PORTAS ANNOUNCES DEFECTION TO LCLC

Image
Portas stated that the lack of accountability within the PSD made the party 'unelectable'

Lotrič, Midrasia - Former cabinet minister and member of the Social Democratic Party, Melcion Portas has today announced his defection to party Fight Against Corruption (Lutte Contre la Corruption). The move comes amid the ongoing investigation into the affairs of Prime Minister Charles Vauban and a number of other notable figures in the PSD and UDA. The move is likely to be a huge blow to the Social Democrats election hopes, whilst greatly benefiting the LCLC.

Whilst initially serving as Business Secretary in the first Vauban cabinet, Portas left the cabinet in 2015 following a reshuffle, amid speculation that the Prime ministers relationship with Portas had soured over their time in government. Portas was incredibly critical of the PM following his departure, describing Vauban's leadership as 'totalitarian' and criticising the PMs reliance on a 'select circle of special advisers'. Portas was one of the first MPs to call for an investigation into the affairs of the Prime Minister and whilst had attempted to take a position on the investigation committee, he was ruled out due to his previous ties to the PM. Speaking earlier today to supporters Portas had stated that the current state of the PSD has made the party 'unelectable' and that members of the party must be committed to either 'working to internally reform the party', or to providing a 'radical alternative'. Speaking on why chose to split with the PSD, Portas stated that he did not believe internal members were doing enough to combat the PM and that the LCLC provided a 'suitable path to achieve political reform by working with parties across the political spectrum'. Portas' defection has been a major boon to the LCLC, who have jumped nearly ten points within the Polls over the past month. Portas, who has been notable to his active role in ongoing demonstrations in Lotrič and was in the past viewed as a natural successor to Mr Vauban, is likely to only bolster the election prospects of the anti-corruption party.

Sources also suggest that LCLC leaders may be willing to elevate Portas to party leader due to his recent popularity. Speaking on this claims, Portas stated that he had heard 'nothing of the sort' and that 'matters of party organisation are for the current leadership to decide'. Furthermore, other sources suggest that a number of other members of the PSD may be willing to defect to the LCLC, many of whom belong to the reformist wing of the Social Democrats, or are sitting in marginal constituencies. So far, there is no official word on any other defections, however betting companies have odds at 10/1 for Thierry Millón to be the next to defect to the LCLC.

No matter what happens, this election is likely to be monumental in Midrasian history, with both major parties currently involved in political scandals. Political analysts suggest that it may be the time for the smaller parties in Midrasian politics to shine. However, recent polling data suggests that a hung parliament is the most likely outcome, with a coalition agreement necessary to secure a majority within the Public Assembly. Ongoing protests within Lotrič and across the country are also likely to play a major role within the ongoing election, with the number of demonstrators reaching millions in Lotrič alone. The rising number of CGT demonstrators within the city may also see the Socialist Party make considerable gains within the upcoming election. The Royal Standard will continue to provide updates on the situation in election 2017.

Foreign Ministry Announces Appointment to Federal Republic of Malban

The Foreign Ministry appointed Kayo Hatta as ambassador to the Federal Republic of Malban. In return, the Federal Republic has chosen Valil Rucren to become their ambassador to the Royal islands. Hatta, a well respected and lifelong diplomat for each Royal administration, worked previously as the chief negotiator under King Lakanoka on the Gorku-Dansawae-Ajerrin trade agreement before the fatal accident. Ambassador Hatta’s primary role, according to sources within the Administration, are to work with Malban officials to secure natural resources for the Kingdom’s expanding military and infrastructure projects. Talks between Malban’s President Creruil Yatjai and Prime Minister Konohiki are expected to continue over the next few months as the two nations exchange officials and establish friendly relations.

MASS TERROR ATTACK IN CONSTANTIA KILLS 77, INJURES 121.

At 5:33 this afternoon, bombs and gunshots were heard near the Downtown Plaza in Constantia. Police were on the scene, armed with military equipment only to find that the perpetrators had already fled the area. It was later confirmed that atleast 77 people were killed and nearly 121 were left injured. The König gave his speech only thirty minutes after the attack was confirmed it said "This attack on Volgaria and her people will not go unnoticed. As I speak our Police and Armed forces are investigating who the perpetrators were and we intend to bring them to justice. My condolences go out to the families and the victims of this brutal slaughter." The one question amid the paramedics tending to the victims and the police guarding the area was "Who could have done this?"
Image
Aftermath of the attack near downtown Constantia.

No one is 100% sure who the perpetrators of the attack were, however the leading source at the moment says that the attack was most likely done by Wusten nationalists. On the other hand, some fear this attack by have been perpetrated by a new rebel organization in Volgaria and that this incident is only one of many future attacks. What is clear however is that this was not planned and done by a small group of people, but by a larger and more powerful organization operating within Volgaria looking to claim more lives of innocents for their sick goals.

Updates will continue to be posted, stay tuned in to find out more.

Report: Frestovenia Declines to Calculate AeiaVision Results

Postby Onza » Wed Jun 28, 2017 11:19 am

KUNTA, ONZA - Frestovenian statisticians that volunteered to collect votes for AeiaVision II and compile results have indicated that they are not going to calculate this rendition of the contest's results, sources familiar with internal communications revealed Tuesday.

"It is rather disappointing that we will not see the amount of time we spent selecting the right song come to fruition," noted Vice President Desta Tendai, who has been a big fan of the AeiaVision contests since the first rendition last year. "There were so many good submissions, I was personally interested in seeing which one would be crowned the winner," she said.

Frestovenia has not publicly announced a reason behind the move, though sources indicated that there may have been frustration among Frestovenian pollsters due to a reported lack of votes submitted by the deadline, though the OCNA is unable to independently verify this.

At the time of this writing, several independent Onzaian statistics firms have announced that they will consider requesting permission to take over the calculation of the results. "We would hate to see the votes and submissions go to waste," a press release from statistics group Composite Prime, Inc stated. "We are working internally to see about getting access to the votes so that we can track down those who have not voted and compile the final results."

