Boys Scouts to start letting girls join

The Boy Scouts of America announced plans on Wednesday to broadly accept girls, marking a historic shift for the century-old organization and setting off a debate about where girls better learn how to be leaders.

I'm all for equality and all that good stuff. But this whole thing is just assinine. For cripes sake, the organization is called the BOY Scouts. I know girls can do everything guys can and all that, but certain things should still be boys only. Hell, girls have their own scout thing.

What OP said, we already have Girl Scouts. If girls want to do Boy Scout activities, have the Girl Scouts adapt those programs into their own organization instead of forcing the Boy Scouts to change.

Granted, girls wont be allowed to go camping with the boys (from what I heard), but even then, this is an organization for boys to turn into men, not hang around girls and focus on them rather than working on discipline.

As a currently active Assistant Scoutmaster, what makes this ridiculous is the Venture program already being there, co-ed scouting, ages 14-20. They do virtually everything the Boy Scouts do and more, and allow girls to join as well. Why not simple expand or promote that program? What is the point of accepting girls into the explicitly-named Boy Scouts when a program already exists, and is functionally quite well, that is co-ed?

To expand the Venture program to Cub Scout ages would be sensible if that is the goal here-but instead it's just been decided to put girls into the main program, if in segregated troops. Why? What's the purpose? It's ridiculous in light of the plainly apparent other options.

Get girls in Scouting-absolutely. But we already have a system for that, and that's what the focus should be on here.

I am ok with it. I will point out I am an Eagle Scout.

For one thing this is not full mix. It's more a trial run at the cub scout level. You can have girl dens, boys can decide to be no girl packs and girls can be in their own.

It does offer things.

1) Families with boys and girls can go to one Troop( even though its a Den)
2) Girls can do the boy scout stuff.

This is a wake up call to GSA. They have been getting rather lame (at least my way as my wife is involved). For example, you can get a camping badge without camping. A first aid badge without knowing able to use first aid. It's more about researching and talking to people about stuff rather then doing the stuff.

Girls want do things. They want to canoe, they want to camp, they want to know how to tie knots and use a pocket knife.....

I can see girls taking this up.

Maybe I had a bad troop. I mean - my troop leader was just a cocksucker, and my peers were kind of annoying. We never did go on any camping trips and whatnot, and that bummed me out, since I've always loved the outdoors.

Bruh, we go camping every month, go on hikes, and do random cool shit like camping on the Gettysburg battlefield (while going to Hershey Park the day after)

We never did knots, hardly ever did camps (and even then, they were nothing very special) and all of my peers there were regular old jockish types. I much preferred Navy Cadets when I was in that.

I fully support the fixing of the GSA, but doing this by reducing their numbers aint the answer.

It'd be like having two pools with one overflowing, but rather than draining the pool, you transfer the overflowing water into the other pool

As far as I understand, nobody is forcing the boy scouts to do this as nobody forced them to accept gay scouts. In the past courts have ruled the Boy Scouts aren't required to accept girls, but they are fully and well within their right to do so if they want.
