EPHYRA: Fat shaming in the Undying Empire

The Ephyral race is naturally inclined to acceptable physical dimensions. Males are larger in frame and height, as well as heavier, when compared to females. It is the culture of the Ephyral that drives the lack of many fat people in the empire. Both boys and girls go topless from their birth until they legally become adults; boys became men at age sixteen, and girls become women when they have their first menstrual blood. Because both boys and girls are kept topless, there is natural incentive to maintain a body image deemed both acceptable to the individual and society. Males typically press for the kind of body-structure one might find in a typical man who works out perhaps a once or twice a week. Nothing comparable to professional athletes, weightlifters or other sports specialist, but enough to remain in shape. Females in contrast don't aim to build body mass in either muscle nor fat, and usually keep themselves ideally slim.

Therefore, it is rare to see a fat Ephyral person, but in the case that it does happen, the socially predatory nature of the Ephyral ensures that this person is made to feel the consequences of their inaction towards themselves. Whilst not outright fat-shaming, no attempts are made to make obesity or being overweight seem in any way desirable or beneficial. Ads that showcase both men and women with what are considered 'ideal bodies' are not taken down because it might offend the few overweight people in the empire. In a way, the obesity takes care of itself. The chance that an overweight Ephyral man or woman will actually breed is severely diminished compared to a man or woman of accepted body proportions, simply due to the way the Ephyral seek utmost pleasure from sexual partners before committing to any idea of child-bearing. Because of this, there's little in the way of 'fat genes' to be used as an excuse for an individual being overweight, rendering each overweight person in Ephyra completely in control for their own exponential weight gain.

They aren't made to feel ashamed, they are just reminded that they won't be treated equally when they choose to make themselves physically inferior.

Fat shaming is not considered socially acceptable.

However, because most Ling are rather thin, an overweight person stands out and may worry more about their weight than they would in a different country.

Yes. It is encouraged by the state.

Increasing obesity was identified as a public health crisis by the Austrasian Senate in the 21st Four Year Plan and all relevant bureaucracies were directed to counter it, a directive which has carried over into the 22nd plan which also includes the target of halting the rise in obesity in children. Physical education has been upgraded to a core subject of the School Leaving Exam by the Inspectorate of Education, meaning it is impossible to receive the equivalent of secondary school diploma without a passing grade absent a certified disability, and the government coordinates with major advertisers and media producers to discourage the normalization of obesity in media; though this is not law. The Inspectorate of Education is also working closely with the School Circles* to allocate more time to physical education and to raise physical education standards. The Inspectorate of Public Health and Ministry of Finance have collaborated with the Riche Healthcare Circle to implement a system of user fees for adults with idiopathic obesity. The Inspectorate of Child Protection has identified idiopathic childhood obesity as a form of child abuse and the Inquisitors of the Family Court have been directed by the Ministry of Justice to prioritize investigation & prosecution of parents who have flagrantly disregarded the health of their children, to make an example of them. The Ministry of Public Information has organized the publicization of a number of public confessions (publicly confessing to a crime, acknowledging responsibility and asking forgiveness is a common sentence in Austrasia, it is also frequently volunteered by the accused in hopes of demonstrating regret to the sentencing courts) by parents found guilty of such crimes.

*Circles, Kreis, is the standard term in Austrasia for an official industry association. The School Circles are literally the associations of private and public schools which collectively make up the Austrasian Education system. While the Riche Healthcare Circle is itself an association of lesser Circles representing various aspects of the healthcare industry.

Fat shaming is common among the people of Tyskylvania.
In fact, the Empress herself fat shames many fat and overweight persons when they're right in front of her, calling them "pigs", "useless" and even "walking slaps of animal fat."
So, yeah, fitness is taken quite seriously. It wouldn't be surprising if the Empress outlawed obesity and such.

Yes, the Sleetavian people have a warrior culture that has survived to this day, and being fat and overweight is anathema to that culture. Therefore, if a couple of Sleetavians see a guy who could lose a pound or two, they will not hesitate to point that fact out and maybe jeer at him a little.

Fat shaming is deemed socially unacceptable in Valkhyne, not because there is a lack of health consciousness, but because citizens tend to think that making someone feel terrible about their body just incentivizes more eating. Regardless, obesity isn't nearly as problematic in Valkhyne as it is in the capitalist nations, naturally.

