True North Twenty20

Cricket is not one of the most popular sports in Quebec, though at times it's drawn huge crowds in attendance- that being on either domestic or international competitions when they'd be paid some attention. Though it is not the most popular, nor the most played, people nonetheless know the rules and pay when interested.

With this in light, the Cricket Quebec has decided to create a new T20 league, after years of state level competitions which kept the national exposure mostly limited. With the parity of teams on the league, it was a very interesting one to say the least as the Yugong-Sussex, a club consisting of mostly northern Gaspecian players and university graduates (UdG and Hampden with some of the best collegiate programs for last decade or so), won the trophy over Amos. This was then followed by favourites Amos and Middlesex, whose backings and massive fanbase had them placed as so from beginning. Also the surprisers were Kingston Tigers, a team from the area that's barely a cricket market but was able to take advantage of its highly-trained Tamil players, and an aging Sherbrooke Raiders squad. The likewise were not said for Dongnae, however, as the Nova Scotians have failed to deliver on games that mattered- most notably on round 18 against Sherbrooke and 21 against Alma- and were given the season record of 9-13.

Yugong-Sussex may've had the most surprising story, but it was the more experienced Middlesex squad who prevailed as they pulled through with a spectacular last run from Franklin Rivard-Jones, who overcame a leg injury from car accident just 6 months earlier to lead the squad to victory, in front of a sellout crowd at 8,000-seater Sussex Cricket Ground, Yugong City, Gaspecie.

Procedural Notes:

Royal Kingdom of Quebec's (QUE) entries were not adjudged as late entries, due to oversight on the CLT20's part in not confirming the deadline 72 hours in advance.
Because eight (8) or more teams (twelve [12], to be exact) were entered, the tournament will be split into equal groups, one consisting of the domestic tournament champions and the other the runners-up. The top two (2) teams from each group will then advance.
Additionally, the playoff format is as follows: The winner of the champions' group will play the runner-up of the non-champions' group, and the winner of the non-champions' group will play the runner-up of the champions' group. The winners of these matches will proceed to the final, with the winner of that match declared champion.

Normally, one would consider odd for a sports team to play at the house of their owner. It would be odd, except it's Sunrisian cricket, who have given so little care about the whole sport that most of their rosters are from unnamed nobodies that probably couldn't cut at their homeland being paid next-to-nothing as a result.

Still, the house in particular does belong to Matthewsianian playboy Marcellus Wallace, currently residing at the Cohen Heights' district of Londonpool, so there is some sort of luxury on it. Just don't expect natives showing up.

...I mean, Heart of Londonpool are in town after all.

Final Results

The Newland Sixers will have an chance to defend their world champion title after making it to the top of the Super Slam table. In an incredibly tight race, the top 2 teams had to split by net run rate. In the Semis, the Sixers dispatched Porthaven, almost bowling the team from the capital out in an excellent spell of death bowling by Erin Foster and Cameron McClelland, the fast bowlers ensuring a victory by 16 runs.
However, the other team from the capital, the Haven Slammers, put on a dominating performance against the Scorchers, scoring a massive 194 runs, mostly thanks to recently test-capped Tim Waterman, who smashed a quick-fire 82. Remarkably, it wasn't the Slammers highest score this season, with the team scoring 202 runs in their round 12 fixture against the Knights. They won that match by an incredible 74 runs.

With the two best teams in the country meeting in the final, it was bound to be good. The Slammers got off to a good start early in the match, dispatching the Sixers opening duo of Hopkins and Royles for a total of 6 runs. Dougherty and Polemore built a partnership, but Kaine Nelson had both caught in the deep just as they looked menacing. After that the wickets fell regularly for the Sixers, as Nelson added two more to complete his haul of 4/39. The Sixers completed their 20 overs with 2 wickets in hand and 122 runs on the board.
Waterman and Haven captain Christian Long then stepped up to the crease, and stayed there, putting on a 79-run stand for the first wicket. Long wad the unlucky batsman, stumped after a brilliant piece of bowling by Haven captain Casey Williams. Simon Chancellor came in and kept the scoreboard moving. With victory in sight, Chancellor was bowled by Maitland, but it was too late to save the game, Waterman finishing it off with a boundary in the 18th over.

The NCC is the oldest cricket club in Barunia, and as such Newland has the honour of being the oldest cricket ground in the country. A quick outfield means balls can race away, but the boundaries can be long.
The pitch surface has been prepared to equally favour pace and spin bowlers, and typically provides extra bounce. According to a long standing tradition, any batsmen who can hit the clock on the roof of the member's stand will receive a cash prize*. In the stadium's 75-year history, it's only been done four times.

The next lowest innings was Hahsa Reeyohra's 116 in 20 overs against Evasolara. That Evasolara innings was the third lowest scoring one, at 132. The next two lowest scores were also recorded by Hahsa Reeyohra's opponents!

Hahsa Reeyohra is the obvious champion. The team from sunny Gehrenna lost just one match, versus Evasolara. That one match goes down in the history books for more than one reason, as detailed in the Lowest Innings' section.

The thin air of Heofü Fao Kong's high-lying ground has certainly proved a factor: the team, whose ground sits at 1682 metres above sea level, had the highest number of runs scored in its matches. Of course, that also comes from posting (and allowing teams to post) a high first-innings total.

Rightfully, Hahsa Reeyohra qualifies for the international CLT20. Evasolara joins them, which means visiting teams will have to undertake either an easily reachable municipal stadium in warm Gehrenna, or an airship to Ko-oren, only to board a train to the heartland, where the woods of the Aviansolan people lie. The entire operation takes up to a full day to complete after landing in Ko-oren, and that is only because of the recently completed train line to the edges of the Aviansolan region.

Early favourites to win the competition, Paatukar Eagles, easily finished on top of the table at the end of the regular season, only suffering three away losses and ending up with a massive net run rate of 1.59. The Kites safely made the final four, despite their damaging negative net run rate, as did the Hawks, who were lucky that the Osprey fell to the Harriers in the last match. The Eagles will host the local derby semi-final against the Paatukar Hawks, while the Skaganes Harriers will host the Port Paatukar Kites in the other semi-final.

The Hawks shocked the Eagles in the first semi-final thanks to some tight bowling and fielding, which gave them a low target of 114 to win, that they reached in the 18th over. This gives the Hawks their first win against their cross-town rivals, whom they lost to in their previous two meetings. Meanwhile the Harriers were able to beat the Kites first innings of 149 in the last over, giving them hosting rights for the grand final.

The Harriers set the Hawks a big target of 174 for victory, which proved too big for the visitors, as they were bowled out for just 117. The Skaganes Harriers have now been crowned the inaugural Spaamanian T20 League Champions! The Harriers and the Paatukar Hawks have also earned themselves a place in the CLT20 next year.

Super Slam 4 results

The Super Slam proves its anyone's tournament, with three of the top four ranked outside the top 6 from last edition. Last year's winners, the Haven Slammers, started strongly, but had a horror second half of the season to fall just short of the Top-4. Meanwhile, the Dragons showed no signs of stopping as they stormed through to clinch the league, before seeing off the Fireballs in the semi's to book a date with destiny and the Wranglers. In front of a home crowd, the Dragons roared home, setting a monstrous 151 before blunting the Wranglers' attack with some good bowling at the death.
