Manners and etiquette in YN

Postby Estado Novo Portugues » Thu Mar 02, 2017 2:28 pm

Lisboa 9. 6. 2018

Dear nations,

it is often said that "manners maketh man" – chivalry is what sets humans apart from other animals. All civilisations have laws to prevent society from breaking down, but they can't possibly cover every potential scenario. So cultures also have unwritten codes for interactions between their members. Just like traffic rules are necessary to keep a smooth flow, manners and etiquette are a must unless you want a dog-eat-dog world. Or more like "man-eat-man".

How much do manners and etiquette matter in your nation? Are politeness and social protocol held sacred, or do your people not care? Somewhere in between?

By responding to this open survey, you will contribute to humanity by parting the clouds of ignorance and uniting the world's flock under the light of our Creator. Please feel free to deviate from the format of the questionnaire if there are additional peculiarities from your nation's culture, that you feel are important to be aware of.

May peace be upon you,

Afonso Salazar
Prime Minister of the Ecclesiastical State

Basics

Is your nation considered "socially conservative"? Yes, the Ecclesiastical State is a strict Catholic society that lives by the Holy Bible.
Which of these behaviours are acceptable in public?
([o] for acceptable, [x] for unacceptable)

[x] Burping
[x] Displays of affection
[x] Dressing provocatively
[o] Eating
[x] Intoxication
[x] Passing gas
[x] Ranting about personal issues
[x] Smoking
[x] Swearing
[x] Taking photos of other people
[x] Wearing beach attire
[x] Wearing sport attire

Interactions

How do people say "hello" and "goodbye"? «Bom dia» is used when people meet, and «adeus» is used when people part. There are other, more intimate greetings but they are never appropriate for foreigners to use.
What do people usually do when greeting each other? We kiss on the cheeks 2 to 5 times.
Is it expected to greet the owner when entering and leaving a store? Yes. It is very disrespectful if you don't.
Is it expected to greet the driver when boarding and leaving a bus? Yes. It is very disrespectful if you don't.
Are titles (Mr/Mrs/Miss) used? Titles are very important, especially with revered members of society like professors and doctors. Unless someone tells you their preference, always use the title + family name. Using first name without being invited is very disrespectful.
Senhor (Mr): men
Senhora (Mrs): older/married women
Senhorita (Miss): younger/unmarried women
Does the national language have familiar and polite forms of "you"? Yes, they are «tu» (familiar) and «você» (polite). «Tu» is only used for God, family, friends, children and animals – for everyone else it's expected to use «você». You can even be fined if you use «tu» with a policeman or church official, because respect for authority is extremely important here.

Table manners

Are good table manners considered important in your nation? Yes. Nothing is more important than being civilised and cultured.
How are utensils supposed to be used? The order of utensils used is outside to inside. The fork and knife never change hands.
When is it acceptable to begin eating? Only after everyone is served their food and the host says «Bom proveito!» (bon appetit).
(At restaurants) Who pays for the meal? If it is a couple, the man always pays. For business lunches, the boss or most senior person usually pays.
How much is the tip/service charge? All Portuguese restaurants include the service charge in the bill. Usually it is 5 to 10 %.
Which of these behaviours are acceptable during meals?
([o] for acceptable, [x] for unacceptable)

[x] Chewing with mouth open
[x] Discussing politics or religion
[x] Food left over on plate
[x] Eating before everyone is served
[x] Elbows on table

[x] Leaving the table to use the toilet
[o] Not tipping
[x] Over-tipping

[x] Separating the bill
[x] Slurping or smacking sounds
[x] Speaking on mobile phone
[x] Speaking with mouth full
[x] Spilling food or drinks on other people
[x] Taking photos of the food

Business

What is the dress code for most businesses? Portuguese people are conservative and cultured, so many businesses dress very formally and high-quality. Jeans and shirts are a no-no.
Is punctuality considered important in your nation? Not as important as hierarchy, productivity and good decision-making. Most meetings start 5 to 10 minutes late, to allow some time for late-comers.
What language is business conducted in? Portuguese. We expect foreign businessmen to speak our language, not the other way around.
How should bosses and coworkers be addressed? Always as «Senhor(a/ita)» + family name, unless they tell you their preference.
Is hierarchy a strong part of your nation's business culture? Yes, companies have a very rigid rank structure and everyone knows their place. Speaking out of turn during a meeting is the biggest unwritten offence.

