What could possibly go wrong? (chances are I'll forget all about this and/or become super lazy, so I'm adding a date-counter to the title.)
Copy/pasted this from this one. Any suggestions as to new national appearances are welcome!
A note before the boxes:
Candlewhisper Archive wrote:Of note though to writers: don't feel constrained by how nations have been depicted before. It's the writing that determines what these nations are, so each time you write about them you add to their lore. Skandilund doesn't have to be Scandinavian in every way, and Dàguó doesn't have to be Chinese in every way. For my own part, I've always felt Brancaland has elements of the USA to it as well, while the United Federation isn't exactly the USA either. For example, when I was doing How To Examine Your Testees I was mentally visualising the United Federation as a USA where the South won - more of a Confederate States, with an attitude that is more fiercely libertarian and macho, where men are men, and men carry guns and believe in Jay-sus. But there's no reason it has to look like that in your head when you write. So long as writing makes the place more interesting, and as long as it doesn't contradict what goes before, then you're adding to the tapestry of nation depiction with each mention.
↑ Remember that this is more of an archive, showing basic existing lore and what nations currently exist. Feel free to expand upon them as you wish, and don't be afraid to add a new member to the family, as said here:
FAQ: Can I make new NPC nations? Answer:
Trotterdam wrote:Yes. Most of them were originally made by players (except the few from the original Max Barry issues). Usually we prefer to use an existing NPC nation that matches our needs, where possible, but there's no rule against coming up with a new one if you feel none of the existing ones are quite right. There are several NPC nations that only appear in one or a few issues.
Enjoy!
Nations:
@@NAME@@: This usually means your nation. However, there's another nation in #1302: The @@NAME@@ Identity halfway across the world which renames itself to @@NAME@@, as well.
Albionia: A neighboring island nation whose drivers drive the opposite side of the road from your nation's. Possibly NS's analogue for England (seeing as "Albion" was the archaic name of Great Britain).

Aldoustan: First appearing in #1219: Vat Is a Serious Problem, Aldoustan apparently keeps its vat-grown citizens calm by using narcotics.

Althaniq: Althaniq, first showing up in issue #863: Oiling the Wheels of Diplomacy, is a small, autocratic nation that supplies oil to your nation in exchange for importing most of its goods from you. However, they're not very well liked by most other nations - particularly Brancaland. Althaniq is heavily based on Qatar, with its name based on the House of Thani, which has ruled it. It also has a stable airline in your nation, as seen in issue #747(added after 909): The Plane Truth. It quite possibly shares borders with Marche Noire. It is also a fairly conservative nation, quite possibly works with AI, and has nuclear weapons testing.

Ausblic: Named after Australian Republic, (in)famous for gifting new - and old - issue writers with fruit baskets, Ausblic's is first seen gifting you 5,000 fruit baskets. It is apparently an agricultural nation. It is also probably an analogue for Australia (though it could, hypothetically, be Austria... you never know!)
Demonym: ??? | Demonymplural: ??? | Demonymadjective: Ausblickese
Ausonia: First appearing in #1193: Relocating the Living Room, Ausonia is a nation with a very small military that you've discussed invading for more land for your nation. A lot. It's probably a reference to Austria.
Demonym: ??? | Demonymplural: ??? | Demonymadjective: ??? [probably Ausonian lets be honest]
Barria: Unknown. Either a past or present nation, had a princess whose descendant is to become very influential in one issue. Could be short for "Max Barry-a".
Demonym: ??? | Demonymplural: ??? | Demonymadjective: ??? [probably Barrian lets be honest]
Bigtopia: There are many Bigtopian immigrants in your country, who face all manner of discrimination from your country as well as Tasmania, Lilliputia, and East Lebatuck, discrimination which they frequently protest. One prominent Bigtopian, Nicholas Condor, called for the extermination of your people. Bigtopia has cheaper labor than your country, leading to outsourcing from your country to theirs. Bigtopia had a dictatorial regime led by the mass-murdering "Butcher of Bigtopia", also known as Lee Terallihitlah, but this regime was overthrown by revolutionaries. Several issues relate to relatives of this crimelord.
Bigtopia harbors anti-government activists from your country, leading to military tensions. The nation also shares a major river with you, and are downstream from your nation.
Issue #860 reveals that your nation has in fact gone to war with Bigtopia, at one point, and the effect lines in 377.1 and 358.3 also seem to suggest that you may presently be at war with them. According to issue #1000, three of the five speakers claim that Bigtopia is your most trusted friend and ally, although speakers 4 and 5 seem to say otherwise.
"Bigwig" is apparently a racial slur against Bigtopians.North Bigtopia: North Bigtopia and Maxtopia are historic enemies, leading to clashes between Maxtopian and Bigtopian immigrants. They eventually try to make peace in issue #877.Demonym: Bigtopian | Demonymplural: Bigtopians | Demonymadjective: Bigtopian
Outer Bigtopia: Spies on your country with an agent named "Solo".
Blackacre: A nation with chilly relations with your country, to the extent that Blackacre sent agents to assassinate you. One of their agents, Ussa Maddox, is the alleged nemesis of your country's least-reliable spy, Crazy Boris, who blames Maddox for sinking one of your navy's vessels. Blackacre had fracking operations which lead to earthquakes in their country. Blackacre's leader seems to be an aggressive dictator named Valeria Drake, who hurls threats at foreign leaders from her Twitcher account and seems to have many similarities with Donald Trump. They also seem to have some ties with Violetism.
They apparently are known for rigging elections in other nationstates — including yours, as seen in #936.
Rumor has it they might be an analogue for a Dystopian future America.

