A Strange New Horizon

OOC Thread
Image

It is the year of Our Lord 1502, a time of discovery and exploration. Europe, a patchwork of warring states, competing political alliances, religious controversy, and ceaseless innovation, has just stumbled across something extraordinary: a decade ago a strange man claiming to be able to sail to the East Indies by going West, Cristobal Colon, found a New World beyond the edges of the map. A New World of riches, opportunity, and exotic new peoples and cultures.

But this is not the story you may be familiar with, no. For where a primitive continent soon to be overrun by Conquistadors and colonists greeted the history you may know, this is a place utterly other, a map unfamiliar, a history diverged. Swarms of swarthy and not altogether friendly natives peer out at the pale-skinned interlopers, chiefs offering sacrifices to strange and powerful deities from atop the heights of temple cities, blue-glowing Wyrdstones shrouded by the hands of shamans summoning storms of malevolent force to turn back the ships that would wish to land upon the shores of the New World. This is a history very different, where even the most intrepid of Europeans have struggled to gain a foothold on the exotic Terra Obscuras, and the risks of venturing into the untamed jungles and monolithic temple cities are dire indeed.

Fortune though, favors the bold. An adventurous man, foolhardy or brave enough to take his courage in his hand, can make a fortune in this New World. A new start for those with no lives left in the lands left behind, untold riches of gold, silver, and the mysterious Wyrdstone to be gathered from the mysterious and treacherous lands over this Strange New Horizon.

Santo Domingo
Located on the Tierra del Fuego, the furthest east island of the New World that Europeans have discovered, this Spanish colony-town is thriving. Located in the Fundal Bay and sheltered from the frequent storms out of the east and boiling up out of the south, Santo Domingo boasts an impressive colonial fort manned by soldiers of the Crown, but little else. A small tavern, the Ansova, makes its home in the slums that cluster about the fortress, and a cathedral is slowly rising from the nearby humid jungle. There are rumors that the Governor, Pedro San Estaba, is gathering forces to make a landing on the nearby native-occupied island of Corazon, and seeking sellswords for such a venture. Transport to the mainland from Santo Domingo is limited, but possible to purchase: the Maria Revuelta sails from the harbor on occasion to trade with the natives of the Cove. There is always work to be done cutting wood for the growing settlement, or quarrying stone for the Cathedral.

Jonestown
The furthest north European settlement, a raucous Charter Colony established by Sir Walter Edmundson in 1499, Jonestown is the jumping-off point for sailors and European powers who are not on good terms with the Spanish. Lacking any real formal defenses, Jonestown relies on intermittent Royal Navy patrols to keep away pirates, privateers, and enterprising ne'er-do-wells. Many trade ships put into Jonestown harbor frequently, and a regular ferry runs to near the native settlements of Oneidas, as well as the Azure Bight. Sir Edmundson sees more profit in trade than war, and so his ships are tolerated by some of the indigenous peoples, but Jonestown is not exactly flourishing without the influx of plundered gold and silver than fuels Santo Domingo to the south.

Oneidas
A great fishing town of the Iroquen people on the shores of the Sea of Sunrise, Oneidas is notable for her high wooden wall and the great Standing Trees where her shamans gather to conduct rituals honoring the Earth Mother. Europeans are not allowed within the walls of Oneidas, but can be seen in the markets near the gates, and are begrudgingly tolerated. Part of the Northern Confederacy and often at odds with the bloodthirsty warlords of the Azure Bight, the inhabitants of Oneidas on the Bay of Blades build small raiding ships that frequently venture south to take slaves and treasure from other coastal settlements.

The Heartspire
The capital city of the dominion of Warlord Grevas of the Huriken people, the Heartspire emerges in its marble and granite glory from the waters of the Azure Bight like a vision of grandeur, her approaches surrounded entirely by water that teems with small boats and floating gardens. From her many quays and wharves the Warlord's ships regularly depart bearing warriors and sorcerers in his campaigns of conquest, campaigns fueled by impressive magicks cast from his seat of power, the Tower of the Stars which sits at the apex of the Heartspire itself, the rock formation from which the city takes her name. Markets teeming with slaves and exotic goods are found throughout the city, and it is rumored that almost anything, even lives and black magics, can be purchased in the underbelly of the metropolis.

