The Zwangzug Zebras!

The Zebras are a defensively-minded team overall, eschewing many power hitters in favor of patience at the plate. Pitchers, likewise, tend more towards finesse than speed. There is no DH used at our home stadium, the Worm Hole (located in Spenson).

*players are new; everyone else showed up last tournament when the team made its reappearance.

Manager: Louise Dunburk (Frischberg Flash). Known for being very quiet with the press; legend has it that she is extremely long-winded inside the clubhouse, although it's possible that's just a story spread by players who think it's funny to amuse the media with a different side of her.

Starting rotation:
#12, Eloise Cardenal, L/L, Weegham Rainmakers
#13, Ernest Mauv-Strane, R/L, Arlington Aurora
#18, Bret Rodin-Lous, R/R, 102d Gray Sox
#21, Chloe Willow, R/R, Nuel Panthers*
#30, Austin Iles-Falch, L/L, Spenson Worms*

Bullpen:
#43, Sonya Churn, R/R, Inver Millers, (used in high-leverage, short-duration situations)
#40, Guillermo Torrance, R/R, Nuel Panthers, (ditto)*
#9, Ruby Karum-Ito, R/R, Belpub Wildcats, (middle relief)
#20, Sam Quillibag, L/L, Frischberg Flash, (middle relief)
#25, Anton Osirin, R/R, Noh Weir Red-Tails, (middle relief)
#38, Rebecca Ax-Whim, R/R, Spenson Worms, (long relief)
#16, Naomi Kaur-Davis, L/L, Arlington Aurora, (long relief)*

Starting lineup:
#4, Bruce Nanahara, shortstop, R/R, Frischberg Flash*
#22, Petra Rhom-Nair, center field, L/R, Arlington Aurora
#8, Marc Fleuggemann, catcher, R/R, Spenson Worms
#7, Dean Volir-Tas, left field, L/L, Inver Millers
#15, Stanley Rezzio, third base, R/R, Bassabook Grey Socks
#3, Eliza Beaucorde, first base, L/L, Logrove Dolphins
#6, Jeanine Hansen, second base, L/L, Inver Millers
#17, Rachel Brions, right field, R/R, Hadiln Tigers
pitcher

Bench:
#24, Fiona Subel-Burvin, catcher, R/R, Zwischen Bears
#5, Clark Diazona, corner infield, R/R, Bassabook Grey Socks
#37, Hubert Belquist, outfield, L/L, Nuel Panthers (DH if needed, bats fifth)*
#14, Lek Yee, outfield, R/R, FTC Roosters*
#23, Imogene Nuren-Vons, middle infield, R/R, Frischberg Flash

The country is currently processing the revelations that hey, we have to edit these "issue" things; that there's a population of sentient (but non-anthropomorphic) zebras who've been quietly living in the southwestern forests; and that outgoing Composite Minister Felix Wainwright was actually trying to protect the country from various repeated terrorist incidents by a ridiculous time travel scheme, a fact which only came to public light due to his unwitting admission of it all over the radio during the last WBC. It is unclear which, if any, of these will have an important impact in the long run.

Factbook is ludicrously out of date by now and just linked for tradition's sake. If you RP first, please follow my lineup and rotation (or ICly justify any substitutions). Feel free to pick my runscorers, RP injuries to my players, and eject my players. You can be relatively creative; however, if it's something I couldn't feasibly do to your country (say, literal godmoding with permanent effects), please telegram me first.

Notes

Since World Baseball Classic 38, 28 years have passed in West Saintland due to a mysterious acceleration of time. During that time, West Saintland became a place totally unrecognizable to those who remember the old Saintland or even the pre-time warp West Saintland. At the 3rd West Sanctii election, Feministvs Sanctvsterra won an overwhelming majority. As King Petrus XX became increasingly frustrated with his failure to produce a male heir, Queen Veronica assumed more and more power, aligning herself closely with Parliament. Over the years, the theology of the Church of Saintland drifted until it was unrecognizable, with a Goddess replacing the old male God under Matriarch Innocentia I, who taught that Maria, Daughter of God, was the true Savior. In the following years, isolated from the rest of the multiverse, West Sanctii society became more and more matriarchal until it was almost the mirror image of what it had been under King Paulus XV. East Saintland, run by King Andreas, had been founded upon the old ways and it stayed true to them. Surprisingly, an uneasy but lasting peace broke out between the two Kingdoms, as neither believed they were capable of defeating the other in a war and, besides, it was very convenient to be able to exchange each other's problem citizens to maintain the peace in their respective Kingdoms. Today, the East is a ruthless dictatorship where robotic AIs called cBots (short for "control bots") enforce the teachings of the Fundamentalist True Church while the West is a "feminist democracy" where the government maintains its hold on power through laws prohibiting unmarried men from voting and the complete lack of a secret ballot.

Among the dozen princesses, there are 3 that play baseball for West Saintland. They include Princess Gloria, considered by many to be the finest Sanctii hurler since King Paulus XIV, Princess Olivia, a shortstop who has already broken her own record for most stolen bases in a season multiple times and Princess Sophia, who has won the triple crown of baseball twice in her first three seasons in the Sanctii league. Princess Sophia has also managed to steal about as many bases as she's hit home runs over those 3 seasons in the West Sanctii domestic league. The 3 princesses, all of whom play for St. Petrus in the West Saintland league, have led their team to 3 consecutive Saintland Series victories against the Eastern champions. Princess Gloria combines a fastball that has been clocked as high as 102 miles per hour with a knuckleball and a slider that is considered virtually unhittable. Her one weakness is her tendency to try and force the knuckleball, even on days when it simply isn't effective.

The West Phoenician Confederates are rearing to head into the World Baseball Classic #40.

After a magnificent previous season which saw them place 4th, the Confederates have been practicing hard and long to keep up to the standard that saw them progress as far as they did when international media outlets had them not progressing passed the initial games.

A post season training program had them working on cardio, pitching and relaxation techniques. As well as 1 week was spent away at a spa retreat pampering the team that has won the hearts of many in West Phoenicia.

MD 1: Will see West Phoenicia travel to Somersville for their first away game.
MD 2: The Confederates will host the Equestrian States
MD 3: West Phoenicia will travel to Bongo Johnson for their away game with the team.

The Confederates have the ability for a strong start the the World Baseball Classic by taking on and beating each of these teams to show dominace in their pool like they did with the previous season.