Something interesting about me: I can wiggle both my ears! I can also crack/pop both my wrists @ will, but I can crack/pop my right wrist easier than my left!

Basics

Is your nation considered "socially conservative"?
Yes, and in fact very much so - at least by 27th century human standards.

Which of these behaviours are acceptable in public?

(Mark [o] for acceptable and [x] for unacceptable)
[x] Breastfeeding (Technically there are no social norms pertaining to it, Sidhae being cyborgs and having no babies to breastfeed)
[x] Burping (Considered rude and uncouth)
[x] Displays of affection (Discreetly holding hands or stealing a quick kiss is already stretching the limits of propriety)
[x] Dressing provocatively (Sidhae are expected to maintain dignified decorum in their attire, though their clothes can at times be quite revealing. This expectation pertains more to dressing tastefully, according to lines of accepted fashion, rather than modestly)
[o] Eating (Obviously, one should eat discreetly in a public place, not gobble down his food like a pig)
[x] Intoxication (Frowned upon strongly)
[x] Passing gas
[x] Ranting about personal issues (Indiscreet about personal affairs and therefore unacceptable)
[x] Smoking (Generally looked down upon as harmful vice)
[x] Swearing
[o] Taking photos of other people (It is still considered common courtesy to ask first)
[x] Wearing beach attire (Because that's what beaches are for)
[o] Wearing sport attire (Unless circumstances specify a different dress code, sportswear is acceptable)
[x] Wearing pyjamas (Because that is a bedroom garment)
[x] Yawning without covering mouth (Because yawning uncovered is unsanitary)

Interactions

How do people in your nation say "hello" and "goodbye"?

The usual casual greeting is "Salve!" Under more formal circumstances, one should use "Ave!" instead. "Vale!" is the standard goodbye word in both casual and formal circumstances.

What do people usually do when greeting each other?
A handshake and maybe a light bow is the usual protocol. Under formal circumstances, one should render the Imperial salute.

Is it expected to greet the owner when entering and leaving a store?
Most stores these days are automated. That being said, it's still common courtesy in ones that still have shopkeepers.

Is it expected to greet the driver when boarding and leaving a bus?
Again, most public transportation is fully automated, but where it's not, it's common courtesy.

Are titles (Mr/Mrs/Miss) used?
Yes. As are Lord/Lady for distinguished individuals who command great respect.

Does your nation's language have familiar and formal forms of "you"?
Yes.

Table manners

Are good table manners considered important in your nation?
Obviously. They might not be overly elaborate, but the existing conventions should be observed at all times, even on casual meals.

How are utensils supposed to be used?
Nothing exquisite, really. There is no set way in which utensils are to be used, it's really how they are used that matters. One should obviously refrain from making too much noise, mess or overt moves while using them.

When is it acceptable to begin eating?
When the host/head of the household has started to eat. In more formal banquets, the start of the meal is usually signified by the customary first toast in honour of the Emperor.

(At restaurants) Who pays for the meal?
The person initiating the date, if it's a date meal. Friends or co-workers going out for a meal pay each for themselves, unless someone has specifically offered to pay for everyone.

How much is the tip/service charge?
Varies. In the more traditional Sidh areas, it is actually considered a faux pas to tip. In areas more influenced by human cultures, it is usually 10% of the bill.

Which of these behaviours are acceptable at mealtimes?

