Second Annual AVBF Sevens Tournament (2016 Edition)

Welcome all to the second edition of the AVBF 7s Tournament in the beautiful Confederacy of Neu Engollon! Please, make yourselves at home and prepare for an exciting competition!

The format and schedule are below:

24 teams: 4 groups of 6, single round-robin (three games the first day and two the second), the top two teams in each group advance to the Cup competition. The remaining teams will be divided into two brackets of eight: 3rd and 4th place finishers will contest the Plate, while 5th and 6th place finishers will contest the Bowl.

SCORINATION, RP & CUTOFFS

As described in the OOC thread, I will be using the rugby union sevens function of xkoranate 0.3.3. Ranks from the Londinium 7s (2) and Port Louis 7s are being used, based off this NSRB 7’s ranking chart. Aside from previous earned rank, RP will be your other main form of gaining skill points for your team. RPs will be graded on a scale of 0-2.5, capped at two decimal places. Quality over quantity is preferred, as always, but brief, info lacking RPs will earn poor grades, as will RPs stuffed with a mass volume of meaningless filler. Posting a roster will be rewarded with points as well.

In addition to RP posted to the AVBF 7s IC thread (here), RP posted to the AVBF IC Festival thread can earn additional bonus with a possible full 2.5 points.
Total max RP bonus that can be earned for posting to both threads is 2.5, while total max bonus points earned for posting to either/or thread is also 2.5 points.
Rosters should be posted in this thread, not the Festival thread.
There will be a host bonus, considering the complexity of hosting and running such an event in multiple threads. (I am also scoring the beverage entrants simultaneously)

RP posted to the IC Festival thread, however, must be relevant to, or in reaction to the events taking place in that thread in order to count towards RP bonus, as well as following that thread's rules. RP that is not relevant to the Fest thread will be mod request deleted and will not be accepted for RP bonus. If you desire to RP story lines unrelated to either this current rugby sevens tournament or the concurrent festival, you can do that here in this Everything thread.

The Festival thread will also have other participants of the festival posting RP, such as brewery and distillery entrants, VIPs, entertainers, food vendors, and festival attendees. You may RP team members, fans or regular festival attendees without having to apply for posting to the Festival thread, but in order to RP brewers/distillers, food vendors, entertainers or VIPs, you must have submitted an application/sign up and been accepted in the main AVBF OOC thread first. Lastly, I'm keeping the IC timeline for this at August 2016, for various reasons. Very sorry again for the RL delay. I understand that this may be a bit confusing, so feel free to post questions in the Sevens OOC thread or to the AVBF OOC thread.

Cutoffs will be between 23:30-00:30 EST (UTC-4), although I will alert you all via the OOC thread should there be a change. PLEASE keep aware of the OOC schedule as there are some days I will skip scorination, and other days (weekends) I will score in a row.

The standard rugby sevens points system will be in effect for this tournament where: 3 points are awarded for a win, 2 for a draw, 1 for a loss, and 0 for a forfeit.

Tiebreakers will be (in order): 1. Head-to-head result between the tied teams.
2. Difference in points scored and allowed during pool play.
3. Points scored during pool play.
4. Coin toss (higher RP points).

AVBF Sevens - Lisander national sevens team

Lisander is making a big effort to boost rugby to the top of the world. The Lisander Rugby Union started a 10-season plan to make the country one of the top 5 nations in NSRB Rugby. From the Biggest teams of the Pro10 (The Lisanderian League), 12 men came. The team is the same from URSA Sevens, but Damian Skye, after a good performance in local tournament, earns a spot in starter seven. Kevin Armada was kept in starters, even after an argument with coach Assen. I think Leonard Assen had some background talks with Saracens owners and tried to quit or transfer the fly-half, but the undeniable quality of Armada made the coach reconsider. Asked by press, Kevin Armada stated he was completely wrong in that game where he was sent to Sin Bin and have deeply apologized to Assen.

Rugby is the third most popular sport in Elejamie, behind ice hockey and football (or soccer; American football is called "gridiron" and is considered a niche sport at best). Rugby union is the most popular form in Elejamie, with rugby league having a small but loyal fanbase. However, it wasn't until 2016 when there finally was an officially sanctioned rugby sevens tournament was announced: The ERC 7s, which begins on the fourth Friday of August and lasts for three days. Simply put, all twelve teams in that season's ERC (Elejamian Rugby Championship) are divided into two groups of six and play a single round robin tournament to see whether they'll play for the Cup, the Plate or the Bowl. The first group's games are played on the Friday, the second group's games are played on the following Saturday and the semi-finals, 3PPOs and Cup/Plate/Bowl finals are played on Sunday afternoon/evening. The inaugural tournament saw the Rosetta Sparrows grab a surprising Cup win, thanks to a win over favourites and groupmates Avon Knights 11-6; the Auckhampton Birch Trees won the plate after beating the Davenport Commandos 26-19; and the Edgebaston Warriors were Bowl winners when they defeated RC Los Reyes 35-24.

