---
In addition to this thread and the Community Discussion Thread, a Discord channel has been established to further facilitate discussion on the aforementioned topics, as well as an IRC channel on Espernet.
Several II Mentors who focus on MT roleplay are also available to answer questions, either those posted in this thread or addressed to them via telegram. The Mentors are fully willing to offer advice and assistance (you can also contact me, the thread OP).
Rules
There are a few rules that players have to keep in mind while participating in this thread. Firstly, this is not a chat thread, so please keep it to a minimum. Any disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. Please respect your fellow players’ opinions.
The point of this thread is to encourage discourse and improve communication within the MT Community. Lively discussion is both anticipated and encouraged, but please keep things civil and within NationStates Site Rules at all times.
Advertisements for MT regions are permitted in the Community Discussion Thread, provided I am contacted in advance and have given my approval.
Glossary of Used Terminology in the Modern Tech Community
(alphabetical order)
Many of you would probably ask the reason for outlining certain concepts shared among members of the MT community. After all, “Modern Tech” would refer to technologies that are available as of the present day. But there should be consideration that some MTers aren’t aware of such concepts, and so as to inform them of these, this glossary will serve that very purpose.
Alliance - this refers to a treaty agreed upon by certain nation-states, often with the parties pledging to support each other on certain matters. It may be established through bilateral or multilateral treaties.
Hard MT - A brand of MT that consists of a very ”realistic” approach to roleplay, often within the constraints of what exists in the real world.
NS ‘Alliance’ - An alliance that consists of nations from various regions, often consisting of similar ideologies, government types and political goals.
Supranational Organization - An organization that may be not necessarily an alliance, but may consist of nations from various regions.
Closed Roleplaying Group - a group with a shared canon and continuity that is exclusive to members. In the context of MT, this would refer to regions. See also Closed World.
Closed World - a world exclusive to a particular region or group. See also Closed Roleplaying Group.
Intergovernmental Organization - an international body that serves as a forum for dialogue between nation-states. Its membership often includes most if not all nations located in the world. A real life example would be the United Nations.
Left-Right Spectrum - formally known as the Left-Right Political Spectrum, it is the most common method of determining the political position and ideology of a certain individual or political group. Left-wing politics believes that social inequality is an injustice that needs to be solved, while Right-wing politics believes that it is a natural and inevitable part of society.
NS Earth - the in-character world that all open MT regions are assumed to exist in unless otherwise stated (see Closed Roleplaying Group). Players controlling nations within the purview of NS Earth generally have access to unlimited amounts of resources and capital for the state to utilize. See also Open World.
NS Pop - common reference for Nationstates population, in which a nation ICly uses the population figures found on the nation account.
Open World - the region is a part of the greater “NS Earth” and roleplays may exist between members of one MT region and another, assuming both are in open-world regions. See also NS Earth.
Reality Emulation Spectrum - a method of determining how much of the real world an MTer may emulate.
Regional Alliance - an IC alliance that is based upon membership in a given region.
RP Pop - An IC nation population that is decided by the player regardless of what their nation’s “NS Pop” is. Often found in MT regions that value realistic national population figures.
Semi-Open World - also called a Semi-Closed World, is a region that allows roleplay and worldbuilding with nations in other regions provided it does not affect said region beyond the scope of the nation’s canon.
Soft MT - A brand of MT that doesn’t adhere to the pace of development of modern technology in the real world. Instead, existing technologies may be implemented at a desired point in time as long as it is consistent with canon. Compare with Hard MT.
