"We have always held to the hope, the belief, the conviction, that there is a better life, a better world, beyond the horizon."

The Teachers’ Lounge

A white table united several individuals, whose entire attention and focus as directed at a holographic projection that would flash between several faces, identifications, and action sequences. The instructors made some small talk, many broken off into discussions about a particular student or power that looked promising or not up to par with the standards set at Horizon. Seated at the head of the long table was Dean Hammer, head of the school staff and administration, as well as the final say in admissions. Rather than boredom stretched onto his face as was the case in recent years, he seemed excited and relatively upbeat.

“It seems that,” He began speaking in a deep yet rhythmic voice, the rest of the teachers ceasing their discussions and focusing onto Hammer, “It seems that this year is full of admissions of the highest caliber. I couldn’t help but notice the steady increase in overall ability and power in the student body over the course of a few short years.” He began clicking a pen and relaxing a bit, “We can be certain that this freshman class will be the strongest and most diverse we’ve had.”

“That may lead to trouble.” A gruff, extremely large and muscle-bound gentleman pointed out, his attire fitting for a physical education coach, “Outliers attract attention and that brings more villains to the school. Every year or every other year we get a cast of hooligans who almost invite Baddy McEvil into our school grounds, or so it seems.” The goliath said with a huff.

“Coach Gregor, you have a point, but it’s almost a ritual nowadays. The school is under-attack used to mean something twenty years ago but now, it’s a rite of passage for every graduating class.” A well-endowed amazonian-like woman replied, folding her arms across her chest and giving Coach Gregor a smirk. “Besides, they’re attacking a facility that houses some of the strongest beings in the galaxy, either student or staff at this point.” Gregor shook his head and glanced off to the side in annoyance, but also begrudging acceptance.

“Well,” Hammer continued from Coach Gregor and Amanda Noel’s interruption, “As Ms. Noel stated, it’s almost a rite of passage. We are so well-secured and well-prepared that we shouldn’t worry about intrusions. It serves to bring the students directly into the world after graduation as well, so, I think they’ll be fine.” Hammer moved onto the hologram situated in front of the staff, stopping on some photos. “As this is the second day of our deliberation, I think we’ve weeded out those who wouldn’t fit into Horizon based on the exam and those that will be a fine addition, as well some others that we as a group decided to take a chance on. Is there any further opposition to certain candidates that any of you would like to bring forward before we issue our acceptance protocols?”

The room was silent and seemed to be in agreement with those chosen, a decent number of potential applicants managed to make the cut but a significant number did not, more so than usual due to the impressive nature of the incoming freshman class. “Then we’re all in agreement, we will welcome the freshman class of Horizon Academy momentarily.”

The Auditorium

It would take a day or two at the most for students to receive word back on the status of their application to Horizon Academy, and this was the same case for much of the current applicants. They had passed their exam, each one designed to test the true skill of the potential student in a variety of situations, no two exams were alike beyond the ability to take down a robot of some sort for this year. Those who passed would be escorted directly back to the school with their belongings, while those who were rejected simply got a letter, and as they arrived, would be situated in a typical dorm room environment where most of their amenities would be provided for them. As the new freshman class settled into their new homes, an announcement was called to bring them all to the academy’s auditorium, whose only purpose seemed to be for these type of class-wide speeches.

The freshmen settled into their seats, if they could, as others were accommodated accordingly due to their radical difference in physiology, as a tall, razor thin man stepped onto the high-tech stage in front of them. “Greetings.” He said to the quiet room, his voice echoing naturally, “I am Doctor Thaddeus Hammer, Dean of Horizon Academy. I expect some of you know me, but others, not so much. That will not matter either way, as you all will be concerned with your teachers instead of myself. Let’s move into the meat of our announcement here, as some of you are aware of Horizon Academy’s tailor-made education course while others have no idea of what goes on in these many, many walls.” Hammer seemed to be an excellent public speaker, but tended to move quickly onto subjects directly instead of doing typical first-day, enthusiastic speeches.