"Alright," K.C. said as he stood up at the front of the bus, "Nice ceremony; Jack, thank you f'r not startin' any fights..."

Jack cracked a grin as the team laughed.

"Anyway, I have the schedule here, we play three games in as many days, then get a break. We're gonna be zig-zagging across the world. Long story short, this is gonna be a pain in the arse."

Some of the guys groaned.

"I know. This first cluster, we get one home game. All the teams we're playing are ranked within the top 32. First day, we go to South Yerfilag, number fifteen. Second day, we go home, we're playing Elgenstad, number thirty-two. Third game we go to... er... Hicanans in Exile."

The name got a few laughs.

"They're ranked twenty-five, fellas. It's no joke. Now, I don't know what to expect when we take the field here, but let's at least try to win the home game... or at least no get embarrassed, aye?"

"Yea," the team replied as a whole as the skipper sat back down and the ride to the airport continued as it was.

THIRD TIME A CHARM FOR A FIFTH CHAMPIONSHIP?

Schiltzberg once again returns for its eighth appearance in the World Baseball Classic. After winning four of its first five seasons, Schiltzberg seems to have hit a plateau, failing to win two championships in a row, finishing in third place in both WBC 38 and WBC 39. The time has come once again for the World Baseball Classic, which is hitting its fortieth season as a tournament, and Schiltzberg returns with full intentions of winning its fifth championship. The question is whether or not they will be able to do it. In this issue of the New Schiltzbierg Times Sports News, we will discuss this question but ultimately leave it up to you to decide your opinion on whether or not Schiltzberg will pull it off in WBC 40.

Opinion 1: They Will Not Win It

There is no question that Schiltzberg has an impressive history in the World Baseball Classic, but it is unrealistic to expect a fifth championship from the team this season. Even just the odds of it make it difficult to wrap your head around. Sure, Schiltzberg is a good team, and a good team will win the World Baseball Classic this season, but there are plenty of good teams participating this season, and the odds of Schiltzberg pulling off another win are slimmer because of all of this competition. In the past two seasons, such competition has proven to be an obstacle for Schiltzberg, which met its match against Ethane in WBC 38 and Nova Anglicana in WBC 39. Likely, another such worthy opponent will be able to eliminate Schiltzberg this season as well. Another thing to consider is that Schiltzberg is not the team that it used to be. Sure, there are all the same players as there were that played on the original Schiltzbergian team and have played on every team since because of Schiltzbergian superstition, but the fact is, those players are getting old, and they are no longer the young, eager-to-win team that they once were. They are no longer physically capable of competing with teams as good as some of the new rising powers, such as Frenline Delpha and Ethane. This is okay, but another obstacle to Schiltzberg's success in the future is its refusal to change. The same players have been playing on the team for eight seasons now with very little variation, and they simply are no longer as good as they used to be. If Schiltzberg wants to have success, they will need to stir things up in their clubhouse, getting some young, motivated players, maybe even getting a new manager, and this would allow them to compete at this level. It is true that Schiltzberg is the number one rank, but they have not had as much success in the past two seasons, and they will lose the rank points of their most recent championship win (WBC 37) at the end of this season. The legacy of Schiltzberg's championships will be forgotten as far as the ranks are concerned at the end of this season, unless Schiltzberg pulls off a win here, and this will likely lead to a downward spiral into mediocrity, which has been experienced by many good teams in the past, such as Qazox and Milchama, who were unable to maintain their dynasties for more than a few seasons. Schiltzberg will have to win this season if it wants to remain a relevant threat in this tournament, and as stated earlier, this seems to be very unlikely. There is no shame in being less than the best, and it is true that Schiltzberg's dynasty has lasted longer than most have in the history of the tournament, but Schiltzbergers have to get it out of their heads that they are still the best, and they have to be willing to accept that they are not as good as they used to be and make changes accordingly.

Opinion 2: They Will Win It

Schiltzberg is definitely due for another championship in WBC 40. The team's four titles in its first five seasons prove a level of dominance that is unparalleled by any team in the history of the World Baseball Classic. Now, with two seasons of fallow, what are the odds that Schiltzberg loses again? Also, keep in mind that these past two "fallow" seasons, these last two "losing" seasons, have indeed been seasons that any other team would consider to be great. Schiltzberg finished respectably in third place twice in a row, entering them into an elite group of teams that have made it to the semifinals five seasons in a row. The reason why these seasons are viewed as failures are simply because everyone has such great expectations for the Schiltzbergian team, more so than they have for any other team in World Baseball Classic history. This is more reason why Schiltzberg is bound to succeed in WBC 40, because their team is simply so good that a third place finish is seen as an absolute failure in the eyes of their players, coaches, and fans. Even with two seasons of not winning, Schiltzberg still remains as the number one rank in the world, making it still the team to beat in the upcoming season. In its first seven seasons, Schiltzberg went 169-67, giving them an unheard of winning percentage of 73.8% overall, and they have no plans to slow down any time soon. Their playing up until this point has truly been a legendary run, and odds are, they will continue this run into WBC 40.

Will Schiltzberg win it again this year? No one knows yet, but we'll keep you posted. Until then,

Alea iacta est - Part I

Unlike the rest of the HBA building, Wesley Jimenez's office was immaculate - the stark white walls and polished furniture heavily contrasted with the run-down government building they resided in. Similarly, the President of the Hicañan Baseball Association was similarly immaculate, dressed as sharply as Alex Cameron, the Phoenixes' manager, was dressed casually. A second man standing beside him, handsome and dark-skinned, appeared to be in his early forties. Cameron recognized him, but couldn't match the face to a name.

"Alex," the HBA president said, "I have someone I'd like you to meet. This is Hansel Ordoñez." The two shook hands. Cameron hadn't had great experiences with the ex-LBL star in the past, but they'd been mostly confined to his South Falls team losing to Ordoñez's New Llama Wizards. He knew neither Ordoñez himself nor why the HBA President had brought him here.

"Hansel is going to be your assistant manager this Classic," Wesley Jimenez continued. "He'll be able to connect to the players quickly, and we think he'll be good for team chemistry. He'd also benefit from studying under you as well, of course, and obviously you've been pretty swamped so far with not many coaches."

"I'm looking forwards to working with you, Mr. Cameron," Ordoñez added from his side. "It should be a very...fulfilling Classic together."

