All events will be scored using the tennis module on xkoranate 0.3.3. All singles events will use the 3 set format; doubles at the Antillia Masters and Fresko Royal Nikolian Open will also use the 3 set format; all other doubles events will use the super-tiebreak format. RP bonus for these events will be cumulative throughout the event and will apply to all tournaments going on at the same time. RP bonus will account for 40% of the skill value. RPs will be graded fro 0 to 10 and scaled relatively to the highest cumulative RP bonus. Therefore, RPing will be extremely important during this series. Due to the fact that this is a fairly large undertaking, I may have assistant scorinators; these will be announced in advance of any event that will use them. Please ask any and all questions.

Vans Prep for Astytian Series in Paradise City

---

The NationStates Tennis Tour, one of the first international events the 'pality had ever competed in. Having debuted midway into last year's tournament at the Electrum Slam, the Blue-Reds fell out near the end of the tour, restricting them from reaching the finals in Kannap. Now, alive and ready, the Vans are ready to make their epic return to stardom in the Astyrian Series.

Unlike most of the other NSTT tournaments, the Astyrian Series is a near 2-month long experience of nonstop court fever across multiple tournaments held primarily in Costa de Ouro. The first event, the Griffincrest Paradise City Open, is a tier 2/3 tournament with 250 points on the line. Of the many particular power players of TQ, the country will be represented at Paradise City by Ty Kanelious, Jaxton Monty, Tony Tuk, and Paisley Brazzos in the singles, as well as Måns Zowzer, Timmy Yukon, Terry Rèben and Icy Mellows in the doubles.

Due to the high amount of popularity, the event will undergo qualifiers....the "gold star" of Qad tennis. But seriously, all but 1 of the Qads at PCO will endure 3 matches of pain and grit before the proper itself. Ty Kanelious, who was selected for PC via his rank (the lowest of the big 3 Qads), was granted automatic qualification into the proper due to his rankings internationally.

Jaxton Monty, the unofficial fourth big Qad player, was drawn into group 1, where they must face the Serbian Empire's Jade Oreskovic, Natanians and Nosts' Mihai Carolus Maro, and Ethane'a Edward Hinton. Our prediction: 3rd in group. Oreskovic and Hinton seem to be the big threats here, and maybe Monty just needs a bit more time to sink into the tour before he can really be embraced as a good player.

Paisley Brazzos was drawn into the 8th group, a group involving Max Aswick of New Gelderland, Patrice Lang of the Redvale, and Jane Smith of Tobiasia. Our prediction: 3rd place. Again, Aswick and Lang seem to be just one step ahead of Brazzos, which won't play out well for us in the long run.

Last, but not least, Tony Tuk will lead the Vans into battle in group 9. Probably the deadliest group, Tuk's opponents include Dominika Lisicki of Mattijana, Ethane's Edmund Wilkinson, and New Gelderlander, Noah Lennox. Our prediction: 4th. If it were someone else in the group, maybe a different result, but it's ultimately not gonna end well.

So the singles qualifiers will end horribly for TQ, but we still have the Kanelious and the doubles.

Måns Zowzer and Timmy Yukon will be making their way through group 4, pitting them against the Abraham/Géroux duo of Ndaku and the Ripaldi/Vrient duo of New Engollon. Our prediction: 2nd. Ripaldi and Vrient will prove to be the main adversary here, but we might be able to pull off some form of win.

As for Terry Rèben and Icy Mellows, their quest starts amongst group 7, which'll see them play Ethane's Livreson/Berry duo and Schottia's Pool/Del Collo duo. Our prediction: 2nd. Probably the most surprising, we believe Rèben and Mellows have reached the stage where they can be good enough to pick off one of the star teams. Are eyes will be mostly focused on their match against the Ethanians, though.

So there ya have it. The Qads' spectacular return to the courts will see off many athletes in Paradise City apart from Ty Kanelious and maybe a doubles team. Can the Vans prove us wrong and steamroll into the knockouts as a whole? Will they crumble under the pressure and leave Kanelious as the only player left for Qasden. New Season About To Kick Off In Paradise City

Mattijana's Tennis Players are back in action for the first time this year in the first installment of the Astyrian Series. The tier 3 event is not the most prestigious on the calender, but presents a good oportunity for some up-and coming players to get game time.

Dominika Lisicki plays her first tournament as the more experienced player in the draw, and is joined by 17 year old duo Sami Dominikanov and Maria Julenič, as well as the returning Izara Sava.

Qualifying Group 9: Dominika Lisicki

After a breakthrough first season, Dominika Lisicki will look to mount an attack on the world's top 100 this year. The number 1 seed in her qualifying group, she faces Edmund Wilkinson from Ethane, New Gelderland's Noah Lennox and rookie Qasdanian Tony Tuk.

Qualifying Group 2: Sami Dominikanov

17 year old Pulnik Academy Student Dominikanov is back after a more recent string of tournaments in the second half of the 2016 season. With rumoured personal problems behind him, he looks to be in improving form and will take on Harry Blackwood from New Gelderland, Claudius Ion Varro from Natanians and Nosts and Rob Canson from Tobiasia.

Qualifying Group 4: Maria Julenič

Maria Julenič, another 17 year old from the Pulnik academy, also enjoyed some good form at the back end of the previous season and has also moved past some apparent personal issues. She is seeded 4th in her group, but will be a tough opponent for Ofra bat Dekel of Judea, Anna Jones from Schottia and Ndaku's Maritania Cross.

