Trying to decided between three directions for southern China.

1.) "Republic of Aristocrats" Technically a democratic republic, but dominated by the moneyed and propertied classes to the point of plutocracy. Economically prosperous and industrializing, but massive wealth inequality and social problems remain.
2.) "Progressive Authoritarianism" A nation in which dissent and political opposition is clamped down on. Power is concentrated in the hands of a single ruling party which is relatively liberal outside the area of political rights and intent on dragging the country into modernity. Of course the old ruling class and conservatives are deeply opposed to this modernization. Somewhat similar to Ataturk's Turkey.
3.) Constitutional Monarchy. In the British style, the monarch exerts much informal power both politically and socially. However, governing power is devolved to elected parliamentary government. Conservatives, gentry, businessmen, liberals, populists, and socialists all battle for political supremacy as the king tries to keep the country together.

I still feel that a Chinese state with a very Western model of government and society would make little sense in our timeline. Why would the centre of East Asian civilisation adopt Western ideas in a world where East Asia has always had parity with the West?

Well it would still remain tied into global trade networks like the Song, bringing in outside knowledge. If other Song trends continued there would also be a sizable "middle class" of sorts alongside a general diffusion of art and literature through more of the population. With this in mind, western influences could combine with shifting local beliefs to form new ways of thinking and governance. Although there would remain a rough parity with the west, China has historically undergone dips and crisis which could lead to this upheaval as well. Of course any new government would still be uniquely Chinese and my descriptions are pretty simplistic. I see your point though, it would be strange for south China to be completely western in its outlook.

Scandinavia was largely Orthodox as far as I remember, but with pagan influences. Germania has a pagan twist to its religion, and even Italia has pagans.

1700: Muckraker Wilson Hunniford discovers that President McGrath was the product of incest in the Hunniford Affair and attempted to cover this fact up. President McGrath resigns and appoints PM Emil Carrington as president.
1700-1712: Emil Carrington's presidency.
1709: The controversial Norridgewock Treaty is signed between Abenaki tribesmen and the government of Novanglia which grants citizenship to the Abenaki tribes as long as they learn English and/or French. Abenaki chief Abornazine declares war on Novanglia believing in an independent Abenaki state known as Wabanahkik.
1709-1722: Abornazine's War.
1722: Chief Abornazine is killed at the Battle of Wyman Lake and the revolt is crushed.
1722-1840: Pax Novanglia. 118 years of peace and stability reign as the Novanglian economy soars and unemployment lessens. In 1730 the Clarkist Assosciation becomes the Workingmen's Party. The first Native president is elected, Anakausuen Hamilton, who rules from 1740-1752 under the Workingmen's Party.
1840: Pax Novanglia ends as the Novanglian stock market crashes, President Elias Barnett attempts to fix the situation by raising taxes and printing more money but creates an inflation crisis.
1840-1847: Novanglian Depression.
1843: President Barnett dies of an aneurysm resulting from stress, VP Samuel McConaughey becomes president.
1843-1847: President McConaughey introduces numerous reforms to mitigate the crisis. In 1847 the economy stabilizes and hyperinflation ends.
1850: Great Fire of Pittsfield. 56% of Pittsfield Massachusetts is burned. President McConaughey personally helps repair the city.
1855: Yale University is founded in New Haven, Connecticut.
1855-1870: Next 15 years sees an influx of immigrants from Europe. President McFadden in his last few years of office declares his intent to gain land in Africa and the Pacific to expand Novanglian prestige and influence.
1870: Novanglian elections begin with Joseph Bartley (Federalist Party), Horace Stanway (Workingmen's Party) and Wilford White (Commonwealth Party) running against each other for president, the main issues being expansion and women's suffrage.
