FCC to repeal Net Neutrality Bill

Postby Naval Monte » Wed Nov 22, 2017 4:05 am

http://mashable.com/2017/11/17/net-neutrality-thanksgiving/#iS260MNXQmqo

The FCC is quietly about to announce a major change right before Thanksgiving

There's a simple art to releasing bad news — do it when the fewest people are looking.

That's the game plan the U.S. government's media regulator is reportedly following to release its plan to destroy net neutrality rules. The Federal Communications Commission is expected to drop its new plan on Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving. The rules could be voted on by mid-December, leaving the door open for internet providers to begin manipulating traffic.

It's a devilishly brilliant plan by the FCC and its chairman, Ajit Pai, who has made no secret of his wish to undo the benchmark rules put in place during Barack Obama's presidency. There will inevitably be plenty of people already enjoying their holiday break, and any major coverage on Wednesday will then be lost to a day of turkey, gravy, football, and indigestion, followed by three more days in which people won't be looking at the news.

This is the challenge that net neutrality advocates are facing, and they know it. Evan Greer, campaign director at Fight for the Future, posted on Reddit a month ago to start drumming up support.

"There's a reason that Pai is releasing a plan that he knows will be overwhelmingly unpopular with voters from across the political spectrum on one of the busiest travel days of the year when many journalists are out of the office," Greer wrote in an email.

Net neutrality is the concept that the internet should be an even playing field. Whether it's your cousin's blog or Google, net neutrality proponents argue all data should flow the same, meaning no particular persons or companies can be favored by the networks on which the data flows. That keeps big companies from paying for preferential treatment.

This is how the internet has generally operated, but as more services move online, concerns have grown that internet service providers will want to start charging for better access. Net neutrality supporters argue that this would turn the internet into a pay-to-play world, hampering innovations and leaving people to the whims of major companies.

Pai has been working to repeal the FCC's net neutrality rules since the start of his time as chairman, a position to which President Donald Trump appointed him after Pai served as a commissioner under Obama. Pai floated initial rules in May, which led into the usual comment period that FCC rule changes go through.

That process was a disaster, including accusations that the comment system had been manipulated with automated submissions. The FCC has ignored records requests over this situation and now faces a lawsuit over the fiasco. Studies have found near unanimous support among non-form comments for the existing net neutrality rules.

The lack of support for Pai's move informs the tactics with which he's been pushing the news rules. Greer noted that this isn't the first time they've dealt with this.

"That said, we're pretty used to government agencies trying to hide their misdeeds and avoid the news cycle," he wrote. "One of the things that makes the Internet so great is that it makes it much harder for them to do that. We'll be sure to sound the alarm online when Pai's plan comes out, and we'll be encouraging everyone to call their members of Congress and demand that they actually read the plan and have an intelligent position on what's in it."

An FCC spokesperson declined to comment for this story.

Sounding the alarm, however, isn't that easy to do—especially in the time frame required. Net neutrality advocates will have about three weeks before the December 15 meeting in which the FCC is expected to vote. Pai has thus far shown no interest in hearing from such advocates.

This has led Fight for the Future to focus on getting people to reach out to Congress. The organization set up http://www.battleforthenet.com as a place where people can easily call their representatives and encourage them to slow the FCC's efforts.

"Pai has made it clear he doesn't care what the public, or tech experts, or small businesses, or anyone else other than big telecom companies think," Greeg wrote. "But he has to answer to Congress, so the best way for people to make their voices heard right now is to contact their lawmakers and tell them to stop the FCC from voting on this absurd proposal."

Since the previous thread talking about this was locked I made another one because I feel that this topic is too important for it to end with one locked thread. I believe that this move is a terrible one from the FCC has this would give companies even more ways to screw over consumers and harm both them and smaller companies as well.

Now some below me would say that this isn't permanent and that it can be changed back but even if this was the case I still argue that me and every other American must show the government that we do not approve of these changes and that like all previous attempts to take away net neutrality we will unite against bill just like SOPA and PIPA.

So what are your thoughts on this NS? Also please refrain from repeating the same actions that got the old thread locked.

My thoughts? It's bad, but not quite the End of the Internet that some are claiming.

My only hope is this flips the edgy meme crowd from their focus on triggering snowflakes to fighting Trump's attempt to steal their porn and fast internet.

To get them to fight against Trump's attempt to take their fast internet you would first have to spread this news so they would know what is going on.

Oh they know, or at least I'd bet they will. This would ping their radar quicker than you can say 'Pepe'.

If not, someone needs to go yell at 4chan and the like about it.

I thought about it since I'm already on 4chan but I'm not entirely sure which board I would go to honestly. I know if I were to go to /k/ the thread would 404 so I figured I'd leave it to someone else since I'm already busy with writing fanfictions and other stuff.... As for the Net Neutrality bill it should stay, and I hope this gets settled for the moment... As it seems to every now and again. Hopefully this nonsense of throwing a spanner in the works of the internet will cease in the future.