Qualifying Group 7: Izara Sava

Following a half-year long break from tournament tennis, 20 year old Izara Sava is back to rejuvenate her career. After a break from her sport, the ex-Pulnik player is looking for match experience for on top of an intense training schedule. She will play veteren Cenian Louis Amada, Tobiasia's Danny Wallson and Rasmus Milik from Mercedini.

Doubles Qualifying Group 5: Kara Dragovič/Jelena Svitolina

Doubles specialists Dragovič and Svitolina also took a break from the NSTT after the AO Open in Krytenia, but are back to try and build on the success of Slazić/Basič and Kampl/ Lisicki, the best ranked players in either the singles or doubles rankings. They will face Livnat bat Avram/Arieh ben Daniyyek from Judea and Max Aswick/ Noah Lennox from New Gelderland.

New Year, New Digs

PARADISE CITY - As stated before, a handfull of Ndakene professional tennis players have made a few changes in their game in order to make a name of themselves. More specifically, to be champions.

Players like Odell Bristol, a 23-year-old ATP rookie who has been doing his absolute best to make the best for himself as a tennis player ever since he was promoted onto the ATP from the African Junior Tennis Association (AJTA). His last tournament was the Merseyshore Masters, where he was unable to qualify for the main rounds due to an unfortunate loss against Tommy West of New Gelderland. He's grouped in section 3 of the qualifying draw with Ofir bat Paz of Judah, Molly Rhonic of Mercedini, and Ioana Amúlio Constantinescu of Natanians and Nosts. According to Bristol on Tweeter, he said a new PowerStroke racquet, coach, and haircut will motivate him to keep moving on, despite whatever circumstance.

In group 4 is Maritania Cross from the Stanleyville Tennis Academy in Stanleyville, Madesu, Ndaku. On Tweeter, Cross stated her hopes for a successful 2111 season. Her last tournament was the Merseyshore Masters, and she too didn't qualify for the main draws after her loss against Samuel Hartnell from Ethane. She's grouped with Ofra bat Dekel of Judah, Anna Jones of Schottia, and Maria Julenic of Mattijana.

20-year-old Dani Mateus, from the United Human Tennis Association (UHTA) Ndakene campus in Fumbwana, Madesu, Ndaku, has affirmed her new year tennis revolution as she signed a contract with LaCroc, saying that the new looks and new feelings while hitting around the world will be a "change bound for potential greatness". She too played in the Merseyshore Masters and lost in the second round against Estela Fenton-Millington of the Eastfield Lodge. She's grouped with Vladimir Ivanovic Ivanov of the Serbian Empire, Elke Hartung of Neu Engollon, and Georgette Cannon of the Eastfield Lodge.

21-year-old tennis sensation Lou Herriot is back at it again but all-new in the 2111 season as he too affirmed a change in coaching and Herriot Tennis staff. According to social media, he stated that a new staff, his girlfriend, and his family are his main motivations to keep playing. Just like the others, Herriot played but did not qualify for the Merseyshore Masters, when he won his match at the last moment. Herriot is grouped with Rog Ion Tralito of Natanians and Nosts, Abigail Stevens of Ethane, and Emma au Fuse de Maris of Redvale in group 10.

Doubles duo Manasses Henryson and Itri Rider, both from the United Human Tennis Association in Fumbwana, Madesu, Ndaku, aim high for nothing but a better season than 2110. According to Rider, there were many, many times they had opportunities to move on after extensive and physical matches, but mistakes were prevalent. Rider and Henryson, during the time off, took some time to focus on finishing close points and whatnot. They anticipate for a good year as well and are grouped with Marisa Celeste Frieri/Gisela Stefanovic of Serbia, and Patrick Sintarnov/Harry Rymin of Mercedini in group 2.

Doubles sensation Furaha Abraham and Brooke Géroux are beginning a new chapter, as they have put it, and forecast season of success, as long as they are putting the required work for it. According to social media, both Géroux and Abraham commenced a different diet, and equipped new Advantage racquets, not to leave out new serves and plays for increased chances. They are grouped with Måns Zowzer/Timmy Yukon of Qasden and Dominic Ripaldi/Marco Vrient of Neu Engollon.

It's that time again, when the sports channels are all showing tennis and the nation's second most popular individual sport takes stage for a week or two while a major tournament holds the attention of the country. Most of the time, everyone's attention is on a domestic tournament. This time isn't like many of the others, though. After an initial attempt at entering international competition was made at request of the Vali Church, whose priests supposedly received the request straight from the gods, the country's leadership has decided that it's time to send more than a ragtag group of church slaves. Of course, the slaves are still there, but there's also some professionals mixed in to keep us competitive when competing against other professionals. The slave thing went over fine over here, but was pretty controversial abroad in countries where slavery is illegal, but it is what it is. This model of mixing in professionals with servants of the church should both boost the popularity of the team and the competitiveness.

With that being said, our best player in the upcoming series of tournaments, the Astyrian Series, is still a slave. I refer, of course, to Emma au Fuse de Maris, the favorite slave of Theocrat Jara Fuse's son Dago. Fuse de Maris is one of the few slaves to have a good career, and has much domestic success in the women's game. She's also been consistently decent internationally, even when others around her have only shown flashes of brilliance before dropping their performance levels. She's not the most technically skilled player, but there's few players that can beat her in a footrace. Her excellent stamina and speed possibly comes from the magical training that many tennis players in Redvale undergo, and strangely enough, that style of training would make her a better international player than a domestic player, because it only counts as an edge against opposition who haven't trained in the same way.

