An Alpen Man in Wishtonia (CLOSED/Canonical Region Thread)

Postby Hutanjia » Sat Jun 10, 2017 8:58 pm

These posts were originally posted in the Rugby League World Cup 17 in the NS Sports Forum in order to garner bonus RP points. They are collected here for canonical purposes. I wrote them with the full intention that I would use them to set up a bit of a preface to a future ‘Day In The Life’ type thread for the WIshtonian Polynesian region (More original name yet TBD), as well as acting as a continuation of the Hutanjian War thread. Call it a bridge RP thread, if you will. Keep in mind that they are from the perspective of a mercenary Neu Engollian Captain recruited into the Hutanjian Republican Army as a company CO, and would only contain facts available to him through open sources, anecdotes from fellow veterans, or non-classified military documents that he might have access to view. Thanks for your interest and TG me with any questions or interest in the future Wishtonian RP. PLEASE DO NOT POST IN THIS THREAD. Thanks.

An Alpen Man in Wishtonia

So, this is my first attempt at something like this. A blog, I guess they call it. This is different for me. I’m sometimes at a loss when it comes to civilian uses of technology. I never saw much use for it until I joined the military. I know that’s kind of far from the rest of my generation, but, that’s just how I am. I’m still amazed at how cell phones work.

You’re probably wondering who I am. My name is Sylvain Renkart. I grew up in a suburb of Schwartzgarten, a bit city in Neu Engollon. Now, as you can probably tell from the title, I no longer reside in the Confederacy. I did well enough in school, then did my mandatory service in the NEDF, specifically, in the Militia. I made it into one of the Alpen Regiments, although that’s not that hard. Half the regiments in the Militia are Alpen, but I guess they’re still considered more elite than regular infantry because you add in those mountaineering skills. The 34th Alpen was my unit, and, as with a lot of other former Neu Engollian soldiers, I didn’t want to give up the lifestyle, so I did another term of service. Then, as many of my countrymen have also done, I decided that I wanted to be paid quite a bit more for my dedication to the military life and also have a chance to see real action. That’s not really very likely in a small neutral democracy. That’s when I walked into the Uli Schwyz recruiting office one fine autumn day.

I ended up in Hutanjia for the War and to help fulfill the USG contract for the Hutanjian government, and there I stayed to find employ with the Hutanjian Republican Army as a company commander. I will get into all that, but I thought I’d start off with a simple, fun topic: Cursing in Wishtonian.

Wishtonians are generally considered to be people from The Cardwith Islands, Hutanjia and Kenega. There are a few other nations that border the Wishton Sea, such as Dachine, and even share some culture and heritage, but usually when people talk about Wishtonians, they’re talking about citizens from these three countries.

Hutanjians are Polynesian in appearance or racial character. Slightly Asiatic features with lighter brown skin. Cardwithians are for the most part Melanesian, that is of a more darker cast than your typical Polynesian and with tighter, curly hair as opposed to straight. There is some blending and you can see some people in both countries that seem of mixed heritage. Kenega has people of both Melanesian and Polynesian heritage, but the majority of them are also of mixed blood with European/Westerner ancestry, courtesy of the Gaulic and Erlenic colonists that settled the island. Kenega has the highest percentage of mixed Westerner heritage in the Wishton Sea. Kenega, it should also be mentioned, is a commonwealth and still owes allegiance to Nyasott, successor to the Erlenic Union. We’ll get into the details of Kenega in a later blog post.

There are three main islands in the Cardwiths, simply named North, East and West Cardwith. There are two main islands in Hutanjia, Nesselberg, which is the Western island, and Nevorn, which is the Eastern island. Kenega is just one little island. One might point out that Nesselberg, Cardwith and Nevorn, not to mention some city names, are odd, Anglo-sounding names for a Polynesian culture, and you’d be right. They were named by the Erlenic colonists who arrived in the early 19th century and none of the Wishtonian nations have bothered to change the names back to the earlier native names, although you still see them used on some documents.

Those that go on to secondary and higher education, which still isn’t a lot in any of these countries, pride themselves on speaking the King’s English. The lower classes speak patois, a mix of native, Gaulic French and Erlenic English words. That’s why they have some of their own cuss words.
I don’t really know their origins, but here are some of the top ones you’ll hear, and when you are there longer than your typical tourist, you’ll hear them A LOT!
So yeah, here goes:

Fideh - This word means ‘fuck’ basically. Depending on usage, it’s a verb, a noun, an adjective, just like our F bomb in English/Common. I hear it pretty casually used to the point that I forget to upbraid my soldiers on using it in public. It’s way too common for a cuss word that it’s probably lost much of its bite.

Pono - Phallus. Yep, the male member. Also pretty casually used. Recently it was allowed to be used on primetime network and cable television in Hutanjia. Interesting side note, the tribal warrior dance that is performed prior to rugby matches and during other important ceremonies is called the Panehu. That’s no accident as to how similar are the two words. The early incarnations of the Panehu were about showing off your manhood in order to prove you were the superior warrior. I have never seen a version of this and being a heterosexual guy, I’m not that eager to, but some groups still perform it for cultural heritage purposes.

Sapa - Feces. Scat. Shit. Honestly, I don’t hear this much. More often they opt for the English slang words for shit, but if you go deep into the jungles in the hinterlands of southern Nevorn and on Nesselberg, and in the southern fishing villages of the Cardwiths, you’ll still hear it.

Kupos - The female parts. The C word. See You Next Tuesday. A bit more taboo in many circles. Worse than any of the above.

There’s a few others, but nothing really worth noting that’s in heavy usage. A lot of it has to do with context and phrasing, which boggles me and I couldn’t possibly explain here in one little blog posting. The Wishtonians, and especially Hutanjians, can get very elaborate with their colorful phrases when ripping someone down.

Please don’t send me angry emails, not that there’s probably many of you reading this. I know they’re cuss words. I just thought it would be a light, funny, simple way to begin my unique intro to the Wishtonian area and culture. Funny as I can be, anyway. I have more blog entries coming and I look forward to your constructive comments. Thanks.

Syl Renkart.

Battle Lines and Vesselle

Postby Hutanjia » Sat Jun 10, 2017 8:59 pm

An Alpen Man in Wishtonia
I Meet My Command

Yeah, I’m back. This time, with a little less lighter fare. Some of you might geek out, some of you might get bored with the politics and history. Sorry, but it’s an essential part of my story and the story of this area, my new adopted homeland, and it needs to be told in some capacity. There’s a darker side to Wishtonian culture. There’s a reason that there’s new Wishtonian cuisine joints popping up around Burgunden, Neu Engollon; Ekaterine, Falkasia and Fineberg, New Edom. Some of it is due to cultural appropriation for sure, but some of it because of the mass wave of refugees that headed to these far foreign metropolises for various reasons that we’ll get into.

So, I mentioned that after my regular conscription service in the NEDM (Neu Engollon Defense Militia), I signed on with a PMC, the Uli Schwyz. Yeah, I went merc. It seemed like a good choice at the time as there just wasn’t a lot of job opportunity for my skill set back home.

My first contract was a smaller one, in the Koravistani desert, but the next, and final one, was the huge one. The one that the Uli Schwyz is known for around the world. The Hutanjian contract or War - It’s called a bunch of other things, depending on what side of the channel you’re on - The Cardwithian War for Independence, the Wishtonian War, War In the Wishtonian archipelago, etc. I’m going to just call it the Hutanjian War, like most of my friends. Or simply...The War. It was a very large war on not so very large islands. Eventually, the whole Uli Schwyz (also called USG or USGSC these days), 3 regiments at the time, ended up being deployed to the Hutanjian islands. Later, I will get into more details about the actual War, those worth sharing to non veterans, anyway. The rest of what is in my head about the brutal Hutanjian War is not for regular civilian consumption, no matter that some might have a morbid fascination to hear it.