GAYS BEATEN AS SOLDIERS RETURN HOME!
David Risikko

Today, the victorious armies of Newrey returned home after months abroad fighting in the Johkan War with an international coalition, alongside fellow Drago Entente ally Aquidneck, before making a quick stop in Onza to help train their forces effectively to deal with piracy that occurs within the area, as well as a rumoured deterrent to Onza's more unpredictable neighbours. The forces of Newery were congratulated for their ability in drawing a good number of Johkan forces away from their main front by launching a diversionary attack on it western coast. Total coasts for Newrey was 250 killed and 370 injured. The dead were returned to Newrey the previous week and buried in either the National Fyrdmanfulltume Cemetery or personal burial locations.

Image

However, as a victory parade was commencing in Cyningburgh, a series of counter protests took place, largely surrounding Newrey's treatment of the LGBT community, which has been condemned by a number of nations internationally. However, while protests are permitted in most circumstances, the right to protest was removed for the day to allow it to focus solely on the returning soldiers and their victory.

Unhappy, a number of underground LGBT organisations planned and attempted to protest, however overwhelming numbers of Police were able to intervene quickly and prevented it spiralling out of control.

Currently, 83% of Newreyan citizens are in favour of the current treatment of LGBT, while a smaller 4% would prefer to see much harsher treatment. With such large amounts of public opinion against them, several organisations have sworn to combat this and attempt to turn the tide of it, however a number of restrictions are placed on their ability to take part in government and schooling, leading to large numbers of immigration (largely to Aquidneck, the only country which LGBT individuals are permitted to emigrate to) and homelessness.

Arms deals gain controversy and open jobs

As DA-MP Arms, the government run arms supplier for much of the Newreyan military, finalised deals with a number of nations, their particular dealings with the nation of Volgaria gained the ire of many a man. Volgaria is a country on Rennekka that has been lambasted for its dictatorial way of ruling in the past, as well as its treatment of LGBT individuals, similar to Newrey. DA-MP arranged for the construction of an Archlight-class light fast fleet tanker, four of which are already under construction for the Shipfyrd, as well as arranging for the current stock of 500 Wyvern-2 MBTs to be sold to the country in batches of 100, as the Landmight prepares to take on Defender-class MBTs.

The construction of other ships for the nation of Onza and other nations has opened up the construction section of the economy for numerous jobs, employing somewhere around 400 jobs involved in the construction alone, as well as other relating to secondary services that assist. This has been championed as a promising step forwards in the economic growth of Newrey.

OPINION: Liberals Win the Night

Postby Onza » Thu Jun 29, 2017 11:27 am

Liberals are not the underdogs of this election
By Ziauddin Rajab, Contributing Columnist

KUNTA, ONZA - When the media labels the conclusion of a sporting match as an "upset victory," the understanding is generally that the winning team was not expected to win. Almost uniformly, however, is it true that the doubt surrounding said team's victory is a conclusion derived from an analysis of statistics, individual player performances, and the team's overall track record.

So why is it that when Dr. Sajjad Isa of the Liberal Party blew his opponent out of the water in the first presidential debate, the media declared Dr. Isa's victory an "upset victory?" In fact, in the OCNA's televised post-debate coverage, prominent anchor Qamar El-Mofty appeared to have a meltdown at his panel's conclusion that the Liberals were victorious. "I don't think we should be so quick to name [Dr. Isa] the winner of the debate," said El-Mofty after a brief period of silence following the panel's two minute discussion that led them to the unanimous agreement that Dr. Isa was, in fact, the decisive victor.

Although this bias is nothing new to those of us who have long voted for Liberal candidates, it is particularly disappointing this time around due to the gravity of the mandates that our next president will be slapped with on the first day in office. As our current president recklessly betrays centuries of established non-interventionism and continues to choke what little of a private sector exists with punitive taxes and over-the-top, unnecessary regulations, this election is perhaps the most important I've seen in my lifetime.

To be fair, the Liberals haven't always yielded the strongest candidates. In fact, Xolani Kojo's victory in the last election can be almost entirely attributed to the lack of a better option. Go back and read my columns during that time period - I was highly critical of Liberal candidate Ghalib Ahmed, who in spite of being ideologically sound and consistent, was not the party's ideal candidate and not one that I could throw my support behind. This cannot be charged this time around, however, and last night's performance by Dr. Isa is definitive proof.

Perhaps the highlight of last night was when the clearly-biased panel of moderators tried to have their "gotcha" moment with Dr. Isa. The panel asked about the candidate's campaign pitch to roll back "punitive" environmental regulations (although those are Dr. Isa' words, I endorse them wholly), which certainly elicited a grin from all Dem Soc voters desperate to see their candidate get a chance to shine even a little from the brutal thrashing he had received insofar. Dr. Isa's response was masterful and tact, and even seemed to surprise the moderators:

"Naturally, preservation of this planet and its environment are priorities of mine. I am not a foolish denier of the impact that us humans have on the environment and the world that we live in. However, this government has used a pure mission - the regulation of what we do to the environment - they've used that pure mission as a facade, a disguise for them to cripple the private sector that the Dem Socs so vehemently hate and despise."

The response also garnered a long round of applause from the audience.

Dr. Isa obviously has the charisma to resonate with voters and be diplomatic with world leaders. Meanwhile, Akbar Saab of the Dem Socs fumbled over his words and was overly-reserved and almost shy in his performance. Rarely did he elicit much applause from the audience, and even when his responses were respectable, the poor delivery killed any sort of galvanizing effect that it may have potentially had.

Two debates remain before the election, though with a start this fantastic, I don't foresee the momentum of the Liberal resurgence letting up. Dr. Isa has promised to restore moderation and balance to a government that has gone overboard and abused the mission of the UDE established in its Constitution in the name of furthering their own personal agendas. Hopefully the media will realize that in spite of their labels, the Liberals are not the underdogs in this situation, they are the heavyweight contenders.

