Shake Hands with the Devil
The Moukeri Genocide Crisis
The Moukeri Genocide Crisis
As you may have guessed from the title, this Roleplay will be concerning a genocide on the isles of Moukere. The Moukere isles are home to around fifty distinct ethnic groups, most from the Bantu, Mandé, Guinean and Nilotic families. Tensions between the groups have always been less than peaceful, but current events have begun to snowball into a situation that may rend the young nation apart.
The problems became apparent in late 2014, when Huyti rebels began protesting what they saw as ethnic domination by the Koto as since 1990 the leader of Moukere had been of Koto ethnicity. Blaise Koto, the leader at the time, responded with what is believed to be overwhelming force, hoping to intimidate the Huyti to stop their resistance. Instead, they were convinced that a war was neccesary. Armed conflict broke out in Huyti majority regions, with many accusations of ethnic cleansing against both sides. The conflict got so bad that Blaise Koto requested Bhikkustani military intervention and handed away sovereignty of the isles. At this stage there was only knowledge of crimes by the Huyti, so the Bhikkustanis felt morally right. As revelations if the government's crimes surfaced, anger began to brew. Bhikkustan regranted Moukere sovereignty recently, and elections were held. There were many accusations that the eventual winner Pierre Khalfani, a Koto, cheated in the race but overall most of the nation were happy with the result. Khalfani's campaign had centred on land reform, which appealed to the people greatly. But these reforms were not what had been expected. Instead of reforms that benefited the poor, the reforms took Huyti, Twika and Zonge land and distributed it to the Koto. Protests began, which were swiftly suppressed.
