Days Gone By (Zombie Survival|Mature|OOC|Dead)

It's hard to fathom just how fragile the natural order of things is. You kill a deer, a pack of wolves goes hungry, and then the rodents blossom out of control, then the bees all die, and humans are left without crops in that area. The analogy is probably wrong in some aspects but I don't give damn. We're all dying anyway. As you probably know, or not if you're younger, too young for this planet, the world went to shit because of some fucking crazy Adenovirus. Some random ass corporation did some surveying in Northern Ethiopia, apparently they found a massive cavern that had an abundance of riches, most people thought they found the ark of the covenant as well but it was quickly debunked as just the tomb of a real old king. And then the stupid fucks started digging deeper.

They found something else, like they always do. They struck oil, and they planted a big fuck off drill right on top of it. And while they were sitting pretty harvesting a new oil well, Ethiopia started getting more attention, and the price of oil went down a bit.

Then people started getting sick, first those who worked near the site, then their families, then the chain kept going. WHO deemed it a low risk pandemic at first, simply flu like symptoms, and no real fatalities. Then they started getting concerned when symptoms started exhibiting signs of rabies. People would just go mad, beat the shit out of someone, then just collapse, paralyzed. WHO started working on a cure, but things kept escalating. Within a month of that goddamn drill operation a good chunk of Africa was under UN occupation in an effort to slow the spread down, but it was already much too late. At that point there were cases in every corner of the planet. WHO started doing autopsies on the corpses and they got real spooked, DNA started getting fucked up, cancerous growths were notably present and they started showing some other fucked up changes in random sections of their genome.

The biggest worry was the fact that they weren't fucking dying like they should. They would tank, ten, twenty, sometimes up to fifty rounds to the chest from basic small arms. Even crawling after they were cut in fucking half. WHO tanked soon after they released their findings from the autopsies, stating that certain factors were a part of viral immunity but the world went dark before they could get that out in the open. After spending some time digging up my own answers it's got something to do with meningitis, or neurodevelopmental disorders, but obviously I have a very limited stock to test from, AKA none at fucking all.

All we know is that you can't get their fluids in you. Blood in the eyes? fucked. Mouth? if you swallow that shit you're fucked. Only saving grace is to wash your mouth out with alcohol. 90% of the time it's a death sentence when you do swallow it, or get it into your bloodstream or whatever the fuck, the other 10% you either become a crippled mess as the virus takes partial hold and fucks up your genome to make you a mutilated asymptomatic carrier, or you end up perfectly fine, only to be shot in the fucking face for fears of being infected. Only way to put those zombie bastards down in a reasonable amount of time is -you guessed it- repainting a wall with their brainpan.

I've been trying three goddamn months alone to make headway in this goddamn lab and it all comes crashing down because I gripped a test tube too fucking tightly. Shard of glass punctured my hazmat suit, and now I'm infected. I can already feel the growths sprouting from my fucking back. Hopefully that just means I'm asymptomatic. I'm gonna keep working on here, see if I can get anymore data. If you stumble upon this journal, chances are I brained myself on the corner of a desk by accident or I shot myself because I'm fully infected. Data's hopefully in the computer behind my desk on level 3 if there's still power.

Whatever god, spirit, afterlife you beleive in, I hope they're watching over you, Good Luck. Try to take Earth back.

And if you find whoever named it the fucking East Nile Virus, I want you to beat them to death for me. Thanks.

-Doctor Laura Twickham's Journal, Day 128
BSL-4 Lab Supervisor, National Microbiology Laboratory
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

It has been 137 days since the world became afflicted by a virus hiding in a sealed off cave for thousands of years. Dubbed the East Nile Virus, the malady is blood-borne and very, very, infectious. Resulting in a number of mutations and symptoms driving those infected into a murderous rage against those uninfected, and driving infectees to commit cannibalism to survive, in essence, the virus is responsible for a world wide zombie outbreak.. 98% of all encounters with the virus will result in infection, while 4% of those numbers remain asymptomatic to a degree. The remaining two are those wholly immune to the virus, immunity is, at this time, seemingly random though patterns indicate that those with some form of abnormal affliction to neural tissues are much more resistant to infection.

