The Lanthe Route is a network of artificial and natural wormholes reaching from interstellar space near Kepler-296 to Vessader along the trailing edge of the Carina-Sagittarius Arm. The Lanthe is one of the most developed interstellar trade routes in the Milky Way Galaxy and among the oldest. It remains the most reliable method of navigating almost the entirety of the Gamma Quadrant from the Solarian Reaches and connects or passes near many quadrant hubs (including the Free Star Republic, Liu Xiu Special Economic Zone, the Uthani Imperium’s space, and the Solarian Trade Corridor). Patrolled by the Kriegsmarine and other Valinor security forces, the Lanthe remains a beacon of stability across the chaotic volumes.

Attention vessel, this is Lanthine Transit Control. Submit registration credentials, navigation request, and manifest. You will receive further instruction momentarily. Welcome to the Route.

Information received and receipted. Stand by for data packet.

What is the Lanthe Route?
The Lanthe Route is a network of artificial and natural wormholes connecting numerous systems and interstellar locations throughout the Alpha and Gamma quadrants. The Lanthe started as a long series of jumps around the galactic core charted to connect Valinon with the Orion Star Empire of Steel Butterfly and the Orion Sector. The economic and strategic value of the route led to the construction of a network of naval stations and listening posts along the route. Development of the Lanthe continued as the Valinor empire expanded in the Raumreich Oversector and Solarian Reaches. Even as Steel Butterfly ceased to be a major strategic partner, Valinon continued to expand the Lanthe and improve upon the original natural route especially through communication and transportation infrastructure. This led to the Lanthe being the first major deployment of quantum entanglement gates (QE-gates) outside the Solarian Reaches and transitioning the Route into its modern form.

The Lanthe Route is designated as a logistical network and infrastructure complex by the Office for Imperial Projects and Systems Development (OIPSD). It is jointly administered by the Imperial Armed Forces (IAF) and the Imperial Wormhole Control Service (IWCS). Since the Fifth Lanthine Transportation Act, transit duties and fees were abolished throughout the Route. The current Lanthine Formation consists of 13 wormhole junctions, 43 QE-gates, and scores of facilities ranging from traffic control centres, ansible platforms, warehouses, shipping centres, etc. The detritus of Valinon, its fellow Raumreich states, and a host of other nations collects in varying light centuries of depth along the Route and constitutes the Lee of the Lanthe or the Lanthine Lee—an unwieldy sea of client states, colonies, dependencies, minor states, and various free ports nominally enjoying imperial protection. Or at least imperial indifference.

Other routes and gate networks rise and fall. Even the terminals of the Lanthe have shifted. The Lee ebbs and expands, but the Route is eternal.

Who owns the Lanthe Route?
The Lanthe Route proper is part of the Demesne, or imperial territory proper. It is subject to imperial law and is legally indistinct from any of the empire’s constituent dominions. The civilian governance of the Lanthe is the responsibility of the IWCS, a uniformed service of the Ministry for Home Affairs. The defence and security of the Lanthe is the responsibility of the IAF, specifically the Kriegsmarine (KM) with the Office of Verge Affairs (OVA), the Reichswehr (RW), and the Imperial Border Agency (IBA) as coordinating partners. Like the imperial home systems, the Valinor government operates with a light touch. The empire is liberalised in its civil and economic rights, but it deals harshly with those that do manage to find themselves outside the boundaries of imperial law.

It is designated as a logistical network and infrastructure complex by the Office for Imperial Projects and Systems Development (OIPSD). It is jointly administered by IAF and the IWCS.

The spatial volumes and systems constituting the Lanthine Lee are more diverse in character. Some of these Dependent Areas or Crown Dependencies under imperial authority, but others are sovereign territory of another state. While much of the Lee is subject to regular patrols by a mixture of Kriegsmarine, OVA, and even other Raumreich navies operating as part of League of the Raumreich anti-piracy and commerce protection efforts, the patrols do not necessarily coincide with either the protection or restriction of imperial law.

