CORPSGUY725'S BLOG

Hi guys and welcome back to your favorite blog in the multiverse, corpsguy725's blog!

I finally cooled off after my last post so I'm totally ready to talk about the current World Bowl. Because, let's face it, it's cake time. After a snafu with a weird draw, the groups for the World Bowl were redrawn and so I can finally release my totally legit commentary on it and stuff.

So Drawkland, after finally gaining the #1 rank that we've completely deserved for 3 Bowls already, have been placed front and center in Group A of WB33. I'm just gonna walk through our group stage competitors, who we will face twice each. First are the hosts Bongo Johnson. Now, they only recently appeared after a couple cycles' hiatus for whatever but this is still the second time they've hosted, and in a row too. Maybe this adds up to momentum? Idk, they're ranked 33rd and are likely to be walloped by us but you can never count on anything (@Anthor). Next are the Orion Islands, which we sure are good people, but just seem to be another probably irrelevant unranked nation which we'll get easy wins from. Next is Royal Kingdom of Quebec, who haven't been totally on top of things recently but are still regular playoff contenders. Seriously, a team of college players ranked 10th as our Pot 2 team is a real blessing. I expect the games to be hard but we can surely pull them out. I mean, we've beaten much tougher opponents in the past and we're still improving. Next there's Bojikstan, which is an unranked team but appears to have a lot of promise. They have a decent domestic league and it appears that they're coming out guns blazing based on the practice film I managed to pirate on the dark web. Basically they might be challenges, but we'll more than likely pull our games out. Other teams in the group may not be so lucky. I predict the Quebs have a run for their money on Bojiks' part. Then comes Firebolt, the team of sentient broomsticks. Yeah, those guys. EZ win, and ranked 18, they're our Pot 3 team. Honestly what a great group draw. The group rounds off with Sibiandias (I just cnp'd that lol), yet another unranked team who is also likely to get curbstomped by yours truly.

I predict we go 11-1. We have bye days on the last day of the first half and the last day of the group stage. I mean, ideally, we won't have to worry about it, but everybody knows last day byes SUUUUCK. Worst part of this group draw for us imo. Anyway, let's look at the team, shall we? In the offseason I know plenty of our players have been improving or keeping steady in skill, but here's a few that stand out. This footage was pulled from public practice film or friendlies against other Sonnelian national teams (total garbage). I'll just talk about a couple today and a couple tomorrow.

So first of course we have to talk about Jack Hoy. He came in as a rookie the season of World Bowl XXXII and was a last-minute addition to the squad for that tournament. He proved to be a massive boon to the team. He's without a doubt the second-fastest player on the team (we can't all be Daniel Madison), but he's also tiny and elusive. While he's not immune to getting cracked, being a smaller dude, he's still super speedy and goes through the tiniest gaps in players. Oh yeah, and he's started doing this now in practice:

ImageImage

That's right. Hurdling bitches. And I mean that in like a "he's hurdling over bitches" way not like in a "he's hurdling, with bitches as an interjection." Just thought I'd clear that up. Anyway, this kid's career is on the up and up, no lie. Every time he's on the field I swear he's faster. Not only that, but his catching is improving too. He's one desperate coaching decision away from being switched to wide receiver. He is on the shorter side, so it makes sense that he's an RB at least. But when he lines up in the slot in like an empty backfield set he's deadly. So we've got that to look forward to.

Look, running backs don't last very long in this game. It's just a known fact of life. Almost all of them are one injury away from having their whole career shattered. It's not often you have a back with longevity, but when I look at Jack Hoy, I see a guy that will last a long time. He's athletic, he's charismatic, he's a multi-tool (ever seen him throw passes out of the wildcat? A work of art for sure), and he's still young. He may not be able to keep his blazing speed going forever and always, but even if he regresses a bit in the future he'll still be outpacing half the backs in the league. And that's not even thinking on the international stage. Fans from nations at every corner of the multiverse will know the name of Jack Hoy (and probably rue it). Trust me. This guy is special and I can't wait to see what he does next (personally I'd love to see the kid truck the shit out of a corner. That'd be comedy).

Another dude who was quieter last Bowl but will probably make a bigger impact is my man Phillip Tomek. As the starting Left End the last few Bowls and the last few GLD seasons at the Baribone Wyrms, he's been just more of a solid choice rather than a star. But I dunno what happened. Something clicked for this man and suddenly he's a beast. In the space of like 3 friendlies he recorded 5 sacks (one of them was the game that we won 114-0 so take that with a grain of salt, still average a sack per game regardless), 2 forced fumbles, and returned a Leo Cross forced fumble for a touchdown (he was already behind the line too, he probably would've gotten half a sack if Leo didn't strip the ball before the tackle). Here's a close up shot of him after a sack at a home friendly. Sorry I don't have a better one of him in action yet but I'll look around idk.

Anyway, I think this upcoming Bowl we'll see a lot more of a Cross-Tomek tandem. While Tomek is a bit older than Cross and not as rawly talented (Cross is the fastest lineman that I've ever seen play the game), he's still really up and coming on the left side of the line. Or right side, if you're a quarterback (who's about to get sacked). The Grid Corps obviously prides itself on having the most badass pass rush available, and with Tomek beginning to shove past O-linemen more and more, this will only make our defense more powerful. I would say any inexperienced or crappy offensive line we play against this tourney will be having a very bad day when they play us. I can't wait to see all those times that the camera jerks forward like they thought there was a pass but then it has to swoop back so you can see the QB lying flat on his back with two dudes standing over him. Ok that sounded gay but whatever.

So yea I'll talk about some other guys in the coming days. Hopefully I'll be able to get my ticket to Bongo Johnson so I can hit some games. That'd be awesome. Otherwise though, see y'all next post, this is corpsguy725 signing off

A few months before World Bowl XXXIII

If there was anything that Torren would never enjoy about early morning practice, it would be the way that the cold dew would soak into his cleats and make his feet wet for the next two hours. He sighed and bore the squishing of the wet grass under his feet as he carried his pads, fingers through his facemask, pushed up through the neck hole on the shoulderpads towards the practice field. The veteran fullback was used to being one of the first players to arrive for practice, especially during two-a-days, but today he found that he was solidly in the middle of the pack, with twenty or so others milling about in the faint dawn light.

Tormundsunn walked over towards a trio of players, the team's three tight-ends, veterans all. The elder two were true tight-ends: the towering Godwyn Braanur had a little bit of gray starting to fleck his brown hair and his closely-trimmed beard, even though he was still only in his early thirties, and he had a veteran canniness that complemented surprising quickness and, of course, his massive hands and long arms. He bestowed a positively-beatific smile on Torren as he approached. The second old-hand, Junn Lindstrom, was a year younger than Godwyn, but seemed to have miles-less wear on him. Their two-inch height differential made a difference: Braanur looked slightly rangy, despite being heavier, while Lindstrom looked a little sturdier. He gave Torren a nod and a smaller smile.

And then, grinning like a maniac through a thick beard, was the third and youngest tight-end. Udun Jaarlsunn had been with the team a few years already himself, and, while splitting the difference in height between Godwyn and Junn, was clearly meant for something different. Where Godwyn was built like a larger receiver, and Junn like a more solid version of Godwyn, Jaarlsunn was built like a brick house, a solid ten pounds heavier than either of them. That was no accident. Udun, despite being listed as a tight-end, also played fullback, just like Torren. Sure, Udun was occasionally asked to haul in the odd pass here or there, but, like Torren, his main job was to hit people.

"Torren!" Udun roared cheerfully. "I see you heard the good news, too! Here nice and early to meet the new coach!" Torren, for his part, nodded, but, small smile aside, kept his expression more neutral. The news of Coach Olafsunn's resignation had been a shock to many on the team, and given how the last head coaching change had turned out, he was more than a little concerned that the Allamunnic Sporting Commission would once more manage to step in it.

That was when he noticed something odd: Coach Olafsunn, walking out onto the field, looking more than a little exasperated. He waved, at the team, who had, in the intervening minutes, been joined by the rest of the missing players, who almost without exception dropped their pads and walked over towards their supposedly-former coach. As they approached Olafsunn, there were murmurs of confusion. Hadn't he resigned?

"Alright, alright, I know this is weird," Olafsunn said somewhat gruffly. "Frankly, I was looking forward to sleeping in a bit this year," he explained, cracking a small grin, "but the new coach begged me to stay on as offensive coordinator. So... surprise!" he laughed. Torren gave a relieved sigh. Whoever the new coach was could not be that bad if they had asked Olafsunn to stay on as a coordinator, unorthodox though such a move was. "The new guy's going to be out in just a moment." There was the purring of a golf cart motor, behind the group, and Olafsunn corrected himself. "Actually, there he is now. Ladies, gentlemen, say hello to your new head coach.

The golf cart pulled up on the practice field sideline, and a slightly-heavyset figure got up from it, beaming. He looked like he was nearing his sixties, and once-brown hair had given way to salt-and-pepper. He looked around him as he walked towards the group, like an exile returning to a beloved home he thought he would never see again. As he grew nearer, a cheer started going up from among the team's old hands, the players that had been with the team since at least the thirtieth World Bowl, if not longer.

"Well, I say 'new' coach," Olafsunn said with a chuckle, "But really, calling him the 'new-old' coach, or maybe the 'old-new' coach, would be more appropriate. Regulars, please welcome back the chief Regular himself. Go say 'hi' to Head Coach Baeryk Vaalburger."

The team flowed around the older coach, although it was clear that there was more enthusiasm among the older players than the younger ones that might not have been present during his original tenure. Amiable chattering began sweeping the team, until Vaalburger cleared his throat. The veterans fell silent in unison. The younger players took the hint and did the same.

"It's good to see you all again. A lot of familiar faces, and plenty of new ones, and a familiar field. I didn't think I would set foot here as a coach again, so it's a blessing to be back. Especially because I think I see a familiar fire that has always made this team a joy to coach. We all know that after last year, after another loss in the Round of Sixteen, and a pretty embarrassing one at that, we've finally shed the 'favorites' label, I think. That's good. Being written off makes us hungry, makes us stronger. So, Regulars, our challenge is clear. We're on our quest for our seventh title. We've got the ability, we're as good as anyone in this tournament, but first, we have to put in the effort." He cleared his throat, a contented smile on his face.