"Ancient Ruins Uncovered In Hlaaral Mountains"

Image

Two days ago, the Vvardeni Archaeological Institute discovered high in the Hlaaral Mountains, which run
like a spine across Vvarden, a completely untouched ruin of an ancient Vvardeni fort. The fort appears
to date from before the Venerable Empire and already there are signs of occupation stretching up until
the 10th century. Some have wondered whether this ruin is the remains of a fort that the sons of the
Last Emperor, Ralos XVII, allegedly fled to in their hopeless campaign to drive out the Almanns after
the Venerable Empire collapsed. Projects are underway to uncover more of the ruins and to collect as
much archaeological data as possible.

"Vokun Census Begins"

Image

A census that will determine the numbers of the Vokun people within Vvarden will begin shortly.
The Vokun are a distant relative of the Vvardeni, who speak a somewhat similar language, but
instead are mostly nomadic, living the ways of the proto-Vvardeni. Efforts have been made to
protect the Vokun way of life, especially in this age of increasing modernization. Vokun in the
cities however, are much less traditional as they are more exposed to Vvardeni customs. The
survey will hopefully allow the Senate to accurately track the number of Vokun within Vvarden
as due to the nomadic lifestyle of the Vokun, they often wander outside of Vvarden's borders.

Infrastructure Projects Begin

The Senate and the Grand Speaker have announced the start of a new infrastructure project, which will modernize transport around Vvarden, especially in rural and isolated areas, such as in the Hlaaral Mountains and in the Vokun Steppes in the east. The project includes the expansion and construction of superhighways stretching from Zoroshthurvan all the way down to Vvarden's main commercial port at Yir Dirthaur. With the advice of Tir Lhaeraidd, a new commercial port in order to improve the influx of global trade into Vvarden will be constructed in a sheltered bay, in the fishing town of Yir Validis. Roads to and from neighbouring countries and nearby states will also be improved as a result, and several new train lines will be laid across Vvarden. The Senate has also announced incentives to promote business within Vvarden with the recent isolationist period ending. The goal of the incentives is to motivate more trade in the region and to export many more raw materials to many nations in Rennekka, Asura and Frigidarium. The ideal Vvardeni economic situation in the future is that as a result of broad government investment, combined with the nationalisation of the roads and railways, especially in the central and northwestern regions, Vvarden will become a major trade power on Rennekka and will as a result become a more wealthy and economically progressive nation. The Senate has also invested into several schemes to build deep sea oil rigs in the Rennekkan Pass in order to provide a greater boost to Vvarden's economy, despite the global shift towards renewables. The oil rigs are expected to begin the planning phase of construction later this year, and are estimated to be fully completed by 2020.

Monarchist Rally in Zoroshthurvan Draws Thousands

A monarchist rally held in Zoroshthurvan today drew close to twenty thousand people as they chanted out slogans calling for a return to a monarchy. Monarchism in Vvarden is a controversial issue, as the head candidate for the next monarch is the current Grand Speaker, who has said many times that if a monarchist party succeeded, he would abdicate the moment he got to the throne as he does not believe he should hold any title that isn't democratic. Many monarchists seek for a return to the days when Vvarden was one of the most advanced civilizations in the world, the Venerable Empire, with an Emperor at its head. This movement has indeed been rebirthed after the end of the dictatorial, staunchly anti-monarchist movements by Ineyan Samaendas and his successor, Revthyn Odurinil, who famously stated in the constitution at the time that "No man can usurp the reigns of power and call himself a monarch". Many seats within the Senate are taken up by monarchist groups, and time will tell whether the Vvardeni monarchy will be restored, with either the Grand Speaker Ralos Nivastar Drulonil tred Zorosh or his sister Adelaziah Nivastar Drulonil tred Zorosh becoming a unified Vvarden's first monarch since the Celestial Kingdom.

Vvarden Begins Naval Exercises In Rennekkan Sea

The Grand Speaker has announced Vvardeni naval exercises to begin shortly in the Rennekkan Sea. The Vvardeni navy, small in comparison to many other Rennekkan nations, consisting of 54 ships, most of which are outdated, including 2 destroyers, 3 missile destroyers, 13 submarines and 17 missile boats, will be moving into the Rennekkan Pass within the next several days and will remain there for several months. In this time, the Vvardeni navy will be performing several crucial exercises such as fighter combat operations from Vvarden's sole aircraft carrier as well as passing maneuvers among naval vessels, anti-submarine exercises and replenishment-at-sea drills. The Senate has also informed other nearby nations to the exercises in the hopes that Vvarden won't be seen as being aggressive in the area. The navy, which is in need of overhaul, is planned to be upgraded soon, and the ships, some dating as far back as the 80s, will be either scrapped and replaced or given a complete renovation. Several new ships are also being planned to increase the abilities and strength of the outdated navy.

More news updates will occur shortly.

SEIZURE OF DRUGS REACH UNPRECEDENTED LEVELS!
David Risikko

The Green Ocean Task Force, a pet project of the multinational organisation called the Drago Entente, has conducted a "record" number of drug busts in the Green over the past several months, confiscating 3,300 kilograms of narcotics over the course of 10 raids, according to a recent Task Force news release.

The string of busts began in early March when the Royal (Aquid) Navy frigate ARNS Cinto impounded about 800 kilograms of hashish, a cannabis extract. About two weeks later, the Shipfyrd Havelock-class frigate HMS Patriach of the North found 270 kilograms of heroin in one raid and 500 kilograms of hashish during another, the release said.

The most recent bust began on June 7 when the HMS Fakeham found 260 kilograms of heroin. Searching a ship for drugs can take days, the Green Ocean Task Force press team said in a release. One of the most intricate seizures involved finding 720 kilograms of heroin that was hidden beneath 6,000 pounds of rice, the GOTFPR said.

