"What the hell is a Bowl?" Fawz asked, scratching his head as he attempted to follow the conversation from his couch bed on the other side of the motel room.

"You put food in it dipshit." Alex replied facetiously from behind the counter of the dinky room's kitchenette. "You know... you eat like soup and stuff from it?"

Fawz flipped him the bird before turning towards Dieter and the other team.

"Seriously... what's the Bowl?"

Dieter nodded. "Well, it depends. In this case, its the lowest tier championship. So... in short, we've played well enough to warrant a shot at winning a trophy. On the other side however, we sucked to the point where we weren't capable of playing for the Plate or Cup."

"Must be what happens when you shanghai a bunch of guys into playing competitive car crashing with people five times our size," Ilya retorted sarcastically, lounging on a converted easy chair in the corner of the living room.

Lange ignored him. "For not knowing a single thing about rugby, to be competing for any kind of trophy is an amazing accomplishment. I won't sell us short, whether we win or lose we win."

Halvor''s eyes went two different directions as he heard Dieter's paradox. His inebriated mind fought hard and long to try and make sense of how losing could equal winning, but eventually the overwhelming compulsion to repent won out. Perched precariously on top of a stool the crew had borrowed from their adventures at the Black Hole Club, he leaned over and released the past two days of binge drinking into a partially ice machine bucket. There was little risk of him falling, given the sheer amount of duct tape still binding his arms and legs, as well as the copious layers securing his waist to the seat cushion.

"Havlor's alive," Rolf mumbled, tossing a casual glance and errant finger towards the kitchen. "Should we let him loose?"

"Only if you want to spend tonight in the drunk tank with him. You do realize we just narrowly missed the cops last night, right?" Solomin warned.

With raised hands Dieter quieted the team.

"Yes, Halvor is alive... But let's focus on the task at hand. We're playing a hardy Nassaki team. Now, I haven't heard much about them but they are ranked higher than us. However, we have one win on them. I won't argue that we're better, because we're not. We can't be better if we don't even have a baseline to measure improvement from. But we stand a good chance."

"So basically," Hans suggested, "We keep playing the game the way we've been playing it, and hope and pray we have something magical happen to us?"

"There's no praying... Let's be real. We win or lose by sheer luck alone seeing where we stand today. That being said though, we can do what we've been doing and try to learn from the other teams. I think we stand a good chance." Lange concluded. "If we need to start running drills, let's do it. We can do our best to imitate Nassaki and prepare for them."

"Or you can let me out?" A muffled, distinctly female voice muttered from within the room.

Instantly, the team was silent.

"Where'd that come from?" Erwin asked, glancing around in mild panic.

"Bathroom!" Halvor managed to force out in between spurts. "Bathroom!"

Dieter and his crew quickly scrambled for impromptu weapons, fumbling helter-skelter and knocking over furniture. Many grabbed pans from the kitchenette's pantry, whereas Dieter himself brandished an upturned coat rack. The carefully maneuvered into position near the single bathroom they all were sharing, tucked into a corner just off the main living room and adjoining double bedroom of the unit.

"Is anyone still there? Hello?' The same voice asked. "Hello?? Hello!! Come on guys... this isn't funny anymore. Eggplant! I said eggplant! Let me out!"

Kovalenko, the only one of the group who had been in the Army previously, pressed himself up against the door in breaching position. Casting a full-view look, he confirmed all of his friends were in combat positions. With a single hand signal, he ordered the tactical entry.

Dieter yanked the door handle and flung it open, just in time to avoid direct impact from a tiny spitfire hurling forth from behind the aperture. She charged forth, completely naked, and slammed like a pinball into several of the players before bouncing off. Fists, pans, and coat racks flailed everywhere without direction. Liev completely missed with his frying pan, forcing Maksim to duck out of the way at last minute before it went flying through an exterior window and into the parking lot below. The demon herself landed several surprisingly strong punches into Fawz, who had the wind knocked out of him as he doubled over. From around the corner, Halvor hopped as best he could in the stool to come and help. He cleared the transitional metal lip, but caught a leg and was sent tumbling face first into the faux wooden flooring. He landed squarely with a heavy thud and muffled groan.

In an instant, the entire battle was over. All twelve of them were in some way waylaid, either knocked unconscious by friendly fire or otherwise tied up. The woman meanwhile bolted down the hall, failing to account for Halvor. Without realizing it, her feet made contact and launched herself airborne like a ragdoll into Fawz's upturned couch bed. She landed firmly into Alexander's lap.

Halvor groaned, signalling the end of the engagement and pffering their terms of surrender.

Disappointment

That's the feeling of near every fan of the Bvrianian rugby scene on today's Sevens' action. Day one left little to be desired with two strong wins opening the day's action. A narrow loss to hosts Neu Engollon ended the streak, but signs were positive all around to reach the Plate. Racao demonstrated exactly why they sit so high in the world rankings in the world, seeing off Bvriania 28 points to 12. It started similar to the finale of the day before, the opposition rushing out to an early lead. The comeback however, took far too long. Sam Jones with three minutes left on the clock made it four tries from four games, the conversion following. The world number three solidified their number one spot in Group C, holding on into extra time, conceding one final time to Rasolo in the corner. The tactic of using him for pure pace and nothing more in the final minutes holds strong. No conversion, but Bvriania were left third, and the Plate loomed ahead.

Vangaziland were the final opponents, and should've been a sure win based on their day one loss to the drunken debutantes. Instead it would be one match Bvriania would never forget, for all the wrong reasons...

Image
Buck Jackson's face tells it all

Whether it was overconfidence, food poisoning, sorcery, or something else, Bvriania did not show up versus Vangaziland at all. The enemy struck first, within seconds via an intercept by their winger. Everyone in Sevens is speedy, he was a bit too speedy, and touched down inbetween the sticks for an easy 7-0 lead. Some far more positive play followed, Rayner making half a break to put Davis into space, the balding centre being dragged down within tasting distance of the tryline. Not to be when the Vangazers turned it over. Their positive play positively out-played Bvriania, going the length of the field in a few passes, and it was 14-0 within two minutes. Flashbacks to earlier that morning would've started flooding back. The Buccaneers rode that flood all the way to the tryline. Rayner made his break again with the centre following. No player stood to drag him down, and Pete Davis scored yet another try, missing the conversion sadly. Russia's history sums up the rest; then it got worse. So much worse. Fifteen unanswered points for the match. One bright side is Vangaziland's total failure to convert, but still, three unanswered tries!

