Ice Hockey: St. Andrei wins Dynamo Derby in penalties

St. Andrei, RS - Even if the SHS is young, there have been a few rivalries building up prior to its first game. One of the fiercest expected rivalries was the derby between the two teams backed and affiliated with the state police, capital-based Dynamo Sjoedrhavn and Russica's Dynamo St. Andrei. Not only is it a duel between two teams of the same institution, it also is the duel between two teams who have not been shying away from paying large amounts of money to ensure their superiority in the prestige battle against the teams of various branches of the Armed Forces. The nation's security institutions entered a competition for bragging rights with the Army's clubs located in its main bases of Thorsborg and Landsmark, the Navy fielding two teams in Storevik (Admiral) and Pawlograd (SK Torpedo) and the Air Force putting their effort into Virkaja's Aviator team. But of course, the rivalries between the Dynamo, (C)ASK and Navy teams is even bigger than the one between the institutions.

The Dynamos both had six points when Sjoedrhavn travelled to the mainland last night to visit its brother team in St. Andrei, a duel gaining additional fire from St. Andrei's importance as the old capital of both Russian minorities and Savojar Christianity. They lost no time in reassuring each other of their dislike for the opponent, when St. Andrei's giant Dmitri Vasilyev laid the 25 cm shorter and almost 30 kg lighter winger Jonas Gulbrandsson to the ice. Vasilyev's check, which was deemed fair play by the referee, lead to a fight between the two sides only two minutes into the game and the ejection of Vasilyev and Sjoedrhavn's Nikolaj Hendersen for engaging in a fistfight. The game was hard, but mostly fair. Nevertheless, the amount of hard checks and rough plays lead to a total of seven penalties for St. Andrei and four for Sjoedrhavn. As a result, the efficiency of the host's powerplay kept them in a game that was largely dominated by the visitors for the first two periods. Pavel Rasnikov and Patrik Nyström equalized twice in the powerplay after Virttanen and Nilsson had brought Sjoedrhavn ahead 0-1 and 1-2 in the first period. Late in the second period, a slapshot by defender Erik Kristiansen brought Sjoedrhavn up 3-2, a result that seemed to hold.

But then, Sjoedrhavn relied too heavily on defense and its young goalkeeper Petter Malmström, and quickly received payback. After a third period in which St. Andrei dominated the game, the defense of the visitors seemed tired and had been scored on six minutes before the end. A shot by Troels was deflected by a defender and Malmström had to concede a rebound, which Rasnikov used to score his second goal of the night. After the goal, Sjoedrhavn seemed disoriented and somewhat scared despite the efforts of coach Franzen to get his team back on track. It was only thanks to a great save by Malmström and some luck when Varinin hit the post with a one-timer unstoppable for the goalkeeper that the Sjoedrholmers got into OT. There, the two teams seemed to be scared and played very defensively despite the 3on3 overtime that was introduced together with the formation of a professional league. The best chances were a rather weakly played breakaway for Rasnikov and a deflected shot by Kristiansen that went just a little wide. In the shootout, Valeri Nuryzhin was the only player to score a goal when he caught Malmström with a quick wrister to the five-hole. This result leaves the two Dynamos tied for third, with a slight advantage to St. Andrei who has scored two more goals (but goals scored are not taken into account in the new SHS). Nevertheless, this derby victory will be an event of great joy to St. Andrei's police officials who can now claim bragging rights over their Sjoedrholmer colleagues.

Naturally, the two coaches assessed the game fundamentally different, with Sjoedrholm's Hjalmar Franzen commending his team's effort in the first two periods, but criticizing mental aspects of his side. "We need to keep in mind that games last for sixty minutes, and sometimes more. St. Andrei had no chance of breaking through our play, and we had a lot more puck possession, and this made us forgot that it was only 2-3. I take some of the blame upon myself, we should definitely have called a time-out when we still could - but then they scored, slightly lucky, and we were too scared to answer", the coach described the game at the press conference. St. Andrei's Slava Vestrak claimed that his team showed the fighter qualities he wanted them to show. "We had a very rough start to the game, with Vasilyev being ejected and a goal scored early on. Maybe we had a bit of luck when the referees gave penalties to Sjoedrhavn that were sometimes a little strict, but that is part of the game. I told my boys to keep fighting in the breaks, and that's what they did. It would have been nice to end it in the overtime, but hey, victory is victory!", an enthusiastic Vestrak told us.

In the rest of the round, Traktor St. Andrei won their fifth game in a row against Sjoedrhavn SHK, beating them 3-4 thanks to a disputed disallowed goal by SHK's top scorer Denis Pedersen in the last two minutes. Pedersen and his team believed that the goal was regular, but a coach's challenge by Traktor showed that he was narrowly off-side prior to the goal. PT Hovikkära won the city derby against Skipsmän with 0-1, therefore keeping the second place one point behind Traktor. The surprise of the league remains the remote, Northeastern team of SK Chemie Frisks. Despite a narrow loss to SK Torpedo Pawlograd, the Chemiker, who had been seen as a contender for last place, hold onto their 7th rank. Chemie, however, has not clashed with one of the top teams of the league yet.