When the war ended, the Hutanjians were very short on manpower, especially the officer class. Many of us were offered an even higher rate of pay from the Hutanjian Republican Army if we stayed on after our Uli Schwyz contracts expired. The USGSC wasn’t super happy about that as they lost a bunch of veteran officer ranks, but ultimately they came around as they were offered a commission from the HRA to recruit us. Besides, the USGSC could more easily replace special ops trained officers from their recruiting offices around the world, than the Hutanjians could from an educated and highly trained local pool of men that barely existed now. That's a very roundabout, lengthy way of saying most of their officer candidates had been killed off in the war.

I won’t even get into the women in combat debate, but know that the Hutanjians are still pretty patriarchal and haven’t broken that gender barrier yet of women in combat roles. Hutanjian women in the HRA are about 99.99% likely to be in a supportive role where they will never pick up a weapon. The Cardwithians are a lot better in this respect, but not quite there in comparison to some socially liberated Western nations.

So there I was, a brown haired, fairly pale skinned, blue eyed young man - having been newly commissioned in the Hutanjian Republican Army. It’s as exotic as it sounds.
Taking charge of a company of patois speaking Polynesians, even though I’d already spent considerable time there and gotten to know the local population, was like being given a company of little green aliens in my somewhat prejudiced mind.
The USG and NEDM structure and culture are a lot closer to each other than either are to the HRA structure and culture. Still, the pay was right and we were driven to learn.

I should also say that not all the USG officers that joined the HRA post-war were Neu Engollian, just like only a third of the USGSC rank and file are Neu Engollian. Many of my former comrades that took the leap into the HRA with me were Shalumite, Catalan, Quebecois, New Edomite, New Hayesalian and many other nationalities from around the multiverse.
Also, not only USG officers were solicited with HRA commissions, but also other allied officers, like directly from the New Edomite Army, as well as other allied services. Not as many took the offer, but at least a handful did, from what I know. I'm not privy to all the numbers, so I'm just guessing here, going off word of mouth.

So, back to my company. Even though I knew little about proper logistics, and nothing about petrol, I was assigned to B Company, 2nd Battalion of the 44th Logistics Regiment. B Company are fuelers. We drive Petro Genesis Fuel trucks, plus a few other vehicles that hold the hoses and other stuff, along with people movers, and we make sure everyone else is gassed up. Tanks, armored IFVS and APCs, MUVs and FAVs, generators...Anything with a gas tank. Of course we’re vulnerable and highly combustible in our fuel bomb trucks waiting to happen, so the fueler companies are well defended when they need to set up depots near front lines. If possible, we stay well behind the lines.

Now you might say that in a war in the jungle where there’s guerrilla forces and lots of our people going behind their lines, that’s a tall order. Where exactly are the front lines, Syl? And you’d be right about that. So there almost always is a company from the 35th infantry assigned to us. We also have any extra personnel of our own on security detail when we’re away from our base in Vesselle. Vesselle is a strange place as it’s really close to where all the trouble is, on Nesselberg and not where the rest of the big Hutanjian cities are on Nevorn, the much safer island. I’ll get into that in a bit, maybe the next blog post, but for now, let me finish this up…

So there I was, a gear bag with me, I arrived at the airfield and took the trip south through the city to the southern outskirts where my new base would be in a GAZ jeep driven by a young corporal. He didn’t say much and the engine made a hell of a racket to try and talk over anyway, so the trip was pretty silent. When we got there, I showed my newly issued papers and card from Chastille/CENTCOM, and got waved through the gate.

I saw a few guys out working on trucks and moving equipment and even some just standing around. No one gave me salutes, even though I tried to salute them a few times. They usually looked away quickly like they hadn’t seen me. It was a strange feeling. I knew I was the foreign guy coming in to take over, and they probably were a little resentful of that, not having one of their own promoted up, so I didn’t begrudge them too much.

Also, it was kind of weird that even though they were pushing hard to get combat experienced officers to take over slots of combat units, I somehow got assigned to a backline unit that could have easily been assigned to a new Hutanjian commissioned officer with little combat experience. It may not seem like it, but I was keenly aware that it wasn’t necessary for me to be with this unit and a bit of overkill.

Finally, we arrived outside of the main building and I was escorted to where my office would be. The greeting Lieutenant was named Tozambo. He was to be my XO. The fact that Tozambo didn’t open the door for me and that should have been a big clue right there. He knew what was waiting on the other side. When I opened it, I was assaulted by dozens of jerry cans, some plastic, some aluminum, stacked high to the ceiling and spilling out at me. I had some bruises for quite a few days from some of the metal ones. They’d packed my office full of them.

I cursed up a storm, then actually laughed a little bit, watching Tozambo smirk. He’d gotten out of the way quick, knowing what was coming. I knew it would be okay from then on, with B Company. They’d hazed me to welcome me into the fold. I was home.

More on Vesselle

Hutanjia Map

The big city on Nesselberg island, and probably the only bit of civilization on the island that can properly be called a city, was a port founded and named by the early Gaulic colonists sometime in the 18th century. It was a good way point between Chastille and the Cardwithian ports, and it built up over time as a thriving town. Nesselberg is almost all thick jungle, so if you can imagine what it took to carve out the land for the port and surrounding town. Still, to this day, they have to actively work on keeping the jungle at bay as it threatens to creep up and retake Vesselle and its suburbs and surrounding bases.

Vesselle, and by extension Nesselberg island, is a weird situation. Nesselbergians are Hutanjians, but if you talk to some of them, they aren’t. They’re their own ethnicity and some are even fighting to be their own nationality as well.

Nesselberg was the main battleground for most of the Hutanjian War, with the UFF rebels in the south, that would later form the core of the Cardwithian armed forces, and the Hutanjians holding the northern part of the island. That has varied a bit, but for the most part, it’s remained pretty static. The Cardwithian backed rebels are a lot less active these days in southern Nesselberg, partly to do with the Treaty, and partly because they lost a lot of ground during the War, and also, lastly but not least, they have to deal with the Nesselbergian separatists who hate them as much as they hate the Hutanjian government. During the War, it was pretty much a straight one side or the other situation, but now, with the rise of the NFM at the end of the ‘official’ War, it’s a 3 sided ongoing low level war.

What’s that? You thought the war was over? Yeah, it’s never over, bub. They signed a treaty and Hutanjia ceded the Cardwiths their independence, giving them over all three main islands, even though they’d only fought over two. In a controversial decision, President Hespatu gave over North Cardwith even though there hadn’t been any large scale, conventional fighting over it since the early part of the war. His reasoning for the decision was that it would be the seed for more fighting and both sides were tired of fighting. What he refused to do was sign over Nesselberg to the Cardwithians like they wanted. If he’d done that, he would have had full on riots on his hands. Some in the south of the island may have questionable loyalties, but those in Vesselle are unquestionably Hutanjian. They pride themselves on being more patriotic than those in Chastille, the Hutanjian capital.

Anyway, I got sidetracked again. So, even though there’s the Treaty of Kenega, a low level guerrilla insurgency continues to be fought right here on Nesselberg. The main guerrilla group is supported by the Cardwithians and Falkasians, while a smaller group is the independent faction that doesn’t want to be part of Hutanjia or the Cardwiths. The third and biggest faction is the Hutanjian government and their...I mean our...forces.

Vesselle is a pretty big city on Nesselberg, that middle contested island that I mentioned before. There’s the civilian areas of the city, and the port, and then there’s a major air base there, in the West, then there’s a few scattered military bases to the south, among suburbs, then the last belt before the jungle is fortifications and mine fields and more hard core outposts. Our base is up in the Southwest, but frequently have to deploy further south.

One other weird fact is that the Hutanjian government, also to allay concerns about losing more young lives to a war that should be over, allows allies to bring in troops, usually small groups of special operations units to do ‘live training’ in the Nesselbergian interior. Live Training means that they actually go out and hunt down and wipe out the UFF guerrillas for combat experience, and keep them from gaining a foothold anywhere in the central and southern wilds of the island.

I don’t know the exact arrangement and it’s not public or even disseminated throughout the HRA (In which case I couldn’t tell you, anyway) but from what I’ve heard, these governments actually pay the Hutanjian government to take the ‘Live Training’ course, which helps fund the campaign to keep fighting the Cards. Sometimes, I’ve heard, instead of paying currency, the governments pay in military supplies and weaponry.

