 1.0 variance. This is something that could be changed from track to track.

(Using a Max-10pts: Legenary Driver had 10 pts, Very Successful had 8, Average had 6, Needing To Improve had 4, and Field Filler had 0).

1 Legendary Driver 20.117
2 Very Successful Driver 20.185
3 Average 20.579
4 Field Filler 20.884
5 Needing To Improve Driver 20.907

1 Very Successful Driver 20.160
2 Legendary Driver 20.491
3 Average 20.626
4 Needing To Improve Driver 20.736
5 Field Filler 20.877

1 Legendary Driver 20.126
2 Average 20.298
3 Very Successful Driver 20.361
4 Needing To Improve Driver 20.594
5 Field Filler 20.787

1 Legendary Driver 20.090
2 Average 20.548
3 Field Filler 20.826
4 Needing To Improve Driver 20.951
5 Very Successful Driver 21.101

1 Very Successful Driver 20.243
2 Average 20.276
3 Needing To Improve Driver 20.417
4 Legendary Driver 20.766
5 Field Filler 20.817

Therefore, I then average these five scorinations, to compute the final results based on average lap times. Now, it could be said that this was only a 15 lap race, but that’s not what I have in mind. Think of each scorination as being the drivers average lap time in each fifth of the race.

The final Results would be
1) Legendary (Avg: 20.318)
2) Very Successful (Avg: 20.410)
3) Average (Avg: 20.465)
4) Needing To Improve (Avg: 20.721)
5) Field Filler (Avg: 20.838)

Now, you may see that and think, “where was the randomness”, note that Very Successful and Average are very close, and there was two points of skill separating them. Everyone will start with the same skill (since there are no rankings now, but will be in the future); so it will be RP that differentiates drivers eventually.

It’s not “perfect” but I think it works for us.

Both signups above are accepted, but I would like to point out for future signups, if we can get those lap record times down.
An average lap time on a typical NASCAR cookie cutter track is between 45 and 50 seconds; around 30 seconds on a mile oval, and 15-20 second on a short track.

1) Yes, #01, #02, etc, are treated as different numbers then #1, and #2, and are eligible numbers.
2) I give free reign to the RPer over this. Ideally, it should be a manufacturer in your nation, or from someone else's nation. Seems like it would be a good opportunity for a storefront if say one of your manufacturers wanted to produce vehicles for other race teams. One thing I am not looking for here those (though someone is allowed to do it, is to use the RL manufactuerers).

I have some questions about this. Will every race be limited to 40 cars? That will make it more realistic. And will there be a "Chase" (playoffs)?

Good questions. I'll be looking for a field size somewhere within a range of the mid-30's and no more then 44. (44 as opposed to 43, since its an easier number to work with). Right now we are sitting right on 44 with accepting all four drivers from each nation, but if a couple more nations signed up, then cutting everyone to three drivers should get us within the desired range. Since NASCAR regularly had 43-car field sizes, I'm fine with the 43 (or 44) car field size.

As for the Chase, as much as I would like to be "old school", its a part of the sport now. This will be the first time I implement a Chase in NSSCRA, and want to see how the final signup numbers look before setting up the Chase, where the elimination cutoffs will be, and how many drivers move on, etc etc.

On this note, I will formally close signups at 8pm EST on Monday, Feb. 19. This is when I will create the everything thread.
Participants should be prepared for the race to be on Thursday, Feb. 22.

I was feeling quite under the weather yesterday (somewhat better today), and didn't "bump" this in a timely manner to note that the signup cutoff was imminent. So I am going to keep them open until 8pm EST today (Tuesday Feb 20).

First race will now be Friday. More details provided when the everything thread is created tonight.

Might I suggest a little bit more of a delay before the first race?

I would give at least a week from the close of signups to the start so maybe starting next weekend would make more sense. No one has had a chance to RP yet and you are already thinking about the first cutoff :)

Unless its just a test event like winter testing before the season starts, that would be ok since it would aide RP

I would give at least a week from the close of signups to the start so maybe starting next weekend would make more sense. No one has had a chance to RP yet and you are already thinking about the first cutoff :)

I think he just means he's closing sign-ups tonight, not a cutoff to scorinate something. Then you would have the next few days between today and Friday to post your first RPs.

I think that's a great idea actually, about the test event. We'll do that Friday, and begin on Sunday (cutoff times will be in the evening hours)

I won't be able to post on Friday or until rather late Saturday. I have a friend's wife's birthday Friday and will be at my girlfriend's house most of Saturday, and won't have access to a proper computer.
Jebslund is a nation of kerbals ruled by Emperor Jebediah Kerman. We reject tyranny, believing that rights should be protected, though we also believe said rights end where the rights of others begin.
Shockingly, we *do* use NS stats, with the exception of lifespan.
Singular sapient: Jebslunder
Plural Sapient: Jebslunden
Singular/Plural nonsapient: Kermanic
Note: When a verb can logically only be done by the sapient using/piloting/holding the object in question, then the appropriate demonym for the number of sapients is used.

I have more questions. How do we determine the starting positions for each race? Is that in the scorinator? It will be useful to know (in RP) who starts on pole, rear, etc. And how about crashes, mechanical failures etc? How do we RP that?