While those in the third world and in densely populated nations are largely without hope, those within the Americas and remote pockets of Europe fight on.

You are a member of one of those groups. As a number of people waiting for a light of hope to beam onto them, for a one way trip to California or Vancouver Island the Rochester Int'l Evac Zone in upstate New York gets more and more crowded, gunshots more and more frequent, and the joint forces of Canadian and American soldiers grow more and more concerned.

And brother, it's starting to snow.

0. The rulings of OP and Co-OPs are final.
1. Basic RPing etiquette applies here, no metagaming, no godmodding, generally nothing that isn't acceptable on site.
2. Don't be a knobhead. RP your characters however you want, just keep such behavious in the IC.
3. Treat your posts like a CV, proper grammar and spelling are expected, and don't plaster it with italics and technicolor words, it's an eyesore and a possible health hazard.
4. OP reserves the right to kill your characters. You reserve the right not to complain about it.
5. Have fun!
• No more than 4 active military characters. (Currently at 3)
• Former Military Characters are now Closed.
• No more than 5 Law Enforcement Officers. (Currently at 2)
• Weapons will only be permitted if the state your character originates from requires permits. No permit, no gun.
• Delete all in parenthesis.

Personal Belongings: (What they have on their person. This means in their pockets/in their backpack/messenger bag, not the Kar98 they have in their father's safe down in Georgia. This is a list of facts and hearsay found and heard about the infected, ranging from the minute to the obvious, these will potentially save your characters life... or end it, depending on how reliable said info is. A question mark is a fact that is an educated assumption based on other facts. A red fact is one that is simply hearsay, and shouldn't be trusted until it is tested thoroughly.

As the RP progresses, this list will be updated based upon character observations and notes found from other survivors. Both your own assumptions as well as the knowledge from survivors can be wrong, so make sure.

• Infected do not sleep(?)
• The Virus is transmitted through bodily fluids.
• The Virus is not airborne.
• The Virus is not waterborne(?)
• Symptoms of the virus first appear within 4-6 minutes after exposure.
• The virus is transmissible through insects(?)
• Amputation can slow or stop infection.
• Those with neurodevelopmental disorders are immune.
• Infected fluids become gelatinized upon contact with atmospheric oxygen.
• Infected do not feel pain.
• Infected are effectively blind(?)
• Infected cannot bleed to death(?)
• Infected do not require higher brain functions to live.
As one can expect, the group will have to be mobile. The most sought after safe haven lies on the West coast of North America, beyond the shield of the Rockies or on the Vancouver Island haven in Canada, both roughly 2200 miles away. But those locations are not the only safe locations one can escape to. The journey will not be easy, and environmental hazards, fellow survivors, wildlife, and of course the infected will make it all the more harder. This is where the roadmap comes in. After the prologue, characters will come together ICly to figure out where to go from there, all the way until safe haven, or death. Below will be a list of the cities the group has visited, as well as the locations within those cities.

• Rochester New York, United States
• Rochester Int'l Airport.

This is your new family. Those who have been folded into your group of survivors for better or worse. All have their stories, their skills, and their weaknesses, but above all else, all are alive. Keep it that way.

Despite civilization ending, life still goes on. Bacteria, viruses, parasites, and general dirt haven't disappeared, nor have animals or physical conditions. Drinking unpurified water is a gamble, as is uncooked meat. General hygiene will also play a factor, after all, the last thing you want is an abscessed tooth or an ingrown toenail in the apocalypse. From something as small as a cold, to grave as a infected stump of a limb, it will be listed here, followed by a estimated duration of how long the affliction will last (for better or worse).

The average man requires 2500 calories to maintain a healthy weight, while the average woman requires 2000. The average human can only carry 28 extra kilograms on their person before being unnecessarily encumbered. The average can of beans weighs 0.4 Kilograms and contains 200 calories.