The only two parties that don’t have this arrangement are the New Edomite Army, and the USGSC, which still maintains a small level contract with the Hutanjian government. When there aren’t other foreign units actively training in the area, New Edomite Lancer, Rover and Marine units or USG commando units step in and keep up the pressure on the guerrillas.

It’s not just for political points and it’s not worthless scrub jungle down there. Both the government, New Edom and other allies have mines and other resource and research facilities all over the island that need to be protected, hence the fact that there’s a network of outposts and forward bases all over the central and southern part of the island.

So, last little bit about Vesselle is this...It’s such a weird city to be stationed near because of all that is going on over the island, but the local Vessellians seem to be immune to all that. They don’t talk about the war at all and by all appearances, Vesselle is a very cosmopolitan, modern city. They rival Chastille for Hutanjian fashion and they have a big entertainment, food and beverage and even a burgeoning electronics industry and green agriculture movement. When you walk down the main streets of the city in uniform, you’re likely going to be ignored. Even if you’re a white foreigner in a HRA uniform like me. That’s kind of more than a little weird. If I am in my civvies in a Vesselle shop, I’m guaranteed to not be served last. They like foreigners, they just don’t like soldiers very much, even though they know we’re defending their way of life in an immediate manner.

They don’t want to be reminded of the war, and I can’t say I really blame them. I have memories of the full on war that I’d rather erase. Maybe another story for another time, but maybe not for civilian consumption. Until next time, I’m...

Kenega: The Neutral Ground

Postby Hutanjia » Sat Jun 10, 2017 9:06 pm

An Alpen Man in Wishtonia
Kenega, Part One: Tropical Paradise

Image

Kenega is a smaller island quite a few hundred kilometers north of Hutanjia and the Cardwiths, but still very much a part of Wishtonia. Like the other islands, it was part of the Greater Hutanjia colony of Gaul, and then transferred hands to the Erlenic Empire during the early part of the 19th Century. While Hutanjia broke free in the 1940’s (and, of course, later on, the Cardwiths from Hutanjia), Kenega remained a part of the Empire, and later the Erlenic Union, then subsequently, Nyasott, which broke free from the dissolving Erlenic Union in the last decade.

They seem to be quite happy to remain and enjoy the benefits of being a Nyasotter commonwealth. Kenega is a major tourist destination, even through the roughest parts of the war when there were several travel advisories out around the Multiverse about travelling to Wishtonia, tourists still flocked to the small island. There is a substantial joint forces and allied base of Nyasotter troops and domestic security forces on the Western point of the island at Faronham.

Kenega only maintains their Gendarmerie and Coast Guard, as far as anything close to a paramilitary force is concerned. Both have major contingents at Faronham Joint Forces Base, sharing space with Nyasotter military units. They do not have an Army, Navy or Air Force, and instead they rely on Nyasott for protection in the ultimate case of invasion. Honestly, I think that Faronham Base would hold out maybe just long enough for a bigger Nyasotter force to arrive in the Wishton Sea, but that’s debatable, even to if such a force would be sent by the parent nation.

Especially, if they were assaulted by Hutanjia, which is the biggest military force in the region. That was actually a strong possibility for a bit. Tensions were rather high as rumors abounded that Kenega might have had a part in the instigation of the Cardwithian Independence movement as well as some sort of connection with Milton ‘The Mongoose’ Atave, the dreaded, traitorous, coup plotting head of the old KHS (Kingdom of Hutanjia Security). Oh, so many ideas for future blog posts!

Nothing could ever be substantiated and things were smoothed over by Nyasott, as well as cooler heads in Kenega and Hutanjia. No doubt the Cards were rooting for a war so they could bring Kenega into their sphere of influence as an ally or even satrap, but alas, it didn’t happen.

I mentioned before that Kenegans are mostly a curious mix of Polynesian, Melanesian and Erlenic/Westerner blood. They are the depiction of the true polyglot that is predicted that all of humanity will become eventually, with intermixing and breeding. Maybe they’re the most horrid nightmare of Aryan, white purist fanatics. But for some of us, it's just a fact and a curiosity. I smile, as I think of friendly, easy going, slightly mischievous Kenegans.

Curiously, Kenegans, unlike their Cardwithian and Hutanjian cousins, tend to adapt the very Anglo-Nyasotter names of their colonial masters. Seeing a Kenegan name on paper, you’d be hard pressed to discern it from your typical Anglo ethnic person from any other such similar ethnic nation. In contrast, a lot of Hutanjian and Cardwithian names seem to have adopted Anglo and other influences in first naming, but using ancestral, native names for the surname. Easy way to tell a Kenegan from another Wishtonian.

Did you know that Charles Nellis, the Socialist founder and President (For Life) of the Cardwith Islands was originally a Kenegan? Well, if you think about his name and what I just told you, you’d have probably suspected that.
He was a Kenegan immigrant that moved to the Cardwiths during the 1960’s when Kenega was hitting a downturn and Hutanjia was hitting a rare economic peak. More on him later.

I have to say that most Kenegans I’ve met are pretty laid back, friendly and more than happy to take your money. Yeah, I think they receive that reputation of being greedy whole-heartedly and without dispute.
Fine with me. When you realize that someone’s motivation is a moderate amount of cash flow, it can be easy to get along with them and get what you want with the proper resources.

Ask the common USG, Hutanjian or New Edomite soldier about all this during the War, and they could give a shit. What Kenega meant was cheap booze, sun, sand, women (or men) and a solid break from the horrors of the war.

An Alpen Man in Wishtonia
R&R in Kenega, Part Two: Party in Kenega City

I had the opportunity to go to Kenega once for R&R during the War. It was as glorious, memorable and forgettable as it sounds. Forgettable because most of us were so fucked up and drunk all time that it’s really hard to piece together exactly what happened and when, other than knowing that we were having a damn good time. I don’t think I’ve ever drank as much as I did that trip again, even though I’ve bonded pretty good with my junior officers and NCOs here at B Company over some rum and beer, I never let it get too out of hand.

Rum is big here in the Wishtonian archipelago. A big export and a big local drink. Free flowing and plentiful.

Kenega is two parts. The southern part, which contains Kenega City, the capital and main draw, is all resorts, beaches, touristy traps, high end villas and little get aways sprawled along the full southern coast. That’s where a lot of the tourists are drawn to, but there’s another side to Kenega...the northern preserves and wilds. The northern parts are as big a draw to people that want to explore the natural side and take safaris. The North is teaming with wildlife and the northern residents in the scattered towns maintain an easy balance and respect with the other non-human residents in the forests and swamps.

The biggest town in the north is Ourapeka. Many tour groups that want to have the full natural experience head out from here by boat, bike, jeep or other conveyance into the wilds. It’s kind of like what I picture an old Western frontier town to be in old American lore.

Full disclosure, I’ve been to Kenega a couple times since the official end of the War, and I’ve found that I am now more drawn to Ourapeka and parts beyond than I am to the Southern hedonist resorts and plastic glitziness of Kenega City. Maybe I’m just getting older. I've definitely put that party lifestyle in the past. Let's just agree that both parts of the island appeal to a broad group, increasing its draw as a major regional and foreign tourist destination.

As much as I talk about how safe and remote Kenega is from the realities of the brutal war in Hutanjia and the Cardwiths, Kenega City has its own dangers. People die there on a regular basis, and not just from overindulging. Criminal syndicates are very active and virtually unchecked there. They prey upon tourists, just as small time con men do.

Also, Kenega City has acted as a No Man’s Land for the secret forces of the Hutanjian War and its aftermath. The domestic Kenegan Intelligence Service, USG Intexa (the logistical and intel branch of the PMC), the Falkasian FSIS, the Hutanjian Security Agency, The Cardwithian Intelligence Directorate, various intel agencies of New Edom, as well as many other allies and enemies maintain a presence in the city and surroundings, trading info and hunting down each others’ agents in a long standing cat and mouse game.

There are slums in Kenega City that are very dangerous for foreigners to even get near, not to mention neigborhoods close to downtown. Marousha, just to the Southwest, is renowned for repelling strangers out of their town and making them disappear in certain instances.

