List of Nations & Tribes (Sept. 14, 2017 — Nov. 17, 2023)

Postby Jutsa » Wed Sep 13, 2017 11:06 pm

Welp, time for me to take the reins, I guess. :lol2:

What could possibly go wrong? (chances are I'll forget all about this and/or become super lazy, so I'm adding a date-counter to the title.)

Copy/pasted this from this one. Any suggestions as to new national appearances are welcome!

A note before the boxes:
Candlewhisper Archive wrote:Of note though to writers: don't feel constrained by how nations have been depicted before. It's the writing that determines what these nations are, so each time you write about them you add to their lore. Skandilund doesn't have to be Scandinavian in every way, and Dàguó doesn't have to be Chinese in every way. For my own part, I've always felt Brancaland has elements of the USA to it as well, while the United Federation isn't exactly the USA either. For example, when I was doing How To Examine Your Testees I was mentally visualising the United Federation as a USA where the South won - more of a Confederate States, with an attitude that is more fiercely libertarian and macho, where men are men, and men carry guns and believe in Jay-sus. But there's no reason it has to look like that in your head when you write. So long as writing makes the place more interesting, and as long as it doesn't contradict what goes before, then you're adding to the tapestry of nation depiction with each mention.

↑ Remember that this is more of an archive, showing basic existing lore and what nations currently exist. Feel free to expand upon them as you wish, and don't be afraid to add a new member to the family, as said here:

FAQ: Can I make new NPC nations? Answer:
Trotterdam wrote:Yes. Most of them were originally made by players (except the few from the original Max Barry issues). Usually we prefer to use an existing NPC nation that matches our needs, where possible, but there's no rule against coming up with a new one if you feel none of the existing ones are quite right. There are several NPC nations that only appear in one or a few issues.

Enjoy! :D

Althaniq: Althaniq, first showing up in issue #863: Oiling the Wheels of Diplomacy, is a small, autocratic nation that supplies oil to your nation in exchange for importing most of its goods from you. However, they're not very well liked by most other nations - particularly Brancaland. Althaniq is heavily based on Qatar, with its name based on the House of Thani, which has ruled it. It also has a stable airline in your nation, as seen in issue #747(added after 909): The Plane Truth. It quite possibly shares borders with Marche Noire. It is also a fairly conservative nation, quite possibly works with AI, and has nuclear weapons testing.

Bigtopia: There are many Bigtopian immigrants in your country, who face all manner of discrimination from your country as well as Tasmania, Lilliputia, and East Lebatuck, discrimination which they frequently protest. One prominent Bigtopian, Nicholas Condor, called for the extermination of your people. Bigtopia has cheaper labor than your country, leading to outsourcing from your country to theirs. Bigtopia had a dictatorial regime led by the mass-murdering "Butcher of Bigtopia", also known as Lee Terallihitlah, but this regime was overthrown by revolutionaries. Several issues relate to relatives of this crimelord.
Bigtopia harbors anti-government activists from your country, leading to military tensions. The nation also shares a major river with you, and are downstream from your nation.
Issue #860 reveals that your nation has in fact gone to war with Bigtopia, at one point, and the effect lines in 377.1 and 358.3 also seem to suggest that you may presently be at war with them. According to issue #1000, three of the five speakers claim that Bigtopia is your most trusted friend and ally, although speakers 4 and 5 seem to say otherwise.
"Bigwig" is apparently a racial slur against Bigtopians.
North Bigtopia: North Bigtopia and Maxtopia are historic enemies, leading to clashes between Maxtopian and Bigtopian immigrants. They eventually try to make peace in issue #877.

One of their agents, Ussa Maddox, is the alleged nemesis of your country's least-reliable spy, Crazy Boris, who blames Maddox for sinking one of your navy's vessels. Blackacre had fracking operations which lead to earthquakes in their country. Blackacre's leader seems to be an aggressive dictator named Valeria Drake, who hurls threats at foreign leaders from her Twitcher account and seems to have many similarities with Donald Trump. They also seem to have some ties with Violetism.
They apparently are known for rigging elections in other nationstates — including yours, as seen in #936.