Back at the URSA Sevens over in Soria, Lisander, Elejamie were hoping to finally make it to their first cup final. And, indeed, that looked like a massive possibility after they thrashed Barunia 38-0. Next up came Bvriania, who had beaten Saintland 31-7 in their last game, so a tough and tight match was expected to be a possibility. Instead, it was a complete blowout with Elejamie winning 33-7, thanks to a barrage of conversions and penalties from Gary Toda, who had to miss the next game thanks to a leg injury. Not that it would've done him any great since that final group match against Saintland ended up being a 19-19 draw. Fortunately, Elejamie still remained top of the table and would go on to beat eventual plate winners Frenline Delpha 26-14 to make it to the semi-finals. However, the dream came to an end in a 21-17 defeat to Abanhfleft; however, Elejamie would later end up in third place with a 24-12 win over Racao, whereas Nova Anglicana would take home the cup with a 31-14 victory over the Fleftics. Elsewhere, Barunia would end up in eighth place following losses to Racao (29-7), Ethane (28-14) and hosts Lisander (33-10); Bvriania made it to the Bowl final but were crushed by Neu Engollon 38-0; and Saintland would end up losing their Shield final match 24-12 to Mattijana.

And so a new tournament dawns. With rumours of Phil MacKenzie's retirement looming over the horizon thanks to his contract with the Rosetta Sparrows expiring in Summer 2017, the Elejamians are going to see if they've got what it takes to finally bring home that coveted Cup home. Will they be able to do it here in Neu Engollon? Or would it end up being another heartbreak as they settle for third best yet again? Only time will tell...

Mattijanan Roster and Team Information

Rugby in Mattijana

The sport of Rugby has always had a reasonable following in Mattijana, but has never troubled the likes of Hockey, Cricket and Winter sports in terms of popularity. That began to change after the Olympics however, when the Mattijanan women's sevens team beat North Eurasia to seal a surprise gold medal.
Rugby Sevens has always been the most popular form of rugby in Mattijana due to the cocktail of speed, skill and strength required to be successful at it. Union is less liked, due to what Mattijanan's, who are in general fairly slender, see as an unfair advantage to big people.
Following the success of the Olympics, Mattijana began to expand its fairly underdeveloped league with some players even taking up the sport professionally. The increased awareness for the sport also led to increased participation at grass-roots level with young people and adults all encouraged to participate.

Sevens is particularly popular in the West and Centre North of Mattijana, which has a wetter climate leading to the softer pitches that are more friendly to players of a fast contact sport. These areas are largely Germanic, but have training facilities where players from other parts of the country can learn and practise the game.
The Mattijanan team itself is a largely female one following their success in Aeropag, but with a few of the male players who were ultimately disappointing after a strong performance in qualifying.

Head Coach-Dominika Simonic:

Despite only making the switch from rugby league into full time coaching 2 years ago, Simonic is already regarded as a national hero and a very good manager, both tactically and in terms of the personal relationship with the players. She masterminded the Olympic victory and appreciates that there is only one proper way to play rugby sevens-attack, attack attack.
The URSA sevens championship was a new challenge for the 38 year old however. An increased level of expectation and more established Rugby teams were on show and the team struggled, losing all three group stage matches. As a result, there is increased pressure on the coaching staff coming into the AVBF 7s.
Offensive Coach-Mattias Sichermann:

Attack is the most important part of most rugby sevens teams, in particular this one and Mattias Sichermann is as good a choice as any to manage it. Mixing a less popular, but ultimately extremely effective method of drilling his players in order to achieve maximum possible consistency with imagination and creativity, Sichermann is responsible for working out how to best use the talented attacking players at his disposable.

Defensive Coach-Andreas Marinicic:

Defense is a tough task in sevens, but Marinicic managed to introduce some form of resistance during the Olympics and plans to continue this. His main tactic is a seven-man defence with the attacking players responsible for pressing the attacking team high up the pitch to prevent them from breaking out, whilst introducing defensive techniques to wingers who have the pace to get back and make match saving tackles. All teams concede points, but Marinicic's mantra is that attack and intensity are the best ways to limit this.