In order to survive the group needs to work together, group supplies and ration food to ensure that those who need it the most get it, distributing the load will also need to be practiced. But the greed of the human condition can never fully fade, humanity has a built in wiring to ensure they have a survival plan, and this is where things break groups apart. If you so happen to keep an item away from the others, it goes into your personal stash, AKA the list in your character's application (which will need to be updated). This item is effectively yours until you use it, however, if it's discovered you have it, reactions could vary, depending on who discovers it, and what the item is, could mean the difference between an understanding nod or exile. Luxury items like a candy bar or a small tin of mints will likely get you off with a shake of the head, while a full MRE or a bottle of anti-biotics will get a much more aggressive reaction.

That being said, what is below is the list of supplies that the group possesses, from ammunition, to food, to medicine, to compasses and the like. While I am trusting you with being reasonable about what you find, keep in mind that I will be finding ways of balancing good finds out if you just so happen to grab something of a high value. I would also like to point out that vehicles and animals will also greatly improve the group's capacity to carry supplies.

As expected, looting is one of the best and easiest ways to obtain what you need to survive in the apocalypse. As such, one needs to know the workings of what goes where, what works with what, and what kind of ammo goes into your gun.

Name: Darryl Ender
Gender: Male
Age: 65
Description: Greying black hair, 6'2, short beard, grey eyes, worn out face
Occupation: Grocery bagger (Formerly), United States Marine Corps (Retired), Volunteer Firefighter (Formerly), Taxi Driver (Formerly) Construction Worker (Retired).
Carry Weight: 16.5 Kilograms (Carrying 5.5kg)
Strengths: Smart: He's been around for a while, done all sorts of jobs, picked up all sorts of things.
Adaptive: Can adjust to most situations quickly, figuring out solutions others would overlook.
Weaknesses: Older: The years have not been kind to him, he isn't in peak physical shape.
Personal Belongings: Red flannel shirt, brown carheart jacket, blue jeans, three pairs of socks and underwear, and a camouflage ball cap with a Bronco's logo on it. Pocket knife, M1911 and one box of .45 ammo (23/30 rounds), surplus USMC rucksack, a box of frosty flakes cereal, three chains of beans, one can of beefaroni, water canteen, 6 fiber one bars, and a set of plastic utensils.
Biography: Darryl was born in 1951 into a nuclear family in Virginia. In 1969 he was drafted into the United States Marine Corps at the age of 18. He served for four years, deciding to sign a two year reenlistment for the health benefits and money incentives. During his time in the Corps in Vietnam he was exposed to Agent Orange, but was persuaded that it was harmless. He would end active service in 1974, and marry his old high school sweetheart, Jenny Bearheart while bouncing around many jobs. They would have a son years later, George, but Jenny would die in childbirth due to unknown complications. Darryl was devastated, and would have to love with his parents for years while he raised his son. When he was able to cope with the loss and support himself and George, who was now three, he moved out to Vermont to pursue a construction job.

He would raise George until they turned 18 and went to college to study engineering. In George's senior year he married his girlfriend who he had since his freshman year, and years later they would have a child of their own, Johnathan, Darryl's grandson. At this time Darryl was also a volunteer firefighter, and had made many friends in his rural community. Nearly a decade later, his son and stepdaughter would visit Hawaii, leaving Darryl to look after Johnathan. They would never come back, dying on a boat tour where their tour ship would sink before help could arrive.

Again, Darryl was thrown into a depression, but yet again he pulled through only to raise his only family left. He would get a lot of help from distant family and the community. When word of a strange infection was spreading around his community started he immediately rushed to the nearest evacuation area, Rochester International. He would bring only the necessities, food, drink, and one of his pistols (leaving all his other weapons locked away in his gun safe in his basement). He and his grandson now await to get evacuated, but years of experience tell him that something bad is about to happen.