Dynamo St. Andrei 4-3 Dynamo Sjoedrhavn (SO) (1-2, 1-1, 1-0)

GOALS: 7' Virttanen 0-1 (Johanson). 13' Rasnikov 1-1 (Nuryzhin, Denisov/Penalty Lindberg). 16' Nilsson 1-2 (Nurchenko, Asgeirsson). 32' Nyström 2-2 (Shirokov, Elyagin/Penalty Jacobsson). 37' Kristiansen 2-3 (Wallborg). 54' Rasnikov 3-3 (Troels).

Johan Bryzhnev to leave Partizan?

Novaya Russica, RS - Speculations are running high on the future of Partizan Novaya Russica's young star Johan Bryzhnev. The 19 year old is expected to lead the U20 national team and many expect the LW to play in the A National Team as well. Partizan, the team of the Russica Savojar Communist Party, has taken the young Bryzhnev under its wings when he was 15, but now that the winger has excelled at the first few weeks of professional hockey in Savojarna, many suggest that he will leave the struggling team. With 12 points, he is currently second in the scorer list behind Hovikkära's Tuomas Jaskinen, only behind in number of goals. His team, however, is 18th, missing the playoffs by goal difference right now. Bryzhnev scored a goal in all the last three matches for his squad, and nevertheless all that resulted were two points against 22nd placed Kjefla Vulkan in a 0-1 victory. Especially hurtful for Partizan was its 2-4 home loss last saturday against a shaky Akademisk team. Even though they were behind most of the game, Akademisk turned it with two goals in the last seven minutes and topped it off with an empty-netter. Losses like this, against direct opponents for the playoffs, hurt Partizan Novaya Russica possibly more than the team can take.

Despite their relatively poor performance, they share the second place in goals scored with Dynamo St. Andrei, not the least thanks to Bryzhnev. The 19 year old's efforts do however often get overshadowed by his team's shaky defense, the second weakest in the league. Only last-placed Lok Markka concedes even more goals. In this situation, Johan Bryzhnev surely cannot be expected to stay with Partizan in the long run. Rumours include a transfer to the relatively closely tied RHK Savojagrad or PT Hovikkära. However, the former suffers from similar problems in defense and already has plenty of firepower, the latter leads the league and may not be willing to acquire another offensive player, nor can Bryzhnev be sure to receive the high number of ice time he enjoys at Partizan. SK Torpedo Pawlograd, suffering from offensive lack of firepower, seems to be reluctant to spend money on offensive players and may prefer a more experienced alternative. Therefore, other observers talked about a possibile transfer abroad, most notably to Mercedini. Further rumours have been raised about a transfer to what is arguably one of the best and most competitive leagues in the world, the Arctic NZEL. Bryzhnev himself fueled these rumours by saying that the NZEL would be a dream for him when asked about such a transfer. There are no contract proposals yet, but we will keep you updated.

In other SHS news, Dynamo St. Andrei only narrowly beat Lokomotive Markka last night to gain a point in the race for the top as PT Hovikkära surprisingly dropped a point at home against Akademisk. Dynamo Sjoedrhavn, as the last of the top 3, lost another shootout against Torpedo and therefore is now one point behind St. Andrei and two behind PT. Chemie Frisks lost against Traktor St. Andrei and had to let the Farmers pass them, but nevertheless the Chemiker remain the league's biggest surprise, remaining in sixth position despite having faced heavyweights such as Sjoedrhavn SHK (and beat them away).
The first resigning coach of the league is likely to be found in Thorsborg, where CASK coach Calle Johanson is playing for his job, and not doing it very well. CASK had lost its third game in a row last night when ASK Landsmark won the prestigious derby of the two Army clubs in the shootout. The last - and only - victory in regulation of Johanson's team, built to win the league, stems from MD5 when they beat HK Metall Jarnstad 0-2 in an away game. Since then, all that they had achieved was a shootout win against ESK. Johanson also lost two highly prestigious matches with the CASK-ASK duel and the derby against Thorsborgs Technik. CASK Thorsborg find themselves at 23rd at the moment, with only four points and just as many behind a playoff spot.

Calle Calls Quits

Thorsborg, VH - Calle Johanson, coach of army club CASK Thorsborg, has officially resigned from his post. CASK had officially proclaimed the playoff semifinals as their goal, but after a quarter of the season, they ended up at the bottom of the league. The team had already been in trouble for some time, and had put their hope on the return of star forward Mikael Söderberg who was injured for five games. In a crisis situation, Söderberg had returned from his ankle injury three days earlier than expected to help his team against Lok Markka and RHK Savojagrad over the weekend. Markka, being 23rd in the league, was generally assumed to be a welcome opportunity to pick up much needed points. However, this proved horribly wrong when Thorsborg had lost a 1-3 lead in the second period and a 3-4 lead in the last one. Three goals for Markka in nine minutes - one of them an empty-netter - sealed CASK's fate at the bottom of the league. In a press conference after the game, Johanson admitted mistakes that, as he claims, "are obvious if a team loses a game they controlled so obviously in the beginning". Pressed on the subject, he claimed that if there would not be substantial improvements in the next days, he would discuss his position in the club together with the team and the staff. Two days later, a home game against RHK Savojagrad was lost as well, leading to Johanson's resigning.

