[ACCEPTED] You're Psychotic, @@LEADER@@!

Postby Jutsa » Mon Sep 25, 2017 7:29 am

This might be a bit too general, but I had already made this and I figured no harm could come about from posting it to see if it's still any worthwhile.
This is actually based off of the thing I read something along the lines of "anarchies are most likely not truly anarchies, and psychotic dictatorships are most likely not psychotic, but totalitarian".

As such, I made this based off of that. No clue if it's any good, but I hope you enjoy. :P

Title: "You're Psychotic, @@LEADER@@!"
The Issue: The WA category (a system designed by the World Assembly to name nations based on economic, political, and personal freedoms) has classified your beloved nation as a psychotic dictatorship. A leak found out about this, and spilled the information to the public. You've called upon several of your friends and family to head advice on how to improve your image.
Validity: Nation must be a psychotic dictatorship (i.e. super low (civil/political/economic) freedom), nation does not hold elections

Option: "You know, @@LEADER@@, I know you're trying your best to run our great nation as fair as possible, but maybe the Word Assembly is right," suggests your mother, who is currently combing through your hair against your will and the law. "I'm not saying you shouldn't have a firm grasp as leader, but maybe you could at least get rid of some of those extraordinary laws of yours, like the one involving benches in cities. Just enough to make the World Assembly reconsider, anyways."
effect: citizens may now wear shoes while watching television as long as the television is outside and the shoes are rental

Option: "Well, I'm saying you should loosen your grip, @@LEADER@@," announces your niece's illegitimate husband, who hates everyone in your family and was sent instead of your niece who you actually wanted to speak with. "We should just let people decide what they want. It doesn't matter if something goes awry; it'd at least be the majority opinion, and the needs of the many outweigh the few. Institute some democracy, @@LEADER@@!"
effect: @@NAME@@ has democratically decided to be oppressed

Option: "The bureaucrats at the World Assembly have the right idea, but I think we can agree that a free-market dictatorship is better than a socialist democracy," proposes @@RANDOMNAME@@, a shady Chivelandian arms smuggler you don't exactly recall calling. "You should focus on promoting big business in @@NAME@@. Think about the economic growth that'd become of it, all while you retain your power and keep the populace from running rampant. Do the right thing by privatizing some of the state industries, and my boys will be more than happy to make you proud."
effect: newly established private industries are monitored more than the old state industries

Validity: Nation is not in the World Assembly
Option: "Come on, @@LEADER@@! Don't listen to those anarchists from the World Assembly," comments your sister, whom your mother is now combing the hair of as mandated by law. "Just because they can't see that you're helping your citizens by giving them structure does not mean that you're doing anything wrong. You should instead denounce the leak and tell your people that the organization's set on disowning nations that are doing things right. You can prove this by showing a little bit of compassion and integrity, once in a while. Maybe you could start by bumping the health care and welfare systems, a bit?"
effect: @@LEADER@@ claims that @@NAME@@ is oppressed out of love

Option: "Hey, guys, come on, what's wrong with being psychotic?" asks your brother, whom your mother refuses to touch with a 10-foot pole. "Prove to your nation that you truly are evil incarnate, and rain down oppression and mayhem to all of your little play things! Well, except for your family, of course."
effect: @@LEADER@@ has been self-confirmed to be a tyrannical emperor of terror

I kinda think you should go the route of "Too Low on Laws" and not mention the WA or Psychotic Dictatorship. Your choice though

I could, but I honestly made this based on the WA classification. I'd rather have other opinions as to whether this is even a solid issue concept before I rearrange its guts and bolts. :P

It amuses me.

The options are rather transparently game-mechanical in nature (the first three options are each designed to raise one of the three freedom stats), but since the premise is also game-mechanical, it fits.

This does leave me confused about what the fourth option actually wants to do. How do you show "compassion and integrity" without having civil rights? Does the speaker want to raise welfare funding, or what?

Read the last sentence again.

Interestingly enough, I had an idea (before seeing this) about this for all the extreme classifications (no media). We have one for Anarchy, and there's this. That leaves Left-wing Utopia, Iron Fist Socialists, Benevolent Dictatorship, Free-Market Paradise, Tyranny by Majority, and Corporate Police State. Options would be three each, one each about raising/lowering political, economic, and personal freedoms. But this issue is most appropriate.

Hmm. That's a good question.

Ideally, you'd tell them about the dangers about having much freedom. I tried to say that with the "giving your citizens structure".
The result, I'd think, would mostly be to increase political integrity and compassion, but an excellent question is how.

As a result, I'll put in taxes for welfare and health care. No use explaining it outside the issue if it's something that should be said in the issue, right? :)
(note: I just added a sentence to option 4.)

Another thing about option 4 is the fact that it's only available for nations outside of the world assembly. I'd make it available to all,
but the whole argument is that the WA is corrupt. Another possibility would be to instead have you leave it, or something,
which would be... interesting. Idk, I'll let you guys decide on that one, unless noone takes an interest in that aspect.

Also, Fauxia, I just updated that, so that's why Trotterdam didn't see it.