(Mark [o] for acceptable and [x] for unacceptable)
[o] Asking for seconds (if there's enough to go around, no shame in that)
[x] Checking an electronic device (if necessary, it should be done discreetly, but one should refrain from using electronic devices in mealtimes, and should ask to be excused before doing so if it's urgent)
[x] Chewing with mouth open (Disgusting!)
[x] Discussing politics or religion (Considered poor form)
[x] Food left over on plate (one should refrain from leaving uneaten food if possible - both because it may offend the cook by implying a poor taste and because it is wasteful)
[x] Eating before everyone is served (It's common courtesy to wait for everyone to get their food)
[o] Elbows on table (Not improper in a moderate degree, but one obviously shouldn't lean his entire bulk on the table)
[o] Hands below table (No particular taboos there)
[o] Leaving the table to use the toilet (one should ask to be excused first, however)
[o] Not tipping (even those Sidhae who do tip consider tipping a favour for exemplary service rather than an obligation of etiquette)
[x] Over-tipping (even ordinary tipping is considered questionable by many Sidhae)
[o] Refusing to try a dish (everyone is entitled to his own tastes and preferences - if one doesn't eat something for any reason, that is his prerogative)
[o] Separating the bill (nothing unacceptable there)
[x] Slurping or smacking sounds (Disgusting!)
[x] Speaking on mobile phone (If one must make or answer a call, one should ask to be excused first)
[x] Speaking with mouth full (Disgusting!)
[x] Spilling food or drinks on other people (self-evident)
[o] Taking photos of the food (nothing wrong with that in itself)

Business

What is the dress code for most businesses?
Formal wear. In Sidh case, that would be either uniform, powered armor or business attire.

Is punctuality considered important in your nation?
Absolutely.

What language is business conducted in?
Sidh, obviously. Sidhae doing business with foreigners will usually speak their language or use a translator when visiting their partners, and use Sidh when receiving visitors themselves - often to the point of using a translator despite knowing the partners' language.

How should bosses and coworkers be addressed?
Depends on the institution. One's superiors are usually addressed as Sir/Ma'am, and collegues of equal and lower standing as Mr./Ms. If the institution in question happens to use a system of ranks, one should be addressed by one's rank and last name, the aforementioned also being acceptable.

Is hierarchy a strong part of your nation's business culture?
Yes, although bosses are expected to remember that they are still ultimately just first among equals, and should lead their employees by personal example rather than authority.

Giving gifts

Are gifts expected when visiting someone's home?
Only for celebrations.

Are gifts expected between business associates?
On occasion, such as upon signing a contract. Gifts exchanged in this manner should be small and of symbolic value.

Are students expected to bring gifts to their teachers?
No, that would be considered corruption. Students may give their tutor gifts on personal celebrations if they are on such good personal terms, but certainly not where it pertains to studies.

When are gifts supposed to be opened?
Usually they aren't packaged to begin with unless necessary for convenience or safety.

What are some gifts to avoid?
Useless things, unless they have some added quality like antiquity, exotic origin or an interesting history. Sidhae are practical people and prefer their gifts that way too. One should avoid giving common household items that the recipient is likely to have, unless the giver expressely knows that the recipient needs or desires such an item.

Internet

Are people less or more formal online than in real life?
Not much. A Sidh should observe proper form at all times, even in digital communication.

Which of these behaviours are acceptable online?

(Mark [o] for acceptable and [x] for unacceptable)
[o] Abbreviations (depends)
[o] Discussing politics or religion (if the website/forum encourages such discussion)
[x] Not using punctuation (A proper Sidh should know how to write like a civilized sapient being, not an ape given a keyboard)
[x] Provocative photos (unless it's a site specifically for sharing such content)
[x] Ranting about personal issues (unless site/forum encourages such expressions)
[x] Swearing
[x] Typing in all capitals
[x] Typing in all lowercase

Using the road

Which of these behaviours are acceptable on roads?