Even though a difficult game and possibly a loss against Savojagrad was expected in the current situation, Johanson claimed that he could not take responsibility for the play of CASK anymore and that he did not believe that he could have a better long-term impact than a new coach. Savojagrad dominated CASK in any aspect through the first period and was only not taking the lead thanks to a great display of CASK goalkeeper Niklas Hoyman. Hoyman stopped 15 shots in the first period, but was unable to stop the brilliant powerplay goal that led to the lead for RHK after 25 minutes. In the following minutes, CASK seemed completely disorientated and conceded another goal fairly quickly. As a timeout could only somewhat stabilize the team, speculation towards Johanson was already running during the game. After 40 minutes, fans chanted "Quit, Calle, Quit!". Despite the goal scored by Thorsborg later in the period, the team was never close to a return to the game except for a lucky strike that never happened. Johanson justified his decision at the press conference, saying that "the game had shown to him he had lost the connection to the team and his tactical concept did not work for CASK". Johanson had never worked with a high-class team like Thorsborg before, and has a reputation of being a coach more suitable for small teams.

His successor is unclear, even though there are rumours about current Traktor St. Andrei assistance coach Thierry Sandvik. Other names mentioned are CASK's U20 coach Ari Tarkka or Ragnar Fridtjofsson, former coach of ESK Storevik who got replaced as the club professionalized. Currently, Johanson's assistant Kaspar Jensen took over until a new coach is found. However, Jensen is not expected to hold this position for a long time since CASK must seek new impulses. Rumours of foreign coaches being considered are raised, but deemed unlikely given the prestigious position of the Army Club.

At the top of the table, the teams have come together as Sjoedrhavn SHK got a narrow away victory against PT Hovikkära. The former leaders are now one point behind a trio of Dynamo Sjoedrhavn, Dynamo St. Andrei and Traktor St. Andrei, who all won their last game, tied on 19 points. Dynamo Sjoedrhavn had to go through the shootout to get a victory over city rival Akademisk, which cost them the chance to take the lead alone. Chemie continues their fairytale season, cementing their standing in the top 10 of the standings with a shootout victory against Thorsborgs Technik on Friday. Saturday, they lost a home game against Landsmark who is approaching the playoffs again. The struggle around the cut is still incredibly tight, with six teams being tied on 10 points, but only two of them being above the line. Thorsborgs Technik had suffered two losses in a row and slides down towards the cut again, while the struggling Partizan forced Traktor St. Andrei into overtime and beat the Techniker last night in a crucial victory that brought them up to a tie with the playoff spots. However, with only two points separating the 9th (HK Metall Jarnstad) and the 20th (Hovikkära Skipsmän), everything is still open.

Sports: PT asserting the Glory of the Party in hockey

Thorsborg, VH - Our sportive Comrades from PT Hovikkära, the Party's own sports organisation, is still going strong in the national league, beating the People's Army's CASK Thorsborg in shootouts. The CASK team has been a true challenge for our young workers in red and white, but was finally overcome in PT's fourth victory in a row. PT won in a great display of workmanship and creativity, skill and industriousness, that was able to beat the fierce and physical defense of CASK. The army team had been displaying new-found virtues under new coach Ragnar Fridtjofsson. Fridtjofsson had let his team play a hard, physical game resulting in a new-found trust in their abilities. PT's coach Petteri Ranttu tried to answer this play by speed, by skill and by a strict tactical corset of backchecking and avoiding to fall to CASK's dangerous blue-liners and the shots they frequently launch.

It worked well from the beginning. Even if there were multiple dangerous situations, PT survived most of the game very good. It took the team of CASK a big effort to get to scoring chances, and it never really worked. But when it did, goalkeeper Janne Sekunen had a very good night, finishing with a shutout and 34 saves. Most of CASK's chances happened in situations of powerplay, when the big, bulky attackers of the Thorsborger were able to create space in front of the goals and get shots onto Sekunen. They were surprisingly quick on rebounds, getting a lot of danger out of them, but never really got past him. The lone exception was a disallowed goal in the second period, when Fransson scored a goal, but Sekunen had been interfered with and pushed out of the way by Söderberg. In the end, PT started to come out on top more and more, but eventually had to take it to overtime and a shootout. Both sides were very active and fought for victory, but it took a total of eight penalty shots to find PT as a winner.

Hovikkära now remains on the second place, seven points behind the leaders of Police team Dynamo Sjoedrhavn and equal on points with Dynamo St. Andrei, who they had beaten 4-2 in St. Andrei. Following are ESK Storevik and International Pawlograd, wiwth 27 and 24 points. The other party team, Partizan Novaya Russica, put up a great fight against Dynamo Sjoedrhavn, but lost 5-4. This result put them two points behind the playoffs and on the 19th place.