Confiscated drugs have ranged from heroin and cocaine to cannabis and hashish, said the Task Force release. The Royal Navy's guided-missile destroyer ARNS Struda and guided-missile corvette HMS Lanchard have also conducted drug raids for the task force during the span. Ships from the Royal Ghiss Defence Shipfyrd have also contributed to the effort as well, according to the release.

"Ultimately the continued successes of Green Ocean Task Force is to demonstrate the value of the multinational collective of like-minded nations that make up the Task Force and certify that when navies work together, all nations profit with increased maritime security," said Rear Admiral Bryan Landford, commander of Newreyan Shipyfyrd International Forces and the Green Ocean Task Force, in the Task Force's statement.

The mission of drug seizure, codenamed Operation Runner, is one of the GOTF’s three task forces mandated to protect the Green Ocean and its coasts safe from terrorism and other illegal activities, according to the press release.

OPINION: Most Recent Debate Favors Dem Socs

Postby Onza » Mon Jul 03, 2017 10:46 pm

Dem Socs win, but Liberals still impress
By Yahya Ridwan, Contributing Columnist

KUNTA, ONZA - The second presidential debate began at 9:00 PM and stretched on until just before midnight when the OCNA moderation panel elected to call the debate. For even the most invested of observers, a three hour debate is a nightmare, and the end of the debate would have been welcomed as a relief, particularly for those Onzaians that had to wake up early for work this morning. That is true for an ordinary debate, and last night's presentation of beliefs was in no way ordinary - the debate could have gone on at least another hour and viewers would have remained glued to their screens.

For the first time in well over a decade, we got to see a presidential debate that was genuinely interesting, informative, honest, and even enjoyable at times. Every response from both candidates was poised and dripping with charisma. I could tell as I watched the candidates contemplate issues and listen to their opponent that they were genuinely invested in this country, and that they truly want what they say they want.

It's easy to make the mistake in the elation of witnessing such a refreshing spectacle of forgetting that the two candidates met at the round table last night to disagree and vie to be declared the victor. Opinion writers all over the country have fallen prey to this and declared the match a draw, while some even declined to declare a victor and instead lauded the debate as a whole. As I said above, it was refreshing to watch. It was very promising to me to see that for the first time in a while, both candidates are equally suitable for the presidency, and that the office of the president will ultimately be passed down to the one whose ideology and approach to problem solving is better preferred among Onzaian citizens. One candidate is not vastly more suitable as we've seen in the past, and that isn't because the bar is too low, it's because the bar is very high, and both candidates hit the mark.

At any rate, the ultimate victor of the night was Akbar Saab of the Dem Socs. Even though Sajjad Isa spoke well and raised some good points, Saab won me over with his sensitive and precise use of logic to explain his reasoning behind his positions. Saab attempted this at the first debate, but missed the mark by appearing weak and without passion. He shined brighter than anything I've seen in a while last night, though, and I believe it was his conduct that ultimately paved the path for the respectful exchange that we saw.

Scoring issues specifically, Saab's thorough explanation of his support for broadening international affairs definitely trumped Isa's seemingly-fearful response. Whereas Isa responded in a manner that suggested extreme caution and standoffishness, Saab looked like a true leader as he stressed the things we stand to learn from other cultures and the enrichment of the national welfare that is possible from interacting with neighbors. When Isa used his response to a question from a concerned small business owner to cast a negative light on the Dem Socs' private sector policies, Saab assured the owner that the party manifesto had been updated in order to reflect input from small business owners. He didn't stop there, however. Saab went on to stress that his administration would prioritize the natural growth of the private sector, although he did not undo his promise to consumers to ramp up consumer protection laws.

Isa used a question about education to remind us about the Liberal plan to allow small forms of privatization of education. Saab quickly retorted by mentioning that recent data placed the UDE among the top in the world for education, which garnered applause from the audience.

The second presidential debate was great to watch. So far my scorecard adds up to a tie - hopefully for the sake of this country the third and final debate doesn't let us down.

TYRONOVA DECLARES WAR ON WUSTENLAND

Image
Tyronovian troops practice in squads

Rising tensions between Tyronova and neighbouring Wustenland reached their tipping point last week, as Wusten soldiers mistakenly fired upon and damaged a commercial Tyronovian passenger plane passing nearby. According to Wusten sources, the "unidentified plane" was "inside the 'no-fly zone", causing them to open fire on the "suspicious" flight. However, the pilot and co-pilot of the plane reported the plane as being "beyond the no-fly zone" and that "a nearby tropical storm warning forced an alteration of the route, thus the plane was flying slightly closer to shore". Tyronovian ambassadors to Wustenland argue against Wusten's case, since "even if [the plane] was flying close to the 'no-fly zone', Wusten soldiers should have identified the plane before giving the order to open fire".

Rohst, Tyronova's closest ally, had already been requesting for Tyronova's assistance in its war with Wustenland since at least a month earlier. With Volgaria also joining in against Wustenland, Tyronovian assistance was initially deemed "unnecessary" and "too costly", however, recent events, including the aforementioned incident, prompted the Tyronovian government to re-evaluate its position on the Wusten situation, culminating in the government's majority vote to take action and declare war against Wustenland. Although the government had already made the decision to go to war with Wustenland, the holding of a plebiscite to veto the decision was still declared necessary by the Tyronovian Parliament.

The plebiscite, held last Friday, ended in favour of the government's decision to go to war with Wustenland. Sources hint that a plan of invasion had already been drawn up long before, at the first signs of conflict. A formal declaration of war by Tyronova against Wustenland was sent yesterday, the fourth of July. Critics claim that the decision is "impulsive", but supporters cite the lack of a formal Wusten apology for the incident as clear evidence that relations between the two countries had already broken down.

