No SAF member states were ever members, but I'd assume Saudi Arabia would be.

NS Nation Name: Dayganistan
Nation Name: Iran
Character Position: President
Character Name Rustam Ghaznavi
Flag of your nation: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... 980%29.svg
One paragraph history of your country, faction, or unit: In 2009, massive protests were sparked among Iranian youth following the re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, believing the election to be fraudulent. Their demands were simple, Ahmadinejad be removed from office and a new election held. The government responded by deploying riot police, but the protests continued. More and more protestors started to turn out, and soon the entire city of Tehran had been essentially shut down by protests. By this point, the protestors were calling for the complete overthrow of the Islamic Republic.

The response from the Iranian government was to deploy the army and Revolutionary Guards to Tehran in order to deal with the massive protests. However, deploying the army was the government's fatal mistake. When ordered to fire upon civilians, the largely conscript force refused their orders and turned over to the protestors. Mid level officers soon started taking control of army units across the country. A coup was underway. The army in Tehran, accompanied by thousands of protests, marched on the Iranian parliament. They were engaged by the Revolutionary Guard, but managed to push through, eventually seizing the building. Ahmadinejad was arrested by the 65th Airborne Brigade at Mehrabad Airport. The Ayatollah, however, was nowhere to be found for days after the coup.

Upon seizing the parliament, the officer leading the coup, Colonel Farvad Rostami, declared the establishment of the Republic of Iran, a secular, democratic republic. The country was to be under emergency military administration for a period of one year before new elections would be held. However, all was not well. While many Iranians celebrated the end of the Islamic Republic, many were unhappy with this turn of events. Members of the Basij and Revolutionary Guards went into hiding, and started to wage a guerilla war against the new Iranian government. The most successful operation carried out by the remnants of the Revolutionary Guard occurred in March of 2010, when they managed to seize control of the city of Qom. The Iranian military regained control of the city by the end of August, and emergency military rule was extended until January of 2011. Despite the massive defeat at Qom, Islamist insurgency continues in Iran today although at a fairly low level.

Iran finally held its first free and fair elections in January of 2011, with elections being held for the President and parliament simultaneously. Hundreds of parties ran candidates in the election and no party was outlawed, not even Islamist or arguably fascist parties. A coalition government was formed between the National Front and Party of the Iranian Nation, with the National Front candidate Rustam Ghaznavi taking the presidency. Ghaznavi was re-elected in the 2015 elections and the composition of the parliament remained relatively unchanged.

Following the coup, Iran began to open up more to the outside world. Sanctions were lifted and there was a strong flow of trade between Iran and western nations. Iran also began exporting more and more oil, while also allowing foreign companies to drill for oil in Iran. Iran's economy quickly became one of the fastest growing in the world. With their new wealth, Iran was also able to rebuild their military to a much more modern standard, and is not afraid to defend their regional interests and expand their influence.
Government Form: Semi-presidential republic
Army Size: 350,000 active, 350,000 reserve
Army Technology: Mix of modern and Cold War
Navy Size: 18,000 personnel
293 vessels (mostly small fast attack craft, not all vessels are operational)
45 aircraft
Air Force: 52,000
634 fixed wing aircraft
341 rotary wing
Does your nation have WMDs: No
Territory of country: Same as modern Iran.
One paragraph history of your character: Rustam Ghaznavi was a relatively popular figure in the Iranian opposition, starting his political activities as a university student in the late 1980s. In 1998 he was imprisoned by the Iranian government for distributing opposition literature calling for the establishment of a secular republic and re-implementation of the reforms of Mohammed Mossadegh. He was released following the 2009 coup. Immediately following his release from prison, Ghaznavi entered politics once again, joining up with the National Front. He immediately began to campaign hard for the National Front and was influential in shaping their current platform. He quickly started to become a popular political figure in Iran, becoming even more popular once he announced his intention to run for president. He of course, had his detractors. He was claimed to be unprepared by reformers who had worked within the Iranian regime as he had never held a public office before. But people legitimately believed in him and his campaign stops throughout Iran attracted huge crowds. Finally, in January of 2011, he was elected President of Iran. Under his leadership, he was able to enact a very large amount of his platform, and proving many of his detractors wrong. He was re-elected with an even larger percentage of the vote for a second term.
