[SUBMITTED] State Of The Media

Postby Singapore no2 » Mon Jan 29, 2018 3:37 am

[desc] According to recent surveys conducted by the National Broadcasting Agency (NBA), viewership of state media has hit a record low, resulting in a wave of officials and NBA staff seeking your advice on how to improve the situation.

[validity] Only valid for nations with state media

[option] "We could accommodate more alternative views," proposes @@RANDOMNAME@@, a talk show host, speaking with you on live television. "@@DEMONYMPLURAL@@ tend to view our state-approved programmes as blatant government propaganda. If we were to spice up our newspaper opinion columns and interviews with a greater variety of voices, then even the staunchest critics of state media won't be able say that we're biased any longer."
[effect] extremists and separatists are regularly invited to broadcast their divisive messages on national television

[option] "I think that it's a matter of trust," concedes the Head of the Department of Truth, while idly fudging a bunch of official figures. "We shouldn't cushion our people from the harsh truths of our nation, if that's what they truly want. Unlike what the national papers say, we don't actually have full employment or zero crime. We must release every single statistic being tracked in our country, and hope that our citizens can believe in us then."
[effect] the evening news completely consists of a reporter robotically reading off a lengthy spreadsheet

[option] "The only true solution is to force everyone to watch our shows," whispers the Minister of Internal Security, handing you a prototype screen. "We should install these modified televisions in every single household. They have built-in microphones and security cameras so that we can keep our citizens under constant surveillance. People who attempt to ignore state media by switching off their televisions will be identified, and taken away for a bit of re-education on how to be a proper citizen."
[effect] couch potatoes are considered to be model citizens

[option] "That would be a hideous waste of our limited resources!" objects the State Treasurer, throwing open your office doors. "If no one wants to view official media, then they don't have to. We should scrap the entire thing and let the public come up with their own sources of information and entertainment. The money we would save could be spent somewhere else, like on strengthening our military and funding law enforcement."
[effect] tabloids and sensationalist news are making a comeback following the fall of state media

If they're the NBA, they should play basketball as well as tell you the news.

Maybe you could do "State of the Media" for the title?

That would probably detract from the issue.

But newspapers still exist, and they are merely part of state media.

With citizens growing increasingly estranged from the official narrative, worried officials and NBA employees are putting forth suggestions to improve public interest and save the failing industry.

Second half redundant, in my opinion.

Well in the case of Australia, our state media has low viewership, but it's state media in funding only, it is completely independent and has been and constantly criticises right wing governments. Its viewership is low because people are sick of the bias (it's been said that the ABC is so far on the left, it makes the BBC look like Fox News)

Option five could have funding diverted to the two least-funded sectors of the player’s nation, if that is technically possible.

No. Anything is possible, of course, but given the workload of new coding and general job backlog of that team, don't expect them to implement it for this.

I'd say you've got one option too many. No specific option in mind, just looking at the overall issue shape.

I would think Option 3

Unless I say they do, in which case, there is a nonzero chance.

Eh, your call. Right now it's an issue that is good enough to sit in the accepted pool, but it doesn't shine so much that I'd want to pick it up, and it may eventually drop off the bottom. Mediocre would be unfair, as it is clearly good quality. Mid-range would probably be more accurate.
