Yoshiro Namaka
Wonder Island, San Diego

The pounding in her skull was relentless. Yoshiro scrunched her eyes up, trying to ignore the throbbing headache that greeted her when she awoke. The headache was nauseating, and Yoshiro wanted nothing more than to make it go away so that she could go fall back into a blissful sleep. Steadily, she became aware of physical pains as well as the throbbing between her ears. Her limbs were limp with fatigue, the unmistakable complaints of cuts and bruises emanating from all over her body.

Pursing her lips in irritation, Yoshiro cursed the distraction from her rest. She tried to force her mind out of its groggy state. She’d been at a party. Yes, they’d been celebrating the end of the year at Wonder Island when there’d been an earthquake. Except it hadn't been an earthquake, had it? Her fuzzy memories began to return to her, images of orange jumpsuits and the pounding adrenalin as the prisoner had attacked her. Nightshade had saved her, but then she’d seen that other boy falling. There hadn’t been any time to think, she’d just acted on impulse.

Yoshiro grimaced, that explained the killer headache that she now had to deal with.

Shifting slightly, Yoshiro heard a flash of emotion through the foggy ache in her mind. Curious, she reached out towards the warm sensation. It was a comforting presence, although she couldn’t quite bring it into focus. With a degree of effort, the girl forced her eyelids to open and reveal the world around her. Instead of the roof of her bedroom, Yoshiro found herself greeted instead by the face of a boy about her age.

Narrowing her eyes in confusion, it began to dawn on Yoshiro that she was being carried rather than lying down. She blushed as she suddenly realised who exactly was the one doing the carrying. Wasn’t that Austin Flanagan? Wasn’t he one of the bad-boy types from school? Yoshiro didn’t think that she’d ever had any classes with him, but she’d seen him around and Sarah had crushed on him for a term. Yoshiro’s eyes widened with a jolt as she saw that Austin was wearing the Mask’s uniform, the remainder of her memory immediately jogging itself. He turned down to look at her, smiling as he realised that she was awake.

That was when Naja opened her mouth to address the group, but instead of words, a shrill wail burst out from her throat

Awaking with a start, Yoshiro’s eyes shot open to reveal her bedroom. The dream almost immediately faded into a half-memory, the merciless ringing of the alarm pushing aside the last vestiges of sleep. Haphazardly waving her arm across her bedside table, Yoshiro eventually felt the unmistakable shape of her alarm clock and slammed the snooze button with the full weight of her annoyance at the hateful device.

Sighing in relief at the resulting sweet silence, Yoshiro glanced lay motionless for a few more moments as reality once again took hold of her conscious thoughts. It had been two weeks since the party. Two weeks since the breakout that even now dominated the news cycle across the country, and undoubtedly two weeks of the craziest summer Yoshiro had ever had. Thin streams of light shone through the gaps in her curtains, and the girl glanced lazily at her clock’s display.

9:00am.

Still half-groggy from sleep, it took a few moments for Yoshiro to fully grasp the meaning behind the unexpected digits.

“Shit!”

All at once, Yoshiro’s bed erupted into a chaotic swirl of flailing limbs and bedsheets as she tried to untangle herself from her covers. With a surprised yelp, Yoshiro found herself falling off of the edge of her mattress and onto the floor. Only allowing herself a moment to recover, the girl quickly pulled herself to her feet and made a mad dash towards her cupboard, grabbing the first change of clothes that she could.

Yoshiro offered a wave of thanks to the bus driver as she exited at her stop, cradling a small stack of take-out coffees in her free arm. She was in a rush to get to the team meeting, already being late after sleeping in, but Yoshiro couldn’t help but stop and glance up at the Tower before her. For a moment, her legs kept her in place as she once again felt a sense of awe at her own situation.

Shaking aside the thought, Yoshiro broke into a brisk walk through the hallways – her pace kept just under a jog for fear of spilling all the coffee balanced precariously in her arms. She cursed inwardly, the embarrassment at being late to the meeting already sending a hint of colour to her cheeks. Truthfully, Yoshiro felt like she had been caught up in a whirlwind of a fluke. Over the past two weeks, the gulf between her own abilities and those of her new teammates had become increasingly apparent. The sense of achievement that she’d felt at opening bottles with her powers now felt like little more than a parlour trick. Roy and Red didn’t even have powers and yet were leagues above what she could even imagine herself being capable of. They were all so determined, willing to stand up against the world if it meant making a difference for the better. Smiling sheepishly, Yoshiro was just happy to hang out with the team – even if the best way she could contribute was by bringing them coffee and cheering on from the sidelines.

Walking into the meeting room with an apologetic grin, Yoshiro entered just as Naja asked for everyone’s attention. Trying not to be too distracting, Yoshiro handed out each of the cups of coffee to the usual suspects – having figured out who liked what over the past two weeks. She felt a burst of excitement as the team began discussing possible names; somehow it made everything seem all the more real. Yoshiro liked Mars’ idea, it seemed like it was an apt memorial for the Wonder Warriors and made a powerful statement – but couldn’t think of anything to add herself. She glanced around at the others, hearing their own feelings and emotions at the discussion but making sure not to pry rudely into their opinions. Yoshiro’s gaze met Red’s for a moment, and she offered the boy a friendly smile before looking back to see if Naja had anything else to say.

Team Meeting
Mars was surprised at the back and forth that was happening regarding his suggestion. He was happy to see so many people agreed with him, Kiris, Carter, Casimir, and Wyatt all spoke up to support him. Then Mars heard Wendy's comment, and couldn't help but wonder if she was right. He couldn't deny that despite making progress, there was still so much to do. If they were attacked, would they just be massacred all over again. Mars looked over to Roy, who seemed to be glad that someone was finally agreeing with him. He sipped on the iced coffee Yoshi had brought as waited for someone else to speak.

"Wendy is right." Roy said, addressing the group. "We can't just pick a name because it's meaningful and noble, we have to be smart about this."

Naja meanwhile addressed Wendy's question, "Staying off the radar will be impossible. You all are teenagers and teenage heroes are practically unknown since the Wonder Warriors. If you all are intent on becoming heroes there will no way to keep that a secret. It's that reason that your name is so important, people will scrutinize everything you do, and you won't be popular not at first at least. The only way we'll be able to keep you truly safe, is if you can build up a powerful reputation, and make connections that ensure that when you need help you'll have the support of the public and your fellow heroes". Naja said to Wendy, but was speaking to the group as a whole as well.

Mike Mathews
Wonder Island, meeting room

"Yes! I think that we could totally try that! I've been able to absorb kinetic energy before, although I'm not sure exactly of the specifications. I'd have to be very close in order to get the kinetic energy of the object before it explodes, although that might injure me. The flames would actually help me, give me a little boost... Oh, yeah. Right. I thought your power was just like hardening stuff. But, yeah. We should totally try playing with some explosions later!"

After mentioning his idea, Mike was ecstatic to see Nathan’s enthusiasm as he instantly took to it and went on to begin running the specifics through his mind. Before Mike could respond and give the details of his own power, an all too familiar voice crossed the room.

"I'd suggest staying away from explosions. They tend to sting a bit,"

At which point Nathan turned to face Red before seemingly biting back some words and slumping into his chair. Mike on the other hand, had a bad habit of speaking his mind but, as luck would have it, was cut off before he had the chance to give any sort half decent retort about explosives and blast zones.

Naja’s choice of topic caught Mike a little unprepared. What surprised him even more was Mars’ suggestion. While Naja, Roy and now Wendy all made good points, Mike couldn’t help but find himself lightly chewing the inside of his mouth from agitation.

When one of the girls called out “Who cares?” Mike found himself taken aback at first. So much so that it wasn’t until she continued did Mike even realise that the outcry belonged to Frostbite “Don't pick a name because it's popular or cool, do it because it means something."