I wish to get involved with the Lanthe Route, how do I do that?
The Lanthe Route and the Lee is largely open to any and all galactic nations that wish to take part and use it as a setting for roleplaying or nation-building. To this end, Valinon and the Raumreich Oversector support and operate this thread and a codex of locations (locations established by the Raumreich community and other nations). Please see the following post for the relevant forms and for a full listing of locations, et cetera, included in the Lee of the Lanthe.

What is the Lanthe Route?
The Lanthe Route is an open Future Tech setting. It is not represented by a single roleplaying thread, a closed group, or otherwise removed from the greater Future Tech (FT) community. Players are free to use any part of the Lanthe as a launch point or a central setting for any FT-related RP so long as it does not conflict with the Lanthe’s rules or any temporary restrictions/stipulations. This means if you want to use the Lanthe as a starting point for a diplomatic RP, a crime thread, or a meeting place of intergalactic ne'er-do-wells enjoying a space yachting to the nearest tank polo match you may do so. However, it is appropriate to contact either Valinon or other relevant owners if a thread or idea would result in a major--or minor--change to their contribution to the overall Lanthine setting.

The Lanthe is also a cooperative project and is intended to work in collaboration with the Liu Xiu Special Economic Zone, the Compendium, the State of the Galaxy thread, and other FT open settings and projects. It is a network that allows various FT nations to mingle and trade without some of the hazards presently facing the galactic community.

This does mean that the Lanthe (like Liu Xiu) functions as a sandbox, but it is a slightly more limited sandbox in terms of governance and certain structural limitations. Details on these limitations are provided throughout the opening post (OP).

Who owns the Lanthe Route?
Valinon as the owner and operator of this thread. I reserve the right to restrict or remove players that do not abide by the OOC and IC rules of this thread, NationStates, et cetera; this includes a reservation of my right to remove any player or their involvement for any reason (including ‘none’), as is standard for NationState’s roleplaying. I am ably assisted by my fellow members of the Raumreich Oversector, who will be periodic contributors and control various holdings in the Lee of the Lanthe. Vernii and New Ortaga may be used as secondary points of contact if I am unavailable. I can also be found on the NS Future Tech (NSFT) Discord Server.

I wish to get involved with the Lanthe Route, how do I do that?
The Lanthe Route is open to nearly all roleplayers within the FT community as it is an open setting. Additional posts will include more information about how to apply for an Outpost within the Lanthe Route proper or to be affiliated with the Lanthine Lee. Please note the difference between the two and that the Lanthe does not allow for Enclaves as permitted in the Liu Xiu Special Economic Zone.

Outposts and other locations associated with the Lanthe will be codified in this thread. Core settings (those created by Raumreich Oversector states or others enjoying Lanthine rights) will be included in the relevant Google Drive files used to support this project.

    Note: Contents of document are under perpetual, active development and may change without notification. [23.01.2018].

Lanthine Anchorages & Security Centres

Laws & Regulations of the Lanthe

I. All nations, corporations, organisations, and individuals using the Lanthe Route and/or operating facilities (Outposts) along the Route are subject to the laws of the United Star Empire of Valinon while using the Route or navigating its organised dependent territories. Extraterritoriality is not recognised within the Bounds of the Lanthe, excluding diplomatic envoys, missions, and ships accredited by the empire and protected by customary international law.

II. The United Star Empire permits the transit of military vessels along the Route under escort and with sealed weapons (as defined by the Imperial Wormhole Control Service, its agents, and imperial maritime law). The number of ships permitted is subject to the approval of the Admiralty and the IWCS. The empire reserves the right to rescind any or all military access and to enforce the removal of unwanted warships by any and all means necessary.

III. All superluminal and subluminal traffic (regardless of point-of-origin, port-of-deposit, or flag state) will adhere to the IWCS Transit Regulations and imperial maritime law while navigating the Lanthe Route.

IV. All nations, corporations, and organisations will cease outside hostilities upon entering the Bounds of the Lanthe. Violation of this provision will result in immediate expulsion or destruction of the offending parties and the revocation of all access to the Route.