When one is drunk, this is especially a danger as you can wander too far from the beaten path and find yourself in a very dangerous situation.

Through talking to comrades and fellow foreign travellers in the region, I’ve heard many stories about near death experiences and brutal muggings. There have also been some almost comical stories. The Cardwithians even sometimes went to Kenega for a break from the War, although how they could afford it I can’t even imagine. One story has it that a party of Hutanjian and Cardwithian soldiers didn’t bother to shed their uniforms before heading out on a night in Kenega City. They encountered each other and rather than buzzkill their good times, decided not to brawl, but rather bonded over drinks and stories in bars along the local strip. These were men who would likely be killing each other just a few weeks later, but they had that moment to enjoy and forget the ugliness of the War.

I’ve heard similar stories about USG, Falkasian and New Edomite troops.
That is both the magic and danger of Kenega City. Anything goes, anything is possible.
What’s that American city that has that saying, “What happens in *some debaucherous town*, Stays in *some debaucherous town*?’ Yeah, apply that to Kenega City.

If you want a peaceful, enlightening, nature loving vacation - I say stick to the North of Kenega, although there is alway the danger of being attacked by the local wildlife. (and still getting your hotel room or villa ransacked by thieves...)

Alternatively, if you’re looking for adventure and booze laden nights of debauchery, head to the south and Kenega City. There are safer resorts to stay in the South, but why?

Milton 'The Mongoose' Atave

Postby Hutanjia » Sat Jun 10, 2017 9:12 pm

An Alpen Man in Wishtonia
The Mongoose Part One: Myth, Legend, Monster

Previously I mentioned the Mongoose. Milton ‘The Mongoose’ Atave. (Ah-tah-Vāy)

So, I don’t even know how to start, as it has to do with a deep seated part of modern Hutanjian history, a lot of conspiracy, and some really ugly parts of the War that may be better to not bring up. I tell you what. I’m going to tread as lightly as I can about the most graphic parts of the story, but to a degree you have to know how...evil...this guy was. I can’t come up with a better word. He was just (some say still is) evil.

I’m going to just say that I’m not going to feed you a bunch of research out of books on Atave. I don’t sit around wasting my time soaking up shit like that, just like I don’t have a whole library on books about Hitler. I have better things to do with my time and better reads I could sink into.
So don’t count on this for factual information. It’s more anecdotal than anything. This is what I have heard and what I know from my time here and as an adopted Hutanjian.

Hutanjians love to trade around theories and conspiracies, post-war, about the Mongoose. It’s a legend that keeps building. Let’s establish some facts then back track from there. Officially, it was reported by the Kenegan authorities that the Mongoose...er, Milton Atave, died in their captivity on May 7th, 2014. For those of you who don’t know, that was during the Kenega City Armistice negotiations mid-war, when there was a lull and it was thought that there would finally be an end to this brutal war. The Cardwithians broke the armistice with a full out assault to retake all of West Cardwith, but that’s for another blog post.

Atave was allegedly roaming right outside the Presarius Plaza Hotel in Kenega City, where the negotiations were happening in...get this, a dress. He was disguised as an old lady wearing a dress and a sun hat. What gave him away was some of his KHS goons were around to aid in security. Also, and again this isn’t well substantiated, there was a FSIS (Falkasian Secret Intelligence Service) hit team in the park across the street that spotted him and tried to take him out.

Considering the bigwigs inside the conference: President Charles Nellis of the Cardwiths, President Hespatu of Hutanjia; Kent, the New Edomite Foreign Minister, Falkasian military dignitaries and Kenegan government arbitrators - you could imagine the security inside and surrounding the hotel. They pounced on both Atave, the KHS goons, and whatever supposed hit team were around.
Atave was whisked away by KIS, the Kenegan Intelligence Service, to their headquarters, but it was rumored that he had been shot during the melee. A wound that was supposedly, eventually fatal.

This is where it gets weird. The KIS, led by Director Hollander, would not allow pictures, interviews, any press, or even any foreign intelligence representatives near the headquarters, let alone near Atave. Even upon reports of his death from the wound, they didn’t release any pictures or information other than a time of death. Not that he deserved a funeral or any type of service, but there wasn’t even that.

I’ve heard some accounts from former KIS agents that they did see the body, and some even that they saw his ashes, post-cremation. Others that say he was whisked away to the lower levels of the KIS HQ alive and never re-appeared. It’s very odd for what we discussed as a relatively peaceful small, touristy island with no military or very hands on government. Right?

It’s all really suspicious and no one has been able, or maybe willing, to get to the bottom of his disappearance. What’s freaky is this guy still has followers that believe he’s still alive and will lead them to conquer Hutanjia and all of Wishtonia. There’s a whole fanatical branch of Hapalakites that are waiting for that day. What’s Hapalaku? A native, pagan religion that was outlawed because of Atave, that we’ll have to get into later.

Next, I get into why the Mongoose was not a cute, furry creature, but in fact a brutal nightmarish monster. Time to sign out for tonight, though.
Thanks for sticking with me.

An Alpen Man in Wishtonia
The Mongoose Part Two: Chaos, Coups and Cannibalism

Milton ‘The Mongoose’ Atave.

He wasn’t very tall or that intimidating looking if you see pictures of him. He was bald, wore round wire rimmed glasses and had kind of brown wrinkly skin. I’ve heard him called the Bad or Evil Gandhi. Those that were in his presence, though, were terrified of him. He had a persona and charisma that must have over ridden people’s initial judgements about his appearance, because he commanded a fanatical, fierce inner circle in the KHS. He got his nickname because he was good at going after the snakes that threatened the security of the Kingdom.

A lot of the hatred directed towards the Kingdom of Hutanjia, both from Cardwithians and Hutanjians, had to do with the way they were under constant oppression from the KHS. They were the classic, cliched secret police that didn’t hesitate to intimidate, torture and kill to secure power for both themselves and the King.

Milton Atave rose to the position of Director of the KHS during the 1990s. He was renowned for running successful operations against subversive communists and early Cardwithian separatist groups. Under his leadership, the KHS became pervasive throughout Hutanjian society.

When the full war broke out, and the USG and New Edom, the major ally of Hutanjia, began to send intelligence resources and assets to Hutanjia, they were shocked to find that Atave was reluctant to work with them and very ineffective in the fight against the UFF He had little intelligence on the Cardwithians, but was very concerned with threats to his power at home on Nevorn.

During this time, the cult of the Inner Circle was at its strongest. The Inner Circle were those in the KHS that were the most trusted by Atave. All were Hapalakites, adherents to the ancient Hujana tribal religion, while most of the hierarchy of the government and military of the Kingdom were Catholic. It is substantiated that they tortured and butchered enemies, including UFF rebels and foreign agents, in ceremonies and then ate parts of them, with Atave right there at the front gobbling on the heart and other organs. True, Hapalaku doesn’t advocate the killing and eating of people, but this wasn’t the true Hapalaku religion, this was Atave’s perverted take on it.

I’ve met some Hapalakites, and they’re very adamantly against Atave and his Inner Circle and all they did to bring disgrace to the religion. Since the Republic of Hutanjia has outlawed Hapalaku, they must be discreet in their worship. The more I’ve found out about the true practice of the religion, the more I’ve come to respect it. It’s sad that it has been so twisted and covered over by all the evil actions of the KHS goons.

So the KHS had everyone running scared. The King was starting to take steps to reign in Atave, alarmed at the reports of his advisers and military officers.
At the high point of the War, The Mongoose attempted to pull off his coup. While most of the Hutanjian troops were invading West and North Cardwith, with just a skeletal defense force at home, he struck. KHS shock troops took over the Palace, the media studios, police station and other central infrastructure around Chastille and Molnitha. He trapped the King and Queen in a panic room in the Palace and gassed them. Luckily, he didn’t get to the children.

Under the leadership of General Roderique Hespatu, a counter attack spearheaded by the Hutanjian Rangers was able to destroy a lot of the KHS forces and retake the capital. They had help from USG commando units and the Council Police of New Edom, who were there in force in the capital.