For a moment there was silence before one by one people started to say their thoughts. While some looked to be against the name, it looked like the majority liked it. Personally, Mike didn’t know what he thought but had the words 'because it means something' stuck in his mind. As things were, he knew that he didn’t like the way society had superheroes placed atop giant pedestals. And while he wasn’t happy about a mysterious benefactor, he still preferred it to sponsorships. To him, the ideas of fame and fortune weren’t meant to be a cornerstone of what should’ve just been helping people. Young Bloods were a name that showed loss and sadness but also sacrifice. Some might see it as a desperate grab at attention while others might see it as a respectful nod to the attempts of others. It wasn’t until Naja finished addressing them about getting recognition did Mike begin to fully realise what he felt.

“We’re not here to be popular” He said as he made up his mind. “We’re here to help those who need our help.” Then pausing for a moment, he looked around to try and read the room. He still didn’t know everyone all that well, but those that fought two weeks ago all could’ve chosen to run, instead, each had stayed to fight and help. For that, he hoped most would agree on some level at least. “So, as much as I wanted to vote for the 'San Diego whatevers', I’m voting for Young Bloods. It has meaning and heart.” Then without even thinking about it, he found himself looking in Roy’s direction as he continued “Which is exactly what a team name should be about.” Maybe it was him being childish or idealistic, but Mike wanted to act the way he thought was best and he wasn't planning on giving ground at the very first hurdle.

Suddenly in walked Cassandra, the now resident Team robot butler, with several plates of snacks. She seemed to be balancing them very well with few wobblings of the plates. She brought them to the center of the room, placing them on a convinient table before she went to get more, performing the same routine as she put the plates onto the table. She had to make sure there was enough snacks for everyone, though she hope she didn't underestimate or overestimate their appetites. With no data, she had to go with the average human weight and callorie intake of a "snack" for each person, which was a flawed measurement.

"I have prepared snacks for all of you." She announced to everyone, her face impassive and her voice neutral. She was wearing her typical butler uniform. "If more are required, or if you wish specific refreshments, then do not hesitate to inform me." She paused, then added. "Please, enjoy these food items."

Nama started the meeting once most people had come. Maybe she assumed others could tell the rest about the meeting, or maybe she just strict. Anyway, she begun by telling us of our "benefactor", which for some reasons is staying anonymous. I was a little bit concerned, but the way Naja put it it seemed that it was the usual deal with superhero teams. Come to think about it, I don't think my father also know very well how the Brotherhood sustains themselves. I made a mental note to investigate these, "benefactors" when I have the time.

Naja then continued to talk about our team's name. She gave us a brief lecture on PR explaining why we need a name and my own mind ran wild with ideas. I was going to submit San Diego Paragons when Mars came up with using Young Bloods for our name. Quite expectedly, Naja and Roy opposed it instantly, while most of the other guys seemed to agree with Mars. I was quite torn. On one side, Mars was right in that the Wonder Warriors ideals would be passed on by using the name. On the other hand, some people might see us as a disgrace to the name. A vandal desecrating the memory of those who died that night. It was indeed, a massacre. What would the family think, if we pick up the name? As Naja said, it was a risqué move.

Wendy put on a nice point about we should go under the radar for now, but with the media keep broadcasting the incident two weeks ago, and I don't see that they would stop beating it anytime soon, there wasn't much room for us to go off radar. Wyatt was also right that using the name would be as good as putting a paper on our backs saying "Kick me please!". There were other things that troubled me more if we indeed use the name...

Naja cleared the fact that, yes, we would not be able to go underground. She said we need to make people trust us and build our reputation. Using Young Bloods as a name would be a gamble that is greater than what we might think. How long had it been since the Massacre? Fifteen years? Nineteen? How much of it the public still remembers? If we use it, would anyone equate us to choose Jonestown Angels as a name? Everyone looked enthusiastic to wear the mantle though, and frankly Young Bloods is way cooler than San Diego Paragons or something like that.

"I agree that our name needs to have a meaning," I spoke up to the group. "And I agree that we should be careful to pick our names. Frankly I would go with anything that doesn't sounds silly like, I don't know, Rainbow Fighters or something like that. Names have power, probably in ways beyond our understanding, but I know for sure that any power the name Young Bloods has, it comes from the love of Wonder Warriors' families and friends, their faith in their beliefs, and the hope they were representing. It is a sanctified name, forever etched in the hearts of the people. I think I understand what you are feeling Mars, why you want to use it as our name. But if we are to choose that name, that means it will become our burden to served the ideals of Wonder Warriors. That we could make a change for the better. That we could brighten up at least a corner of this world. If we are bold enough to named ourselves Young Bloods, we should also be brave enough to face whatever danger that is coming towards us, and more importantly we should also protect others from danger. I believe we can do that. I can see it in your eyes, your Faith that good can and will surpass evil, your Love for your city and compassion to others. Call me naive, but I bet my life that we could be a beacon of Hope for the people. Not just to those who need our helps, but also to those that have forsake this world for it's flaws, those that have damned the goals of Wonder and any other heroes on this planet.

"Using the name would be risky, yes, but isn't that what being a hero is all about? To take the risky chance that other would have passed? To risk our life for a thousand other life? If we're going to use the name, we need to prove that we deserve that name. We have to prove our worth and maintain the pride and Honour of the name. There were a lot of bloods spilled that day. The bloods of young and chivalrous man. If we're going to use the name, we'll be inheriting the legacy of Wonder Warriors. It will be our duty to make the proud. I'm all in. Let the villains come at us right now. This time, it will be their blood that is spilled."

I didn't know when, but I had stood up during my rant while looking at Mars, Naja, and other members of our little club. I must have looked like a lousy preacher, since some of them looked at me curiously. I slowly returned to my seat, trying my best to ignore that I had just ranted in front of everyone. Whatever our name would be in the end, we will have to fight for its honour. I gazed at everyone, trying to see what were they thinking.

On Wonder Island

Nathan contemplated the conversation earnestly, hearing his teammates argue. He wondered how successful they could possibly be in the future if they couldn’t even agree on a name. He knew both sides of the argument were correct; although naming themselves after a massacre hat occurred on the same grounds they were standing in would send a giant “Fuck you!” to the villains, but maybe that’s what they wanted to do. Maybe they needed to turn this symbol of failure to one of hope.

He smiled as Yoshi entered, clearly apologizing for being late by offering coffee to everyone. He graciously took one from her, smiling politely, when Cassandra too walked in with various food items. Staying true to her butler outfit, which Nathan still found hilarious, she often cared for them. He wasn’t exactly sure what was up with her, but her quirks always made him smile.

He considered throwing his two cents in, letting them know what he thought, but didn’t want to alienate any of his teammates, although he had to hold back a laugh at Mike’s pointed looks at Roy. Instead, he tried to imagine the possible effects of them actually playing with explosions. He didn’t really care about a name, so he figured he’d let them hash out the details without him.

[hr]In Downtown San Diego

Violet sat in class, trying to focus on finishing her final but failing miserably. It wasn’t that she was bad at the subject; chemistry was one of her favorites. But she had felt her bag vibrate a little bit ago, the special kind of vibrate that meant there was trouble. Her brother had set up some sort of program to connect a police scanner to her phone, so she’d know when something was happening. And something was happening.

Flipping to the last page, she read over the problem quickly before realizing she’d never be able to figure it out, even if she had her full attention on it. Half relieved and half anxious, she quickly flipped to the front page of the packet and turned it in, rushing out of the room to check her phone. It booted up maddeningly slow, the loading bar inching forward by millimeters. Finally, the brightly lit screen blinded her, the notification all caps.

“POSSIBLE DRUG TRAFFICKING DOWN AT THE DOCKS—PLEASE RESPOND.”