Name: Johnathan Ender
Gender: Male
Age: 15
Description: 5'9, brown hair, blue eyes,
Occupation: Student
Carry Weight: 27.5 kg (Carrying 7.1kg)
Strengths: Athletic: Years of training for track and cross country have made him strong for his age, meaning he can run faster and carry more.
Weaknesses: Young: He's only a kid, he doesn't have a grasp on how the world works yet, and the world's falling apart.
Personal Belongings: Long sleeve turtle neck, brown jacket, blue jeans, extra pair of socks and underwear, and a change of clothes (White t-shirt, another pair of blue jeans, and a green long sleeve button up shirt). Hunting knife, a bag of venison jerky, water bottle, a box of breakfast bars, four cans of vegetables, and half of a 6 pack of coke.
Biography: Born in 2002, Johnathan grew up a normal life. He was an only child, living with his parents, George and Ashley Ender. In 2011, when he was 9, his parents would go on a vacation, leaving him to be babysitted by his grandfather. His parents would never return, his grandfather not telling him the truth until years later. Ever since then he has lived with his grandfather, building a tight relationship with him. John has continued school, participating in multiple sports and getting good grades. It wasn't until recently when his grandfather usurped their lives, traveling to Rochester in response to the disturbing nightly news reports.

Biography:
Bethany Nash was born in Buffalo, New York, the daughter of a computer technician and a schoolteacher. Deaf, the girl would face some difficulties in the first few years of her life, but the disability was only a minor complication to an otherwise normal childhood. At age seven, the girl's father and pregnant mother would be killed in a traffic accident (a truck failed to stop at an intersection), and in a single moment her life would be turned upside down. Bethany would be sent to live with her next-of-kin in Upstate New York, William Townley, an estranged uncle whom she had never met before now. A veteran of the Gulf War, Uncle Will could best be described as an avid hunter, an unabashed Republican, and/or a hick with racist opinions. Stern, but he was kind enough to Bethany, and the two would later develop an abrasive yet amiable uncle/niece relationship.

Life in the backwoods was completely unlike what Bethany was accustomed to, but she made do, being too hardheaded to do anything else but thrive despite the circumstances surrounding her. Bullies were quick to target the deaf kid which led to many fights and afternoon detentions (which subsequently led to the girl befriending her would-be tormentors, thus graduating from "bullied" to "bully"), whereas the teachers were oftentimes oblivious on how best to educate a hearing impaired student. At home Bethany would help her uncle with various chores, eventually learning how to shoot (small caliber hunting rifles mostly) and how to fix simple mechanical/automobile problems, but also would acquire some of his less charming viewpoints as time wore on though to a lesser extent. The teenaged Bethany would be a native of the New York backcountry, not quite a hick or redneck but close enough to fall into such generalizations.

Bethany was working at a local gas station when the East Nile Virus emerged as a global threat. Living in the countryside, she and her uncle were unconcerned at first, but as the situation deteriorated the two made plans to survive the collapse of the United States (Uncle Will had previously entertained the thought but now had sincere reason to do so). Regardless, the illness would be slow in traversing the divide between urbanized city to rural backwoods. Or so they had thought. A man fleeing Syracuse stumbled into town on Day 103, and with him came East Nile. The virus quickly overwhelmed much of the town's population. Bethany and her uncle would flee with the other townsfolk who hadn't been killed or infected, but the disease followed, and Uncle Will would come down with illness. He and the other sick would separate themselves from the main group, choosing to "wait out" the disease knowing that the chance of recovery was slim-to-none. Bethany was unwilling to leave behind the only family she had left in this world, but Uncle Will gave her little choice in the matter, giving her his old .22 rifle (he kept his handgun) and telling her he'd catch up soon. It was an obvious lie but even Bethany understood that the man balked at the thought of dying in front of his only niece. She and the remainder of the group continued on without the sick towards Rochester Evacuation Zone.

John has continued school, participating in multiple sports and getting good grades. I'd like to request an expansion of the bio for both characters, and a several drop in carry weight for both. seeing as the average soldier carries 70 pounds with them, and your 17 year old carries more than that.

She was all she had left and even then she was gone.