Fitness Coach-Julia Kranjeberg:

Fitness plays a huge part in any Rugby sevens team, but the high attack and intensity of the Mattijanan side means it is even more applicable to them, especially with teams often having to play multiple matches on the same day. Kranjeberg, a chemical and bio-medical scientist with an experienced job in the Mattijanan Olympic side, Julia has a range of exercises and techniques to enhance speed and stamina.

Starting VII:

Prop-Martin Schimpelsberg:

A powerful player making up part of Mattijana's all male scrum, Schimpelsberg is a mainly defensive player with the occasional run forward to supply the backs.

Hooker-Danil Pecirep:

The typical central enforcer, Pecirep is an intimidating presence in the team in both directions with some driving runs forward and some solid tackles when defending. His pace (or lack of) is probably his biggest weakness, but that is made up for by other members of the team.

Prop-Sami Kravinski:

Another powerful player, Kravinski completes the scrum and is one of the younger members of the team at the age of 21. He can make a tackle, but is slightly quicker than his two scrum-mates and will likely be the last line of conventional defence.

Scrum-half-Katarina Ljubjevic:

The team captain, Ljubjevic is an experienced scrum half with both the ability to thread moves together and the pace and talent to finish them off. She was one of the star players during Mattijana's Olympic victory and will definitely be one to keep an eye on. Also takes the kicks, normally quite well.

Fly-half-Jessika Vrisilic:

Another gold medallist, Vriisilic has a great relationship with the players either side of her and will play in a mainly passing position during the tournament. She can also step in at scrum-half or centre if required.

Centre-Maria Uranj:

Maria Uranj was by far the most prolific scorer for Mattijana at the Olympics and makes up for a slight deficiency in pace with a repertoire of tricks and fancy footwork that can send even the most alert defender the wrong way. She has been in continued form for her domestic side and will look to trouble the opposition defences yet again.

Wing-Jasmin Simjonic:

One of the headline players in the team, Simjonic mainly earns her success through good timing and blistering pace which not many opposition defenders managed to temper during the Olympics. She ran in a try during the final, sandwiched by two from Urinj and will be looking for more during the tournament.

Savojarna making its debut on the international rugby stage!

Burgunden, NEG - Tomorrow, the Savojar Rugby Sevens team will compete for the first time ever in the AlpenView Brew Festival Sevens tournament. The opening game will be played against Nova Anglicana, the current number two of the international Sevens Series. Further opponents tomorrow will be unranked Mattijana, who makes its season debut as well, and the Sevens Series number 6, Devonta. Shall we emerge from this first match day with a total of six or more points (which would be a surprise), I think that there is a fair chance of advancing to the KO round, but the more likely outcome is that we will end up with 3 or less points and aim low for our first appearance on the international stage. Savojarna's rugby culture is relatively young, even though similar games have been played in the nation since the middle ages. Mediaeval football games were very popular in Savojarna and looked probably more like today's rugby, often ending in a vicious brawl. In fact, it was so bad that the authorities had executed a total of 9 men in 1241 for playing a football match carrying swords, which apparently did not remain unused. In later times, Savojar warriors enjoyed a game that is seen by Savojars as the direct predecessor to rugby, and was often also played with blunt weapons as it was seen as a preparation for battle. Many of the traditions from this game carried over to rugby.

Today, Savojars do of course play rugby unarmed, but it is a tradition for Savojar rugby teams to enter the stadium carrying a shield and battle axe designed according to the historic region of their team to important games. If the tournament authorities permit it, the Savojars will bring specially made ceremonial shields and weaponry, designed by a Savojar heraldic specifically for the rugby team, onto the pitch in Burgunden as well. Before the games in Savojarna, the two teams try to appeal to the Gods for success. The Savojar teams, which usually hold Nordic beliefs, often do so with a furious battle cry and smacking their shields with the axes, sometimes developing into a crafted art. Especially teams from Ejana usually have elaborate cry-and-smack routines to make the Gods sway their way (and impress the opponent). Christian teams, usually from the mainland, instead follow this tradition by loudly singing a psalm or performing other special routines. Russican teams also often do not carry axe and shield as they were not a part of Savojarna when this tradition developed and were rather often conquered and raided by men carrying those shields. They instead have been wearing chains to symbolise their slavery under Savojar rule in the Middle Ages and the Savojar Empires, traditional Russican armour and weaponry, and Agrar St. Andrei once entered the stadium in long, monk-like coats celebrating the city's Christian heritage and importance.