V. Imperial law defines any and all attack upon the Lanthe Route, its Bounds, its infrastructures, and/or its protectors as an attack upon the sovereign territory of the Demesne. The United Star Empire of Valinon will respond to such action accordingly, up to and including a formal declaration of war upon those that attack its citizens, infrastructure, and property.

VI. In accordance with the Second Lanthine Transportation Act, Her Imperial Majesty and Her Majesty’s Government reserve the right to award additional privileges, rights, and duties onto those nations, organisations, and individuals deemed worthy and granted such extraordinary charter through the due process of imperial law (see Lanthine Rights).

VII. In accordance with the Third Lanthine Transportation Act, the Admiralty Courts of Her Imperial Majesty’s Kriegsmarine enjoy original jurisdiction in respects to civil and criminal matters pertaining to the Bounds of the Lanthe as a court of decreed jurisdiction. This original jurisdiction is held concurrently with the College of the Consuls (the imperial supreme court) and the Admiralty Courts may organise local courts and defer jurisdiction to them as the Courts see fit and in accordance with imperial law. In practice, the Admiralty Courts are the Lanthine arbiters of maritime contracts, injuries, offenses, and torts.

Imperial Wormhole Control Service Transit Regulations

I. All vessel operators and/or captains, regardless of point-of-origin, port-of-deposit, or flag state, are required to to acknowledge that the United Star Empire of Valinon, the Lanthine Transit Control (LTC), and by extension all associated agencies and contractors are not liable for loss of life or destruction or loss of property in the event that vessels violates the laws and regulation of the Lanthe, disobeys the instructions of the LTC, and/or navigates outside the Route operational areas.

II. All vessels are required to comply with navigation instructions issued by the LTC and its cooperating authorities. This includes system-specific limitations on superluminal travel and restrictions to access due to active security operations.

III. All vessels must provide current registration information that includes point-of-origin, last port-of-deposit, flag state, identification codes, registration information, complete manifest (including cargo, crew, and passengers). Registration data packets are to be transmitted to LTC authorities. Packets will be verified before vessels are cleared to navigate the Route. Registration information may be challenged and required verification by onboard inspection. Failure to comply with these requirements will result in an vessel being impounded.

IV. All vessels possessing neither previous LTC clearance records nor trade lane and/or customs inspection certification from at minimum two Route, other Valinor, other League of the Raumreich member, or diplomatically recognised state are required to verify licensed helm and pilotage registration in accordance with imperial law. Any vessels that fails to submit to verification and investigation and navigates within three Astronomical Units (AUs) of any major planetary body, stellar body, or artificial infrastructure in the Route operational zone will be tagged as hostile and immediately engaged by LTC security forces.

V. All vessels found to be in violation of the laws and regulations of the Lanth, the Lanthine Transit Control Codes, international treatise, or imperial law will be stopped and detained by any means necessary. In accordance with imperial maritime law, vessels may be held for a period of a standard month without justification or initiation of legal process. Vessels found to harbour contraband in violation of the law shall consider their cargo forfeit, and may have their vessels seized. Personnel of vessels found to be violating the law may expect to be detained and subject to criminal charges.

Imperial Charter of Rights to the Lanthe

The Lanthine Rights are an imperial charter awarded to a nation, corporation, or organisation by the Congress of Lords with imperial assent to the law. This is a civic charter that is an intermediate legal status between Route access rights enjoyed by Valinor citizens, corporations, and organisations and limitations of foreign citizens, corporations, and organisations. The most important Lanthine Rights are

  • the right to limited extraterritoriality within the Bounds of the Lanthe;
  • the right to preferred transit after Valinor flagged vessels;
  • and additional rights to use the Lanthe for military and security operations.
Prior to the Fifth Lanthine Transportation Act, holders of these charters were granted a 60 percent reduction of all transit and usage fees along the Route. The abolition of these fees rendered this point of the charter moot, though it technically remains part of those charters so far granted.

The current holders of Lanthine Rights are the

  • Commonwealth of Berchest;
  • Collective Protectorates of True Hope;
  • Democratic Imperium of Mangala;
  • Federated Suns of New Ortaga;
  • Royaume de Nouveau Caledonia;
  • Republic of Sunset;
  • Empire of Tarasovka;
  • Greater Empire of Vakutu;
  • and Imperium of Vernii.