SavojarSports.sj - inside reports from all Savojarna
SHS I Playoff Preview

Dynamo Sjoedrhavn vs. HK Metall Jarnstad
This shall be a fairly one-sided affair between two tradition clubs. Dynamo was the first team to secure a spot after MD 33, and they never gave up the lead again. The team was carried largely by the performance of its defense around Erik Kristiansen and goalkeeper Petter Malmström, a formerly quite unknown player who will probably be nominated for the World Cup (OOC: the playoffs are being played before WCoH 32 IC'ly) after the playoffs are done. Its offense is centered around Frans Djurberg and Jonas Gulbrandsson, who are spread out over a high-speed second line and a more physical first line. This posed problems for many teams that do not feature two strong defensive lines.
HK Metall only qualified on the last day, being tied on points with local rival Spartakus. However, they were one of only five teams to score more than hundred goals, but also one of four to concede more than 100 goals. Goalkeeper Marcus Jauslason was no more than a solid mid-field GK (18th in saves percentage of goalies who played 10 or more games), and the defense suffered a lot from injury, with both top defenders Ruhanen and Bengtsson missing over 15 games. They will rely a lot on the offensive power of Hjalmarsson to score. Prediction: Dynamo Sjoedrhavn wins 4-1

PT Hovikkära vs. SK Chemie Frisks
PT Hovikkära had a very constant season and, like Dynamo, was on top of the game most of the time. PT is also the blueprint of strategic hockey in the nation, focusing largely on tactics and controlling the game's flow through suffocating the opponent. Their large forechecking abilities will put SK Chemie under high pressure. PT has relatively few stars and tends to fly under everyone's radar, and their top scorer was Tuomas Jaskinen who just made the milestone of 50 points with a three-point-night in the last game against Energie. Nevertheless, they are a favourite especially against weaker teams such as Chemie.
SK Chemie opened the season surprisingly strong and was seventh after a quarter of the season, but then fell into the expected crisis in the second half. In the end, Chemie struggled big time and only won the qualification thanks to forward Axel Helguson, who scored a goal 1:18 before the end to tie a match against Traktor St. Andrei. In the shootout, the team won the game and qualified for the playoffs. The largest assets for Frisks will be their defense, which is fairly solid, and their home stadium, a remote and small affair that is very uncomfortable for opposing teams. Prediction: PT Hovikkära wins 4-2.

RHK Savojagrad vs. Admiral Storevik
RHK Savojagrad was always expected to reach the play-offs, but it was a slight surprise that they came third and to be honest, nobody really knows how they ended up there. It has certainly to do with their firepower, coming in at 104 goals and the only team that scored more but conceded less than 100 goals. Mikko Simonen plays a big role in this effort and is expected to be the starting center of the Savojar NT, but a lot of their success also came from the blue line, where Vyacheslav Glukov and Alexey Yarchenko were a constant danger. Their weakness potentially lays in goalie Karel Periskin and the depth of the defense. This was however greatly improved by the signing of Novozemlyan NT defender Andrei Alenichev.
Storevik, however, is probably not the team to take advantage of that. The team plays very creatively, but does usually not get a lot of shots off. Their defense remains a lot on positioning and the poke, which has gone wrong multiple times against big teams such as RHK. Savojagrad also has some fairly quick offenders, which will put Admiral deep into trouble. Offense output will potentially rely too much on the combination of Bajranov/Sakharev to trouble RHK's first defense much. Expects loads of scoring, but potentially one-sided. Prediction: RHK Savojagrad wins 4-1.

ESK Storevik vs. Thorsborgs Technik
The season of ESK was a very successful one, and while no star emerged from this team, it is very promising for the future thanks to the young age of most of its members. It has a good mix of more experienced players, such as the 28 year old first defense pairing around Samuelsson and Fridtjofsson, and young talents such as the 19 year old rookie Thorbjörn Ansgarsson on the right wing. The anchor of the team is Viktor Davidsson in net, a 32 year old routinier who was expected to be called into the WCoH squad, but will probably miss out because he was injured for a good part of the season, as well as the desire of Fredrik Rundblad to call up younger goalies. This year may be a little too early for ESK, but the Storeviker will have a great shot at the title in the next few seasons.
Thorsborgs Technik was pretty much the embodiment of averageness in this season and ended up on top of the second half of the table. The 13th of the League won 19 and lost 20 games, with both 88 goals scored and conceded. The Techniker also played about an average, balanced game, and like with ESK, the team is the star. They will certainly be able to punch through the defense of ESK a few times, and to hold off their opponents most of the time, but like with many of the teams in this area, there is not really a reason why Thorsborg would be expected to excite or amaze us in this year. This is the face of a solid team that comfortably qualifies only to drop out of Playoff Octos. Prediction: ESK Storevik wins 4-2.

Aviator Virkaja vs. Sjoedrhavn SHK
Now this is the first one where I do hesitate to attribute it to a favourite. Unlike other teams (Dynamo and RHK), Aviator didn't really have the luck of running into a team that suits them very well. Virkaja enjoys to let itself fall back and then roll over the opponent, scoring a lot of points on odd-man-situations and the powerplay. They rely a lot on explosive offense and a hard-working, grinding defense, taking work off their somewhat shaky young keeper Ville Kerjanen by building a pocket around him. On offense, their main weapons are the skill and speed of Niskänen and Grigorenko. The two have often showed that they don't like to run into a set defense.
And this is where SHK comes into play. The team did a good job in defense thanks to the signing of Axelsson and Jarborg. Additionally, with Erik Valdersen resigning as coach, they made a bold move in giving control to the only 38 year old Patrik Hansen. Hansen, whose only coaching experience was three years as assistant under Valdersen, employed a prudent defensive strategy that, while being fairly daring in possession of the puck, sees the defense fall back very quickly if the puck is lost. Its very consequently employed 1-3-1 defense does a good job at preventing the counters Aviator relies on heavily, and with signing Radoslav Klepakhov from Novaya Zemlya plus getting back the previously injured Denis Pedersen, they added a valuable asset to their offense. Prediction: Sjoedrhavn SHK wins 3-4.