FEATURE: How Banks Outsmarted Robbers in Onza

Postby Onza » Tue Jul 04, 2017 11:31 am

A look at how security reforms enacted by banks have eliminated the standard bank heist
By Shamsuddin Harun, Reporter

It was your typical midsummer day in downtown Akhmis, Onza on 4 July 2001. The sun beamed down with heartless intensity as it normally does, and yet voices of walking Onzaians were so prominent that the sound they formed was the distinct ambiance associated with the city. Among these pedestrians was Faris Tarek, a hair stylist who was 33 at the time. Tarek was following his weekly Wednesday routine - head into town, pick up his paycheck from work, swing by the bank and deposit the check. While today checks are typically deposited via pictures taken on mobile devices or simply inserted into ATMs, 2001 was a different time in Onza, and those familiar will remember having to physically go inside the bank and see a teller in order to make a deposit.

And that's exactly what Tarek was going to do. What Tarek was unaware of, however, was that what was normally a standard and boring venture to the bank was going to become a day that he'd never forget. The bank, Karim and Trustees, is one of the largest in the nation, and its Akhmis location that Tarek was visiting was one of the most grandiose buildings to house a bank at the time. "I walked in the bank just as I would have any other day. I was ready to deposit my check and get it over with as I had a lot of other things to do later on," he said. Tarek recalls approaching the tellers and uttering "hello" before everything went south. "I remember the teller just ignoring my words and gazing over my shoulder. His look of concern made me turn around to see what he was looking at, and that's when I saw what was going on."

Four men dressed in all black, sport leathers, and motorcycle helmets entered the bank armed with assault rifles and carrying bags of equipment. The attire wasn't for appearance's sake, however - the men had arrived on sports bikes that the police later learned were modified with bulletproof tires and faster motors. Tarek and the others in the bank were immediately shouted to the ground by the men at gunpoint. The only two security guards on site at the bank immediately surrendered and later attributed their lack of intervention to being "virtually unarmed" in comparison to the heisters. The four men then began to tie the hands of everyone and moved the now-hostages out of the view of the front door.

Tarek says that the heisters then left the hostages to their own volition, and as they were cracking the vault, the hostages concluded that the men were likely looking to avoid firing their weapons due to the fact that it would alert neighboring buildings. Before they could act on this conclusion, however, another citizen, Rahat Taha, entered the bank and was immediately shot in the chest by the robbers. Taha may have ultimately survived, but Tarek says the incident convinced the hostages to refrain from intervening in the robbery.

The robbers forced a teller to open the vault and within ten minutes, they escaped with almost $12 million. Only after their departure were police notified of the incident, who responded and freed the hostages.

Gun ownership in Onza for purposes other than authorized hunting has been outlawed since the 1960s. In spite of this, the men were able to purchase military-grade firearms from a black market that investigators believe was based in Saraibia. The modified bikes were purchased legally from four different dealerships over the course of a year, and had been modified by the men in an abandoned garage on the outskirts of the town that was used as their base of operations. Karim and Trustees could have done nothing to prevent this aspect of the robbery. However, the incident garnered a tremendous amount of media attention and coverage, and although Congress declined to pass a law governing bank security, the banks stepped up and outsmarted robbers themselves.

If the crew (which was never caught) attempted the same robbery today, they would certainly fail. For starters, the vast majority of banks across Onza now have metal detectors at the door. Armed security dispatches are common and usually operate on a regular radio check that when failed results in a precautionary call to the police. Even if the robbers managed to get past this portion, tellers would have little reason to be intimidated as their section of most banks are now secured by keypad-locked doors and bulletproof glass. If a bank robber managed to infiltrate this area (an attempted bank robbery in Kunta in 2012 saw this example come to reality), only the bank manager is provided a one-use security code per day. When this code is entered, most banks have a lengthy time lock that must countdown before the vault will open. When the time lock is activated, police in the area make a call to the bank just to verify that the vault is being opened with authorization.

The robbery at Karim and Trustees may have spawned the attention that led to these changes, but several bank robberies between then and 2013 (when the last successful bank robbery occurred) were actually what led to banks implementing all of these safety measures. Banks could have continued going cheap on security and risking its employees and its customers, instead opting to accept government reimbursement on money lost during robberies. They did the opposite, however, and invested heavily in security. Many banks paid analysts to look at robberies and recommend measures that could prevent such incidences in the future.

Bank robberies aren't limited to just the physical location of the bank, however. Banks regularly move money between banks via a fleet of armored trucks. After one of these was successfully robbed in 2005, banks continued on their crusade against robbery by revising policies and procedures to make armored truck robbery virtually impossible. Armored trucks are now equipped with blast-resistant doors and carry armed officers in the back with money at all times. Money is also equipped with electronic dye packs that are triggered if money is removed from the truck without first disarming the packs. Finally, drivers now vary routes every day in order to minimize the chance of being observed by potential robbers.

ATMs are another thing that have been targeted by bank robbers attempted to think outside the box of the standard hold-up. Robbers have successfully sawed open ATMs before and made off with vast amounts of money, while others have even electronically breached ATMs using modified software. While these robberies still occur, they are the latest that banks are trying to analyze and prevent by implementing safeguards regardless of cost.

While many complain of added inconvenience of security, banks are now much safer than they once were, Tarek says. "I think anyone complaining about inconvenience would change their tune if they were put in the position I was put in 16 years ago," he said.

PRELIMINARY STRIKES HIT WUSTEN HARD

Image
Tyronovian artillery pieces

Early this morning, Tyronovian artillery batteries opened fire on the Wusten border defences, reportedly damaging roads and utility systems in the area, as well as wounding several Wusten troops and destroying at least twelve military vehicles. Jet bombers have conducted runs against the Wusten defences, although no data has been given on their results. The damage done to the Wusten defensive lines continues to increase under the periodical artillery bombardment. While Tyronovian troops had already taken up defensive positions on the border since Monday, many Wusten defences along the border with Tyronova have not been in good condition since the late 90s, as more efforts were directed towards the Rohst-Wusten border instead. The Tyronovian Bundesheer claims that the Wusten defence force along the Wusten-Tyro border is "severely lacking in proper equipment" and is "short of manpower due to the consistent draw of defensive forces to the west and southeast". Nevertheless, "terrain favourable to a defensive stance may still slow down the offensive slightly".