(Mark [o] for acceptable and [x] for unacceptable)
[x] Cyclist disobeying red light (it's there for a reason)
[x] Driving too fast
[x] Driving too slow
[o] Flashing the headlights
[o] Hitchhiking (very uncommon over most of the Imperium due to the way transportation systems are designed)
[o] Honking the horn (when necessary, obviously)
[x] Jaywalking
[x] Not signalling a turn
[o] Playing loud music
[x] Speaking on mobile phone
[x] Taking up more than one lane
[x] Taking up more than one parking space
[x] Tailgating (depends on the security protocol and tolerance of such behaviour in any given facility)
[x] Texting on mobile phone
Freedom doesn't mean being able to do as one please, but rather not to do as one doesn't please.

A fool sees religion as the truth. A smart man sees religion as a lie. A ruler sees religion as a useful tool.

The more God in one's mouth, the less in one's heart.

Basics

Is your nation considered "socially conservative"? It was for most of it's history, but these days attempts to globalize and modernize the nation has made it significantly more socially progressive overall. Modern Ru is a balancing act between those goals and Ru's own unique culture and traditions.

Which of these behaviours are acceptable in public?

(Mark [o] for acceptable and [x] for unacceptable)
[x] Breastfeeding (rapidly gaining more acceptance, is now not conisdered rude if some token showing of modesty is taken)
[x] Burping
[o] Displays of affection
[o] Dressing provocatively
[o] Eating
[x] Intoxication (more acceptable in entertainment/university areas of a city/town)
[x] Passing gas
[o] Ranting about personal issues
[o] Smoking
[o] Swearing (less acceptable if there are children you do not know nearby, or are in a family oriented area)
[x] Taking photos of other people
[o] Wearing beach attire
[o] Wearing sport attire
[x] Wearing pyjamas
[o] Yawning without covering mouth

Interactions

How do people in your nation say "hello" and "goodbye"? There are a large number of informal greetings that may be used depending on what the greeter prefers in the moment (ex: hi! hiya! etc). There is a smaller number of formal greetings that can be used in settings where one wants to appear more professional or respectful to the listener. Informal greetings are more common in everyday life.

What do people usually do when greeting each other? A smile and/or wave is most common among strangers. A small hug or placing a hand on the shoulder are more familiar greetings that may be used among friends. A handshake is considered a more formal gesture and is thus more common amongst people who want to demonstrate professional respect for the other person.

Is it expected to greet the owner when entering and leaving a store? It is not expected to initiate a greeting yourself, but if you are greeted by them then it is considered rude to not respond likewise.

Is it expected to greet the driver when boarding and leaving a bus? ^see store owner above

Are titles (Mr/Mrs/Miss) used? They are, and such titles are considered to be very formal and respectful, so they are used in professional settings where such respect to the listener is expected/desired. In everyday life it is more common to refer to someone by their first name as while the formal title is considered more respectful and a sign that you view the listener as a superior, an informal first name address is considered friendly. To call someone by their last name only without any title is a sign of disrespect, and is used either to make a point of reinforcing your status as being superior in hierarchy to them, or to show your displeasure with them.

Does your nation's language have familiar and formal forms of "you"? No, though certain titles, greetings, gestures, and word choices are considered to be more formal, respectful, or professional then others.

Table manners

Are good table manners considered important in your nation? Not really. Expectations at the table are heavily influenced by dining custom in ancient Ruvian noble halls even to this day. However, those customs were primarily concerned with seating and the hierarchy of who was served first, rather then how food was to be consumed. Even in those days Ruvians were sometimes considered rather brutish by the nobility of other similar nations due to having fewer rules and a generally greater informality compared to them when it came to dining. For their part, ancient Ruvians considered rules of etiquette that could not be linked to one's duties toward others according to one's place in the Ruvian caste system to be frivolous. This attitude is what may have led to this ancient derisive foreign joke: "What's the difference between the King of Ru and a commoner? The crown."