“The world outside of Horizon is full of good and evil alike, but most of it falls into a gray area where you need to use your best judgement in a given situation, whether to respond with force or to simply talk to someone. Countless robberies can be stopped by just talking to the perp rather than blasting him dead on the spot, so, what we do here is in-depth simulations and scenarios to prepare you for action across the galaxy.” Hammer explained, a projection popping up behind him to aid in his visuals. “You will constantly have your powers and mind on a grindstone, each test ruthlessly assessing your decision making skills and power projection in a given situation where we can control the variables, and even in situations where we have no control. There is no better teacher than experience, after all. You will come to realize that Horizon Academy has no real classes to speak of, because we are not here to make mathematicians, historians, actors, doctors, anyone like that, we are here to fulfill one purpose and that is to make heroes and heroines.”

“You all are gifted beyond any one person’s wildest dreams, and some of you will come and go through Horizon easily, but everyone will fail at one point in our peerless and thorough examination process. We will shape you into the heroes that the many worlds of humanity and her allied races need, paragons of virtue who know when and where to take a stand for what they believe in. I have and always will have faith in my students, as time goes on, the teachings found here have shaped millions of lives for the better and will continue to do so, either through a superhuman agency, the government, or on your own. Now, feel motivated to be the best that you can possibly be, and be ready to start with your assigned teacher first thing tomorrow morning.” With that speech, Hammer gave a quick bow and exited the stage to some light applause, dismissing the students to their dormitories for the evening.

Once the headmaster had finished his speech, Joseph decided it was about time to begin hobbling over to the dorms.

Despite his crutch, however, he was both surprised and confused to realise that he was apparently one of, if not the first person there. His room was definitely empty, at least...

Damn. He'd been hoping that his roommates would be in there already, and he could just get the social interactions out of the way early instead of having to wait around, letting the anxiety stew in his gut.

Letting out a sigh, he took off his large backpack, resting it on the end of one of the beds by a window, thereby claiming it as his own. He then placed his crutch carefully down between the bed and the small bedside table, before finally lying down and looking at the roof. Honestly, this was all pretty exciting, especially given his excitable nature when it comes to superheroes. Now, if he played his cards right, he might finally end up becoming one!

It was then that he heard the door opening, and he rolled onto his side to check whether it was a student of teacher.

Despite my best efforts, my vision in my normal eyes had not improved since I'd figured out shapeshifting. I could grow a new pair, which I had, but alas, my glasses from four years ago still had not escaped me. The glasses’ black rims and tortoise shell arms were in sharp contrast with the bright colours that usually composed me, but they were still necessary for me to use if I wanted to see what my roommate looked like without having to nuzzle noses with them.

I pulled the glasses from their usual position hooked on the front of my shirt by their arms, and placed them gently on my face. The world became clear, except for the one odd blurry spot in my left, which must have been a smudge on the left lens. I took them off again, cleaned them with the bottom of my blouse, and put them back on. I then checked to make sure I had everything with me. My messenger bag, backpack, and full suitcase were all with me. Seemingly, I had everything, so I went to find my room.

Now, as I could see clearly walking to my room, I noticed the sheer variety of different beings. Reptilians, humanoid goo beings, humans, and God knows what else. All quite interesting. It's almost a shame I missed this period of time’s biology class. Though on the topic of time period, I probably ought to try to figure out the date sooner rather than later. I'm sure there will be forms to fill out somewhere.

With my random thoughts, I arrived at my room. There wasn't anybody there yet, so I just picked a bed and started unpacking. I placed a few small pictures of my relatives, all surely long dead by now, on the nightstand. I tried to figure out the power plugs for my devices, though some of the outlets looked kinda funky. One way or another, each device subsequently beginning to charge.

Next, there was the situation of the bed itself. I took out my own lilac sheets, and made the bed to my liking, then put my matching pillows and white comforter over them. Finally, I gingerly placed my cuddly toys on the pillow, first laying the blanket-like cow and sheep on my pillow, then topping them with my plush bear.

With the room now more homely, I pulled my suitcase closer to the bed, and began organising my clothes, which were already folded, into stacks which would fit in the individual drawers.