She read it over and over, growing more disappointed each time. She mostly dealt with small-time criminals and weak super villains; taking down a drug ring would be a first. Still, she had just failed her chem final for it, so she might as well try to get some satisfaction out of the night.

Thinking it over, she changed into her regular super outfit and started for the docks.

[hr]On Tolaer

Yierneg simply blinked at the voice, half-hoping the salty breeze would fade back into desert again, the salty breeze replaced by arid sand. Instead, he was simply disappointed. Remembering himself, he held his head high and masked his face with calm.

“Who are you?” he started, silently unfolding his wings in case he needed to leave quickly.

The man in front of him smiled in response. “Right, sorry, I have a lot of explaining to do. You, my good sir, are in the magical world of Tolaer!”

At the word “magic”, Yierneg stiffened, thinking that it was probably a trap set by his brothers’ mages. He took in his surroundings slowly, turning his head slightly. He was in a courtyard of some sort, people walking all about. The cafe from before was to his left, the patrons still chattering as usual, the woman who waved before smiling as he caught her eye before returning to her conversation. He turned around to see the only outlier to the normal appearance of the place: an old shack, the wooden door closed. Off in the distance he could see tall trees partially blocking the sunlight.

“Yes, this is a university of sorts. All who are here study magic and other dimensions, compiling vast expanses of knowledge in our library. This is also kind of a refugee center, for magical creatures fleeing their home dimension. You, Yierneg, are our first Earth visitor in a very long time.”

Yieneg made no attempt to respond, still trying to take in the man’s words. He happily continued, walking towards the shack and then around it. The Loshiak followed.

“This world is a secret, known by few outside of it. We like to keep it that way. It prevents all sorts of nasty encounters that are bound to happen. It’s almost impossible to get here as well.”

He snorted at that, raising his eyebrows. “I found my way here without even trying.”

“First, you were summoned. I was just getting to that part. Second, I’d change my tone if I were you. Arrogance is not wanted here.”

Yierneg just held his head higher, which the man ignored.

“I was the one that connected your mind to...Jith, was it? I led you here. I planted the transportation stone. You see, the large uprise in magical energy in Thol’s dimension set off quite a number of alarms. Your brothers are doing a lot to find you. And I...I saved you.”

The two had gotten around the shack, and were standing at the edge of a cliff, the ocean pounding against the rocks below. He counted a number of strange creatures swimming below, not even resembling any Earth fish he knew of.

“We are not a fighting society, Yierneg. We don’t intervene in other’s matters. But you, the prince of the Loshiak, have quite a lot of magical potential. And I wanted...no, needed to make sure you fulfilled it. It’s quite sad when such potential remains unused. Besides, that dimension is delicate, based on a certain balance. Your brothers mages’ are on one side of it, drawing quite a bit of energy. You need to as well, or the dimension will collapse.”

Yierneg listened earnestly, nodding his head every once and a while to show he was listening. Much of the magical information was new to him; he hadn’t exactly had the opportunity to learn much before the civil war had started. Still, he was suspicious of the man. He knew too much about Jith and its affairs to be an outsider.

“And why should I trust you?” he asked haughtily, looking done on the man with a blatant accusation in his eyes.

“It’s either us or stay back in Canada, unable to master even a telekinesis spell. Speaking of which, the reason for all your troubles are due to your books. They are specialized spells, for those with a different connection to the dimension than yours. You’ll find the right ones in the library. All you have to do is ask. Nicely,” he said, emphasizing the last word.

With that, the man left abruptly, leaving a shocked Yierneg to contemplate his options.

Carter Graystone

Carter listened intently to the whole discussion, smiling as he watched everyone else slowly start to agree. The Young Bloods was a cool name, because it had a ring to it, and because it meant something greater. That was the point of names. Except for Carter, that name had no meaning. He was guessing his daddy was stoned when dreaming up that name.

He snapped back to attention as that one chick Roy was flirting with came in with a sheepish expression on her mug. She went around and started delivering coffee, putting a latte down in front of Carter. "Huh." he thought "How does she know I like lattes? Whatever.". Just when he was about to continue and put his two cents in when the butler girl came in and started placing snacks down. "Great."he thought. "MORE interruptions. Peachy.". He grabbed a chocolate-chip muffin from the plate and began munching, as he hadn't had any breakfast.

More began to speak up, and a monkey wrench was thrown into the Young Bloods plan, as that weird hacker girl and Roy started becoming all "Oh-no-if-we-choose-this-name-we-gonna-die-oh-no", which was argued by Mike and Amir, with the latter preaching a long-ass sermon. Carter agreed with those too, as he was not gay, and did not want to be called the "Rainbow Warriors", which sounded like a pride group made up of stoned hippies. He stood up from the table, and gave his speal.

"Look, it's not about what's safe or what will make people like us more. No matter what we do, we're getting attention. Flying under the radar is impossible. There's nowhere to hide from all the publicity. So, instead of hiding like cowards, we should call ourselves the Young Bloods to show the whole world that we don't fear the villains and criminals, that we are a symbol of the old to the new, a sign of hope for the people. And...if we can't even face a little negative press, we don't deserve to be a superhero group, we should just resign, close this meeting, and walk back to high school."

Carter's ears burned slightly as he realized how carried away he got. He quickly sat back down...only to miss his chair and hit the floor painfully. By this point, he was burning with shame as he quickly stood up, brushed his pants, and sat down in chair, finally.

After saying her piece, Kirisvala waited and watched as the others spoke. She found herself fairly pleased with the fact that some others agreed with Mars as well, but when it was Wyatt's turned to speak and he explained where the name Young Bloods came from, her enthusiasm waned significantly. She had inferred most of the story that Wyatt told from Mars' words already, but she didn't know that their deaths had been orchestrated with the purpose of sending such a dark message. Wendy's comment further made her feel discouraged, but in the end, her resolve was unshaken. If the Wonder Warriors had truly died for that, then the least they could do was change that, prove that even if the villains' message was right, they would not simply cower. And if they were going to inhabit their former base, then she felt it was their responsibility to redeem their legacy. But it was not her turn to speak, so she simply continued listening.

Her mood improved a little as she noticed, for the first time, the cup of coffee sitting on the table in front of her. Thinking back to previous days, she figured she was too focused to notice Yoshi's hand trying to hand it over and she decided to place it on the table instead. The alien girl carefully took the cup into her claw and sipped her coffee, the heat not bothering her and the copious amounts of sugar making it enjoyable to drink. When the snacks rolled in courtesy of Cassandra, she smiled further and immediately reached out to begin stuffing her face with them, pausing every now and then to avoid drawing too much attention to herself, though she was still quite an enthusiastic eater.

Then, she heard Roy express his agreement with Wendy. She couldn't deny that he had a point, but it still didn't sit well with her, having to pick another, less meaningful name simply because it would keep them safer. Amir argued similar points as she had, and so, she found herself roused by his speech, exclaiming at the end: "Yeah! Faf's whaf I waf fayin'!"

Clearly she didn't consider that her mouth was full of snacks at the moment. Blushing brightly, she swallowed. "Um, but, with a lot less words I guess..." She said, far more quietly, before backing a little more into her seat as if to conceal herself.

Alexis continued to listen to the discussion about team names, though it had pretty much been turned into a discussion about whether to adopt the name 'Young Bloods' proposed by Mars or not, and why. From what she could see, both sides had compelling arguments to defend their positions, and it was hard to see the group reaching any sort of consensus judging by the current state of the conversation. However, that was exactly what they needed to do, so even as she listened, she was already thinking of arguments she could use to try to sway those who still felt hesitant regarding the name.

By the end, the conversation had gotten pretty tense, though after Mike's poke at her, Amir's sermon, Kiris' funny talk and Carter's blunder, she couldn't help but chuckle. She didn't even know if the mood had lightened up or if she was just that prone to laughing, but either way, after calming down, she decided to speak up.