How are utensils supposed to be used? The fork, knives and spoons are placed on the sides of the plates with the knives and fork usually placed together. sometimes utensils may be placed on a napkin. The order of the utensils and whether they are placed on the left or right is unimportant, but every plate at the table is expected to have the same configuration as all the others. There is traditionally 1 spoon, 1 fork, and 2 knives (a butter knife and a meat cutting knife). The use of utensils is mandatory with the exception of a number of particular foods which are meant to be eaten with one's hands. It is not considered important which hand a diner uses their utensils in or eats with and they are free to have the utensils change hands if they wish. After the meal is over it is expected to stack all the remaining plates and bowls and place the utensils together on top of them, to make it easier for a servant/server to clear the table.

When is it acceptable to begin eating? you may begin eating soon as you are served your food. This is a holdover from Ruvian feudal custom, where the most honored hosts and guests had first choice of dishes and were served first. This order of being served was rigid, symbolic, and based on hierarchy, and thus it was not expected for someone who had been given their food to wait for people below them to be served before they could eat it. Prayers, speeches, or toasts that required everyone's attention were and are expected to be given before the food is brought out.

(At restaurants) Who pays for the meal? The default expectation is for everyone to pay for what they ordered themselves and/or for their own children. When friends and families dine out it is common for one (often a family elder) to pay for the entire bill or for multiple families to split it. With couples, one (traditionally the man) will pay the bill for the other. It is also not unheard of in business meals for the most senior member to pay for their juniors. In any event, to pay for someone else's order is considered a gift to them, and if done spontaneously is often greatly appreciated.

How much is the tip/service charge? Tipping is customary in Ru, and it is generally expected as part of the cost of the meal. 15 to 20% is considered standard, However, some Ruvians go higher if they like their server or are feeling generous, making a a habit of doing so is considered a virtue. Going lower, even for poor service, runs the risk of gaining the disapproval of certain Ruvians, so people who do so often will not advertise it. Failing to tip anything is considered a major breach of etiquette, as is being rude or mean to them. Even when ancient Ru was still a slaver realm, treating your servants rudely was considered unvirtuous and to do so in front of company would cause them to think less of you.

Which of these behaviours are acceptable at mealtimes?

(Mark [o] for acceptable and [x] for unacceptable)
[o] Asking for seconds
[x] Checking an electronic device (acceptable before the food is served, but unacceptable during the meal)
[x] Chewing with mouth open
[x] Discussing politics or religion (only acceptable if you know your fellow diners are generally aligned with you, it is considered rude to presume a person you do not know well would not become aggravated by your stance)
[o] Food left over on plate (it is expected that you try to eat all you have been given, but it is considered understandable if you cannot.)
[o] Eating before everyone is served (you are not expected to wait if you have food in front of you)
[x] Elbows on table
[o] Hands below table
[o] Leaving the table to use the toilet (you are expected to let your fellow diners know you need to use the restroom, but do not need anyone's permission.)
[x] Not tipping
[o] Over-tipping
[o] Refusing to try a dish (waving off dishes was common in the noble halls, either as part of proper etiquette or simply due to not wanting it)
[o] Separating the bill
[x] Slurping or smacking sounds
[x] Speaking on mobile phone
[x] Speaking with mouth full
[x] Spilling food or drinks on other people
[x] Taking photos of the food (considered acceptable among younger Ruvians eating together. Generally you are expected to tell your fellow diners that you are going to take a picture before you do so, permission from them does not seem to be required.)

Business

What is the dress code for most businesses? This depends on the business and its corporate culture. Large traditional businesses, particularly in the legal profession, tend to demand formal and professional attire while more liberal businesses such as small start-ups and tech companies expect very casual attire. People who work in IT tend to dress very informally simply because their specialized skill sets make them hard to replace.