The FCC just announced its plan to slash net neutrality rules, allowing ISPs like Verizon to block apps, slow websites, and charge fees to control what you see & do online. They vote December 14th. But if Congress gets enough calls, *they* can stop the FCC.

We need calls! NationStates may be subjectable to internet tax! The great thing about NS its that its free! Free! Create as many nations as you like! But without net neutrality, ISPs can tax NS or make it slow! Awful! It would kill NS! Max Barry may shut it down! Join the fight!

Than spread the word so that doesn't happen because along with screwing over consumer and average internet users these repeals would screw over other business both out and in the US and just benefit a few companies who already have a monopolistic power on the US internet.

Lol, fears about net neutrality are overblown, and this post is a prime example of this.

"NationStates may be subjectable to internet tax!"

I mean REALLY?? Was that even meant to be a serious concern?? NO ONE is coming after NS. The only at risk sites are basically video streaming services. NS doesn't consume enough bandwidth NOR does it have a high enough profile for anyone to care. You don't NEED to overstate the issue!!

Also, THERE IS A SIMPLE SOLUTION.

USE A VPN.

They can't throttle your services if you use a VPN. If we all just used those simple privacy tools Net Neutrality wouldn't even be an issue.

Also, with the amount of other problems a VPN solves, you should already be using one anyways.

Concerned with your ISP tracking and selling your internet history?? Use a VPN.

Concerned with your anonymity?? Use a VPN.

Concerned with government surveillance or censorship?? VPN.

Concerned with Net Neutrality?? V. P. N.

A very simple solution and you NEVER need to worry about Net Neutrality ever again.

1. NationStates is very popular. The amount of current WA nations is larger than all of the Carribean Netherlands. In all of NS history, the number is probably much larger. It is so popular it received its own section on NationStates' wikipedia page. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NationStates#Popularity. NS receives a lot of activity traffic, and the ISPs will go after it.
2. What about those that can't use a VPN? What about those who can't afford it? Net neutrality is about equality.

Every time there is a regime change in Washington, the FCC rules get changed. Under Obama- it was pro-net neutrality while under Trump- they're attempting to reverse course to be anti-net neutrality. It is ridiculous.

Given how the FCC regulates radio bands to prevent signal conflicts, I propose that it be isolated from the executive branch like the Federal Reserve is. It isn't right that the FCC gets influenced by any presidential administration that comes in. The FCC must be free to operate independently and only have policy guided by what is best for telecommunications overall. The Presidency doesn't have the power to interfere with interest rates or monetary policy, this shouldn't be the case with the EPA or FCC either.

1. Web forum traffic is WOEFULLY INSIGNIFICANT, on the grand scale of things, no matter the popularity of the forum. The data transmitted by streaming video is the largest hit to bandwidth and this is why video streaming services are, historically, the only things that have been threatened by lack of net neutrality. If you don't understand the STARK difference between bandwidth needs of forums and video streaming you honestly have NO PLACE AT ALL in this discussion as you don't even know how this stuff works or what is even at risk. :p

You DO know that NS existed before these NN rules did, right??

2. Anyone can use a VPN. There are free options and, even ignoring those, if you can't afford the LOWER price of a VPN you also can't afford the HIGHER price of high-speed internet in the first place.

The BEST one I know of is just $3 a month!! If you are spending $40 a month on internet yet are balking at that low price, I say you are just making excuses. VPNs are so cheap that if you can afford the internet you can afford them, and you have NO EXCUSE this not to use them. A simple, easy solution: your fears are overblown.

In a perfect world the FCC should be left alone but sadly that would never come to be since most politicians would want the FCC to be influenced by whatever presidential administration is around since they can use it to control how information would be broadcast and shared and giving that up would be like giving up some of their power.

That and I doubt anyone in Congress would be to willing to pass a reform to make the FCC it's own entity especially under this political climate.

I'm pretty sure the vast majority of people can agree that net-neutrality is nice. This is why no one likes the FCC. I guess we can only hope that for once in a blue moon, Congress does something that actually helps the American people.

Said it before, will say it again.

ISPs and big corporations want to make your service more shit to get more money.

You get nothing as a benefit from this.

Ted Cruz, who was an advocate for the removal of net neutrality, was in Comcast's pocket when he was advocating for it.

Also, why are the alt righters who where using the internet to help Trump now shocked *Shocked* that the Trump administration that has Ted Cruz in it now want's to kill net neutrality?

I'm just going to put this here incase anyone wants to call the idiots who have more or less hijacked the US government.

Yes but it's also supported by ads and by donations, so it's unlikely.

...honestly, is it me, or does the American government really want net neutrality deader than Jimmy Hoffa?
