[SUBMITTED] Relocating The Living Room

Postby Baggieland » Thu Dec 07, 2017 3:00 am

As was mentioned in another draft recently, there aren't many issues for psychotic dictatorships. The few that are seem to focus on turning them away from their current path. So, for all you dictators out there, this one's for you.

[TITLE] Relocating The Living Room

[DESCRIPTION] As your population is now @@POPULATION@@, your military chiefs have come to you to discuss the issue of lebensraum.

[VALIDITY] must have a large military, a population of at least half a billion

[OPTION] "What are you waiting for?" hollers Vice Admiral @@RANDOMNAME@@. "Send out our navy, fill those ships with marines and let's start claiming new lands. One by one those nations will fall, then we can conscript their men, plunder their natural resources and don't stop until the whole world is under our control. Let's start with Tasmania, they will thank us for it in the end."

[EFFECT] pieces of white paper are in short supply as world leaders want to appease @@LEADER@@

[OPTION] "I think a full-on invasion might turn out costly and embarrassing for us," muses General @@RANDOMNAME@@. "The inhabitants of these countries were only armed with sharpened fruit 200 years ago, but now they have a modern military with equipment to rival our own. Take a look at this map of the South @@REGION@@ Sea. There are nearly a 100 atolls, coral islands and islets which are currently claimed by Tasmania. None of them are inhabited and they are also rich in oil, gas and fish reserves. Let's send our navy there, take over these islands and start building military structures on them. We can even introduce a civilian population on the largest islands. We can nick these islands right from under their very noses!"

[EFFECT] a 9-dash line must be drawn on all maps

[OPTION] "You know, if you recall history, this hasn't always been done by military might," states Air Marshall @@RANDOMNAME@@. "Sometimes countries got conquered via diplomacy. Let's set up diplomatic offices, trade branches and create treaties that gradually wear away other countries' sovereign rights, that way we can still gain control of these places without the violence. But I agree, we should start with Tasmania."

I doubt that people who don't take History would understand what lebensraum is, or any of Germany's picnics in Poland.

Why don't you replace that word with "living space", and say that it is for your rapidly increasing population?

I was wondering how 'lebensraum' would be received! For me, it's a well known word, that everyone of my generation knows.

No.2, you obviously know this word too; so far that's 100% of all who have commented here!!!!

I understand the word, but agree that you should explain it. Maybe not in the opening, but in the first option, with the guy proposing military expansion, perhaps giving an explanation of why he believes that territory is needed.

Lebenstraum is pretty much expanding so you have more space to grow crops and feed a growing population. So either you conquer uninhabited yet fertile land, or you force people off the land they cultivated. Or at least, that's what I've been told.

That's still 100% of every one that's commented here! :) But I will put an explanation in there, Candle's suggestion of putting it in option 1 is the way I'm gonna go.

Australian Republic wrote:What if you don't wanna colonise

Then dismiss. Hopefully most psychotic dictatorships will go 'yes, this is the issue I've been waiting for'!

Australian Republic wrote:Option 2- if your entire purpose for colonisation is to gain more land for your people, how do unihabital islands help

Then there's no problem to implant your own citizens. However, I think you're onto something there Aussie. I'm gonna change the description a bit, so it's not all tiny coral islets, I'll put some larger islands in there so it fits with the theme of living space.

Actually, maybe you're right. Let the few use google, it seems like the majority know the word.

Seems a fair usage of a word. I don’t understand it, used google, but I’m also much younger than some players. I’ve googled words before, no problem to me

Bump, 2nd draft.

Despite the wonderful discussion that this one word has generated, I don't mind putting a little explanation in there. I don't think it detracts from the issue. Also put in Aussie's suggestion.

What an interesting draft! I must say, full-on world domination's probably a little extreme... I'd tone it down just a little for option 1,
but even if kept, it's an interesting idea. :P

Option 1:
Let's start with Tasmania, they will thank us for it in the end.
I'd say a semicolon after Tasmania. :P

Option 2:
only armed with sharpened fruit 200 years ago
Option 2: Great.
Still, I think changing "200" to "two hundred" is more appropriate for a speaker. Not sure, but I think so. :3
sparsely populated archipelago here, which is currently claimed by Tasmania and it is rich in oil, gas and fish reserves
Comma after Tasmania, I think.

Option 3:
Let's set up diplomatic offices, trade branches and create treaties
I'm having a little bit of difficulty understanding this,
are you setting up diplomatic offices and trade branches, and creating treaties,
or are you setting up diplomatic offices, trade actual branches, and create treaties? :?
wear away other countries' sovereign rights, that way we can still gain control of these places without the violence
I'd say either replace the comma with a semi colon or split it into two sentences. :P
But I agree, we should start with Tasmania.
a) I'd prefer a hyphen instead of a comma, but your choice,
and
b) I'm not so sure that I agree. Tasmania's involved with a lot of issues, and I'm not sure what'd happen if they were taken over.
Maybe you can think of a less significant nation, like Moltovea, Althaniq, Wezeltonia(which an take territory from you in an issue, keep in mind), or a new nation?

Also, there's no fourth option that says that if anything you should be shrinking borders?

Overall, a very interesting draft. Good luck, Baggieland. :)

Although world domination is every psychotic dictator's dream, option 1 is only the first foray. What happens after that is still an unknown at the moment. :)

I've implemented most of your suggestions here. I kept '200' because I was taught that numbers one to ten should be in letters, every number above ten should be in numbers.

I know a semicolon should be followed by a reason. I only like hyphens in compound nouns. If anyone can find a link to a page that clearly defines when to use a comma, semicolon, colon, hyphen; I think all of us would appreciate that!

Jutsa wrote:there's no fourth option that says that if anything you should be shrinking borders?

Not sure our psychotic dictators would like that one! :)

I've gone with Wezeltonia, seeming that they took land previously. If you have a reason for choosing Moltovea, let me know. :)

I'm surprised there is no "building up" option, like forcing cities to build higher blocks or deliberately concentrating population into smaller and smaller areas.

ALSO:

Surprised that people don't know the word lebensraum... but then again, I'm both a massive history fan and I speak German so meh. In the spirit of Marie-Antoinnette, let them google it.

That would be the logical solution, but other issues have this option. Limiting the population through a one child policy would also fit here, but that's been done as well. Psychotic dictators prefer to get things done by the barrel of a gun!!