Sevens and Union are the two most popular codes in Savojarna, with League almost unheard of. The Savojar league is conducted in Rugby Union, and it consists of 14 teams playing each other twice. Between the seasons, there is a prestigious series of Rugby Sevens tournaments, the so called Triple S (Savojar Sevens Series). The Triple S consists of the eight best teams of the Savojar Rugby Serien ranking, which is conducted over the last three years, referred to as the Triple S Class. They are automatically invited to all four Triple S tournaments, traditionally played in Storevik, Savojagrad, Virkaja and Thorsborg. Each tournament also invites four more teams (not necessarily the same four), and the tournaments are played in groups of 6 followed by a semifinal and a final. After the four tournaments, the six best teams are invited to Sjoedrhavn for the Triple S Final Tournament. There, they play a play-off for the title of Rugby Sevens Champion of Savojarna. Last season, the SRS was won by Zenit Nordrvik from Ejana while the Triple S got won by Motor Savojagrad.

A note about godmodding: Everything that could happen under real world physics and rules, but is unlikely is fair game. So, if you want to RP someone kicked a ball across the whole pitch to score, do it, even if that is possibly a godmod (and probably not "possible" under RL physics and RL humans, but not completely unimaginable if you have exceptionally strong players I guess. If you do stuff that is impossible though - magic etc. - that is not okay.
Second note regarding violence: Feel free to stage a fight between Savojars and your people (be it fans or players) if you want. However, Savojarna has an incredibly strong warrior culture and always honoured fighters, so expect to get a bloody nose or two. Also, along with this culture comes a strong sense of honours and ethics in a fight. In Savojarna, it is regarded as extremely bad form and a strong sign of cowardness to hurt a person who is visibly beaten or does not want to fight. This means that you are free to brawl with Savojars, but please do not have any Savojars attacking innocents or engaging in group violence against people laying on the ground. We do not do that. Also, we don't hit people from behind if we are not in a fight already. Getting behind an opponent is a sign of bad skill on their part and a it's fair move to use in a fight. Getting behind an unsuspecting person and sucker punching them from behind is a move for cowards who don't dare to confront their opponent face to face.

Dave Carrey's Guide to the Second AVBF Rugby Sevens

Most of us remember the first AVBF Sevens. In fact, we all had high hopes for the tournament. We had just come back from an opening day loss to take home the Plate which, you had to admit, wasn't a bad start for a newcomer. In fact, the more optimistic among us felt we were ready to take home the Cup! That would've been a miracle. Sadly, it wouldn't happen. What did happen, however, was a disappointing group stage followed by a quarter-final thrashing. Most of us remember it... but most of us would also like to forget it.

Still, I guess it's time for a recap, seeing as I've already talked about it and those who didn't pay much attention were wondering why the gloomy opening paragraph. To begin with, we got off to a great start. No, really, when you win your first game 43-7, then that's a sign you're a team to be feared. And this was before the 42-5 and 49-0 blowouts we did at the Olympics. So imagine everyone's surprise when we ended up going down 24-10 to Aels although, to be fair, they did beat us 29-5 in Londinium so I guess this was a step up. After we whitewashed Maramark 38-0, we were just edged out by Marion Oaks 19-17. However, things turned round for our final game, a 24-17 victory over Semarland that pushed us into our first cup final. The downside was that we were up against the Natanians and Nosts, who had swept their group and, indeed, swept us aside easily, 33-7. So, with the party over, the only thing we could do was enjoy the Brew Festival and lick our wounds as we got ready for Port Louis.

And so, because I've already recapped the URSA Sevens (which you can find here) I'm instead going to talk about everyone we'll be up against. Or, at the very least, our groupmates here in Group D. And, first up, we've got an easy morning game against Nueva Andalusia. I must admit that I don't really know a whole lot about these guys or if rugby's very popular over there, which was why I said it would be easy. To be honest, they could pull off a shock and beat us. Unlikely, I know, but it's still a possibility. After all, we would've made it to the Cup quarter finals in Londinium if it weren't for point difference. But I don't see that happening right now.

After that, we've got Hutanjia. Everyone who knows rugby knows that Hutanjia are one of the best rugby teams in the world... when it comes to league; after all, four . However, when it comes to union, they're a lot less prestigious, with their only major success being Plate winners at the first Londinium 7s a long time ago. That being said, they aren't pushovers. Over in Port Louis, they ended their group run in a respectable second place, beating the Scottopian Isles 22-12 and thrashing Lisander (more on them later) 38-14 but losing their final group game 29-21 to hosts and group winners Racao. Fortunately, they managed to come back from that loss in style as they beat favourites Natanians and Nosts 28-12 in their plate semi-final. However, the magic ran out in the plate final as they succumbed to a 26-19 loss to Frenline Delpha. They weren't present in the URSA Sevens so chances are that they might not be as formidable as they should be. But we'll see when we get there.

