GAEL IN THE 1700's - 1800's

Overview

After some discussion in the RMB, I decided to set this RP up to flesh out some of Gael's history in the (late) early modern period. This RP would be a character driven RP with no set goal, which would allow participants to write up a part of their nation's history through the eyes of different characters and there wouldn't have to be a lot of commitment, just type up a post when possible. On this thread, we could discuss any major events or general topics we want to RP in the IC.

This would span 200 hundred years, so we would want to discuss how we might structure the RP. I suggest that we put dates on top of each post and write a single post for each event much like Athara Magarat's Medieval RP. This would allow us flexibility and freedom to write about anything within the timeframe. This is only a suggestion and is changeable.

This is meant to be a flexible and relaxed RP, so please feel free to add new suggestions.

Rules

  • We want a good historical RP here, so I suggest the minimum post size should be two sizeable paragraphs.
  • This is open to other nations, but the main focus is Gael, so please write about an event between your country and a Gael one or a character within a Gael country (please ask about the latter)
  • Please keep your posts within the timeframe. You may make reference to earlier times of course, but we don't want a medieval post, etc.
  • Please agree on things beforehand here, most of this should already be in factbooks, but this is still character driven.
  • Finally, stick to the general rules for RP in TWI.

This is during my "Golden Age" where my military was hired on for many mercenary wars (like the Hessians/Prussians) and mostly succeeded at that, so if you have any wars during that period, I'd like to RP those out.

That would add an interesting dynamic to the various events we might have. Noronica may have use of them as this period was the height of the Noronnican Empire.

Sounds good. The 18th century is one of the things I go over in my (shamefully brief) factbook: a time in which Agadar was almost plunged into civil war, averted when the king agreed to surrender most of his power to democratically elected officials.

That would be interesting to RP, especially to see the meeting and the feelings of the members of said meeting. Other nations might have also tried to take advantage of the turmoil.

Aye, I can definitely see one of Vancouvia's mercenary generals be present at the meeting when the king made his decision, trying to convince him to go to war.

So am I right in assuming this is 1700 to 1900? If that's so then the bulk of Verdonian history happens here and there's a wealth of occurances to be explored. In brief, for me, this covers:

-The exploration of Gael => this could be first contact between my people and others
-The repulsion of Ma'aneboc and Tlanti tribes
-The establishment of Verdon; also signifies the arrival of 'Enlightenment' ideas
-The War of the Stripes (1775-1786): A succession war already involving Keomora and Vanc (I think? I didn't write it down)
-The first Industrial Revolution and the advent of Verdonian Agriculture == Verdon is strong and wealthy
-Culminating in the First Oster War (1893-1895) with Ostehaar and Vancouvia and the first 5 years of occupation, which I've always wanted to RP because of the era, and which sparks Verdonian overseas expansion.

So that's two wars up for grabs. Feel free to use any of that stuff as a backdrop or active situation. If anybody is interested I can provide clarification.

I think it'd be great if we used this OOC as a 'research' area where we can ask questions and provide each other information on what our nations & people are like during certain times so that others may use that to craft their stories.

Yes

That would be a great idea. As this is primarily character-driven, your idea would be perfect for anyone trying to RP characters in another country.

What did this entail?

This sounds interesting, would Noronica join or is this strictly between you three?

This could be interesting for Noronica as Ostehaar broke away before this war from the Noronnican Empire. Could Noronica try to meddle and try to get Ostehaar to lose?

So what do you want to do - a really long RP where we go through the centuries and skip ahead to interesting parts? Spawn multiple RPs for each major event like a war? Do some sort of skipping around where we use flashbacks?

I was thinking doing something like your first suggestion with each post showing a character's point of view for sonething. I'm kinda inclined to run this like the Citizens's thread to allow people to write about their nation from a character's point of view, e.g a Noronnican Overlord discussing new plans for etc. etc. but that could run for a long time, so I'm up to different suggestions.

What did you have in mind?

That's fine, no preference, although I would really like to do some long war posts

That's why I made this to be flexible. We can write random posts for when we want to and we can also plan long event posts. The only problem would be trying to fit things into timeframes.

We could make a specific period before a war to allow small posts and then write a large event, then go back to small. Or we could just put dates on top of each post to help us know what part of history we are talking about.

I'd suggest just doing random events from random times for most of it, then convening here when we want to do a planned event, setting a date, and either keeping the thread on hold until we finish it, or starting a different thread for it. I very much like the idea of a 'tales from the war' event.

Exploration entails Clodio de Terouane's explorations into the Gaelian mainland, and his complete mapping of the coast and nearby islands, he's my nation's Darwin, or Linnaeus. I'll most likely use this as a way to introduce species, ethnicities, and first encounters with nations. He was active before the unification of Verdon and represents the city of Arle.

If your nation would have wanted to influence Verdon during the late 18th century, The War of the Stripes is probably the best way to do it. Two noble houses battle it out for a decade until one receives aid from the Keomoran Empire in trade for a marriage alliance, tipping the scales.

That would be fine with me as well. The First Oster War is generally a very one-sided Verdonian victory between a wealthy, mobilized nation and a fledgeling government. It also starts to elucidate the horrors of warfare at the turn of the century, with the introduction of chemical weapons manufactured by the Vaenguard. Having even more people on my side, especially through subversive means, could make it even more believable.

Oooh, that's cool. I've been looking to RP a 19th century war for some time now.

Anyway, I'll briefly survey my nation during that time, so you'd have some context:
  • 1688 - 1850: Time of the Oster Kingdom, mostly known as Kingdom of Lindastir; a theocratic monarchy; population is generally oppressed
  • 1732 - 1847: Kingdom of Lindastir is a vassal state to Noronica; the kingdom goes through some modernization and industrialization
  • 1851 - 1888: The Oster Wars of Independence; the middle class revolts and nearly 40 years of turmoil, instability, and violence ensue
  • 1889: State of Ostehaar is officially established; first national elections take place 4 years later in 1893
  • 1893 -1895: The Verdodian Invasion, known in Verdon as the First Oster War; Verdon occupies the south-eastern portion of the country for 30 years

Seems like a history project going on here, fellows. Self-proclaimed history lover tags this so that he can read awesome 18th-20th Century history.

And thanks for mentioning me in the Overview, Noronica :)

Hey there,
Are you on The Western Isles map? Since we're an RP region, members should be on the map.

Hey all,

I'm sorry for not being as active as I should have been on here. I've been in Scotland but I am now back.

I think we should start something to stop this dying immediately. Shall I set up an IC?

Is everyone fine with one thread where we can put stories in or shall we create multiple IC's where one is just for random 'citizen' posts while others are for specific historical events?

For certain, we need a character thread. Everyday life stories highlighting events and culture through our citizens' and dignitaries' eyes. We can come back to this thread and plan, ask questions when we need to.

For large-scale stuff, like the things people have mentioned, I'd want a separate thread.
