Hamster Midget Submarine
I wish to thank No Endorse for providing me valuable engineering advice in working on the Hamster-class.
The Hamster Midget Submarine is offered by Hammond Motors to military contractors, scientific organizations, and members of the smuggling delivery industry. As a military tool it is somewhat limited, lacking a lot of the equipment that is common in dedicated weapons.
That said, the Hamster Midget Submarine is primarily intended forsmuggling discrete delivery of cargos. For this reason, and because it is designed for sales to the private sector, some features typical to combat submarines have been deleted from the design.
The Hamster Midget Submarine is intended to primarily be deployed from within dedicated tender (‘mothership’) vessels, and for this reason it has a limited range. Its propulsion is a pair of electric drives utilizing two electric engines and arrays of NiMH batteries.
Armament and Cargo Containers: The Hamster submarine has two principal means of cargo delivery. The first is the existence of 4 533mm torpedo bays, each capable of launching a standardized 533mm Discreet Delivery Vessel or a naval torpedo. Four DDV are loaded in the torpedo bays, and additionally four more can be stored on board. In addition, two metal containers, each with a capacity of 2.5 tons of cargo, may be attached at the sides of the submarine, giving it a somewhat bulbous appearance (somewhat like the inflated cheek-sacks of certain rodents, thus the submarine’s name). Pressing a command switch from the submarine commander’s dashboard will cause these containers to detach and (typically) sink to the bottom. Alternately, a vessel can come alongside and winch the containers aboard, using winch-ears mounted on their sides. Mounting the containers reduces stealth somewhat, as well as speed.
While it is possible to shoot a variety of 533mm weapons from the submarine’s torpedo tubes, and while it is possible to fairly easily retrofit it to control various weaponry, Hammond Motors primarily markets the Hamster as a delivery, and not a weapons system. We are not responsible for any mishaps that arise from use of any weaponry or delivery vehicles, that the Hammond Motors Hamster has not been tested with at factory, nor for any casualties that arise from attempts to utilize the Hamster in combat. Military contractors who wish to use a specific weapons system on board the Hamster should contact us for clarification before ordering.
In addition, three storage rooms (two after, one forward) are available to store various equipment, either for use by the crew, or for delivery. The two aft rooms are fairly large, while the front one is a smaller room and intended for use by the crew. The difficulties of removing the cargo from the submarine during discreet deliveries should be considered.
Crew facilities: The Hamster is not designed for long-term travel. Four crewmen operate the various controls, however any serious repairs can only be done on a ‘mothership’ vessel or in court. In addition, bunks for six more passengers (divers capable of insertion through a DDV or by swimming to shore) exist on board the vessel. For very short journeys, it is possible to place as many as 16 passengers on board, however some of them will be either standing, or lying inside the DDVs.
There is no galley of any real description, although provisions are provided for small appliances such as microwaves or electric kettles. A Hammond-motors branded microwave and an electric kettle and coffee maker are provided free of charge with the Hamster. A single flat-screen TV, small lockers for personal items and weapons for the crew and six passengers, and trickle-charging gear for personal electronics are available.
Temperature aboard the submarine is normalized towards 16 degrees celsius, there is no way to control this setting.
Sensors: The Hamster has a communications buoy, an extendible antenna, a visual/IR periscope, a digital periscope (that’s to say, a cable attached to a buoy with some cameras on it), and a passive and an active short-range SONAR. Obviously these SONAR are not full-scale military SONAR. Modern submarines could hypothetically sneak up on the Hamster.
Engines:A pair of 200-KW engines propels the Hamster-class forward, drawing its power from 5.5 tons of commercial off-the-shelf NiMH automobile battery packs of 100 KWh each. These are located in the sides and bottom of the submarine, and can only be removed and replaced aboard the mothership. This permits the engines to achieve - in some narrow conditions, with the containers removed - a top speed of 15 knots. In long-term operations, the top speed is 8 knots surfaced and ten knots submerged, the maximum range being 500 miles.
When aboard the mothership, the battery packs can be replaced or recharged.