"Sorry, sorry. It's my turn to say something now, right? I'll try to keep it brief, don't want to convert you guys or anything." She said, casting a playful grin in Amir's direction. "I'm gonna focus on a few things here. Wendy, Roy and Naja, you're all worried about the bad press this might generate, but I don't think that's quite as dire. We might get crucified, yes, but that's only if we screw up. And if we're walking into this with a defeatist thought like that, well, we should just be home enjoying our summer vacations instead, right?" At this point, she stopped to look at every other member of the team in the eye before continuing. "But we wanted to make a difference. Well, we can't make a difference from the shadows like some sort of knockoff Illuminati. We're gonna be out there, under the public eye, punching the lights out of some deranged electrician." She stated, pausing for a moment to take a sip of her mocha.

"Which brings me to my next point. Naja, you claim that we'll only be truly safe if we get on other people's good side. But we'll never be truly safe. This duty we're shouldering is inherently dangerous and there's no telling what's going to happen to us tomorrow, I think that's something worth saying, but I also think that we have all heard and thought about this plenty already. If we're still here, I'd like to think that it's because the risk is something we can accept." She said, suddenly placing down her wrench and grabbing the remote to the meeting room's TV from the table in front of her, pointing it at her electronic gauntlet and then toying with some settings for a bit.

"I guess I haven't really said anything in favor of calling ourselves Young Bloods, but I agree with the name, for all the reasons others have stated already; I figured instead of repeating them, I'd simply try to appease or cancel some of the objections raised. Besides, going back to the bad PR thing, I don't think we have to worry." She grinned. "After all, we'll never fall as low as this guy." She finished, snapping her fingers. At the exact second she did so, the TV turned itself on, displaying a YouTube video that was a montage of memes of Quick Shot getting hit in the head by a frying pan, played to the tune of Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up". She let the refrain play once before snapping her fingers again, turning off the TV, and leaning back on her seat with her hands behind her head, her point made.

Once Alexis was done, Kiris nudged Mars gently. "Um... who was that...?" She asked quietly.

Park In-hyun
Downtown San Diego

"P-Please! The blood!" begged the wounded vampire, a local chief of the street gang. Park had traveled through the streets and rooftops of Downtown San Diego, looking for an answer. The drug's seems to be a lot different than the usual ones she watched on TV. It has the reddish-looking one. She hasn't spot anything weird by it, but it seems that it has something to do with the vampire bust she did earlier. Now however, she found the reason why it has the red-colored looking. She found herself on a rooftop, with a group of Vamp Gang. In truth, Vamp Gang is just another street gang founded by recently-turned vampires, wanting a piece of their own. Masquerading as another slightly normal street gang, they built their troops with this...drug they called as Blood Drug.

It turned those humans into a frenzy state, one that managed to called the attention of San Diego PD. Park managed to get the leader first, though. "This blood drug, what is it!?" she called out. The leader, gravely wounded, was in a hard position as he tried frantically for the blood pack she held out. "Answer, and I might give you this for free," she answered. "Lest you want me to call the Council on this."

"P-Please, not them! Okay, we've got this from a random shipment from some vampire guy, looks old, too. It's like some enhancement drugs, man!" But that is the only information she got. She got no clues from this, and she'd better moved on to find the next clue. What about him, though? She dropped the blood pack to him, anyway, which is when he ate it ravenously.

July 3rd, San Diego

Walking under the cover of the night and patrolling the docks of San Diego was a mysterious figure, better blending in thanks to his all-black attire which was comprised of a plain t-shirt, cargo pants and boots; however, this camouflage was pretty much negated by his long blond hair, tied up in a ponytail, which was a stark contrast with his outfit and the darkness around him and gave away his presence quite easily. His face, and by extension his identity, was partially concealed by a simple facemask and a blindfold with holes cut out for the eyes. It was not much, for certain, but at least it was better than a pair of glasses. It was an outfit he had put together over the past two weeks, after discovering his powers and, more importantly, the rush of adrenaline and the release that he felt whenever he used them to cull the scum of San Diego. After all, he couldn't simply do it in his usual clothes and without covering his face unless he wanted trouble not just for himself, but for his father and his uncle as well.

As the young man moved forward, he began sensing rather peculiar pulses coming from somewhere ahead of him. Pausing his stride, he focused for a moment, closing his eyes and ignoring his other senses, save for that strange new one that he couldn't quite control. Information came to him as if in pulses, and though he couldn't quite make anything of it by itself, it allowed him to visualize the presence of various individuals further ahead. There were quite a few, and though he couldn't see anything from where he stood, he had a hunch that he should check it out. Making up his mind, he continued moving forward, faster this time around, though he also took care to not make too much noise in case those people were closer than he thought.

After several moments, the group that he had perceived earlier finally came into view: several men, fairly well-dressed and incredibly shady-looking, a couple of them bearing suitcases that they were currently in the process of trading, all of this under the light of a lonely streetlamp. It was a by-the-books instance of organized crime dealings, practically copied out of a TV show and pasted in reality, and Icarus scoffed at the artificiality of it all for a moment before stopping, remembering that he might give away his position if he continued. Even if it didn't seem that way, he was in real life: those people had really committed crimes, and he would really be in trouble if they caught him before he was ready. Thus, he decided to lie in wait for now, hiding behind some nearby cover as he pondered his next move and waited for his chance.

And sure enough, his chance eventually came. For a moment, just before the group of gangsters prepared to part ways, they were all turned away from him. Seizing the opportunity, the young man lunged out of cover, a prodigious burst of speed propelling him to the side of the suited man that was at the back of the group. It all happened in a second, and before the man or any of his allies had the opportunity to react, Icarus used a burst of strength to slam his foot onto the side of his mark, striking so hard as to send him into the air and make him fall onto the water below afterwards.

"Going somewhere, bastards?" The young man spoke moments before the splash of water was heard. Immediately, all of the criminals turned around, drawing and training their firearms on the lone figure.

"Who the hell is this?!" Asked the one who appeared to be in the lead, pointing a sleek handgun at Icarus with one hand and holding a suitcase with the other.

"Must be that kid that started showing up on the news... what's his name? Blackout!" Another spoke, causing the first one to become infuriated.

"That so? Well, I don't need an upstart badmouthing me and thinking he can get away with it! Fill him with lead!" The boss shouted, prompting all of the gangsters to begin unloading their firearms. However, the brief time that they had spent talking amongst themselves was enough for Icarus to judge that he was close enough to the streetlight to harness its power quickly. Before the leader of the traffickers had even managed to finish ordering a hail of lead upon him, the young man had already drained the power from the streetlight and erected a barrier with it in front of himself, leaving the docks dark save for the barrier's faint light.

Eventually, they stopped shooting, and he knew what that meant. Before they could reload, he took down the shield and, using another burst of power, rammed his shoulder into the boss, knocking him down before turning his attention to the others, who froze amidst their task of reloading their firearms upon watching their leader go down, giving him enough time to take out yet another gangster with a nose-breaking right hook. In the end, the entire group fell rather quickly to the vigilante's assault.

"Crap..." One of them muttered, gritting his teeth and attempting to endure the pain he felt as he tried to crawl towards his gun, which was just out of reach. Before he had the chance to do so, his head was lifted from the ground by the hair and forcefully slammed back into it, smearing it with blood.

"Alright, alright! I surrender! Just call the cops or whatever it is that you guys do!" The drug dealer pleaded.

"Oh, I don't want to put scum like you in jail. I want to scare you off the streets." The black-clad vigilante stated, before slamming his foe's face into the ground once more for good measure, unaware that his actions were being observed by another gifted individual...

