List of Religions & Cults (Sept. 14, 2017 — Nov. 17, 2023)

Postby Jutsa » Thu Sep 14, 2017 10:25 pm

Created this because... why not?

Religions and Cults:
Addison Cola Corporation: This is a corporation that tried to switch its legal status to a religion in order to avoid paying taxes in Issue #695: How To Succeed In Business Without Really Paying Taxes

Atheism: Some folks consider this a religion as "a belief that there is no God", while others argue it's not a religion for that very reason.
Either way, I'm not going to add a list to this as control+f-ing won't be enough, and that divide of opinion will hopefully be a further escape goat.

Barefoot Wanderers: a religion where people go bearfoot for fear of the Sock-Devil. Appears in issue #1238: No Shoes, No Service

Catholicism: Not much to say about this. Catholics are one of the few irl religions to be mentioned in NS, and are featured exclusively in early issues.
#001: Where's The Love Gone?
#039: Scandal Rocks @@NAME@@'s Government!
#128: Ban The Burka?

The Citizens’ Chapel Cultivation Concept: Specifically based on the Peoples Temple Agricultural Project, or "Jonestown", this cult is the main point of focus in issue #836: Don't Drink The Grape Punch, which is also specifically based on the massacre.

Church of @@NAME@@: Someone proposes banning all religions except for a new government-run Church of @@NAME@@ in issue #091: Sacramental Tax Time?
This religion no longer exists, and has been replaced with @@FAITH@@.

Conspiritivism: A small sect that wants representation in issue #775: Affirmative Election. May actually be a cult.

Cult of Cyan First appearing in #502: Scientists Declare That @@ANIMAL@@s Are Persons, they apparently are a cult so bizarre that Violetism looks straightforward. The interesting fact is that this also seems to be based off of irl religions.
It is established that a meal consumed by members is rice with saffron and pomegranate. They also hold a feast day called "Festivaqua", and is being pushed by its Grand Kahuna to be renamed to Cyantology.
#502: Scientists Declare That @@ANIMAL@@s Are Persons
#851: Commercial Tidings Well In Advance (Alt to Violetism)
#997: The Enemy Within: Not a Second Time
#1066: It’s an Honour Just to Be Condemned
#1361: Fundamental Rights
#1465: Parking Pandemonium

(The) Cult of the Dammed: Though not really a religious cult, in #951: The Wrath of the Fish King, a terrorist group known as the Cult of the Damned has threatened to kill all the fish if you don't let fishing industries work unregulated.

Cult of the Undead @@ANIMAL@@: In #143: An Archaeological Altercation, Yon-Zhauryg v'Klot claims you've unearthed an ancient temple that belongs to the Goddess "Firefury Amahira". It is believed that the Goddess demands a sacrifice... in hamsters.

Cult of... You? Someone obsessed with you offers to make you the God of your nation in #243: A Question Of Faith, and insists it's simply "love".
Cult of Divine Nationalism: Another cult honoring your glory, they wish you to proclaim divinity in your nation in Issue #363: The Apotheosis of @@LEADER@@?
Cult of Nationalist Divinity: A more zealous group to which wishes to persecute anyone who does not follow their ways, including the Cult of Divine Nationalism. They, too, appear in Issue #363, and in fact appear in the followup issue, #1124: Signing Off, Your God

Earth Divinities: Priestess of the Earth Divinities wants to ban prosthesis to encourage natural spiritual connection in issue #709: Armed And Legging It.