Something about the phrase seemed off. Cameron smiled, but turned back to Wesley Jimenez quickly: "It's only a one-Classic contract? What's Hansel doing afterwards?" Jimenez flinched - a brief movement, but visible. He recovered quickly, but it was too late. The Llamanean manager knew that Hansel Ordoñez would be his successor. And, based on Jimenez's past actions, Cameron would take him on no matter what happened. There was no doubt that Ordoñez was absolutely loyal to the HBA, more than he'd been shown to be.

For Cameron, it might have been easier to just line up another job at that point. But he wanted to stay on with the Phoenixes - they were a year removed from a Ro16 finish that he'd been instrumental in achieving. He had one Classic to make something happen before he was out of a job.

Jack relaxed in his hotel room the morning before their first game with teammate Michael Maguire, the team's best slugger, totally disregarding hotel rules and smoking cigarettes, making sure the windows were open so the smell wasn't overwhelming for whatever poor person would be cleaning their room later.

Michael had his computer out, playing a livestream of Julian Master's radio show. Master was one of the most incompetent sports talk hosts in the world; his opinions were only respected by pundits who knew nothing about sports, and the few Tennish who listened to him, like Michael, did it for a laugh. As he went through each group, one through eight, and gave his thoughts on who would be moving out of the group stage, the only thing that really stirred Jack from his nap was the lack of mention of their own team.

"No faith," he mumbled, taking a long drag. "Doesn't even mention us."

Michael chuckled. "You expect us to be hot shit just 'cause we made it?"

Jack shrugged, not even bothering to open his eyes. "Would've been nice to get some recognition. But I guess we're here to earn it, eh?"

"Excatly." Michael flicked a cigarette out the nearest open window. "Win a few games, turn a few heads, make a run."

"I think you're the only other one here who thinks we can. Everyone else seems so bloody lethargic."

"Can ya blame them? We're gonna be zig-zagging all around, playing almost every day... not something anyone here's used to."

"But that's the point of these things, isn't it?" Jack put out his cigarette in an ashtray he stole from one of the outside tables next to the pool. "We're here to prove people wrong and make a name for ourselves. Ya think Shiltzberg or any of these bastards started out just being the 1 seed?"

Michael nodded in agreement. "Well, this wouldn't be the first team you and I carry to a title." They were teammates on the Tallow RiverSharks, the current NBL champions.

Jack smirked as he finally sat up. "We did it once, we can do it again."

In front of an overflow crowd in Liverpool on Monday evening, the pitching staff of both All*Star teams kept their opponents subdued for much of the game with the exception of the 3rd and 4th innings.

The 24 players selected for the All*Star Game took the field to thunderous applause from Liverpudlians who had eagerly anticipated the matchup since it was announced prior to the season. Southern League's Absolon Hancock, of the Scott City Blue Jays, threw the first pitch, high and inside, at 6:00pm. Despite a handful of singles, no one made it past first base until the top of the 3rd Inning, Hughie Herman successfully stole second base from Hancock. Moments latter, Anthony Crawford lifted a ball well past the fence in outfield, giving the Northern League All*Stars a 2-0 advantage.

The Southern League responded in the following half of the inning, when Anaiah Hanson scored on a double blasted into the left field corner by Murrough Thayer. Rodge Walterson, who followed Thayer in the lineup, struck out on three pitches, failing to capitalize on the momentum to further alter the scoreline, which now stood at 2-1 in favor of the Northern League.

The bottom of the 4th inning would prove to be the decisive one, as the rest of the game passed in much the same way as the first two innings. With two outs remaining in the inning, Toviyyah Sherman hit a ground rule double just past the outstretched glove of Ceallachán Kunkel. He followed that up by stealing third base, a risky move considering Yann Christiansen's strong arm. Christiansen was caught sleeping however, and failed to react as Sherman reached third base standing up.

Meanwhile, Chizqiyahu Lennon was watching the unfolding events from within the Batter's Box. The Third Baseman from the Cadott Red Sox, not normally considered a power hitter, proved otherwise, as he launched Zebedee Aleshire's slider on a 458 foot ride well past right field, scoring both himself and Sherman. Lennon was named All*Star Game MVP.

With the 3-2 victory, the Southern League won the All*Star Game. The Liverpudlians didn't seem to mind much, even though their Mustang's own Évrard Woodward was on the losing side, as the cheers from the fans at the end of the game were just as loud as though at the beginning. Despite the relevantly uneventful contest, baseball seems to be really catching on in Liverpool, and the fans there may now be considered to be among the best in the league.

League play will resume on Wednesday, as the team's begin the 56 game Intra-League period of the season.

Nova Anglicana WBC 40 Roster

Image

Nickname: Lions
Acronym: NOV
Style Mod (if applicable): +1

Archbishop Stadium in the Capital of Londinium (35,000)
Image

Archbishop Stadium is the home stadium of the Londinium Capitols as well as the Nova Anglican national team. It is big and it plays big, with a serious nighttime marine layer, an enormous right-center gap known as "Triples Alley" and an imposing right field wall. It's not as hard on right-handed hitters, but is a fly ball pitcher's paradise. Many people are seen in the bay outside of the stadium attempting to catch home runs hit into the water or simply cruising the bay while enjoying the sound of the game on the radio.

Hosting: Home games against Cassadaigua

Yeoman Stadium in Eboracum (34,000)
Image

Yeoman Stadium is the home of the Eboracum Yeomen, located in Nova Anglicana's second-largest city. It is another pitcher's park, and especially difficult to get it out to right-center, but because of air resistance rather than distance to the fence. It recently hosted the 2nd BCC Finals, and the atmosphere at the ballpark and the culture of Eboracum make this a great destination.

Hosting: Home games against United States of Devonta

Royal Bank Park (31,000) in Durovernum Cantiacorum
Image

Royal Bank Park is home to one of the more successful clubs in recent NABL history, the DC Brewers. The park features a high right field wall with seats atop it, and lies beside the St. John River.

Hosting: Home games against Fauxia

Queen Charlotte Park (25,000) in Isca Dumnoniorum
Image

Queen Charlotte Park is the other newest park in the NABL, the home of the Isca Town Greens. It has recently undergone a green retrofit, and boasts solar panels and carbon neutrality. It plays neutral, favoring neither hitters nor pitchers.