Don't have another "World Assembly Woes." No kicking out nations.

One problem with simple freedom-based options, especially the civil rights one, as amusing as its effect line is, is that it doesn't specify which freedoms it's giving. That's going to give wonky results in practice, since you would basically need to legalize random stuff in the hopes of raising the stat enough (and some of it might already be legal - even Psychotic Dictatorships don't need absolute zero stats).

The political freedom option is better about this because it makes a clear statement about what it wants to do...

Actually, wait a moment.

It's already possible to be classified as a Psychotic Dictatorship while a democracy. Of course, this means you're an extremely corrupt democracy, probably a one-party state, but still technically a democracy. I recently pulled it off on my test puppet. (Not for long, though. It's a pretty volatile position, where even a small shift can knock you back to Authoritarian Democracy.)

Huh... now you're making me think of an issue for democracies classified as dictatorships...

I should probably specify that this is only for nations that are also dictatorships, then. Also, added new effect lines to options 1 and 3,
and I figured I'd keep it in the same draft 1.1. :P

Liking the premise here. Good idea, using this classification as a validity check.

Hmm. With this option it looks like you're going for that Mises quote about a free-market dictatorship being preferable to a socialist democracy:

Option: "There's no need to go soft on these commoners," proposes @@RANDOMNAME@@, a shady man who you don't exactly recall calling. "Just loosen up the economy a little bit. The World Assembly goes a bit easier on nations that allow business. Lets go ahead and go the right way; legalize some private industry, and my boys will be more than happy to make you proud."
effect: newly allowed private industries are monitored more than the old state industries

Perhaps bring that idea to the fore a little more? I'd also consider your speaker as a character. I'm guessing this guy is based on the Chicago boys, so make them sound like an economist. Would an economist say, for instance, "loosen up the economy a little bit" or "the WA goes a bit easier..."

I think I did pretty good referencing someone I've never heard about without even knowing about it... :lol2:

I was just going for a shady economist guy. Maybe you could help me make this guy more of a reference? :)

I could, but I think it'd help you improve your writing if you had a crack at it first. One of the trickiest things to do is to give your characters a real "voice" of their own. You're making real progress on it though.

I'd suggest referencing the idea that "We'd prefer a free market dictatorship over a socialist democracy" and tidying up the language. Make it more formal. I've explained where you need to do this, and I'm interested to see what you come up with.

Alrighty. I'll see what I can do. Thank you, Caracasus. :)

@voices: Indeed, that's something I've had trouble with, but I must say that even I've noticed at least some improvement in some of my newer drafts. :)
(especially this one in a draft that'll take forever to get uploaded for review because it's low in my queue)

You take on board constructive criticism. Seriously, that's like 90% of getting places when it comes to writing issues! One of these days I plan to drag up the first draft I ever made, just for laughs.

Alrighty, updated it. Hopefully it's better, but if it's not, I'll be more than happy to try again. :p
I also made the options bold and option validity underlined - in other words, I prettied it up. Why? Because I wanted to. :lol2:

You take on board constructive criticism.
Absolutely. I want my issues to be as good as the community can make it. :3c
(the only problem with that happens when there's a divide in opinion. See: pepper spray, vegan carnivores)

What if I required everyone to enter state-arranged marriages?

What if I banned sex?

We can get pretty close to banning adoption, too. (I guess there would still be actual orphans.)

NationStates can be... well, psychotic. :)

In fact, thinking about it, it could be fitting to the issue to deliberately have most of the speakers doing something illegal, to highlight how restrictive your nation is. Just change it to "illegitimate husband" and you're done!

Genius! Added something to each option.

1) combing your hair against your will and the law
2) illegitimate husband
3) Chivelandian(based off of Chile; new nations are alright, right?) arms smuggler
4) moving away from her mother though she's not allowed to
5) criminally-minded.

Idk if that works, but removing a minute's work isn't going to hurt me any.

I love this one.

Jutsa wrote:your sister, who your mother is now combing the hair of and leaning away even though she's not allowed to.
This one is unreadable, though, and would be too much of a rehash even if it were cleaned up.

Jutsa wrote:your niece's illegitimate husband, who hates everyone in your family and was sent instead of your niece who you actually wanted to speak with.
So, actually, he hates everyone in my family? Or just everyone except my niece?

Jutsa wrote:3) Chivelandian(based off of Chile; new nations are alright, right?) arms smuggler
Of the current nations, I think Manamana would be a good base for smuggling operations, but there's no reason we can't have a new nation.

Jutsa wrote:5) criminally-minded.
"Criminally-minded" is too vague to be interesting.

I actually think this one would work as the token character who isn't breaking any laws, since he's the pro-law speaker (...though option 4 also is, and holds the "non-evil oppression" viewpoint, so maybe that should be the non-hypocritical one).

Or else give him a crime that's related to the "law", like forging your signature on a piece of new legislation. (Actually, don't we already have that somewhere? It sounds oddly familiar. *looks up* Hmm, nope, I can't find it.) No, wait. That would be illegal even in sane countries.