Faithology: Whilst you think it'd be a study of faith, it's most certainly another religion! That's about all I know about it, though it could be based on Scientology. Bonus video for Neurotology: Here.
#702: Has Your Room Been Booked?
#718: Roses Are Due If Violet's For You
#1231: Save Our Souls

The Flying Suns UFO cult: Probably a non-important cult, found in #648: Confessions Of A Dirty Mind

Frisbeetarianism: Surprisingly, this may have not been named named after Frisbeeteria, as there appears to be an actual
"Church of Frisbeetarianism", which makes sense as it appears next to Pastafarianism, which also seems to be a joke religion irl.
It's referenced as a major religion in its first appearance, but is considered a made-up joke religion in its second appearance.
#196: Violent Violetists Protest Artists
#1457: Use the Farce, @@LEADER@@

Fundamentalist Brotherhood: Also dubbed "the Brotherhood", appearing in #943: Big Love, Big Problems?, this is a highly devout polygamist believe system that's believed to have raised women to be marriage slaves. They believe Prophet Hezekiah Obadiah Zachariah @@RANDOMLASTNAME@@ was visited by Angel Cletus.

illegal organ harvesting cult: a smear campaign in issue #529: Attack of the Attack Ads. It doesn't exist, and is only used to degrade your opponent — or so we thought. #1153: Side Effects suggests that this could be referencing an actual cult, practiced by a drug company based in @@NAME@@.
#529: Attack of the Attack Ads
#1153: Side Effects

The Holy Order of St. Ilton: Residing in an ancient monastery in a remote part of @@NAME@@, they are famous for their Iltonian cheese loved around your nation. They face threat of totally disappearing in #1582: Our Feta Which Art in Havarti... due to low newcomers and aging monks, taking their cheese with them.

Jeday: A made-up religion (that may have a devout following) appearing on censuses in issue #1457: Use the Farce, @@LEADER@@.

Judaism: Like Christianity and Catholicism, Judaism only exists in the very early issues.
#022: Nazi Sympathizers Plan Rally
#128: Ban The Burka?

Mendesmetetics: Framed as "a dubious religious organization" in issue #873: Terrified Testimony!, Mendesmetetics might be a potentially life-threatening organization, although it could also be the unjust accusations of a defense attorney. It is based off of Dianetics.

Movementarianism: Based in the United Federation, a group of Movementarians are willing to purchase, for a large sum of money, some land in your nation. However, they are connected to mass-suicides, and are not wanted even in the United Federation for killing upwards of 600 people. This all occurs in issue #939: A Question of Bad Faith.

Neopeganism: While it might appear to be a simple neo + paganism, it appears, in issue #676: Down The Rabbit Hole, to be a belief followed by an escape mental patient who worships the Great Bunny Goddess by wearing a robe and bunny slippers while ingesting rabbit droppings to see images of the future. ... Yeah.

New Age: This is a free-spirituality movement that probably is more of a general trend and not an official religion, but is important in a few issue plotlines.
#006: Appointment Of Spiritual Advisor
#510: Possession, Protection Or Poppycock?
#1432: Oh Dear (mentioned as some sort of "religious leader")

Order of Divine Retribution: A religious organization featured in #1417: Nun on the Run, a member of which advocates for abolishing religious discrimination of all kinds for any job.

Order of Maxx: In issue #313: Conscientious Objectors Want You... To Let Them Abstain, a devout member of the Order of Maxx refuses to be conscripted on account of being part of a religion that supports peace and pacifism.
The Order of Maxx also holds Maxxmas(a play on Christmas). It is quite possibly the most peaceful religious organization in all of nationstates.
#313: Conscientious Objectors Want You... To Let Them Abstain
#721: A Lack Of Comma Sense [Maxx]
#848: It’s A Girl Thing [Maxxmas]
#851: Commercial Tidings Well In Advance [Maxxmas]
#943: Big Love, Big Problems? [Maxxmas]
#1296: Once Upon a Time [Maxxmas]
#1328: Not-So-Friendly Fire [Maxxmas]

Pastafarianism: Probably based off of the religion of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, this is supposedly a major religion, although it's rarely ever mentioned.
#196: Violent Violetists Protest Artists
#1231: Save Our Souls

Pizza Cult/Church of Pizza: It's a cult... that worships pizza... specifically "His Immaculate Munchiness", "His Holy Crustiness", and... er...
"the Holy Crustiness of Pizza Margherita". And ... yeah ... got no more to say about this one, aside from the fact that they apparently practice polygamy and hate fasting.
#298: Cults: Harmless or Heretics?
#619: X Marks The Cult?
#695: How To Succeed In Business Without Really Paying Taxes
#943: Big Love, Big Problems?
#1151 Gotta Go Fast
#1233: Get Real!