Jack Fischer
Jack paid little attention to the presentation in the auditorium, listening to it slightly to see if anything interesting was mentioned, as he gazed intently around the room at the other students. The room was packed full of people and, well, not-people. All sorts of strange and alien figures watched the stage intently. There were men, women, and some whose gender he couldn't even tell. It was going to be an interesting few years.
After the speeches, Jack tried to push through the mass of people to get to the dorms, eventually giving up and evaporating to mist, floating almost invisibly above the students. Upon reaching the dormitory block, he condensed back to human form and ducked into the first room he saw. Jack was startled to see somebody else was in the room. An odd-looking girl was sitting near one of the beds, folding clothes. Jack stood in the doorway and eyed her for a moment, unsure what to say, eventually clearing his throat. "Uh, is this room available?"

Ethan Pierce
Well that was a tremendous waste of time.
I do agree. Can we leave?
Oh, c'mon, don't be like that! I enjoyed it.
Ethan ignored the chatter in his head as he wove through the crowd of students exiting the auditorium, carrying his backpack of what few possessions he'd brought. He winced as he descended the stairs, his back was still injured from his test a few days ago. Trying to ignore the pain, he arrived in the dormitory area, and wandered around looking for an empty room. Eventually, he found one and entered.
Walking into the dormitory, he took the time to explore where he'd be living for the foreseeable future. It was a typical dorm room: a few beds and dressers, desks, chairs, etc. One door led to a modest bathroom, another to a small closet. Simple.
Ethan unpacked his backpack and sat down on one of the beds, waiting for his roommates to arrive.
I hate it here.
Of course you do. You hate everything.
I hope our roommates like us!
They won't.
In fact, I think they'll hate you the most, Overdrive.
:(
Ethan rolled his eyes, laid down on his bed, and pulled a book out of his backpack, trying to ignore his other personalities' bickering.

As I was folding my clothes, a voice from behind me caught me by surprise. I almost fell over backwards.

“Mâi tam àrai!” I exclaimed as I caught myself.

I looked over my shoulder, and turned around. I saw a black-haired boy standing in the doorway. I stood up, placing the skirt I had just folded on my bed, and smiled awkwardly.

“I'm very sorry,” I said with small awkward laugh, “You startled me.”

I rubbed right shoulder with the now functional hand of my second left arm, and awkwardly held out my second right hand, trying not to disturb my original arm’s cast, for a more proper greeting.

“I do think this room is available though. To my knowledge, there aren't any other people here yet. But then again, they could be invisible,” I said, trying to crack a joke to make things less awkward.

Maya and Iona Valeris

"Well, that was... Surprisingly boring." Maya reflected as she and Iona wandered away from the auditorium, heading in the direction of the dorms. "Dunno what I expected, but, well, something better than... Whatever we got."

Iona sighed, punch-tapping her sister's arm. "It wasn't that bad."

Maya gave her a brief glare. "Oh yes it was." She paused in front of one of the dorms. "This one ours?"

Iona blinked. "I... Think so?"

Maya grinned. "Well, if it isn't ours, it's ours now."

"I... Don't think that's how it works, sis."

Maya ruffled her hair as she moved to stand in front of the door. "Well that's how it works now. Now, if you would do the usual."

Iona sighed again as she moved to the other side of the door and pressed the handle down. The problem of Leo; it made Maya showboat, and showboat a lot. Especially when it came down to opening doors for some reason.

As soon as the handle was down, Maya roundhouse kicked the door open before striding in, Iona trailing behind her. The room seemed decent enough; beds, dressers, everything you'd expect from a dorm room. The room was also occupied, in this case by a guy with black hair lying on a bed reading a book.

Maya gave him a simple "Yo," while Iona sighed and shook her head. Why did it have to be August?

Ethan Pierce
Ethan looked up in surprise as the door was kicked open.
AAH! 0_0
It's not the police again, is it? I've got a score to settle with them...
Looking over, he saw two girls walking in. One of them, the girl who had kicked open the door, greeted him.
"Uh, hey," Ethan said, raising an eyebrow at the two. "The door was unlocked, you know." He sat up in the bed and set the book down to get a better look at the two. 'So, I guess you two are in here as well? In that case, I'm Ethan."

"Oh! I'm sorry for scaring you," Jack said apologetically. He shook the girl's extended hand, and laughed at her comment. "Well, there's plenty of interesting people here, so I wouldn't be surprised if a few were invisible."