Brancaland: Brancaland is basically Canada.
It's a stable, richly-cultured nation, known for its multilingual policies, is rich in culture and multilingual, and is a popular tourist destination among your citizens.
@@NAME@@'s citizens apparently like to retire there (if they can leave the country), even if it's very cold, as seen in issue #650.
Also seen in #650, it's one of the few nations that your nation gets along with - and even then, they can be a little pushy at times.
As of #915, Brancaland's prime minister is known as Dustin Wiseau.
Brancaland has thriving wood and film exports industries. As such, the nation is apparently sometimes known as Branchaland. It is also extremely obsessed with maple syrup (so basically Canada).
Issue #1163 states they have a two-party system that gets into gridlock. #1212 suggests there's a province named Northern Brancaland.
Fun fact: It has a province called Quaybeck, which is in the middle of a violent separatist movement, instigated by @@NAME@@ extremists, as seen in #650,
which is probably based off of how Quebec in Canada has, in fact, had a couple of referendums for whether or not it should leave the country.
Fun fact: Their capital is Maxhoover, a shotty mix of Vancouver and Max Barry.

Brasilistan: A diamond producing nation known for abducting its citizens children as well as people from Marche Noire, which it neighbors. The abduction of tourists from your country leads to an international incident which can go many different directions. Their civil rights abuses (and your war, if you had it) are referenced in many other issues.West Brasilistan: Unknown if this is an independent nation or a part of Brasilistan. Regardless, it's in a state of turmoil.Demonym: Brasilistani? | Demonymplural: Basilistanis / Brasilistani | Demonymadjective: Brasilistani / Brasilistan
Copiluaca: First appearing in issue #1185: Should Be Sufficient, Copiluaca (a reference to this) is a nation dependent on goods from your nation in exchange for coffee. There is some debate as to whether Copiluaca is different from a historic nation with the same borders which was also referred to as Copiluaca, although most argue this was a trick performed to get out of crushing debt.
Demonym: Copiluacan | Demonymplural: Copiluacans | Demonymadjective: Copiluacan
Dàguó: Dàguó is believed to be based off of China (both modern and old), particularly with its one-child policy, strict educational system, having a substantial trade system with your nation despite having chilly relations possibly due to a culture that's different from yours in many ways, having a historical version of itself called the "Dàmíng" dynesty, and having a breakaway province wanting international recognition. Dàguó is also a theocracy, ruled by the "Celestial Emperor".New Dàguó: Being a breakaway province of Dàguó, New Dàguó is most likely based off of Taiwan, having a democratic government and engaging in economic warfare with Dàguó.Demonym: Dàguóren?| Demonymplural: Dàguóren? | Demonymadjective: Dàguó
The Despojanbourg Republic: First appearing in issue #1087, Despojanbourg is an authoritarian dictatorship — and an ally both fiercely in love with your nation and integral to your nation's security. However, like many dictatorships, there are pro-democracy movements throughout the nation...