Neutral military analysts predict that the artillery strikes on Wusten positions will likely continue for extended periods of time since the long line of hills along the border may provide much-needed cover for Wusten troops against a direct attack. Tyronovian soldiers seem cheerful and eager to have "[their] go at the Wustens", as one anonymous Obergefreite put it. The good morale of Tyronovian soldiers is a stark contrast to those on the Wusten side. The war-weary Wusten soldiers see the Tyronovian offensive as yet another nail in their coffin; only a handful of them are said to continue to fight with vigour. Undoubtedly, this difference in 'will to fight' will see even more military gains by Tyronova, as the Wusten soldiers get bogged down in a spiral of despair.

The Wusten-Tyro border had already been mostly evacuated by Tuesday, under the imminent threat of war, but several Wusten citizens are still in the area, according to Wusten authorities. Tyronovian authorities and the Tyronovian Bundesheer have sworn to protect the lives of innocent civilians during the conflict, however, to minimise accidental civilian casualties, Tyronova plans to allow a full day for locals in the area of operations to evacuate completely, after which the invasion force will be inserted. Tyronovian citizens in currently Wustenland are advised to stay indoors if evacuation is impossible. Search and rescue teams will be sent out after the offensive advances further into Wusten territory.

VOLGARIAN TROOPS PREPARE FOR DEPLOYMENT TO WUSTENLAND

This morning it was announced by George Kraus the Supreme Field Marshal of Volgaria, that the deployment of over 250,000 troops to Wustenland would begin. The first unit to be sent will be the 5th Volgarian Army a unit that consists of 100,000 Troops. Overtime however the military plans to deploy 4 more Field Armies into Wustenland depending on how long the war lasts and if the situation calls for more troops.

Volgarian Navy troopships will begin the transportation of the Volgarian 5th Army to the front in less than a weeks time, however all planned operations from the military are classified. Tanks, AFV's, Artillery and other equipment are being rapidly prepared for potential use in Wustenland. High ranking officers feel that the war may come to a close sooner than expected as the Wusten's are now facing the Armies of Rennekkas most powerful nations. The Konig is scheduled to give a speech later on today about the future of Volgaria in this conflict.

Entente meeting with Torroso goes well

By: Aristo Scelfo
6 July, 2017

Torden, Aquidneck - Aquidish officials took part in the conference in Constantia, Volgaria to discuss the Torrosoian Strait Crisis with allies in the Drago Entente and Torroso. The conference was held in the Royal Affairs Chamber of the Grand Palace and was hosted by the Volgarian government. The Volgarians are allied with Torroso and are friendly with the government in Torden and wished to see the crisis resolved without further escalation in tensions.

The meeting has been claimed as a success by all parties involved and it seems that the crisis has largely been resolved. The Royal Navy announced that it would reduce the amount of ships patrolling the strait and move them farther out into the Opal Ocean or along the Onzaian coast. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Remo Mattei, said that "the meeting was a great success." He went on to say, "I want to thank our Volgarian friends for hosting the meeting and allowing us the opportunity to speak with our Torrosian counter-parts in a neutral way. I do believe they deserve a great deal of credit for helping us get the outcome we have. I also want to thank our allies Newrey, Onza, and Vrnallia for the parts they have played."

Prime Minister Ruperto Petrillo has seen his approval ratings go up in the days following the meeting. Many Aquidish people are happy to not see a conflict so close to home. The governing Progressive-Liberal Coalition had been struggling with improving the approval ratings. The Senate goes on recess soon and this foreign policy win will allow them to face constituents at home with some good news to back them up.

Entente announces first expo

Perino, Aquidneck - The Drago Entente announced its plan to hold the first Entente Expo. The event aims to showcase what the Entente is and what benefits members get from it. Insiders say it is designed to show citizens from member states that being in the alliance is a good thing while also showing other nations what they are missing out on. The two day event is being held in Kunta which is the capital city on Onza. Planners say the city was chosen to show that the Entente is not an Asuran dominated organization and that all the member states are equals. Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Renata Panzera will be in Kunta representing Aquidneck.

There will be three main speakers at the summit who will each address different parts of the Entente. The President of Onza, Xolani Kojo, will talk about the alliance's work in combating piracy and terrorism on the high seas. This effort is a major reason Onza joined the alliance and is seen as one of the alliances greatest works. The Seretary-General, Lino Minicozzi, will talk about the economic and political benefits to joining the alliance, and the Supreme Commander, William Blake, will discuss the military aspects of the alliance. After the speeches there will be an question and answer segment that is open to attendees and the press. We at the Messenger will bring that to you live on our website as well as have a full write up in the next days paper.

On the second day of the conference the member states will gather to discuss some issues and goals going forward for the alliance. So far nothing has been released on what exactly the representatives will be discussing, but we expect that the press conference will shed some light on the topics. It is thought that high on the list will be Saraibia. The former Aquidish colony has been a hotbed for terrorism in many different forms. Newrey and Aquidneck have both been the victims of terrorist attacks carried out by Saraibians. Onza, which shares a long land and sea border with Saraibia is constantly under threat of attacks from its neighbor. The Entente Council is expected to discuss what can be done now that the Straits Crisis has been resolved.

KUNTA, ONZA - The 1st Drago Entente Summit is slated to begin today at the Noora el-Moussa Exhibition Center in Kunta, Onza. Representatives from several prominent nations around the world are expected to attend the Summit, which is slated to be an informational expo about the Drago Entente and its goals and membership.

President Xolani Kojo will present the first keynote address of the day by talking about piracy and the impact that the Arabekhi Anti-Piracy Task Force - a counter-piracy unit created by the Drago Entente - has had on the seas along Onza's north and east coasts. According to an Ivory Tower spokesman, the President intends to specifically highlight a recent incident where domestic Onzaian pirates were arrested by the Task Force.