Dynamo St. Andrei vs. SK Torpedo Pawlograd
This is not the most explosive derby of Russica (or the playoffs, see next one), but it comes close to it. Police and Military are in constant rivalry to each other on any possible stage, of course including hockey. Dynamo set off the season quite successfully, dropped back a bit in the second half and then managed to stabilise itself in the last rounds and win home ice for the Octos. Their strengths very clearly lay in offense and always did. Their defense relies almost entirely on two men, Dmitry Vasilyev and goalkeeper Vitali Nemanyov. Slava Vestrak, the iconic Dynamo coach going into his ninth season with the team, is known for inciting a fire in his teams that carry them through games and will be difficult to hold off for Torpedo. In offense, their arsenal is laid out through two top-class lines with Nuryzhin, Denisov, Elyagin, and crowned by the League topscorer Pavel Rasnikov.
SK Torpedo is a way more defensive side, who scored less than half the goals of Dynamo, but also conceded less than half of St. Andrei's number. This is going to be a one-sided series on the ice, but the result may look very different. A lot of it will depend on Alexei Varyshnin, the fourth-best goalkeeper of the SHS between the Torpedo pipes. The defense of Torpedo is lacking a true star but can bring on a collective effort with its impressive depth. The first lines of Dynamo will likely be able to push through Torpedo's top defenders, but the back lines will struggle hard against the back lines of Torpedo, given that a couple like Ruukanen/Treblin is only their third line when both of them were starters at Markka and Partizan before. In offense, the burden lies on Yurkin and Wallsson, who are both past their prime as scorers and mostly useful as grinders. Prediction: Dynamo St. Andrei wins 4-3

CASK Thorsborg vs. ASK Landsmark
If you are a Savojar hockey fan and didn't cheer when you saw this pairing, I don't believe you; except you are also a policeman. Seeing the two Army teams, the most heated rivalry in Savojarna, go against each other in the playoffs is a unique spectacle and will lead to a lot of energy on the ice (and occasionally in the stands, which is why the security forces hate it as much as we love it) and a fight to the metaphorical death. CASK seemed to be deep in trouble by the first quarter of the season, when the Thorsborger were dead last with only four points in 12 games. At this time, goalie Niklas Hoyman was the only player remotely living up to his name. But then, Calle Johanson resigned as coach and Ragnar Fridtjofsson replaced him. He employed a physical style that instantly kicked off and not only brought CASK to the playoffs, but even on home ice. The big guys in offense, centered around Fransson and Debreshev, rely on the assistance of sniper and captain Mikael Söderberg and the "Blue Line Cannon", Antti Toranen. In defense, Toranen and Riksborg can be counted on to clear the space around Hoyberg.
ASK Landsmark was far more constant and spent most of its time on or around the 10th rank they occupy now. ASK's goalie Nils Frederiksen was a reliable man for most of the season and conceded the second-fewest goals of the league behind Dynamo Sjoedrhavn's Malmström. But then again, Frederiksen faced few shots due to the strong ASK defense. What is impressive about ASK Landsmark is the number of shots they could block, which will make things not easy for the CASK side, given how many points they made thanks to point shots. It is hard to get screens, reflections or rebounds if someone blocks the way to the goal, and time will tell how good CASK can deal with that. But given how physically strong the team is, they can probably find a way. Things will get very heated here, especially after the controversial last derby, when CASK won 0-1 in Landsmark thanks to a goal the ASK team claimed to be goaltender interference. Prediction: CASK Thorsborg wins 4-3

International Pawlograd vs. Traktor St. Andrei
None of those really stands out as a likely contender for anything past Octos, but as they face each other, one of them will make it. The biggest argument for International is obviously its goalie Andrey Strakhov. He is experienced enough not to get stressed out by the circumstances of playoffs, and the fact he tops the saves percentage statistics clearly shows he is very skilled. The biggest argument against International is basically that he is the only thing that the team can offer. The offense's best known name is Mikhail Ivanov, whose main credentials are trashing a Pawlograd harbour bar in January. In terms of hockey, there is some talent in Akeson and Lidman (and Ivanov again) but none of those look like future franchise players. Nor do the top defenders, Evgeni Markov (who is already 35) and Sergey Perezhogin. The question here will be whether Strakhov can continue his run and pull International up to the Quarters.
For Traktor, the situation is quite similar. The first weeks were quite great for the, and the team was topping the league for some time. But then, like for their city rivals, things got gradually worse until they ended up just below the cut for home ice. Nobody from the team seems like they would stand out, but they generally have the potentially stronger back lines. Also, one has to see that the seeming lack of glory in Traktor's offense particularly comes from style rather than skill. Players like Ilya Zaryanov and Marko Rashin, both starters at Traktor, are known as workhorses rather than flashy posterboys. What is exceptional compared to International is the fourth line. Hans Jensen, Nemanya Perunov and Leonid Karenin can be expected to walk over the likes of Ulyachev, Wronsky and Elegin that will expect them at the other side, especially if Strakhov can't hold up after a long season. Prediction: Traktor St. Andrei wins 2-4.

