The only way you can become a slave is that you cheat someone for their money or property or steal it from them. When you are found guilty by the judge, the damaged can either forgive you, sentence you to prison or to "serfdom". You will stay in both prison or serfdom for so long, until you have paid back twice as much as you have stolen or damaged. If you have enough money to pay it directly, you'll have to do so AND go to prison for a period the judge decides. And if you'll never have enough time or ability to pay it back, even your family can get charged, although not that hard.