The other name you should know is Patrice Lang. The 21 year old is the latest Maris Open men's singles champion, and for good reason. If Emma au Fuse de Maris wins through fitness and stamina, Lang is the opposite. He's not a magic user, and thus his training revolves more around improving his technical skills and beating his opponents that way. Born in Ravenfeld, an often forgotten city that's overshadowed by Markham, Glenham, and Red Valley, Lang didn't come from much but had a meteoric rise in the past few years because of his domestic success. He has a beautiful serve that's capable of hitting aces, and a pretty good finesse game too. His main challenge will be getting into good positions and making sure he doesn't have to run too far to reach the ball, because even for his stardom and success, Lang isn't the quickest player on his feet. Still, he's one of the top three players from Redvale that's entering the tournament, and should be a must watch player for anyone trying to decide which matches to pick.

Rounding out the top three is Kate Esposito, who has an interesting story. She was born to a wealthy family in Janford, and wanted to play association football, but she never grew past five feet. Being far too short to play competitively, she went into tennis instead, and worked on her craft as a high schooler and then opted to skip college to chase a professional career. Also 21 years old, she had her breakout year last year too, right when she was considering giving up and going into business. She may have a small stature, and there's a risk of balls bouncing over her head sometimes, but she plays with a lot of heart and hustle and it will be interesting to see if her high motor and insane level of hustle will be enough to make up for her lack of athleticism against better competition. Her domestic trophy cabinet is empty, but she did play well enough to get the attention of Emma au Fuse de Maris, who picked her as her doubles partner.

Of course, there's other noteworthy players too, but if you need to know who the three must watch players are, it's the ones listed above. Here at Vibes, we'll be watching every match and we'll give you updates on all of them, and on how the players are doing on and off of the court. We wish the best to all of our nation's players, and hope that in the latest tournament, we can put up a better showing than last time. But who knows what's going to happen? Most of the team this time is unproven, so no matter whether they win or they lose, it'll at least be exciting to see how they all pan out.

The Tale of Two Marisas

One of them is a Cenian who has only made rare appearances in the NSTT in recent tournaments. The other is a Serbian tournament grinder who has more NSTT tournament appearances than the Cenian, but a much lower rank. However, both are enjoying the fact they don't need to fight through group play at the Astyrian Series. This is a fairly unfamiliar scenario for Marisa Celeste Frieri to be in. In fact, she's never gotten one of these in the NSTT until the first tournament in her second season in the NSTT. Paradise City seems to be a paradise for those seeking to make a name for themselves when Cracik Almeronovic and Mattias Doerwald are seeded and the likes of Marisa Celeste Frieri and Aljaz Isaac in the locked in positions within the top 21 in entries for this tournament here. As in Frieri's barely a top 100 player in the overall rankings yet she's here in locked in status. It's definitely a tournament for the grinders and the novice to make a name for themselves. Unfortunately, it also means one is merely defeating at best a top fifteen player or a career grinder.

Griffencrest Paradise City Open: Day 2 Qualifiers

PARADISE CITY - After a sunny and absolutely gorgeous day at the Griffencrest Paradise City Open, we saw many qualify and fall, and among those who qualified, fortunately, some were Ndakene. On his second day here in Paradice City, 23-year-old Odell Bristol took on Ofir bat Paz of Judah in straight sensational sets. Bristol never faced any break points and maintained solid and constant play against the Judean, thus opening doors for the main draw after a 6-4, 6-2 win.

In group 4 was Maritania Cross taking on Maria Julenic of Mattijana in a tough and physical three-set match. Cross had a difficult time catching her rhythm in the match early on which enabled Julenic to take advantage of the accumulating unforced errors generated by Cross. This eventually allowed Julenic to claim a 1-6 first set. In the second set, Cross showed that she was able to find a rhythm and stick with it throughout the match, until the end. Attacking second serves from Julenic and a more aggressive approach towards her groundstrokes allowed Cross to stay alive in the match with a 6-2 claim of the second set. The 2 ladies fought hard and fought well in the third set, which eventually leads to a third set tie-break. Cross pulled off a few impressive winners against the Mattijanan, but Julenic continued to hold on; both were on-serve. The nerves were to blame for the double fault and unforced error that caused Cross to lose a 1-6, 6-2, 6-7 match and an opportunity to move onto the main draws.

Over in group 5 was 20-year-old Ndakene sensation Dani Mateus taking on Vladimir Ivanovic Ivanov of Serbia in a truly nail-biting and entertaining three sets. The first set lasted an hour and 12 minutes as the Ndakene and the Serbian demonstrated quality and power tennis. However, a few winners and aces from Ivanov allowed him to finish the opening battle. In the second set, Mateus proved that she still had a lot of fuel and energy stored, as she powered her way through Ivanov's hard-to-catch serves with a 6-4 claim over the second set with a break. Both continued their physical and truly breathtaking tennis through the final set, where at 4-all, Ivanov found a way to break Mateus and finish it with a 6-7, 6-4, 4-6 victory.

In group 10 one of Ndaku's most notable and entertaining-to-watch players Lou Herriot stormed to the main draws after his straight win against Emma au Fuse de Maris of Redvale. Herriot did not show any struggle or difficulty maintaining his game, serve, and composure all throughout the match, as he lost only one break of serve against de Maris. Both fought well and hard in the first set, but it was Herriot in the end at 5-all who finished it with a claim. Herriot played slightly more aggressive in the second set, which eventually set him up for a 7-5, 6-2 victory, allowing him to claim a spot in the main draw.