Although it was a dreadful performance, not all the blame should lie with the team. Vangaziland are most to blame. Their performance showed a continuous improvement throughout the two days. What Bvriania thought were the top teams struggling was actually Vangaziland excelling. And so going in the later afternoon, it is the Bowl Bvriania will play for, being matched with Alice Bay, a team with few positive signs, but not none. All going well, a rematch with Falkasia could occur. A beautiful new rugby rivalry in the making. Speaking of the Bowl, as it sits outside of the top sixteen teams, Bvriania will have zero points towards the World Cup qualifying. But that's the future's concern, roll on the Bowl!

Group B Roundup - Day Two
Dave Carrey - Burgenden, Neu Engollon

Well this has been an exciting group stage hasn't it? Yes, the last group stage game of the Alpen View Brew Festival Rugby Sevens, or the AVBF 7s for short, has been played. All of the match-ups have been decided, all of the trophies are being polished so they'd be ready for tomorrow and all the teams that have been eliminated are going to enjoy one last day here as they get ready to go home empty-handed. It had been a tough and well-fought couple of days so far and, as we get ready for the final one, I'm deciding to take a look at the last day of the group stages, if only because I covered the first day in another article and I don't want to repeat myself. So let's get to it.

So, after plenty of time wandering around the festival grounds and checking out some delicious brews (more of that in my blog) let's get to the first game against AllahAkbarium, the only team in our group to not make it out of the group stage. Unfortunately, I was still unable to find any names, whether it be their players, their coaching staff, et cetera. All I knew is at this point they hadn't won a game; their first three games ended in a 25-21 defeat to Mattijana, a 24-12 defeat to New South Munster and a 31-12 defeat to the Alpine Union. Indeed, in the game after this one, they were shut out 40-0 to the Natanians and Nosts, but that's not really important. Either way, they were expected to go down easy. Except they kind of didn't, as they managed to take advantage of a few mistakes at the back, as well as a yellow card for Riley Kroger, and score a few tries. And they managed to do some good defending to stop us from getting 30+ points. Enough talk, let's get to the highlights; as always, only events that scored points or were otherwise interesting enough to talk about will be mentioned so let's get going.

Image
Riley Kroger, seen here at the Avon Knights' 41-6 thrashing of
the Auckhampton Birch Trees back at the ERC 7s Plate finals,
received his first ever card in an international in the match
against AllahAkbarium, when he high tackled an opposing player.
So, the first half. Surprisingly, they scored first, taking advantage of a missed penalty and scoring a try underneath the posts. They even managed to convert the try, which was an amazing feat if I do say so myself. However, their joy was short-lived when Gary Toda scored a try, which he then converted, to level the scores. After some good defending from both sides, Paul Koppel managed to score try number two around the fifth minute; I wasn't paying that much attention to the clock, just the action on the pitch. The downside was that he scored it on the far-left side of the pitch. You can probably guess what happened next. Still, no worries because, at the end of the first half, we were 12-7 up.

The second half was a lot more action packed. The good news was that Mical Caerofim managed to extend our lead, thanks to his third try of the tournament with Toda following it up with a spectacular conversion. The downside was that Kroger, who came on for Marcus Ruiz after Koppel's try, was given a yellow card for a particularly bad tackle. Which meant they had the opportunity to catch up to us, an opportunity they took with two consecutive tries, both of which were converted. At least Tim Crespin, who came on shortly after their third try was scored, managed to put us back in front again, with Toda adding a couple of extra points. Eventually, in the dying seconds, Toda managed to make up for the missed conversion earlier to score a drop goal, eventually finishing the match 29-21. A nail-biting game if I ever saw one and I've seen a few.

And then there was the Alpine Union, aka the Union of Socialist Alpine Republics or the USAR. This time, I did have a better understanding of what they're like, how popular rugby is in their nation and so forth. And, indeed, they were a much better team than AllahAkbarium; apart from the aforemention 31-12 win over AllahAkbarium, they also drew 21-21 against eventual runners-up the Natanians and Nosts and beat New South Munster 26-19 in their penultimate match but lost 27-15 against Mattijiana. So an easy win was going to be on the cards. Right? Kind of. They were weak offensively in that first half but managed to make a comeback in that second half, scoring a couple of tries. They still didn't give us anything to worry about, as they were unable to take the lead away from us, but at least it was a fun match. Now that's out of the way, let's get to some more highlights.

The first half was a fairly slow one. The first set of points came when Gary Toda scored a penalty from 30m roughly three minutes in. Again, I didn't really pay much attention at the time, only getting a quick glimpse at the clock when he kicked; it's something I should really stop doing and I should probably start just writing down the time the kick went through the posts or hit the posts or anything like that. Anyway, not long before the break (roughly a minute), David Kramer scored the first try of the match, managing to dodge his way. However, that wasn't the end as they very nearly scored a try in the dying seconds. In fact, there was a great big maul formed just to prevent Jack Banahan, either to help him score a try or to prevent him from scoring one; it all depended on which team each player was on. Fortunately, just as Banahan was brought down not too far from the try line, Mike Decker managed to get the ball and boot it into touch to end the first half, with Elejamie leading 10-0.