Predictions of (a part of) our team for the final:
Victor Torstensson: Dynamo Sjoedrhavn 4-2 RHK Savojagrad
Linus Kristensen: PT Hovikkära 3-4 CASK Thorsborg
Antti Naumanen: Dynamo Sjoedrhavn 4-3 PT Hovikkära
Jessica Lindberg: Dynamo Sjoedrhavn 1-4 ESK Storevik
Boris Velyagin: RHK Savojagrad 4-2 Dynamo St. Andrei

SavojarSports.sj - inside reports from all Savojarna
Aviator follows footballers and becomes Savojars Vinge

Virkaja, SU - The hockey team of the Air Force? That's called Aviator Virkaja, no? Not anymore. Savojarna's air force has decided that they want to unite their formerly separated sports teams visually and brand-wise by renaming Aviator Virkaja to HK Savojars Vinge Virkaja, translating to "Wings of Savojarna Virkaja". Administratively, nothing changes and the two remain completely separate sections that are commonly governed by the Air Force Special Officer for Sports Antti Ruuskanen, who will remain relatively uninfluencial in both. However, for fans things change. Aviator loses its traditional wordmark jerseys that remained unchanged since 1984 and receives new jerseys from the next season onwards. For the first time since the 70s, they will feature a chest logo. This logo will be the new logo of HK SVV, a copy of the footballer's logo. The hockey team even decided to copy the footballer's championship star (which is integrated into the SVV logo) and was permitted to do so as the SHS doesn't give out championship signs of any sort. Today, logo (not surprising) and new jerseys were revealed by the team captain, Perttu Jovinen. And what does SVV's new branding look like?

Opinions were split. Fans of the team mostly rejected the rebranding at first, and sales of current Aviator jerseys skyrocketed. However, many neutral observers liked the move to more modernity reflected in the SVV jerseys and while some still opposed the rebranding in general, the tenor is mostly positive about its result. And the players themselves? Jovinen stated at the unveiling that he loves the new logo and what the designers from NDCS made from it. But he also said that he finds it a bit sad that the Aviator label has to go and that he'd have preferred to just run a redesign under the name of Aviator, due to the club's great history under that name. His teammate Petteri Niskänen tweeted: "Excited to see @SVV_Hockey's rebrand. Can't wait to play in the new sweater! #prideandpassion #SVVreveal", and followed up shortly after with: "Got shown my new SHS II sweater. It spells NISKANEN... shame for a Sumanen team". Indeed, the new font apparently doesn't permit any diacritics as the team shop only features shirts without them as well. Yuri Grigorenko already sent us an instagram pic of the backside of his new jersey, captioned with "Can't decide to like it yet. With big change comes big expectations though. Let's celebrate them with a title next year, guys! #SVVreveal". In our team, most do appreciate the change brought by the decisions but there was criticism of Aviator not being able to distance itself from the footballing side of the same name, who did the rebrand to SVV in 1993. What do you think? Let us know!

SHS Playoff Quarterfinals: The Preview

PT Hovikkära vs. HK Metall Jarnstad
Now, this is something we didn't expect. Both of those teams kind of surprised, but in a very different manner. Nobody really expected HK Metall to even have a chance against the season's dominator Dynamo Sjoedrhavn, but then, they eradicated the police team in five games. This kind of surprise is why we do have the playoffs, I guess. Metall dropped the first match in Sjoedrhavn as expected, but then they bounced back. It was a very tight series, which Jarnstad could only win by one goal in each and every match, but it was enough to beat the big favourite in the first round. Jarnstad surprised with a confident, aggressive play that prevented getting overrun by Dynamo and fought back successfully.
PT, on the other hand, was expected to win relatively easily over the surprise team of Chemie Frisks. But the Chemiker, who people thought may only win one or two home games thanks to their special home stadium, managed to push the Communist Party team to the edge of losing. After a victory in Hovikkära, the outsider than took a 4-1 lead at home, but gave it up to a 6-6 and subsequently lost in overtime. But with a tenacious defense, the team came back to beat Hovikkära twice with only a single, golden goal. Both teams played very defensively after the 6-7 in Frisks, and every other game in the series ended 1-0. Hovikkära only won one match in regulation, but it is likely that Jarnstad is a bit more to the liking of PT than the defensively sound, rough Chemie. Prediction: PT Hovikkära wins 4-2.

RHK Savojagrad vs. Thorsborgs Technik
Savojagrad struggled hard against Admiral Storevik, and this close series went into overtime or shoot-out an entire five times. In the end, it was RHK's strength in this discipline that decided the whole series, as the only two victories in regulation came to Admiral. The series also saw a lot of away victories (four out of seven games), but in the end, RHK Savojagrad managed somehow to qualify for the next round. The basic question about the Savojagrad team is still unanswered - it was never expected to see them in third position after the regular season, but is this what we should hold them up to, or is it the expectations we had before the season? This was nothing more than close qualification, after all.
Their opponents are Thorsborgs Technik, which is a great surprise in itself. Technik had been largely unfavoured against ESK Storevik, who seemed to be on their way to the semifinal or final, and who seems to be set on fighting for a title very soon. But this year, they had to suffer a brutal loss and learn the hard way. A team that opened with three straight victories seemed to take things too easy, and that's when Technik came back and ground ESK's young team into the ground. Winning two goalless away games in the shootout decided the series for Technik, who proved that they are a persistent side. It may prove ultimately decisive. Prediction: Thorsborgs Technik wins 3-4.

