QAAM: CoH LXX Bid

Postby QAAM » Mon Jul 03, 2017 12:58 am

Bow before Margaret, all ye who come before her!

The most ancient nation never to have won a football tournament and eternal servant of Margaret, Spaam, has formed an alliance with the current Cup of Harmony champion and lover of rubber chickens, Qasden, to bid for the glorious privilege of hosting the most important tournament in the multiverse (for those that don’t qualify for the World Cup). But the 70th Cup of Harmony will be no ordinary football tournament. No! For this shall also be a TOURNAMENT OF THE GODS!

Yes, unlucky teams that failed to qualify for the World Cup shall first vie for the blessing of the gods of NS Sports in the group stage of this tournament. Then their champions shall battle each other TO THE DEATH in a knockout tournament in order to crown the ultimate glorious victor! Shall Mike, the god of foods you eat at sporting events, triumph over all? Or shall it be Sharon, the goddess of the sick day you fake so that you can go to the game? IT IS UP TO YOU!

So, come one, come all to QAAM: Cup of Harmony LXX!

Spaam

Many have read of the Spaam of old, an enormous and proud nation with a fanatical devotion to support and psychotic addiction to waffles (the pastry, not the national animal - they are totally different things). Alas, almost two hundred years ago, they descended into a terrible war which totally destroyed Spaam, and most thought they would never hear from them again. However, a tiny fraction of the population managed to escape and re-form Spaam as a kingdom in a neighbouring region, and they have grown to become a place that people actually want to visit again.

The Disunited Kingdom of Spaam is divided into three islands, and the majority of its people lives on the largest island, known as the mainland. Spaam has a population of over 13 million, and around a third of those live in the capital city of Paatukar, situated on an isthmus to the north. A bustling, multicultural metropolis, it is a mixture of new and old, fine dining and exotic street-food, humans, elves and others beside. The second largest city is Skaganes, situated on the south of the same island, bordered to the north by the large Lake Galaxy, with the two halves of the island separated by a large mountain range. To the south and west is the island of West Spaam, known for its elven populations, most living in its capital, and the third largest city, Nilmenas. To the east is the island of East Spaam, and its capital is Highbay, a smaller city known for its beautiful harbour and floating stadium. The one thing that unites all of Spaam, however, is its love of football, with every major urban centre sporting at least one team in National League or its Second Division.

Qasden

The Principality of Qasden is a sport-loving metropolis located in the southwestern portion of Atlantian Oceania. Under the authorities of Prince Franz-Pierre and PM Rees Häther, who govern from the capital, Turkish Van City (better known as T.V. City), the 'pality maintains relatively well relations with fellow regional nations. The economy is mostly entertainment and tourism-driven, while information and hospitality come close behind.

Citizens of Qasden enjoy frolicking amongst the streets of cities such as T.V. City, Port Harston, Taxson, Qad City, and so on. When it comes to sports, however, things start to get real. Nearly every Qasdonian plays or enthusiastically watches some form of sport, with athletic programs such as Association Football, Basketball, and Tennis leading the nation in popularity. The 'pality is home to many wonderful venues, such as the Royal T.V. Stadium, an all-around mecca for Qad sports, located in the heart of T.V. City. Citizens enjoy these friendly competitions in an almost eternal spring-like weather, with glorious rainy days and gloomy sunny days making up the usual forecasts. Certain places in Qasden, like the mountainous southwestern cities of Fyre and Destiny, experience more of an early spring and autumn pattern, with snow falling at least once every other month. Trains and planes are the best ways to travel between each of the venues, and stray cats on public vehicles are heavily common (so be aware of that, people with cat allergies).

Competition Format

While we are flexible with exact numbers, we are aiming to get 32 nations into the Cup of Harmony, though our prime objective is to make sure every nation that has roleplayed is included. The competition will be split into two halves, each to be hosted in Spaam and Qasden. Each half will be comprised of four groups of four (assuming 32 nations), competing in a single round-robin, with the top two nations progressing into a knockout tournament. The winners of the knockout tournament in each half will travel to Paatukar in Spaam for the Grand Final, while the runner-ups shall go to Qasden for the Third-Place Match.

