“Men make History, but not at the time he wishes.”

– Karl Marx__________________________________

But for the sake of argument, what if we could?

Be it a point of divergence or a whole new nation, what if we could make history EXACTLY at the point that we wish?

Hello and welcome to Another Alternative Divergence, an AH/AW RP where the world is your oyster to do whatever you wish. For the sake of continuity, the time now is 1870 C.E., and nations are expanding in a world not quite yet sobered by war for annihilation. What would be your vision of a world shaped by the nation that you call your own?

Again, for the sake of continuity, we should set a few ground rules.

  • All apps need a point of start and build-up – Whether you start from stone age and build it up to 1850 or simply change a few things here and there from 1800’s is up to you, but I would like for all nations to have an interesting history behind it… to prove you are capable AH/AW Rper.
  • All nations MUST be somewhat original – Let’s try to be a bit more creative than having Great Britain at all its glory. You can keep the name and title, but you MUST have some degree of DIFFERENCE between your nation and the IRL ones.
  • Everything can be excused with reason – I am willing to let anything be possible as long as it is stated clearly in the app with full explanation as to why it has come to be for your nation. … Similarly, I will accept NOTHING without a proper explanation.

Guidance System [[OPTIONAL]]

This is something that I would like to try. We are creating an alternative world, right? Is there any historical divergence that you would like to be uniquely yours? Did the Chinese industrialize faster than Europeans? Did the Vikings settled down and colonized the Americas? Did the plague never wipe out Native Americans? Submit the app below, and you can add ONE alternative point as FACTUAL HISTORY for our RP!

A few things to keep in mind:
  • You can only have ONE Guidance. I’ll be the deciding judge on what is or what is not a single guidance.
  • I would rather like this to be regional or global phenomenon, instead of “Nation A is the STRONGEST IN HISTORY!”
  • Remember, you can always use your Guidance to cancel our others.
    • EX- You can cancel out “Chinese industrialized faster than Europeans” with “Chinese industrialized faster than Europeans EXCEPT the English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and the Dutch, which still managed to industrialize even faster.”
  • If not stated by app or by Guidance, assume that the world was same as before. Of course, every app and every guidance will become something that need to be kept in mind in the RP.

Guidance Application

Code: Select all
Guidance Name : [[Every great event has a title. Doesn’t need to be fancy, like “Nanauatl hears our woes!” for curing the Smallpox by Spanish, and so on.]]
Guidance Description : [[What happened?]]
Affected Area : [[Just Europe? Just Middle East? Global?]]

Accepted Reservations - Updated 2015-07-26

[[Territories can be found in the above maps as to which territories are still open]]

Accepted Applications - Updated 2016-08-03
[[Be aware that many of the accepted apps may have the status of work in progress.]]

Accepted Guidance - Updated 2016-01-17

  • Legacy of Song Continues - "Oriental Tech" group is created consisting at first of Far East Nations. Nations within Oriental culture group enjoy EXACTLY the same technology level as Western Powers and Western Europeans have recognized Oriental culture as European's equals.
  • A Hamburg spark of Genius - German region becomes the most industrialized nation in the world at start, with urbanization already well under way. Any Western European powers (and by doing so Oriental group as well) receives up to 10 years tech boost for whatever their innovation, allowing invention to be obtained faster than IRL history.

Guidance Name : Legacy of Song continues
Guidance Description : Scientific and technological revolutions occurred during Song Dynasty was astounding. These legacies allowed Song Dynasty leaps and miles ahead of technological capabilities of other nations. It could be argued that Song Dynasty was able to continue its existence thanks to its own technological feats rather than its administrative capabilities. However, its eventual fall to the Mongols saw the fall of Song Dynasty… but nots its legacy.
Under the Pax Mongolia, the technologies were inherited Mongol Empire, who allowed these technologies to flourish and continue. More importantly, technological engineering of Song Dynasty were shared with the rest of the world. This allowed Mongol Empire and to spread the engineering feats of Song Dynasty with the Far East cousins, allowing Far East countries great amount of technological advancement under Pax Mongolia.
Furthermore, with the creation of Golden Khanate after the fall of Mongol Empire, which allowed the Khanate ideals of advancement and sharing of scientific advancements, invaded and successfully re-conquered the Chinese once more, further allowing Song Dynasty’s legacies to be continued and shared. This allowed the Song Dynasty’s scientific progress to continue throughout the oriental history.
Furthermore, as Golden Khanate held firm grip in the orient, the neo-Confucian idea were unable to become the dominant ideology. Neo-Confucianism, which in current timeline halted scientific progress due to its conservative beliefs, were unable to take root in China and Far East in general. Without the philosophical bottleneck, the legacy of Song Dynasty continued, allowing industrialization to occur in the Far East.
In short, due to Song Dynasty’s legacy kept in hold by the Mongolian grip on the Chinese proper, Far East regions maintained their technological growth, allowing them to compete with the Western nations. While not superior… and perhaps not even very well spread, the Europeans had to acknowledge that the Far East were their equals in terms of science and culture.