"So, Regulars: Let's get to work."

NEWMANISTAN ROCKETS

WORLD BOWL 33 ROSTER

"Proudly underachieving since World Bowl I"

Starters (Offense) (Standard Formation, Multiple Formations will actually be used)
QB- #12- Ryan Larkin, 25, Centralia Cougars (First time starter; was third string in WB 32)
HB- #22- Cameron Hall, 24, Putnam Lake Eagles (First Time on team, Averages 60% of carries)
FB- #48- Jimmie Gordon, 29, Daytopia Racers
WR- #83- Kevin Ambroziak, 24, Putnam Lake Eagles (4th on Depth Chart in WB 32)
WR- #80- Eddie White, 29, Olympia Gladiators (5th on Depth Chart in WB 32)
TE- #87- Jovan Carter, 31, Tundra Falls Mariners (2nd string in WB 32)
LT- #77- Ricky Longhurst, 33, Pocono City Capitals (Offensive Captain)
LG- #64- Daquan Henderson, 35, South Charlotte Condors
C- #69- Peter Dorsey, 29, North Charlotte Wildcats (3rd String in WB 32)
RG- #62- Darius Chansler, 27, Eastport Falcons (First time starter)
RT- #79- Edwin Cochrane, 32, North Falls Rivermen (First Time Starter)

About the offense:
After two disappointing campaigns in the World Bowl, there are a lot of changes to the Rockets roster, which started with a complete overhaul of the coaching staff. Under new coack Marvin Dineen, the Rockets are expected to be less of a big play team, and be more about game management. As such, he has promoted Ryan Larkin of the Cougars to be the starting QB of the team while completely doing away with both Jason Randall and Anthony Caputo. Larkin is the perfect fit for this offense, as he is a brilliant game manager. Newmanistan is not looking for the big play, but now will be favoring the methodical approach. Larkin is not known for a mobility, but at the same time he is not a complete statue in the pocket, either. He has a very good, though maybe not great, arm, but he excels in his accuracy. Running back Cameron Hall is quick and elusive. Don’t give him any room to run. Runs up the middle are not his specialty, though will still happen from time to time. Look for the fullback Jimmie Gordon to get several carries, especially in short yardage situations. The receivers can best be described as possession receivers, and Carter will be catching a lot of passes as well. In fact, don’t be surprised if ends up with more receptions (quick dump offs) then the two wideouts from time to time.

The line has the mastermind Ricky Longhurst as a returning star. There is no one better, tactically, then him. This isn’t to say he can’t be beat, but he’s not going to be outsmarted. He very rarely has a penalty called on him, and that goes true for Daquan Henderson as well. The other three, well, are a little more prone to it, especially Chansler.

Starters (Defense) (The Rockets Generally Use a 4-3 Base)
DE- #92- William Wright, 33, Tundra Falls Mariners
DE- #96- Tyrell Douglas, 33, Tundra Falls Mariners (Defensive Captain)
DT- #98- Pedro Cardenas, 28, Putnam Lake Eagles
DT- #99- Brian Tanner, 30, Loudon Leopards
ILB- #56- Rayshon Ashwood, 31, Centralia Cougars
MLB- #50- Paul Helmer, 29, Concord Broncos (First Time Starter)
OLB- #53- Harvey Bishop, 22, Tundra Falls Mariners (First Time On Team)
FS: #27- Brian Headley, 21, Springfield Thoroughbreds (First Time On Team)
SS: #28- Tyler Baynes, 25, Putnam Lake Eagles (First Time On Team)
CB: #21- Taeshawn Gilles, 27, Southport Tigers (Shutdown Corner assigned to your #1 WR)
CB: #31- Marques Cordova, 26, Centralia Cougars

About The Defense:
The defense is best when it comes to stopping the run, so there is no surprise to see the front four all returning for World Bowl 33.. Cardenas is a huge threat in the middle of the line, and if you are able to run on him you either got lucky, or double-teamed him. Wright and Douglas are excellent pass rushers, and they will blitz frequently. Linebacker play was a weak spot the last two World Bowls, so there have been changes. The Rockets still figure to be vulnerable here, however. The secondary is a speedy unit, and Gilles will trash talk with the best of them. It is not advised to challenge him all that often. He’s not perfect, but he will make big plays. Headley has wowed everyone for his play at such a young age.

Bench (Offense)
QB: #6- Alex Nelligan, 25, Tundra Falls Mariners (First time on team)
QB: #7- Evan Desorbo, 23, Daytopia Racers (First time on team)
HB: #33- Rudolph Hicks, 26, Loudon Leopards (First time on team, averages 35% of carries)
HB: #30- Anthony Padula, 21, Southport Tigers (First time on team, averages 5% of carries)
HB: #32- Shawn Claussen, 29, Springfield Thoroughbreds (First time on team)
FB: #44- Aric Scott, 33, Pocono City Capitals (Very occasional usage)
FB: #49- Randy Harriman, 27, Putnam Lake Eagles (Minimal usage, if at all)
TE: #89- Greg Hoffman, 22, Brighton Bulls (Blocking Specialist)
TE: #82- Nick Freeman, 27, Southport Tigers (Occasionally used)

THE ROCKET REPORT

WORLD BOWL 33 SET TO START

by Brianne Henry,

Good morning Rockets fans and any other international readers out there. We are just a few days away now from getting going with the 33rd edition of the World Bowl, which once again will be held in the nation of Bongo Johnson. Unless I am mistaken, this is the first time since World Bowls 1 and 2 that the same nation hosted consecutive World Bowls. Those of course, we held right here in Newmanistan. Unfortunately for some, this means no World Bowl games at home again as the entire competition will be contested in the home nation. There are pros and cons to that of course, and for those of us in the media, it is nice to be able to set up shop in one place instead of the constant traveling like you might see in the World Baseball Classic, for example. However, for the fans who cannot afford a plane ticket, it means that they will not be able to attend any games. Perhaps that’s more money you can spend on baseball, since we know that World Baseball Classic 41 will be around the corner soon.

The big news concerning the Rockets is that major changes to the roster, starting with the complete overhaul of the coaching staff. Marvin Dineen, of Tundra Falls, takes over the controls for the team, and he has brought in his own selection of assistants. Dineen is expected to be more conservative then his predecessor, Chris Henderson, especially with the immediate naming of Ryan Larkin as the starting quarterback. Not everyone is thrilled with the Rockets changing up their approach to less of an offensive style, but things had to change. Here are some quotes I picked up from around the internet concerning the World Bowl. I’ll have much more for you guys later on.

“It is an honor to lead the national team into World Bowl 33. We are one of the few participants left from the first World Bowl, but we need to have the titles to back it up. It’s a journey, but I am confident that we can make it happen.”
– Marvin Dineen, current head coach.

“Leading the Rockets on the field is a dream come true. I am truly honored, and I will do all I can not to let my team down.”

– Ryan Larkin, starting QB.

“They made a big mistake. I’ll root for them because they are my country and I still have friends on the team, but I won’t shed a tear if they struggle. This is not a team that Newmanistanians will be excited to watch.”
– Jason Randall, starting QB for World Bowl 31 and 32, omitted from roster this year.

“I think that Ryan will be able to handle it. He puts a little more pressure on us up front due to his style, but he’s a great guy to go to war with, and I am excited about playing with him.”
– Ricky Longhurst, starting LT.

“We’re gonna make plays. You’re gonna love us!
– Taeshawn Gillies, starting CB.

“I see Tenburg is in this. I hope their football team can take a hit and not cry over it like their baseball team did.”
– Kayla Carey, starting SS for World Baseball Classic team

Chapter 1: The Bodywork

The Kiaser Colonies debut season of international gridiron was, by any measure, a great success. This was even more impressive considering that coming into the tournament they were the least professional, least funded and least experienced team in the tournament. The team of enthusiastic amateurs, college students, middle-aged men and rugby rejects surprised everyone when they racked up 4 wins, one against each side, and finished third in their group. The comprehensive victory against football royalty, the Allamunnic States, was a particular highlight. But the most impressive part by far, was the impact it had at home. Over the course of the one tournament, American football experienced incredible growth. Funding increased dramatically, teams sprang up in cities, towns and universities that had no history of the sport whatsoever, player numbers increased tenfold. An unquestionably huge victory for the gridiron community of the Kiaser Colonies.

Yet there was much work needed to be done. If they were to rest on their laurels, the Kiaser Colonies would be left behind by the rest of the world. The team needed to improve drastically even just to maintain the form of World Bowl XXXII. As soon as they returned home from Bongo Johnson, the coaches and players got to work on setting up for then next World Bowl, through various tasks and obstacles to reinvent and develop themselves. Leonard Jones and his coaching staff spent time abroad meeting with professional franchises, coaches and various experts of the sport, observing how best to advance the side. One of the key steps was to improve the players physically. As with any job, it is essential to have the correct tools or equipment. This is also true of athletes. The Kiaser Colonies began by drawing up an intensive strength and conditioning plan with the key aims of turning the squad of amateurs into athletes capable of matching their professional opposition.
To manage this, dedicated fitness coach Sam Webster was drafted into the backroom team 18 months out from WB XXXIII. Webster came with a great track record as a former member of the coaching staff at the Rock Wallabies professional rugby union team and strength and conditioning coach of the Kiaser Colonies team that won the 18th rugby world cup.

The plan centred around 4 pillars:
1) Size
2) Functional Strength
3) Stamina
4) Speed

As with any contact sport, size is an advantage. To this effect, the Webster set a goal of the squad gaining an average of 10 pounds of muscle mass by the start of the world bowl. While not an incredibly high amount amount, this did account for several things. For one, the age profile of the squad. With so many players over the age of 28, there were going to be issues with weight gain. Plus in the short space of time they had, there was only so much weight the squad could put on without having a detrimental effect on other attributes like speed and cardiovascular fitness. Gym memberships and sessions for the national team and wider panel were subsidised as part of this. The combination of the weight and resistance training routine as well as a dietary and nutrition plan geared towards muscle growth were implemented across the board too.