With the King and Queen dead, as well as the Regency Minister, and not wanting to put a young, ineffective cousin on the throne during this dire, crucial time, Hespatu made the shocking, extraordinary step of abolishing the monarchy and declaring a Republic. Many still feel that it was Hespatu's goal all along to push forward his own coup and effect an anti-monarchy takeover of Hutanjia. They say that Atave gave him the perfect opening to abolish the monarchy without having to do away with the royals himself and become reviled for regicide.

We’ll never know because of the fervor of relief with the defeat of the KHS, the popular Hespatu was widely accepted as the new leader of the new Republic to carry on the good fight against the Marxist Cards and rescue Hutanjia from collapse.

Atave fled to Nesselberg with the remnants of the KHS. Eventually the main leadership of the KHS were hunted down by units of the New Edomite Lancers and Hutanjian Rangers in a mining camp in southeastern Nesselberg. A major UFF force was also in the vicinity, so a full 3-way war broke out surrounding the camp. Somehow, Atave was not in the camp and still managed to escape. He was in the wind and no one was able to track him down until the Kenega City Armistice.

What was he doing outside the Armistice conference in a dress? Is he still alive today? Why did the KIS hush everything up about his bizarre re-appearance and his apprehension? Could Atave followers become a major nuisance in future Hutanjian affairs?

These are all questions that many of us hope will be answered one day, if only to satisfy morbid curiosity. Not sure what my next blog topic will be, but it will be hard to top the Mongoose. Till next time kiddos!

An Alpen Man in Wishtonia
Adrift in Hutanjia: War, Peace and Fuel

I put in for a transfer from my unit to a Ranger company a week ago. It’s not that I don’t love these guys in B Company. They’re great and I am grateful for such an easy command, but...It’s not what I signed on for. I signed up because there was a lack of combat experienced line officers in the HRA. I lead a company that makes sure that gas tanks are full. That’s about it. That’s our job, and we do it well, but there’s nothing really more glamorous to it.

I was trained as a combat officer, first in an Alpen Regiment, then, with advanced training at our home island base for the USG, as a commando officer. I did service with both the NEDM and the USG, and after a brutal war, I thought I was ready to take it easy for a bit and kick back with a logistical unit, but...I’m not. We stick gas hoses in tanks. Yeah, there’s a bit more to it, but overall, that’s it.

You may think that I would fear that my men in my command would see this blog and know about my plans. You’d be wrong. I don’t tell them about my blog, for one. Secondly, most Hutanjians don’t even own a computer. If they need to conduct business over a computer, most of them go to a library or community center that has them. Those that do own them or spend enough time on them at these public areas are probably not going to be trolling Neu Engollian blog servers. So, I think I’m safe.

Eventually, if I do get the transfer, I will have to tell them. I am perfectly willing to do that. I think they’ll understand. I will miss them, but I just feel like my talents are being way underutilized in a logistical refueler company.

I have been wondering too, along those same lines, how hard my HRA bosses are looking at stuff like Neu Engollian blogs. If they saw some of the stuff I wrote, even though I don’t feel I’m being very critical and also I’m pulling from open source material, would they cut me loose?
Maybe. Ultimately, I don’t care. It’s been a good ride, but I’m ready for another adventure, anyway, same Army or not.

I’m way more homesick now, even though I thought I always disliked the cold. (Strange coming from a mountain trooper, eh?) I feel like I need to head back to the Confederacy eventually, and if given the opportunity to do that sooner, I’d probably take it. I do love this Republic, my adopted home, too, don't get me wrong. But it's not the same.

Alternatively, I have been thinking about buying a bar that’s up for sale in southern Vesselle called ‘Stoney’s’. It fills up with expats like me - Neu Engollians, New Edomites, other nationals that were USG and there’s even a Falkie (sort of derogatory term for a Falkasian) named Gorodev who’s friendly enough. He won’t tell us what he did during the War, and no one’s really pressed him on it.
The Falkasians still have a presence with a large base near Norritts, the Cardwithian capital, as well as several other outposts and bases around the Cardwiths. We're not all friends yet, but we can sit down at a bar and have a drink and not shoot each other. Pretty sure this guy has been vetted, otherwise, how could he have gotten access to Vesselle?

Anyway, I could settle here, but it won’t solve my homesick problem. Do I just need a quick holiday back home to visit friends and family, or is it calling me back for good? These are the things that go through the head of a guy like me.

Some of you have emailed me about why I wax on about the War instead of telling stories about my current situation. This is probably as close as I’ll get to that, but for the reasons stated above. Again, I love my command. They’re great, but we fill gas tanks in military vehicles. That’s it. It’s not that exciting to write about. The War is what has had and will continue to have a major effect on the area and so I feel it’s important to cover it. So many bizarre actions occurred that I haven’t even touched the surface of yet. Like all the commando/special operations raids. I’m going to get into that next, as I feel it really helps to convey the true scope of the War and for those who don’t know about them, they will be really fascinating.

Thanks for the emails and commentary on my blog. I never expected I’d effect this many people, but apparently so. I’ll get back to lighthearted cultural stuff again soon, I promise, but I’m on a tear with this War stuff, so I feel like I need to get it out of my system. Thanks again.

Small ops, big payoffs and Mossview Park

Postby Hutanjia » Sat Jun 10, 2017 9:17 pm

An Alpen Man in Wishtonia
Commandos and Capers Part One

So, I mentioned the commando raids earlier. There were a few back and forth, but most of them, to be honest, were pulled off by the Cards and not our side. The major ones I wanted to cover, that were real game changers, were the two Mossview Park prisoner detention camp raids (Yep, you heard that correct, not one but two!), the assassination team sent in to Norritts to take out Nellis (or any high value Card or Falkie target), the Chastille market bombings, the Norselle and Montvieux invasions, and the biggest ones of all, the Card/Falkie invasion of Panto Leto and the PAST hit squads that were simultaneously sent after General Wakala, General Merari, and Colonel Moller, the Hutanjian, New Edomite and USG commanders on West Cardwith respectively.

Where to start? It’s a lot isn’t it? For what is some small time war in some corner of some forgot about region, you would think that maybe a couple masterminded operations would be more than enough, but this war had all those, plus some that in comparison, aren’t worth mentioning. Fact of the matter was that there was a lot more going on here and international involvement far beyond the scope of what should have been expected for a small ‘backwater’ nation. I don’t think of Hutanjia as that, I just know they’re thought of in many policy circles that way.

You had New Edom and Falkasia both wanting to get a piece of the pie, or altruistically wanting to come to the rescue of their respective allies, Hutanjia and the Cardwiths. When Falkasia wasn’t going to be able to provide troops, ships and aircraft on a scale that the Cards wanted, they decided to seek more Socialist allies. (Falkasia isn’t Socialist at all). They brought in the ISVC (International Socialist Volunteer Corps). Actually, Charles Nellis came up with that brilliant brainstorm. So then you had all these communist and socialist nations getting involved, through the ISVC, and hence you had a lot of anti-communist nations wanting to send aid and arms to Hutanjia.

Where am I going with all this? What does all the big picture have to do with the small action special operations I’m about to describe? Well, such operations need funding, they need trained operatives/troops, and in some cases, such as the Panto Leto raid, they need a full fleet and transport a whole region away. None of that would be possible had there not been interest in the two sides in the war hoping to prop up their proxies. A network global wide that could support agents, insurgent cells, and PR spin doctors and lobbyists that continued to seek out more funding for more operations, big and small.

Where to start? Probably the most bizarre operation of all, the Hutanjian raid on Hutanjians to free enemy prisoners. Let me get into that next.

An Alpen Man in Wishtonia
Commandos and Capers Part Two: Mossview Park

Mossview Park is a small town that you would be hard pressed to imagine was just meters from the thick jungle in some parts, but it definitely is that. It’s a very short ride from where our base is right now in fact, south of Vesselle, still on the small portion of Nesselberg that isn’t ‘The Wilds’, but as near to it as you can get.

Most people these days, when referring to Mossview Park are not talking about the town, however, they’re talking about the prisoner detention center, or POW camp if you prefer, that is just outside the town.