Und Karaza
Once a proud and mighty settlement of the Seven Nations, a testament to their collected skill and architectural ability, the City of Stone, Und Karaza, is a shadow of its former past. Ravaged by repeated incursions of the Night Men of the south, and more recently by Spanish depredations, the Council of Elders rules over a city with walls that are falling into disrepair, a garrison that might as well be written on the wind, and crumbling infrastructure that can no longer be maintained as residents of the city migrate elsewhere in search of security. Many secrets are hidden in the ancient Undercity of Und Karaza, which delves down deep into the earth of this strange coastal plateau, so deep few have ever measured its depths. But these secrets may be lost forever soon, for it is all too likely that war and death with soon wash over the last vestiges of the Seven Nations, for their strength is little and their enemies many.

Und Karaza

The Shaman and his pack walk towards the ruined gates of City of Stone. With every step, Whungun could feel scars of repeated battle and the enemies hungry for loot were growing at the crumbling walls.

Whungun had heard stories of the Night Men of South and the Outlanders who try to storm the City.
Und Karaza was the perfect hunting grounds to begin strengthening him and the beast as mercenaries for the prey of the city.

The Shaman walked towards the front guards as he spoke,"My name is Whungun, a shaman with his servants who has came to this city looking for work, I wish to speak to the Council of Elders for my strength could help them with defending this city."

Western Gate, Und Karaza

A half dozen gate guard looked the shaman and his men up and down. Their captain, a burly man with a jagged scar across his forehead, jerked a thumb at the small postern gate behind him.

“The Seven don’t exactly take audiences. If you’re worth a damn in a fight though, see Commander Fir-Anat. Word is he is looking for recruits, or men to solve problems. Just turn left at the market square, the building with the round tower is the Guardhouse.”

Truth be told the captain was distinctly unimpressed by this shaman and his two scruffy associates, but Und Karaza could always use more bodies to smother fires.

Santo Domingo, year of Our Lord 1502

Gabriel stood on the deck of his ship the Comercio and smelled the fresh air of the lively town of Santo Domingo."Come hermanos! , Juan, Carlos, Miguel I haven't got all day we have goods to purchase!" None of these men where his brothers, but he did feel a close kinship with these scoundrels he had hired not too long ago. They where brutish and uncivilized and would betray him in a heartbeat if it met a quick escudo. Still, he hoped God willing that their time together would forge a certain camaraderie.

Has he walked the chaotic streets of the town; he listened carefully as the merchants loudly promoted their goods. He had an idea of what he could buy cheaply in this land, to sell for a profit in other settlements. A commodity that was plentiful in this settlement but lacking in others, something of peculiar value that would turn a pretty profit in the other colonies.Gabriel knew that the New World was connected by a vast and complex web of trade routes that connected the disparate and distant settlements. He just had to be patient and diligent ready to strike a deal whenever it benefited him.Fortunately, as an experienced trader, he was pretty skilled at doing just that.

Marketplace, Santo Domingo

There are few merchants in the sleepy stalls and alleys of Santo Domingo, for it is still early in the season, but after hours of listing, cajoling, and assessing, Gabriel picks up on a few useful rumors and assessments.

It is rumored that the Natives of Karaza and her villages buy iron at a decent profit.
It is rumored that the Natives of Karaza buy weapons at a very good price.
It is rumored that the sea-village of Ter Mandal is offering silver ore at a decent price.

Food seems to be very cheap here - 1 Coin per unit.
Prepared supplies seem to be very cheap here - 1 Coin per unit.
Weapons are expensive here - 1.5x regular price.
Furs are expensive here - 12 Coin.
Barter trinkets are decently priced here - 3 Coin per unit.

Western Gate,
Und Karaza

The Shaman and his servants were allowed in the city. Whungun felt the unimpressed looks upon himself and his servants. It was normal for people not of his tribe to not know of the power he held but they will understand in time.

The city was ruined, the buildings were ransacked, forges were left untouched and people's faces were distruaght than anything else. Whungun saw that the stories were true, the city was dying and whatever history was about to be gone if their enemy breaks through.

Turning left past the near desolate market saw the round tower with soldiers training and a large man who commanded authority was barking orders at them. That was the Commander Fir-Anat and the man who could start the hunt and let the pack run wild.

