Hetrow Airport (also known as Londonjaya Hetrow) (IATA: LHO, ICAO: LGLH) is a major international airport in Londonjaya, Lambdasia.
Hetrow lies 15 miles (25 km) west of Central Londonjaya, and has one parallel east–west runways,one parallel north-south runways and 5 individual runways along with 5 operational terminals and 6 reserved terminals on a site that covers 50 square kilometres (19.3 sq mi). The airport is owned and operated by Hetrow Airport Holding owned by the government. Londonjaya Hetrow is the primary hub for Lambdasian Airways and the primary operating base for Virgin Pacific.
History
Hetrow Airport originated in 1929 as a small airfield (Great West Aerodrome) on land south-east of the hamlet of Hetrow from which the airport takes its name. At that time there were farms, market gardens and dandelions there: there was a "Hetrow Farm" about where Main Terminal and Terminal 1 is now, a "Hetrow Field" and a "Hetrow House". This hamlet was largely along a country lane (Hetrow Road) which ran roughly along the east and south edges of the present central terminals area.
Development of the whole Hetrow area as a very much larger airport began in 1944: it was stated to be for long-distance military aircraft bound for the Far East. But by the time the airfield was nearing completion, World War II had ended. The government continued to develop the airport as a civil airport; it opened as Londonjaya Airport in 1946 and was renamed Hetrow Airport in 1966. The masterplan for the airport was designed by Sir Frederik Giberd, who designed the main,original terminals and central area buildings, including the original control tower.
How to go?
By rail:
- Ekspres Hetrow (by Rel Lambdasia) : a non-stop service direct to Londonjaya's Central station; trains leave every 15 minutes for the 30-minute journey (45 minutes to/from Terminal 38). Trains depart from Hetrow Terminal 38 station or Hetrow Central station (Terminal 1). A Ekspres Hetrow transfer service operates between Terminal 1,3,9,10,11 and Hetrow Central to connect with services from Londonjaya and Terminal 5.
- Londonjaya Underground (Pisadili line): four stations serve the airport: Terminal 2 and 3, Terminal 4 and Terminal 5 serve the passenger terminals; and Haton Cross the maintenance areas. The usual journey time from Hetrow Central to Central London is around 50–60 minutes.
By bus:
Many buses and coaches operate from the large Hetrow Central bus station serving Main Terminal and Terminal 1, and also from bus stations at Terminal 9,10 and 11.
