One paragraph history of your country, faction, or unit:The Death of the Supreme Leader
When Kim Jong-Il died in December 19, 2011, the whole North Korean leadership was in shock. The Supreme Leader - was dead. While a successor had been nominated and the ruling members of the North Korean Government decided what would be the best course of action, a group of like-minded individuals began to make their move. These people who would later christen themselves the National Restoration Committee who consisted of members of the military and civilian governments. These were people in the higher echelons of the North Korean Government who were dissatisfied with the current state of affairs and saw the death of Kim Jong-il was a best time for a power grab.
They saw their "Supreme infallible Leader" as a tyrant who ruled in luxury while the people suffered under his rule. They became sick of residing in comfort and decadence while their neighbors were dying from starvation and had no access to the basic essentials. They saw the opulence and wealth of the South and envied such progress for their own nation. So when the Supreme Leader died and a relatively unknown successor, Kim Jong-Un, was chosen to lead the Korean people, they knew that it was no or never. In their minds was the words of an old Communist leader who said, "History will never forgive us, Revolutionaries, for being late."
The Jang Sung-taek Plot
The week after Kim Jong-Un took power, he "mysteriously" died in a car accident at night in Pyongyang. The following morning the North Korean Government declared a state of Emergency and the entire North Korean military was mobilized. The world held its breath as the military coup was underway. Conveniently at noon a group of individuals calling themselves the National Restoration Committee announced that a plot has been discovered in the government which threatens to undermine the security and stability of the Democratic People's Republic. They determined that Jang Sung-taek, vice Chairman of the National Defense Commission, was orchestrating a plot to the overthrow of the Government by assassinating the Supreme Leader, Kim Jong-Un. They also accused him of orchestrating the death of Kimg Jong-Il was well.
Jang Sung-taek was arrested by midnight and numerous other military, civilian, and political leaders were arrested within the same month. The official statement was that these individuals were part of the plot to overthrow the government. However a few outside sources indicated that the majority of the people arrested were loyal to the Kim Family. The leader of the National Restoration Committee was the new leader of the Ministry of State Security, General Cho Ji-Hun. General Cho Ji-Hun was a top military official in the Ministry of State Security and had risen in the ranks following the arrest of his superior, General Kim Won-hong. After a series of show trials and public executions, it was clear that the National Restoration Committee and its leader, General Cho-Ji-Hun were the defacto heads of the North Korean State. It was from this moment that a new Korea would arise.
The Thaw
Following the successfully coordinated and popularly supported coup against the Jangists (A term used for those who were part of the supposed plot), the National Restoration Committee began to slowly liberalize the North Korean state. The first act of the government was to allow free speech into the public sphere and they first did this by denouncing the Jangists and then the Kim Family themselves. They announced that the Kim Family had betrayed the ideals of the Revolution and had became tyrants and oppressors to the Korean people. By a national decree, all statues and iconography of the Kim Family was to be removed immediately from all government buildings and structures. Ironically the only free speech that was limited was praise towards the Kim Family. Those who praised or still supported the Kim Family were declared 'enemies of the people'. Since the National Restoration Committee consisted of members of both the civilian and the military government, they claimed legitimacy.
The North Korean State was declared a Marxist-Leninist state and General Cho Ji-Hun was to be the head of the new government and the leader of the Korean Worker's Party. As the Chairman of the Korean Worker's Party and head of the Ministry of State Security, Chairman Cho Ji-Hun embarked on a campaign to liberalize the North Korean State and people. He promised multi-party elections in the future and more rights be given to the North Korean citizenry. His policies had been described by outside observers as similar to that of Nikita Khrushchev and Mikhail Gorbachev. He called his polices "Socialism with a human face." His first international gesture towards peace was to announce the deconstruction of North Korea's missile program and reinvest it towards nuclear energy.
In the beginning of 2016, the National Restoration Committee began a gradual restructuring of the government giving more power to the Supreme People's Assembly and announces it intentions of allowing the creation of other parties apart from the current ones. Elections were to be held in 2018 and Chairman Cho-Ji-Hun had announced his intentions of running for his position. Should he gain his position by popular vote, he will step down as the Head of the Ministry of State Security and find a suitable replacement. If not, he will step down but continue being the head of the Ministry of State Security.
While the future looks more uncertain than ever, the new North Korean leadership expresses its hope that it can revitalize the nation and ensure its propserty for future generations.