" Commander Fir-Anat?" The Shaman said getting his attention," my name is Whungun and I have come to get work for fighting the enemies of the city as my powers are quite worth your time and resources. "

Oneidas

Aiyana strolled around the streets of Oneidas with her troop of young archers behind her. For them, it was just a nice, calm walk around the town, listening to birds sing, shamans dance, and people arguing over the price of food. For Aiyana, rather than this being a peaceful hike, it was closer to a scout around the area, looking for a good location to rob. Little did the boys know, Aiyana had no money whatsoever, and the only way they were to survive this week was if they could pull off a bit of a heist. Working for a living would take too long, so robbery is really the only option. The only problem is the gang only has bows and arrows, but attacking a group of merchants would need more of a close quarters weapon. If only there were another gang willing to help, one with a bunch of spears instead of bows…

Trade Mission
"Dios míos!You drive a hard bargain, my friend, but here is the coin you have rightfully earned today" Gabriel said as he brought the cheap trinkets, from the merchant. He would set sail at dawn for Ter Mandal, the mysterious, and illusive sea-village and home of the natives where he could hopefully turn a profit and acquire some of that sweet, sweet silver they were rumored to be offering. With a prayer for calm seas and good fortune to the Almighty, the Comercio sailed for Ter Mandal, with songs heavy on the lips of the sailors.

Zaahir and his own band of men were also visiting the city. The sounds, the sights, and most importantly the smells of the food were welcome for the band of weary travelers. Though the band wasn't going to go hungry or starve soon, dried meat was only good because it didn't go bad as soon as regular meat. One of his men, armed with the only hunting bow still intact, pointed to one of the vendors and asked him if they could eat there. Zaahir could only sigh as he reminded the hunter that they were running low on funds and that unnecessary expenses would leave the men with nothing to be paid with. The other 4 quickly bullied the man for asking to buy food as Zaahir, who looked behind him in dismay to see his men fighting each other, accidentally walked into a woman.

"I'm terribly sorry," Zaahir said as he quietly signaled his men to stop acting like a mob before noticing the woman's beauty and the bowmen who seemed to follow her, "we're just travelers looking for new land to settle and call our own. If there's anything I can do to make up for the rudeness of my men?"

City Guardhouse, Und Karaza

The commander seemed less than enthused at Whungun’s proclamation, looking him over. At length, he begrudgingly spoke.

“Shaman, eh? Know any useful cantrips or spells? Otherwise, pay for guards is ten thals, one coin, in common parlance, every week. You train every morning, regular patrols, promotion at my discretion.”

Port of Santo Domingo

It was the next morning when all the goods were loaded aboard Gabriel’s ship, and eventually they were ready to depart. Of course, there was the matter of knowing where Ter Mandal actually was for a heading.

"What do you mean you idiotas don't know where Ter Mandal is!? Gah, I have do everything myself!" Gabriel said to his subordinates as he stormed off the ship and to the dockyard to ask some sailors if they knew where Ter Mandal is.

“Don’t worry about it, you’re fine.” Aiyana said with a smile. She looked at Zaahir’s men, armed with spears except for the one holding a bow and arrow. They were probably mercenaries, or at least not part of the town guard. This was exactly the kind of help she needed for her job; people that can get in close, kick ass, and grab coin. Fortunately, it also appeared that they were hurting for money too. Due to their assumed profession, Aiyana had no problem with being open about her plans to Zaahir.

“My name’s Aiyana. Listen, I couldn’t help but overhear that your pockets are a little light. I also know those white men outside the gates are packing quite a hefty amount of coin. Are you interested in some… involuntary wealth redistribution? We’ll split it 50/50.”

The proposed plan wasn't unheard of to Zaahir. He had robbed people before, but only out of necessity and generally he frowned upon stooping to the level of robbers. However, the equal split in the money and the chance for him to partner with another warband sold him over to join her.

"The plan doesn't sound bad at all," Zaahir said with a faint smile, mildly uncomfortable with the situation but he knew his men would be more than eager for this. "Me and the guys would be happy to help. Besides, if this scheme of yours works out pretty well maybe it would be lucrative for both parties to stick together."

Port of Santo Domingo

A few hasty inquiries around the city saw interesting results upon the name of Ter Mandal being mentioned. Most men turned aside at the name, muttering to themselves and unwilling to meet Gabriel's eyes, while others crossed themselves and put their heads down, pushing past the inquisitive trader as if fleeing something. Swiftly, though, Gabriel stumbled upon a man in one of the marketplace stalls, an older swarthy man with tattoos in black around his eyes and a heavy sabre on his hip.