The Sisters of Saint Katherine’s Mercy: A religious organization featured in #1417: Nun on the Run, where a member is running for a vacant parliament seat.

The Society of Love: The main focus of #1131: Practise Safe Sects?, The Society of Love is a cult that ropes in young people and makes them devoted to their society for life. The name "Sunbeam" appears in several other issues, including #1332: We Won’t, We Won’t Rock You, where the "Almighty Agate" is mentioned.

Violetism: Formally known as the "Order of Violet" or the "Curch of Violet", Violetism is a strict and orderly religion which seems to believe in an all-mighty "Violet" God. It is known for having a good deal of extremists, from pressuring their views on others to demanding ritual sacrifice. A frequent issue is whether they should be suppressed for violence or welcome to society as an accepted minority.
Violet is actually referenced a lot in NationStates, quite possibly because of the user [Violet] and the book Jennifer Government. The list in the spoiler only contains mentions of Violetism itself, or Violet the goddess, or the sects/rivals of Violetism.
In issue 58, violent Violetists demand sacrifice.
In Issue 440, a movie is named "A Clockwork Violet".
In Issue 631, in reference to their sacrificial beliefs and/or Violet being a God and/or spiritual realm, death row is also known as "The Violet Mile". As it turns out, it's based on the name of an irl movie, "The Green Mile", which is also about death row.
Violet: Violet is most likely the Violetists' version of God. However, if she's mentioned, it's almost always in a non-religious manor, such as in the saying "For the love of Violet!" Violet is also used in the phrase "tax the Violet out of them!" in issues 439 and 466.
Ultra-Violet: This is an especially dangerous Violetist group, possibly the ones demanding sacrifice. They are so extremist that they resort to terrorism.
They seem to mostly come from Tasmania and Lilliputia.
Shrinking Violet: liberal branch of Violetism.
Trivia: In issue 334, someone paints his/her car violet. Issue #644 also has the Violet Hat Society, which is just full of peaceful retirees. In issue 791, Barry Maxman's poodle is named Violet.
Trivia: Violet is also the site admin. It's possible that she is "Violet" herself. She is mentioned in issue #430.
Trivia: Violet sometimes replaces "grey", such as in "15 Shades of Violet" in 472 or "Earl Violet tea" in 589.
Trivia: Violetism is considered a "new weird religious cult" in its first appearance, issue #058.
Trivia: Violetine’s Day is evidently a holiday, according to #1079: [i]What’s Love Got to Do With It?. Could it have Violetist origins?
#058: Violent Violetists Demand Blood
#196: Violent Violetists Protest Artists

#1538: The Passion of Chris

Vive la chèvre: In issue #507: Would A Rochebaron By Any Other Name Smell Just As Sweet?, this new religion has been created to protest the government's ban on dairy products by worshipping cheese.

Church of Weird Gaits: This is a very strange religion, worshipping "The Great Lumberer", or simply "The Lumberer". A minister believes that man was never meant to be one with machine in issue #626: Carbon Copied (and can I just say what a strange issue it is).