East Lebatuck: The East Lebatuckese have been accused of discriminating against Bigtopians. East Lebatuck has a space program as well as a satellite in orbit named "Sputnak," which seems to suggest that East Lebatuck is becoming a representation of the Soviet Union, at least regarding the space race. This is further backed up by their rather socialist and conservative policies. It may or may not be infiltrating Marche Noire, although it's said in issue #1283: Comrade, Please! that they prefer economic solidarity over international confrontation. It's also hinted in #1281: The Not-So-Worldwide Web that they might have sentient AI, and in the MADness chain that its chairman is (at least at the time) Joseph Rushev.Imperial Lebatuck: What East Lebatuck used to be prior to the "revolution", presumably a socialist uprising. Galliennes: Almost certainly France. First appearing in issue #1175: Can I Borrow a Word?, your nation's language has had a good number of loan words from this nation's tongue, also known as Galliennais (which is basically French). Little else is known about them, although they seem to be a small enough nation to be bombed to the ground by yours, further hinting at them being a smaller part of France (presumably "Gaul").
Demonym: ??? | Demonymplural: ??? | Demonymadjective: Galliennais
Gallopavia: Gallopavia first appears in issue #881: Blooming Out of Proportion. Little is known about this nation, except that it has a bloated potted gladioli market whose bubble many fear could pop at any time. It has been postulated as a cross between the Netherlands and Turkey, with the flower bubble being representative of Dutch tulips while the name Gallopavia means "Turkey" in Latin.

Haptu: Haptu's first appearance is in #1034, and appears to be a tropical island nation that has undergone various economic and political revolutions, as indicated by 1034. It is used as a pawn for global powers, with communists and capitalists fighting for power through Haptu's government. Nothing else is known about this nation.

Lilliputia: Home of the Lilliputian immigrants. They believe your country has occupied their homeland, and funds terrorist attacks against you. Lilliputia has been accused of discriminating against Bigtopians. Lilliputia is home of the Giant Lilliputian rabbit. Mr. Marple, a world-renown private investigator, is from this country.
Lilliputia is probably a reference to Lilliput in Gulliver's Travels. Marche Blanche: Marche Blanche is the arch enemy and, essentially, the polar opposite of Marche Noire. Despite being neighbors with Marche Noire, Marche Blanche is on friendly terms with your nation. Several issues involve disputes between the two nations.
Fun fact: Marche Blanche was formerly known as "Marche Blanc" until early April, 2019.
Demonym: ??? | Demonymplural: ??? | Demonymadjective: ???
Marche Noire: Another country whose citizens immigrate to yours, Marche Noire is on the brink of a "terrible and violent civil war". After this civil war occurs, Marche Noire overthrows their oppressive monarchy, but elects a government opposed to your country. Despite their political instability, the Marche Noirians have a good economy, producing a lot of cars and agricultural products such as rice. They have tensions with neighboring Brasilistan. Marche Noire's leader is the authoritarian Otto Kratt. Marche Noire also exports wine.
Fun fact: Marche Noire was, in most instances, known as "Marche Noir" until late February, 2018.

Maxtopia: Maxtopia is a nation with a long history, stretching back to the often-referenced "Ancient Maxtopians", such as King Maxbari IV. There are many Maxtopian immigrants in your nation, and they provide a lot of electricity and oil to your country. Maxtopia and North Bigtopia are historic enemies, but try to make peace in issue #877. This country has been described as "scenic, yet corrupt and totalitarian", secular, having high tariffs, and executing people for carrying drugs such as "Maxtopian Grass". Maxtopia also has undergone a civil war or two, one of which involves the religious Violetists, who make up a majority in the country. It is the home of the wood-eating spikeball and the dreaded Maxtopian hornet. It apparently has tariffs on sheep and a thriving shrimp industry, along with probably being the owners of Maxay Pacific Airlines. Acording to issue #1446, ancient Maxtopia used to use hieroglyphs without punctuation, suggesting it's an ancient civilization (the nation is likely heavily inspired by the Middle East and Egypt). It's also apparently a bit war-torn but that's fine.
Demonym: Maxtopian | Demonymplural: Maxtopians | Demonymadjective: Maxtopian
Merovingia: Little is known about this nation, except that, as of its first appearance in issue #922, it has chocolate cake that drives women crazy.
Yeah, you read this right. It's based on the Matrix movie, hence its first appearance. It could hypothetically represent old or modern France, albeit that title is more in line with Galliennes, and it is more likely to represent Belgium, given that's the area the irl Merovingians came from, as well as their fame for chocolates. It's also hinted in issue #1281: The Not-So-Worldwide Web that they might have sentient AI, further giving a subtle hint at the Matrix theme. Issue #1455 has a speaker who's an executive from "Merovingian Minolta".