During the first months of the War, droves of UFF (the UFF isn’t interchangeable with Cardwithian because a lot of Hutanjians fought against their own government under the UFF flag), rebels that were captured during failed attempts at conducting open battle. There were even a couple Falkasians, FSIS advisers, that were at the camp, captured with their UFF units.

Conditions were horrible there, and the camp was run by the KHS, which as we know after talking about the Mongoose, was a horrible idea on the Kingdom’s part. Prisoners were regularly tortured, starved and beat. Disease was rampant and they had to subsist on muddy, polluted water and gruel. Needless to say, tons of prisoners died. Allegedly there were piles of bodies scattered throughout the camp, and they didn’t bother to cremate them on a regular basis.

During a couple fierce battles on Nesselberg, the UFF took a beating as New Edomite and USG forces were finally arriving to bolster the Hutanjians. The most major battle was at Qomplek, where the UFF line was smashed, the village was destroyed and so was what was the 7th UFF Regiment. Literally, they retired that number out of the regimental line up even once the People’s Cardwithian Army was established.

A whole new batch of UFF prisoners were bound for Mossview Park and other camps. Also, the first major groups of allied prisoners were captured, including a few New Edomites and USG soldiers and pilots.

There were other battles, and then there was the first big push campaign, the Hutanjian/allied invasion of West Cardwith and North Cardwith islands, which involved the previously said special operations forces invasions of Norselle on West Cardwith (by New Edomite Lancers and Hutanjian Rangers), and Montvieux, East Cardwith (by USG forces as a diversionary attack to make the Cards and Falkies think all the landings might be on East Cardwith.

Montvieux failed, but Norselle was a success and the New Edomites managed to hold it into the armistice. A third of northern West Cardwith was captured and North Cardwith fell to the allied forces.

An armistice was called and during that time, a prisoner exchange was arranged to happen near Ourapeka, Kenega, where those USG and New Edomite prisoners, plus some top Hutanjian officers, would be exchanged for dozens of UFF officers and any Falkasian prisoners. The only problem was that the KHS would not give up the UFF and Falkasian prisoners from Mossview Park, despite demands from the Royal Hutanjian Army command to do so.

The KHS refused to cooperate, and so happened the first raid on Mossview Park, where a combined force of USG commandos from the infamous Lambda Company and Hutanjian Rangers, including the future HUTCENTCOM in Chief, a Major Fotona, broke through the gates, and in one instance, infiltrated undercover. The KHS guards were killed, along with some of the admin staff, and some, but not all of the prisoners were released. I can’t get into all the details as I don’t really know them all. The raid is still somewhat classified and what story is out there is provided by the prisoners that were actually freed or survived the War.

The prisoner exchange happened as scheduled. The Card and Falkasian officers were cleaned up and brought back to decent health, enough for the exchange. We got back our top guys, as they did theirs. The armistice was broken a few months later by the Cardwithian attempt to retake West and North Cardwith, but again a story for another time.

Administration of the camp was taken from the KHS and given to the Royal Hutanjian Army. Conditions improved, but they were never quite where they should be for a POW camp that adhered to WA and other international humanitarian regulations.

A second raid, this time by FSIS and UFF commandos, happened towards the end of the War, in order to liberate the remaining Card/UFF prisoners, but also to seize documents that would reveal what had happened at the Camp and turn international opinion against the Hutanjians. They were somewhat successful on that front, but world opinion, those that cared anyway, was already pretty partisanly divided between Republican Hutanjia and the socialists and communists of the Cardwiths and ISVC.

Mossview Park was put out of commission after this raid and has been razed to the ground and bulldozed over since. Not the town, just the camp. Although, all the guards and their families that had lived in the town were moved. The guards that had worked at the camp, if KHS, had been imprisoned by the current Hutanjian regime or hunted down. Those that worked there during the HRA tenure were quietly moved off Nesselberg and their identities remain protected, but for a few who have been exposed by investigative journalists.

Next, I’ll talk about the Panto Leto raid and also the assassination hit squads sent by PAST and the Cardwithian special operations forces. Thanks for sticking with me.

Panto Leto

Postby Hutanjia » Sat Jun 10, 2017 9:28 pm

An Alpen Man in Wishtonia
Commandos and Capers Part Three: We’re just gonna hide this island here...

Panto Leto.

No, I don’t know what it means, but I know it doesn’t mean ‘Little Pants’. It’s an island in the region of Teremara, in the Madurin Sea. Some ways off the southern coast of Terre des Gaules aka Gaul. New recruits have been departing the port of Touloux, Gaul since long before the history of air travel to dock at Scauri, Panto Leto. Since air travel, they land at the Rimuinnen airfield near Campobello on Panto Leto. That’s what I did so many years ago.

Let’s back track. Panto Leto island was ruled over by Naples, one of the Roman City States, up until the early 19th Century. When Emperor Ney took over Gaul (Terre Des Gaules) and sent his armies out to conquer Teremara, one of the first lands they conquered was the weak, loose collection of cantons of the Neu Engollon Confederacy. With the help of allies, Neu Engollon threw off the Gaulic occupational armies and the traitorous puppet Helvetic Republic, ruled by Peter Ochs, to regain independence. Not only that, but in the process they took over territory from both Gaul and whole Roman city states which became the cantons of Cote d’Azur, Rhone, Comte-Alpe, Piemonte, and Liguria.

With the addition of Liguria and Cote d'Azur, Neu Engollon became a coastal nation! Birth of the Neu Engollian navy!

Also during that time, the Uli Schwyz Regiment (the USG) came to the aid of their parent nation and helped to fight the Gauls and drive them back. For reward for their valiant service they were given Panto Leto, that remote island in the Madurin Sea. It was a win-win for Neu Engollon. They were able to boot the Uli Schwyz off their mainland soil, as some of their contracts had started to become embarrassing to the Confederacy and put their diplomats in overdrive. The mercenary regiment was the most infamous of mercenary units in the Confederacy, but not the only one by any means. That is to say that there were quite a few through the ages, but the Uli Schwyz caused the most consternation and controversy for the Confederacy, and probably effected policy the most towards mercenaries, or what we call Private Military Companies and contractors these days.

So, the Uli-Schwyz, later to become the USGSC, had their own home island base to train, house and stage their troops from. This is where all the secret agreements come in. Panto Leto was removed from subsequent maps, not just in the Confederacy of Neu Engollon, but in Gaul and the Roman city states, as well, due to secret agreements and obligations. (They were pretty guilt ridden for beating up on Neu Engollon). In fact, for a time, the only nation in the Madurin basin that showed Panto Leto on maps at all was Austrakia, a long time foe of the Confederacy.

Not only were they wiped off the maps, but Panto Leto saw almost zero mention in popular press and even academic journals, until the raid brought it back into the spotlight in 2014, of course.

In return for this favor of anonymity, along with relocating to the island, the Uli Schwyz agreed to cycle through soldiers of the Neu Engollon Defense Militia, give them the experience of a couple contracts, and release them to rejoin the Militia with this combat experience. This happened for decades upon centuries and is rumored to continue to occur to this day. Some expose journalists have brought this to light, most famously in the Telleursville Times in 2015, with the commentary of anonymous government and military officials, but there’s still never been any official Neu Engollian affirmation of the unofficial policy and it’s likely there never will be.

In 2014, it was assumed that this agreement was still safeguarded and the anonymity of Panto Leto was secure. Record numbers of recruits were being shipped in. They were flown in from Touloux, Gaul to the Island to bolster the ranks and answer the demand to add regiments to the Uli Schwyz roster. These flights were chartered flights that had automatic clearance from the Touloux tower and had a minimum of code words to verify with Rimuinnen, the main airfield of Panto Leto. Rimuinnen Airfield was named for a Finnish Uli officer that was killed during the Crescent Bay contract. Originally it was called Khaddiuggia prior to 1951.

Next, how the bad guys slipped in under the radar...or way over the radar depending on your perspective.

Thanks again for your enthusiastic response to my blog. I am so happy to have so many fans.

An Alpen Man in Wishtonia
Commandos and Capers Part Four: We’re just gonna sneak a fleet by you here...