Yellowism: The Tranquility of Yellow is a religious group that appears different on various occasions, sometimes being more whimsical and having commercial leanings, while other times being almost the exact same as the Order of Violet, and even go as far as to worship a different God in different issues, making it the least consistent religion in NS. One possible explanation is that, unlike Violetism, there are many different sects and branches of it that all go by the same name, and that they are polytheistic, although this is far from canon. Followers of Yellow are called "(Tranquil) Yellowites", and they celebrate the "Holy Month of the Golden Bloom" by fasting. It is unclear if they fast for the entire month or not, though they only fast from dusk til dawn, so they probably feast at night.
Note: Several issue appearances of Yellow are for nations that have banned Violetism. Said issues will have (ALT) put next to them.
#456: Heads Will Roll (ALT)

@@DEMONYMADJECTIVE@@ Unorthodox Church: Probably based off of the irl Orthodox church, someone from this religion testifies that creating meat is wrong in #123: Now, Vat's Food For Thought.

@@NAME@@ First Omnimenical Church: Nothing is known about this, except for the fact that someone in it advocates for homeschooling to teach children their own values in Issue #064: Put The "Board" Back In Board Of Education.

@@RELIGION@@ or @@FAITH@@: Whatever your national religion is. You unlock this with #243: A Question Of Faith.

Unnamed Religions:

In issue #333, an immigrant priest mentions that it's a custom for the under-fire religion to dance blindfolded around cucumbers while carrying wailing children on their heads.

In issue #695, a priest of an unknown religion is called in to counter Addison Cola Corporation's claim to religious status.
In issue #702, there's a parody religious text called Scrivenings of the Soaring Squash, although there's no mention of a tied parody religion.
In issue #728, there's a reverend of a religion you've never even heard about complaining to you.
There also seems to be "The (Great) Creator", which may or may not be a reference to God, particularly given its seemingly monotheistic occurrences, though nothing is confirmed on this.
In issue #991, "the Great Callipygian One" is mentioned, although it is unknown what religion this belongs to.
In issue #1128, Santa is considered a religious figure in option 4, along with "Caga Tio" and "the Soul Cake Duck". Dunno what those are? Go google them.
In issue #1206, someone named the Priestess of the Wet God rambles on about dirty water being a gift from His Watery Glory.
In issue #1214, someone rambles about how pricking gay people will make you gay or something.

Issue #1422's second speaker is your Minister of Religious Affairs, fiddling with prayer beads and hoping you name the ship after a religious deity.

Issue #1481 features a church, but no details are given.
Issue #1483 features a cultural / religious tradition of what's considered (by option 2's speaker) to be FGM (An Adult Topic)

Implied Occurances:
God is referenced in options #029*, #033, #038, #042, #050*, #077, #078, #082, #107, #132, #136, #207*, #209*, #218, #238, #249, #264, #279, #309*, #383*, #440*, #463*, #474, 528*, #574*, #585*.
#028: Cancer Sufferer Demands Euthanasia Bill - The third speaker is a bishop and refers to God frequently, implying Christianity.
#128: Ban The Burka? - Burkas are traditionally worn my muslims, so the title pretty much suggests that. (also, muslim isn't even considered a word in NS spellcheck.)
#172: Church Attendances Reaching New Low, Warn Priests - Full of things, including: Netherworld, God, The Hierophant; Church, Swami, Meditation, Temples, Mosques, Hermitages
#183: Buy A Better Baby? - The second speaker mentions God and waves a crucifix - almost certainly Christian.
#191: Blood Banks Running Dry - The religious speaker is almost certainly a jahova's witness.
#196: Violent Violetists Protest Artists - Someone wants to enforce a specific religion onto all of your nation. It's near certainly one of the testament religions.
#219: Nobody Expects The @@NAME@@ Inquisition! - The religion involved is most likely a testament religion.
#245: Clash Of Cultures - "Winter Day" is proposed as a secular name for a holiday, almost certainly Christmas.
#361: @@CAPITAL@@, We Have A Problem - Features a reverend referencing the Tower of Babel.
#381: Mamma @@NAME@@, Let Me Go - Features Beelzebub, which is mentioned in the song this issue references.
#467: Saving Your Own Foreskin - The speaker in option 2, while not confirmed, is strongly implied to be Jewish.
#504: Short Shorts Too Short? - A preacher wants all women covered "up from their wrist to their ankle"
#548: Appointment Of A Science Advisor - A fundamentalist preacher wants you to stop science in fear of eternal damnation. They may be protestant, although no such religion is mentioned elsewhere in NS, so it's uncertain.
#582: Augmented Reality Check - a highly religious person who appears to be of a testament religion(or something reasonably similar to one) claims that Maxémon are blasphemies.
#624: A Role To Play - The second speaker wears a "Jesus Saves and Takes Half Damage" shirt.
#648: Confessions Of A Dirty Mind - a criminal confessed crimes to what's probably a Christian priest.
#703: Divine Decoration - Option 1 and its effect line give a strong impression of Christianity.
#786: Tainted Tattoos - While the religious speaker is not named, the option is not available if your nation has no national religion, so the speaker's most likely a follower of @@FAITH@@.
#825: Bugging Out On Beef - The religious speaker in the religious variant of the final option may be part of the Tranquility of Yellow, sporting yellow robes and pro-vegetarianism.
#857: Are You There God Particle? It’s Me, @@LEADER@@ - One of the speakers, @@RANDOMFIRSTNAME@@ Newton, seems to reference God with "His" and "The Lord".
#897: The Devil’s Playground - the Devil and Lucifer are both in this issue - a high indication of testament religion
#979: A Patronising Statement - mentions Beelzebub.
#1120: Following Yonder Star - Three kingdoms' kings are fond of astrology and come to your nation to seek a new king. (Christianity playoff).
#1124: Signing Off, Your God - Features a cultist.

