UN considering making "Cultural Appropriation" illegal

Postby Proctopeo » Sun Jun 18, 2017 11:22 am

You read the title right, folks: the UN is considering making "cultural appropriation" of indigenous cultural things illegal.. And an article with opposite slant for balance.

What do you think, NSG? Is this reasonable? Is it too authoritarian? Or is it just absurd?

In my personal opinion, this is 1) authoritarian and tyrannical, 2) absurd, and 3) dangerous. I do, however, think at least their heart is in their right place and this doesn't appear to be out of malice, but out of stupidity (t. Hanlon's Razor); essentially, their intentions are well, but their actions aren't.
Hope I did it right yall

How the fuck is this even enforceable?
Cultures are not static unchanging things.

This is completely stupid.

The UN is pretty much a joke at this point. Focus on climate change, UN, nobody gives a fuck about cultural appropriation. I'll drunkenly wear my Kimono whenever I damn please.

If this is taken to its logical conclusion, something like this would make sense under their "law".

If they have to actually try and enforce such a thing, they'll probably run out of paper to write their strongly worded letters on in less than an afternoon.

Exactly. Every culture, excepting perhaps some uncontacted tribes, is to one degree or another an amalgamation of its neighboring cultures, to say nothing of the importation of culture by immigrants. In short, this is a terrible idea that fails to understand how cultures are in constant flux.

You underestimate the power of power-hungry bureaucrats with a bit of a silly and ineffectual tyrant complex.

They'll just order more paper, responsibly made from the chopped-up remains of the last rainforests the razing of which they'd strongly condemned in letters penned in triplicate just a half dozen resolutions prior.

The UN is full of a bunch of SJW's with little to mediocre political experience, and in general is a complete laughing stock. It needs an overhaul, or needs to be replaced with something better.

I just remember how much they botched the situation in Rwanda.

The UN should not exist.

The UN is making its existence more and more questionable to me. Either it's reformed or it should get replaced with another organisation. But at this point it has been focusing on very unimportant issues.

A.) They're just forming a committee to discuss it
B.) The UN doesn't have the power to make anything illegal
C.) The odds of it ever getting to the point of a resolution are pretty slim, given that it's taken 16 years to get to this point

The OP is bad and you should feel bad.

Unenforceable, stupid, and rather weird.

Good work, UN. Makes me take you really seriously.
The People's Republic of Kaitjan is a nation most glorious: a totalitarian communist dictatorship set against a backdrop of vast jungles, great rivers and a horribly tropical climate. Kaitjan is renowned for its all-encompassing militarism, rampant xenophobia, isolationist tendencies and a great love for tigers and tiger motifs.

I care. Lots of people who were saved by peacekeepers are, lots of people care.

No, League Of Nations sucked. Did it stop WW2? No? Then it sucked.

They've done some good work, but overall, the work they do has little effect on...anything?

Let me explain - I would argue that their focus on climate change is a good thing. I am very, very, very passionate about the environment. But on the same token, all their protocols, all their accords, they never actually enforce them, because they can't. It's up to the national governments worldwide.

Same goes with resolutions regarding human rights, gay rights, you name it. They mean very very well, but in the end, it's all symbolic. Either the UN should do more, which could violate the concept of national sovereignty, or they could just dissolve because at the end of the day, they hardly do shit.