Jack sat down on the unoccupied bed. He had nothing to unpack, and would have to look into getting clothes and such from the school.
"I'm Jack, by the way."

Eric Weaver

He made his way through the halls after everyone left the auditorium, barely managing to keep down his excitement. He was surrounded by people, all of which have abilities that shouldn't be possible through the laws of their universe. It was something new, something more complex than he could ever imagine.

He wanted nothing more than to sink his teeth into the mass of knowledge and power before him...

Lost in his thought, which he kept protected with a mess of what can only be described as noise, he almost walked past an open door. The latch had been bent, and a dent had been left in the metal slab.

Taking a few steps back, he stepped in, and looked to the three. "You can say four makes a party. Was kicking the door necessary?"

Maya and Iona Valeris

Iona smiled slightly. "She knew the door was unlocked. Aaand she did it anyways, because that's just what she does. Iona Valeris, and this door-kicking idiot's my sister Maya."

Maya shrugged as she turned and elbowed Iona lightly in the solarplexus. "Can't not make an entry, and door kicking's a good enough entry for me, for here and now at least." Maya moved over to one of the beds and flopped down on it, Iona going to sit on the one next to it.

And that was when someone else stepped in, again to complain about the door-kicking. Maya sighed. People needed to stop questioning her.

"For someone else, no, probably not. For me, yes, the door-kicking was most certainly necessary. Entries have to be made, and I don't have breaching charges on hand." She glanced over at Iona, who shook her head, causing Maya to frown slightly before saying "Spoilsport."

Xara had been in a constant state of curious awe at what she was seeing. She had given herself a small tour around the school before the orientation speech and she was impressed with what she saw. She didn't have any idea what any of the flashy things or the light screens were, but that only enhanced their wonder. She was still wrapping her head around the concept of a "school", something which her people didn't know much about. There seemed to be a lot of people around, more even than that group of people with flashy sticks which brought her to the "research facility" (whatever that meant) and to the "scientists" (she did have it explained to her, but she still wasn't entirely sure what that word meant) whom introduced this school to her.

As she walked towards the dorms, she got a lot of stares from other beings. Xara wasn't sure if it was because her race, the Xyrixma, were quite rare or if it was because of her size. Xara stood at roughly 8 and a half feet tall, towering over most of the other students. When she smiled back at them she got mixed responses, ranging from odd disgust, curious stares or whispering to whom ever was walking with the being in question. Xara wondered if she had already engaged in some sort of social taboo.

Perhaps it was because she wasn't wearing any clothes. She had been told they were important, but she was somewhat resistant to wearing anything. It wasn't like she had any of the parts that these other beings prefered to cover, being made of green slime and all, however perhaps she should still wear that stretchy suit that she had been given. She looked at the suitcase she had been given, then noticed that her room was coming up.

She walked in, then looked around. She briefly wondered if there was anyone else who would be "roomates" with her, as the scientists had described in their "college". There seemed to be more than one bed in the room.

“Heh, no problem,” I replied, getting a second look at him with my secondary pair of eyes, “I'm startled a bit easily when I don't expect anyone to be nearby. My name’s Auduliya-Zhenlinn, but if you can figure out a good nickname, go ahead and use it.”

I returned to my clothes, this time sitting so I could see Jack if he wanted to keep talking, and started dealing with my small collection of ironic t-shirts from the 21st century. Though nobody could tell at a glance, most of them were men's shirts, but nonetheless fit me well.

Polyvrachia “Octavia” Kurosawa

With the opening ceremony over, I resolved to head to my room and check out the bed situation. I grabbed my multiple suitcases full of clothes, mostly tops and bras, and headed off to find a room. With there being quite a few individuals who weren't paying much attention, some of my hands were definitely stepped on. To get out of the crowd, I climbed up onto the wall, and walked, rolling the suitcases along beneath me.

After a bit off looking, I found a room with an aquarium in addition to the rest of the faculties. I thought it might be interesting to have a room with some sort of aquatic creatures, so I headed in.