Andrew Marks,
San Diego Park

On a hot sunny day at a wonderful park, a group teens from Saint Martha's Home for Youngsters gathered together for lunch. Their table decorated with balloons. The children chatted amongs each other, excited to fill their stomachs and more play out in the field. Among the teenagers was one young boy in particular, Andrew Marks, with snake-like appearance and white milky eyes. Not to mention the long yellow boa constrictor, Rango, sprawled relaxingly along his shoulders moving his head around in scope like fashion. Still, regardless, Andrew looked just as human as anyone else, as cold-blooded and scally he appeared to be.

Today was a special day for Andrew as it was his 14th birthday. Saint Martha's Home for Youngsters always celebrated their childrens birthday in every way it can. To celebrate this birthdayk the caretakers prepared a Chinese Food dinner along with a yummy cake at a table not too far away. At his seat at the picnic table, Andrew Marks waited silently and patiently while the other teens cheerfully talked among themselves. The serpentine boy was often quiet, keeping to himself, having not any reason to talk to his peers, but rather his snake.

Nice day, today. Andrew spoke telepathically to the yellow boa as he gazed through it's eyes, Can't believe it's my birthday already. Fourteen, but, Rango? Wonder what the caretakers got for me.

Indeed, Andrew. Happy Birthday. replied Rango as he stared at the Caretakers table, giving his master and friend a good look at the food and a small stack of presents, Forgive me for not getting you any thing again except for the continuation of our companionship. I am but snake after all.

Andrew couldn't help but make a fang baring laugh, telling Rango that it was all okay. The boa has been such a good friend these past years and that was all Andrew wanted. The laughter got the attention of some of the kids sitting nearby who gave him odd looks. The snake boy noticed them by their sudden silence and had Rango stare right back at them. "What?" he asked in a hissing snake-like manor, "Can't Rango and I talk without being stared at like some sort of freak, even if I am one?!"

The children's eyes narrowed and looked away from Andrew, returning to their own conversations. Andrew pouted in disgust at what most children thought of him. He remembered past bullying that only stopped after setting off a bunch of snakes upon his cruel peers. His moment of unhappiness ended as quickly as it began, however, as the caretakers quickly called for everyone's attention.

"Okay children, get in line now." spoke out an elderly woman, the one who discovered Andrew fourteen years ago, "Lunch is ready to be served in a orderly fashion. Remember to let Andrew come up front to be served first. Today is his birthday after all."

Andrew grinned in excitement and with Rango's sight got out of his chair. Excited to celebrate his birthday, he walked up to his caretakers in a blind-like fashion developed after ten years of true blindness. As he collected a plate of delicious Chinese food, the boy couldn't help but sing the birthday song in a nice happy hum.

"Happy Birthday, Young Andrew." greeted the elderly woman, after giving him enough food, "You're going to like the cake we made for you and the excellent presents we got for you. Have fun now everyone once you get your food."

Red

Red leaned against a nearby wall as he continued to listen to the entire debate that was going on around the room silently. As silly as it may have been for them to be arguing over something as trivial as a name to call themselves, he understood just how much weight such a thing would carry. In today's world filled with various superhuman groups vying for power, whether it was for good or evil, public perception was everything. If you ended up on the wrong side of the people, you could end up being labeled as a bunch of rouge superhumans instead of heroes, regardless of what actions you took. Red knew this all too well, as he himself was scene in a more negative light at least in regards to law enforcement which saw him as no more than a vigilante who used his fists instead of a courtroom to deliver justice.

Still, the whole bit was frustrating to watch, as the argument turned into whether or not naming themselves after the fallen superheroes who originally called this island their base of operations. Personally, Red wasn't too bothered about it, but nor was he a fan of it. Sure, attempting to honor the fallen could be seen as respectable, but at the same time the name would only cause bad memories to resurface as well as keep the group from having their own identity. In Red's opinion, he thought it'd be better to just wait and see whatever the public decided to name them. That's how he got his own nickname, and it worked for him.

Halfway through the debate, Red noticed the girl from the incident arriving late. In her arms was several cups of what he could smell to be coffee, something he was desperately craving. He took the cup gratefully, offering a small nod to Yoshiro as she handed it to him. He hadn't spoken to her much since the incident, only briefly acknowledging her when she said hello to him whenever the two ran into each other on the island.

So it came to much of his surprise when he took a sip of his coffee and found it to be exactly how he liked it, mixed with a small amount of hazelnut cream and mocha flavoring. Red didn't know how this girl knew this, but he was impressed none the less. He made a quick note to himself to be more aware of his surroundings when he went out for coffee and other things, as it was clear that people noticed him and thus could discover patterns. Patterns weren't a great thing to have in case certain rougher elements of society wanted you dead, a lesson Red knew all too well.

Red started glancing around the room, the sound of debate continuing as various members put their own two cents into the discussion. Red planned on speaking out eventually, but he knew he didn't have much to say. He wanted to let everyone that had the biggest points in first and then he'd speak up. Once again, Yoshiro managed to catch him by surprise when their two eyes locked from across the room. The girl gave him a warm smile, something Red didn't often receive. Taken by surprise, Red awkwardly raised a hand up in a mock wave, his face's color matching his nickname as blood rushed to his face. Against his will, the feeling of the girl's body resting in his arms returned to his mind, staying there for quite some time before Red could forcefully push the memory deep within the confines of his mind.

The sound of a certain 80's song brought Red's attention back into reality, as he turned to see his guardian's face being hit with a frying pan on a loop that was in synch with the music. Seeing this caused Red to sigh as he shook his head disappointedly. If only these people knew how worse it actually is, he thought before getting up from the wall to speak up.

"I'll agree to that."

He looked around the room, a serious tone in his voice as he did.

"In regards to this whole name argument, I think the point should be less on what we call ourselves and more about what we actually do. As long as we do the whole superhero crap that the public practically drools over, we could call ourselves the, as was previously mention, Rainbow Fighters and still be okay. And I don't know about you guys, but the whole reason I'm here is to put the bad guys away so that others don't have to deal with their shit. Whatever else they call me is irrelevant."

Red paused to take a small sip from his coffee before returning to lean back against the wall. His voice softened as he finished with one last thought.

"But I do think Young Bloods have a bit of a better ring than Rainbow Fighters."

As the others voice their support for Mars's proposal, Wendy felt herself wavering. She wasn't scared of a little bad press. No, what she feared was far, far worse. She'd been hunted during her childhood, chased across the country by both normal law enforcement and small-time superheroes, and it wasn't a something she wanted to experience again. The last thing she wanted was for someone to see her face, or hear her name, and cause that part of her life to begin again.

"If you guys want to take that name, well Roy and I are out voted.” She said, admitting defeat. “And I suppose it is better than Rainbow Warriors.”

Team Meeting Continued
The room burst into laughter at Alexis' antics, having successfully lightened the mood after some intense back and forth. That plus Kiris' moment of talking with her mouth full brought much needed levity to the situation. Roy was struggling to contain his laughter, not being one to care if Red was annoyed by the joke. Mars was a little worried about Red's reaction however, and was glad to see that he didn't take it too seriously. Even Naja couldn't help but give an amused smile at the scene playing out on the television.

Then Mars felt a soft nudge to his left and heard Kiris' question, "Uh well, that's Quick Shot. He's a hero from New York City." He said, his tone a little hushed. "He leads the Freedom Fighters, who are a hero team there. They're uh... not very good. That clip is from a time when Quick Shot was fighting a villain named Iron Chef and well... he hit Quick Shot with a frying pan as he made his escape. People caught it on film and it spread across the internet like wildfire." He told her, it was strange to speak so matter of factly about such a humorous and popular subject.

Then he heard Red's comment and wasn't surprised that Red didn't care about the name but was glad to hear that he didn't oppose his idea. After that, Wendy admitted she was outnumbered and agreed to accept the name. Mars felt a little bad, he didn't want his idea to be forced upon her like that, especially when it seemed it mattered to her. His thought was interrupted by Naja however. "Thank you Wendy, that's very mature of you. An important part of being a team, is being able to make personal concessions for the betterment of the team." The supervisor told the group. "It seems the majority of the group agrees that Young Bloods is an appropriate and desired name. Any other disagreements?" The group seemed to all be looking at Roy.