The tie-breakers shall be, in order, Points, Goal Difference, Head-to-Head, Wins, Goals For, whoever can come closest to shooting an apple off Lord Gregory’s head.

Scorination and RP-bonus

We will be using xkoranate to scorinate the tournament, using the SQIS formula and additive styles. No home bonus shall be used, even if the hosts participate, and in that case, we shall be scorinating each other’s halves.

As the Cup of Harmony is essentially a battle of the best role-players that Margaret hates, we shall have a generous roleplay bonus worth up to 5 15 KPB points. The rosters and matchdays (starting with matchday 0) shall each be ranked out of 5, with the total bonus being the average over the competition. We will be looking for creativity over everything else, with roleplay that plays with the theme of the tournament rated more favourably.

Experience

Spaam has already (co-)hosted four Cups of Harmony (including one on his own) and two Baptisms of Fire, including the most recent one. Over the years Spaam has also (co-)hosted a number of minor tournaments, such as the latest Quidditch World Cup. Spaam has much experience with scorinators, inventing some early and recent ones, and has scorinated over 50 years worth of his domestic tournament. Spaam is also a very experienced participant in NS Sports, with over 30 World Cups under their belt, and was the inventor of ‘spaaming’ - abusing the roleplay bonus system so much that caps were introduced just for Spaam.

Prior to the beginning of summer 2016, the user behind Qasden had strolled around NS for a year and a half, blindly unknown of the world of forums. After finally discovering it, he created the 'pality to avoid prejudice in his main country's no-forum region. After working with scorinators a bit and researching some of NS Sports' past events, Qasden finally said "screw it" and began his scorinating career just a few weeks after discovering NS Sports. Since then Qasden has hosted the Qasden Open (precursor to the NSAO), the Maple Leaf Bowl, the World Lacrosse Championships (solo), the International Basketball Championships and the domestic leagues and tournaments of the Qailpyme Sporting Alliance.

In short, this bid is a chance for both a newer nation to get experience hosting one of the major NS Sports tournaments and a (very) old hand to give back to the community that has given them so much over the years.

Emphasis mine for some clarity, as I'm not entirely sure what the bolded part means.

Is that a potential 5 KPB boost per match, if you keep up a 5-point score each MD? 'total bonus being the average over the competition' is confusing me, or maybe the headline of 5 KPBs (which is frankly enormous if you compare 5 kpb jumps for each nation) is blinding me from the real truth.

Your RP 'challenges', as I noted with Food in the BoF, I know I would/will hate as, frankly, who are you to tell people what some of their content should be? All we really ask is 'make it something about football' (and sometimes not even that), while everything else is optional. Not giving full bonuses for not using the stated theme (presumably Gods) I very much dislike the idea of.

Also, on a more conceptual point, saying 'we want everyone who RPd and didn't make it' is at odds with 'a tournament for the best RPers that Margaret hates' so that makes me think you haven't really got a clear vision of what the CoH is exactly for (I don't mind either interpretation, just pick one).

Thanks for the questions! (Edited because apparently I can't explain good)

That is a maximum of a KPB boost you can get in any one matchday. Let's say you do an average roster (3), post a kickass pre-comp RP (5), and after the first matchday you don't have much time but manage to put together something that is otherwise awesome (4). Then your bonus for the second matchday will be 4 KPB (average of 3, 5 and 4).

You can get the full bonus if you don't use the theme, we are just kinder in our ratings if you do.

No challenges this time - your group will have a patron god, and if you use your god, we will be kinder in our ratings. But as I said before, if you are an awesome RPer, you deserve the full bonus.

"a tournament for the best RPers that Margaret hates" is me trying to be humorous - we want all RPers to join us (but obviously the ones that Margaret don't hate and therefore qualify for the World Cup won't be joining us!)