One paragraph history of your character:Cho Ji-Hun was born on November 9th, 1966. Like many of his fellow North Koreans, he grew up having an indomitable faith in the Supreme Leader and the Party. He willfully was conscripted into the North Korean Military and was soon elevated into the position of the Ministry of State Security for his zeal for the party and especially the Supreme Leader. His role in the Ministry of State Security was the confiscation of unpatriotic property and the interrogation of political dissidents. He was delighted and proud to be part of the North Korean Secret Police. He would work without a break and interrogate prisoners or suspected dissidents and defectors for ten hours straight without a pause. He would always wonder why these people refused to believe in the Supreme Leader. After all, it was Kim Il-Sung who brought the country up from its ruin after the American Imperialists destroyed it.
However as the interrogations went on and he kept on confiscating more and more dissenting material, his curiosity got the better of him. While interrogating a North Korean Christian, Cho Ji-Hun was surprised to see this Christian's resolve towards him. In particular, this Christian was expressing his "love for him" and told Ji-Hun about the love of God. Cho Ji-Hun tried numerous torture methods but the Christian would not give up his attempts to persuade Ju-Hun. Curious, Cho Ji-Hun decided to read this dissident's Bible to find contradictions in it. While he did find the contradictions he thought he did, he was intrigued by the writing of the book. After a while, his interrogations with this man became less about him and more about this God he believed in.
As he began more open towards this Christianity, he also began reading some of the confiscated material that was not yet destroyed or collected. From there his doubts about the party and the Supreme Leader grew more and more. On a cold January Night of 2001 and in a cell block, he confessed to this dissident that he was interested in becoming a Christian. This surprised the dissident but he helped him with the salvation prayer. The dissident was sentenced to life imprisonment by Ji-Hun's superior but throughout this time, nobody suspected Ji-Hun of being a dissident in the ranks of the Ministry of State Security.
Inspired by this God of the Bible and the other confiscated readings, he decided to find like-minded individuals and look for ways to change the country from the inside. It was tedious and dangerous work, and he almost got caught three times, but he was able to find like-minded individuals in the party, in industrial sectors, and in the military who felt that the Kim Family should no longer be in power. While they had different views regarding certain topics of politics, they all mutually agreed that the Kim Family had betrayed the ideals of the Revolution and were enslaving the Korean People. This secret circle which later became the base of the National Restoration Committee, elected Ji-Hun to be the leader of their circle since he was the one who organized them. Ji-Hun humbly took this position and all had agreed to increase their rank in the government by any means necessary to ensure that the right pieces would be in place should an opportunity arise to overthrow the Kim Family. While hints of this plot were discovered, the self-sacrificing nature of the members of the circle, ensured that no outsider would know the true scale of the growing elite dissident movement in the North Korean Society and government.
When the Supreme Leader Kim Jong-Il died, it was Ji-Hun who urged the others that now was the time to seize power. As the other players in the North Korean Government were busying preparing Kim Jong-Un for succession and thinking of ways to preserve Kim Jong-Ils legacy, the National Restoration Committee began making calls to loyal military commanders and civilian leaders. A certain unit of the special forces was assigned to assassinate Kim Jong-Un and ensure the swift arrests and executions of other members of the Kim Family still in Korea. Since he knew that the Kims would be still popular, he planned to use their deaths as matyrs and frame the assassination on a prominent member of the North Korean Government, Jang Sung-taek, who was a key supporter of the Kim Family.
With the success of the coup and elimination of any possible threats to the National Restoration Committee, his first action as leader of the nation was to release all the political prisoners from the work camps. Following these actions were steps to rewrite the North Korean Constitution and give more rights and liberties to the citizens. He also planned to have a more democratic North Korea in the future. While the thought of reunification had crossed his mind, he felt that the North Korean and South Korean peoples were not ready for such a change. Due to his position as both the leader of the National Restoration Committee and head of the Ministry of State Security, he was able to implement his policies and assess public opinion regarding it. He was harsh to anyone who still had any feelings towards the Kim Family and often sent them to the now empty labor camps as punishments.
As the new year of 2018 begins, Ji-Hun hopes that the North Korean people will be ready to actually take power for themselves so that the National Restoration Committee could disband peacefully. He doesn't care about how the vote would sway since he feels this is impact on the nation had ensured his place in history and society. If people were to regard him in the same light as the Supreme Leader, he would immediately remind them that he is only a man and it is up to them on how to run the nation.