Brancaland: Brancaland is basically Canada.
It's a stable, richly-cultured nation, known for its multilingual policies, is rich in culture and multilingual, and is a popular tourist destination among your citizens.
@@NAME@@'s citizens apparently like to retire there (if they can leave the country), even if it's very cold, as seen in issue #650.
Also seen in #650, it's one of the few nations that your nation gets along with - and even then, they can be a little pushy at times.
As of #915, Brancaland's prime minister is known as Dustin Wiseau.
Brancaland has thriving wood and film exports industries. As such, the nation is apparently sometimes known as Branchaland. It is also extremely obsessed with maple syrup (so basically Canada).
Issue #1163 states they have a two-party system that gets into gridlock. #1212 suggests there's a province named Northern Brancaland.
Fun fact: It has a province called Quaybeck, which is in the middle of a violent separatist movement, instigated by @@NAME@@ extremists, as seen in #650,
which is probably based off of how Quebec in Canada has, in fact, had a couple of referendums for whether or not it should leave the country.

Fun fact: Their capital is Maxhoover, a shotty mix of Vancouver and Max Barry.

The abduction of tourists from your country leads to an international incident which can go many different directions. Dàguó is also a theocracy, ruled by the "Celestial Emperor".

There are many Maxtopian immigrants in your nation, and they provide a lot of electricity and oil to your country. Maxtopia and North Bigtopia are historic enemies, but try to make peace in issue #877. This country has been described as "scenic, yet corrupt and totalitarian", secular, having high tariffs, and executing people for carrying drugs such as "Maxtopian Grass". Maxtopia also has undergone a civil war or two, one of which involves the religious Violetists, who make up a majority in the country. It is the home of the wood-eating spikeball and the dreaded Maxtopian hornet. It apparently has tariffs on sheep and a thriving shrimp industry, along with probably being the owners of Maxay Pacific Airlines. Acording to issue #1446, ancient Maxtopia used to use hieroglyphs without punctuation, suggesting it's an ancient civilization (the nation is likely heavily inspired by the Middle East and Egypt). It's also apparently a bit war-torn but that's fine.

In Issue #1340: Unnatural Conception, the speaker of option 6 (shown as the fifth option) is the ambassador of an unpronounceable country beginning with an X and ending with a Y" (which I shall personally call "Xyzzy" in reference to Wonderland Adventures). This is most likely a one-off chromosome joke. However, it should be noted that the person has a thick, stereotypically German accent, and advocates for women to have lots of babies and for the state to provide preferential treatment for them.

One easter egg issue mentions several nations which are parodies off of the XKCD map; more specifically,
#266 Easter Egg: Breaching the Great Fourth Wall of @@NAME@@. (See NationStates southeast of MMO Isle.) The nations are:
Stalclaft (resource-rich war zone; named after Starcraft II)
Cea-Dicee (military superpower with spaceships; CDC Games, also referencing Eve Online which has a partnership)
Subspais (ancient ruins; named after Subspace which, in fact, is underwater)
Uoeq (UO and EQ; Ultima Online and Everquest. Fact: They're actually to the east whereas NS claims they're in the west.)
Sekonlif (Second Life)
These were explained in slightly more detail with their update's report here.

Tribes:
Tribe of all life: Probably just references life, but I'm adding it anyways. Appears in #633: Sound Judgement

In #1278: A Textbook Cover-Up?, a massacre that nearly wiped out an aboriginal tribe in your nation was kept out of a history book.

Note: This may not be every nation or every occurrence. Furthermore, I only add to the list what's posted onto Drasnia's list of issues. I hope you enjoy! :)

OK, joking aside, thank you for compiling/updating this beautiful list.

Dàguó has been a little more fleshed out since this list was compiled.