The second half? Plenty more action. For a start, Alasdair MacIlleMhìcheil scored the opponents' first try, dodging his way past Decker, Toda and Kramer before slamming the ball down past the try line, just to the left of the posts. Serge Dusautoir managed to successfully convert the try to make the score 10-7. Not long after, Paul Koppel scored a try for Elejamie, managing to run the length of the pitch, catching a kick from Marcus Ruiz and managing to make his way past the opposing players before he put the ball down past the try line. Shortly after, Elejamie won a scrum not too far from the Alpine 22, with Kramer passing to Patrick Hayden (who replaced Koppel who was having a breather after that miraculous try) who would then pass it to Mical Caerofim, the guy who ended up scoring the try. In both of these cases, Gary Toda was able to successfully convert to give us a few extra points. Banahan did manage to score a try towards the end of the second half, which Dusautoir also converted, but unfortunately for his team it was too late. When the whistle went for the last time this group stage, Elejamie had managed to win 24-14 and, with that, we secured our spot in the Cup stage.

Image
Marcus Ruiz, seen here in the Wyverns' 30-0 win over Los Reyes
back in the ERC 7s, helped set up an amazing try from Paul
Koppel. It has to be seen to be believed.
So where did everybody come? We finished top of the table with four wins and a draw, finishing with 14 points. The Natanians and Nosts came second, with 11 points from two wins, two draws and a loss; despite Mattijana having the better record (3-0-2) despite the same amount of points, they finished third due to point difference (+56 for the NAN as opposed to +5 for Mattijana). The Alpine Union finished fourth with ten points coming from two wins, a draw and two losses, whereas New South Munster came fifth, grabbing nine points from two wins and three losses. And, bringing up the rear by losing all five of their games, it's AllahAkbarium with five points. The AVBF site has all of the groups' final results written down on their site, so check it out here if you want to see it in an actual table.

Now that's that out of the way, what's going to happen next? Well, we've got our four Cup quarter-finals. The surprising top seed, Abanhfleft, will be up the Kiaser Colonies; the world number ones Nova Anglicana will be up against Frenline Delpha, Lisander will take on the hosts Neu Engollon; and we've got a tough game as we play against Racao. Damn. In the Plate quarter-finals, we've got the United States of Devonta up against the Alpine Union, the Natanians and Nosts playing Vangaziland, Islana Lunigo taking on Barunia and Hutanjia facing Mattijana. In the Bowl quarter-finals, Bvriania (whose loss to Vangaziland probably denied them a spot in the Plate stage) will try and avenge their loss in their game against Alice Bay; Nassaki will be up against Falkasia, a team that has been surprising everyone this tournament considering that they seemed to be made up of a random group of friends; Copper Cuprum will play Darmen; and, finally, cricket legends Apox will take on New South Munster. Meanwhile, Borxinoia, Wrexwic, Reformed Lazinara, Darkmania, Romaia and the aforementioned and unfortunately-named AllahAkbarium will all be going home; better luck next time lads.

Anything else that needs to be said? Not particularly, no. However, I will go ahead and update my predictions for who will win what, partially because of what quarter-final games will be played and partially because neither Lisander nor Neu Engollon will be competing for the Plate; ditto Mattijana re the Bowl. So, while I'm a lot less sure that we'll beat Racao, I'm still confident that we have a chance to win it; if not then, once again, the Cup will go to Nova Anglicana. Mattijana had a very good chance to win the Plate, although I also think the Natanians and Nosts have a very good chance to win it as well. And, finally, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Bvriania will win the Bowl. Either them or Falkasia, who have been exceeding expectations and surprising everyone. OK, now that's done, I'm going to go and get ready for tomorrow. I hope you're all looking forward to some spectacular sevens games. I know I am.

GROUP STAGE ENDS! HOSTS AHEAD!
Tiago Dons, to therugbyzone.ls

We are doing it right. Two good results and a convincing win. We are in the right way. Definitely, the Maracalo is not an impossible dream. A difficult one, and even more difficult when we think in our next match, but we're going in the right way.

Darkmania 0–41 Lisander
Lisander 24–12 Frenline Delpha

Our team will face Neu Engollon next. The Cup Quarterfinals are the best result Lisander ever had in Rugby Sevens. Maybe the unexperienced team may have some difficulties against the experienced, better trained, respected and supported team of Neu Engollon, but Patricio Bernauer is making a good job.

Neu Engollon so far:
26-26 v Racao
35-19 v Vangaziland
26-21 v Bvriania
38-12 v Falkasia
31-7 v Wrexwic
We only can hope.

And I don't have more to say, because Bernauer forbid the team to talk to media after the victory against Darkmania. Let's get all tuned. AVBF Sevens is being broadcasted by TV5Sports. And I'm not even placing a bet. I admit. I don't have balls to this.

We will pass this. But should take some time.
The team isn't making progress. Maybe the moment is not the best, maybe we should give up and return to AB instead of forcing the team to play after the impact of the Southland accident. In fact, this may be just a lot of nonsense. Probably we're not going well because of our own incompetence in forming a team exclusively to AVBF Sevens, while all of our best players were released to play professionally in the Ariannin Sevens, but these guys are together for too little.

With only one victory, we reached the Bowl in the last spot. 24th of 30. Is not enough for a nation whose both qualified teams reached the Quarterfinals of Dwile International Tournament.

Bad administration, maybe. Bad luck, maybe a lot. In a group with Abahnfleft, The Kiaser Colonies and Hutanjia, a disaster was in our way. We expected to reach at least a third place, to fight equally against The Kiaser Colonies for a best qualifying, maybe a spot in the plate. But we only defeated the weakest team of the tournament, Reformed Lazinara.

An absurd 0-50 against Abahnfleft was awful, unnaceptable. I refuse to comment. We must have been drugged or something. Not even a Penalty Goal. 22-26 againt the Kiaser Colonies had a bitter taste. We had that game in our hands. The team was completely patheticin the field. They shouldn't had a good night of sleep, because the thirs loss in a row wasn't enough to wake them um. 19-31 and the coffin was closed. After that, we faced Hutanjia. We were better than expected. But it was too late.

Let's hope Alicean players bring us a better result from Ariannin. ABRU will have some time to mix n' match players for the next event in the NSRB Sevens Series. THEY MUST DO THIS. While not, let's watch the Crux against Bvriania this morning (evening in Neu Engollon). Another loss won't hurt.