Affected Area : Oriental Asia, including Manchurian provinces, mainland China, Korean Peninsula, and Japanese Islands. European perception of Far East region has also changed from “primitive” to “equals.”

Implications :
  1. The region of East Asia has technological advancement similar to that of West.
  2. Due to this technological feats, East Asian nations are accepted into the "imperial world" much as the same as Westerners, as they are unable to ignore the East's power

Guidance Name : A Hamburg spark of Genius
Guidance Description : In 1756 a Hansa man by the name of Willhelm Kruft, designed aachine to increase his mill's production. The first steam powered engine was crude and tempermental. But a friend of Kruft, Joseph Richter saw vast potential. By 1785 he had several businesses running on a steam engine and had sold plans to his brother Rudolf Richter who drew up plans for another ground breaking machine, it took him 15 years and all his inheritance and some of his brothers but eventually became a reality. The Richter Steam powered transport. A train. In 1791 the Hansa government bought the design from the brothers and began developing extensive rail lines in and around Hamburg.

The new railroad system allowed for more ideas to spring to the forefront. Soon Hansa became the most advanced nation in europe. It attempted to keep all its technology to itself but by 1800 nearly every nation in europe had at least begun design of a steam engine.

However with a leg up on the competition Hansa remained technologically advanced by 1850 it was clear. Repeater support guns and repeater rifles protect all its cities. Rail lines allow the easy movement of materials and people, and factories pump out goods night and day at an unbelievable rate.
Affected Area : I would say global but correct me if i am wrong.

Implications
  1. All nations with "Western" or "Oriental" technology group (again, these groups are set when a nation declares the status and neighboring nations approve of this status) get a technology boost of +10 years. As a result, technology maxim for these nations in 1850, for instance, would be 1860.
  2. Hansa Federation does NOT gain extra technology leap, but has railway network extending throughout the empire by default history. No other nation can start this heights and cannot start an app with this infrastructure development.
  3. Major cities in Hansa Federation is equal to fully industrialized cities in 1860's of IRL. No other nation can start with this heights and cannot start an app with this development.

It's good, only if I could have the rest of Byelorussia it would be much appreciated, since that border right now is pure flat swampland, and at least having the Pripyat on the border would make it more organic and defensible.

Full Nation Name: United Kingdom of Cambria (Cambrian Empire)
Majority/Official Culture: Welsh, English
Territorial Core: England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Channel Islands, Orkey Islands, Shetlands, Canada minus western B.C., Australia, Cambrian Aegypt, Ascension Island.
Territorial Claim: Western British Columbia, New Zealand
Capital City: Londinium (RL London)
Population: 37.3 million (Populstat 1870)

Government Type: Constitutional monarchy
Government Ideology/Policies: Imperialist
Government Focus: Military, economy/industry, science
Head of State: Queen Victoria o Rosa Regina (Alexandrina Tudoria Victoria)
Head of Government: Consul Primaris William Caledonis Gladstone
Government Description: The Cambrian Parliament is a bicameral legislature composed of the Circle of Archons (upper house of peerage) and the Circle of Praetors (lower house of commons). The Royal Senate is the executive cabinet of specialised advisors in particular ministries who advise the Consul Primaris.

Majority/State Religion: Cambrian Paganism
Religious Description: Cambrian Paganism is a less a religion than it is a communal spiritual connection to the natural world. Central to the faith is the idea that all things are interconnected; the seasons, the life cycles of humanity and the world around them, and the apparent order of all things. The belief that all things have their own spirit, similar to Shintoism, and the exploration of the natural order through the scientific method are mutually inclusive. Celebrations and observances include the solstices and equinoxes of the sun cycle, the lunar patterns, the sowing and the harvest. Balance and karma are also strong concepts in Cymrean Paganism.

In addition to the natural spirits are a pantheon of semi-deities - more like heroes and champions of legend and myth that are venerated, and whose interventions are often sought. These include Dadga, the All-Father and chief amongst Cambrian heroes; Tyr, greatest of warriors and champion of courage; Atalanta, the legendary ancient naval commander and hero of the seas; Morgana, the lady of death; and Wyrd, the champion of fate and chance. These icons represent certain facets of the world and provide a source of potential providence. As they are - purportedly - based on real Cambrians that once lived, they aren't worshipped as gods, per se.

Economic Ideologies: Mercantilism, leaning to capitalism
Major Production: Industrial equipment
Economic Description: Leading the world in financial services, resource extraction, and global trade, Cambria maintains a powerhouse economy that is increasingly enriched by industrial manufacturing.

Army and Navy Strengths and Weaknesses: Cambria's military is about 1% of their population, which is over 34 million. I haven't expanded that because it's only been a couple of IC years. This means that with all my vast territories to defend, I have only 320,000 regular and reserve forces in my armies and navies combined. The result is that localised garrisons are required to be largely self-reliant across all of Cambria, Canada, Australia, Jamaica, Ivory Coast, and Cambrian Aegypt.