The shadow hero shock his head softly, "If it's what people want, I'll handle the backlash, wasn't like my time with the JQ wasn't filled with controversy, no reason this should be any different." Mars smiled, he had stood up for something and saw it come to fruition.

"Very well, nice to meet you Young Bloods. Amir was right, the name is going to mean what you make it mean, so wear it with pride and there is no limit to the good it can accomplish. Now, I know you all wanted to celebrate the 4th of July, so I've kept you long enough. Team dismissed."

"Yees, barbaque time!" Roy, shouting, jumping up from the couch and running out the door.

A little while later, Wonder Island Beach
Roy wasted no time getting the party started, he had already spent a decent amount of the last two weeks making the beach a party spot. He had bought a few barbecues to cook on and had set up a beach volley ball court, he even bought can jam for the team to play. There were a bunch of picnic tables set up, and Roy stood in front of the grill, in his bathing suit with no shirt, cooking hamburgers and hot-dogs as well as a few veggie burgers just in case. There was a cooler of drinks too, all non alcoholic as Naja had made clear there would be no alcohol on the island and she had used the voice she used to talk to villains when she had said it so Roy didn't dare challenge her.

Angelica hadn't come outside yet, Roy doubted she would. A beach party would mean they'd have to see some part of her that wasn't covered by her purple combat armor, Lord knows that can't happen he thought to himself, rolling his eyes softly as he flipped a burger.

Mars however embraced the theme and was currently sitting in the sand and building a sand castle. Well, it was more of a sand city, that expanded easily five yards, it had a city hall, a town square and even a dog park. The most impressive part was he had only been working on it for 20 minutes or so, thanks to the help of the small little robots he had brought to help. Each of them looked like children toys, but they were fully functioning bots that Mars was able to control with his mind. They each were assigned specific jobs, and when Mars was finally satisfied, they could be seen high-fiving each other in celebration. Amusingly enough Mars even aimlessly had one the more human looking bots doing "the robot".

Red

Red stood around the beach, resting in the shade while sipping on a bottle of water. He had reluctantly changed into a pair of swimming trunks and had decided to ditch his shirt, a move that he knew he was going to regret once a sunburn developed on him. He normally avoided the beach exactly for that reason, not to mention that summers tended to be the most active time for criminals and he felt that his time was better spent on patrol.

Still, he had decided to stick around, for what reasons he had no idea why. He tried to justify it by saying it was necessary for team cohesion, but deep inside his heart he knew that wasn't the case. No, the real reason was something that he'd never admit, not even to God himself. It was because he quite frankly needed a break from the stress that came with his current...hobby. Sure, he had both the intelligence, physicality, and finances to give him all he'd ever need for crime fighting, but at the same time he was still a kid. Now granted, he'd seen enough bloodshed and death to make grizzled war veterans blush, but basic human physiology urged him into wanting to enjoy life. This meant doing reckless things like partying, drinking, and talking to...girls.

He felt himself squeezing his water bottle at that last thought. He knew he didn't have time for such trivial things as trying to drool over them, but at the same time his late-adolescent brain often tried to drown out that logic with emotions he fought too often to keep buried. Quick Shot had often given him grief for his efforts, telling him he needed to find a girl that "Will deal with your shit and make you bearable for the rest of us." Red normally got him to shut up though when I mentioned his own dating situation, which he'd make up some excuse.

Red let out a small sigh before looking around for something to get him from thinking so much. He noticed a volleyball court had been set up already, yet nobody had yet to start up a match. While the thought of having superhumans trying to play a game that most regular humans enjoyed brought up several issues in his mind, Red decided it was at least worth a try to see how it'd go. Placing his water down on the table next to him, he walked over to where the court was and picked up the volleyball that was laying down in the sand. He looked around towards where the others were all at. I hope this ends better than I think it will, he thought before speaking up.

"Anyone wanting to play? We can do Doubles and play to ten."

Carter Graystone

Carter was again, mostly just chilling during this party. Even though he wasn't as nervous or afraid as he was during the Wonder Island Party, he was mostly trying to stay out of everything and generally not make a scene. It wasn't that he was antisocial, more because of the prospect of freely interacting with girls in bathing suits slightly scared him some. He figured if he tried, he would just make a fool of himself. He always did around girls, every time. Every damn time.

So Carter mostly stood under the shade of a tree, sipping a Coke he had plucked up from the cooler. Just going through the regular locomotions. His earbuds were firmly implanted in his ears, playing a favorite song of his. He was dressed in a T-Shirt and swim trunks, as he hadn't exactly wanted to go bare-chested yet. Sip coke, repeat, sip coke, repeat, over and over, that was the plan. The sun and the water were nice, as well as the soft sand underneath Carter's worn sneakers.

Soon, Red picked up a volleyball and started asking if anyone wanted to play. Carter slowly smiled, and finished the last dregs of Coke and tossed it into a garbage bin. This would be fun. His powers, volleyball? A match made in heaven. His mind was already flashing with images of him spiking the ball with ferocity into the sand, grinning at the opponents defeat. He cracked his knuckles and made his way forward.

"Sure, I'll play. I don't expect it to be too challenging, though." He gave a small relaxed grin, just to show he was only joking, as always.

Wendy sat on the beach, dressed in a cute navy-blue two-piece swimsuit that her foster family had bought for her last Christmas. Her face was buried in a tablet, engrossed in one of the novels on it. Wendy didn't really get what was special about today, well she knew it was Independence Day, but that hadn’t meant much to her when she had been on the run. She was sure one of the group was planning some sort of fireworks display, probably Mars or Alexis, but beyond that July 4th wasn’t different from any other day.

She heard Red trying to start a volley ball game up, but given how bad gym normally went for her, she than inclined to take him up on it. Instead she followed her stomach’s command for food, making her way over to Roy. Roy’s almost childish zeal in starting the party as soon as Naja had dismissed them hadn’t gone unnoticed by Wendy. Given his normally brooding nature, this shift was… kind of cute to see.

“So,” She asked as she walked over to the grill. “Any of the food ready yet?”

Once the meeting was done, instead of heading straight towards the beach to party with the rest of her teammates, Alexis had headed back down into her laboratory, hoping to find at least a few gadgets that she could use (or repurpose) to enhance the beach party experience somehow. After rummaging through her things (and some of Mars', though that was largely on accident), she finally found something that she suspected the other teens would like, and shoved all of the relevant items into a box, before carrying it out of her lab. However, on a whim, she decided to head up to the meeting room instead of heading to the party already, wondering if there were any leftovers from the snacks that CASSANDRA had prepared for the meeting.

"With Kiris there, I doubt it, but... might as well check." She told herself as she walked up the stairs to the second floor. Approaching the door to the meeting room, Alexis heard sounds coming from inside and tilted her head, wondering why anyone would be there instead of at the party, though she had a hunch of whom it might be. After thinking it over for a moment, she decided that she might as well butt in and, placing the box down next to the door, she walked in and looked around. Indeed, just as she had suspected, Frostbite was there, still clad in her usual uniform and sitting on one of the three couches.

"Hey there, frosty girl." The blonde greeted, hoping her little intrusion wouldn't be met with a scowl or a snarl or worse from the aloof vigilante. "Why are you here all by yourself? I mean, I know you don't really wanna show us your face and hey, that's cool, I'm not going to question your style, but you could at least come down and eat a couple of burgers with everyone else y'now?"

