Point of Divergence: The Battle of Antietam, 1862
History:

The issue of the institution of Slavery had divided the United States since the rise of the Abolition Movement. Tensions between Northern Abolitionists and Southern Slaveowners, whose agrarian society was dependent on the cheap labor slavery provided, inevitably exploded. A coalition of Southern states seceded from the Union after the election of Abraham Lincoln and formed the Confederate States of America. This new nation did go far before Confederate forces opened fire on Fort Sumter in South Carolina, sparking the American Civil War. The conflict rose in intensity until the Battle of Antietam in 1862. One of the bloodiest battles of the war, it appeared initially that a Union victory was inevitable. However, a night attack conducted by Confederate forces disrupted the Union's foothold in the area, routing a significant portion of the army and leading to the capture of it's commander, George McClellan.

The defeat at Antietam led to a renewed Northern offensive into Confederate territory. Union commanders, unprepared for an entrenched Confederate army, were repelled on nearly every front, with more than 150,000 casualties on both sides over the course of the offensive. The immense bloodshed of these subsequent battles shifted public opinion within both the United States and the Confederate States towards peace. On December 13th, 1863, Confederate and Union diplomats met to discuss negotiations. A deal was reached after more than a week of negotiations; the Confederacy would remain independent of the United States.

Over the next four years, the Confederacy began a process of industrialization to catch up with the Northern Union. The "peculiar" institution of slavery had been preserved and would continue to remain a staple of the Confederate economy. Due to this, however, Pro-Abolition movements like the Underground Railroad began to conduct rebel movements throughout the CSA. Terror attacks became as common as slave revolts and would claim the life of the CSA's first president, Jefferson Davis, in 1864. He was succeeded by Robert E. Lee, who would oversee widespread reforms to the Confederate army and the early beginnings of the nation's navy. Lee would not live to see the fruits of his work and died in 1867 from a heart attack, just after the conclusion of his term of office.

Alan Deckard was elected in late 1868 as the third president of the Confederacy, running on a platform of support from the South's aristocratic plantation owners. He faced considerable opposition from both the Abolitionist Party and the Populist Party, both of whom hated his refusal to pass meaningful reforms for workers' and slaves' rights. His administration would be shaken by the 1869 Border Disputes with the Union, with minor skirmishes over the unincorporated Western territories. Confederate forces were ordered to retreat, humiliating the military and Deckard's administration. This humiliation gave the Underground Railroad new lease, and a string of well-coordinated slave revolts and terror attacks rocked the nation. In response to this, the Confederate government began secretly funding and cooperating with local militias and White supremacist groups to try and counter the new wave of insurgency. Groups like the White League already had significant support among wealthy slave-owners, but now were even more powerful than before. Their intimidation tactics spooked support from the Abolition and Populist movements, who themselves began working with their own similar groups to counter the aggression.

Even in 1870, the Confederacy remains a throughly divided nation. Despite a considerable working class and black population, power is held solely in the hands of white aristocratic plantation owners. Despite their imitation of the Union's system and their almost identical Bill of Rights, the Confederate government and political scene is dysfunctional at best.

Culture:

The culture of the South is not that dissimilar to that of the Union's. Slavery and the concepts of White superiority have considerable sway over the nation, particularly in the sciences of phrenology and other movements. Much of the nation remains agrarian, with a newborn industry concentrated in cities where the standard of living is considerably lower. The culture remains distinctly Southern throughout the CSA, however, in contrast to the more stoic north.

History: (Two Paragraphs Minimum) In 1729 Sultan Ahmed III realized the empire was under strain and that if they kept up the idea of Turkish superiority that soon the Empire might not last for much longer he begged for future leaders to keep careful and not spark the powderkeg that was the Balkans. This made him look weak and the growing coup launched a few years later. Mustafa IV took power and kept the policy of oppressing rebels and killing those who did not accept rule of the Turks. This policy helped spead what became known as "Ahemedism" or the idea of a benevolent Ottoman Empire. The Idea really caught on with a Albanian named Gjergj İskender. He was a influential Albanian who really helped spread the idea until his death in 1811. While the idea had achieved some Turkish support, it did not truly grow until the Tanzimat Reforms were passed. It brought Ahemedism to relevance. Once Abdülaziz I he had a harsh stance on the Tanzimat Reforms and started repealing them. That was a fatal error for him. He was soon replaced by a relative nobody named Suleiman. Suleiman was a local leader of some far off Anatolian city that became important because he had become friends with those rebels that would overthrow Abdülaziz. Once Abdülaziz was gone it seemed like Suleiman would be a perfect replacement to which he was given the title of Sultan in 1869.
Culture: The Culture of The New Ottoman Empire is relatively the same as in our timeline, but with more diversity from Balkan Nations and minor changes in language from efforts to integrate Balkan Languages and ideas. Religion is still divided but the divide is less harsh than in our timeline.