However, not all the gym sessions were based around weight gaining exercises and heavy lifting. The sport of American football requires a range of movements and skills such as fending, blocking and tackling. To assist with these, dynamic warm-ups and motility exercises were added to training sessions to give players the appropriate range of motion to perform their jobs. In the same vein, drills and body weight exercises were devised based on these skills. For example, players were made to do sets of push up exercises to improve their ability to fend such as one handed ones and clap push ups to practice the explosive power required to execute a strong in game fend. Taking inspiration from his rugby days, Webster got the players doing exercises similar to those that front row forwards would practising scrummaging. The goal being to further their blocking prowess, using their whole body to effectively hold out against or burst through opposition lines, leading to conceding fewer sacks while completing more themselves.

As for the cardiovascular requirements of the game, the coaching staff looked to move away from doing things such as long distance running as the continual level of stamina required for that isn't entirely relevant to the sport. Instead they chose to get the squad doing shorter, more intense fitness training exercises. The primary ones were spartan circuits and sprints. These high energy, quick exercises were more in keeping with the actual nature of a game of football which is broken down into phases of play in each down. The desired effects were of course to have players able to give more in individual downs while also being able to last for more.

Speed was primarily something focused on by receivers, running backs, safeties and corner backs with less emphasis on tackles, guards and line backers. This wasn't to say that it was something purely practised by those in open play as quick reactions were key to any position. The main thing to achieve for this was to stimulate fast twitch muscle fibres. This is particularly important as they are responsible for quick muscle contraction, hence rapid movement. Thankfully, a lot of what the team were doing were quite good for this already, such as the high intensity sprints and the weightlifting. This was supplemented with routines such as bounding, acceleration and sprinting technique drills and footwork drills. As a result, receivers and running backs should have the pace and agility to outmanoeuvre the opposing defenders, and our defenders would stand a better chance of chasing down opposition attackers.

The results had shown in training games and warm ups against other sides, proving that the fitness regime was paying dividends. Both offensive and defensive stats had improved. While it would be imprudent to expect that they were up to the standard of the heavy duty teams like Cosumar and the Allamunnic States, the work done in the lead up to the World Bowl and over the course of qualification had gone a long way to bridging the gap between the Kiaser Colonies players and their professional counter parts. Soon enough results would begin to tell how much of a way there was still to go in that catch up effort. The Kiaser Colonies first game on their return to Bongo Johnson would be against tournament newcomers New Jarwel. This game comes with all the usual pitfalls of playing relative unknowns. With the coaching staff having very little information to work with, compiling an effective playbook will prove a challenge, with the same issue applying how to manage the defence and watch for threats. In any case, it's going to make for an interesting return to gridirons top table.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF ABANHFLEFT
National American football team

Abanhfleft returns to the World Bowl after getting beaten by first the Alpine Union and then Drawkland in the competition's 32nd edition to finally lose top spot to the Drawk Corps. The team went through a lot of challenges before finally lifting that coveted trophy, up to and including losing team members and staff in the crash of Air Abanhfleft Flight 5116 as well as being once swept aside by The United States of Saints, an unranked team at the time of that particular competition but is now nowhere to be found once again. Consistency is the key, they say, and Abanhfleft has been a little bit consistent these past few competitions; consistently losing, that is. The warriors of Abanhfleft will hope to buck that trend and regain both the crown and top spot this time.

BASIC INFORMATION
Name of nation
: Democratic Republic of Abanhfleft
Demonym: Fleftic
Official history: This will be Abanhfleft's sixth time playing the World Bowl after the disaster that was the crash of Air Abanhfleft Flight 5116 in Electrum. This is Abanhfleft's ninth time participating in the World Bowl overall.
Team colors: Blue, orange, and green
Style modifier: +2. Abanhfleft has adopted a new, more conservative attacking style of play under new coach Marius Magnussen.

HOME STADIUM
Image
The Amado Isauro-Imponte Garden in Kammala, Garufaloe Province, home of the Garufaloe Sidewinders of the FNLAF, will be playing host to the Fleftic national gridiron team's home matches. It has an official capacity of 51,000 people, but attendance regularly exceeds that figure thanks to a rabid fanbase, and people preferring to stand up or sit on the stairs whenever capacity is filled.

THE DEMOCRATIC PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF THE UNITED SOCIALIST STATES OF PRIDNESTROVIA
NATIONAL GRIDIRON FOOTBALL TEAM

Gridiron football, or as the morally corrupt Westerners call it, American football, has little to no interest at all in the United Socialist States. The properly European sports of association football (or in Pridnestrovia, real football) and rugby union are by far and large the most popular sports in the United Socialist States (along with the ironically very American sport of basketball, but that's another story for another time), but by no means does that mean that President Field Marshal Stepan Stepanovich Stepanenko is not going to take advantage of an opportunity to win an international trophy for Pridnestrovia when the President Field Marshal learned that there will be a new World Bowl about to occur in the weirdly-named nation of Bongo Johnson. President Field Marshal Stepan Stepanovich Stepanenko presents the Pridnestrovian national gridiron football team, and a new and glorious gridiron league is now up and running in Pridnestrovia! Truly, gridiron football has done wonders and marvels for the Pridnestrovian Republic!

In=character, Kaboomlandia is a World Assembly member and abides by its resolutions. If this nation isn't in the WA, it's for practical reasons.

Nickname: Dragons

Home FIeld: The Xanadu Dome, Pelethas (capacity 94,000 for gridiron)

Football in Cosumar: Football, primarily known here as Gridiron Football (varying by region), is the second-most popular spectator sport behind only Association Football (soccer). The Cosumar Football League (CFL) commands a strong Fiefdom-wide following. The most recent season's results can be found here. Cosumar's World Bowl team is a collection of All-Stars from the CFL. Cosumar also boasts two of the most prominent college football programs in the world: Ramusok Capital University and Stoneshore College. RCU and Stoneshore have both won the NationStates College Football (NSCF) championship, the former three times. As such, many of Cosumar's World Bowl players had experience in NSCF prior to their CFL careers. For example, RCU star quarterback Brandon Reigner was drafted into the CFL by the Emerald Cove Conquistadors and has become MVP there, landing him on the National Team for World Bowls. As previously mentioned, gridiron is quite popular at collegiate, professional, AND international levels.

Roster
Starters in bold
Name - Age - CFL Team

QUARTERBACK
Brandon Reigner - 35 - Emerald Cove Conquistadors
Jeston Boulware - 32 - Morponte Marauders
Ra'ef Nimmo-Dirksen - 26 - Na'Malsille Venom

The absence of Jakkrik Levinsson can still be felt after his post-WB30 retirement, but it's nevertheless a veteran group of quarterbacks that Rod Mason has called in. Jeston Boulware, who actually started most of World Bowl XXIX six years ago while Levinsson was mourning the death of his son, will return to back up reigning CFL MVP Brandon Reigner. Boulware was never the dynamic and flashy playmaker that Levinsson was, but he's the prototypical quarterback. Tall, broad-shouldered, with the highest throw velocity in Cosumar. Excels doing quick drops and immediately hitting his receivers on slants and other short routes. Brandon Reigner, meanwhile, is noted for his poise and leadership at the end of games, and cannon arm throwing downfield. Third-choice Ra'ef Nimmo-Dirksen is here to gain experience for the future. A former Arena League player, Nimmo-Dirksen is an elusive dual-threat with superb quickness jolting out of the pocket that pundits say remind them of Levinsson himself when he was first starting out.

BACKFIELD
RB Neptune Trevorrow - 30 - Versiaville Vikings
RB Macauley Swarthman - 27 - Hagenheim Vagabonds
RB Nic Perrantes - 26 - Dawchire Eagles

FB Major Ackerman - 29 - Versiaville Vikings

Neptune Trevorrow is a bruising back who loves dishing out punishment at the end of his runs. He hits the hole with aggression and is a beast to bring down. Coach Mason will have to limit his carries to keep him from getting worn down over the course of the tournament. This means there will be plenty of carries available for Macauley Swarthman, last season's breakout star who is a complete back with an all-around game, and Nic Perrantes, the young speedster who is finally back to full strength after sitting out last season with ACL/MCL tears following a promising rookie season. At fullback, Coach Mason called in Major Ackerman due to his chemistry with Trevorrow. He has blocked for Trevorrow for years and won two Dragon Bowls with him.

TIGHT END
Justus Bod - 29 - Kaldukosic Blazers
Lucas Castillo - 29 - Bayford Blue Dragons
Mati Jalonen - 23 - Helfin Mighty Men

With Kashmir Morrow finally retired, Justus Bod is now the unquestioned first-choice tight end after his best two statistical seasons yet for the ever-consistent Blazers, helping his team to Dragon Bowl XIII with his wide catch radius and hand strength. Lucas Castillo, no relation to famous corner DuAndre, is a consistent performer who moves into the TE2 role. He's not extraordinary, but he's a good blocker and route runner. Mati Jalonen earns his first call-up as the third TE and a core special-teamer after a nice rookie season for the Mighty Men.

WIDE RECEIVER
Thoumen Kuyengall - 27 - Olask Dolphins
Seamus Fiefield - 27 - Emerald Cove Conquistadors

Akim Fjara - 31 - Helfin Mighty Men
Thomen Hanfstaengl - 27 - Versiaville Vikings
Madison Weeldreyer - 24 - Samotath Scourge

Cosumar will feature a very different receiving corps than World Bowl 31. Kuyengall still starts out wide, as the most dominant receiver from Silver Conferece, but there was a bit of a void after him with longtime fixture Willoughby retiring perhaps prematurely. Kuyengall is the tall, blazing-fast deep threat. Seamus Fifield, opposite him, is more of a prototypical possession receiver: master route-runner and space-creator, great hands. Akim Fjara, noted for his quick acceleration and elusive cuts in tight spaces, will line up in the slot, where he has a good rapport killing defenses by a thousand cuts with former RCU teammate Reigner. Thomen Hanfstangel is a like-for-like back-up for the other Thoumen, a vertical threat, and Weeldreyer is a utility receiver who can do it all - most notable for having the fastest 40 time on the team.