-Wow,that's fantastic.In a not-so-good sense.
-Yup,I can't really truly believe while now...
-We massacrated the other team at our last game, but even then we didn't proceed to the cup. We'll now face fellow Esportivans Vangaziland and aiblins we'll win.
-Our team is not at a good situation, but if God wants to,we'll win the plate.Sure it's not the cup,but it's still a hard competition, and to remember that both Hutanjia and Barunia will compete at the plate.
-Our first challenge will be Vangaziland, who finished third at their group winning twice and losing thrice, tied in points and with same results as both Bvriania and Falkasia, who will play at the bowl.Hutanjia will face Mattijana, who's also from Esportiva and unfortunately defeated us,the USAR,a team with we have drawn will face the United States of Devonta, and Islana Lunigo will battle Barunia for a spot at the semi-finals.
-The team must not give-up or sub-estimate their opponents, otherwise they might be eliminated.
-The team must focus a little more, and play more like in their last game, instead of trying to play in a different manner. You'll accompany Natanians and Nosts x Vangaziland here later today, and after the break we'll give commentaries at the tournament as a whole.

Team of the Tournament: 2017 ERC 7s
Adam "AD the HG" Delgado - At home in Davenport, WYKN

So that was an exciting tournament wasn't it? After the massive success that was the 2016 edition, we weren't sure how this was going to top that. After all, last year had the Rosetta Sparrows of all teams being the inaugural Cup winners, despite losing 31-9 to the Coventry Wyverns back in the ERC Grand Final a few months prior. But this year was a doozy. The Wyverns being shut out in the Cup final, the second time a playoff game ended without a team scoring a single point. The Knights dominating the Plate after being denied a spot in the Cup by the Alvis Rams, destroying Elejamie City 44-0, which was the first time a play-off game ended without a team scoring a single point, followed by a 41-6 demolition of the Birch Trees in the Plate final. And the Delphi didn't do too badly in their first sevens tournament, beating Los Reyes 21-10 in the semi-finals before narrowly falling 19-11 to the Iceland Panthers in the final. All in all, an exciting tournament and it makes you wonder how the 2018 edition would go.

Which lead me to think a bit more about the players. Or, rather, remember my team of the tournament that I did for the last ERC 7s and try and do another one of those. Because, let's face it, there have been some absolute studs throughout. There have been players that had scored amazing tries one way or another. There have been players who made brilliant tactical decisions that lead to said tries. There have been players whose kicks compliment those tries with a couple of extra points, as well as three for penalties and maybe three from drop goals. As always, only one player per team, because otherwise this would probably end up being the national team in different positions.

Forwards

The big tough men up front, these guys don't really do a whole lot of scoring but set up plenty of chances. Whether it be from a scrum, a good tackle or some clever planning, you can always count on these guys to help the backs with their game. And, due to the whole wide-open aspect of sevens, don't be surprised if they end up scoring as well. These were the three best forwards of the tournament. Let's find out why.

1. Marcus Ruiz (Coventry Wyverns): Known more for his defensive capabilities, Ruiz showed a completely out-of-character offensive side throughout the tournament. For a start, he helped set up a brilliant try from Mical Caerofim in the Cup semi-final against the Commandos, with the two passing the ball between each other until they reached the try line, presumably in an attempt to throw off the opposition. Then he very nearly scored a try in that same match, just bring inches from the try line when he was brought down. He didn't lose his defensive touch either, as he famously prevented Miguel Santos (a name that would appear later on this list) from scoring a try by pushing him outside of the 22. There were more moments from him but those two stuck in my mind the most.

2. Riley Kroger (Avon Knights): I know what you're thinking. Why isn't Mike Decker on this list? To be fair, Decker seemed a bit sluggish throughout the tournament. He wasn't as sharp and as focused throughout the tournament, which is why Findlay Martin took over the reins on the last day. Kroger on the other hand? He activated beast mode when the whistle first blew in the opening game and he never turned it off. Several brilliant tackles, plenty of good scrums and even a try against the Eagles. I'm surprised why this guy doesn't get more action, since he's one of the best (if not THE best) examples of a forward in XV quickly adapting to VII without breaking a sweat.

4. Diego Molina (Auckhampton Birch Trees): There's a very good reason why this man is the captain of the national sevens team. After all, the man's able to think of brilliant plays on the fly, which served his team well throughout the group stage and during the semi-final against Rosetta. However, they didn't work out so well against Avon but fortunately he saved face by scoring a rare drop goal in that 41-6 defeat. Not much else to say since, let's face it, this man's a sevens legend and not much else needs to be said.

Backs

The backs. What needs to be said about them? You've got your scrum-halves, you've got your fly-halves, you've got your centres and you've got your wingers. Any rugby player worth their salt knows who they are and what they do. But what about the best of the best of the backs? Who shone throughout the tournament. And will the Judge Lewis-Shippley Medal winner be among them? Let's not waste any more time and get right into it.

3. Jon Auburn (Elejamie City Eagles): Auburn's one of those players that doesn't get enough love. He's an excellent scrum-half for the Eagles in both fifteens and sevens. He's scored plenty of amazing tries, like the amazing one from last year that forced the Plate 3PPO to overtime. And, this year, he managed to score the Eagles' only try of their 23-10 defeat to Rosetta in the Plate 3PPO. Maybe it's because David Kramer (who would've gone on this list if he wasn't on the same team as Molina) is too good and his kicking isn't as strong as Tim Crespin's, so he can't double as a fly-half if necessary. But it's still something Coach Kim should consider is something does happen to Kramer.

5. Armando Romero (Alvis Rams): I was originally going to give this to Gary Toda, who does some spectacular work for the national sevens side. But I didn't want this to be made up entirely of Elejamians. Anyway, the Engollonian fly-half managed some spectacular kicks for his team, like the trio of penalties in the Rams' game against the Knights, a shock 16-14 win that saw the Knights ending up in the Plate stage. Or the unbelievable drop goal he scored in the game against the Sparrows, where he managed it from the halfway point to give the Rams a 24-20 win.