Hosting: Home games against Mampris

Robert Webster Stadium (30,000) in Londinium
Image

"The Web" is the home of former expansion club Londinium Novas. The Novas haven't seen much success in the league yet, but their stadium is quite new. It is a bit of a wind tunnel, so bundle up for night games and look for low-scoring affairs without many home runs.

Hosting: Home games against Vermont of America

Starting Rotation (order as given)
RHP #11 Carson Whitten, 30 - Whitten was #1 pick years ago, elite curveball and 95 MPH fastball, current NT ace
RHP #19 Brendan Gunderson, 34 - power fastball at 96, solid changeup and curveball,
RHP #44 Damon Singleton, 26 - fastball at 92-96, peaks at 98; very good slider out-pitch; change-up is okay, good control
LHP #20 Darren Lawson, 25 - primary pitch is a cutter at 92-93, also has a big curve, a sweet changeup, and a decent slider; good control and strikeout numbers
RHP #36 Ben Clayton, 23 - combines 96 MPH fastball with 81 MPH hammer curveball, developed a decent change and slider, strikes out a ton and walks a ton
Bullpen
LHP #57 John O'Brien, 30, - three legitimate off-speed pitches, big slow curve is best, will be long reliever or spot starter
LHP #48 Will Thornton, 29, - sharp control plus a 96+ MPH fastball, decent change, fringy curveball
LHP #46 Grant Holmes, 30 - lefty specialist with a good slider, tall at 6'7
RHP #38 Sean Fletcher, 27 - 7th inning guy, hard fastball with run, secondary pitch is a knuckle curve
RHP #16 Chris Yates, 27 - fastball sits 95 and can touch 98 when he needs it to, combines it with a good slider and a change-of-pace 12-6 curve, good changeup, moves to bullpen after poor WBC 39 campaign
RHP #56 Damian Ryan, 23 - plus fastball at 93-95 with a good curveball, decent changeup and fringy slider; definite punch-out ability, but needs to get motion and walks under control; tall, slim frame
RHP #30 Lee Bradley, 25 - fastball 87-88 with a good amount of run, sharp slurve at 82 plus a decent changeup; submarine arm angle gets him a lot of outs, but stuff is legit
RHP #43 Casey Burke, 26 - former 9th round draft pick has burst on to the scene for Newfield, 150/48 K/BB ratio in 118 innings over past two years, fastball at 94-96, great changeup at 82, pretty decent hook as well
RHP #23 Nick Christensen, 24 - failed starter, but posted otherworldly 1.13 ERA last year as a reliever, combines 98 MPH fastball with 88 MPH slider

C #60 Gabe Roberson, 28 (R/R) - big arm and data say he's one of the best at framing pitches, hit tool getting better
C #51 Bryan Lamb, 36, (S/R), - Lamb showed an extraordinarily developed eye for the strike zone in his career, not much power, but good defender with decent arm
C #18 Chris Floyd, 25, (R/R), - great bat for a catcher but still struggles with taking walks and avoiding strikeouts; good arm behind the plate but not very mobile, game-calling skills better now

1B #21 Anthony Brooks, 31, (R/R), - can really pick it at first, a real leader who will hit for average and moderate power, don't be surprised if he steals a few either
3B #26 Ken Morton, 31, (R/R), - good range with great arm, dead pull hitter with power
SS #25 Tyler McKenzie, 32, (L/R), - McKenzie is a former top prospect who has bloomed into a strong defender and solid left-handed bat,
2B #6 John Carr, 27, (R/R) - this guy is a human highlight reel, with amazing ball flips, over-the-shoulder catches, diving stops, and sweet double plays, can take a walk and hit some doubles, moderate speed as well, hitting for average has improved to get him this spot
CI #50 Seth Armstrong, 28, (R/R), - Armstrong has light-tower power and a strong arm, limited mobility not a problem subbing at 1B
MI #11 Brendan Wood, 27, (R/R) - hit tool is good, with both moderate power and good average, takes his fair share of walks as well, defense has really improved

OF #24 Ty Oliver, 31, (R/R) - Oliver is a freak of an athlete who has refined his game, massive power and speed with an amazing arm
OF #35 Michael Holt, 27, (R/R) - only below-average tool is arm strength; has above-average speed and power; walks well and has cut down on strikeouts; defense has gotten a lot better
OF #27 Chris Underwood, 30, (S/R) - Underwood's hit tool is still developing, but speed, defense, and arm are all top-notch
OF #29 Moses Deng, 24, (S/R) - speed is 80 on the 20-80 scale, arm is above-average, hit tool is average, fielding is above-average, power will never be more than average, if that; can play any outfield position; South Sudanese refugee who has only been playing baseball since 15
OF #40 Chris Townsend, 26, (L/L) - defense is above-average with average arm; speed is a tick above average; a player who can play any outfield position; he can hit for average, defend, and take a walk, massive leap forward to get this job

Aubrey Bell #1 (Hitting Coach)

Greg Richardson #47 (Pitching Coach)

To Come Roaring Back: The Return of the Feral Felines Baseball Team

Catstantinople - Nary a year has passed, yet already the best of the best baseball players of the Empire of Cats have donned their emerald green, royal blue, and golden yellow uniforms to prepare to face off against some of the world's best in the fortieth WBC to date. Last year, the Felines made their first-ever WBC debut, finishing with a respectable record of 15 games won to 15 games lost. They failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Following their return last year, the team returned to their national teams and privately vowed to do better come the next time. And now next time has rolled around. Can the Felines manage to ride the turbulent waves of international baseball to their first-ever postseason appearance in the WBC? Or will they be heading home early again? Only time will tell.

As the days before the opening pitch count down, the team is beginning their warmups and practicing their game. Nerves and excitement are running high. But will that be enough to carry them? Perhaps. That, and certainly some darn good baseball playing.

MEET THE TEAM

Background: Catstantinople has two professional baseball teams, the Kaisers (the oldest remaining professional franchise in Empire of Catsian history, founded in 1898), and the Catstantinople Leopards, an expansion team added in 1954. They have a ferocious inter-city rivalry that has no equal in any other sports rivalry in the country. This will test the limits of those players' tolerance for each other on this team.