Full Bio:
Born on October 9th in Cincinnati Ohio she lived in the run of the mill nuclear family. Her father was a police officer in the CPD, with her mother who worked online. Her older sister has since moved out and worked in LA as a waitress trying to get famous, she was always the dreamer. Miranda was an introverted person who spend much of her time writing or gaming online. Once a year her family would take trips out to the country for camping in a nearby national park. Days before the virus hit Ohio she and a group of friends left to go camping at Cuyahoga Valley national park. The first few days were the same as all the other times Miranda went with her family, but the only thing different was she was with her friends. After her first three days out in the park, they heard the pops of gunshots, one of their friends who was in the national guard(18, he enlisted early so he is still in Highschool)dismissed them as poachers. By the fifth day helicopters were becoming more and more common. As they were running low on food and beer a few took the car to head back into town. As they came back they told about how they saw a man get eaten by another and the police shooting him time and time again and that he would never die. This prompted them to disregard the rule they made to not go on thier phones. As Miranda turned on her phone she was several miscalls from her father over the course of four days. As she called back he answered in a worried voice and telling them what had happened. As they started packing a car pulled up, one of the National Parks service, the park ranger told them to leave and the park was being shut down. As they got out of the park they made it to the highway where the National Guard was setting up barriers. As they reached a checkpoint, the member of the gorup was in the national guard notified them of who he was and was taken out of the car an they soon passed. As the drove closer to the city the sound of gunshots filled the air. As she arrived to her home she left her friends. For the next months they would stay camped up as the city fell apart around them. The once great city of Cincinnati was hit, the infection spread like wild fire. Over time they along with several other people were forced to the roof looking for rescue. As they tuned into the radio they learned that Cincinnati was one of the worst hit cities in the United States and the government was going to destroy the city to prevent the infection. Over the next few days they worked for rescue and it finally came. As they were taken out of the city by helicopter, and moved western Pennsylvania at Camp Moore, they learned of the fate of the city. The US military had detonated a nuclear device on the city. As the days ticked by they were moved north to Rochester, New York to the International Airport now one of the largest refugee centers on the east coast. Her father was killed by Canadian soldiers after he was caught steeling food, and her mother was ill. As they arrived in Rochester her mother was taken. She was now alone looking for help.

Biography: Born in Churchill, Manitoba in March of 1985, Hannah was the child of a oil driller and a real estate saleswoman. She grew up without a large presence from her father due to the man spending most of his time working off in the far North on oil platforms. Nevertheless Hannah grew up normally, with guidance from her mother in her academics, and the help of friends in social aptitude and her father occasionally on hunting trips.

It wasn't until Hannah was in 11th grade when she settled on where she wanted to go in life, and upon her 17th birthday, she had her perent's write a request form, and she was officially inducted into the Canadian Armed Forces. After three weeks, she was shipped off to the 3rd Battalion of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, also known as The Patricias. As a light infantry Battalion, Hannah was delivered a veritable sucker punch to the gut of what army life was like, but she slogged on through. Eventually she was deployed to Southern Afghanistan in 2003, going through five total rotations, before she eventually volunteered to partake in the formation of the Canadian Special Operations Regiment.

She was a member of the CSOR for nearly three years, before an IED explosion not only wounded her gravely, but nearly ended her career. After 9 months in hospital and eighteen surgeries to remove the shrapnel, Hannah was once again cleared for duty. Though instead of returning to the CSOR, she was invited to join JTF2. She took the offer, and for the past 8 years she's remained a loyal member of the Canadian Armed Forces, and one of the world's military elite. Whether or not that will give her any success in the new world remains to be seen.