In the doubles' draw, in group 2, were Ndakene men's duo Manasses Henryson and Itri Rider taking on Marisa Celeste Frieri and Gisela Stefanovic in a truly spectacular three-setter. Both sides of the court demonstrated quality volleying and rallying, making the competition for the first set fierce and intense. In the end, a few impressive volleys from the Serbians allowed them to break Rider/Henryson and claim the first set with a 5-7 score. In the second set, the Ndakene duo fought back early on to hold onto a break to eventually claim 6-4. The third set lasted an hour and 24 minutes as the Serbians and Ndakenes fought very hard and showed no sign of backing down, as their doubles partners motivated each other all throughout. At 9-all, finally, the Serbians were able to break the Ndakenes which enabled them to claim a 5-7, 6-4, 9-11 victory after 3 hours and 34 minutes.

In group 4 were Furaha Abraham and Brooke Géroux taking on Måns Zowzer and Timmy Yukon from Qasden in an unfortunate straight loss. It's not that Abraham and Géroux played terribly or poorly; rather, the Qasdonians simply dominated the net and the court. Their dominance was constant throughout the whole match, which made it difficult for Abraham and Géroux to find a good rhythm, thus allowing a 2-6, 2-6 victory over the Ndakenes.

Edward Hinton

Had a good first match and charged straight to the top of the group after their first game victory against Mihai Carolus Maro. Hinton seemed to hold the upper-hand throughout the two sets, only allowing Mihai small breaks in each of the sets to win 2 games each set. Maro really posed no threat to Hinton, who seems to be developing into a strong, resolute player and hopefully will be a key player for Ethane in the future.

His second game proved to be a little more disappointing, although he did manage to pull the game to three sets before collapsing. After destroying Jaxton Monty of Qasden in the first set 6 games to 1, Monty was able to get the upper hand for the second game and just pulled a narrow 5 games to 7 victory. However, it appeared that from a fall or something - no one is sure - Hinton managed to injure his foot slightly, which resulted in him struggling to play effectively in the final set, meaning Monty was able to walk the set 6 games to 0 and take the match win. However, Hinton is just about holding onto second place in the group, and it will be up to his final game to see whether he qualifies or not.

Edmund Wilkinson

Wilkinson started off strong but seemed to tail off in his first match, before picking it up at the end to win against Noah Lennox of New Gelderland. After dominating the first set 6 games to 1, Wilkinson was unable to repeat the same sort of play in the second set, losing to Lennox 3 games to six. It all came down to the final set, and Wilkinson was able to replicate his performance of the first set, reflected in the same scoreline.

He also lost his second game, this one to Dominika Lisicki of Mattijana, in a disappointing 2 sets. Wilkinson was unable to get momentum going in the first set, and ended up losing 6 games to 2. Wilkinson did try to pick up his plays for the second set, but he was unable to do quite enough, pushing Lisicki to a 6 games to 4 win against him. However, he still remains in second in his group in what will be a tight fight.

Abigail Stevens

Stevens showed she had some fight in here match against Emma au Fuse de Maris of The Redvale, but she didn't have enough to win the match. She did manage to tot up 4 games in each of the two sets against Maris, but her opposition was able to pip her to the win each and every time, with Maris winning both sets 6 games to 4, and winning the match overall.

Her second game didn't prove to be any better for her, expect that she managed to win a set against Rog Ion Tralito. After practically being demolished in the first set 6 games to 2, she rallied back in the second set to win 6 games to Tralito's 4 games. It all came down to the final, third set, and while Stevens did try to bring her game, she was only able to win 3 games to Tralito's six games.

Benjamin Thompson

Thompson was completely destroyed in his first game against Karina Gerard. Whether there was something wrong with his leg - as he did appear to be limping at points - or the climate - it could be too hot or too cold for him - we shall not know, but what we do know is he was completely wrecked. After a complete whitewash in the first set, Thompson unable to win a single game, he was able to prevent that occurring in the second set by winning 1 game to Gerard's 6.

His second game brought no respite to his poor performances, with Keeley Sinai of Eastfield Lodge beating Thompson in 2 sets, albeit much closer than Thompson's first game. He was unable to offer too much of a fight in his first set, losing the set 6 games to three, but then came out and rallied in the second set. However, he was unable to do much, and ended up losing the set 7 games to 5.

Niamh Livreson/Samanthe Berry

The doubles pair were able to beat Luke Pool and Mike Del Collo of Scottia across three sets. The Ethanese players were just able to win the first set, picking up the set win 7 games to 6. However, the doubles pair from Schottia able to fightback and win the second set 7 games to 6, leaving it to the final set. However, the Ethanese doubles pair were able to beat the Schottians 10 games to 6.

However, they were unable to win their second match against Terry Rèben and Icy Mellows of Qasden. The players from Qasden dominated the Ethanese doubles pairing, beating them in the first set 6 games to 3 before knocking it down further in the second set which the Qasden partnership won 6 games to 1, granting them the win across the 2 sets.

Adam Bennet/Thomas Winston

They have only played 1 game so far, on day 2 of the qualification rounds, and the Ethanese players were just able to scrape a win against the players from Redvale, Emma au Fuse de Maris and Kate Esposito. A narrow first set victory of 7 games to 6 set the precedent for this match, which wasn't quite met with the same passion in the second set by the Ethanese, who lost 6 games to 2. However, the two of them rallied together for the final set, just about pipping the players from The Redvale to the match win, with 10 games won to 8 games lost.