And, to round off the first day, we've got Lisander later on in the afternoon. In the Port Louis Sevens, the Irises didn't really get off to the greatest of starts as they were defeated in all three of their group stage games: 31-7 to the hosts Racao, the aforementioned 38-14 loss to Hutanjia and, to round things off, a very narrow 26-22 loss to the Scottopian Isles. Fortunately, before you could say they were down and out, they bounced back with style as they blew Sioux Lookout (one of our groupmates from the same tourney in fact) out of the water in convincing fashion, 38-14, to make it to the Shield Final. Which they won, with a 31-7 victory over Levivania. They came back in the URSA Sevens when they won all but one of their group games, lost their Cup quarter-final game to the Abanhfleft, lost their Plate semi-final game against Frenline Delpha but managed to come back with a 33-10 victory over Barunia; however the URSA sevens wasn't an NSRB-sanctioned event, so chances are the rankings might come and bite them in the behind.

Following a long and refreshing rest, we move onto Madives. In the first U20 Rugby Cup, Madives actually did quite well for themselves as they finished group A with three wins, a draw and a shutout loss in their last group game. However, their luck was short-lived as they went down 24-7 to Ceolta in their quarter-final game. There's also the Five Nations, an invitational U20 tournament they hosted, where they managed to play all four of their games - two wins and two losses resulting in a second place finish in the table - before the tournament was unexpectedly cancelled. Why am I bringing this up? Because, to be honest, it's pretty much the only rugby thing I could find on them. Saying that, it could be interesting to see whether we'll be faced with more junior talent or if it'll be the seniors' time to shine. Either way, we'll find out when we get there.

And, to round things off, we've got Alice Bay. According to this piece I've found on the internet, they're not too far away from Lisander, which should make their Round 2 game intriguing. In fact, the two were rugby rivals in the olden days although, since Lisander turned professional, the rivalry has somewhat faded. However, they do have some sevens experience. They played in the NAR7A Cup, where they beat the WKS (Wet Korea/Silvastan) Hell Bombers 31-17 but lost to eventual tournament winners Freyhill (not saying their nickname, this is a family site - Dave) 21-19, despite leading 19-10 at half-time. I don't think they'll let this setback bother them, although the downside is that they're up against some stiff competition so chances are they'll end up losing quite badly.

So where does that leave us? All things considered, I think we're pretty much going to make it into the Cup stages. Our biggest challenge is Hutanjia and, even then, I'm pretty sure we're able to get a few tries on the board. Lisander could also be a tough opponent, seeing as they fought very hard on their home turf a few months ago. But Madives, Alice Bay and Nueva Andalusia? I don't think we've got to worry about them for a long, long time.

Elsewhere, hosts Neu Engollon are in Group A, where things are shaping up to be a real Group of Death. Not only do they have to contend with current #1s Racao but they've also got Abanhfleft, up-and-coming Bvriania (who were destroyed 38-0 by Neu Engollon in the URSA Sevens Bowl final) and rugby veterans Jeckland, returning after a long hiatus. The Unified Sunrise Islands are the only team out of the lot that doesn't really seem that much of a threat and, even then, I'm pretty sure they've got a few tricks up their sleeves. Group B is a much more simple affair, however. Nova Anglicana's only got to worry about the United States of Devonta and, to a lesser extent, Ethane. Although URSA Sevens Shield winners Mattijana are also joining the party, as are newcomers Schottia and Savojarna, I don't really see them making any major waves. Not at this point. And, to round off this paragraph, let's move over to Group C, which is even more simpler. The Natanians and Nosts are also returning after a long hiatus, where they'll probably end up bagging a few easy wins against Qasden, Islana Lunigo and Anglatia, maybe Barunia as well. Frenline Delpha might be a thorn in their side but chances are that captain Kaeso will lead his team to victory.

As for a prediction of who'll win what? Either Nova Anglicana, the Natanians and Nosts or Neu Engollon to take home the Cup; Lisander to take home the Plate; and Bvriania to take home the Bowl. And, as always, we'll take home third place. If we're lucky. Hopefully I'll get proved wrong as Diego Molina finally lifts that coveted Cup over his head in celebration. Either way, this should be an action-packed three days, so get ready for some edge-of-your-seat action. I know I am.