Important Out of Character (OOC) Information

The Lanthe Route and its Lee are open settings. This means that the rules of NationStates site administration, forums, and the outside OOC rules outlined in this thread are the only limitations on the roleplaying potential of the setting. Much of the Route and the Lee are open to any Future Tech players that may be interested, may be used as an RP setting, or may be used as a reference in other threads. It is encouraged that players check with the owner of any Outpost or Lee location if they intend on RPing in that location. Potential major changes (such as invasions and open military conflicts) DO need to be cleared by me first. Please note that OOC clearance does not mean you are waived from possible IC responses by either Valinon or the Raumreich Oversector community (RR).

What does Open setting mean? Like the Liu Xiu project, it means that content and stories are primarily up to the creation of individual players or groups. There will be periodic content produced by myself, other RR members, and some other allies/friends/drunken bar associates. These content updates may add locations, remove locations, change the character of the Lanthe, or do almost nothing at all. The Lanthe is a communications and transportation network, which means it can be the setting for an entire RP or serve as a way for moving a thread from one side of the galaxy to the other. The Lanthe can (and most likely will) be affected by the events in the greater FT community and actions along the Route or in the Lee may provoke a reaction in the FT community-at-large. It is not designed to compete with other open story settings in the FT community.

I have spent some time comparing the Route and the Lee to Liu Xiu, but I do want to note there are differences between the two open settings. Ultimately, the Lanthe Route is more controlled than the Liu Xiu Special Economic Zone. The United Star Empire of Valinon considers the Route part of its integral territory. This means it is defended by the Imperial Armed Forces, policed by its security services (in a very broad sense of all elements of that phrase), and subject to its laws. Valinon and the Raumreich community take a dim view of both piracy and slavery. This does not mean that such activities do not take place along the Route or in the Lee, but they are a risk when compared to other areas of the galaxy. However, OOC accommodations may be made for the sake of a story, et cetera. Extraterritoriality (excluding customary rights for embassies, consulates, and/or trade legations) is not allowed along the Lanthe proper. Nations and/or corporations may hold Outposts and other commercial infrastructure along the Route, but it is subject to Valinor law. The same cannot be said of the Lee, which is a mixture of sovereign entities, stellar systems, and interstellar curiosities.

The political character of this setting also means there can be a discrepancy between the IC and OOC governance of the Lanthe and the Lee (the latter to a lesser extent). While Valinon increasingly liberalised the Route, it ultimately retains the legal authority to restrict or ban a nation/nations from the Route. This most commonly results in the limitation of a nation’s, an organisation’s, or an alliance’s ability to use the Route for military transit, but it can also be applied to all civilian vessels flagged by a specific nation. However, this does not coincide with an OOC ban or a stripping of a player’s rights to use the Lanthe setting. IC conflict is transient; the ability to improve the FT community with a good story (even if it challenges the IC status quo) is not. In practice, this means a nation’s Outpost and other facilities may be flagged as impounded/suspended. This is an IC designation only unless otherwise noted.

I welcome all FT players that wish to use the Route and the Lee in conjunction with other open settings. It is more than part of the reason I am attempting to provide a suitable archive and index for the Lanthe Route with some encouragement by other members of the FT community. I will endorse and steal Vocenae’s suggestion that individual stories (short stories or other pieces not part of a RP thread) involving the Lanthe be included in The Compendium. This will improve the quality of the Lanthe and the FT community’s setting as a whole.

The Lanthe Route is an IC element for Valinon and the RR community. It is a common location for warships of many nations and provides commerce protection and emergency assistance. However, Valinon does not accept responsibility for all locations within the Lee. These are merely in the general commercial/economic sphere of influence around the Lanthe and may or may not enjoy an official relationship with Valinon. Valinon’s primary responsibility is to protect the Lanthe and preserve its interest. And, as many in the FT community can tell you, it is dubious to rely on Valinor good will as a means of survival.

Welcome to the Route!
Valinon