"Aye, Ter Mandal. She be one of my frequent stops. The name is Osmod Deitrick, and these be my lads." A half-dozen rough customers, ex-soldiers or deserters, looking up from dicing in a nearby alleyway. "I haven't been there in a few months, but 'twould cost you only a small fee of good King's silver for me to mark her on the map for you. A handful of coin, a dozen, perhaps. Or I do be looking for passage for my lads and I to her briny shores, since I hear ye have a ship."

One of his eyes is obviously false, but the good one is cool gray, an icy sea under storm assessing the new merchant captain's disposition toward the offer.

Whungun nod," I am a channeler of nature. I can call upon the wolves to strike at my foes with the power of the Wolf Mother. I can also summon the powerful Moon Guardians that can fight if she hears my prayers."

The Shaman tried to play it off that he was a servant to the Wolf Mother, but he didn't know the foreign lands east from the Wildlands. The City's lands can still be their hunting grounds but he needed to find a goal before he can start doing the first hunt and marking these lands for his pack.

See you there in a few hours.” Aiyana walked away towards the gate and waved to signal her men to follow her. The lads were disappointed that their peaceful walk had to end, but they obediently followed her orders. They walked through the gate and past the market where it was quiet when Aiyana gave them a quick briefing. The boys all sat down to rest their legs while Aiyana spoke, patiently looking up at her.

Aiyana began “Alright guys, here’s what we’re gonna do: you boys will creep towards the marketplace, stopping when it’s in range. When I say ‘caw caw’, you boys fire and we start killing. Got it? Good.” Without seriously considering any dangers to them, Aiyana walks into the white marketplace and looks around, checking out security, where money is kept, etc. When the chaos of the robbery starts, it’ll be important to know all this.

"Me and my men will move in from the south to secure the areas we want to hit," Zaahir said with a confident smile as he got up as well and went off in a different direction, returning to the food stall the bowman had pointed out. "We'll be going all in on this one to secure us enough cash to live off of for quite some time, so it might be good to have a stomach full of good food," Zaahir said to his men as he handed the 20 gold from his coin pouch to the stall vender asking what he can get for the amount so he could give his men a good meal before the raid.

Action: Buy food to try to increase moral a bit before the raid. (Spending my remaining 20 gold)

One of his eyes is obviously false, but the good one is cool gray, an icy sea under storm assessing the new merchant captain's disposition toward the offer.

Gabriel's looked at the sailor and soon felt a bit uncomfortable they looked like pirates and he didn't trust them one bit.He eyed the scoundrels behind him,he just knew that if he invited them on his ship that they would commandeer it or at least he thought he did.
"Tell you what amigo I like you, but unfortunately I lack the coin once I sell off my cargo I'll come back to pay for the location but for now que Dios te bendiga", he said as he went back to his ship.

"Alright hermanos lets set sail for Jonestown!"

City Guardhouse, Und Karaza

The commander frowns.

"Command wolves? Hm. Handy in the wilderness I bet, but we don't have too many wolves around here. Still, I bet old Ironsides could teach you some useful tricks with that ability, if you have the gift. Tell you what, I'll save you some time- he likes to send new recruits who have the gift down to the Ruined Quarter to root out the half-men there. I know of a nest that looks about your speed, and has been harassing the people in Moonlight District. Burn that out, and come back alive, and we'll talk about your wages and training."

The commander disappeared into the guardhouse for a few moments, re-emerging with a tinderbox and three torches, which he handed to Whungun and his men.

"If you don't come back, well, I have no further use for you." The dour man shrugged, and then nodded toward one of the roads. "Follow Millhouse Way and then turn left before the Temple of the All-Spirit; the den is just through the second silver doorway, though it is deep down in those catacombs. Good luck."

Market Square, Oneidas

A quick reconnoiter of the square revealed a half-dozen guards lounging about at various market stalls, and intermittent private guards keeping an eye on the wares of their masters. Some looked like hardbitten mercenaries, though the guards of the town itself seemed soft enough, just men who drew a bad watch looking out for cutpurses or other petty crime. An unknown quantity, though, were the civilians- Aiyana guesstimated that there were over a hundred men and women coming and going in the square intermittently. Most would run at the first sign of trouble, of course, but even a few deciding to be courageous could be a problem for the force she had assembled.