Lions Back At It Again In AVBF 7s

Now this is what rugby is all about. The Courier has sent me over to Burgunden, Neu Engollon to cover the rugby sevens competition, but the Alpen View Beer Festival is also going on. Our own Lion Brewing Company is participating in the festival's competition, entering some old favorites like the Lion Lager and Stout as well as new additions like the Mayflower Saison and High Tide Scotch Ale. I'll be paying plenty of attention to the rugby, but expect some updates on the beer as well. Rugby and beer go together so well, and I'll do my best to keep you up to date on both.

This is actually the second NSRB-sanctioned AVBF 7s competition the Lions have participated in. In the first one, the national team actually started out really well, defeating Polar Islandstates 38-0, then toppling hosts and top-5 team Neu Engollon 26-12. They followed that up by nipping a team that had given the 15s side fits, Abanhfleft, by a score of 21-19 and then falling flat on their faces to newcomers Smertolina, 31-21. They bounced back to defeat Thaldor 38-5 and win their group with a record of 4-0-1. Unfortunately, they had to face off against the hosts Neu Engollon again in the quarterfinals, and this time the Goats got their revenge and came away the victors, 28-14.

It was a disappointing end to that AVBF 7s competition, but the Lions are actually coming off a great performance in their last sevens competition, the URSA 7s in Lisander. It wasn't an official NSRB event, but the Lions played like it was, rolling through their group with a 3-0-0 record and a +62 point differential. They breezed past Ethane 29-7, and then would face world #1s Racao. The Lions had defeated Racao twice before in close games, but absolutely crushed them this time, 47-7. They then defeated Abanhfleft in the final, 31-14, to claim the URSA 7s Cup.

The Lions surely have to be riding high after their star turn in the URSA 7s, but they can't afford to underestimate their opponents. They will open with warlike Savojarna, a game that is sure to be hard-fought. They will then face off against the United States of Devonta. The Lions have defeated the Devontans 38-7 in the Port Louis 7s and 50-0 in the Londinium 7s II, but they are ranked #6 in the world and can't be taken lightly. Ethane, Mattijana, and Schottia are also on the schedule, with Ethane being the only ranked team, but Mattijana was an enthusiastic participant and took the Shield in the URSA 7s. Schottia hasn't participated in a 7s event before, but I'm sure they will do their best.

The other challenge for the Lions is breaking in three new starters. Stalwarts like Danny Dougherty and Marc Riviere will return, but Jonah Stallworth and Luke Clayton are the new props, and Alex Lyons will take over for Jamie Peters at fullback. Stallworth and Clayton are big boys and will certainly hit and play hard, but they are largely untested in games, and it's unclear as to whether they'll be able to keep pace. Lyons has played as a reserve before, and is a real talent, but his interests seem to lie in scoring tries and running with the ball rather than being that last line of defense that fullbacks are. His buy-in to the defensive scheme will be key.

But there's no time to waste! The Lions begin play against Savojarna tomorrow and you can watch all the action on StateSports2 beginning at 07:00 Nova Anglicana time. Make sure you tune in!

Rugby in Racao
Rugby is currently one of the most popular sports in Racao, along with athletics and association football. It was originally introduced to Racao with British colonizers; army officers and soldiers would play the game during their off time. Although rugby has been consistently popular in Racao for the past seventy years, Racao has never fielded a rugby team of any sort due to the lack of funding and a lack of development of players. Most rugby played in Racao is informal and played in streets and alleyways, with however many players are available at any one time. As a result of this structure, most rugby players in Racao tend to lack what foreigners would call technique or finesse. However, they do have a considerable amount of raw talent and skill gained from years of experience. Only recently have academies opened to develop this talent into something on par with rugby teams in other nations. Because of this recent development, most of the players on Racao's roster are quite young, with none older than 24.

There is a rugby union league in Racao, with 8 teams, founded about a year ago. Voanorova Valiant was crowned champion, with Port Louis Liberty only one point behind in the standings. Several of Racao's sevens players currently play in this league. Plans are currently in progress to establish a small sevens league. Sevens rugby in Racao is a little smaller than union and league rugby, but because its smaller structure is more entertaining and exciting and less time-demanding, it is on track to grow to be the most popular form of rugby in Racao. The Racao Rugby Federation hopes to achieve success at this rugby tournament, and hopes that this success will further prompt development of rugby in Racao.