Demonym: ??? | Demonymplural: ??? | Demonymadjective: ???
Núi Và Sông: Introduced in issue #871: It's Not Easy Being Red, Núi Và Sông, or "mountains and rivers" in Vietnamese, is probably based off of Vietnam. They have a mostly socialist economy with small amounts of capitalism, although they are still fiercely anti-capitalist and have a distinctly aggressive relationship with the hyper-capitalist United Federation.
Demonym: ??? | Demonymplural: ??? | Demonymadjective: ???

Demonym: Oogaboogalander | Demonymplural: ??? | Demonymadjective: ???
Prudenlund: Introduced in issue #1097: What Do We Do With a Drunken Sailor?, Prudenlund is an ally of your nation, and a trading partner (if you're not an autarky). They have ports on the water, though it's not clear if these are river or sea ports. Evidently, they have a very low crime rate. They are likely based on Denmark.
Demonym: Prudenlundian | Demonymplural: Prudenlundians | Demonymadjective: Prudenlandian
Qaanpaluk: As described in its first issue appearance (#980: Small Claims) as a mysterious, but wealthy, nation made of a series of frozen islands. It appears to be named after two places in Greenland, very close to the island referenced in #980.
Demonym: ??? | Demonymplural: ??? | Demonymadjective: ???
Romulan: Uncertain. Only mentioned in #1527: God Save The Queens in its demonymadjective form, "Romulan". It seems to be a reference to irl Romans, although is probably also a Star Trek reference.
Sacerdia: A theocratic nation long at war with another nation and tries to ally you in issue #1240: Unadmirable Zeal. Appears to be in a region with neighboring nationstates that are often fascist and theocratic dictatorships. They themselves execute people who do not follow their national religion, as well as arrest homosexuals.
Demonym: Sacerdian | Demonymplural: Sacerdians | Demonymadjective: Sacerdian
Sakura: It is unknown if this is even a nation or not, although its (presumed) demonymadjective is mentioned once in #1397: [MADness] On @@LEADER@@’s Secret Service, and it's suggested it may be an analogue to Japan (given the name). Absolutely nothing is known about them.
Demonym: Sakuran | Demonymplural: Sakurans | Demonymadjective: Sakuran
San Vitenzo: A small, socialist nation off the coast of the United Federation (almost undoubtedly an analogue for Cuba), run by a president-for-life named "Doc" Moreno. The nation was first introduced in the MADness issue chain, requesting you set up nukes around their nation (if you're socialist), or being a rival you must sabotage (if you're capitalist). It is revealed in the same chain to be nearby to your nation - if you're capitalist. However, it is on the "other side of the world" if you're socialist. This suggests that San Vitenzo either has multiple pieces, the Region mover tool is more powerful than we once thought, or, more likely, the story just changes depending on what power you're playing as. Its capital city is established as Granfalloon.
Demonym: San Vitenzan | Demonymplural: San Vitenzans | Demonymadjective: San Vitenzan
Savoiia: Its first appearance was in issue #1004: Two Countries and a Baby. The theocratic government officially granted a baby in your nation, one with significant health defects and sentenced to euthanasia, was granted citizenship to allow the baby to be taken by "Our Great Parent". Its name is from Savoy, a duchy of Italy/France. Savoiia is meant to be similar to the Vatican — though larger (may also be an analogue to Italy), and is a neighbor to your nation.
Demonym: ??? | Demonymplural: ??? | Demonymadjective: Savoiian
Skandilund: Skandilund, which is probably based off of Scandinavia, seems to be a progressive nation, where laws are viewed more as "guidelines", as seen in 774.1's effect line. They are fairly technologically advanced, as seen in issue #928, and also fairly wealthy, as seen in #938, whereby they'd love to help other nations out — at a bit of an arrogant price. They also have apparently been playfully feuding with your nation over a frozen island named Hanshedrik, referencing the feud between Canada and Denmark, further backed by their gifting you danishes. Skandilund's prime minister is established in the MADness series as Anders Anderson.
Saunas are apparently popular in Skandilund, and some of the best come from there. They also have days of 24-hour sunlight and darkness.
Demonym: Skand | Demonymplural: Skands | Demonymadjective: Skandilundian
Smalltopia: Despite seeming similar to Bigtopia, Smalltopia is anything but. It seems to have several east European influence, although is perhaps most similar to Germany - which is reinforced by its appearance in the MADness issue chain, where it's also established that east Lebatuck is its nearest neighbor. It is in this same chain that it is established that Smalltopia's leader (at least at the time) is Chancellor Kurt Zahmahkibo.
Demonym: Smalltopian | Demonymplural: Smalltopians | Demonymadjective: Smalltopian
South Nobovindia: Little is known about them except that some of their people are accused of crossing the border to attack cattle ranchers. As their people are referred to as "Nobovindians", it's hard to tell if South Nobovindia is the only Nobovindia, or if there are two conflicting countries and "Nobovindia" was used as a catch-all term.
Demonym: (South?) Nobovindian | Demonymplural: South Nobividians | Demonymadjective: ??? (Probably [South] Nobovindian)

