Actually they say Sedna's rotation - if we've measured it accurately - is significantly slower than it should be. And its orbit is far more elliptical than much of the rest of the Belt.

Though yeah in comparison to literally any actual planet's, Sedna's "moon" would be little more than a dark clump of rock. In comparison to Sedna it'd probably be rather sizeable (but then again you just have to be roughly comparable to Pluto to claim that).

I was mostly asking for flavor and setting. The most I could imagine a body of that size being any good for would be a refueling point for short-range cutters and similar ships and a communication relay for ships and sites within the Collective's sphere of influence. A handful of folks with the cyberpunk equivalent of a vegetable patch, a HAM radio, and a diesel pump.

I was saying more along the lines of Pluto and Charon being in an almost binary system, but yeah. I'd wait for Grestin before you do anything.

Also: inter-system FTL messenger "torpedoes" with the loss of interplanetary communication. Plausible? Sensible?

Basically sending a pre-recorded video/transmission via a secure, tiny little unmanned vessel. Basically since Saturn went all quiet and more conventional Confederation channels of communication went down, the Collective might look into other means besides just broadcasting a message through the system. The inspiration from this came from Honor Harrington for those of you who are curious or who might think the concept sounds familiar.

  • Pros that I can see
    • Relatively secure
    • Fast delivery of message
    • To some extent it can bypass interference from something such as solar storms: the source of the transmission isn't a station on Sedna but rather a relatively powerful transmitter within the Confederation's (or other recipient's) sphere of influence in the solar system. Relatively close to the planet the recipient is on.
  • Cons that I can see
    • Moving parts
    • Could be physically intercepted, even if the message might be encrypted to the point of seeming like garbage to a third party
    • Immediate response or updates based on information wouldn't be possible. There's no real stopping a declaration of war sent this way and the contents of the message could be minutes, hours, or even days or more out of date depending on the distance traversed from sender to recipient.

If we have the tech for FTL transportation it would seem to me we likely have FTL comms that dont rely on physical courtier ships, though depending on the methods I guess freak solar storms could prove an issue. On a related note, exactly how fast is our FTL tech?

I think it's rather interesting that when we all try to conjure up futuristic states on other planets, they mostly tend to be authoritarian or even totalitarian. Reflection of sci fi or a lack of faith in democracy? Anyway hopefully I'll be getting a post up shortly.

So, if anyone is willing to pony up the Cash, Maldoon and his Lion Company are more then willing to go scout out a new planet for colonization/strip-mining.

I also legit considered using old stock UH-1s as cheap in atmosphere transport.

Ok, first off, Lion company are Mercenaries and Explorers, not bloody pirates. Secondly, I vary much value my flawed, yet awesome organic existence.

I was mainly working out a means to deliver symmetrical encryption keys to provide other nations quick (temporary) access to a communication network Sedna is setting up using optical transmission and asymmetrical encryption keys. Basically yeah you can intercept the little pod, but that will be useful to you for all the time it takes the Collective to ping the intended recipient through more 'conventional' communications to ask if they've received 'it'.

And if the storms stop long range jumps, cant some one technically make a set of short jumps to get to their destination?