The Montesardi Republic and obesity

Officially, the Montesardi Federal Government has no policies that engage in activities that "fat-shame" individuals. However, there are numerous health programmes under the Ministry of Public Health that actively combat obesity as it is a health risk for the nation. Fortunately, obesity is rare in the nation, with only 3.5% of the population being classified as obese. Being obese can make it more expensive for an individual to ensure themselves and, in some cases, actually leading to the individual to pay more in taxes than their counterparts. It is to be noted that this does not apply to individuals who are "fat" or "chubby". These policies only apply to those who have been classified as obese per norms of the Ministry of Public Health.

With regards to social acceptance of obese individuals; a report conducted by the INAGE (National Institute of Analysis and Geography) reports that around 24% of obese individuals state that they were verbally harassed. Of these cases, 17% were also physically assaulted. Nonetheless, the Montesardi legal system has successfully prosecuted 89% of all these reported cases.

Fat shaming is highly regarded as inhumane and cruel. People who fat shame tend to be against the West Esunian governement and are not socially accepted. However, very few people tend to fat shame one another due to "morales and opinions..." The West Esunian Department of Well Being recommends that people maintain a healthy weight due to health issues and the recent increase in the amount of people diagnosed with Heart Disease. Some people feel offended when it comes to this but you can't please everyone nowadays... '—'

The hatred of the obese in Charnea is twofold. For one, Charnea is a proud warrior culture that prizes mental and physical strength, and as such views very negatively upon those that are obese. It is seen not only as an obvious physical detriment that makes one weaker, but as a sign of mental weakness as well. Perhaps more importantly in the current political climate, obesity is seen as a sign of opulence and wealth, and is therefore despised. More than 3/4ths of the nation lives below the poverty line, and starvation is a serious danger. Most citizens of Charnea barely get enough to survive, let alone gain any weight. Charnea does not have many processed fatty foods either, and fast food simply does not exist. It is very hard to gain weight while living in poverty here. Someone that is truly obese must necessarily be so wealthy that they can afford to overeat.

So, to summarize, most of Charnean society sees those who are significantly overweight as parasitic elites that selfishly indulge their appetite out of sheer weakness of the will, growing fat and soft and pathetic. It is also worth noting that despite recent revolutions and radical progressive steps being taken, Charnea is still a very closed off, conservative nation wherein you haven't a chance in hell of find a safe space, and will necessarily face the scorn of all of society for your transgressions against their values every day of your life until such time as you come to comply with what your fellow Charneans expect from you.

(Of course, the Ministration Authority does provide medical support to those living an unhealthy lifestyle. Charnea has excellent public healthcare, so while you may suffer social consequences for being overweight, the same cannot be said of the medical consequences)

While we are a fairly health-conscious society, we do not shame those who are overweight or obese, although we do attempt to educate on the dangers and health risks when it comes to being overweight.

However, when it comes to women, several of the native tribes preferred women to be on the large side, caught on with the settlers and still exists among some of the current population, even among women. 23% of Gandoorese women believe that being overweight is a part of being attractive and 7% feel that being obese is part of being attractive. (Based on last estimates, 16% of Gandoorese women are overweight and 9% are obese) As this is part of the traditional view of attraction among Gandoor, this is somewhat encouraged by society.

Obesity is relatively low here, so fat shaming is not a huge problem. In general, obesity is seen as a bad thing, because of all the associated health risks, which almost everyone is aware of; as a result, most people exercise regularly to stay in shape. If it is a friend or family member that has gained weight, then we would bring it up, but in a very polite way (Landers are known for their politeness). However, if a Lander saw a random overweight person on the streets, they wouldn't make that big of a deal out of it and try to insult/shame them.

Like Japan, being overweight is rare in Ashkera, with an obesity rate around 3.5%.

(In addition to various taxes and practices encouraging healthy eating and the ready availability of public transport, there is a $500 annual payment for meeting minimum physical civil defense readiness requirements, tax credits for exercise facilities, etc.)

Most Ashkerans assume anyone who isn't a foreigner, who is obese, is suffering from some kind of crippling medical condition, which it would be impolite to comment on.

For the merely overweight, friends may periodically remind them discreetly about their weight, but it is considered impolite for strangers to do this.

Some Ashkerans have gotten in trouble for questioning foreign eating and exercise habits on television and on the Internet. This has compounded an international reputation for being "fitness nuts" even though the government's recommended daily exercises are not particularly strenuous and can be accessed by anyone with an internet connection.

Someone who eats 5,000 calories per day and is morbidly obese is considered shockingly gluttonous. Those who go beyond this are discussed as representing signs of civilizational decay in various foreign countries, but only privately and under pseudonyms on the internet.