Pulnik Academy, Central Mattijana

The Christmas and New Year's break in Mattijana coincides with the end of season break of the NSTT, yet three days after Christmas, the courts of the Pulnik Sports Academy were once again occupied. Following a promising, but fairly uneventful string of tournaments at the end of the 2016 season, Maria Julenic and Sami Dominikanov were back to practice and perfect their technique before the start of the New Season, whilst they were joined by a new, yet strangely familiar face.

20 year old Izara Sava was a student at Pulnik, before leaving to move into the domestic Mattijanan tennis leagues, where she began to make some progress up the national rankings. As Mattijana began to enter the NSTT, she was largely overlooked, but managed to get 3 tournament call-ups in the slams. With Mattijanan players now finding a way into the world's top 100 and beyond, Sava was given a slightly surprising call-up to compete in not just the slam at the Astyrian series, but the minor tournaments as well, a more likely source of ranking points.
Izara had stayed in good shape, remaining in the domestic leagues, but had been asked to link up with the coaching team at Pulnik before the series to receive some more NSTT-tuned advice.

"Ah...it's good to be back..." She said to Maria. "Is Martin Stefanovic still here?"

"yeah" replied Maria. "Was he as consistently grumpy when you were here?"

"Oh yes. Especially about my uniform. He had standards I suppose." Izara smiled.

"I guess. Some of the Hockey players would be murdered if he got near to them though..."

"It was like that when I was there. None of the subject teachers seemed not to mind though, especially when it got hot in the summer. I think they were too busy being pissed off at people getting taken out of lessons."

"Tell me about it... Were you a short and fat person or a long and thin person?"

"Haha. It started off short and fat and seemed to get longer as I went through. Top button always undone though. I could never quite cope with the strangulation, especially with the heat sometimes."

"Me neither..."


The reminiscing came to an abrupt end as Alex Dimitrov, the assistant head of Mattijanan tennis walked onto the court.
"Hello everyone. Hope you all had a great Christmas and sorry to have you back so soon, but you might be aware that we've published some rather ambitious targets to fulfil and that's not gonna happen without some hard work and preparation. I'm going to get involved with some of the training this morning for you three. We'll have it on a bit of cycle and then we can play out some points. Maria, I want you over with Marko, Sami with Lara and I'll take you, Izara. Thanks everyone."

"Izara picked herself up. Alex was a decent guy, although his qualities as a coach were somewhat unproven. Still, she would see."

"What have you been up to lately?" He asked.

"Some of the national competitions. I'm sure you've been keeping an eye on the results."

"We have indeed" replied Alex, as he lifted the ball over the net. "The truth is we need younger players now. We've got the ball rolling with regard to Mattijanan tennis, if you'll excuse the pun. People like me managed to get things going, but we're too old to keep them going. We need people with talent who can move up the rankings quickly and stay there for a bit, at least until other players do the same. We're thinking about things in the long run, but that's sort of essential in this kind of area."

"I see. Why me though?"

"I think you're good enough. You've got some experience around the whole team and you've still got time on your side. Aside from these two, you're the perfect candidate to continue are legacy, not to mention the fact that you're also familiar with Pulnik and all that brings with it."

"Youth is handy I suppose."

"It is whilst you have it. I'm past it, but hopefully my coaching isn't. I'll do everything possible to get you up there and fighting. Don't you worry."

Izara smiled. Mattijanan tennis was a fast-growing project and one that she felt glad she could be a part of.

[Neu Engollon]

Apologies for my lack of RP. NS is soaked up by AVBF beer fest and rugby 7s lately, but I thought I'd make an effort to try to knock out something and explain the new players and some absences. Thanks.

"Neu Engollon and our international viewers, good evening and welcome to Courtside Central on NETV Sports 19. I'm your host, Lizbet Rittenhaus. We’re live at the Astyrian Series, a region that Neu Engollon has had some various dealings with, but we'll get to that...The NETC crew is back at it in the first NSTT series of the new 2017 season, and it seems that we haven't completely turned over a new leaf just yet. I'm referring to the mixed results performance of our qualifying players and doubles teams over the last couple match days.

One bright spot has been the international debut of Karina Gerard, the younger sister of high seeded Marla. One of the latest NETC players to get the nod to move up to the international circuit, Karina has, like her sister, proved to be a young prodigy and very capable of holding her own against more veteran NSTT players in some unofficial tournaments and matches over the last year. Karina, again, like her sister a couple years previous, is the beacon for what Neu Engollian tennis can be in its aspirations to be a powerhouse tennis nation like some of the other famous dynasties such as Ethane, Electrum, Ceni and Schottia. So far, she's lost one match to the Redvale's Nik au Ignaa and it wasn't a close match. Ignaa will be one to watch in the coming months and tournaments. Overall though, Karina has been performing as hoped and expected by many domestic and international fans. Skeptics say that the fandom is just transposing from Marla over to the same sister, but Karina is proving in her own right that she is a power to be dealt with in the new year.

Elke Hartung has struggled in her return to NSTT play and her last match is an example of that, losing a two set match to Ndaku's Dani Mateus.

Notably missing from the NETC roster this year is Theo Rahl, who made some strides in his rookie year this past season. Unfortunately, due to a mix up with waivers, Rahl was unable to get out of his commitment to the Neu Engollian Defense Forces and was called up for mandatory service, despite protests lodged by the NETC on his behalf. Currently, word has it that he's serving with one of the Alpen Regiments on our nation's borders. We're proud of you, Theo!

Let's face it. Neu Engollian players have never been very strong on the doubles circuit, despite being anchored by strong veteran players, and we see that being played out once again for the 2017 Astyrian Series. Both the Vrient/Ripaldi and Semmes/Zovic teams have taken some rough blows and we probably won't be seeing them advance on past the qualifiers.

