Irreligious Discussion Thread: Welcome to the Nonery!

Postby Ashlak » Sat Dec 09, 2017 8:22 pm

I made this thread to talk about things like atheism/agnosticism, criticism of religion, skepticism, separation of church and state issues, living as a non religious person in a religious culture or family, and things of that nature.

I had been a passive atheist for a long time. I didn't believe in god, but I couldn't make myself say it for a long time. I finally worked up the nerve to say it right before the worship session. Almost passed out, but glad I did it. :)

Why do we need a thread for this? I'm mostly asking as a personal question rather than as a mod because I am atheist and I don't see the point of it.

There's a certain pride that follows being the OP of a continuously growing thread. I assume that's why anyone starts any thread here.

Many irreligious have vastly different views on a variety of issues. I don't see the harm in having a thread to discuss them.

Sort of agree, sort of like ‘discuss not being a hamster, how has not being a hamster affected your life and views’.. and then it just devolves into a hamster bashing thread.

I feel like it's getting together a group of people who don't like golf.
"...I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

Damn hamsters, always pushing their hamsterness on others.
Most of the time I have no idea what the hell I'm doing or talking about.

You guys are completely justified in having your own thread. I just wonder what you guys would even discuss, tbh.....

Not to mention that this thread split off from LWDT, so I assumed you would think this thread was a "revisionist hellhole".

They can, there’s plenty of threads that have nothing to do with religion, just ‘discuss the absence of something’ is a bit odd.

I'm inclined to agree here.

While there's nothing wrong with having an irreligious thread, there's very little discuss concerning a lack of belief in something, unless the thread serves as a possible umbrella thread for overall irreligious issues and curiosities, such as:

The Irreligious and Religion itself: There are some who are irreligious who greatly dislike religion, whilst there are those who actively attend churches or religious services as a community or cultural activity, or actively identify with a spiritual side that's not religious.
Religiousness and the law: Take the seven states in the US that have laws that prohibit atheists to run for elected office, or the heavily prevalent religious overtones in greater politics around the world.

Ummm... That's all I got really atm?

I used to go to a skeptics group at my university pub. It was mostly discussing the latest Scientific American with a pint.

We could discuss the latest Scientific American without a pint, I suppose.

Presumably these aren't actually enforced, since it should take a court about 2 nanoseconds to straighten this out.

But we could create a scientific American thread. We don't need an irreligious thread to discuss that