It appears to have a strict education system, based on learning by rote. (#668 How To Examine Your Testees)

Relations between your nation and Dàguó are chilly at best, with Dàguó appearing very different from your nation in many respects. (#610 Only @@LEADER@@ Could Go To Dàguó and #675: Trick Or Treaty). In spite of chilly relations, there is substantial trade between your nation and Dàguó, as well as the potential to support New Dàguó, a breakaway province. (Issue #808 Big Trouble In Little Dàguó)

New Dàguó. Little known about this new breakaway province, except that they recently gained independence and ask for formal recognition. It seems they seized power through a revolution of some sort, and claim to hold democratic elections. Dàguó has threatened military action against them, and is engaged in economic warfare against them. (Issue #808 Big Trouble In Little Dàguó)

Mostly fixed it up! I still need to alphabeticalize things, but I don't have enough time atm.

Also, I couldn't find Skandilund in 774... it was, instead, Thalassean? :?

I thought that 'Macronesia' was supposed to be Indonesia rather than Micronesia?

I mean, it might be. I just assumed Micronesia because it sounds a lot like Micronesia,
though Indonesia's certainly larger and probably more well-known. I'll add it as a possible origin until confirmation. :P

Yeah, this. It's easier to search issues when they're all in one place.

Bears Armed wrote:I thought that 'Macronesia' was supposed to be Indonesia rather than Micronesia?
Currently, it's nowhere. The issue doesn't make any references to what the place is like, as the only Macronesians in the scenario are immigrants who are more concerned with being minorities in their current nation than with where they came from.

The author did admit to having intended it to be Indonesia, but since the other issue he tried to use the name in which was more directly based on Indonesia had the name removed in editing, it's not currently canon.

I think all we can say for reasonable certain is the Macronesia is an archipelago of some sort, possibly with larger islands than Micronesia.

Indeed. After getting massively triggered by the Haze crisis, I intended for the 'unnamed' nation to be Indonesia Macronesia.

That being said, it does seem to be the analogue for Russia, which is definitely cold, so it's hard to be certain.

I was talking about the real-life countries. Also, see below.

Jutsa wrote:That being said, it does seem to be the analogue for Russia, which is definitely cold, so it's hard to be certain.
It's a political analogue for the Socialist Soviet Republics, using a similar brand of socialism (which is really pretty different from the liberal/socialist politics of Canada and Scandinavian countries), but I've always pictured it as being smaller and not a proper superpower like the USSR was (or should that be "like the USSR were"?).

Geographically I tend to associate it with the lesser Soviet Union members like Ukraine... which might be a little parochial of me, since those places are in East Europe but not in the east of their own cultural sphere. But that would be not as cold as actual Russia.

Internationally I imagine a situation similar to East Germany, North Vietnam, or North Korea, with West Lebatuck (which has never actually appeared) being the holdout of the original Lebatuckese government, while East Lebatuck split off by communist revolution but couldn't seize the whole country.

Blackacre instead takes has a relation with player nations that resembles the US-USSR Cold War spy drama, but the tension is never explicitly over economic policies.

However, East Lebatuck's importance has grown since several issues established it to be a major player in outer space, like the USSR was (fun fact: the Soviets were ahead of the US for much of the space race... the US just like to advertise the moon landings because that was the one thing they were clearly first on), and at least one of those issues also brings in spy drama (even if your own nation is also communist and should be friendlier with them).

Eventually exports their war crimes via mercenaries. But also having a rich history with their own language, poetry, art, and archaeological artifacts. Though that rich history included gladiatorial games - in ancient times, they've probably outgrown it. Appears to be an important oil-producing nation. #551 allows a royal intermarriage. Oh, and some nasty wildlife.)

This is probably not a complete list.

One easter egg issue mentions several nations which are actual player-created nations in the game, rather than the usual placeholders.
#266 Easter Egg: Breaching the Great Fourth Wall of @@NAME@@
Stalclaft (resource-rich war zone)
Cea-Dicee (military superpower with spaceships)
Subspais (ancient ruins)
It also mentions the islands of Uoeq and Sekonlif.
(Sedgistan reports those nations were created after the issue was added, and so are not an intentional reference to certain players.)

Maxtopia now has tariffs on sheep, and East Lebatuck may or may not actually be infiltrating Marche Noir. (EDIT: This was current when this was first posted, it's no longer the latest news.)