Aquidish native and Secretary-General of the Drago Entente Lino Minicozzi will deliver the second keynote. According to the program sent to the OCNA, Mr. Minicozzi will highlight economic and political perks of being an alliance member. Following him will be Newreyan Major-General and Supreme Commander of the Drago Entente Sir William Blake, who will speak about the key aspects of the alliance's military operations.

The Summit will mark the first time that Onza has hosted an event of international, political significance thanks to historical isolationism. Security supervisors in charge of the event reportedly collaborated with Vrnallian security experts to prepare themselves for securing an event of such significance.

TARASANOVIA TROOPS TO SETTLE IN TOWN NORTH OF TARASA

Tarasanovian troops have settled in an area numerous kilometers of the north-west coast of Tarasanovia, towards Saraibia. The comes of the government's plan to find a new water source and to settle around it following the lack of clean and usable water in Tarasanovia, as a result of pollution and other factors. Soldiers have started to settle themselves in the area with approximately 200 men in the location. The new town is the be named Noahsville, with the name coming from the biblical character of Noah, as the findings relate to a story of his.

The town was chosen after long consideration amongst numerous other spots available in noticeably different areas, ranging in places along nearly half of the north space of Tarasanovia's borders. The decision was made several hours ago in parliament house, following a vote between the senate. This had to have been put on hold for a while before it could happen, due to marches and bad public opinion on it. Such attempts have blocked three attempts at the vote beforehand but has finally been able to have taken place.

Troops have moved numerous peoples from the area, as they did not have any rights for the land and therefore could be disposed of simply. These peoples are predicted to be relocated within outskirts of the capital city, and are expected to assimilate easily. The land is a forest biome with a semi-major river in it. Despite it being a forest, there is a clear open breaking directly next to the river where troops to set up camp. Within a months time building will start to happen there with smaller cities to be built along the way with a major highway to be built connecting the places.

(ooc i haven't posted recently because i've sorta become a bit bored with it recently. I felt like writing something and will keep trying to do so, but I am feeling somewhat uninspired to do anything. This post kinda explains an absence in the way of the bill taking a while to pass.)

Third Debate Hard To Call, Opinion Writers Say

Postby Onza » Sat Jul 08, 2017 11:41 pm

Third presidential debate is ultimately a tossup, and that's a good thing
By Zulfiqar Binyamin, Contributing Columnist

KUNTA, ONZA - With the conclusion of last night's third and final presidential debate, I think I speak on behalf of the majority of Onzaians when I declare this election the most exciting and refreshing that I've seen in a very long time. No, really, I'm almost still waiting for the catch to come along.

For the first time since Kayin Ayodele went to head-to-head with Muhsin Shihab in the 1981 presidential election, we saw highly qualified candidates from both parties. On top of this, the candidates both glow with charisma and charm - something that I had begun to fear we'd never see again from the Liberals their last time holding the Ivory Tower in 2002.

For a party that has struggled to brand itself consistently, it's refreshing to see Sajjad Isa bring a packaged, comprehensible image to the Liberal Party. No more are the whispers of disagreements and infighting within the party concerning voters. For those who want a moderate version of the Dem Socs, Isa is the candidate of their dreams. Even voters who favor a hard dismantling of the socialist economy can relate to the candidate's message, which to them is a step in the right direction towards attaining their agenda.

Voters who favor the maintenance of the status quo, perhaps with additional regulations and some revisiting of the current administration's more controversial policies, Akbar Saab does not just work, he shines. His fiery rhetoric and passionate speeches work wonders for the younger voting base of the Dem Socs that continues to push for a movement further to the left.

Last night's debate was a true wrestling match between the two ideologies that are the most prominent in Onza: social democracy and a tempered form of Rhine capitalism. We've seen these two go head-to-head on more occasions than many of us like to admit, but this time around, it was truly a class act - a reminder of why Onza is a beacon of democracy on a continent where people are regularly oppressed.

Question after question was met with an eloquent response from both candidates. The two concisely explained their beliefs and their rationale, and that was it. There was no hostility, no awkward jokes, and no cop-outs. The candidates upheld the integrity that should be expected of candidates seeking the most dignified office in the nation.

With that said, polls are conflicting as to who will come out on top in this election. President Kojo has taken a unique stance in that he has refused to campaign on behalf of Saab, and as a result, the lines of consistent voters have been blurred more than ever before. Frankly, that's a beautiful thing.

LOCAL FRIENDSHIPS AMONGST WAR

Image
Tyronovian and Wusten friends bond together amidst the war

Even with the outbreak of war between Tyronova and Wustenland, most Wusten citizens overseas in Tyronova keep the hope that relations will mend over time. This is especially clear in the case of one Wusten citizen, who goes as Daniel, that was in Tyronova visiting his Tyronovian friend, Johann when the war began a week ago. The two have been close friends since their school days and regularly visit one another. "We always visit each other now and then, this time was like any other to begin with," Daniel told us. "I came over last Sunday and planned to leave that Tuesday. Of course, the war started, so it wasn't safe." Johann continues: "Since he couldn't go back to his home, I've let him stay over here until it is safe for him to return. He is not an enemy... He is my friend". Many others are in a similar situation on both sides of the border, with those unable to return home due to the conflict taking to social media sites to tell their stories. The majority of these people hope for the same thing: that relations can improve and Wusten end the lengthening war with its neighbours soon, so that the citizens overseas in these warring countries can return home.

Queen to Call for Regional Economic Summit in New Hope

New Hope - Continuing on her predecessors' quest to advance the golden age of the Kingdom, Queen Lani Kawana Nakoa plans to issue a call Friday for a regional economic summit to be held in New Hope during the Summer of 2017.

The announcement is slated to come Thursday night in a video message for all Yidao and Catai heads of state, and their people.