6. Eddie Campbell (Rosetta Sparrows): Originally named as a replacement for Phil Mackenzie after he retired from rugby, Campbell decided to turn it down and instead concentrate on the 15-a-side game. Which is a pity because his skills would've been really useful in Vekaiyu. No worries, he still showed plenty of promise in Edgebaston. Like his excellent speed which lead to a flurry of brilliant tries throughout the tournament, his clever planning which lead to some more good tries... let's face it, we should call this guy "The Try Machine", because that's all he is. He's a machine that makes tries happen. Here's hoping he'll be consider taking part in Savojarna, Watson's Bay or any of the other stops on the Sevens Series.

7. Adam McCracken (Murgon Bullfrogs): The Judge Lewis-Shippley Medal winner which, to anyone unfamiliar with the ERC 7s, is the award given to the player of the tournament. And there's a damn good reason for it. He scored both tries in the Cup final against the Wyverns. He scored four tries in a row in the opener against the Edgebaston Warriors to help his team win 39-15. And he not only managed to intercept a pass on the Bullfrogs' tryline but he managed to push his way over to the Wyverns' line to score a try; a try that helped the Bullfrogs win 15-7 even if the conversion missed. Overall, a brilliant player not only worthy of a spot on this list but also on the national team.

Subs

Twelve teams in the ERC, twelve players in total a rugby sevens team. These five may not have been the best on the field but, let's face it, they still have to be mentioned. Either because they showed off plenty of talent, because they show plenty of promise or because they were the best player on their team. These five are the hypothetical substitutes to the star seven. Let's check them out.

8. Paete Maenacol (Iceland Panthers): Whether it be for the 15-a-side or the 7-a-side, you can't deny the talent this guy has. Immediately jumping onto the Panthers' boat after the successful EUXV tour of Bvriania, Maenacol quickly adapted to sevens and managed to provide several good tackles and plenty of good scrums. He very nearly even scored a try in the final against Mainsborough, although fortunately he managed to turn it around and let it set up the game-winning try for the Panthers. It doesn't matter if he's a winger, a prop or even a hooker, Maenacol can do it all. Let's hope this is the start of a long and fruitful career.

9. Luke Mullan-Rolson (Edgebaston Warriors): Another newcomer from the EUXV, Mullan-Rolson signed up for his local Edgebaston Warriors not long after the EUXV tour and not long after he graduated from Midland University. And while the Warriors did struggle throughout the tournament, despite their city hosting it, Mullan-Rolson still gave his hometown fans plenty to cheer about. His two tries in the Bowl 3PPO, for example. But, most importantly, was his try against the Bullfrogs in that home opener. A try that saw his team lead 12-10 going into the break. Again, here's hoping he'll do well and has a long and satisfying career.

10. Gary Toda (Davenport Commandos): No good list of brilliant sevens players would be complete without this guy. And, indeed, his skills were on show throughout the tournament. For example, he scored all 22 points in the Commandos' 22-3 win over the Delphi. He managed to score conversions from 40m out like they were nothing. And there was that third place playoff game against the Rams, where he and the aforementioned Romero traded penalty after penalty. The only reason I put Toda here instead of the main seven is because he didn't seem as great as he normally does during the season or during international tournaments but, let's face it, not only would it be a crime if I left him out but also my inbox would be flooded with angry emails.

11. Al Denfry (Mainsborough Delphi): After an astounding ten years playing for a local team in his home city of Kingston over in Quebec, Denfry eventually got signed for the Delphi over in Mainsborough back in 2016, just in time for the new season. He won over audiences and managed to help the team make it back to the ERC after a hard-fought playoff. And, while he and his team did struggle against most of their opponents, Denfry still managed to put in plenty of effort, even scoring the Delphi's sole try in their 19-11 defeat to the Panthers in the final. Overall, a solid player worthy of a spot on this list.

12. Miguel Santos (RC Los Reyes): And, finally, we come to Los Reyes' player of the tournament. While his team struggled throughout and failed to win a game against anyone, Santos still managed to shine though. There was his try from the 21-10 defeat to Mainsborough, when he intercepted a pass from Denfry and began a counterattack, resulting in him leaping over Mike Murray and slamming the ball on the ground behind the posts for a try. And he very nearly scored a try in that 30-0 defeat to Coventry, which was sadly disallowed when it turned out that he received the ball from a forward pass. But still, he was a bright spot in an otherwise dismal tournament for Los Reyes; here's hoping the season would be a massive improvement.

And that is my list. Agree? Disagree? Any suggestions or improvements? You know what to do. As for me? I'm going to count down until the start of the AVBF 7s, where hopefully we'll see as many great match-ups as we did over in Edgebaston. Take care everyone.

Lisander 21-12 Neu Engollon, 2 minutes to the end of the quarterfinal.

"No rest, remember where you are! They won't sell it easy!" Patricio Bernauer was shouting like a madman from the pitch.

Not that those players were really wanting to rest. Latta, Bojan and Held set for the scrum at midfield. One misstep and the hosts would be back in the game.

"Crouch!"

"Bind!"

"Set!" The trio of Lisanderian forwards heard the Elejamian referee and taken power only God knows from where. And they pushed, leaving Maxi Luna alone with the ball. Luna picked up and passed quickly to the hands of Stadler. He needed one second to locate a way between the line, but one second was too much time. Venmont reached him before. The only way was passing.

"LASS!"

Eran Lasses fixed his route, picked up the ball and sprinted. To 10 meter line, to 22 meter line. Hoerner and Renvier surrounded him. He passed and shouted.

"CASTELL!"

Eleazar Castell had only Marino Riazzi in front of him. Wing against wing. The lisanderian needed only a small space. And he found it. A sidestep to the right, just centimeters behind the arms of Riazzi. He threw himself into the in-goal zone, sliding and entering the last few yards before the sideline, knocking down the corner pole. 26-21. Conversion was no good.

The chronometer was indicating 13:29 when Luna kicked to restart the game. A shirt one, to contest quickly. They kept pressing. Venmont passed to Riazzi but the door was closed. The forwards reached him and Stadler picked up the ball. They could hear the horn, but the forwards were enclosing him again. He passed one more time, right to Castell, who kicked out, ending that last minutes of panic.