OFFENSIVE LINE
LT Gregory Votto - 26 - Ramusok Stars
LT Leighton Kurevic - 32 - Sarmon Spirit

LG Harmon St. Clair - 28 - Sarmon Spirit
LG Varum Na'Golo - 33 - Hagenheim Vagabonds

C Finn Maki - 27 - Emerald Cove Conquistadores
C Michael Fuchs - 24 - Samotath Scourge

RG Jakk Trice - 26 - Emerald Cove Conquistadores
RG Elsdom Blomsson - 29 - Helfin Mighty Men

RT Codal Kouyate - 28 - Opjenheim Bulldogs
RT Demetrius Petrov - 31 - Dusk Bearcats

Rod Mason has revitalized the offensive line since World Bowl XXX. Neither starting tackle had played a down for Cosumar before until the last World Bowl. But both are shining stars now, ready to power Cosumar to glory this time. Gregory Votto earned All-CFL First Team honors three years in a row out of Stoneshore College, a stellar pass protector with nimble feet under his massivley muscular frame. Codal Kouyate, once his rival in NSCF with RCU, had similarly impressive third season this year. Kouyate is known for his unbelievable hands. Iron grip - once he has hold of a defender under the chest pads, they're at his mercy. If there's a weakness, it's the interior line. Both centers are inexpereinced at this level with zero international starts between them. Guards Trice and St. Clair are solid, but not world-class players like Votto or Kouyate.

DEFENSIVE TACKLE
Maximillian Hall - 29 - Dawchire Eagles
Lothar Grunstein - 28 - Bayford Blue Dragons

Vaber Dandurand - 27 - Sarmon Spirit
Kol Chessmore - 23 - Na'Malsille Venom

Hall and Grunstein are massive bodies that clog up the running lanes. They stop the inside running game dead in its tracks. They don't do much else, but they perform that one task very well. That especially applies to Grunstein, who is by far the largest player of the lot at nearly 400 lbs, but lacks the others' finesse. When the Dragons need more pass rush up the middle, they'll insert Dandurand or Chessmore, who are more modern, finesse pass-rushing DTs who can also play DE.

DEFENSIVE END
LE Toby Tancredi - 30 - Dawchire Eagles
LE Connell Rapoport - 26 - Winnipeg Raiders Image
LE Oskirk Hevermann - 32 - Morponte Marauders

RE Antigonus Jameson - 28 - Crawford Comrades
RE Melvin MacDiarmid - 26 - Cassandra Wildcats
RE Goran Kravikovic - 22 - Hagenheim Vagabonds

It has been a good run for Oskirk Hevermann, who has spearheaded Cosumar's pass rush for a decade. He'll still play a key role on this team, but it's now the time for the generation of Melvin MacDiarmid and Connell Rapoport to rise. They'll push starters Jameson and Tancredi, both former NSCF Defensive Player of the Year finalists who have achieved that same level of production in the CFL. Tancredi's effectiveness sacking the quarterback is a huge reason why the Dawchire Eagles have flipped from lovable losers to true contenders in recent seasons. The secret to his success is his flawless technique and arsenal of well-crafted moves. Jameson, on the other hand, is just a freakish athlete who overwhelms offensive linemen with his speed, power and relentless motor.

LINEBACKERS
LOLB Quin Wooton - 27 - Morponte Marauders
LOLB Dat Zheng - 32 - Versiaville Vikings

MLB Berahthram Nedved - 28 - Mallox Tigers
MLB Artur Seeger - 27 - Kaldukosic Blazers

ROLB Cygnus Cason - 27 - Na'Malsille Venom
ROLB Kalah Na'Safeh - 29 - Emerald Cove Conquistadors

After being broken in as the starter in World Bowl XXXI, Cygnus Cason is ready for the limelight as the bona-fide star of the Cosumarite linebacking corps. His play-reading instincts and closing speed are second to none on the roster. Berahthram Nedved is a physical presence in the middle who is a sure tackler and racks up a lot of them with his athleticism, but isn't quite the playmaker on the ball that alternate Seeger is. Mason may rotate the two quite a bit. Dat Zheng, meanwhile, is one of the most respected figures in the Cosumarite game after leading the Vikings D to a second Dragon Bowl last season. He will transition to a back-up role this season and guide the transition to starterhood for reigner CFL Defensive Player of the Year Quin Wooton. Groomed by the Marauders' machine, Wooton is a great, complete linebacker who is putting together a skillset that combines Zheng's consistency and leadership with the physical measurables that his elder never had.

CORNERBACK
Sveinn Sneijder - 29 - Samotath Scourge
DuAndre Castillo - 34 - Zakhoro Wolfpack

Lark Bowman - 23 - Centus Owls
Hedley Shrewton - 30 - Olask Dolphins
Curinho - 24 - Kaldukosic Blazers

Sneijder is the centerpiece of a Samotath Scourge defense that just stunned elite CFL offenses en route to the Silver Conference Championship, possessing all the smarts, speed and savvy you want in a corner. He's slightly shorter than you'd like, but that's made up for by the ageless DuAndre Castillo on the other side. Castillo is tall, wiry corner (6"5), with springy legs built for outjumping receivers. Don't even try to throw in his direction on jump-ball. Even at 34. A crop of young corners including Bowman and Curinho is pressing hard behind them.

SAFETY
SS Leumas Ren - 31 - Pelethas Thunder
SS Tad Partain - 26 - Dusk Bearcats

FS Devan Edelby - 30 - Kaldukosic Kataklysm
FS Kirum Sexton - 29 - Flen Jaguars

What do opponents need to know about the Cosumar secondary? Leumas Ren. That is all. The man is arguably the best safety in the history of the CFL and Cosumarite national team, blossoming into an incredible player over the last six seasons in Pelethas that have seen the Thunder dominate the league. His unquenchable fire and lust for contact make him a force to be reckoned with still after all these years. Kirum Sexton also revived his National Team career with a move to free safety last year that saw him lead the CFL in deflections despite playing on a bad team. He will back up longtime starter and Kataklysm captain Edelby, a long rangy playmaking safety. Tad Partain is the new blood in the unit, pushed into the conversation by a resurgent season for the Dusk Bearcats and their defense in which he caught six interceptions. He's an undersized but feisty defender who likes to mix it up with big star receivers, but is viewed as too undisciplined for the strict Mason to play him often.

SPECIAL TEAMS
K Xendel Reieffen - 37 - Altamirano Devils
K Latep Na'At - 28 - OAS Kingsmen

P Keevu Schavinski - 67 - Ramusok Stars
P Æðelbeorht Baardsson - 30 - Morponte Marauders

KR Devin Ferris (WR)
PR Nic Perrantes (RB)

Xendel Reieffen is as consistent as they come, a bona-fide institution for Cosumar on special teams over the years. Keevu Schavinksi, Ramusok's 67-year-old punter, remains one of the more remarkable stories in all of Gridiron. He's by far the longest-serving member of the National Team and still boots balls downfield like he did 45 years ago. How his unorthodox diet and legendary training regimen keeps him hardy at an advanced age is the subject of much speculation and curiosity year-in, year-out. Conspiracy theory has it that he might have some type of cyborg component or mechanical enhancement.

This can take place immediately after World Bowl XXXII or immediately before World Bowl XXXIII. You decide.

Drawkland 0 10 13 17 40
Abanhfleft 10 6 3 3 22

You sometimes just wonder how such a simple string of letters and numbers can bring heaps and heaps of disappointment upon the millions of people living in the Democratic Republic of Abanhfleft. I mean, there's nothing about those letters and numbers themselves which can do harm to a person and yet, put them together in this exact manner and in this exact style and you've got a recipe for broken hearts.

Coming into World Bowl XXXII, everyone was in quite the happy mood. We'd already finally won the damn thing last time around and now we're the defending champions. Now, we did have a good bit of a slog in getting through the group stage but ultimately we qualified comfortably with a 6-2 win-loss record. Now, looking back at the official World Bowl XXXII website, it looks like there's a column for draws but not a lot of that happened in that World Bowl if I remember correctly. Maybe there was one game with Pridnestrovia which ended in a draw but I can't remember the particular details of that game, and either way I'm beginning to ramble. So we made it through the group stage with relatively few surprises and stumbles. In the Round of 16, we were drawn against what I still think of as the big boys, the Allamunnic States, mostly because I come from a time when the Fanboys were still the kings of the gridiron and, incidentally, our national team hadn't been almost wiped out by a plane crash during a cyclone in Electrum just yet.

So the game was Abanhfleft vs Allamunnic States. Everyone's expecting either a very tight and close game or one of the teams is going to absolutely shit on the other team and leave them in the dust. And that second scenario is exactly what happened in the game against the Fanboys, although it was us who did the shitting on the States and absolutely left them behind in the dust. I mean, you can't deny a 39-0 scoreline! We shut out the Fanboys! That's something you never see everyday! Especially for old folks like me, who still remember the days when Allamunnic States was king and Abanhfleft was still a young and plucky side aiming just for one upset against the other established big boys. But this is the new world now; we're the big boys and it appears as if the Fanboys have been left by the wayside. Of course, we don't know how they or we are going to do in the next World Bowl but at that moment, that was the moment where an old hand like me finally felt the winds of change blowing.

Up next was the Royal Kingdom of Quebec, notable for their gridiron side, their fans and ultras, and their absolutely cold conditions during their turn to host the World Bowl. I can't complain about it because I wasn't there but my point is that Quebec is another one of those sides, like Allamunnic States, which has always stuck in my mind as one of the best gridiron teams. There's just no getting around that particular fact. So now we're facing the Royal Kingdom of Quebec in the quarterfinals of World Bowl XXXII and I'm sitting here thinking, Oh, Dara, this is the moment when the run finally ends, the moment when we're finally be going back down to reality and be the mediocre and middling team that we always appear to be during international competitions and not the defending World Bowl champions. According to those idiots calling themselves the "Real Fans" of Abanhfleft, there is a secret cabal dedicated to keeping Abanhfleft mediocre in international sports. Let's try not to get there as much as possible. That is beyond our concern.