Zaahir managed to, after a few conversations with the merchants, locate a swill-trader. The spirits were rough, but the lads were feeling boisterous after a good bottle each, spoiling for a fight and singing somewhat sozzled songs. Twenty coins purchased more than they could drink, really, and the remaining alcohol rations were distributed between the men. (Zaahir's party: +4 Morale for 7 Days, -20 Coin)

Harbor, Santo Domingo

It was probably a good idea leaving those obvious pirates behind, and some nervous crewmembers congratulated their captain on his decision once they were out of sight of land. Working the scudrunner with only the few men they had was hard work, but it would fill the hours in the week and a half it would take to sail to Jonestown direct.

January 5th

After four days at sea, one of the crewmen spies a vision upon the high seas; a low-lying island, sandy, with a few trees and lots of rocks. It doesn't appear to be on any of the charts Gabriel possesses, but then again, those charts were little better than guesses in most areas of the New World. Perhaps it would be worth avoiding the uncharted land, but an opportunity to top up their supplies or explore a new island could be useful as well.

Oneidas

After the men had their generous fill of the alcohol they managed to obtain, a somewhat drunk band of men went to the spot they were told to wait at. Zaahir gave his men a steely glare as they began to slouch to remind them to look formal. He waited patiently for Aiyana to join him to discus the plan in further detail since she had gone to scout the area.

"Babuinos más rápidos! we don't have time to explore that island !" The Comercio was at sea for four days and they still had plenty of supplies, and water Gabriel wanted to get to Jonestown as quick as possible to sell off his goods but he did mark the island on his map to explore later...

Action:Continue sailing to Jonestown

Whungun tilt his head at the mention of half-men but the idea of fighting in catacombs could give him and his pack the training in handling their beast-forms. The shaman was admittedly new to the transformation but the spell could work if he can wrestle control of the beast from the Icon. He took the torches and tinderbox as they follow the directions to the task.

The Temple of the All-Spirit was different from the temple the Skinchangers had known in their lands. One thing it lacked was a more, natural aesthetic with trees and predators respecting the Bloodmoon. As they made their way left to the second silver doorway, they were amazed at the ruined, but still beautiful ornate markings.

Whungun opened the door and found a gaping darkness that slowly embraced them as they closed the door behind them. Their eyes slowly adjusted but Whungun had started to feel the wall and hide their equipment.

" Take off your clothes and equipment, we must not have them on when we transform"

Action: Take off clothes and equipment, safely hide them and use the Icon and transform the entire party

It wasn’t long before Aiyana returned to Zaahir. The job didn’t seem too difficult, but nevertheless, she had a plan. If they can rob shops one a time, everything should go well, as long as they do it together. With confidence, Aiyana retold her findings and plan to Zaahir. “So there’s a few guys around with spears, some with cloth armor, some with ceramic, and some with hide. They’re pretty sparsely spaced, so once our archers open fire, they’ll be ducking for cover and we can hit one stall at a time. We’ll always have the numbers advantage, so there’s nothing to worry about. We can leave when our pockets our full. What do you think?”

"Sounds like a good plan," Zaahir said, confident in Aiyana's plan, "you choose the stalls to hit and we'll back you up."

Zaahir grinned as he brought his men into a huddle and told them what they'll be doing. Grins of mecheif and greed on their faces as they broke the huddle, ready to fill their pockets to the brim with loot.

"I think our priority should be speed though. If we can't crack a lock open we should bother fiddling with it. I'd say we could make more cash faster by hitting a jeweler though."

“Agreed. CAW CAW!”

As soon as Aiyana’s bird call was made, her five archers looked at each other. They were unsure if it was Aiyana or a real bird, scaring the pants off them before the battle even began. What if it wasn’t Aiyana? She’ll be so upset if we shoot before she says so. But what if it is her and they don’t fire? She’ll be even more upset! In a panic, the group scrambled to string their bows and aim at the town guards sitting around. They all had years of experience practicing with bows, so a few seconds later, when they did fire, it actually went in the general direction of their target. Even if none of them hit, this was an accomplishment if no one shot themselves in the foot again.

Aiyana never felt prouder than at that moment, but there was no time for being emotionally touched. Confident in her skills and in her faith that her new friends would back her up, Aiyana charged toward the jewelers stand, attempting to Superman punch a mercenary guarding it. Less equipped, less armored and possibly less skilled than the guard, but she didn’t care. As long as her team didn’t bail now, this fight seemed very winnable. She could end up with a mortal wound, but what’s one spear wound compared to how much they’ll get? Nothing.