Name: James Lake
Gender: Male
Age: 24
Description: About 6'3", with a heavy-set build probably around 200lbs (90.7kg). Fairly evident that he used to be overweight. Hands have a large variety of small scars.
Occupation: Student of Physics (Graduate Program - California Institute of Technology), California Air National Guard (Reserve Duty - Second LT), Gas Station Attendant.
Carry Weight: 40 Kilos and he can carry that for a while before tiring out, though he never goes above 20 if he can help it, every 1% of your body weight in your pack makes you 6 seconds slower per mile and can wreak havoc on your running speed and distance.
Strengths:
Intelligence - The kid's booksmart and can talk your ear off about nearly any subject. Is this going to be overly useful in a survival situation? Not too much, but it does have its applications.
Discipline - Will do what he's told and he'll do it efficiently how you tell him to do it. He's fairly reserved and doesn't get 'rowdy'.
Survival Training - Has basic knowledge of shelter building, fire making, and other survival tools. Can hunt small game with relative ease and knows native edible plants in his homeland.
Big guy - He's pretty big. Can carry a lot of stuff if need be.
Weaknesses:
Yes-man - Will not speak out against others, even when he thinks what's happening is a bad idea or he disagrees with their choices. Tends to do what he's told because he doesn't want anyone to dislike him.
Inexperienced - Despite being trained in the military, he doesn't have any experience in combat, and has never really had to use his survival knowledge.
Out of Shape - Was not the most fit guy before the outbreak, just needed to be good enough to pass PT tests. The past few months have improved his fitness level, but he is not a star athlete, and may never be.
Personal Belongings: 16.5kg out of 40kg
Fleece Military Jacket (Foliage)
Brown T-shirt
Underclothes
U.S. Air Force BDU Pants
Med. ALICE pack (4.31kg)
Four small books (<1kg)
Ares SCR Sport Configurable semi-automatic Rifle 7.62X39 (2.6kg)
2x 10 round magazines (1kg)
Small waterproof box of ammo - 20 rounds (1 kg)

Biography:Grew up in a rural Kentucky town, a time he remembers very fondly. Both of his parents were in the National Guard, though his father was a computer programmer and his mother a stay at home mom. James was a brilliant young kid, impressing his teachers and subsequently being teased by his peers. He didn't mind too much at first, he liked being smart. This intelligence wasn't limited to any particular field, and James quickly picked up many new hobbies and interests. He joined the boy scouts, participated in theater, took online classes, and many other things in his spare time. He worked hard throughout high school but his grades suffered slightly when he found out that his father would be deployed to the Middle East. His father eventually returned, having suffered nothing more than a few scratches during his deployment, and James had graduated with very good (though not the highest) grades and amazing test scores.

James applied to CIT, which was a dream university of his, but was denied. He instead attended a college in Idaho, joining the Air National Guard to help pay for his tuition, and eventually graduated with a Bachelor's degree in physics and a 4.0 GPA. This, and some personal interviews with CIT professors, finally got him into the university of his dreams. After one year of work he visited his parents in Kentucky, shortly before the virus swept across the United States. James doesn't like to remember how everything happened, it was bloody, and violent, and traumatic (and too lengthy to write here, perhaps in a flashback). Needless to say, he was the only one to walk away from his hometown, a rifle on his shoulder, and terror in his eyes. He assumed that his unit had been deployed out in the West, but being out of communication posed several problems.

He was quickly picked up by a group of refugees and soldiers on their way to New York, and he stuck with them the whole way. Now he's joining a group of survivors heading to safe havens there, where he hopes to rejoin his comrades and do some good against this outbreak.

No more than 3 active military characters.
No more than 5 4 former military characters.
No more than 5 Law Enforcement Officers.

And by LEO I mean patrol or detective, not SWAT.

Here is an idea, Private security? Not the flashy, high profile ex-hitman, I mean the medium level hired gun with a pistol, some hand to hand combat skills, and a reservists education in how to not loose one's shit and be eaten by the unholy monsters that are the infected.

How does a SIG SG550, P30L, Collapsible Baton, and a butterfly knife sound?

Weapons clearance. The SIG would likely be semi-auto only and use STANAG mags, other then that, the app will be up by tomorrow night, if work doesn't kill me.

If those guns don't have a permit you aren't gonna be keeping them long.

Allow me to reiterate: No permit = no proof of weapons safety ability
