Valorem-Meritus Dispatch
The Konigsberg Fusiliers defeated the University of Westshire 24-10, securing their place in the middle of the pack in the Mineral Conference. While the team has been unable to defeat the elite Redvali schools, they have now defeated Frontier State and Westshire twice and Stoltz once, and are traveling to Stoltz again next week.
On to the game summary:
Konigsberg started the game off with an aggressive drive, scoring a touchdown on a long run from RB Cal Gerig after he broke through the Westshire line with just one first down on the drive. Westshire soon answered with a touchdown of their own, although the Konigsberg defense was punishing and made their drive take 8 minutes of the first quarter. However, Westshire was able to get an average of 4 yards per run, and eventually they were able to score. Konigsberg's next drive resulted in a field goal, as the Westshire defense solidified at the 25 yard line and stopped Konigsberg for 3 plays. Westshire was also forced to go for a field goal in the early second quarter, tying the game 10-10, but the Westshire coach did not know that this would be the last time Westshire scored for the entire game.
In the second half, Konigsberg came out of the locker room reinvigorated after a rousing speech by coach Otto Sheinfeld. They immediately drove down the length of the field with a series of shotgun passes for ~15 yards each, scoring a touchdown in about 3 minutes. Westshire's next drive was stopped without a single first down by the newly energetic Fusilier defense, who managed to force a total loss of 12 yards by sacking the quarterback twice in 3 plays. After a terrible punt by Westshire for just 30 yards (due to a rough bounce), WR Heinrich Norbert returned the ball 15 yards to the Westshire 28. From there, Konigsberg had no trouble at all scoring, and did so within 2 minutes. Neither team scored for the entire fourth quarter, as a determined Fusilier defense stalled the Westshire offense at the 40 yard line (followed by a missed FG attempt), while the Fusiliers switched to a non-aggressive style and coasted to a 24-10 victory.