I started inspecting one bed, and it became clear that I'd have to make my own sleeping arrangements. I'd have to basically weave a hammock from my silk, which I had done before, but it'd take a while. Placing my suitcases down, I went to one side of the room, parallel to the door, and began weaving the hammock with two thick support strands of silk.

Once I finished that, I began to bridge the gap between the two support strands with a softer, more delicate silk, but still strong. It went slowly, but it'd be done before it was time for whatever meal was next on the list.

"My name's Ethan," he said, walking back to his bed and sitting down.

"So," he began. "We're all here for a reason. Some sort of power, or ability that makes us special? What would that be with you all?" he inquired.

Eric Weaver

"Well," he answered, stepping into the room and taking a seat on the edge of one of the girl's beds, "mine is a little different than being able to cast magical fireballs and whatnot."

"I'm able to understand things, to learn. I can see things that most couldn't, in a way, and I know things that most don't."

"How about you, or are you two lovely ladies willing to share?"

Ethan Pierce
Oh, boy, he can learn. I didn't realize this was a school for total nerds.
Hey, I think his ability is quite useful and interesting.
Yeah, it'll come in real handy if somebody pulls a gun on him. Or when...

Ethan ignored the chatter, and spoke. "Simply put, I manipulate electricity." He raised a hand, bolts of electricity crackling between his fingers, to demonstrate. There's some other stuff that goes along with it, but it's hard to explain. You'll probably figure it out as we go along."

Ethan turned to the two girls. "Yeah, what are your powers? I take it Maya's is the ability to destroy doors?" he asked jokingly.

"Well, it's nice to meet you, Auduliya-Zhenlinn... Yeah, I'll try and think of something," Jack said, smiling.
Standing up, Jack walked around the dormitory, examining the room. He thoroughly examined the closet and bathroom, as well as rifling through the curtains. He tried looking casual about it, speaking as he searched. "So, where are you from?"
Closet and bathroom seem clear. I'll need to check the beds and ceiling later...

As he wandered around the room, I couldn't help but wonder if there was something that we were supposed to be looking for. Considering his casual glances around though, it seemed more likely that he was just looking around, not unlike I usually would, if I weren't settling in and folding clothes to be put away.

“Where am I from, where am I from?” I said to myself in response to Jack’s question, “I'm from the south, specifically, Louisiana.”

It then occurred to me that he might not be from Earth at all, and that Louisiana might no longer even exist. He looked human though, so perhaps he was at least familiar with the place.

Jack Fischer
"Oh, really, Louisiana?" He asked, intrigued. She didn't... look like your typical Louisianan, but maybe things had really changed down there. "I've been in that area a few times. I lived more towards New England, but have kinda been all over. Not much to see down there, just a few islands and ocean. I guess Louisiana used to be a lot bigger a long time ago, apparently."
The conversation reminded Jack of his time on Earth, but he quickly shrugged off the tide of memories that threatened to swamp him.

"So, uh, this may be a bit awkward, but why exactly do you have two pairs of eyes? And arms?"

“Ah, global warming finally got ol’ New Orleans and Baton Rouge?” I said, not thinking of the weirdness that such a comment might hold towards most people, “How long has that been underwater? But excuse me, I'm being impolite dodging your question. I have some extra stuff because I decided to. I don't like wearing glasses all the time, even though my original eyes need them, so I grew this second pair so I wouldn't have to wear glasses all the time. As for the arms, well, my originals are less than function.”

As I said this, I lifted my original right arm up a bit, and shook my original left hand to show the cast and hand brace.

“So, being as impatient and hardheaded as I am,” I said, trying out a bit of self-deprecating humour on my new roomie, “I didn't want to wait for the old ones to heal before I could do thinks again, so I grew a new pair. Might keep ‘em, might reabsorb ‘em. Depends on how much I like having an extra hand or two.”

I went back to folding once I'd explained my appearance, and had finished everything except socks and undergarments. Next, it'd be time for me to figure out the bathroom situation.

"Um, they've been underwater as long as I can remember," Jack said. He wasn't quite sure what New Orleans or Baton Rouge were, but he'd vaguely heard of them as important locations in Louisiana. He listened curiously to her explanation, returning to his bed and sitting down.

"That makes sense, I guess."I wonder what weird powers everyone else has?