There is an increasing trend for NPC nations to be based on specific real-life nations. Brancaland having a province named Quaybeck really doesn't leave any room for subtlety.
Bigtopia: generic sub-Saharan Africa
Lilliput(ia): N/A (generic third-world backwater, but probably of a different flavor than Bigtopia)
Smalltopia: N/A
Tasmania: N/A (not like Australia in most respects, despite the name)
East Lebatuck: N/A (communist, with a Soviet-like space program, but not overly Russian, has a history that parallels East Germany or North Korea but is more successful than those nations)
Brancaland: Canada
Maxtopia: the Middle East, particularly feeling like a mashup of Egypt and Saudi Arabia
Marche Noir: N/A (the name's French, but it's not simply France)
Marche Blanc: N/A
Wezeltonia: N/A
Blackacre: N/A (antagonistic superpower, but not specifically communist or capitalist)
Manamana: Central America, both continental and Caribbean (though Manamana itself is explicitly an island nation), including features from Panama, Mexico, and the Cayman Islands
Dàguó: China (though a mixture of the present-day People's Republic and imperial China)
United Federation: the United States of America
Skandilund: unified Scandinavia
Macronesia: TBD (implied intent is Indonesia, issues have yet to be published that utilize this, though the name suggests it is at least an archipelago of fairly large islands)
Moltovea: TBD (name sounds similar to Moldavia/Moldova, a Romanian-speaking country that spent a lot of time under Russian rule, but I wouldn't know how to recognize further real-life references if I saw them - though they're established to be landlocked, which does fit)
Zompaboodaland: tropical Africa (at least that what pygmies make me assume, though there's nothing else known about them - pygmies tribes in real life are almost always from rainforests, at least, though there are some outside Africa)
Althaniq: Middle East, specifically Qatar (more overtly and intentionally from the start than Maxtopia)
Núi Và Sông: Vietnam
East Calypso: generic tropical island nation (not specifically tied to any real-life nation or even ocean yet)
West Calypso: presumably another tropical island nation, or maybe another nation on the same tropical island
Brasilistan: N/A (name alludes to two very different regions of the world, South America and Central Asia, leaving the country deliberately vague)
Ausblic: Australia (but actually based more on one particular NationStates player who happens to be Australian)
Merovingia: N/A (it actually kind of was a real country, but there are no obvious similarities beyond name)
Kawandaland: N/A
Savoiia: N/A
Haptu: generic tropical island nation, probably Caribbean
North Palisade: N/A
South Palisade: N/A

Does this mean I have to update my list..?

I went ahead and added the information about East Lebatuck and Maxtopia(as well as their thriving shrimp industry) and also Skandilund's description.

How on earth I didn't associate Skandilund with Scandinavia...

Skiandilund was explicitly designed to be a Scandinavia analogue, and Daguo to be China. Otherwise identities have been more or less emergent.

Of note though to writers: don't feel constrained by how nations have been depicted before. It's the writing that determines what these nations are, so each time you write about them you add to their lore. Skandilund doesn't have to be Scandinavian in every way, and Daguo doesn't have to be Chinese in every way.

And the United Federation? Don't tell me that wasn't intentional.

Brancaland was established early on to have liberal politics, but until it got a province named Quaybeck and Skandilund was added as a separate nation, it could have just as easily been Sweden as Canada.

Manamana feel like it at least strongly hinted at the general area from the beginning, but evolved as more specific references got added.

Maxtopia was definitely emergent, though, which makes it even more charming how it's managed to carve out a discernable niche for itself anyway.

Candlewhisper Archive wrote:For example, when I was doing How To Examine Your Testees I was mentally visualising the United Federation as a USA where the South won - more of a Confederate States, with an attitude that is more fiercely libertarian and macho, where men are men, and men carry guns and believe in Jay-sus.
So basically, the USA as stereotyped by people outside the USA?

Even the left in the USA can be pretty right from outsiders' perspectives.

I imagine Manamana as the ultimate libertarian paradise, though. While the United Federation talks big about FREEDOM! and DEMOCRACY! but clearly has a government that's strong enough to be worth investing bloated election campaigns into trying to control, while not necessarily giving voters the choices they actually want.