Once again, everyone's expecting another tight fight but we were all to be disappointed once again as our defense held firm and allowed only one touchdown to the Quebecois defense allowing seven touchdowns from us. That score would and should probably read 35-7 to Abanhfleft if only our team didn't decide to showboat a little in the final quarter and attempt the two-pointer instead of sticking for the tried and tested and just simply more reliable PAT. Still, a win's a win, like a lot of our coaches and managers like to say, and that's that.

Now up ahead of us in the semifinals was the Union of Socialist Alpine Republics (by the way, they're the Alpine Union now. That's what they're calling themselves now. Just a little FYI.) Now, back then there was no way of us knowing that they were going to be the World Bowl champions and they were also quite the outside bet in winning the World Bowl so no one was, and I hate to use these terms but this was definitely what I did anyway, taking them seriously. We all thought, "There's no way that the Alpine Union will be able to beat us. We're the defending World Bowl champions, for crying out loud! We're the number one team in the world gridiron rankings! There's no possible way that we can lose this! We're headed for our second World Bowl final in two years!" And therein lies our mistake, our collective mistake as a nation. We underestimated the Alpine Union, plain and simple. Sure, we got two touchdowns and our score really should have been 34-14 if only the wind didn't pick up and put a deft crosswind touch on Cleveland Hyneman's point after touchdown. But that's another story for another time once again (or if you like, you can go through my posts and search for my own ranting tirade right after the loss against the Alpine Union, or if you're a lazy lard-arse who can't be bothered to swipe back up to the top of the page and go through my post history, here's the link to the aforementioned rant. About the only humor that I could have gotten out of that weekend was the fact that Drawkland also lost against the Greater Vakolicci Haven, another country nobody with two brain cells to rub would've thought have been able to make it all the way to the World Bowl final.

So, off to the third place playoff it is, then. It's already a tired old joke that's been beaten to death too many times as well but Abanhfleft's specialty does appear to be third place, doesn't it? We're all about that bronze, all that bronze, no trouble and all that. Well, no, not anymore. Apparently not even our skills with the third place trophy could help us lift ourselves over Drawkland this time, who have been after our arses for being the guys who won the World Bowl and yet somehow were still not number one in the rankings. Hell, I understand them. In their position, I'd be mad at us too. That's just the way the world works. Anyway, the game starts, and Harry (Harrison) Aumann's starting for us, as always. He's been hot throughout this tourney, landing TDs left and right and seemingly unable to throw a pick. Yeah, he went a little bit cold in the knockouts and that was when we saw Danny Villavicencio become quite a possibly a new star in his own right, holding his own against Allamunnic States and Quebec when his main role before had been the third-string QB, practically the closer.

But back to the game. Abanhfleft started off hot, with Harry Aumann finding Oren Makkabi at 3rd and 3 in the first quarter for a 37-yard touchdown. Makkabi still got some legs and a great big humongous powerful engine on him even though he's already 29 and only growing older. Later on in the first, Cleveland Hyneman converted a 32-yard field goal to put Abanhfleft 10 points up, and we ended up shutting out Drawkland in the first quarter. Some of that patented Fleftic hubris crept back into all of our systems that moment, that moment that maybe some of us (all right, it was probably only me) believed that we would probably be able to shut out Drawkland. But of course, that wasn't possible. It could never be possible, not when Abanhfleft was playing against them.

Now we move to the second quarter. We (meaning Harrison Aumann) were unable to throw any more touchdowns after the one TD in the first quarter but it's not biggie. We can move the chains and go for the field goal more times than not. And that's what we do; two FGs for Cleveland Hyneman. But Drawkland finally get themselves back in the game, first with Dak Waterman finding Daniel Madison on 2nd and 12 at their 40-yard line for a rushing TD. Matthew Watts then kicked a 41-yard FG that looked like it would drop just below the bar before the pigskin somehow managed to kiss the bar in the right place to make the game 16-10 but that was all right for us. We were still six points up; we just needed to hold on for the win and get that third place trophy once again.

Alas, it wasn't to be. After the half-time, Drawkland appeared to be more motivated and just generally more ready for the fight than Abanhfleft. Maybe the shock of the defeat to the Alpine Union was still ringing in their minds. Maybe they for all of their talk and jokes of bringing third place home didn't want to perpetuate the joke any further. The point is that the Fleftic players didn't look too motivated at all. And that's how Toby Miller landed the Grid Corps' second touchdown of the game from an attempted Dak Waterman sneak (I mean, Waterman faked a sneak so that the defense would focus on him with the Drawks in the red zone before he sneakily tossed it back to Miller for the TD) and Matthew Watts racked up two more FGs, sandwiched in between which was Cleveland Hyneman's own FG and Abanhfleft's only score in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Drawkland just became those bunnies with the batteries on their backs and just kept on going and going. Waterman got his own touchdown (about as much as he deserved anyway for all the effort that he put in to finally get Drawkland the bronze and the number one spot in the rankings), Watts scored his fourth field goal of the game and Daniel Madison scored his second TD of the game as well. And all we could muster up was another field goal. Yeah, that was the moment when I realized that we, Abanhfleft, really are a mediocre country with a mediocre mentality, and all of our shit results up to and including that moment was all that we deserve and more.

Well, now that I've got that out of the system, let's turn to other things before I close out this post of mine. Pridnestrovia has finally got its own gridiron league, the Pridnestrovian Gridiron Super League, going, and if the news from their Pridnestrovian Central News Agency are to be believed, it appears as if they're allowing the national team of Barunia (yeah, you read that right, the national team of Barunia) to compete in that august competition. Some Fleftic talents like Cortez Amoroso and Kelly Profit are already under contract with the new league as well, which everyone in Pridnestrovia hopes will help develop the sport in their country more. Oh, and apparently there is now going to be an arena football league in Abanhfleft and her colonies. People are already busy investing and throwing funds at franchises for this new league so it must be a worthwhile venture. I might actually consider throwing some of my own money into this. And you didn't hear that from me so there's no way that Graham, David, and Aisling can accuse me of siphoning from Zsofia's savings account. Shite, did I type that out? Better get going then....

Hail Mary

Buddharia's Most Trusted Football Source Since Acceptance Into The World Bowl

Defense Wins Championships

The saying may be as old as sports but it certainly rings true for our illustrious national team. The four starting lineman were ripped straight from last years reigning domestic champs, The Worchester Surf. Allowing a league low 43.2 rushing yards a game and accounting for 38 sacks across the season. The most memorable, of course, in taking down Cedric Turner in the championship game as he went for a game winning touchdown. Advice for our fellow World Bowl competitors, don't run to our right or you'll be waking up the next day with a little more than a headache. Steven Lawson and Adam McBride crush running backs, combining for more than 550 pounds of pure muscle.

Enough about the line, our corners aren't anything to scoff at either. I mean, do I need to say more than Julio Poole? Three-time defensive player of the year, rookie of the year, seven all star games, conference player of the year, oh yeah, and at only twenty seven he already smashed the record books for most interceptions in a career. Quarterbacks beware, this man will not go easy on you. I am a little surprised that Issac Crawford received the starting role for the second corner position over Luis Jenkins though. Issac Crawford is a solid player, but at only 23 with two years in the league he is far from his full potential. Luis Jenkins has been in the league for twelve years and has numerous all star games under his belt. The only reasoning I see from Coach Parker is that Crawford is fast, and I mean fast. The kid won several track titles throughout his high school and college career but decided on the life of football instead.

To round out this already great D, we have the likes of Franklin Powell and Issac Barker starting in the line backer position. More than one quarterback has been on the wrong side of a blitz from these two big boys. Barker has some of the best footwork I have ever seen in the league, he is consistently faking out quarterbacks and receivers alike. Down at safety we have the excellent addition of Calvin Copeland. He may just be coming off his rookie year but I have never seen someone with an ability to read offensive plays like Copeland. He very well could be the dark horse that gives our unranked team a chance at the playoffs.

Offense Loses Championships

Alright, maybe I made this one up, but this saying could certainly be on everyone in Buddharia's mind in a few short weeks. Sure, we have a solid line on offense just like on defense. Walter Bryant, Stuart King, Donald Schmidt, Alejandro Wagner, and Greg Davis. Yeah, that's probably the best line Buddharia could put together, the problem lies just about everywhere else on the offense. Most of these players are incredible young and unproven, or just simply not the best our beautiful country has to offer.

I don't even know where to begin with this one. Let's just get the elephant in the room out of the way. ERVIN GRIFFIN OVER CEDRIC TURNER?!?!?!? ARE YOU INSANE COACH PARKER?!?!? Cedric Turner has been to five, I repeat five championship games and won four of them. Does anyone remember the numbers for Griffin? Oh yeah, zero. They have both been playing pro for seven years and are both twenty eight years old. Sure, Griffin plays on the Adamsville Toilet Bowls (or at least that's what they should be called), but his stats have never even compared to that of Turner. I guess you want someone with experience running the worst offense in the league because our problems only begin here.

Let's move on to the man who will be right by Griffin's side as our offense goes straight into the gutter. I'm talking about our wonderful running backs of course. Don't get me wrong Levi Ramsey, Malcom Brown, and Fred Lance are all decent half backs. That's where the praise stops though, they are just that, completely middle of the road. I don't know how star players like Pete Cain and Cornelius Smith didn't make the roster. All three of them have very little experience and haven't done anything worth mentioning in their short time in the league. Ramsey is definitely the best of the bunch, averaging 62.8 yards a game over his three years. Brown might surprise us with some trick plays, in college he was always known to be a threat at passing. However in his debut season in the league last year we didn't see that happen once, so I think those days are behind him.

To finish things off we have another group of youngsters with practically no experience in the pros as our receiving corp. I don't have much to say about these guys because the oldest one in the bunch is Joe Mendoza and he's only twenty four with three years experience. The rest just finished up their first and second years in the league. They certainly are some of the fastest receivers in the league but I'm not sure how that will translate in the World Bowl. I could easily give a list of at least twenty seasoned veterans who deserve to be on this roster more than these guys. Maybe I'm missing something in this offensive lineup, I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Good luck Coach Townsend, you're gonna need it.

PLAYLIST

01/Series Theme: Papercut, Linkin Park
02: The Mole, Hans Zimmer

Part Two.