Jack noticed Auduliya looking towards the bathroom, and it reminded him of something he'd been meaning to ask.
"Oh yeah, how will the restroom situation work? Because you're a... and I'm a... yeah." he asked awkwardly.

Maya and Iona Valeris

Maya smiled slightly. "I suppose you'd actually be right about that, given I do have super strength, although not right now. Sis, explain yours first, they're simpler."

"I transmute matter into antimatter and vice versa." Iona explained. "Once it's antimatter, I can stabilize it so it doesn't try eating matter, craft and destabilize it so that it does eat matter to cause some rather large but contained explosions. Your turn."

"Mine, uh..." Maya blinked. "My powers are, for some reason, tied to the Zodiac and Tarot of Earth. I get one Zodiac, which changes when the Zodiac changes, one of the twenty-two Major Arcana cards and one of the four Minor Arcana at any time. Some do different things, some do the same thing and get more powerful when the Zodiac and Arcana do the same thing, some I can't use except under particular circumstances. Generally, though, I'm a bit of a Swiss Army Knife of powers. Nothing overwhelmingly strong, but lots and lots of stuff."

"And her personality changes when she swaps between them, with the biggest changes being the Zodiacs, then Major Arcana and finally Minor Arcana." Iona added. "So get ready for that. For reference, what do you have active now, Maya?"

"Uh... Leo, Judgement and Swords, I think."

Iona made a 'mhm' sound before continuing. "Leo overrides Judgement, since that's meant to make her more reflective on her actions, but really all it does is make her not a completely unbearable arrogant bitch. Leo also makes her proud, while Swords incites her to be more... Aggressive against authority. Combine those, well, you get the door-kicking."

"Decent enough summary." Maya shrugged.

Eric Weaver

"It seems the two of you really are fascinating. One, controlling the most destructive substance in the universe, and the other having a unique array of abilities that change throughout the year," he replied, before pushing himself to his feet.

"It was wonderful to meet the three of you, Maya, Iona, and Ethan. If any of you need anything, just know that I'd be more than happy to help, and my room is just down the hall."

And with that, he left the room, leaving the damaged door open behind him.
He stepped into his dorm room, only to find an 8' tall gelatinous woman had beaten him there.

"You're something different," he stated, a sudden sense of curiosity bubbling up inside him.

Consciousness without any apparent nervous system, no internal organs,
just a uniform substance that is almost translucent... Is this a new form of cell that functions in whatever way needed?

...this is going to be a fun one.

Xara turned to see Eric, tilting her head slightly as she looked at her roomate. He had white hair and though he looked human at first he had a few odd differences. She couldn't quite put her finger on what it was, but he was a strange one. "You could say the same about yourself." She commented idly. The way he observed her too gave Xara an eeire yet familiar feeling, like she was with the scientists again.

"I'm Xara." She spoke. The second part of the question giving her pause. "Well, I'm a Xyrixma." She continued. "I'm told that we're quite unfamiliar to you humans. There aren't many of us around, so that makes sense I suppose."

She then got her clothes out. A stretchy suit that was, in it's normal form. She put her feet into it, then quite suddenly slipped into it, oozing in as the suit covered everything but her neck and head. She looked at her hand, clenching fingers and then relaxing them as she tested the material. "Weird." She muttered.

Her cells undoubtedly interact differently with her shard,

Laying down one of the beds, the one he was going to use, he continued the conversation, "So, what brings you to the school?"

“Ah, ye olde bathroom question,” I said, going with a certain way of saying it that might be considered amusing, “Some things never do change. I don't think it'll be a problem as long as there is either a lock or some other way to indicate one of us is in the restroom and not decent. Then there's just the matter of changing, which is easy to fix if one of us just uses the restroom for teeth brushing and what have you while the other changes clothes. That's always how me and my little brother dealt with privacy.”

As I gave my idea for keeping us from being seen in our underwear by one another, I folded my underpants and socks. I rushed through them since I wanted to actually go look in the bathroom and unpack my toiletries. I thought I might have to figure out exactly how to use one of the toiletries soon, since I was still ironing out some my body’s internal kinks, particularly with the digestive and endocrine systems, particularly the endocrine system.