The Rorington Pioneers, Tarrytown Mustangs, and Carlton Kings are all part of the EOC League. The Foresttown Tapirs, St. Kitts Lightningbolts, and Mountainsburg Rams are all part of the Imperial League. The final few teams, the South Georgetown Avalanche and Golden Beach Sharks are a part of the Catsian League, along with the Davidston Golden Lions and Little Island Privateers.

The Kaisers are the winningest franchise, with twenty-three championships, followed by the Leopards with eighteen, the Golden Lions with seventeen, the Rams with ten, the Lightningbolts with five, and the Mustangs with two. The Sharks, Pioneers, Tapirs, and Privateers have never won a championship, and the Pioneers have never even made it to a championship. The league has been in operation since 1945.

TIGERS ROUNDTABLE: WBC40 PREDICTIONS

It's that time of year again, as fans from across the world get ready for the fortieth World Baseball Classic. Which sixteen teams will be able to make the trip to Cassadaigua, and who will be World Champions? Today, we've gathered three baseball experts to analyze each group and predict how the group stage of the Classic will turn out.

Our panelists:
Megan Peterson, a former Tigers center-fielder and Ruby Falls Thunder star.
Alex Cameron, former Tigers third-baseman and manager, and current manager of Hicaña.
Erik Lundqvist, Arondic starting pitcher and ace of the New Llama Wizards
***
Group 1
Bongo Johnson (UR)
-Anthor- (18)
West Phoencia (8)
Somersville (UR)
Equestrian States (UR)
Scootalove City (21)

Peterson: The name everyone’s going to talk about is Equestrian States, former baseballing superpowers. And, although they’ve been through a slump lately, I think they can come back. Still, West Phoenicia did just make the semifinals, so they’re absolutely the favorites for this group. I’ll take 1. West Phoenicia, 2. Equestrian States, although the other ranked teams should put up a fight.

Cameron: Absolutely agreed about West Phoenicia. They looked really good during their playoff run last season - they even beat the Tigers - and anything but first place will be a major disappointment. However, I think Equestrian States are past it - and -Anthor- is in a good position to capitalize on this group’s lack of a strong second seed. 1. West Phoenicia, 2. -Anthor- for me.

Lundqvist: -Anthor- looked very impressive last Classic, and I think they have a shot at advancing. I also like Equestrian States, but I’m not as bullish on West Phoenicia as you two are. They’ll probably advance, but they’ve only really been around for one Classic. I think the other teams will find a way to adjust. This will be a three-way race for the top. 1. -Anthor-, 2. West Phoenicia

Group 2:
Vermont of America (36)
Nova Anglicana (2)
Fauxia (UR)
United States of Devonta (19)
Cassadaigua (23)
Mampris (UR)

Peterson: This will be a rough group for exactly four of these teams. Nova Anglicana is one of the best teams in the world, and they’ll be looking to challenge for the title this Classic. Behind them, Cassadaigua has a ton of history and the talent to match it. Failure to advance would be a massive setback for both teams. 1. Nova Anglicana, 2. Cassadaigua

Cameron: I’ve always liked the United States of Devonta, but Megan’s right - they’re in a very difficult group, with Cassadaigua basically the second seed. I think they’ll make some noise, and the group will be pretty close, but it’s hard to see anyone but the Anglicans and the Dagans coming out of this group alive. 1. Nova Anglicana, 2. Cassadaigua

Lundqvist: Absolutely agreed with you two, any other team advancing would be huge. But I think Cassadaigua, ready to host the Classic, will do very well. We all know that Nova Anglicana has a history of underperforming in the group stage, are they really over that yet? 1. Cassadaigua, 2. Nova Anglicana for me.

Group 3:
The Lone Star Union (UR)
West Saintland (11)
Siroy (UR)
Ko-oren (26)
Frenline Delpha (5)
Nagore (55)

Peterson: A pretty strong group. Frenline Delpha should advance easily, although a rejuvenated West Saintland should give them a run for the money. I like Ko-oren as a team, but I’m not sure if they’ll be able to find a way out of this group. No offense to any of the other teams, but I don’t think they’re ready to be a major factor yet. 1. Frenline Delpha, 2. West Saintland

Cameron: I like Ko-oren a lot; they used to be a major player on the WBC scene and I think they still have some of that ability left. I think they’ll turn some heads this Classic and snag a playoff spot. West Saintland and Frenline Delpha are both very strong teams, but I think it’ll be the Sanctii missing out on the last day of the season. 1. Frenline Delpha, 2. Ko-oren

Lundqvist: I think West Saintland are going to go far this tournament; I really like how they’ve constructed their roster. Behind them, I definitely think it’ll be close, but Frenline Delpha should get past Ko-oren and the other three teams. 1. West Saintland, 2. Frenline Delpha

Group 4:
Drawkland (14)
Schiltzberg (1)
Ovskovyk (UR)
Free Republics (22)
New Danican (UR)
Cheongji (78)

Peterson: Schiltzberg are definitely going to win this group. As for second place, I’m going to go with Drawkland, who have looked fairly impressive so far. Free Republics might challenge for a playoff spot, but this group will only be a battle for second. 1. Schiltzberg, 2. Drawkland

Cameron: Absolutely agreed that Schlitzberg will go first. I’m not as sure about who else will advance - it seems as if it could be very close. I think this group will come down to experience and keeping focused against the smaller teams, and Free Republics will barely edge out Drawkland. 1. Schiltzberg, 2. Free Republics

Lundqvist: Schiltzberg haven’t won a Classic in a while, so they’ll be coming out of the gates with something to prove. With their talent, I don’t think the other five teams stand a chance. But Drawkland should be able to beat Free Republics to the second playoff spot. 1. Schiltzberg, 2. Drawkland

Group 5:
Newmanistan (10)
Karamiko (UR)
Sandberg (24)
Gim (UR)
Zwangzug (35)
Union of Socialist Alpine Republics (6)

Peterson: USAR are a very good team, but Newmanistan might be the real first seed in this group. The two teams should be able to lock down first and second fairly quickly, but the battle for first in the group will go down to the wire. I think it’ll be 1. Newmanistan, 2. USAR

Cameron: I think everyone’s underrating USAR. They haven’t made any deep playoff runs, but they’ve been consistently solid in the group stage. Newmanistan is a very good team, but I’ll think they’ll be able to handle the Rockets. 1. USAR, 2. Newmanistan