“We’re coming up on our target in about one minute… It’s the expensive looking superyacht that you see in the distance. I believe it’s called the Black Gold. Once a symbol of the wealth of Zhirov Oil and their employees, it’s now a prison to the heirs of one of their most important board members. The Blasistsas boarded it during the night, about forty eight hours back, and it’s been moving out to sea like this ever since. Where’s it headed? Nobody knows. There’s no ransom, no contact, nothing. Just a few pictures from the crew that let the authorities identify the attackers. I know many of you don’t like it when we sell our services like mercenaries, but this is going to be good money for us, lads,” says Raquel, sitting at the front of the small craft that cuts through the waves with precision and purpose, towards the massive yacht that makes them look like an ant.

“Just bring these entitled college brats back to their parents, and their daddy is going to give us more money than any of us have ever had,” she continues, looking over her crew one more time before reaching down to tighten her gloves, and check to make sure that all of her weapons are in place. “Costa, Leon, Vicky, Bojovic, are you all ready? Ready to come out hot and put an end to this quickly?”

“Let’s just say there’s other jobs that I would rather do!” Costa shouts over the sound of the engine. “You know things are serious when they’ve called in us, the Drustvo, instead of just having the cops bring a SWAT team!”

“We have a higher rate of success with this shit,” remarks Leon. “Which one of us is going to stay with the boat?”

“I’ll do it,” shrugs Vicky. “I’m the only one that can get us out of here quickly in a pinch, and you all know it.”

“We aren’t going to get into anything that we have to get out of. We’re going to flood in while half of these bastards are sleeping, and end this battle before it can start. From there, we just have to call up our buddies from Zhirov and tell them that they can send a heli,” replies Raquel. “The longest part of this is going to be the boarding, I promise you that!”

Vicky looks past Raquel and at the distance, and slows the engine down to slow their approach and avoid making noise. “Alright, we’re coming in right now. Costa, get the hooks,” she says, while navigating the boat to run side by side with the larger superyacht. The grappling hooks are huge, big enough to latch onto the railing of the ship and stay in place as the sailors pull themselves closer, and then pull themselves up. Costa throws the first one at the railing and it sticks on the first try, even though the noise level is a bit much for comfort. He hands the next one to Raquel, who also gets it to stick, and the two start pulling the raft towards the yacht, while Vicky tries to navigate them closer with the engine.

“Costa, Bojovic, Leon, grab your guns and let’s go,” says Raquel, picking up her own AK-74 and putting it on her back with the long strap that’s been added on. The others do the same, and they all grab a few sidearms too, and when the raft is close enough to the yacht, they pull themselves out of it and scale the ship’s side. It’s a simple move that’s harder than it looks, but they’ve done it before. It’s one of the reasons why they were chosen for this job.

Racquel isn’t the most athletic, and the climbing strains her muscles and makes her feel, for a moment, like she’s about to fall. But she tightens her grip, adjusts her gloves one by one, and pulls herself over the railing, throwing her hook back to the boat. Costa is up, and then Leon, and Raquel offers her hand to pull Bojovic onto the deck also, while looking around to see if there’s any guards. “Looks like everyone is either below deck or sleeping,” she remarks, unstrapping her gun and holding a finger to her lips. “Let’s not wake them, if we haven’t already.”

If they alert the guards or wake up the majority of the Blasistas, their odds of both success and survival drop drastically. They’re outnumbered, outgunned, they have to protect two defenseless prisoners, and their goals depend on being able to outshoot a smaller number of guards and then pull off quickly. Their skill at doing things like that is why the police weren’t just called… In a situation like this, the mob is more experienced. “How many decks are on this thing?” asks Bojovic, pulling a balaclava over his head.

“A lot. But if this ship is anything like the other ones of this model, the crew quarters are on the deck below us and the storage rooms are at the bottom. Those are the floors we should check,” explains Costa, picking up his own rifle and starting towards the stairs. “Ladies first?” he asks with a chuckle, gesturing towards Raquel.

“Fuck you.”

She calms her heart with a deep breath, and then steps in front of the others and takes the point position, opening the door and then starting down the stairs, her footsteps slow and calculated. She’s moving like she’s sure there’s a group of hostiles at the bottom of the flight of stairs, and the others are following her lead, with Costa stepping inside the stairwell last and closing the door softly behind him. It was dark before, but it’s even darker now that they’ve entered the hallway, and they don’t have equipment to see through this.

The darkness is both an advantage and a disadvantage, a blessing and a curse, because while it makes it harder for the enemy to shoot at them, it also makes it harder for them to shoot back and harder for them to search for their two targets. “We have suppressors… If anything moves, we shoot. We’ll have to risk waking everyone up with the noise, because if we let anyone see us, they’ll wake everyone else up anyway.”

“Right. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.”

Hail Mary

Buddharia's Most Trusted Football Source Since Acceptance Into The World Bowl

VICTORY!

Celebrate in the streets everyone, it's official we are undefeated throughout the history of the World Bowl! Alright, so maybe it's only been one game but I'm not technically wrong. We pulled out this 34-23 victory over Vangaziland mostly on the back of our defensive line. Overall, this game certainly showed the tenacity of our defense and should give us all a bit of hope for the future of this offense.

Let's start by breaking down the defense. The D-line was unstoppable, Webb recorded two sacks and one forced fumble, Lawson and McBride also managed to obtain a sack each. It didn't stop there either, good ol' Julio Poole was a major force to be reckoned with as well. In fact, we can thank him for the victory altogether. He managed to grab four interceptions and ran three of them all the way back for touchdowns. Could we please play against Dan Bundison every game?

Our offense was shaky at best. Griffin was able to connect to Mendoza for one touchdown but ended only 8-19 with 75 yards. Far from an impressive performance (have I mentioned we should start Turner before?). On the upside Griffin didn't throw a single interception and looked to have much more confidence than he usually does. Maybe he'll turn things around next game are really get those pistons going. Ramsey put on a decent performance, rushing for 72 yards however he did fumble at the goal line in the third that cost us a touchdown.

Rickey Bush also managed to connect on a 23 and 41 yard field goal attempt, rounding out the scorers for us. All in all I'd say it was a decent introduction to the World Bowl for Buddharia, we definitely have some work to do if we want to compete with the big boys of our group like Cosumar and Allamunnic States. However, this game shows our team certainly has potential and could end up near the top of the group.

EDIT: I assure you all that I am the most trusted source for all of Buddharian football. However, even I make the occasional mistake. Our defensive line did not make nearly as many sacks as I claimed. Many of them were just tackle for losses on Filip Skog Jr., Vangaziland's running back. Even with countless negative yards Skog managed to net 98 yards and 2 touchdowns on our seemingly perfect defensive line. It may seem worrisome that the best rushing defense in the BNL (Buddharian National League) allowed so many rushing yards, I wouldn't fret though. Our entire defense held extremely well against the pass and showed great potential against the rush.

Franklin Powell Out

Powell went down in the fourth quarter with an undisclosed knee injury. As of right now doctors have yet to confirm the exact injury but say he's expected back in two games with the possibility of reduced playing time next game. This is a small blow to the defense but I don't expect it to have much impact on the whole of the D. Especially not with how much everyone else stepped up last game. I'll keep you all updated as any new information comes out.

Quinn Wallace Moving to Starter?

Wallace was an excellent receiving tight end last game, he grabbed 3 passes for 26 yards and that was all in the fourth. He's been known as a clutch receiver in the past but in recent years has been more of a lead rushing blocker. Coach Parker has yet to confirm or deny these rumors but don't be surprised to see Wallace lining up next game over Peterson. He might just end up being the shot in the arm this offense needs moving on.

Vangaziland National Football played a spirited opponent in the team from Buddharia. The event was primed with talk of the large and strong opposing right side. One thing was for sure. They would not be easy opponents for the Vangazi, showing a bit of preparation in their form, evident from the first pre-game warmups.

Filip Skog is the Vannish halfback. He comes from a line of people on the outer borders, in the heart of the Vannish tundra known for their heartiness. His people were warriors, ranchers, ice fishermen.. They negotiated trades and built their society on a border where they were always outnumbered. In the modern age, the Vastra still lived in semi-arctic conditions.

In some areas, snowshoes are necessary for winter life. The conditions are an opponent, far tougher and more brutal than any sportsman. It was this hostile climate that forged Filip Skog, dark blonde beard clinging to his angular jaw. Where Bundison was all talk, pomp and circumstance, Skog was all business... Just business.

The Vannish O-line was a working unit. They had size, but they still had plenty of skill to learn. They were strong, but various techniques could get past the line. Certain players were also prone to penalties.

It was the latter that would help the Vangazi lose game one against a fairly equal opponent. One false start took away the momentum during a stretch where Skog was running headstrong. The penalty emboldened the defense and turned Skog against the O-line. The 5'9 HB pointed his hand at the left tackle's helmet and told him off about focus.

Isaakssen took the chewing out, but exchanged a few words of his own. Running to the right did not prove to be much of a problem for the Vangazi. Size ddn't affect the O-line, as Vangaziland had 595 lbs on the left side and 585 lbs on the right side. The linesmen were far from the moniker of 'all-muscle', however. That would come into affect as the line did show fatigue in the 4th quarter. They still managed to keep the big guys on the D line mostly away from Skog.

Bundison eventually fell under pressure. He was sacked 4 times. He also threw 4 interceptions. After the game, when reporters asked him about the picks, he said, "Only 4? That's not so bad."

The HB was also dropped twice for a loss, which may have been the source of an earlier article's statistical miscalculation since no other Vannish QB played.

He didn't seem to realize he was under criticism. Bundison went 5-15 for 95 yards. On the other side of the offense, Skog ran for 98 yards on 12 carries, going at the right side again and again. Skog picked up 2 rushing touchdowns, one up center and one to the right. The ground game looked decent enough. Blocks were being made. Skog was finding the gaps.

The Vannish O-line was more than a match for the Opposing D-line physically. Success against the Vangazi did speak to the other team's skill and athleticism. They did have an aggressive D-line, seeming to have success against pass plays for this match.

The ball just did not move through the air. Bundison was flat. One of his interceptions came with almost no pressure, with the O-line holding steady. Dan seemed to pass to the opposing CB, passing a laser right to the defender's hands.