Is punctuality considered important in your nation? Yes, showing up late is considered a sign of unprofessional-ism, a lack of dependability, and that you may not have considered the meeting to be terribly important (otherwise you would have wished to show up early for extra preparation)

What language is business conducted in? English is considered the official trade language so it is most common, especially when dealing with foreigners. Ruvian is common when all involved are native Ruvian speakers.

How should bosses and coworkers be addressed? co-workers and underlings should be addressed by their first name. Bosses may wish to be addressed by a formal title as a sign of respect (Mr. or Mrs. + last name) or they may desire to be referred to by their first name as well to promote teamwork or because they feel it's friendlier. Bosses and work superiors should be addressed according to their individual preference. Underlings may be referred to by last name only, but to be addressed this way is a reinforcement of the speaker being superior to you, so they may not appreciate it.

Is hierarchy a strong part of your nation's business culture? Generally yes, but the rigidity, formality, and complexity of a businesses's hierarchy depends entirely on the corporate culture of the business, it's goals, and what one's work superiors expect.

Giving gifts

Are gifts expected when visiting someone's home? It is not expected, but it is considered particularly polite and kind to do so.

Are gifts expected between business associates? ^see above

Are students expected to bring gifts to their teachers? while not expected, it is a bit traditional for a teacher of small children to receive a small gift from them every now and then, the the student (or their parents) decide they want to make a good impression and be seen as upstanding.

When are gifts supposed to be opened? Gifts are expected to be opened before the gift giver and other guests depart.

What are some gifts to avoid?
-Roses are considered highly romantic and are best avoided if that is not your intent.
-Political or religious gifts if you are unaware of the receiver's beliefs.
-gag-gifts if you do not know the receiver well, likewise on anything that might embarass them in front of other guests
-gifts that the receiver cannot use or doesn't fit their lifestyle

Internet

Are people less or more formal online than in real life? Ruvians are generally significantly less formal and more openly rude on the internet then they would ever dare to be in real life, often even forgoing basic grammar and punctuation rules in any writing that is not for business. This is done either in an attempt to be funny and keep things lighthearted or simply due to laziness.

Which of these behaviours are acceptable online?

(Mark [o] for acceptable and [x] for unacceptable)
[o] Abbreviations
[o] Discussing politics or religion (it is only considered rude to ignore requests to "take the debate to private messaging")
[o] Not using punctuation
[o] Provocative photos
[o] Ranting about personal issues
[o] Swearing
[x] Typing in all capitals (this is considered "shouting", so it's acceptable if you use all-caps sparingly to make a point in this manner)
[o] Typing in all lowercase (this is actually the most common way that Ruvians communicate online!)

Using the road

Which of these behaviours are acceptable on roads?

(Mark [o] for acceptable and [x] for unacceptable)
[x] Cyclist disobeying red light
[x] Driving too fast
[x] Driving too slow
[x] Flashing the headlights (acceptable if you need to get a fellow driver's attention is needed or to warn of hazards, considered highly rude if it is used to communicate your displeasure.)
[o] Hitchhiking
[x] Honking the horn (^see flashing lights)
[o] Jaywalking, (quite common but generally considered a bit inconsiderate, and technically illegal.)
[x] Not signalling a turn
[o] Playing loud music
[o] Speaking on mobile phone (legal, it's rudeness is debateable, however, as many do find it inconsiderate to fellow drivers)
[x] Taking up more than one lane
[x] Taking up more than one parking space
[x] Tailgating
[x] Texting on mobile phone

(OOC: this was alot of fun, a really great way to get into some neat details about the culture of our nations that we usually don't really think about!)

A civilization with an over 3,000 year history of lizard people killing each other and enslaving everyone else. Now they've finally calmed down and formed a modern westernized constitutional monarchy. (long live Emperor Yoshio!)

Note: Any factbook entries over a year old are severely out of date and may be subject to extreme revision and retconning soon. If you have questions on anything about Ru, please feel free to ask.