"We are in the semifinals! GREAT!!!" The players were euphoric.

"Yup! Nova Anglicana is the next." Patricio Bernauer said and their expression changed.

"Oh. Nova Anglicana. Right." Eleazar Castell picked up a Yeckr can and opened it, taking a drink. "I'll need to rest a lot before the next match, so please don't scream how much you are afraid before facing the number 1 team in the world, right?"

"We're not afraid!" shouted Eran Lasses.

And that talk ended with every player reaching a beer, a soda or a sports drink. Everyone was silent, thinking about the next game, probably the most important of their careers so far.

LAST MATCHES Directly from the archive of all Irises matches

Tournament City Venue Result
AVBF Sevens 2 Burgunden, NEG Confederacy Park Exhibition Pitch D Lisander 19-26 Elejamie
Rugby World Cup 25 New City, Orlandiana, FFR RT&T Stadium Lisander 8-7 Elejamie RWC 25 Round of 16
Olympic Sevens Provinsk, VEK Akyolo Complex Lisander 19-21 Elejamie

Elejamie versus Lisander is becoming a very worthy rivalry. The teams have faced each other three times, with two wins for the Elejamians and one for the Irises. They are always well played games. The 8-7 for the Lisanderians in the quarterfinals of RWC25 may still haunt the Elejamians. The last time these same players entered the field to face each other, the match ended Elejamie's 21-19 victory at the Olympic Games in Provinsk, Vekayu. The team led by Gaetan Latta will enter the field this afternoon with no intention of losing a second time. "Our first serious game was against Elejamie, we gave a lot of bad luck in the draw of groups, but we still managed to do a great result against the team that finished with the Bronze medal. We already proved that we are capable of playing equally. " Latta said, in an interview.

Off the field, the relationship could not be friendlier. Lisanderians and Elejamians are currently partners on the Executive Committee of the NSRB and the rumors behind the scenes of National Rugby are that LRU has an interest in player interchange between PRO12 and ERC. If they are facts or just rumors, it is not known, there is no confirmation from either side.

The fact is that, be they friends or rivals, they get on the field in the next hours, and the eyes of the world rugby (except the ones in the ABSA Ariannin Sevens) are facing the Confederacy Park in Burgunden. Lisander won convincingly against Nova Anglicana, and comes boosted for the final match. The eyes are on Gary Toda, Peter Koppel and Diego Molina on one side, and on the other most likely Maximilian Luna, Atlas Caron and especially Eleazar Castell. Both the Lisanderian Wing and the Elejamian Fly-Half has the power to unbalance this match. The second probably will not stay long in the LRU Championship.

Sunday afternoon is traditionally small leagues day, but not this one. It's day to stay connected on TV (TV5Sports broadcasts all Lisander games, TV5Sports 3 is broadcasting the tournament in its entirety). We here at the writing of TheRugbyZone we are doing will be to follow up and comment on the match, live on meep @TRZ. If you still do not follow us, go there quickly, there's still time!

Welcome back once again to the AVBF Sevens, here in Burgenden Neu Engollon. Or, rather, welcome to the first Cup semi-final of the AVBF 7s: Elejamie vs the Kiaser Colonies. Elejamie, the reigning Cup winners, finished top of Group B with four wins against Mattijana, the Alpine Union, New South Munster and AllahAkbarium, as well as a draw against the Natanians and Nosts, followed by a narrow 24-19 win against Group C victors Racao; the Kiaser Colonies, on the other hand, won their games against Hutanjia, Coppor Cuprum, Alice Bay and Reformed Lazinara and, although they lost their group stage game against Abanhfleft, they managed to get their revenge with a shocking 28-21 quarter-final win against that same team. And the winner of this game would compete for the Cup, where they'll face either Lisander or Nova Anglicana, two teams that have won all of their games so far...

And here are the captains leading their teams out. And, as we bring up the players list, you can see that neither side have made any changed since their last encounters; Elejamie and the Kiaser Colonies sending out the same players that played in their clashes against Racao and Abanhfleft respectively. The ref - Ion Mihai Constantinescu - calls both captains over, flips a coin. It's tails and the Kiaser Colonies are to kick off first. Elejamian skipper Diego Molina shakes hands with his Kaiser counterpart, both players shake hands with the ref and they get ready to kick off.

0:00 - And we're underway! George Beale kicks it in the air for the Kiaser Colonies, the ball being caught by David Kramer who begins the Elejamian offensive. Kramer rushes his way past Corey Barnett, past Oliver Paul but he gets brought down by Rob Maloney just a few inches short. Paul Koppel finally catches up to him, takes the ball off of Kramer, passes it to Caerofim. Is this going to be a try? It certainly is! Mical Caerofim runs past Arthur King, runs around the posts and throws himself down onto the ground for a try, just behind the goalposts. Absolutely un-damn-believable. 5-0 to the home team now, as everyone tries to process what had just happened.

...

And Toda with his first kick of the game, taking a conversion from 29m out. An easy conversion, since he's just in front of the posts. He boots it and makes it an excellent 7-0. Absolutely brilliant.

>2:00 - Beale to attempt a penalty now following Decker's bad tackle. 35m out. A tricky angle but it shouldn't be any worry for him. He kicks. It sails through the air. And it's bounces off the post and goes into touch. Unlucky. David Kramer runs to the line and begins the line-out.

>4:00 - We've got a scrum 30m from the Kiaser tryline. Kramer feeds the ball through the tunnel. He then grabs the ball, passes it to Toda. Toda now over to Koppel. Koppel passes it back to Toda just a couple of inches short of the line. It seems to have thrown off the opposition as Gary Toda slides down past the line for a try. 12-0 to Elejamie, now. An absolutely brilliant play from Gary Toda and Paul Koppel there, extending Elejamie's lead.

...

Toda to convert his own try now from 32m out. He's at a good angle, might need to put a bit of a spin on things. Takes a deep breath. He kicks. It's good, it's good, it's another two points for the home side. 14-0 now and the Kiaser Colonies are probably starting to feel like they should get some tries in.