Lundqvist: USAR and Newmanistan are good, sure, but we can’t forget Zwangzug. They haven’t been as good as they used to be, but they can still make some noise this Classic. I think they’ll beat USAR out to the second spot. 1. Newmanistan, 2. Zwangzug

Group 6:
Darmen (31)
Mount Pleasant (45)
Tainese (UR)
Novostela (UR)
Gregoryisgodistan (7)
Maklohi Vai (13)

Peterson: Two very good teams at the top, and despite Darmen’s best efforts, I think Gregoryisgodistan and Maklohi Vai will be the ones making it out of this group. In terms of ordering, I think Maklohi Vai is overdue for a deep playoff run. 1. Maklohi Vai, 2. Gregoryisgodistan

Cameron: Definitely agreed with Megan. Maklohi Vai and Gregoryisgodistan are both very strong teams who always have the potential to go deep. Agreed with the ordering too, the Bat Slaves haven’t looked great the last few Classics. 1. Maklohi Vai, 2. Gregoryisgodistan

Lundqvist: I think you guys are underrating Darmen. They have a lot of history and they’re still a very good team. They should be able to find a second-place finish. 1. Gregoryisgodistan, 2. Darmen

Group 7:
Cosumar (20)
Empire Of Cats (32)
Hothnia (UR)
Super-Llamaland (4)
Abanhfleft (17)
Lisander (UR)

Peterson: Oh hey, it’s us! I think the Tigers will win this group easily - there’s just nobody who stacks up to them. In terms of second place, I’m going to take the dark horse, Empire of Cats. They had a promising first classic in a similar group, and I think they really could make the playoffs. 1. Super-Llamaland, 2. Empire of Cats

Cameron: The Tigers have been getting complacent, and winning their group isn’t even a guarantee. I think they’ll find a way to advance in first place, though, with an improved Abanhfleft team finishing second. 1. Super-Llamaland, 2. Abanhfleft

Lundqvist: I don’t think the Tigers will have any problems with this group, which is actually very similar to their WBC39 group. Abanhfleft are perennial underperformers, and I don’t think Empire of Cats are ready yet, so I’ll take a solid-as-ever Cosumar team for second - they really got robbed out of a playoff spot last time, and with a weaker second seed, I think they can capitalize. 1. Super-Llamaland, 2. Cosumar.

Group 8:
Hicanans In Exile (25)
Ethane (3)
Tenburg (UR)
South Yerfilag (15)
Elgenstad (32)
The land of Land (UR)

Peterson: Ethane will be undisputed group champions. But there should be a huge battle for second. South Yerfilag and Hicanans in Exile are good, but neither team is a consistent playoff qualifier. Elgenstad is solid and could surprise, while Tenburg looks promising. Still, I think it’ll be South Yerfilag - the former world #2! - behind Ethane. 1. Ethane, 2. South Yerfilag.

Cameron: I’m obviously biased, but the Phoenixes are very promising. I think they’ll finish second, with Ethane in first. 1. Ethane, 2. Hicanans in Exile.

Lundqvist: I think Tenburg will actually make a run for second place, but they aren’t ready yet. I totally agree with Megan, it’s about time South Yerfilag made their comeback. 1. Ethane, 2. South Yerfilag

DRAWKLAND NATIONAL BASEBALL TEAM
featuring the Elite Eleven (EXI)

Name: Base Corps
Colors: Black with Red trim
Demonym: Drawkian
Physiology: Special
6TH World Baseball Classic, Rank #14
Stadium: Hydrogen Cyanide Field, Drawk City
Capacity: 50,000
Image
Manager: Nobody? Who the hell are these guys?
Uniforms: Home, Away (EXI)

The Base Corps' home field has been designated as Hydrogen Cyanide Field, a ballpark housing a massive 50,000. It's nestled in the middle of Drawk City, near the Sports Quarter of the city around the Drawkland River. The field is regularly used by the Drawk City Scouts, but in the offseason it's used by the Base Corps and as a stage for events.
Drawk City being Drawkland's most massive, sprawling city of many millions, travel can get congested, but there are lots of options for travelers. For teams, buses can be used, and there are several charter/private bus companies who are welcoming visiting teams. Traveling by airship is the favorable option for those wanting to see a big slice of Drawkian culture, traveling in the city. The lower left corner of the photo seen above is actually a semi-large dock for boats, which teams can travel in if they feel like it.
Getting to the city also heralds several options. Drawk City has a space port for those from non-Sonnelian regions, and an airport for more "local" travels (say if a team went to a space port with cheaper rates and flew into Drawk City by plane). Travel by boat is possible, but it's all river travel, so the source port will have to be from somewhere else on the Drawkland River or on the coastlines.

Drawkland is quite a cultural and tourism-minded nation, so teams and fans will have much fun in the city before and after the games. A notable item is the very widespread usage of music. Not only can music be heard through the streets, but in all sports games, including baseball, pep bands are a common if not a necessary feature of every game. Playing during gameplay is accepted, so visiting teams may have to take this into account. When on the road, however, the Drawkian pep bands following the Base Corps is more polite and will only play between innings. Drum cadences are crowd favorites.

The Elite Eleven are all pretty much "very good" at batting, so they drew straws on what the lineup should be. They all agreed, however, that the designated hitter (Dominic Southers) should lead off, and whoever's pitching should bottom out.

There's only 2 cut-and-dry pitchers on the Elite Eleven, so they just kinda rotate who starts and who closes each game. If one of them just doesn't feel like pitching in a game, the center fielder, Mike Rodney, will fill in just in case it's needed, and Dominic Southers will fill in for Center. This is highly uncommon though, mainly because it makes the lineup more confusing.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my runscorers: Yes.
Choose my lineup: My lineup is as specified above.
Follow my pitching rotation: It's literally 2 guys. Flip a coin.
Godmod scoring events: Yes.
RP injuries to my players: The Elite Eleven cannot be injured.
Godmod injuries to my players: Like, you can try, but they'll be back in a few hours.
Eject my players: Yes, only one per game and a duration of a game.
Godmod other events: As long as it doesn't destroy my nation or my organization, I'm fine with anything.
Use DH at home: Yes.
As far as permissions go, as long as it doesn't totally wreck me, I don't mind, and in fact, you don't even have to TG (unless you're starting some diplomatic drama or something). I like surprises.