"As we've discussed this idea with leaders from the left, right and center of our Realm, they all agree, it's time to act and the Summit is the right place to do this," the Queen plans to say in her remarks. "We have to increase the number of jobs paying livable wages and train many more our of people with the skills to succeed in those jobs."

Royal Hand Ali'lima Konohiki has worked diligently to create new avenues of growth for the Kingdom, and the Economic Summit has his fingerprints all over the event. "The Summit, with its regional infrastructure aligned with the nation's low corporate tax rates, is uniquely positioned to develop and promote a unifying approach to economic growth," a spokesman for the Royal Hand said. "By restoring an upward path not just for our own people but for the people of the region, we can lead by example and provide a positive model for others to follow."

PRINCE KILLED IN BUNGEE-JUMP DISASTER

Image
Bungee jumping is a regular occurrence on the island

New Pale, Almira - The heir to the Midrasian throne, Prince Napoleone has been killed in a freak bungee-jump disaster whilst on honeymoon on the Aquidish island of Almira with his wife the Princess of Sagite the Royal Standard understands. The couple, who were celebrating their recent marriage were due to take a worldwide tour following their departure from Almira. The body of the prince has been recovered from the site and will be flown back to Midrasia later this week. It is understood that the Princess is unharmed, though in a state of severe shock. In light of the event, all campaigning for the Midrasian election will cease until further notice.

The incident is believed to have took place at 13:21 local time when the couple were visiting Urbino gorge, a well known bungee-jumping site on the island. The couple were believed to have visited the site with a group of five others, three of whom had completed their jumps before the Prince. Eye witness reports suggest that when the Prince jumped, his bungee cord snapped, resulting in him falling into the gorge. Resulting search and rescue efforts successfully located the Prince's body two hours after the jump, where he was pronounced dead on site. The Prince's body was then sent to Almira hospital to undergo a post-mortem examination.

Whilst authorities do not believe there was any criminal wrongdoing in the event, several members of the group along with officials from the bungee-jumping company have been held for questioning. AirTours, the company partnered with the bungee-jumping centre has released a statement suggesting that all equipment used by the company was up-to-scratch and that regular checks were made to ensure they remained in working order. Furthermore, the company stated that all officials working on site were highly trained, qualified professionals who regularly supervise and carry out over 100 incident-free jumps every day.

Update: The Royal Standard understands that the King of Midrasia, Luix XII has been admitted to hospital. The royal household has stated that the monarch was greatly shocked by the news and has been admitted to hospital as a precaution due to his ill health. The royal household has stated that they do not believe the King to be in a critical condition.

NEW CORRUPTION ALLEGATIONS SURFACE AGAINST ECONOMIC MINISTER
Image
Terncan Economic Minister Korovin Lavr Sergeyevich

Terncow, Ternca Liberal Terncan Publication NovGolo has today published a groundbreaking whistleblower account, that may suggest the Terncan Minister for Economic Development, Korovin Lavr Sergeyevich used money from the Terncan Sovereign Wealth Fund(Ternca Invesment Corporation), which has played a leading role in the development of the Terncan economy, as well as acquiring assets abroad to create investment returns for the Federation, used funds to bankroll the sale of an expensive flat in Valatin for personal use. The flat was believed to have costed over ₽108,000,000 or 18 mn Aurarians. It was a highly luxurious 4 bedroom flat in Downtown Valatin that according to NovGolo "will function as a vacation home and as a place to stay for business purposes".

The Minister is a prominent figure in Terncan politics, and is heavily influential within the scheme of Terncan state. He was one of the architects of the so called "Miracle on the Terzama River" and built up Ternca's economy to it's current status. Due to his status many political analyst's think this will affect the UTSP as a whole, and the current PM. Socialist Opposition Leader criticized this event and refereed to corruption in the UTSP as "epidemic", the UTSP has announced it will lead investigations into corruption within the party, but many have expected these to be merely for show. The UTSP has much to worry about if these events spiral out of hand, with potential inspiration coming from the Midrasian Spring, so far no protests have come out, and the government is noting this as a "trival" sum when compared to the vast benefit Ternca has gotten from the Minister. The Socialist and Republican Party has asked for inquires into Rovoal's activity in Sagalash, which the UTSP denied.

This Story is Developing

TERNCA ACCEPTS AJERRIN SUMMIT OFFER

The Terncan Ministry of Foreign Relations has accepted the call by Ajerrin for an economic summit in New Hope, noting it will help create more economic cooperation in the region. Ternca hopes to discuss the One Belt One Road New Jade project at the summit as well as increasing ties in the region. The Terncan Minister of Economics and Economic Development are expected to attend, as well as executives from many firms in the Federation. The Terncans call for the invitation of WACO members as well and Vvarden to discuss their future interaction.

Princess Amelia to Remain In Almira and Accompany Prince Napoleone's Body Home

Following the sudden and horrific death of Prince Napoleone of Midrasia it has been announced that Princess Amelia is to remain in Almira until she can accompany the Prince's body home to Midrasia, where she is expected to remain in mourning until the funeral at which point she will return to Sagite. The Princess has so far declined requests for statements from the press and has remained in seclusion in the apartments where she and her husband had been staying prior to his death; according to palace sources Princess Amelia has spoken briefly with her father, the Grand Prince Andrew II, however has subsequently isolated herself and is refusing to leave her apartments. The assurances that she will be accompanying Napoleone's body home to Midrasia come from the brief telephone call. This isolation has led to serious concerns in Sagite's government and the Prime Minister, Julian Ulrics, has stated that he intends to dispatch a party, including the Princess' younger brother Prince James to ensure the wellbeing of the young Princess. It is hoped that Prince James will be allowed to accompany the Princess as her escort and provide emotional support in this time of grief.

The death of Prince Napoleone signals a tragic end to not only the most significant royal marriage in recent years, but also the unification of the thrones of Midrasia and Sagite. Though both nations are constitutional monarchies the union would have been historically significant and would mark the closeness of diplomatic relations between Midrasia and the Principality.