Racao performed well during the Londinium Sevens until a devastating loss in the semifinals to Natanians and Nosts as well as to Nova Anglicana in the third-place match, a match that many think should have been the real final rather than the third place match. Nonetheless, what happened happened, but Racao came to the Alpen View Beer Festival ready for revenge against Nova Anglicana and Natanians and Nosts in their quest for a sevens rugby title. They failed at the last hurdle, reaching the final. Now they hope to achieve more on home soil and finally bring home the title that they so desperately want.

Meanwhile Lorenthia is excited about Hockey, Lisander and Alice Bay are in the same pool at AVBF Sevens! Yes, yes, yes EXACTLY WHAT YOU READ! In the same pool.

Pool D of the AVBF Sevens will have both Lisander and Alice Bay, as well as Hutanija, Madives and Nueva Andalusia. Despite living different times, both nations come with very few pretensions. Lisander will be happy if he gets a second place in the pool, perhaps trying a surprise against Hutanija. Still, they will have to sweat a lot, after all among the teams in the NSRB Ranking are the weakest, in the twenty-eighth place. TV5's team of predictors bet on the following results in the first phase:

Round 1: Lisander 34-3 Madives. Taking into consideration that Madives is very involved with the Rugby U-20, the most likely is that they put a young team also in the AVBF Sevens. It is hoped Lisander will have no difficulties to win.

Round 2: Lisander 31-7 Alice Bay. With all due respect to our Alice Bay colleagues, everyone knows it will be an easy game. The changes implemented in the management of President Vins made Lisanderian Rugby much more attractive, quick and technical. The victory will come easy too, but the derby promises to be exciting as the two Unions have established that the Queen Alice Trophy will be in contest for the first time in three years.

Round 3: Lisander 17-28 Elejamie. After a quiet win, a virtually certain defeat. We expect a good performance, a team fighting hard. But it's Elejamie on the other side. The last time Lisander faced a top 5 nation, it was taken to dance, 24-14 against Nova Anglicana.

Round 4: Lisander 14-17 Hutanija: It is not wrong to dream. Hutanija is a nation in the top 10, and perhaps the margin of defeat could be greater, but again we hope that at least the team will stand firm in front of the opponent. A tie would be great!

Round 5: Lisander 28-0 Nueva Andalusia. We did not get any information about this team. They are not even ranked. We believe in an easy victory, given the minimal relevance of Nueva Andalusia in international rugby.

Overall, a third place in the group is expected, although a second is desired. We know it's a long way to go. But we will follow the team in every game, so you, a rugby fan, will not miss a thing!

Barunian National Rugby 7's Team

Rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in the country, but it is still relatively small. The rugby team nickname is "The Waves" with the 7s squad sometimes referred to as the "Small Waves" to distinguish them from the 15-man team. This 7s team is almost identical to the one that competed in the last AVBF, with one exception: Prop Matt Neachtain, who impressed at Number 8 in the 24th Union World Cup. Findlay Martin also impressed in that tournament, and became the only Barunian rugby player to be awarded an international club contract.

Mattijana Thrash Ethane in AVBF Opener
Mattijana 31-7 Ethane

Mattijana's Rugby Sevens team got off to an excellent start at the AVBF 7s tournament in Neu Engollon, beating 28th ranked side Ethane to secure their place as early group leaders.
After a disappointing tournament at the URSB Sevens, head coach Dominika Simonic was keen to see in the new year with victory in the first match in Neu Engolon, but chose to stick with a similar side to the one that lost all 3 group stage games in Lisander. She was rewarded for her apparent hard work early on, as an intense start led to a mistaken knock-on by the Ethanian scrum half under pressure, handing possession to the Mattijanan backs via the scrum. With the lack of manpower from the scrum stretching Ethane, Katarina Ljubjevic was able to dummy a pass out wide before sending Maria Uranj through to score under the posts.

The poor start for Ethane was then compounded by a poor high-tackle by the Ethanian winger, which resulted in a yellow card, and Mattijana cashed in, with a weakened defensive line out wide exploited by Jasmin Simjonic, who found space to score twice, once in a central position and once out wide, meaning that at the half time break, Mattijana led by 19 points to 0.

With the Ethanians back to full numbers, they seemed to become tighter, but still let Uranj through the net after some quick play from Ljubjevic, Vrisilic and Simjonic allowed Uranj to make a sharp run through the gap between two defenders to score another converted try.
At 26-0, with just 4 minutes to go, the Ethanians were pretty much out, but scored a consolation try as a missed tackle on the wing left no cover in behind, but Mattijana had the final word, with a grubber kick in behind collected by Vrisilic, who scored out on the wing to make the final score 31-7.