Reverends, preachers, and priests are also fairly frequent appearances, and usually seem to lean more towards testament ideology.

Fun fact!: Both Christmas (in an easter egg) and Maxxmas(probably a religious holiday for the Order of Maxx) exist as holidays. Santa exists in effect lines of three non-easter egg issues, and is the main focus of #1128: Get Thee Behind Me, Santa

Caught up to Issue: #1623, except for 1570 which was missing at the time of update.

I wouldn't really distinguish between "religions" and "cults". It's just words. People can call any religion they dislike a cult. If they're calling themselves a cult, then, well... it's really not more meaningful than whether they're calling themselves an Order or a Tranquility.

Jutsa wrote:Violet: Violet is often times mentioned in issues without Violetism being at all involved. Violet is most likely the Violetists' version of God. A common saying is "For the love of Violet!"
Most people saying things like that and "for Violet's sake!" are probably taking Violet's name in vain, and aren't actually believers in Violetism. In fact, they're probably not very religious at all.

Jutsa wrote:However, Violet it is also used to reference the underworld in issues 439 and 466, which might shine light as to while Violetists tend to be as aggressive as they are.
These two issues use the phrase "tax the Violet out of [them]", which should probably be read as analogous to "tax the hell out of them", etc.

Which I guess is what you meant (hell = underworld), though I note that (A) it should not be confused with the more mundane "criminal underworld", and (B) these are obviously irreverent statements not intended to reflect a serious belief in how hell works (I do not believe Christian canon supports the notion that it is something which can be taxed out of people). I'm not sure why that phrase even exists, other than people liking to insert random shocking stuff into their sentences for the sake of it (which really explains both cases of "Violet" replacing "God" and it replacing "hell"). People will readily use various other silly words there instead of "hell", so I don't think it should be taken to literally mean "Violet" = "underworld".