Aviator Virkaja vs. SK Torpedo Pawlograd
When we assumed that SHK may be one of the most dangerous underdogs in this year's Octos, we seemed to be proven right when they shut out Virkaja for 68 minutes in the first match. But then, the puck somehow found its way to the Sjoedrhavner's net. And in the away game, both teams managed to shut each other out yet again, but Aviator went through the shootout. It seemed to be a cathartic moment, which had led to the victory of Aviator Virkaja in the next round and eventually their win in the next two matches. No other team in the Octos managed to sweep their round, against a SHK team that was supposed to be one of the most likely upsets. It was, in short, a demonstration of tactical and technical power.
SK Torpedo played against a Dynamo St. Andrei team that was basically the favourite by virtue of its sixth place. The duel between a gread offense and a stable defense was as intense and appearingly one-sided as could be expected. But what surprised everyone was how low-scoring the two Dynamo victories were. SK Torpedo showed an entirely new quality, namely that they were suddenly not only good at preventing goals, but also at counter-attacking and pushing the boundaries of the enemy defense. The victory in the third game, when Dynamo led 3-2 after 40 minutes but Torpedo could turn the match around in the final period, seemed to have united the team and carried them through. The question is how they will hold up against a less offensive team. Prediction: Aviator Virkaja wins 4-2.

CASK Thorsborg vs. International Pawlograd
CASK won the derby series against ASK, thankfully without violence off the ice, through heavy defense. It was a series of defensive grinding and hard, hard work that was more than worthy of two teams with the backing of the Army. But then, the final two victories of Thorsborg came through a more high-scoring game. This was a sign that the Thorsborger are able to work their way through a strong defense like ASK's, and they will surely try to inflict their wrath on International just as well. CASK is not to be forgotten in the run to the finals if they keep playing on like this. Shall they win this series, everything is possible - and this is when CASK will become truly dangerous.
International Pawlograd's series against Traktor was relatively under everyone's radar despite the spectacular 6-4 victory of the Pawlogradski in the first round. Traktor could come back twice, but then received the decisive break in the sixth game. To be honest, I can barely see how this team shall hold up against the CASK side that is obviously on fire. Yes, Strakhov is playing a brilliant season, but there is no way his effort can pull the team through the quarters unless they substantially improve all together. Prediction: CASK Thorsborg wins 4-1.

SSA releases list and result of drafts

Sjoedrhavn, VH - In Sjoedrhavn, the SHS Entry Draft took place last night. Unlike in other leagues, the SHS does not rely entirely on the entry draft for players to join it. While the top teams, such as Dynamo, PT or CASK, do have their own academies and corresponding youth teams and mostly get their talent from there, others do get their young players mostly from the draft. Players who get drafted do instantly get a SHS contract as Savojarna does not operate with a minor league system. This explains the small number of players drafted. The SHS Draft is mainly a way for players who run out of age for the junior's leagues without receiving a contract or players who believe they should play professionally instead of another junior season. The third part are, for the first time, foreign players. In this year's draft, a total of 16 players from Ontorisa, Tomikosan and Neu Engollon took part. The way the draft works like is that the players can be drafted in an unlimited number of rounds. Teams may also pass on a round, in which case they completely exit the draft. If there are no players left or all teams leave the draft, the draft ends.

SavojarSports.sj - inside reports from all Savojarna
Igor Strelnikov has arrived in Novaya Russica!

Novaya Russica, RS - After Partizan had to give up Johan Bryzhnev to the Novozemlyan top team Torpedo Belushya Guba, the team was struggling even more, but replacement was promised by the Novozemlyans in the form of former NT right winger Igor Strelnikov. He played in Ficiscia, a nation which now has given up on international hockey, and wanted to return to the global scene in Novaya Russica. Returning he did with an impressive match last night against PT Hovikkära. A slight injury during the preparation for the season had made Strelnikov not particularly efficient in the first five rounds, and he went into the game against PT with two goals and four assists, located sixth on the scorer's table in a team which dearly lacks stability and depth. The Novozemlyan was even relegated to the second line after the rather disappointing display of his line in the 4-3 victory over Akademisk last week. However, after Mishkulin had been suspended following a check to the head of Atom HK Linder's Tarkku Viljanen, Strelnikov was moved up again and thanked the coach with an amazing display in Novaya Russica last night in a bitter but spectacular 4-6 loss to PT. The winger was involved in every goal of his team, scoring three of them himself, and now is the first chaser of top scorer Hjalmarsson.

The game had started out badly for Partizan, quickly running into trouble when PT started very aggressively and got multiple chances on the breakaway in consequence. The night took a bad turn for the home team after only seven minutes, when Aimo Varanen took the puck and got away from the defenders, snapping the puck past a chanceless Toryanov. The favourites added one more only minutes later on the powerplay when Axel Fredriksson deflected a shot by Vetrayev into the net. PT had sealed the deal by the time the second period was over with another goal by Fredriksson, a shot by Vetrayev from the blue line and a one-timer by 19 year old Andrey Dragunov. The final goal for PT was scored late in the third period on another counter, this time initiated by Koranen and completed successfully by Tuomo Runttanen.