History: It was the year 1781, when the future king, Kamehameha, would start his conquest of the islands. After many battles, with Western technology, he took his place as the ruler of the Hawaiian Isles. In 1819, the king died, and his son Liholiho(or King Kamehameha II) took the throne. After he died from smallpox in England, one of his other relative to the title of Kam III, until the final king in the dynasty, Kam V, died.

After Kam V death, Emma Kalanikaumakaʻamano Kaleleonālani Naʻea Rooke won the election against Kawika Kalakaua. She is the current ruler of Hawaii, and while Hawaii may not be an industrious nation, it is still rich as f*ck.

History: Prime Minister Bettino Ricasoli is overthrown in January of 1862 by Giuseppe Garibaldi,who declares himself the Dictator of the Sicilian and Naples Union. His administration is soon overthrown by a massive catholic army in mid August at the battle of Aspromonte,where Pope Pius IX declares the Holy Roman Empire of the Papal Confederacy. This religious theocracy lasts between 1863 until 1869 when an economic panic sends millions out of work, and sparks several socialist revolutionaries to take power known as the coup of July. These members form the Revolutionary Grand Council of 15 members,where they rule the nation with an iron fist outside of the cities of Naples and Rome. The Revolutionary council soon grows hugely powerful under the head of Luigi Pelloux,who then overthrows the government in mid December of 1869 before being ousted by several mafian members who form the Italian Mafian Republic under Vito Scalleta.

Culture: The many Italian ethnicities such as the migrating french or various small percentages of arabic peoples usually have a tense relationship because of the relligous differences between the several sides. History: As the War of Spanish Succession raged on it became increasingly unpopular with the joint kingdoms. In 1705 the Scottish parliament voted to repeal the Acts of Security. In 1707 the Scottish parliament struck down an act to unite the Scottish and English kingdoms, and enacted the Acts of the Defence (Basically the Acts of security, this cycle would continue for several years). In 1713 Queen Anne dies and both England and Scotland elect different King than England or Queen in this case Queen Emily . This would lead the Kingdom's into further separation, but mutual cooperation. In 1765, Scotland abstained from entering into war on the side of England and simply sat on the sidelines. Scotland's royal lineage would last another generation after the Death of King James who bore no legitimate heirs. 1795 King Alexander takes power, an illegitimate son of King James. In 1800 the Scottish and Irish parliament voted to become a union, this succeeded, even though there was only moderate support for it in the Irish parliament. Scottish parliament then voted and renamed the country the the Scots-Irish Constitutional Republic, this passed as the new parliament was simply a combination of both the Irish and Scottish parliaments. During the war of 1812 Scotland was roped into assisting England by an alliance for mutual they had made during the Napoleonic wars. After the war of 1812 the Scots-Irish Parliament quickly nullified the the military alliance in hopes of not getting roped into another foreign war by the English. In 1815 the Scots-Irish government was quick to sign another military alliance with England upon hearing of Napoleon's return to power. Throughout the rest of the 1800 the Scots-Irish parliament and its subsequent kings and queens would not be great, or very noted, more often than not achieving nothing more than the status quo. It would assist the English on military ventures when requested but would more often than not sit back, the country enjoying being mostly at peace with itself and other nations. It would only find itself in another war during the the Rebellions of 1837 (Patriote rebellion), fighting alongside the british in assistance to put down the rebellion in Canada. After that it would fight on and off against England's enemies in its wars. From 1845-1860 the English government would begin to wear thin the Scots-Irish government's patience thin, the British parliament's constant push to bring Scotland and Ireland into a United Kingdom with England. By 1860 the Scots-Irish parliament would have gotten sick of the countless proposals and deals from England and simply nullified all military alliances with England. In 1864 several members of the Scots-Irish government joined the 1st international, those that joined would have tended to spread the ideas of the international in Scotland. Some of these ideas would take root in the working class and would result in better, but not necessarily good, labour rights for the workers, rights would improve over time but at a slow and steady pace. Women would also gain voting right in 1867 and would be allowed to join in the reserve military. During the the latter part of the 19th century the Scots-Irish Constitutional Republic would become more democratic, its kings and queens slowly losing power, by 1870 they would have simply become national icons, and more power being being shifted to the parliament. The Prime Minister would become the head of the executive government by the end of 1869.