Jutsa wrote:Tranquility of Yellow: The Tranquility of Yellow is a religious group that's essentially the same as the Order of Violet, including the amount of hate that they have over the other.
Weirdly, in #619, the Yellowists acually appear significantly more reasonable than the Violetists, and also seems to have commercial leanings, along with some more unusual beliefs:
2. "Those scrolls are nothing but mistranslated hogwash! All of this area belongs to us!" asserts Her Jaundiceness, the eccentric and indecisive leader of the Tranquility of Yellow. "Those idiotic Violetists and believers in @@FAITH@@ only care about the majority of people in @@NAME@@. What about the minority, the ones that believe invisible dragons fly around, and that everyone should pay for, uh, make a personal sacrifice to the great Advertising Billboard? We would freely allow all of them to come in and listen to our completely objective teachings. Now as for the majority... they'll just be banned from coming. What, you thought we would KILL them? We're not that crazy..."
Their original appearance, #598, makes them out to be worse and mentions a relationship to Violetism, but still gives the impression they must have serious disagreements over some things:
3. "That doesn't go far enough," claims the leader of The Tranquility of Yellow, an ancient religion that has a just as ancient feud with Violetism. "These heretics have been a danger ever since the Grand Schism, and they must be dealt with accordingly. I suggest we start up an inquisition. My people will find these Violetists, and see if they can be converted to our true religion or renounce their faith. Whichever one the government prefers. We're not picky. If not... the stake. BURN THEM ALL! Or hang them. Just get rid of those creepy Violetists, okay?"
#456 was later retconned to include Yellowists which are completely identical to Violetists in every way that matters, down to fashion sense and using a "ceremonial blade" (presumably for human sacrifice, considering the context and similarity to Violetism), but I hated that.

Jutsa wrote:Trivia: Violet sometimes replaces "grey", such as in "15 Shades of Violet" in 472 or "Earl Violet tea" in 589.
Violet can also replace other colors, such as green (#631).

Jutsa wrote:Cult of Cyan Appearing in #502: Scientists Declare That @@ANIMAL@@s Are Persons, they apparently are a cult so bizarre that Violetism looks straightforward.
The most amusing thing about the Cyanists is that their main defined belief is, in fact, suspiciously familiar from Judaism/Christianity:
#502 wrote:"So what if @@ANIMALPLURAL@@ are intelligent? Were they given dominion over the earth and all its inhabitants? No, those things were given to us, humanity. These animals are here to cater to our basic needs, like eating, carrying heavy loads, or teaching them how to juggle and selling them to the circus."
Compare:
Genesis 1:26-28 wrote:And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
I think the joke with the Cult of Cyan is the tenets of a major real-life religion (or two or three) being treated as "obscure" in the world of the game.

Jutsa wrote:Cult of the Undead @@ANIMAL@@: In #143: An Archaeological Altercation, Yon-Zhauryg v'Klot claims you've unearthed an ancient temple that belongs to the Goddess "Firefury Amahira".
This goddess apparently demands the sacrifice of hamsters, judging by the effect line: "archaeological discoveries are often followed by mysterious hamster abductions".

#091 features a "Church of @@NAME@@", which you can found as a racket to earn donations, but is not specifically stated to involve @@LEADER@@-worship.

#196 mentions religions called "Pastafarianism" and "Frisbeetarianism" (the former is a real-life parody religion, but treated as though it is a serious one in-universe, while the latter is named after a NationStates moderator) and asserts they are "major religions", even though we never hear of them again. (NationStates has its own in-universe parody religion, but its name is not known, only that its holy text is called "Scrivenings of the Soaring Squash").

#313 features an "Order of Maxx", apparently significantly more benevolent than the Order of Violet despite its similar inspiration, as it supports conscientious objection to military conscription.

#381 doesn't name a religion, but apparently believes that a devil named "Beelzebub" is among those who punish sinners in the afterlife.

#505 introduces "Vive la chèvre" (capitalized like that?), a "newly-founded religious group" which worships cheese or something. It only appears in nations that have outlawed cheese, so they may have a martyr complex.

#676 mentions neopaganism, which is more of a category than a religion but at least resembles a name.

#702 mentions "Faithology", probably a parody of Scientology, although little is explicitly said about it.

Many issues contain unnamed religions, but I quickly decided it's futile to list them all, especially if you count any mention of "holy" or "sacred" that doesn't explain what it's holy to. Although #451 option 4's effect line, "books are so highly regarded in @@NAME@@ that libraries are often revered as holy shrines", deserves special mention.