However, there was plenty to cheer about for the supporters of Partizan when their team got on the board in the second period. It was Strelnikov who had opened the score on the powerplay, when the recently signed Ontorisan Rojas Tyamarik passed the puck very sharply through the PT box and found the tape of the Novozemlyan. It took nothing more than a short jab at the puck to lift it over the pad of Antti Suhonen, bringing Partizan to a 1-2 and thus back into the game. For a brief moment, they even seemed to have equalised on a deflection by Olausson, but the center had deflected the puck above the crossbar and it was no good goal. After that, PT had been waken up and as described above, managed to pull away 1-5 before Toryanov was replaced by Mikkelsen and Strelnikov made the crowd go crazy for two more times. First, Antonov sent the puck down to the forward who was eventually tripped from behind by Terjala, causing a penalty shot. Strelnikov's goal was an amazing display of technical skill as he dangled the puck around Suhonen one-handed and converted to 2-5.

In the third period, Rostorak passed the puck down the board to Strelnikov who pulled it around Vetrayev, shot it at Suhonen from a close angle and was denied. However, the puck rebounded onto the stick of Valeri Khalyarin, who pushed it into the open net to the 3-5. Following the final goal of Hovikkära, scored as described by Runttanen, Strelnikov ended up completing his hattrick at home. It was again a goal that originated in defense with Tyamarik, who had won back the puck from Jaskinen and passed it over to Källström. The winger found Khalyarin, who swung over to the left wing, switching positions with Strelnikov and passing the puck back through his legs to the Novozemlyan. Strelnikov received the puck at the hash marks and smacked it home high to the left corner, bringing Partizan back within two goals, but there was not enough time for them to get that one more goal in that would give the team the opportunity to equalise.

The 6-4 win of PT Hovikkära leaves them in sixth position only one point behind the leader, SVV. Savojars Vinge, Thorsborgs Technik, CASK and Akademisk still share the lead at nine points each, followed by a group of six teams with eight points each. For Partizan, the loss meant dropping below the cut to 17th place on five points, equal to 16th-ranked Traktor St. Andrei. In the other arenas of the country, SVV beat CASK 1-0 at home to take back the top of the table in a dramatic and physical game, eventually decided by a Shkuryanov rebound off a shot by Petteri Niskänen. Last year's champion International Pawlograd surprisingly had to go to a shootout to beat Atom HK Linder after 65 goalless minutes and now is placed 14th with six points. The most disappointing team so far had been ESK Storevik. The title candidate is only placed 18th, with four points. At this rate, ESK will possibly even struggle for the playoffs, and it seems that the risky decision of matching up the young Ansgarsson, Grigorenko and Malinsson, none of them older than 19, doesn't pay off. We are interested to see how ESK's coaching staff will react to this crisis.

MT socialist (mostly) island state - Cultural mixture of Scandinavia, Finland and Russia -Exports iron, steel, silver and wood - Low fantasy in terms of animal species - Sports-loving - 22.8 million inhabitants.

The adjective is Savojar; Savojarnan is not a word!
I am a student of (European) politics, ice hockey fan, left-wing communist bordering on anarchy, and European federalist. Enjoy!

Fabien de Saint-Pierre: He came to stay

Thorsborg, VH - One of the stars of current WJHC going on in Savojarna is, despite his team's early and unlucky out, Kebec's right winger Fabien de Saint-Pierre. The 20 year old Kebecois amazed us all with his play during the tournament, and apparently he also impressed some of the scouts of CASK Thorsborg. After his team's loss in Thorsborg, all he had to do was to switch stadia from Thor's Den to the General Harden and pull his skates back on, as CASK has signed Fabien de Saint-Pierre for four years, including the running season. The salary has not been communicated but is estimated from past knowledge to lie between 13'000 and 17'000 SAK per month, a usual salary for top players but slightly on the high side for a 20 year old. However, this is not a normal 20 year old as the leader of Kebec's junior team had shown over the past days. De Saint-Pierre will wear the jersey with the number 4, as we had seen during the presentation.

Coach Ragnar Fridtjofsson said that de Saint-Pierre was "a great addition to CASK and should help us to get more scoring done in our lower lines now, and to strengthen our top lines in the future. This is a guy who already shows leadership, with 20. We are very happy to have him on board". We assume that de Saint-Pierre will play in the next round against Dynamo St. Andrei. It seems unlikely that he can push through the first line of All-star Mikael Söderberg, Petter Fransson and Ivan Karashov in his first game. We expect to see him either in the second line alongside Gränlund and Debreshev or, if Fridtjofsson is hesitating to create such a young line (Gränlund is 23, Debreshev 24), we could imagine de Saint-Pierre paired up with Andrey Martinev and Marcus Antonsson. In this line, he'd likely receive less ice time but greater freedoms as Martinev in particular is a very resposible, defensive-minded center and Antonsson could take care of the physical work, leaving de Saint-Pierre to concentrate on scoring. Only time will tell which approach Fridtjofsson favours, but in this WJHC, he made a strong case that he can be entrusted with the Gränlund-Debreshev line, especially as the current right winger of the line is the 22 year old Morten Sandqvist who has been struggling lately.