Why be more favourable to people who use the theme? I can understand providing a potential hook for if people are interested, but I don't like the idea of effectively making someone's work do less for them, pound for pound, if they don't have room in what they're writing for Gods. Particularly since it's such a... specialised topic, I guess, that won't fit a lot of nations (including my own, should I continue to trip up on rosterless newbies at home).

Simple answer is it is more of a challenge to write to a theme than to write whatever you want, so you should be rewarded. That's our philosophy. You won't be penalised for not using the theme.

Am I correct in my interpretation that a nation will only be able to attain a bonus worth 5 KPB points at any point during the tournament (i.e. If a nation RPs on MDs 1, 2 and 3 and posts a roster earning 5 points for all 4, then they will have a 5 point total bonus, not a 20 point total bonus for their 3rd group stage match) or is the bonus cumulative but the new bonus amount added is the average through that matchday?

So does someone who posts only a roster and nothing else going to have a +4 KPB compared to a nation that doesnt?

What do you mean by average? If someone posts a +4 KPB roster, and doesn't post anything else the entire tournament, does that +4 KPB maintain itself through the whole tournament as the average of their contributions?

Or is this now strictly a 'post more, get more' situation where your score is divided by the number of matchdays to determine the average?

Personally i don't see the purpose of averaging unless its for the initial situation of providing an initial boost to those who do post a roster v. those who don't. but you can just do that anyway, so i don't see the end game in doing it this way v. the normal way. It will result in a massive difference between those who RP and those who don't - which is great for WCQ - but as this is the CoH, will likely result in RP bonus being a 'non-factor' in the end. since everyone will be stuck 1-2 KPB apart in bonus from the start to end of the tournament. If anything, i feel it artificially constrains RP bonus overall while massively penalizing a user who's first RP comes in 10 seconds after MD1 cutoff instead of 10 seconds before (if average is determined per MD instead of just an average of the users total contributions)

That said, regardless of the answers, i'm still supportive of it

Just so I get the concept right - this means that a nation that starts the competition with a KPB of 19, who writes an amazing novel in seven pieces, will still have the lower hand in a final against a nation that opens the Cup with a KPB of 25, even if they never went beyond copy-pasting a roster?

Personally not my favorite idea with the spirit of the Cup of Harmony in mind. I do understand and applaud the intention to (generously) reward an RPer starting from day 1, but I would prefer a sloping/degrading RP over this system (by example, RP boost is always 0,75*(RP boost previously + new effort). This efficiently allows you to scale maximal RP addition towards the impact of KPB points. The example given would say that maximal RP bonus is 20. I vaguely remember for a tournament picking a multiplier which ensured that the maximal RP bonus equalled the KPB spread.

All this obviously has no impact on the reliability or skill of the organising duo - just a remark/moment of reminiscing upon the chosen system.

Thanks for the questions, Vilita & Buyan!

Vilita: I agree that penalising someone who misses out on a cutoff would be an unfortunate circumstance, so we would be happy to count it as if it had been posted on time if that happens. The roster bonus comes in whenever someone posts a roster - time is not a factor in that case.

If the RP bonus ends up being a non-factor in the end, then I would consider that an very successful competition. As the competition is only 7 games long, I don't feel that averaging will make a big difference compared to other systems, while it does make it much simpler on our end.

Buyan: we picked 5 KPB points, as it would essentially double the ranking of a team ranked 100th. We had also considered making it even larger, and if we hear consensus, then we would be more than happy to increase it. I think a degrading RP system works perfectly for the qualifiers + WC, which is around 25 matchdays, but for the CoH (where we don't carry over RP bonus) would not make much difference in practice.

I agree 5 points KPB for the whole competition is too low, for reasons others explained.

You've misunderstood me - I'm sure you agree that if everyone has roleplayed brilliantly, then it would count as a successful tournament. However, that is not the way it usually happens, so the bonus should, and would, play a major role.

We will be increasing the bonus first stated in the bid thread, as we want to make sure that RP bonus is the major factor it should be.