After the match, Dominika Simonic said:

"I'm really happy with our performance today. We had good intensity in the first few minutes, which put their defence under a lot of pressure and induced a lot of the defensive errors that they made. We managed to keep that up as well, which impressed me. It's only the first match though, so we'll still work hard before our next game and we'll go out aiming to win that one as well. I want to give huge credit to my players and to people like Mattias (Sichermann, the offensive coach) and Andreas (Marinicic, the defensive coach), who help give this group of players the ideas and belief to go out and perform like this."

After Ethane, Mattijana face Nova Anglicana, Savojarna, Devonta and Schottia.

Irises won the first game against Madives, and Alice Bay is next!

Lisander started his way in the AVBF sevens with a victory against Madives. The Irises dictated the rhythm of the game, with two tries in the early 4 minutes, both scored by Sebastian Livon (1:54 and 3:23) and easily converted by Matthew Gear. After that, Leonard Assen asked the team to hold the possession and go slowly. The fail in lisanderian in the fast attack turned evident when the front row collapsed a scrum and the backs did not had time to return to its own positions. Enough space to Mark Kutwaki emerge with the ball and score an easy try to Madives (6:27). Affected by the try of Madives, the team chose to finish the first half with a Drop Goal of Kevin Armada.

In the 2nd half, Leonard Assen replaced Edwin Blanche by Andreas Linzmeyer and the front row earned a little in weight. Damian Skye, the new starter scrum-half, appeared more than in first half, and scored the third try of the Irises in the match (9:24), again converted by Gear. Madives still had a great chance of a new try, but Mark Kutwaki was stopped by Linzmeyer and Maximilian Dalena (see photo). In the aftermath of this match, Sebastian Livon scored his third try of the day (13:43), giving final numbers to the match.

The Irises now wait their next match, the Derby against Alice Bay, later today! Alice Bay v Lisander will be broadcasted on TV5Sports 1, for both Lisander and Alice Bay! STAY TUNED!

When you think Rugby, you don't think Unified Sunrise.

Maybe that's an over-exaggeration but honestly, it needs to be stated. The Sunrisians are one of the few nations that has more than five leagues they care about, of course, their leagues of association football, ice hockey, basketball, volleyball and the native sport of patinsball being considered the big five. That being said, they all went through their trials: ice hockey managed to reach a number of sixty-four teams at a point, now turned into a more condensed system named NSI.HOCKEY; basketball's league managed to get bankrupt and eventually remade into a more explainable league, featuring its' national stars as regulars instead of relying on foreign talent; association football's numbers are considered to be bloated by its' sixty-four, five-tier system; volleyball still lacks the title presence even if its' league could make a case of being one of the oldest leagues (and even trying to have a rivalry against the league of fellow volleyball fanatic nation 95X) and patinsball lacks relevance outside of the Sunrisian diaspora.

But there's much more. A baseball league (exported from another dimension, no less) is at least the third incarnation of said tournament and has always recorded legitimate small fees; a gridiron league was established to act as a convict dumping ground until an accident involving the Boatmurdered Sankis' defensive line killing five players of the Danielson Antlers forced the league to dissolve with an actual pro league established months later; the Ponyta Racing circuit has been a thing for a while now, even if the most remarkable thing is the use of really silly names all around; a twenty20 cricket league was formed by foreigners and serves mostly as a pun; an Underland Football league (or Australian rules Football if you wish) manages to have a decent following; a handball league has been the main attraction of boring Saturday post-lunch time spots for a while now; a lacrosse tournament was kickstarted by the Ontoriseans and manages to have a decent run as well; a Gaelic football league is still alive (and doing very well for what it is, by the way); the Sunrisian X-Series is the closest thing to an extreme sports event around the multiverse these days; the Sunrisian Tennis Championship has been working over the possibility of having ATP athletes instead of home talent just because it seems just that good of an opportunity to pass up; a Water Polo league exists for some reason and at a full moon, people have noted spotting goths flying on winged brushes over the skies of Sunrice to "catch a flying ball".

Sunrise is zany, one has to assume. But amidst all this, there's a Rugby league... league. The Arceusian 16, the coolest name of a league in USI as far as it's known, features (well) 16 teams fighting over the league's title, a replica of the shield of Arceus. The league was started by a couple of teams from the Northern Sunrise that were keeping the sport alive, spearheaded by Royal Mardi, originally a cricket side looking to expand their efforts much like the Sunrice Saint-Raptors. The Arceusian 16 has been a healthy competition, however.

The national team already has experience, having played the URSA Sevens once, where they finished at a... well... 11th out of 16 teams. Well, they have to start from somewhere, after all.