So, we were talking about Panto Leto, the Uli-Schwyz home base island that no one was supposed to know about. Problem was, the Cards figured it out. Even before the Falkasians, the Cardwithian intelligence network, now known as the CID, Cardwithian Intelligence Directorate, had unlocked the mystery. They had sent agents out to collect open source material on the home island and finally locked in to its location. Part of this discovery had been due to agents infiltrated posing as new USG recruits, who flew out from Touloux and to make sure, timed the flight.
Larger friendly nations, including Falkasia, confirmed suspicions as they could utilize satellite photography to pinpoint where such an island would be that might be so many hours out from the Gaulic southern coast.

The USG doesn’t just recruit from Neu Engollon, although, I would think that was obvious from what I’ve said before. They pull from veterans from militaries across the globe, and almost always opt for veterans that are of elite forces - their nations equivalent of special operations forces. The main process for vetting these recruits goes through the Intexa, the support division of the Uli Schwyz that handles procurement, recruitment, intelligence, contracting, legal, and logistical issues, among many other responsibilities.

The Intexa are a powerful organization unto themselves, separate from the USG, of which in reality they are a part.

Mistakes were made those few years ago that helped open the gate to the greatest tragedy in USG/Uli-Schwyz history. Initially and shockingly, despite numerous contracts against Marxist enemies, recruits from socialist and communist nations were not originally excluded from recruitment to the Uli Schwyz throughout this period. This goes back to the contract in Red China in the 1940’s and up to the Hutanjian contract. To be fair, I don’t think it was much of an issue as there just wasn’t a great flux of recruits from such nations.
Many Marxist nations were contributing their veteran soldiers to the ISVC as ‘volunteers’ rather than knowingly releasing them to serve in PMCs - a very capitalist institution. Some combat veterans from such nations were virulently anti-Marxist, and were not welcome back in their home socialist countries. That’s where it gets tricky because that’s a very easy way to create a double agent.

Some of the nations that are and were contributors to the ISVC, also released specially prepared moles to the Intexa induction process. A handful made it through, as the Intexa weren’t exactly slouching, but with sheer numbers, a few were bound to pass through the process.
These ‘faux PMC troopers’ formed the basis of a fifth column on Panto Leto. They recorded schedules, transportation processes, defenses, and any other detail they could glean from the island, which were then transmitted back to the ISVC and the CID and FSIS.

Rumor has it that one Strolingradi (a very communist nation) recruit was caught in none other than Major Rene Ouelt’s office. Ouelt was the S2 of the whole of the USG Regiments, until his untimely death during the raid. I think that Ouelt had to know something was up at that point, but by then the wheels were in motion and it was already too late. There were enough plants that had passed on info to their respective nations’ intel agencies, who then, via ISVC channels, passed it along to the Cardwithians.

*Just another side note: You might wonder why officers in the USG in such high positions were only Colonels and Majors, such as the S2 (Intelligence and Security Chief Officer), or a regimental command - all Colonels in the USG. The reason for that is that due to tradition, there’s only always one General of the Regiments, which for the past dozen years has been Nelson Tell. So, if you compare it to another paramilitary structure or national military structure, The top General of the Uli-Schwyz/USG would be like the Commander in Chief, the 5 star General or Field Marshall. The Regimental and Squadron Colonels would be the underling Generals that report to that CIC.

The training for the Panto Leto Raid took months, but all of PASG (People’s Action Strike Groups), two units consisting of about 800 men and women total from the best PAST (People’s Action Strike Teams) cells and UFF rebel groups trained in Gragastavia with FSIS black ops forces trained hard on how to penetrate the USG home island. With the intel and forces gathered, the Falkasians sent a full fleet to isolate and bombard the island, along with transports that would land the Card and Falkasian commandos.

The first wave was Cardwithian commandos that infiltrated into Touloux through false passports and covers. They trickled in to Gaul by pairs and trios, assembling the group until the time came that they would hijack the flight on the Touloux tarmac, as well as take over the Touloux tower so that no warning could be given to either the Gaul government or the USG home island.

This group, despite some near discovery moments on their journey, landed at Rimuinnen Airfield in order to swiftly swarm out and take over the airfield from the security elements just minutes before the Falkasian fleet arrived in the waters off Panto Leto, bearing Cardwithian and Falkasian commandos ready to land on the shores of the Madurinite island.

The battle took two days to subdue the island, despite a skeletal force there for defense and the fact that many of the air defenses were smashed within the first hour. The USG soldiers and recruits, who weren’t initially killed or captured, were formed into defense units, many who hid out in the Bugeber Field training grounds in the middle of the island to launch hit and run raids on the Card and Falkasian invaders. The USG was family, even to many of the newest recruits. The fact that the families of beloved officers were on the line, as well as the hundreds of support personnel families that lived on the southeastern part of the island at Kamma, was not lost on the brave but vastly outnumbered defenders.

Eventually, they were whittled and hunted down, and all resistance ceased. The last of the air patrols were shot down or surrendered.
General Tell, who was inbound to the island at the time of the attack, was rescued from the sea after his air transport was shot down. He was detained by the Falkasians, but kept as a personal guest of the Falkasian Admiral in charge of the invasion.

The Cards, without informing their Falkasian allies, had an ulterior motive to raiding the island and began to round up all the families of the USG officers. The support personnel families they let go for the most part and just cordoned them off in Kamma. The USG dependendent family members and any USG officers captured were to be held for ransom, with the major demand being full withdrawal of USG forces from the Wishton Sea. While the Falkasians interfered with this plan, and the ransom wasn’t initially paid, their goal was ultimately successful as the bulk of the USG forces were pulled from the theater in stages and the old contract was voided. Of course, the War was over, as Hespatu ceded West and North Cardwith to the Cards, so there wasn't any more need for the USG, anyway.

Teremaran reaction to the raid was initially mute. Neither Neu Engollon, Gaul or the Romans or any other nearby national forces came to the aid of the USG island, despite radio pleas. No one in the region wanted to risk a full out war with Falkasia, so Panto Leto was left on its own to dangle to its fate. The Schwyz Regiment, the only inbound reinforcements, had quickly evacuated Nevorn, despite strong Hutanjian protest, in order to come to the aid of the home island.

Another oddity was how the Falkasian fleet happened to cruise into the Madurin Sea and up to Panto Leto without any of the aforementioned powers being concerned or sending along warning, which would likely have tipped off the Intexa intel division. Yes, Falkasian fleets are known to go on maneuvers, but considering the tension and the significance of Panto Leto and the fleet's trajectory, it must have been obvious to some. Unless, Panto Leto was really off the radar of the Madurinite nations. There may have been some serious radar and cyber traffic that I'm not aware of, but I doubt it. That surely would've come to light by now, and as I said, that would have alerted the defense of the island, via the Intexa.

The Schwyz Regiment arrived on scene, paradropping onto the island and clashing with the withdrawing Card/Falkasian forces. Had the Falkasian fleet and forces retained a defensive perimeter instead of beginning a self imposed pull out, it’s sure that the Schwyz Regiment would have been slaughtered in their attempts to relieve the home island from the invasion. WIth most of the enemy forces pulled out or on their way, fighting was minimal and control of Panto Leto was given back over to the USG, with the rapid negotiations of the Falkasian Admiral and General Tell, although technically he was still under duress.

As more and more USG forces arrived, they began to clean up and restore order to the island, hunting down any Card commandos that remained, not having made it out to the Falkasian fleet in the confusion of the end of hostilities or having had their communications cut that would have told them to do so. It was a time of mourning as many USG soldiers as well as civilians on the island had been killed in the fighting. It was probably the darkest days in the history of the Regiments, going back half a millennia to their founding in the 15th century.

The Battle for Panto Leto was also the only battle of the Hutanjian War to not occur in the Wishton Sea region. Despite tensions being high, and Neu Engollon and New Edom coming to an early mobilization level, Falkasia, nor any of the ISVC nations, didn’t experience an attack on their homelands, and neither did New Edom and its territories via those marauding Falkies and Cards.

Next, I will cover the fantastical raids on West Cardiwth to take out the heads of the Hutanjian/Allied command and collapse their defense of the occupied territory. Thanks again for all your positive emails and support for my blogging. I’m enjoying this a lot, even with some of the dark stuff we’re covering here.