>5:00 - Toda. Toda now passes it to Caerofim. Caerofim gets tackled but Koppel makes a grab for it. Koppel passes it over to Toda. Toda passes it back to Koppel. Koppel goes down but still manages to put the ball down for a try! 19-0 now. Things are starting to heat up now for the Kiaser Colonies. They need to score some points now to stay in the game, else they risk a humiliating shutout.

...

Toda now to convert. 31m out. He's not wasting time, he's going straight into it as he boots it into the air and it sails back down between the posts. 21-0 to the home side now. Absolutely stunning.

<7:00 - We're just coming up to the halfway point. In fact, as I was saying that last sentence we have gone past the seven minute mark, next time the ball goes into touch that's that. Koppel. Koppel now passes it over to Caerofim. Caerofim's getting tackled by King. Arthur King really wants to bring Caerofim down. And Mical Caerofim accidentally wanders into touch.

And on that note, the ref blows for half-time. The score is Elejamie 21, the Kiaser Colonies 0. The Kiaser coach must clearly want a word with his players about their performance during that first half. Absolutely spectacular performance from the home side, however, with three converted tries from Mical Caerofim, Paul Koppel and the man who's been doing the converting, Gary Toda. Now, both teams going to the dressing room for a quick breather and a word from their coaches as we go back to the studio and go over the highlights.

7:00 - And now Toda kicks to restart. The Kiaser Colonies desperately need to score a try now. They've replaced a couple of their players; James Watson and Seta Naisirani being replaced by Ken Aisley and Heath Newsome. The Kiaser fans left in the crowd are hoping that those substitutions would tip the scales in their favour...

>9:00 - Toda to score a penalty now. The good news is that he's in a good position, not too far to the left from the posts. The bad news is that he's at a tricky distance, about 43m out. He could strain himself if he's not careful. He kicks. And that's not troubling the posts as it bounces off into touch. Kiaser Colonies to restart. Hard luck Gary.

>10:00 - Koppel. Koppel passes it over to Kramer. Kramer passes it over to Gary Toda. Toda goes down, Koppel grabs the ball and passes it to Caerofim. Caerofim also gets tackled but he offloads it to Koppel. Koppel passes it to David Kramer. Kramer leaps out of the way of Arthur King, dodges Rob Maloney. He's in the 22! He's all clear! David Kramer... TRY! 26-0 now for Elejamie as David Kramer throws himself onto the ground and slides in for another five points. And the Kiaser Colonies desperately need a miracle to stay in this match.

...

Toda to convert now. 33m out. He's in front of the posts Will he make it another two points? He kicks. It looks good. And it's another easy two points now. 28-0 to Elejamie. And I think this game is starting to look a bit out of reach for the Kiaser Colonies.

>11:00 - Newsome. Newsome passes it to Ainsley. Ainsley gets tackled, Beale recovers and passes it to- Mike Decker intercepts and begins the Elejamian offensive. Decker passes it over to Diego Molina. Molina passes it to Kramer. Kramer gets tackled, Toda recovers and passes it to Koppel. Koppel goes upfield. Koppel offloads it to Caerofim. Caerofim passes it over to Toda. Toda gets tackled but Kramer recovers and passes it to Caerofim. Caerofim now with the ball. Into the 22. Gets brought down and there's a mad rush for the ball. Koppel recovers and passes it to Kramer. Kramer pushes his way past King, Maloney and Paul. Corey Barnett trying to push David Kramer out. Will it work? Nope! Kramer just managed to get past the try-line and puts the ball down for a second try. 33-0 to Elejamie. I think that's it for the Kiaser Colonies; it'll be a miracle if they can recover from this.

...

Toda to convert again from 35m out. A bit of a tricky position but if he can play his cards right it'll be a good couple of bonus points. A deep breath from Toda. He kicks. And some good spin on it, will it go through? It does. 35-0. Absolute humiliation. Absolutely astonishing.

>13:00 - And we now go to a scrum in the Elejamian 22. David Kramer feeds the ball into the tunnel. And what's this? Corey Barnett has won the ball and passes it to George Beale. George Beale passes it over to Newsome. Newsome goes down, Ainsley recovers and passes it back to Beale. Could this be a Kiaser try? It is! 35-5 now. That should be some consolation to the away side.

...

Beale to convert his try now. He's in a good spot, right ahead of the posts. He's at a good distance, 29m. He's kicked it well and he makes it 35-7. Not enough to worry Elejamie but it should give the Kiaser fans something to cheer about.

<14:00 - We're nearing the end of this match now. Score hasn't changed since that try and conversion not too long ago. Beale. Beale passes to Newsome. Newsome gets tackled but is just beaten to the punch by Koppel. And just to let you know that we've just passed the seven minute mark here in the second half, so next time the ball goes into touch it's game over. Koppel passes it to Toda. Is Toda going for a try? No, he's booted the ball out of play.

And, with that, the ref blows his whistle. That's it, that's your game, folks. Your final score, Elejamie 35, the Kiaser Colonies 7. Absolutely astonishing, a game that was decided with that first try from Mical Caerofim. Elejamie now off to the Cup final, where they'll play either Lisander or Nova Anglicana; a game that's coming up after the break. And now both captains shaking hands with each other, congratulating each other on a good game as both sides get ready to go back to the changing room. And, with that, I'm Matt Holland, back to the guys in the studio for highlights and a preview of the Lisander/Nova Anglicana game.

“Hello Neu Engollon and to our international viewers. You’re tuned into the NETV 7 Sports Update and I’m your host, Magda Wertauer with my co-host, Karl Demais.”

“We’re live at Confederacy Park in Burgunden, just blocks from our regular studios in the NETV tower. It’s been an incredible three days of beer, music, festivities, beer, rugby, friendship and oh...did I say beer? The Alpen View Brew Festival and the Sevens tournament have been raging for three days now.”

“But let’s focus for now on the rugby. We know you all must have heard by now. After the morning’s quarterfinals, our beloved Goats lost to the Irises of Lisander, 12 to 26. Still, just because the Goats are no longer in it doesn’t mean all exciting rugby has ceased.”

