Can you flesh your idea out a bit more? Where would you want the captions to appear, visually speaking? On hover, as a tool-tip? Directly on the banner itself? Below the banner ... like by the flag or ... where?
It's easy to say "I want this," but ... where would you want to put it? I don't see anywhere that it would flow easily, unless it's a tool-tip, which is unlikely to work for certain browsers/platforms.

Maybe a hover-over, top left or right? The lower part of the image is sort of blocked by the flag and the WA member tag. If hovers are too difficult, maybe it can just appear on the banner itself. The captions would be optional, for anyone who didn't want them.

If it's a lighter/whiter image, it would need to be black. If it's got stripes or color variation, there's no single "good color" that would probably work well, in terms of contrast and look pleasing.
Again: not a techie, but for me, it seems like this would fall under the "nice to have but difficult to effectively/cleanly implement" category.

Great Nepal wrote:I dont think having permanent caption would look good, plus you would need to choose one for every banner. Instead it could be implemented as an alt-text - you hoverover it and it shows a caption much like how when you hover over NationStates logo on top it says "Jennifer Government: NationStates"

Showing the standard description of the banner (i.e. "have an extremely large military" or whatever). Since it's not always apparent what others' banner are for, and it's painful (and potentially not possible) to look them up among your own.
It's not a custom field, but it is a caption, and I'd imagine it's require a lot less effort to make happen (and not create another field requiring moderation )