Also, #070 and #196 contain an organization called "@@NAME@@'s Concerned Citizens for Our God", most likely not actually a religion in itself (think "Salvation Army" or something). From context it is probably a @@FAITH@@-based organization, though the issue was written before that macro existed.

@@FAITH@@ itself can be quite inconsistent, since in #285 it supports a Judeo-Christian creation story (does Islam also explicitly say the seven-days thing?), while in #284 it supports hallucinogenic drug use. Wow. Those are only one issue apart. And it's the last option in #284 and the first option in #285, so they're right next to each other in the spoiler thread.

Some issues have implied religions. #467 has a character that is very clearly implied to be Jewish, but (due to being written after using real-life religions started being discouraged) doesn't mention it by name. #128 implies people wearing burkas for religious reasons, heavily implied to be Muslims, but not mentioning it by name (even though this issue does mention Jews and Catholics). #549 features a character who has a Christian-sounding title ("Archbishop") but appears to practice a crude interpretation of Ramadan. Though in general, nameless religions resemble atheists' perception of Christianity more often than not.

A religion is something that people at the top actually believe. That's how it differs from a cult. A religion is something that works to the benefit of the higher being (yes, there are corrupt people in some religions, but ultimately, it works to the benefit of the higher being). A cult works to the benefit of those at the top

Interesting definition.

I'd say a cult is simply an organisation dedicated towards the veneration of a particular person, object or precept, whereas a religion is a set of beliefs relating to explanation of fundamental questions, and the organisational structure surrounding that. The two can overlap, and whether people at the top believe or not is entirely unrelated to those definitions.

Etymologically cult comes from Latin "cultus", to care, and Cicero defined "religio" as "cultus deorum", the care of Gods. That in mind, the original usage would have been religion being a subset of cults. Of course, that's not true of modern usage.

Hmm. Okay, so broadly speaking there is a really fine and incredibly blurry line between religions and cults, and a bunch of subdivisions.

Firstly, you've got religions - which you can broadly split into 3 categories. Churches, sects and denominations. Churches tend to be bigger, established and claim an exclusive monopoly on worship. They'll have things like a built in hierarchy (usually), established traditions and subdivisions (monks, nuns, priests etc) responsible for various different things within the church. In historical and current examples of churches, you've also got a really strong link to the state - and in some cases no real division between the two.

A denomination is (broadly speaking) a sub-division of a church. The lines between it and the original church are blurred, and while there's likely to be some differences between different denominations, they broadly "get along" with each other and the church.

Sects are (as the name implies) splinter groups off from the original church. They tend to replicate - or at least attempt to replicate - a lot of what the church they split from does, but remain very much at odds with the original church. They're often new religious movements trying to establish themselves as churches, often called heretics and apostates. They either peter out, turn into a denomination or simply get absorbed by another denomination or church.

Cults and sects are similar in some ways. The main difference is that a sect springs from a splintering with a denomination or church. A cult starts anew. There's several different types of cult. Some reject the outside world, whereas others embrace it - usually seeking to change it in some way. There's almost always a charismatic leader of some kind and a sense of the divine - either a vague spirituality or a set doctrine of beliefs. Often cults will have some aspect of an established religion, but as noted there's no definitive splintering from an existing church or denomination - it's a new way of doing things. Cults, like sects, can eventually become denominations, or be absorbed by existing ones as they grow and expand. They can also often just "end". Sometimes violently.

So with that in mind:

Churches

Catholicism

Judaism

Christianity (Note there's specific examples of Catholicism being a church in its own right - at least in RL)

Violetism

@@RELIGION@@

Cult of You - if you actually follow through and establish this, then it's going to become a church.

Denominations

(Very technically) Addison Cola Corporation

Church of Weird Gaits (and the great lumberer) - it has ministers, we can possibly assume that it's an established religion.