Wyatt felt that he had spoken his piece and decided to help himself to some of the snacks Cassandra brought. He didn't want to seem impolite. "Thank you. I probably should have eaten a bigger breakfast." Everyone had spoken their piece about whether or not the Young Bloods was a good name. There was a pretty good snicker from everyone, himself included at Alexis's shenanigans with the TV. The videos never got old no matter how many times he watched them. That seemed to dispel the mood surrounding the name a bit which was good. So far, he had mixed opinions. Sure the whole debate was settled, but he was hoping that at some point there would be some training so he could figure out how to use his powers without burning the forest.

The Beach

Not what he expected. It wasn't that he didn't like the beach, quite the opposite, but he would have preferred the group learning and practicing with their powers. He did not want to wind up like the Wonder Warriors did: overconfident, undertrained, and generally disliked. Hopefully they were just going to ease them into it, so he figured that he should try to make the best of it. It was kind of awkward at first, because he didn't know too many people beyond their first names. It probably didn't help that he wasn't exactly social to begin with.

Thankfully someone decided to start a game of volleyball and was inviting anyone who wanted to try. There was his opening, he might as well take it. "Oh, sure." He responded. "I've never played more than once, so I'm probably going to be pretty bad."

He wondered if he could cheat and use his wings.

San Diego Docks

When Violet got to the docks, she was steaming mad. For some reason, every single car on the street seemed to be trying to stop her from getting to her destination, all the traffic lights working against her. The only thing that kept her from exploding on the next person who cut her off was the promise of being able to beat up some bad guys.

She parked far from where the police scanner said the criminals would be, not wanting to spook them. She slowly walked across the empty lot, which was barely lit by dim streetlights, her anger and impatience threatening to overtake her. She almost rushed them as she got closer, prepared to use the element of surprise. She hid behind a stack of crates just in time after hearing a shout, worried she had been found. Peering over, she saw that someone had already engaged the drug dealers, and he was definitely not a cop.

The shout had been an order apparently, as the various thugs unloaded their guns on the man in front of them. She was shocked to see an entire force field of dim blue electricity erect itself in front of him, the bullets thumping harmlessly off of it. Violet couldn't pin his identity, her eyes scrunched up as she attempted to see through his shield. The shooting stopped for a second, and she could see the thugs scrambling to reload. She was still in shock over their attacker; she knew every single professional hero in San Diego; some personally, others simply from stories and the news. This man was none of them.

Her shock was slowly replaced with anger as she watched him take out the entire group in a matter of seconds, while she hid, unable to move. When he began to injure one of them, beating him when he was done, her anger finally took over. She sensed all the bullets on the ground, their locations and their states. A majority of them were littered in a circle around him, and she shuffled over, picking them up off the ground with her gravity and then repelling them in a straight line towards him while he spoke to the man he appeared to be killing.

Seething, she looked at him, a sense of pity for the thugs and also a large amount of jealousy. "Do...not...kill...them" she yelled over, pausing between each word with barely restrained anger. She breathed slowly, trying to calm herself; she knew she was overreacting, and the many shrinks she had been with when she was with her parents had taught her a variety of self-control tricks. Slowly, she exhaled, still glaring at the man.

On Wonder Island

Soon after, Nathan's thoughts were interrupted by a quick procession of his teammates out of the room, talking about the 4th of July celebration that Roy had prepared. He simply rolled his eyes; it was just like him, being all peppy. Instead, Nathan was mischievously smiling at the thought of something else. Before Mike left, Nathan caught his eye and called his name.

"Hey. You wanna work on that explosion thing now?"

On Tolaer

Yierneg was tempted to follow the man back, but knew better. To follow him would be to show dependency, and showing dependency was showing weakness. Instead he stared off into the horizon, pretending to be unbothered by his circumstances. But he was anything but unbothered.

The man had given him two options: stay here, protected from his brothers, and learn magic without the mages tracking him; or be vulnerable back in Canada, in hiding. The answer seemed obvious at first, but this place was more of a prison than solitude was. He had no access to the real world; he wasn't even sure how he had gotten there. And the man seemed intent on showing himself to be better than Yierneg. He snorted at the thought, clenching his jaw.

He wouldn't show weakness. But he would take advantage of the situation, doing what he needed to in order to protect himself from his brothers. He would stay on the island, learning magic. And he would show himself strong.

Somewhere in the Pacific Ocean

Asha swam underwater, kicking her legs and waving her arms systematically. Normally she would've used the water to speed her up, but she needed to go slow, honing in on the cries of one of her creatures. It sounded like a sea turtle, probably stuck in some trash. She knew her creature did not have much time, but the turtle was too distressed to send a clear message of where she was.

Finally she caught up to her, her flippers waving frantically. She had been going through one of the humans' garbage patches, searching for something to eat. Asha rushed to free her, corralling the rest of the garbage and determining no one else was trapped either. Once the turtle was freed, she thanked Asha multiple times, swimming around her in joy and making a sort of "chirping" sound.

Asha smiled in response, laughing joyously. Once the turtle calmed down, she continued to swim around lazily, eyeing the trash warily, before eventually swimming away.

"She's happy," a voice echoed in her mind, causing another bit of laughs from Asha.

She turned her head to look at her companion, a baby humpback whale. It may have been a baby by her species standards, but she was still much, much larger then Asha's human form. Del, as Asha called her, had met Asha shortly after being separated from her pod, as a mere calf. Asha took her in and cared for her until she was large enough to survive on her own, but she refused to leave. Asha didn't push the subject too much; she enjoyed the company.

Asha turned her head towards the large patch of garbage. She had been finding more and more wherever she went. She sifted through it once again, making sure no on else was stuck, before smiling. She knew exactly what to do with it; it had become routine. And this was her favorite part.

She once again brought the garbage into a group, warned everyone in the way, and then began speeding along towards land, the garbage right beside her and Del not too far behind. She dumped it all on a very populated beach, smiling at the disgusted "Ugh!" that soon populated the shore.

Teaches you right! she thought, before turning back to Del and swimming farther away from shore so no one would see them. She transformed into a dolphin and playfully sped alongside her, racing to see who would win, laughing all the way. Asha's life was by no means perfect, but she enjoyed it all.

Roy
Roy was finishing putting a burger on a bun when Wendy approached him, she was wearing a two piece bathing suit that was cute and seemed high quality. It was bolder than her usual outfits, Roy appreciated that. He smiled when she asked if there was food ready. "Sure is, welcome to Roy's Grill. We've got burgers both veggie and meat, and hot dogs too, what would you like?" He asked, offering to make her a plate. "By the way, what have you been reading? I keep seeing you buried in your tablet, what's keeping your attention?" He asked curiously.

Angelica
Angelica was lazily watching television when Alexis came up to her, asking her to come outside. "There's nothing out there for me." Frost Bite said bluntly. "They don't want me out there, I just make them uncomfortable." She didn't sound angry about it, if anything her tone was resigned. She had never been good at getting to know people, she got used to not having friends. "You should go and hangout with them, I know you want to. You don't have to hang around me in pity, I'm used to being alone."

Hearing the other girl's response, Alexis frowned a little. Sure, Frostbite had proven herself to be the exact opposite of social since day one, but even then she figured a little invite would get her to play along. As it turned out, convincing the older girl to come outside and mingle with the rest of them was going to be a tad more difficult than that. However, the blonde wasn't about to give up; she could be pretty stubborn when she wanted to, and it wasn't like the party couldn't wait a little bit.

"Oh, come on. You just said that you're used to being alone, but it doesn't sound like you like it." She started, nonchalantly jumping onto the same couch and picking up a leftover dorito from the table. "And maybe you make them uncomfortable, but that's just because they haven't gotten to know you yet. Hang out with us a little and I'm sure you'll get along with everyone else just fine." She said, pausing for a moment as she savored the dorito. "Besides, even Wendy and Mars are out there having fun. If a pair of wallflowers get to do it, why shouldn't you?" The blonde girl concluded with a smile that she hoped would be seen as encouraging by the other girl.