We'll take a look at what the next stages of the tournament are looking like and who the NETC will likely face in upcoming matches, as well as the backdrop of mixed relations that Neu Engollon has with Astyria after this sponsor break. Stay tuned to Courtside Central here on NETV Sports 19..."

Esposito and Nik shine, Lang falls, and first round looms

The next tournament for the tennis players of the Redvale is here, and it was a pretty exciting first few days of action in the Paradise City Open. It was an underwhelming performance from some of the Redvali players, but not all of them did too badly. Kate Esposito exceeded everyone’s expectations to qualify for the next round, while Patrice Lang’s weaknesses were exposed during a disappointing qualifying. On the doubles stage, Esposito and Emma au Fuse de Maris almost qualified but fell just short in the end. Nik au Ignaa was expected to make it into the next round, and he did, though he scared his fans with some inconsistent performances in the process despite finishing a perfect three for three in wins.

First, let’s get to Patrice Lang. Our advanced metric that measures the overall skill of a tennis player, the ACE metric, rated Lang with a score of one hundred and twelve, with three hundred being the best possible number. A score of one hundred and twelve represents a mediocre performance that wasn’t entirely bad but wasn’t at all impressive. Basically, a middle of the road, forgettable performance that won’t be winning the young star many fans. One thing the metric values is distance moved, as players that cover more ground win more often, and that was Lang’s worst category. Out of all of the Redvali players, Lang covered the least ground in his singles matches.

Regardless, his performance wasn’t terrible because he made up for it with good serves, a high number of aces, and good finesse. That wasn’t nearly enough to help him qualify, though, despite his poor stamina and bad distance covered numbers. If Lang wants to improve, he’ll have to spend his offseason working hard on those attributes. It’s been suggested by many that he fires his coach and starts working with the same camp that Kate Esposito, Nik au Ignaa, and Emma au Fuse de Maris are a part of, Roja Leo Tennis. Roja Leo is known for having the top fitness coaches in Redvale, and is notably run by the same people that operate the Roja Leo racing team. Lang himself spoke a bit after his final loss, the one that eliminated him from contention in the tournament: “I obviously have some weaknesses that I need to work on, and I’m not going to commit to any moves yet. I’m going to keep my options open in the offseason and I don’t know which camp I’m going to be training with yet. Roja Leo has been brought up, so has Chang Tennis. I’ve been working independently and I’ve had success but maybe it’s time I find a team… I don’t know. We’ll see.”

While Lang disappointed, Kate Esposito did the opposite. The tiny twenty one year old came out of her qualifying group on top to secure her place in the next round. She won her last match two sets to none, and finished the group stage with an ACE metric of two hundred and fifty eight, an incredibly high score for a newcomer that’s young and relatively inexperienced. She was the opposite of Lang in play style, hustling around the court and covering over her technical failures with plenty of energy and grit. She’s not a usual tennis player, because she focuses mainly on fitness in her training rather than technique, but her unusual and gritty style has paid off for her. This is what she said in a press conference: “I’m happy with where I am right now, style wise. I know it’s not how everyone plays, but it’s how I play, and I’ve had success this way. I’ve heard the word superstar thrown around and I don’t know if I’m there yet, but I’ll try to represent the country well in the real tournament.”

She’ll represent the country well indeed if she keeps up her good performances. The first round is coming up very soon, and the country’s hopes will rest on her shoulders as well as the shoulders of Nik au Ignaa. Hopefully in a tournament mostly played by beginners and others who haven’t been around the game for too long, these two beginners can rise above their peers.

The pairing of Marisa Celeste Frieri and Gisela Stefanovic have made it into the main tournament here in Paradise City in both singles and doubles. This hasn't been a common occurrence and will likely be a significant change from the previous season's efforts. There's a lot of mystery as to why this has happened here. What has changed with the two players? The answer is that they've decided that white isn't all that it is cut out to be and have discovered a brand that makes them able to be themselves. Not surprisingly, Marisa has been seen in a number made by an Italian designer that seems to be almost as well suited for clubbing as for the courts with the black and gold dress. Safe to say that there's a new sponsor involved in this or an old sponsor's drab fashion clause has allowed for more stylish and less drab outfits. Some would accuse the two of being distracting, but the only distraction I see is the way that they pair tights with dresses to be more stylish.

The ACE Metric: Scourge or Blessing

There's been a new advanced metric circulating in Redvali sports media and we've discovered the formula. The interesting aspect is that it would rate Jade Oreskovic as significantly better than Vladimir Ivanovic Ivanov over the past few matches. The reason involves the potent serve of Vladimir Ivanovic Ivanov reduces his distance moved as aces don't count much for movement. Oreskovic despite her poor win rate is moving around significantly more on the court. The values for both sit in the middling range with Oreskovic producing a 184 out of 300, this would be the definition of middling although the formula would say that she's actually good. The weakest area would be her serve is slow enough that aces are exceedingly rare to the point she can go enter matches without one.

Ivanovic Ivanov on the other hand produced a 176, not far behind but the lack of movement produced by accumulating a very high number of aces in a match reduces movement. The eye test tells you Oreskovic is definitely more well rounded, but Jade's biggest weakness is a major factor to why she can run some players into exhaustion. At the same time, if she can't return enough serves then she's kind of sunk by the fact she can't overpower her adversaries. Ivanovic Ivanov might have one of the most dynamic serves as to be amongst the NSTT's fastest serves. Over reliance on the powerful serve along with nagging injuries seems to reduce his range to the point that everything else may be better, but the metrics favor someone who went 1-2 in group play over the man who overpowers opponents with an elite serve. Maybe it is because dependence on one tool is less likely to result in reliable wins against the elite when compared to more well rounded players such as Marisa Celeste Frieri, Jade Oreskovic, or Gisela Stefanovic.