After featuring the Elite Eleven in World Baseball Classic 39, the Drawkian International Sporting Council (DISC) decided they did well enough. Well, "well" isn't exactly the word I would use for it. In fact, they were utter garbage. That's not the mediocrity we've come to expect from our Base Corps boys! Unusual winners West Phoencia and old newcomers Cassadaigua smacked the Corps and everyone else in the group silly, so now the Base Corps is basically garbage again. Oh well. I mean, we were bad for 2 seasons, then decent for 2. I guess we're starting over? Damn, why does the uncanny luck never happen to us?

Now you're probably wondering what the hell the Elite Eleven is and why they're a big deal. DISC opted to go with these 11 guys instead of the usual team of PBL All-Stars that competed for 4 classics. Who are they? Well, nobody knows where they came from, besides a select few. But everyone knows them as the travelling athletes who are proficient in nearly everything that has to do with physical activity. And people have started noticing that they just don't seem to age at all. And for some reason, DISC decided they would be a real solid choice to send to WBC 39 and now, 40. Secret weapons program gone wrong? Strange immortals claiming Drawkian citizenship? Figments of our imagination somehow able to compete on the international stage? Spies meaning to infiltrate Drawkland and embarrass in sports, our most self-conscious feature of our nation? Only time will tell. Let's just hope they can not fail like last time.. I mean, they are supposed to be ungodly good at sports.

The foreign 'designated hitter' rule does not exist in Ko-orenite baseball, in which case often a non-starting outfielder will hit.
While colour printing (and colour photography) are staple in many areas in the Multiverse, in Ko-oren we will still have to use good old black and white.
This doesn't do the uniforms justice; those are green with yellow lettering, with a blue trim.

State of the Aluminum: A Pre-Tourney Look at the Team

Cassadaigua - Welcome, fans of baseball, fans of sports, and certainly fans of the Feral Felines team as we examine the scrappy group of baseball players gathered from across the nation to participate in the 40th WBC to represent the nation of the Empire of Cats. Though the tourney itself has yet to commence, the Catstantinople Dispatch has decided to take it upon itself to get a feel for the team, which will be representing our nation in front of teams ranging from newcomers to seasoned, title-laden veterans (here's looking at you, Newmanistan, Schlitzbierg, Super-Llamaland, and Frenline Delpha), and everywhere in between. The 40th WBC will, no doubt, be perhaps one of the most interesting.

The Feral Felines find themselves in a bit of a situation as they continue to practice and warm up for the upcoming tourney: despite their ability to work together on the field, several of their histories are sprinkled with cases where they and another player on the team have had some issues, even brawls on the baseball mound, to the mortification of their teams and the excitement of many fans.Though tensions have simmered down as players have apologized and played alongside one another, there have been concerns that it might boil over again if a situation appears. But it doesn't mean that games are always laced with violence. Take the case of the friendship between Caleb Young of the Carlton Kings and Jacob Mueller of the Catstantinople Leopards. The two catchers, who played for the same teams from high school through college, have always made a habit of congratulating each other after each game and often catch up with each other after games. This friendship has lasted through two championship matchups, with the two playing their best and then leaving the emotion on the field.

Do the Felines have enough of what it takes to make the playoffs? Some experts think so. Megan Peterson, former star center-fielder of the Super-Llamaland Tigers, picks us to finish second, as a bit of a "dark horse" choice. Time will tell if she is right. Overall, however, the analysis is that the Felines have a fairly probable chance of tasting the playoffs this WBC. The pitching has stepped up behind Carl Gustav, Joseph Fritz, and Francis Dodd. David Jones leads the group with a record-setting 14 home runs in the national leagues, with Marcellus Yves following his lead with 8. The defense has tightened up since last year, and among everyone there is one feeling: that this year will be their best yet. -Excerpted from the Catstantinople Dispatch sports page, Edward Graham reporting.

K.C. looked at his players as they all sat in the locker room, game time inching ever closer, having just listened to him give a run through of the gameplan; namely, not to be a hero, get on base, get into a rhythm. "Any questions?"

Silence.

Awkward silence. Everybody was too freaked out by the size of the stage they were about to take, to be frank, but no one wanted to admit it.

"Anybody wanna say anything...?"

"Yea, I guess I do." Jack had a shot of whiskey in his hand, and as the bottle was being passed around among all his teammates, he made his way to where K.C. was standing.

"Alright, so... like the Skip said, get into a rhythm, don't be a hero... but, I will say this. There's been very little word about us, like... most people don't seem to know we're here. Just some odd cigarette stink coming out of a locker room."

This got laughs all around.

"Right, best thing I heard about us so far... what did he say... 'Tenburg might make a run for second spot in the group. Might. He said we're 'not ready yet'. I dunno about you, but the fact that we're here is fuckin' evidence enough that we're ready."

This got some nods and mumbles of agreement.

"Now everything that Skipper said is valid... but, we can play conservative and still be aggressive. Let me put it this way: What usually happens between us, say, when the Lions play the RiverSharks?" Everyone laughed, as the Lions/RiverSharks rivalry has been known to cost players teeth. "Same thing when ye ask, what usually happens between the Blue Jays and the Firebirds, yea?" This rivalry came a close second in number of bench-clearing brawls. "Sense heightened, just a little bit, yea? So let's play like that. Let's play like RiverSharks, and we're staring at the Lions, how's that sound?" The team seemed on board with this.

"Play our game," Michael said, "but play it hard, boys."

"Exactly, I think we can all drink to that."

The team laughed together as they knocked back their shots, now ready to take on the world which seemed to be paying them no heed. But damnit, they would.

They would.
I offer only slanderous mockeries!

Game 1: At South Yerfilag

TOP 4; 1 OUT; 1-0 South Yerfilag

Jack, who had whiffed on a mean breaker in the top of the first, came up to bat once again, digging his front foot into the clay and adjusting his helmet slightly to keep the now setting sun out of his eyes. He watched the pitcher opposite him carefully, waiting for the pitch which would hopefully make him the first Tennsman to get on base in a WBC game.

The windup came, followed by a gust of wind.

“Strike one,” the umpire called.

Jack didn’t argue; he’d lost it in the glare of the sun. He adjusted his helmet again. The second pitch came.

Not only did he see this one, he blew it away.

He dropped the bat like a bag of hammers and sprinted towards first, disregarding where it went, and upon seeing the coach yell at him to head for second, he turned and reached deep down for a burst of speed, sliding in feet first. The ump called him safe, and he stood up, fists raised.