Mike Mathews
Wonder Island Meeting Area

Sometimes it took a good laugh to bring people back to their senses, and as the infamous frying pan KO played out on the screen, Mike couldn’t help but let out a chuckle and relax. Their name was important but the ideas and team behind it was what everything was really about.

When the meeting ended and Roy shot out of the room shouting about his barbeque, Mike couldn’t help but find himself a caught up in the idea of team building and friendship. As he got up to leave he even found his mind drifting to the future, while he wasn’t usually an optimist he had a good feeling the newly dubbed Young Blood team. It was then that Nathan called out and proposed a flawless idea.
"Hey. You wanna work on that explosion thing now?"
After pausing for a moment, Mike calmly walked over to him, placed a hand on his shoulder before taking a quick look around. “Let’s not tell Naja” he said plainly as excitement shone through his eyes.

Wonder Island Beach
Not wanting to give time for Nathan to change his mind or for his own sane thoughts to return, Mike dragged Nathan out to the beach in search for an open space for their ‘testing’. At the same time, Mike was also hunting a decent sized stone to detonate. The downside to looking in a beach he figured, was that the rocks tended to be sedimentary. Whenever he tried to set them off the result was never a nice even blast. Fine in most cases, but not something he’d toss to a teammate. Instead he wanted to find something more solidly built, that way he could put in a fuse and give a proper warning before the release. Interrupting Mike’s chain of thought was Red’s call to volleyball and the realization that he had been absorbed in his own thoughts. ‘See, this is exactly why no one picks us for group work’ he thought as he began to understand how he was about to completely skip over socialization.

“Hey Nathan?” He finally called out, deciding he shouldn’t let the chance to better understand his teammates slide by. “I’ve been thinking. Why did you join the team?” As he tossed another stone back to the ground he realised how what he said could be misunderstood and continued “As in, why do you want to be a hero? Truth be told, apart from your power and how you use it, I don’t really know much about you.” While talking another rock, not much larger than a tennis ball, caught his attention. Bending over to pick it up, he gave it a small toss up and down before settling on it and turning to face Nathan and making sure that they weren’t too close to put anyone in danger or too far so that they might miss the food when it came.

After voicing his approval for the name Wyatt, Mike, Amir, and Carter all gave their consent to the name but Wendy was the only other one to disapprove of the name alongside Naja and Roy. Their points didn't really get through his head. After all, what's the point of making a new superhero team if your group's formation bypasses the public's eye.

During the ongoing debate two of the girls, Yoshi and Cassandra, passed out snacks and coffee to everyone willing to have them. Giving a brief thank you to each of the girls he took a brief sip of the coffee bristling in surprise upon figuring out it was his favorite. A nice simple hot mocha with nothing extra. Absolutely nothing. It was quite eerie how the girl picked out his favorite despite the two never uttering a word to each other. He'd have to keep an eye on her just in case.

However, the simple act of keeping the mocha in his mouth would prove to be a difficult challenge to take on an as Alexis played the Quickshot-Frying Pan meme on the big TV. In the middle of his laughter Casimir started worrying shout Naja's reaction, but she seemed to be enjoying herself too. It kind of made sense that she wouldn't be so uptight and would let herself laugh. They were teenagers after all and a stern authority figure would suck any enjoyment about being in a superhero team. After Red and Wendy let out their final thoughts, Naja welcomed the newly christened team and set them off to celebrate as a group which would surely accomplish great things in the years to come.

Casimir hated the sun. It was hot and blistering and it shined brightly everywhere. Although he guessed he could put up with it for a while if it meant hanging out with the new team. He preferred the much calmer sun of the beaches near his hometown since they cast a much more somber light than the harsh rays down south. His snow like skin and black hair made him a living beacon at the beach with his outline only being broken by his black swimming trunks. Adjusting his sunglasses, Casimir bit into his third barbecue hamburger angrily.

His thoughts wandered to worrying about how his new teammates would react once they found out his superhero identity. It's not like he was lying to them, but more like withholding information until it was needed. He had been avoiding looking at the video comments of his mutant fights out of a vague fear that people thought he was a brutish savage. It's not my fucking fault. Those monsters had to be put down. I was the only one who could do it...At least no one knows their origin. Then I'd be fucked, he thought finishing the last pieces of his fourth burger.

Red shouting about playing a game of volleyball caught his interest as he stood up to throw away his plate into a trashcan. It looked like Wyatt and Carter had also decided to take his invitation. Walking bristly towards the court, Casimir spotted Kiris.

"Hi Kiris!," shouted Casimir waving his hand while swiftly walking towards the volleyball court. "Hey Red! Mind if I'm the final player?" Gingerly asked Casimir upon reaching the court.

Red

Red couldn't help but a sigh a bit as he realized just how...interesting this game of volleyball would go down. He'd done his fair share of "studying" on all of the newly named Young Bloods, finding out a level of information on them all through means that would make the NSA blush. And by no means was he finding out what their favorite brand of cereal was. Oh no, far more than that. Their backgrounds, who they associated with, their abilities, and most importantly, their weaknesses. It wasn't like Red didn't trust anyone here, he just needed to have a contingency plan for everything. He even had one on himself, something that proved the most difficult for him to compile ironically.

Carter Graystone, 16 years old. A past not unlike mine, the kid had bounced from foster family to foster family as a kid until he eventually reconciled with his birth mother. Unbeknownst to her, Carter possessed the ability to manipulate air flow to his will, a power that had serious implications if used by the wrong pair of hands. Planned countermeasures for him included ambushing with high velocity projectile fire, of which he seemed to have the most trouble with when caught off-guard. Fortunately, the kid had fallen on the right path and chose to use his powers for good. Something I could appreciate, even if his personality was a bit to be desired.

Casimir Herman, 17 years old. Raised in a peaceful small town that eventually became overwhelmed with a small-time gang, he alone stood up against the criminals. Respectable, but foolish considering the lack of training he possessed. However, between his self-made power suit and apparent ability to communicate and control insects. Planned countermeasures include forcing him into a location pre-treated with insecticides and disabling his suit via miniature EMP grenades. He was a shy kid though, so I doubted he'd ever cause much harm. Plus, he seemed to be a fellow motorcycle enthusiast, so he earned some respect there as well.

Wyatt Sutherlund, also known as Bael Da'Chataka, 16 years old. My information on him wasn't great, since most of it was based off what he'd told us. Any searching I did elsewhere on his race, the Dra'Qunniat, turned up blank. From what i could gather, the race in their natural form appeared to be an ancient humanoid dragon race whose origins are still shrouded in mystery. His family had stayed under the radar for years, so for him to be in his natural form now was certainly a good sign of trust from him. Planned countermeasures included forcing him into enclosed areas followed activation of cryogenic devices. Wyatt, as I decided to address him as, had stayed under the radar for years now, and I doubted that he'd try and start anything now that would otherwise jeopardize his family's position. Still, with so many uncertainties I planned on getting further information on both him and his kind.

These thought rambled on in Red's head for several moments before he realized he was just standing there silently, something that would probably at least raise some type of suspicion from the others. Red shook his before glancing at the others, pausing for a moment before pointing at Casmir.

"We'll be partners then, Carter. Casimir and Wyatt, you can be on the other side. First team to ten wins, standard rules."

He let out an awkward sigh before continuing.

"Let's try not to get too crazy with our powers here, okay? Last thing we need is to end up blowing up half the island while spiking a ball."

The teams set up, Red looked over to Carter to ensure he was ready. Red had picked him mainly due to the fact that he knew if anyone had the best powers to use in this game, it'd be him. While he had hoped on there being no foul play involving powers, Red wasn't stupid enough to think that that would happen. Once he made it clear he was, Red took a deep breath before jumping into the air and launching the ball over the net towards the other two.

The game had begun, and Red prayed for the best.
