Nahum Afewerek is leader of the Social Democratic Party. He wishes to gain control of Parliament and become Prime Minister.

He was Speaker of the House of Deputies, the lower house of Parliament, from 1984 to 1993, and has served as an MP for a district in Dub City's Boulevard neighborhood since 1998.

Foreign journalists are welcome to ask any question they like regarding the policy stances of him or his party.

This is a image of his party's political orientation, as compared to the other parties:

"We believe that Motuma and his Cabinet has done well in some areas, but failed in others. They have done well in strengthening safety standards for our burgeoning space program, restricting young people's access to inappropriate websites, and encouraging women to enter the sciences. But under Motuma, our environmental regulations have been dismantled, tax cuts for the rich have been paid for with cuts in assistance to the poor, income inequality has skyrocketed, and nothing has been done about the cost of healthcare."

"Our platform is based on the concept of social democracy. Social democracy means that there is a commitment to democratic institutions, state regulation of the economy to protect the common good, and a society that takes care of its most vulnerable." Afewerek pulled out a list of goals...

Social issues:

Enact marriage equality and anti-discrimination laws, and defend LGBTQ rights nationwide.

Reform the immigration system, and encourage the integration of immigrant and non-immigrant communities.

Restore public funding for the arts, and make supplies and equipment needed for the arts exempt from sales tax.

Reform the criminal justice system, ending mandatory minimums for possession of soft drugs and hard alcohol, and other victimless or non-violent crimes.

Blocking any attempt by the Government to repeal World Assembly resolutions regarding same-sex marriage, abortion, gender-adequation procedures, and euthanasia. Immediately change domestic legislation to comply with international law.

Economic issues:

Create government programs to guarantee work, especially for the working class, during economic downturns.

Renegotiate trade agreements to include protections for the environment and labor.

Invest more in state-run firms, such as Brukian Investments and Bruclear.

End special sales taxes on so-called "sinful products" and introduce special sales taxes on environmentally and socially harmful items such as products like meat and dairy and non-electric motor vehicles. Eventually, taxes should be placed on all goods and services, to offset their environmental impact and fund clean energy programs.

Rebuild the state-run hospital network operated by the Health Ministry, by building two new hospitals and expanding existing ones.

Provide a tax credit for all Brukeans to help with the cost of health care and insurance.

Restore subsidies for the biotechnology industry.
