Sunil Singh Panehal - None
Account Name: Costa Fierro
Occupation: Military officer
Party Position(s):None
Positions in Government:(nominated) Secretary of Defence
Constituency: None
Political Ideology: None
Family: Jasinder Anwal
Background:Sunil Panehal Singh was born in Lahore, Pakistan on August 19, 1953. His father was a career officer with the Pakistani Army and had fought with the British Army in North Africa during the Second World War and with the Pakistani Army during the First Kashmir War in 1947. His mother was a schoolteacher with the local primary school on the primary army base in Lahore. Panehal spent much of his childhood in Lahore until October 1965, following the cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan. His father was killed in the conflict and unable to secure a future in Pakistan, he moved with his mother to Fernão to live with her brother, also a Sikh who had moved to Fernão during the Partition to escape the violence.
Sunil proved to be an excellent and attentive student in school. In addition to his native Punjabi, he also became fluent in Hindi and English and proficient in Portuguese. In light of his father's death and increasing devotion to his religion, Sunil began to embody the qualities of a Sant-Sipāhī, or saint-soldier, expressing interest in becoming initiated as part of the Khalsa at age 18. Against his mothers wishes, he joined the Fernão Army in 1971 and was admitted as an Officer Cadet into the Fernãoan Military Academy in Fortaleza.
He was assigned to the 5th Hussars Regiment operating Centurion main battle tanks in April 1972 before being promoted to Second Lieutenant the following year. He showed exceptional command skills and was well liked by his crew. In June 1975, he was further promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, and participated in the military parade celebrating the final act of political separation from the United Kingdom in 1974.
In 1981, Sunil was promoted again to the rank of Captain, and found himself second in command of the 33rd Tank Battalion. He became the commander of the 33rd Tank Battalion in November 1989, with his further promotion to the rank of Major.
The outbreak of the civil war in 1994 proved to be a boost for Sunil's career. He was still a Major at the start of the war and still commanded the 33rd Tank Battalion, this time operating T-72 tanks. Sunil's service during the civil war would be primarily in the west of the country, actively engaging irregular and regular forces associated with the breakaway Republic of Akhdiria. Initially, the 33rd Battalion was deployed as a reserve unit with the 5th Hussars Regiment, itself deployed as part of the forces assembled to quell the Muslim mutiny in the western states. Although expecting to sit the initial engagement out, Sunil's 33rd Tank Battalion found itself in one of the first major engagements of the war, as it attempted to enter the city of Alcalia in September 1994. The five day battle saw Sunil injured when an RPG penetrated the lower left side of the hull of his tank, leaving him with moderate leg injuries. He took several months to recover but retured to active duty in October 1995.
Sunil returned to his unit two weeks before another important battle in the west, where the 33rd Tank Battalion engaged Arab nationalist tanks in the Battle of Deepak's Farm. Over two hours of on December 1, 1995, T-72 tanks of the 33rd Tank Battalion, supported by Scorpion light tanks of the 41st Reconnaissance Squadron and BMP-1's of the 35th Mechanised Brigade engaged nearly two dozen Arab nationalist tanks and assorted vehicles, as they attempted to ambush government forces. Utilising the superior night vision optics fitted to the T-72's, Sunil's tanks managed to successfully engage and destroy 18 of the 27 Arab nationalist tanks, whilst only losing one completely destroyed T-72 and an additional three tanks suffering damage. Following the action that night, Sunil was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, although not awarded additional decorations as his tank was disabled by enemy fire.
As the civil war progressed and the losses in western Fernão grew, Sunil, along with many officers in the west, grew anxious about the growing inability of the Army to be able to effectively deal with the Arab nationalist forces. Hoping to achieve a decisive victory, a select group of officers planned an offensive for the dry season of 1996.