Bundison responded to the interception by raising his arms and yelling "What happened?" A photo of Bundison with his arms outstretched was memed within minutes, with his pic attached to images of people throwing others under the proverbial bus.

Skog hit Bundison on the back of the helmet and walked away. It looked like half of a show of support and half cracking Bundison in the head.

"We all give our top effort. Loses will happen, with the team dynamic, you know?" Skog talked to reporters postgame.

Bundison did make a few nice passes. He sold the D-line on a playaction move. One defender made a move that caused a Vangazi lineman to slip, losing his hold. With the big man approaching, Bundison snapped his arm to send a ball that arched and flew in right along the sideline. Bergum cut left from the slot before juking and cutting back diagonally right to the corner.

The 2nd option receiver caught the ball and dragged both sets of toes before going out of bounds.

Taye Poconos would also score a TD on the ground for Vangaziland, leaving Bundison scoreless in game 1.

DT Devino Hutch caused the gap that led to a safety for the Vannish defense. 6'5 Taylor Barnacles slipped past 6'6 Hutch and his Mark to put the ball down in the end zone.

"We showed a bit of potential", said Coach Tillford. "We did lose a game we could have won and will game plan for the next time we see them."

The defense also fell to sloppy play, with CB's burned in the backfield on several plays.

"There is lots of room for us to tighten our shot group", the Coach continued. "We'll push to improve from here. Now we have to pull an upset to make up for this loss. By the way, congrats to Buddharia. Those fellas show potential for the future."

Chapter 2: Replacing Worn Parts

The updating of an American football team is a lot like a that of a vintage car. It ages, parts grow old and worn and need to be replaced. This was especially true of the Kiaser Colonies team. As previously mentioned, they were a team with a high proportion of players in their 30's. Naturally, this is already a point in an athletes life where a slow decline begins, so 4 years on, it was inevitable that a lot of these players would be retiring, very or close to it. And like a car, you can't continue on while missing parts. This was one of the pressing issues the Kiaser Colonies had to deal with in the run up to World Bowl XXXIII.

The main concern was certainly the age profile of the squad four years down the line. There would be a mix of players who wouldn't be fit enough to play at another World Bowl, players who's family commitments would change and players who needed to focus more on their careers. And that just accounted for the players who would reluctantly miss out on the plane to Bongo Johnson. On top of that there were certainly going to be players who lost interest in playing the sport with the latest step towards professionalism. It simply couldn't be ignored that right up until the end of the previous World Bowl, this was a social activity for a lot of the players. An excuse to go blow off some steam and then have a few pints after a busy week. This meant that the will of players to keep up playing was going to be another key determinant in figuring out which positions needed the biggest updates.

Immediately there were some big concerns with age. Matthew Elder, Peat Somers, Oswald Nelson, Blair Cowan, Nathan Low, Jeremy Webster, Graham Buchanan, Terrance Richards, Tom McKenzie and Arthur Hamill were all going to be over 36 years of age by the start of World Bowl XXXIII. Of those 10, 4 were going to be 40 or even older. Naturally, it had to be expected that a chunk of this contingent, some of who were key players in the last tournament, were not going to make it. Even before any of them ever mentioned retiring, Leonard James and his back room staff were looking for younger talented players to fill the void the starters were going to leave. Hence, several players were invited to extended panel sessions over the intervening years. Among the many players that made an impression were defensive backs Brady Ashford and Jarred Sutton, defensive line players Douglas Skinner and Woodrow Townsend, linebacker Cameron Kennedy, receiver Marshall Haynes and offensive line player Elias Kincaid.

Thankfully, due to these players stepping up to the plate when called upon, the Kiaser's had enough man power to thoroughly compensate the losses. Over the space of the four years, the Kiaser Colonies lost a surprisingly small number of players to retirement, as several senior players such as Tom McKenzie opted to push themselves to their limits to make it to Bongo Johnson one more time. In the end, only Nelson, Somers and Elder retired at the ages of 43, 41 and 44 respectively. This did mean that there was a considerable loss of experience, which is crucial in a competitive tournament. However, their younger replacements brought a lot of skill, determination and energy to the team, making up in part for what they lacked in the experience department.

Despite their opting not to retire, there were still omissions from the squad for 37 year olds Edwin Marks an Tom Tracy. While the pair were no doubt committed to the sport and had plenty of experience, it isn't the only thing that counts in a game of football. After many months and in training games, the coaching staff were faced with the decision to pick the final squad. Professional competitions at the end of the day are about the results, and they felt it was in the teams best interests to pick Sutton and Townsend over the two veterans. The new players had shown their worth in the qualifying games, and few could argue that they didn't deserve their shot at World Bowl glory.

Unfortunately for the Kiaser Colonies, the standard retirement and cuts issues weren't the only reasons they had a change of personnel. In a strange turn of events, Alistair Masters, one of the teams best players at World Bowl XXXII, had a change of heart midway to the current edition. The imported prodigy who originally qualified for the Kiaser Colonies team through his Kiaser father and a residency rule after moving to the country to study in University College Highroyds, made the decision to declare for his home nation. After picking up a fair share of attention for his outstanding performances in the World Bowl, Masters was approached by several big name professional sides abroad and signed a contract with one of them. However, having reached the high standard of club football that he had always aspired to, Masters now saw it as the next logical step to do the same and try and make the cut for his home nation's team, leaving a place to be filled in the Kiaser ranks by Cameron Kennedy. It is still unclear whether the Kiaser Colonies could come across their former teammate in the competition as several nations have yet to declare their tournament rosters, including that of Masters' home.

There was also one other notable change to the squad, but this very poignant case will be saved for another chapter as it carried its own issues due to the gravity of the situation, which are deserving of a full explanation of their own.

The Kiaser Colonies did show promising signs in their opening game of the tournament, beating New Jarwel on a scoreline of 29-7. The oppositions solitary touchdown came in the second quarter of the game, while the Kiaser Colonies managed one in each quarter, with the second of those picking up a two point conversion with a delightfully timed pass to find Marshall Haynes in the end goal. Notable performances were produced by the quartet of Bourne brothers in defence, while the star attacking player was starting quarter back Ben Christensen. The 28 year old was pin-point accurate with his passing game today, with only three of his throws not finding a player in Kiaser blue. Christensen also threw a total of 281 yards in the game while also demonstrating a clear head under pressure when a New Jarwel player beat his blocker on the second down. Christensen abandoned his attempted pass and took off on a looping run to make the 5 yards to regain the first down, much to the delight of his teammates. If the Kiaser Colonies are going to look to go a step further and progress from their group, the whole squad will need to show a similar amount of levelheadedness in game two against the old foes from their group at the last World Bowl, the Allammunic States. They will come out chomping at the bit to win that game however, after having come out the other side of the clash of the titans against 6th seeds Cosumar in their opening game. The 16-27 defeat will no doubt have general manager Erik Warnur looking to go out and restrict the Kiasers with their patient style of play, centred primarily around their strong defence. This will more than likely be a game in which running could prove to be a fruitless endeavour for the Kiaser's, however, after opting for the medium to long passing game as their preferred method of attack against New Jarwel, Allamunnic States' defensive co-coordinator Ryan Smart and defensive captain Piotr Farrangur will more than likely look at ways of negating that as an option for Leonard James' charges. All in all, it makes for an exciting match up.

Astronauts lose after bad two point call

The Space Astronauts World Bowl Team opened the tournament against Velstrania and lost an unfortunate match by a 14 to 13 score.

In fact when the score is printed it is assume that Space has scored a touchdown and two field goals to lose to a Velstrania team that scores two touchdowns. This could not be further from the truth.

The Space defense kept Velstrania out of the endzone the entire game but the nameless Velstranian kicker had an amazing night making four field goals. This went with a safety that Velstrania earned after a mistake by Space on their own goal line to make 14 points for Velstrania.

Space did score two touchdowns! one in each half with the final touchdown coming with just moments left in the game. Coach for the Space team Cosmo Icii was dumb and thought it would be a good time for a two point conversion instead of playing for a draw and over time. He maybe forgot the rules.

Anyway, of course Space did not convert the two point conversion and now they lost to a bad team that couldn't score a touchdown. Now, Space only has better teams to play so will definitely have to also play better themselves to recover from the terrible result and start to the World Bowl 33 in Bongo Johnson land.

"Hey man, I won, I deserve to be number one," exclaimed a surprisingly sober Ervin Griffin.

"You fucking shit, you ain't able to win more than two god damn...fuc..." an extremely inebriated Buddharian fan began saying before taking another shot.

"Yea, you ain't throw'n a ball into a woman's..." yet another fan chimed in before trailing off to sip his beer.

"That's right, you couldn't even aim at a...you know...I'm sure there is a metaphor or whatev here," said the first fan.

"A euphemism you mean?" responded Griffin.

"We ain't wantin' your fancy college speak round here," a third man chimed in.

"You mean the thing that's free to everyone back home? Maybe you all should take a good look in the mirror and talk to me after I win you a championship," Griffin replied with maybe too smug of a look on his face.

"You wasn't the one who...you ain't did shit in that game," yelled yet another patron of this fine gentlemen's club.

"Screw this, I'm out of here," Griffin said under his breath. He then stood up and began walking to the door.

The four men who were harassing him immediately blocked the door and one of them yelled, "It was that minority fella, Julio whatthefuckever who won us that game!"

"The what fella? I don't think any of you know what the fuck you're talking about," Griffin angrily replied.

"Hey, they be good at sports but-" one of them began saying.

"Alright, I'm going to stop you there, you all have five seconds to get out of my way. Otherwise you racist assholes are in for a world of hurt," Griffin said almost pleadingly, not wanting to get into a fight after his first World Bowl game.

The four men glanced at each other and immediately jumped on Griffin. It didn't take long for Griffin to take down two of them, by then the bouncers jumped in and broke up the fight.

"Call the coppers! This man attached us without reasons," one of the remaining two yelled.

The bouncers looked at one another and finally one replied, "He attached you?"

"Yeah! He attached us!"

One of the bouncers turned to Griffin and said, "Sir, I'm sorry about this but since they are claiming an assault took place, I will need to contact the authorities," he then turned around and muttered, "Fucking drunks."