Reassignment and Tragedy

Moving On & Making Tribute

So, I finally heard back about my transfer. It’s going to happen. I’m looking at a Company commander slot for D Company, 2nd Battalion, 10 Infantry Regiment. Ya, I’m pretty excited. The 10th have a great reputation.

I admit I sat around for the first week, just expecting it to happen. Then, it was explained to me by some friends how things work in the HRA as far as getting the posts you want. Aside from having the nepotistic resources to call on, that is. Palms needed to be greased and rum and beer needed to land on the right desks. So, the second week, I set about making that happen. Now, three weeks on, my efforts have finally paid off.

I’m sure that to some degree, that happens in the NEDM, but it was never that blatant or widely known that I could see.

Doesn’t matter, I got the job. Now I just have to break the news to my current command. I have some ideas, but I think the best way is to call in all my lieutenants and top NCO’s in a room and just tell them. Then it will trickle down to the men. Then I’ll deal with it from there.

Now… I have to say, for a bunch of fuelers, we never knew that we’d actually get attacked. So, irony of all ironies, I’m itching to see action in a combat arms unit and sure enough, we had to deal with an attack by a UFF ambush. Due to the flammable nature of our trucks, we had two go up in flames. I lost 8 men under my command, either burned up in the trucks or from enemy rounds.

I really don’t even know how to feel about it all, other than the rest of us are glad to be alive.
We fought out of the ambush, along with our escort from the 14th. We made it and it makes me strangely invigorated to feel alive. Like how I felt back in my USG days.

On the other hand, I’m deeply saddened.
I’d like to get more into how it all went down, but I don’t really feel that I can, or that if would be productive. As far as I know the engagement is classified. I don't really know how to deal with this and broach the subject that I'm leaving the company during their time of greatest need.

Next, I’m going to cover the hit squads. It sounds cold, but I need to keep my mind off what I just told you about and so I will keep writing. Thanks again for all your support and feedback. It’s been very helpful and constructive. I appreciate your sympathy emails and blog comments, but they're not necessary. Some of my friends who are here and heard about the incident are already sending me strong support. I do appreciate it.
You want to support me? Show up to Stoney's and buy me a beer. I need to march on.

Hydra's Heads

Commandos and Capers Part Five: Cutting Off the Heads

So, I mentioned before, the Cards went all out to try to take out the head commanders of the defense of West Cardwith. The problem with their plans was that many of the most skilled personnel they needed had been yanked for the Panto Leto Raid, which we covered earlier. PASG had first pick of all the best operators from the PAST cells.

At this point, there was no proper special operations force of the Cardwithian People’s Army, they were formed later after the War from the core of PAST and elite soldiers. CID (Cardwithian Intelligence Directorate) - Black Ops also didn’t exist yet. They instead scooped up all the rest of the UFF and PAST fighters they could bring in, in order to get urgently needed assassination squads out in the field.
One might feel, especially a USG vet, that all the top tier commandos they had were in Teremara, attacking Panto Leto, but as for myself and many of my comrades would agree, they still had plenty to spare rampaging around the battlefields in the Cardwiths and Nesselberg.

As the front collapsed and all had become chaos, these three teams looked for their opportunity. Their commander was a mysterious woman named Lelah, who from all the legends out there, was one of the fiercest, most active UFF agents during the War. We only know about her now because she has risen to the level of Director of PAST and some of her previous exploits have been released to the public. (Kadapke, the previous PAST leader, has now moved over to the new post of CID Director and by all accounts, he is better suited to intelligence operations rather than active black operations.) Also, some say she is the adopted daughter of Charles Nellis, or at least a close family friend. Either way, that doesn’t take away from her proficiency as a cover operations leader.

The first team was sent after General Joaquim Merari, the New Edomite commander. The air superiority situation was chaotic, as were things on the ground. Taking advantage of this, the UFF operatives were able to land the team in a VTOL closest to where their last bit of intel placed Merari’s command post. Due to the better security behind the New Edomite lines than Hutanjian lines, they couldn’t rely on any backup on the ground, as most of the UFF rebels and Card irregulars sent to aid their operations had already been dealt with by New Edomite Lancer companies.

Their mission was a failure and the team was wiped out just a few kilometers from where Merari actually was. They were surrounded by Lancers and Rover teams, but they refused to surrender, and chose to fight it out.

The second team was infiltrated by boat into Anjoux, the northern coastal city of West Cardwith. Loyal Card agents within the city helped to hide them until the time was right. Colonel Johann Moller, the USG Schwyz Regiment commander, was helping to organize the retreat of allied forces from the island, many of whom would be leaving through the major port, aside from the Hesttens evacuation. The team caught Moller’s entourage at a southern crossroads as they were inspecting routes into the city and they attacked with RPGs, small mortars and grenades. Moller was wounded by shrapnel, but survived the attempt. Again, the team was wiped out by the enraged USG security detail and a quick response force, rather than surrender to the hated mercenaries.

The third attempt was on General Wakala, the Hutanjian front commander. As his convoy raced north to Anjoux to set up their last command post for the West Cardwith campaign, they were cut off by a road block that had been quickly set up after the last patrol had passed that section of highway. The emplaced UFF squad were actually able to call in air support to aid in the attack, and a Cardwithian VTOL gunship raked the convoy, as the team hit it with AT and RPGs from the ground. The Card gunship was chased off by Allied air support, but it was too late. Wakala’s security detail and all the staff officers in the convoy were wiped out, including the General. This threw the Hutanjians into some chaos as they attempted to get the rest of their top commanders, including Wakala’s newly appointed deputy (his XO was killed in the convoy raid) hidden. Going to ground, they weren’t as effective at guiding the fighting retreat and the Hutanjian side of the retreat turned into a rout, even with USG and New Edomite assistance trying to get things back on track as far as the rear guard went.

Some of you rugby fans out there might recognize the name of Wakala, even if you’re not an avid military history fan. The General was the father of Samson Wakala, the rugby union national team captain and top player for the Spiders. Wakala, senior that is, was also one of the better field commanders in the HRA and was probably destined to take over the top spot of Commander in Chief of the HRA CENTCOM when General Fotona retired. He was one of a handful that would have been considered. He had distinguished himself at Qomplek and Palegata, as well as several smaller battles and was shown to be more than a competent Regimental and Divisional leader.

Wakala’s death wasn’t only a strategic blow to the Hutanjians, it was a propaganda one. The Cards made full usage of the success, along with the Panto Leto raid and the Chastille market bombings, to show that they would stop at nothing, and had few restrictions on hitting Hutanjians at the ground of their choosing. Repeated pirate radio and TV broadcasts, a social media campaign (which was just coming into being in Wishtonia) and paper media all said as much about the hit on Wakala, in some less or more words, depending. Socialist allies of the Cardwiths (ISVC nations, mostly) were crowing about the victory around the world.

I’m certain that this was the final blow that pushed President Hespatu to withdraw from the Cardwiths and seek an armistice with Nellis and the Falkasians. It made him a very unpopular president in some circles, as Hutanjians thought he was throwing away all they had gained with a heavy, bloody price. For others, it was welcome relief and they had come to the realization that this war might never end. Many were tired of the fighting and constant loss and no longer interested in forcing the Cardwiths to live under occupation, or be forced into union, depending on one’s view of it.

The War ended a few weeks later at the agreed upon ceasefire time. The last of any remaining allied forces (most had evacuated) were withdrawn from North and West Cardwith. Prisoners were exchanged a month later, per the treaty, the Hutanjians could not hold on to any UFF or Cardwithian prisoners, as they had done the previous temporary cessation of hostilities. Hespatu and Nellis sat down at a table in Kenega City again, and this time, for better or worse, Hespatu signed a document that gave Hutanjian recognition to the Democratic Socialist Republic of the Cardwith Islands.

I will be taking a break from blogging here for a couple weeks as I pack up and get settled in my new command. I’ll have a lot of paperwork to review and a lot of meetings with new officers, superiors and subordinates. Thanks for reading and commenting and I look forward to interacting with all of you again in a bit. Until then, I remain...