“LET’S GO!” he roared, the small contingent of Tennish fans cheering him on from deep in left field. He turned toward his team dugout, which was causing quite a ruckus. “C’mon in lads, water’s fine!”

Roy O’Sullivan didn’t fare as well, and with two outs against them, Maguire stepped up to the plate.

“Smash that bastard, Mike! Let’s get this rollin’!”

Mike must have heard him loud and clear, because the very first pitch got blasted into the stratosphere. Jack laughed as he left second and began trotting for home.

BOT 9; 0 OUT; 4-3 Tenburg

Jack watched from right field as closer Logan O’Hara and catcher Conor Curren worked out the next pitch. Logan had allowed their first hitter up on for a triple, and was now staring down what would usually be the cleanup hitter. If it was Jack, he would have walked him. But Logan was a fantastic closer for the Lions. He had been on a 34-save streak up to this point in the NBL.

But the streak ended with the deafening crack of a bat, and Jack could only watch as the ball went screaming out of the park, giving South Yerfilag a 5-4 walkoff win.

At that moment, all he could muster was a confused, disheartened “Shit.”

Game 2: Home vs Elgenstad

The area around the 10,000 seat stadium was every bit as wild as a match between Port Pierce FC and PP United. The stadium could only seat 10,000, but there had to be a good 25,000 people on the street and in the parking lots around it, watching from giant projectors. The booze was flowing as if they were already celebrating the championship.

Luckily, The Metros didn’t disappoint them.

BOT 9; 1 OUT; 3-3 TIE

Michael sat down in the dugout, having just been struck out by Oivind Brogger with a monster inside fastball. “Not bad,” he said as he sat down, grabbing a plastic cup of a blue drink and slugging it back like a shot.

Shortstop Dermot Canavan, whom Brogger had popped in the 8th, nodded in agreement. “He’s a mean one. Tough, too. I was sure Jack’s triple there woulda shook him, but nah.”

Dylan Mahoney stepped up to the plate, his helmet famously pulled low over his brow as he readied his bat, his whole body seemingly swaying back and forth. The first pitch came and he cracked it up and away for a foul.

“C’mon, Dylan!” Dermot shouted, about to pull out a match when he remembered how they got yelled at by the staff at the last place for all the smoking. Figuring most stadiums feel that way, he decided against it.

Brogger threw another screamer, but Mahoney managed to get the whole thing, sending it rocketing down the right field line and into the stands.

The whole dugout leapt to its feet at once, screaming like kids at recess as Mahoney ran frantically around the bases, pumping his fists and leaping for joy. They couldn’t hear themselves between the crowd in the stadium and the bigger one beyond it. It seemed the whole earth was rumbling around them as they ran to home plate and dog-piled him as he came in.

Game 3: at Hicanans in Exile

TOP 7; 1 OUT; 4-0 Tenburg

This wasn’t the first time Jack had beer thrown at him while coming up to bat, but it was the most refreshing in a long time. Tenburg was up 4-0 to start the top of the 7th. Their bats had already eaten Gabriel Arroyo and Chad Diaz alive, and now Carlos Feliz was on the mound for the home team. Additionally, Dermot had made his way to first.

Now, Jack was more of an RBI hitter than a slugger, hence why he was second on the order as opposed to fourth or fifth, but when Feliz sent a 90-mph fastball to the outside, Jack knew he had to take a swing at it, for shits and giggles if nothing else. As the bat connected, he experienced a feeling that was new to him.

Namely, he knew the ball was gone the moment he hit it.

He tossed the bat aside emphatically and began his jog as the boos—and some more booze—rained down from the stands, high-fiving the base coaches as he went. Coming back around to home, and then to the dugout, he proclaimed:

“You guys should try the beer!”

BOT 9; 2 OUT; 6-0 Tenburg

Most of the crowd had cleared out by this point, which was fine, because it was unlikely they wanted to see the deadly efficiency of Logan O’Hara. Already he had burned two batters on three pitches apiece, all strikes. This was O’Hara at his finest; completely merciless.

Sebastian Guzman looked in a curveball for the seventh-straight strike. Logan smirked as he got whistles from his dugout. He knew they were just messing with him. Conor gave him a signal, which he considered for a moment, shrugged, and nodded with approval. He set in his stance, wound up and threw a 4-seamer to the inside at 99 mph. Another strike.

One more.

Conor gave him the signal, and he nodded without hesitation, setting his fingers for one of those screaming curveballs he learned from James Cullen. He fired it downward, watching as Guzman swung early to end the game right there. “Yes!” He pumped his fist as Conor jogged over and fist-bumped him.

“Christ, ye looked scary today,” he said.

Logan nodded to the scoreboard. “We all did, Conor.”
I offer only slanderous mockeries!

Ready...Set...Go......

The World Baseball Classic #40 has officially started as 48 teams go up against each other in the ultimate tournament of baseball greatness.

The Confederates took on unranked team Somersville in the first match. And like with all unranked teams there was an aura of mystery around the team. How in synch is the team? Who were the more skilled pitchers? Which fielders was the best to hit towards to ensure to achieve the most bases?

The Confederates lost 2-4 on there first match. A shaky start with Somersville gaining a lead due to new West Phoenician pitcher Jordan Pike, the Somersville team took full control in showing the Confederates Jordan Pike would take a long time before he reached the caliber of El Susana who had decided to return to the Baseball on a national standard instead of representing the international team.

Match Day 2

The Confederates had the edge during game 2 when they came up against Equestrian States winning 8-3 on home soil surrounded by 3/4 of the stadium which were cheering Confederate fans.

Match Day 3 saw the Confederates take on Bongo Johnson beating them 5-1. Pitchers Cooper Force and Cliffe Samuels were the stars of the team today practical forbidding any Bongo Johnson player from leaving the plate and for those that did they were quickly taken out by first baseman Nate Texas.

The West Phoenician Confederates next take on;

-Anthor-  on homsoil for match day 4 Baseball is the second sport that West Phoenicia interacts with, with this nation after crossing paths in the Archery tournament.
They will play their first away game against Scootalove City in match day 5.
And for match day 6 Somersville will travel to West Phoenicia to play the Confederates on their home turf.

Group 1 is definitely a grouping to keep the fans watching with such a mix bag of talent, history and determination from all 6 teams.
