NationStates favorite water-sport except for swimming is here once again to announce sign-ups for the most-famous water-polo event in the multiverse, the return of the heralded Water Polo International Championships, celebrating its birthday for its third time of incarnation. Two-time defending champion, West Phoenicia is looking to become a threepeat and cement its legacy as one of the great hydropolo-ing nations of all time while new upstarts like Vekaiyu and the old guard like Kebec come running to upset and dethrone them. So, now, we'd like to welcome you to the newest running of the WPIC!

Please put all OOC/discussion questions and comments in this thread, sign-ups and host bids should be directed to this thread. As water polo is a rather small tournament, we encourage newer nations to bid to host, however, a bit of experience in scorinating and rping on NS Sports is required.

It is highly recommended you participate in the 8-team Baptism of Water, the precursor tourney to the WPIC itself, held to introduce newer nations to the game of water polo and build rp alongside giving them rankings entering the tournament. the Water Polo International Championships (and possible qualifying) will happen immediately after the BoW finishes.
To sign up, simply state you'll participate in the WPIC and the Baptism of Water.

Water Polo in the Equestrian States
The public perception of water polo in the Equestrian States can best be summarized as follows: "What the hay is water polo?" Though immensely popular among the seaponies and other sapient aquatic species which inhabit the coastal waters of the island nation as a stand-in for the Equestrian national sport of hoofball, the general Equestrian public knows little, if anything of the sport. However, this general ignorance of the sport has not deterred the Equestrian Water Polo Association from submitting a bid for both the Water Polo International Championship and the newly-formed Baptism of Water. The EWPA hopes that a successful and exciting couple of tournaments will provide the sport with a boost in popularity not unlike those experienced by baseball and gridiron after the Equestrian States hosted those sports' respective premier tournaments for the first time.

Resumé
The user behind the Equestrian States is one of NS Sports' more experienced hosts, having run multiple WCC events (most notably co-hosting the 67th and 70th World Cups) as well as numerous other lesser tournaments such as the Di Bradini Cup, World Bowl, World Baseball Classic, and World Cup of Hockey.

Format
Baptism of Water
With an 8 participant cap, the format for this tournament will be quite simple: two 4-team groups playing a single round robin group stage with the top two teams in each group advancing to the semifinals. The knockout stage will be single-elimination. This format will keep the tournament as short as possible so as to avoid much down time for those nations only participating in the WPIC.

Water Polo International Championships
Again, the tournament format will be rather simple with a single round robin group stage held in the Equestrian States. Though the exact number of participants is yet to be determined, my preference will be for 4-8 groups of an equal number of teams, with likely eight teams advancing to the knockout rounds. Should the number of participants reach or pass 24 teams, I would consider expanding the knockout rounds first to 12 teams and then to 16 if we do make it to 32 participating nations. Regardless of numbers, the knockout stage of the tournament will be a straightforward single-elimination bracket.

If chosen, I will use the latest version of xkoranate to generate scores. This bid will also use a cumulative and generous RP bonus, so as to encourage active RPing by all participants regardless of rank.