The 1996 Offensive, labeled Operation Scimitar, was an attempt to lure and destroy a number of Arab nationalist regular units into fighting conventional battles where the superiority of Army units and doctrine would prove decisive. Launched on June 1, the offensive made some quick gains, with several towns captured without much fighting. However, as it progressed, the offensive became bogged down in the terrain. Sunil, now in command of the 33rd Tank Battalion, was tasked with spearheading the offensive on the southern flank of the Army's offensive. By June 5, the 33rd began to run into substantial resistance and losses began to mount. Out of the 58 tanks that had began the campaign, six had been destroyed and another 12 had sustained some damage. On July 12, the 33rd was engaged by the Akhdiri 5th Armoured Regiment, which was equipped with a mixture of Type 59, T-55 and refurbished Centurion main battle tanks. The battle was centered around a small village at a crossroads, with Sunil's battalion entering from the east. As he entered the village, Arab nationalist tanks attacked his battalion from the northern flank as well as from directly in front of Sunil's battalion. Four T-55's were destroyed in quick succession within the first few minutes of tje battle commencing. However, the nationalist attack on the flank quickly caused damage within the battalion, with one tank destroyed on the narrow road leading into the village and another disabled after having its track blown off, leaving six tanks in the village itself. The northern flank of the battalion was covered by a large area of rice paddies with nearly a kilometre separating the edge of the jungle from the road. To Sunil's south, there were more rice paddies but a shorter distance between the road and the jungle of nearly half a kilometre. With six tanks cut off and more seemingly vulnerable, Sunil decided to move his tanks into defensive positions to the north and south, entering into the rice paddies. Although he could better engage some of the nationalist tanks approaching from the north, the nationalists had also deployed anti-tank missiles and recoiless rifles at the edge of the jungle, which wrought havoc on Sunil's tank. After two hours of fighting, 20 T-72 tanks were destroyed and another 18 were damaged or disabled. Sunil's forces had managed to destroy 32 nationalist tanks and damage six more. They retreated into more defensible positions and began to engage the missile teams in the jungle, using up all of their available high explosive rounds. Unable to move further and potentially facing numerically superior enemies, Sunil ordered a withdrawl. Operation Scimitar stalled after two weeks and unable to make any further gains, was called off.
Frustrated, Sunil requested a transfer elsewhere, not wanting to be a part of the failures in the west. He served in an administration and training role in Fortaleza for the remainder of the 1990's before requesting another transfer to another unit, this time the 109th Tank Battalion equipped with modernized T-55 tanks. The 109th was in the center of the country, which was more open, flat and lacked the kind of dense jungle the west had. Despite having served in several battles which were defeats, the Army needed experienced commanders and Sunil took command of the 109th in April 2000. The following June, he was again in battle during Operation Bijalee, which was the first successful Army offensive against any irregular militia. Fought over the entire month of June, Operation Bijalee was orchestrated against Hindu irregular forces operating in central regions of Fernão. The terrain was better suited to tank warfare and despite fighting an enemy largely equipped with pickups and lighter vehicles, managed to acquit himself well. He became fond of night attacks where he would use his tanks to surround enemy encampments and use night vision optics to destroy enemy vehicles and positions with high explosive ammunition. Sunil finished Operation Bijalee with 35 credited vehicle kills to his name, including six armoured personnel carriers. He was promoted of Colonel and awarded the Military Merit Medal for his actions.
Sunil continued to participate in military engagements and planningm despite now being in command of the 17th Hussars Regiment. It was during his command of the 17th that he would earn the highest military valour medal in the Fernãoan Armed Forces in a surprising way. On October 28, 2005, the 17th Hussars Regiment was stationed in the town of Mahaankhet in central Fernão for rest and refitting after engaging in a small sweeping operation for Hindu insurgents. Several Hindu fighters infiltrated the camp and set charges to the ammunition storage, setting off substantial explosions. Sunil was not caught in the initial blasts as he was around two kilometres away from where ammunition was stowed. He ran in the direction of the explosions and helped evacuate wounded soldiers from close to the blast site, and ordered an evacuation of the town. He rescued five soldiers during the blasts and was awarded the Gold Medal of Valour for his actions. He was also given a promotion to Brigadier.
Sunil returned to Fortaleza, seeking the relative safety of the capital, where he used his field experience to help plan several smaller operations between 2005 and 2010. In 2011, he helped plan Operation Gaaj, the first major offensive against the Republic of Akhdiria in nearly 20 years. Gaaj succeeded in driving out the Arab nationalist forces from the Fernãoan mainland. Sunil also helped orchestrate the smaller island hopping campaigns that began to isolate the Arab nationalists. In 2014, with the assistance of the UN and Indian forces, Sunil helped plan Operation Badala, which finally ended the conflict and secured peace. He was subsequently promoted to General, having shown excellence and diligence in planning several offensive operations. Sunil was also awarded the Distinguished War Medal.
In March 2017, Sunil was selected to become the Secretary of Defence of the Republic of Fernão.