Hail Mary

Buddharia's Most Trusted Football Source Since Acceptance Into The World Bowl

Griffin Suspended!! (YAY)

The day has finally come, much sooner than I expected too. After only one start (a terrible one at that) Ervin Griffin is suspended until an ongoing investigation is concluded. As of right now details are quite vague, we do know there was an altercation at a strip club after the game. It appears that an incredibly drunk Griffin assaulted some fans after they questioned his starting role. Not much of a surprise there, Griffin has quite obviously been irritated by anyone questioning his ability since being named starter. This may be a small black mark on Buddharia's standing in the sports world, but who cares? We have Cedric Turner starting now. World Bowl Championship here we come.

Legally and ethically I'm pretty sure I have to give you the other side of the coin though (even if it's a boring and lame story). Actually, timeout, do I? I mean really, do I? Are there any laws requiring me to cover both sides? I am a journalist so I probably should, but even then am I a real journalist? I just started a paper (can I even call it a paper if it's online only? Guess it doesn't matter, you're all paying the daily subscription fee anyway) and it's only about sports. Does sports even count as journalism? If anyone has answers please send me a PM on Tweetosphere. I digress, Griffin claims that he was being harassed by "bigots" who didn't respect his fellow teammates. They allegedly blocked him from leaving and attacked him first.

If you ask me, his story is a big pile of cat manure. He deserves to be thrown in jail for exactly the remainder of the World Bowl. If for some surprising reason he is exonerated then at least he should be kicked off the national team for misrepresenting our pride. I'm sure that's a thing and we need to abide by our laws (unless that whole journalism thing is real, again PM me on Tweetosphere).

Приднестровская Суперлига Гридирон
PRIDNESTROVIAN GRIDIRON SUPER LEAGUE

SEASON I RECAP

Welcome, comrades! Welcome one and welcome all to the first ever edition of the Pridnestrovian Gridiron Super League! As you can see, the logo above us is still mostly text-based with little if any in the way of images of graphics, but that's not our focus for the moment. Our focus is the results of the first ever season of the Pridnestrovian Gridiron Super League. But before we get to that, let's do a little history of the league and a brief overview of the teams.

The Pridnestrovian Gridiron Super League was formally established by presidential decree on May 16, 2020 with President Field Marshal Stepan Stepanovich Stepanenko of the Democratic People's Republic of Pridnestrovia accepting and signing into law the recommendations of the Special Commission on Gridiron Football (established by another presidential decree from the Comrade President himself) to establish a new gridiron league in the Pridnestrovian Republic. The Pridnestrovian Republic had already made a foray into international gridiron football when they were accepted into World Bowl XXVII held in Cosumar and while that particular campaign was a bit forgettable, the fact that a lot of members of Pridnestrovian society tuned in to watch the national team's progress through the World Bowl was a sign of things to come, that gridiron football was slowly but steadily rising in popularity within the Pridnestrovian Republic. Pridnestrovian made a second foray into the World Bowl with their participation in World Bowl XXXII and now, in time for their third campaign in World Bowl XXXIII (very fitting, as it turns out), Pridnestrovia will provide the people of the multiverse with a look through the recently concluded inaugural season of the Pridnestrovian Gridiron Super League. But first, the teams.

ADMIRAL NOVOROSSIYSK
Image

Admiral Novorossiysk is the first team on the list simply because of the alphabetical listing. Admiral are based in the city of Novorossiysk-na-Dnistr, the home of the Pridnestrovian Navy (hence their nickname the Seamen), and is officially the latest team to be added into the Admiral Novorossiysk sporting family. Admiral Novorossiysk isn't just a team in one sport; there are Admiral Novorossiysk teams in association football, basketball, ice hockey, rugby union, and now gridiron football. Their star player is Stan Serban, who served as the second-string quarterback of the national team but now debuts as the starting QB for World Bowl XXXIII.

BARUNIA-KARL MARX REDS
Image

Aha, something which you weren't probably expecting, but yes, Barunia, an entirely separate and independent nation from the Pridnestrovian Republic, is now competing in the Pridnestrovian Gridiron Super League. Barunia has a well-developed gridiron team; that cannot be denied. But what also cannot be denied is the fact that their own government doesn't believe that there is enough support in their own country to warrant the formation of their own league, much like what we have just done. After a few quick calculations and mental gymnastics, the PGSL decided to extend a formal invitation into the league for the Barunians and they've been quite comfortable here ever since.

BRATSK DOLPHINS
Image

Ah, now we finally arrive at the first of the independently organized gridiron teams in the Gridiron Super League; independently organized meaning teams which weren't formed with the backing of the other sporting teams and franchises in the city. Bratsk is a combination mining and fishing town on the Southern Peninsula of Pridnestrovia, once a closed town due to the sensitive resources being mined in its proximity but now (reasonably) open to the public, both Pridnestrovian and foreign. It does make you wonder how the older and more established teams like Chernomorets Bratsk in football and the Bratsk Bluefins in basketball managed to attract nationwide fans for themselves. But that's another story for another time.

CSKA TIRASPOL
Image

Now we come to one of the big boys, or at least one of the teams established by one of the big boys in Pridnestrovian sports. Everyone in Pridnestrovia knows about CSKA Tiraspol, the "Army Club", the club which has won the most Pridnestrovian top flight championships over everyone else. Sure, now they've come upon tougher times but club legend Ivan Krasnopresnensky has just steered them back into relevance and taught their capital city rivals Sheriff Tiraspol that no one dethrones CSKA as the best club in Pridnestrovia, at least not for very long. CSKA will hope to do the same with their brand new gridiron football team (meaning they both want to create a dynasty and teach their rivals a lesson).

DINAMO BENDER
Image

Of course, it wouldn't be a proper Pridnestrovian sports league if there was only CSKA and no Dinamo Bender. Bender is the second-largest city in Pridnestrovia (right after the capital, Tiraspol) and Dinamo is the biggest club in Bender. Tiraspol and Bender are always in a competition to determine which among them is the better city (dating back to the days when both cities were founded by the Russian colonists) and the derby between CSKA and Dinamo has been called "The Derby of All Derbies". Dinamo will of course look to carry that rivalry to the field of gridiron and they will want to get something over their "rival of all rivals" in this competition.

MACARESTI GLADIATORS
Image

The Gladiators are based in Macaresti, the capital of the Ixanian Socialist State, the area in which most of Pridnestrovia's Germans, Romanians, and Hungarians originate, and they want a piece of the gridiron action as well. The Gladiators have major backing from Dinamo Macaresti, arguably the most well-known footballing side from Ixania and the Ixanian people naturally want to make a mark in the Pridnestrovian sporting scene, and they hope that the Gridiron Super League is the path to making said mark.

NOVONIKOLAYSK SHARKS
Image

Novonikolaysk is arguably the smallest market in which gridiron football could reasonably operate. It's the textbook definition of a small town; their greatest success as of the moment is being the home of Fortuna Novonikolaysk, the club which produced Horace Popov of the Abanhfleft national football team. The population of Novonikolaysk is surprisingly addicted to gridiron and they hope that their new Sharks will finally make their town a household name.

RHEINBURG SPARTANS
Image

Rheinburg is the largest city in the Ixanian Socialist State and they stereotypically (among Pridnestrovians, anyway) have the egos to match. There was no way that they would let themselves be left out of any new and emerging sporting markets in Pridnestrovia as it's another feather in their peacock-like cap which they could brandish to anyone who would make the mistake of listening to their tirades. And of course they will choose a big and manly team name like Spartans because why not?

SHERIFF TIRASPOL
Image

Just as how there can be no Pridnestrovian sporting competition without CSKA Tiraspol and Dinamo Bender, there can also be no Pridnestrovian sporting competition without both CSKA and Sheriff Tiraspol. After years of mediocrity, Sheriff Tiraspol finally emerged into the Super League title picture in the late 2000s and early 2010s, taking advantage (and boy did they take advantage) of CSKA's transition from a title-winning side to a rebuilding team with both youngsters and old veterans. Sheriff could not and would not miss the opportunity to assert their dominance over gridiron football and turn it into their sport, the sport in which they dominate.

YERALENKO TORPEDOES
Image

And last but not the least we have the Torpedoes of Yeralenko. Based in the island province of Rivymiyitevko, the Torpedoes is a rare example that sporting rivals can and do sometimes work together for a common cause. Submarin and Torpedo Yeralenko are the aforementioned rivals who dropped their usual animosity and sometimes-hatred for each other to create the Torpedoes as both of them know that their city was only big enough for one gridiron team, and instead of trying to both field their own teams, they decided that it was in their own interests to form a single unified team. Sure, Governor Konstantin Benin of Rivymiyitevko may have put in a good if stern word in the ears of the teams' boards of directors but the Pridnestrovian sporting scene is better off because of that. The Torpedoes get their name from Torpedo Yeralenko (obviously) but their team colors are black, gray, and blue, the colors of Submarin Yeralenko. Truly they are the picture of socialist emulation, cooperation and sportsmanship.

And that's all, comrades. Next time we will finally get in depth with our recap of the first ever season of the Pridnestrovian Gridiron Super League. До свидания.
The Democratic People's Republic of the United Socialist States of Pridnestrovia
Leader: President Field Marshal Stepan Stepanovich Stepanenko

Vols Defeat Lisander in WB Opener, 28-16

Tenburg's Volunteers didn't disappoint in their World Bowl debut, defeating Lisander 28-16. The game was not even as close as the score implies, as Lisander only scored its first touchdown in the last three minutes of play.

The defensive line dominated the line of scrimmage for Tenburg, with Greystone Pirates end Donald Black garnering two sacks, while his line mate, Tyrone White, took a third, and fellow defensive tackle Thor MacEalar managed a fourth. This meant, however, that the defensive backs, for the most part, remained untested, so it's difficult to tell what will happen when they are.

Damien MacGregor impressed, throwing for 383 yards and three touchdowns. Kevin Mullen gained 133 yards on the ground, including a 50-yard touchdown run which saw him run through eight defenders.

It's a fantastic start for the Volunteers, and all of Tenburg was shut down on game day to enjoy it. We can only hope this form keeps up going forward.
I offer only slanderous mockeries!