Tasmania: An ethnicity known for colorful tribal attire, there are many Tasmanian immigrants from your country, probably fleeing frequent civil wars. One of their revered cultural icons is a place called Lake Sacred.
Demonym: Tasmanian | Demonymplural: Tasmanians | Demonymadjective: Tasmanian
Tiquitaca: A nation that eats guinea pigs that has several Tiquitacan restaurants throughout your nation. It is based off of Peru, which does serve guinea pig (cuy) as food. It is also a reference to Lake Titicaca, which lies between Bolivia and Peru, and is also a reference to a British radio comedy series 'The Goon Show' in which "Titicaca" is a mentioned country.
Demonym: Tiquitacan | Demonymplural: Tiquitacans | Demonymadjective: Tiquitacan
United Federation: Known for capitalism, business-run schools, excessive campaigning, distaste for the government, and tall skyscrapers. Its ambassador wears an over-sized stetson and opens a bottle of beer with a .44 magnum, and claims that it's a very liberty-loving nation. Sometimes just called "The Federation", it's probably based off of the United States, as if you couldn't tell from the rest of this description, or by the fact that they'll charge into your nation dramatically with overly-expensive military gadgets to hunt down suspected terrorists. It is established in the MADness issue chain that the president is Ken J. Finnedy.
Demonym: ??? (Probably Federal) | Demonymplural: Federals | Demonymadjective: UF

The Wezeltonians claim sovereignty over these islands even though your colonists have lived there for generations, and are willing to invade them to seize the territory. They're also willing to construct islands in order to claim more territory, such as in the Maxxi Sea in #1416: Building on Sand. They also grow coffee beans.

Unnamed Nations:

Neighboring nations in general are also sometimes referenced in issues.
I should also note that occasionally, @@REGION@@-specific nations or groups thereof are also mentioned. (Note: Your homeregion's mentioned far more often)

In Issue #1340: Unnatural Conception, the speaker of option 6 (shown as the fifth option) is the ambassador of an unpronounceable country beginning with an X and ending with a Y" (which I shall personally call "Xyzzy" in reference to Wonderland Adventures). This is most likely a one-off chromosome joke. However, it should be noted that the person has a thick, stereotypically German accent, and advocates for women to have lots of babies and for the state to provide preferential treatment for them.
One easter egg issue mentions several nations which are parodies off of the XKCD map; more specifically,

Uoeq (UO and EQ; Ultima Online and Everquest. Fact: They're actually to the east whereas NS claims they're in the west.)
Sekonlif (Second Life)
These were explained in slightly more detail with their update's report here.