Gisela Stefanovic has pulled off a victory of the #1 seed Simcha bat Dor. In addition, no Cenians remain in the Griffencrest Paradise City Open. This is a very unusual outcome in the singles bracket. I have never seen a tournament where none of the final 8 players in singles are Cenian in the NSTT. Secondly, Gisela Stefanovic has become the first Serbian to reach the quarterfinals in a NSTT event and has usurped the ranking of Marisa Celeste Frieri as best player in the nation at this time. A victory over Cracik Almeronovic would certainly confirm such as Marisa lost to him in the opening round of tournament play here. Gisela also has found success in her doubles pursuit as well. But the battles here will likely end soon unless a miracle win over a Cenian occurs. Not even a single Serbian tennis player has had a victory against a Cenian in the NSTT.

Lisicki Marches On in Paradise City

Dominika Lisicki remains the soul representative in the singles draw, but managed to advance into the last 8 of the tournament with an impressive straight sets victory over Cenian Noah Damaris.

The Mattijanan number 3, and the highest-ranked Mattijanan player sent to the first tournament of the Astyrian series, started strongly, holding her initial service game to 15 before asking serious questions of the Cenian's nerve with deep returns and powerful groundstrokes.
On that occasion, she had yet to get her eye in, powering wide at advantage Damaris to hand over the game. However her serve remained impressive, not handing Damaris much of a sniff, but after a shakey start, her opponent also upped his game to keep Lisicki well at bay for the best-part of the opening stages.

At 4-4 however, the Mattijanan's decision to serve first was justified as another straightforward service game put the pressure on Damaris, who began to show the signs of nerves he had also exhibited during the first service game, and this time, Lisicki took full advantage, smacking away the short balls and then forcing a wild passing shot on match point, to take the first set.

Lisicki continued the onslaught in the second set, but with little resistance, sealing the match with a winner into the top corner of the court.

With that match wrapped up 6-4, 6-1, Lisicki will move into the last 8 with hopes of being the first Mattijanan to reach the semi-finals of a NSTT tournament, and maybe even further, particularly with number 1 seed Simcha bat Dor knocked out by Gisela Stefanovic of the Serbian Empire.

About a score days ago, the Qads were re-wiring their rackets for the new season starting in Astyria. Of the many different tournaments set up in the first series of the NSTT, the first was and has been one of the most successful runs by Blue-Red Tennis.

The Griffincrest Paradise City Open is most notably known as the inaugural tournament of the new year's tour, which featured the more middle-class players of many nations. Qasden's delegates featured Jaxton Monty, Paisley Brazzos, Tony Tuk, Ty Kanelious, Terry Rèben, Icy Mellows, Måns Zowzer, and Timmy Yukon, all heading into PC for first blood.

After qualifiers and every round up to the R16, 5 Qads still remain in the tournament, increasing favors of a possible semis appearance, the first of any kind for TQ in NSTT. Ty Kanelious, the anchorVan of Paradise City, automatically bypassed qualifying via his rankings from last year. Once the time had come, Ty went to work. In the round of 32, Kanelious faced Harry Blackwood, a decent player from New Gelderland. The first set was clinched by a 6-4 margin, while the second set featured a pleasing 6-1 sight.

In the Round of Sixteen, Tyler faced Ellela Thotan, a new-ish face in NSTT from the tennis giant, Ceni. The first couple of matches were generally close, with the first set going to 13 matches before being won by Ty in a narrow final match. Thotan, of course, attempted to retaliate the initial defeat by taking an early lead in the second set. That was until Kanelious came back and ended the Cenian with a 6-3 slamming for the clean sweep. Ty's victory will extend our singles campaign into the quarterfinals, where it'll be up to him to achieve greatness as he faces one of the most determined opponents yet, Dominika Lisicki. The Mattijanan cracked down on Schottia's Alba Baxter in straight sets while taking down Cenian Noah Damaris, also in straight sets. Can Kanelious defeat Lisicki? We're about to find out.

Terry Rèben and Icy Mellows surprised many after topping their group in the qualifiers. Despite making the R16, the duo had a new problem arising. Their first match was against the incredibly skilled team known as Leo Garry and Elizabeth Quehall of Britonisea. The first set of games were not pretty to watch at all, with Leo and Liz slamming the Qads, 6-2. The following set seemed a lot closer match. The Vans were a lot more collected this time around and played at their pace. At 4-4, they jumped ahead to make the ultimate stretch towards an equalizer. In the last two games, they did just that, and claimed a 6-4 second set. Radios, televisions, bars, cinemas, they all tuned in to witness the incredible third set show. The first 3 games went to the Brits, then 3 went to the Qads, then the Brits, then the Qads, and the Qads, and. the. Qads. When the board read 6-4, many people were already celebrating, only to see the resuming for 4 more games. What was sure to be the Brits' momentous comeback was bluntly stolen by Rèben and Mellows, as they swoop off the last few games for a 10-4 third set upending of Garry and Quehall. The surprise early knockout of the Brits just so happens to throw the duo into yet another challenging setup against the Dovans of Ceni, if they weren't already strong enough alone.