“Of course not. As the day has gone on, the matches have gotten more intense as the pressure builds to walk away with a trophy, whether it be the Maracalo Cup, the Plate or the Bowl.”

“Who are you liking for the Cup match, Karl?”

“I’m going to be equivocal because I just think it’s too close to go on record. Both teams look good. Both have the experience, although Elejamie has a bit more when it comes to the NSRB 7’s circuit. If we went off expectations and that experience, it would definitely be the Elejamians. However, if we went on determination and youthful strength, it would certainly be the Irises of Lisander. They have seen an unprecedented rise in a short time.”

“Not just in sevens but in union and league, as well.”

“Exactly. No one was talking about Lisander rugby just three years ago, and now look at how far they’ve come. It’s anybody’s match as far as I’m concerned. Let me turn it back on you, Magda. Who are you seeing to take the Plate?”

“That’s another tough call. Natanians and Nosts have been a strong, steady team when it comes to rugby sevens, but Hutanjia are no slouches either…”

“They haven’t had the best luck when it comes to sevens. League seems to be more their code.”

“Still, they hold their own and have stayed in the top 20. They’re not known for their running game, which, yes, I realize that’s a lot of sevens, but they are known generally in rugby for their strategy and defense. I have to say it will be close but I think the Spiders can do it.”

“Then there’s the Bowl…”

“It really would have been a Cinderella story to see Falkasia take it, but...it was not meant to be. Bvriania looks strong and I think they’re the favorites. A solid team that should have done better this tournament but for crappy luck. I think they need redemption and I think it’s going to drive them in the Bowl final.”

“Let’s not fully discount New South Munster, who have been coming out solid as another smaller nation with a lot of heart. They were no slackers on the pitch and they certainly showed that they could hold their own in Group B, a group heavily dominated by solid traditional rugby teams, not counting AllahAkbarium who seemed to have been ghosts out there on the pitch.”

“So you think New South Munster? We’ll have to disagree then. Friendly wager?”

“Off air, we’ll talk.
We need to head to a sponsor break.
When we come back, we'll review the other semi-final matches of the day and get a bit of a beer report as to who’s favored for some medals…”

“Stay tuned here to NETV Sports 7 and our special live coverage of the AVBF 7’s. We’ll be back after this sponsor message…”

“Fideh! Wut a bunch o shit, mon!” Jelego reached up to slam the button off on the TV, but couldn’t quite reach. He reached down for one of his cleats and he was back up, smacking the monitor button and finally getting it off and knocking it loose and cockeyed in it’s frame that hung it from the corner of the locker room.

Vlad Sokota shrugged.
“Dey said we ginna win. Wut de matter wit dat, mon?”

“Jus’ all de other shit they spout on about. Like dey know rugby.”

“Dey Magda and Karl, like two o de most famous sportscasters in de world when it come to de rugby.”

“White rugby. I hate Neu Engollon.”

“Wot mon?! Dis place is great! Lots o beer…”

“Expensive beer!”

“Lots o women!”

“Women dat don’ talk to brown men lik ya and me.”

“Ya jus findin’ stuff ta be angry bout, ya pono! Ya de racist!”

“Nah, I be really…”

Joe Charopa stormed in to the locker room.
“Hey...Fideh! Wut ya guys doin? We supposed to be on de pitch warmin up for de match! Coach and Captain lookin’ all over for ya! Come on!”

Sokota shook his head.
“Man we gonna hear about this now, specially if we lose. I’m out.”

Reluctantly, Jelego followed.

It falls apart

At least two thousand people were at the Soria International Airport to receive these guys on a Sunday night. Anyone have any doubt that this is Lisander's sport?

About two years ago or so, Lisander Rugby took on the challenge of reaching the top of the world. The second of the ten rounds was concluded yesterday with the long-awaited Alpen View Brew Festival Sevens title. The Irises Sevens, continuing the work done by the main Irises, knew how to seize the moment and bring us the first internationally renowned championship, with the NS Rugby Board seal. We are no longer that incipient, amateur nation, unable to look outside its borders, visiting at most Alice Bay. We are, increasingly, a nation among the great.

All this is due to the efforts of many people, but in particular, there are three names. Two of them, Andreas Vins and Patrício Bernauer, members of a generation of former amateur players with a lot of desire to change the local rugby scene, have accepted gigantic challenges. Vins decided to go head-to-head with the group of Florent Casas, a former representative of the LRU, to bring a new reality to national rugby. Bernauer, on the other hand, left his job as Physical Education Professor at the University of Soria to work as assistant to the third name of our list, and perhaps the most important name of this transformation. Leonard Marian Assen, with almost 50 years of rugby, accepted, with no guarantee of success, the task to select the best players of this generation, to train them in professional regime and to take them to the top. Instead of refusing the new, he abandoned retirement and moved on to our Rugby. He is nothing less than our father, and we need to be grateful to his great love and knowledge about the game.

Players like Kevin Armada, brothers Matthew and Maurice Gear, Sebastian Livon, Arno Florian, Henri Domani and more recently Gaetan Latta, Atlas Caron and Eleazar Castell, have been showing excellent results. Future generations, with young people like Marian Ortegon and Ricardo Porto, and women, led by Clare Graad, also bring an encouraging prognosis. Lisander Rugby is booming. And it's not just at the national team level. It is on all fronts. From support to small teams, amateur ones and schools, to global initiatives such as running for NSRB and fostering play in their partner nations, first with Tri-Nations and then with Imperan Rugby. Lisander follows without brakes by the path of evolution. The win over Elejamie in the AVBF final was the definitive realization that Rugby at Lisander is definitely great. Not yet so great but with all the potential of the world to be. Just follow the path we're on. It is not easy, in fact. And we've been alerted since we got on the air. But let's be fair. With the title of the AVBF, any derogatory argument you could think against Lisander Rugby isn't valid. It falls apart.

ABSA Ariannin Sevens have final matches postponed
Prince Johannes will present Order of the Sport Merit to Irises Sevens
Soria Park is being prepared to URSA Sevens
So, you still have not understood what Imperan Rugby is?