Sects

Tranquility of Yellow

Ultra-Violetism (It appears that Violetism doesn't tolerate much deviation from its central tenets)

Cults

Conspiritivism - referred to as a sect, but on limited evidence we have seems more of a cult.

Cult of Cyan (referenced as a cult and there's nothing to suggest it was formed from a split from Violetism)

Cult of Pizza (I cannot begin to imagine this as a sect - what denomination would it have broken away from?)

Cult of the Undead @@ANIMAL@@

The Flying Suns UFO cult

How are these denominations? What is their main religion?

Jewish (or some of the more devout Christian sects), not Islamic. I don't know if Islam features the seven-day creation story, but I know that they don't take their day of rest as seriously as Jews (some Muslim nations keep working on Friday, even, just extending lunch break by an hour or so to give time for the necessary prayers).

Jutsa wrote:In issue #648, a priest is mentioned, but it's not known what religion the priest belongs to.
It's about confessing to a priest to be forgiven for your sins, a very Christian notion (specifically Catholic? I'm not sure).

Jutsa wrote:In issue #665, a group of religious fanatics attack a bone museum. The self-declared defender of faith tries to convince you to turn them into museums teaching the "Holy Truth".
#655, not #665. It's about being anti-evolution.

Specifically a Jehovah's Witness, since I don't think other Christian denominations/sects/cults/whateveryouwanttocallthem make a big deal out of this.

A couple more that feature a familiar creation story:
#200: Adam and Eve
#495: Adele and Steve (implied to be believed in by some religion, but the speaker is anti-religion, so it's possible he's misremembering something he never cared to study properly)

I'm not sure I agree. I would say there isn't a distinct difference, but that cults are more likely to support very cruel or strange things such as human sacrifice. They are also usually paramilitary. Your definition is correct in practice.

Good work on the list, Jutsa. It'll be very useful. I know I'll refer to it.

I've always imagined Faithology as a cultish sect.

Trotterdam wrote:#702 mentions "Faithology", probably a parody of Scientology, although little is explicitly said about it.

On advise of my lawyers, I affirm that I have never heard of Scientology. Faithology is based on the Church of Neurotology, who may be seen in action on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOpapeX6Vzs. ;)

It's just a SNL video (on the subject stated, BTW). I'm not trying to convert you to some sinister secret society.

There are two references to Faithology and Faithologists (the practitioners of Faithology). The second is: #718

I found a very subtle Christianity reference in a late issue:
#703 Divine Decoration

1. "This demonstration ended horribly, but it brings up an important point," muses @@RANDOMNAME@@, popular secular personality and author of God May Love You, But Everyone Else Thinks You Suck. (The funny thing is, something similar to this actually happens. Some Israeli schoolbooks use a modified plus sign to avoid displaying crosses.)

As far as I know it's always been Firefury. I definitely remember the Cult of the Undead @@ANIMAL@@ going a long way back.

There hadn't been a lot of Violetists yet at the time of #143, then being represented only in one issue (#058). At the time we couldn't have known that Violetists would catch on and spread while the Cult of the Undead @@ANIMAL@@ would languish into obscurity. This was a time when authors probably still preferred coming up with their own religions instead of reusing existing ones that came closest to what they were trying to do.

Being canonized in #243 appears to have helped Violetism's popularity. Since that's one of the game's meta issues tied to a core game feature (the national religion field), its appearance there may have felt more meaningful than in any random one-off issue.

Violetism has been heavily overused lately, sometimes even to present fairly mainstream religious positions, instead of the murderous lunatics they started out as.

For the unnamed religions column, #582 has one known for forbidding depiction of their "archangel", in addition to more generic religious stuff like complaining about "evolution". (This sounds vaguely reminiscent of Muslims forbidding depictions of their prophet, and Jews banning depictions of God, but is obviously not the same thing.)