Finally, Måns Zowzer and Timmy Yukon make up the last few players of Qasden whom are still alive somehow. After yet another shockingly well qualifiers performance, Zowzer and Yukon were matched up versus Giorgio Irani and Clementina Travers of Eastfield Lodge. Twin sets made the match as both the first and second set had the same score. In the first set, Måns and Timmy got off to a nice 2-0 lead before being chased down by the Eastfielders. It then became 3-2 Z/Y within just a quick matter of time. With the Lodgers hot and ready, their power nearly surpressed the Qads in the sixth game. However, TQ hung on to win the set 6-2. As predescribed as "twin sets", you don't exactly have to be a genius to figure out the second set. M&T shot to an early lead before a comeback by Eastfield and a storming victory to seal the deal.

With Kanelious vs. Lisicki, Rèben/Mellows vs. the Dovans, and Zowzer/Yukon vs. Penderyn/Blackwood in the quarters, can the qads make their first ever appearance in the semis? Trouble in Paradise

The results have been disappointing today, but given the circumstances there are no regrets. Except the idea of Gisela Stefanovic thinking about playing doubles and singles that is. "I was running on little more than adrenaline to advance this far in the Paradise City tournament. The idea of playing doubles and singles regularly is probably a bad idea in hindsight as there's only so much energy I have and maybe I can go further if I focused just on singles," Gisela admitted in her interview with us. With the idea of Serbian doubles likely being made of players who can't make it in singles going forward, this could result in more players at tournaments. Maybe not in the Astyrian Series, but further into the season where dedicated singles and doubles efforts will occur.

Griffencrest Paradise City Open: Quarterfinals Results

PARADISE CITY - Provided that Ndakene doubles teams already out by the quarters, only 3 remained in the singles draw: 21-year-old Lou Herriot, Maritania Cross, and Dani Mateus. All of them have reached their first ever ATP quarterfinals, and all expressed their excitement and gratification for doing so. To many, they've began constructing a very bright future.

Lou Herriot, unfortunately, had to take on his compatriot companion Marianita Cross in straightforward sets. Herriot showed absolutely no sign of struggle against Cross as he maintained a very solid play all throughout the match. His powering groundstrokes, as well as his serve-and-volley to make points short and sweet, made it difficult for Cross to snag and drag a rhythm. Eventually, Herriot was able to claim a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Maritania Cross, and made it to his first-ever ATP semi-final.

Next up was Ndakene Dani Mateus taking on Felice Mareaux from Neu Engollon in a three-set thriller. Mateus and Mareaux were both demonstrating entertaining and true athleticism from the beginning to the end, and resulting from that was a physical and draw-dropping three set. Mateus and Mareaux found themselves in consecutive long rallies. At 4-all, we witnessed the crowd showing great appreciation by standing up after some breathtaking rallies by Mareaux and Mateus; it was at this point Mateus broke Mareaux's serve to claim the first set 6-4. Mateus in the second set started to show some fatigue from the heat and her performance from the first set. Being broken of serve thrice, Mareaux was able to stay alive with style with a 1-6 win in the second set. After speaking with her coach briefly during the changeover, Mateus was without a doubt rejuvenated to keep going. After 2 hours and 24 minutes of play so far, Mateus demonstrated what it truly means to play like a champion when she was able to break Mareaux's serve twice in order to close a 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 victory over Mareaux, and too moved onto the semifinal. She will take on compatriot Lou Herriot, which means there is a guaranteed chance of a Ndakene in the final.

Cracik Almeronovic has fought off stiff competition as has become the last Mercedinian standing in yet another tennis tournament, this time at the Paradise City Open in Costa de Ouro. Almeronovic has since beaten more opposition to reach the semi-finals of the first leg of the Astyrian Tour in Costa de Ouro, the Mercedinian's deepest run in any tennis competition to the date. It's been a heck of a start for the Mercedinian as he is guaranteed to be in the top 4 in the YTD rankings, setting a healthy precedent for the rest of the year.


In his most recent match, Cracik Almeronovic booked his place into the semi-finals with a hard fought victory against Gisela Stefanovic, a player and a nation who we could be seeing a lot more of in the coming months, truly a rising force in the tennis community. For Almeronovic, the first set was fairly routine for the Mercedinian as he powered through with an early break along with composed play to hold his nerve and keep control of the set, taking it 6-4. After that, that's when the Serb truly kicked into gear. She was firing on all gear with tremendous shot after tremendous shot to keep control of the set. However, Almeronovic stood his ground and managed to take the 50/50 chances that were on offer to keep him within touching distance of his opponent. The set went to a tiebreaker which the Serb won convincingly. Her fans and compatriots were cheering her on from the rafters as they could sense a shock on the cards. In the third and final set, the two players went toe-to-toe in the decider and had the entire arena on edge, you could hear a pin drop as the players hit their rallies back and forth and back and forth until one player either made an error or played a winning shot. After the normal span of regulation, it was six sets all and we kept going until a player was two sets clear, and that didn't take long. Cracik Almeronovic broke in the very next set, taking a 7-6 lead and stunning the Serb portion of the crowd. Almeronovic held his serve and booked his spot in the semi-finals. At the end of the match, both players received a standing ovation from the stadium, Stefanovic bowed out of a contest but you would've been forgived for thinking she'd won the entire tournament as the Serbs, Mercedinians and the neutrals gave her a great send-off to finish the match.

So, Almeronovic is through to the semi-finals, but here at Mercedini Sports Daily we cant be bothered to check who he has next, probably Ty Kanelious who beat Mattijana's Dominik Lisicki in the second quarter-final of the day.