Having the largest navy means being able to cover my disparate regions and their commercial shipping lanes without leaving ports undefended. Discipline means they can fight in formations, maneuver well, and have a low chance of breaking/routing. Well-trained and well-equipped speak for themselves.

National Goals: Maintain the empire
National Issues: Tolerance of modern paganism
National Figures of Interest: High Druid Owainn
National Ambition/Aspirations: Imperial expansion and global prosperity

History: As the northern tribes assaulted and settled a Britannia recently bereft of Roman garrisons, they found a stable and comfortable quality of life and so Roman influence never faded, but instead flourished in its own way.

In the 15th Century, the popularity of Maria Tudoria Elizabeth I was extremely high, but her Privy Council, her Parliament and her subjects thought that the unmarried queen should take a husband; it was generally accepted that, once a queen regnant was married, the husband would relieve the woman of the burdens of head of state. Also, without an heir, the Tudor dynasty would end; the risk of civil war between rival claimants was a possibility if Elizabeth died childless. The first and most ardent suitor was Mary I’s widower Philip II of Spain. However, numerous other suitors from nearly all European nations sent ambassadors to the English court to put forward their suit.

Risk of death came dangerously close in 1564 when Elizabeth caught smallpox, and British destiny forever changed. It is said that in her fever, she experienced a holy visitation from a source no one would ever have suspected, given her moderate yet adamant Protestant views. Elizabeth claimed that Danu, mother goddess to the Tuatha de Danaan – the forerunners of modern Celts – came to her in her hour of greatest peril and told her that the elder gods had returned from their long celestial journey to reclaim the hearts and spirits of their Briton children. Elizabeth quickly recovered and proclaimed the vision a miracle.

The Second War of the Roses followed, with House York rising up with the support of all Christians of the realm, many of them Lancastrian. But a return to the original gods and a renewal of ties to the land was popular among the laymen and more nobles than might have been thought joined the Tudor cause. The Church of England reacted virulently, supporting the Yorkists and declaring Elizabeth and her revived Druidism anathema. In response, Elizabeth decreed the Church to be valid, but no longer the faith of the Crown and State. Popular revolts against the clergy resulted in the Church’s presence being reduced to Yorkist fortifications. In the end, the overwhelming popularity of Druidism resulted in the expunging of the Church of England.

The initial reaction from Rome was one of support for Elizabeth, seen as a scourge against the Protestants. The Vatican believed that Catholicism could be reinvigourated in Britain. Too late, the Pope realised that the movement was strong enough to hold permanent sway over the nostalgic Britons. Having supported the movement at its inception, the Pope could not exactly call for a Crusade – especially given that Rome was greatly occupied with the Holy Land, and that Britain held nothing of geographical or theological importance for Catholicism. Indeed, the pagan artifact Stonehenge became a leading symbol for the Druid revival, something the Vatican wanted no part of. As a result of the successful Druid Movement, Elizabeth conformed readily to the idea that marriage and birth-giving were natural cycles of the gods-given Earth. She married Edwardius Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester, in 1565. After much anticipation and anxiety, Elizabeth finally gave birth to Augustus Tudorius Taliesin I in 1575; Prince Taliesin succeeded his mother to the throne in 1603.

The nation’s identity as a Welsh state of Roman influence was solidified when, in 1599, Prince Taliesin suggested the name Cambria, a Roman version of Cymru, the Welsh name for Wales. The name was officially adopted November 3, 1601, and was declared the national holiday by Queen Elizabeth. Later, the name of the family line would be changed to Rosa, to reflect the Tudor rose. This incited a sweeping change of name for all noble Houses of Cambria, who would not be left out. Native flora and fauna became symbols - and names - for the oldest Houses. After a similar popular Druidic Movement, Ireland joined the United Kingdom of Cambria. Today, Cambria spans the world and is often informally referred to as the Cambrian Empire.

Full Nation Name : The Italian Empire ; Imperium Italiae ; The Empire of Italia
Flag: Imperial Flag.
Majority/Official Culture : Mix of Roman and Italian.
Territorial Core : I'm on the map already; the Italian peninsula, plus Croatia and that general weird navy-blue thing.
Territorial Claim : Claims colonies in Africa, and has ambitions to reclaim the 'Western Roman Empire'.
Capital City : Rome. It's where Rome is, of course.
Population : Approx. 30 million (give or take a few).

Government Type : Semi-Constitutional Monarchy.
Government Ideology/Policies : Imperialist, expansionist, militarist, etc.; Italia believes in having a strong military doctrine to have a strong empire.
Government Focus : Italia's focus mainly lies in its culture, military and economy; it has a proud culture based on the Roman Empire and considers itself the successor to the Western Roman Empire.
Head of State : His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Antonius Quintus III
Head of Government : See above.
Government Description : The Italian Empire has a semi-constitutional monarchy; the Imperial Senate (unicameral) is proportionally elected on its political parties and such based on how the voters throughout the Empire vote. The Italian Empire is a unitary state. The Emperor has supreme executive powers; both in regards to military, domestic and abroad (he can create treaties without necessary approval from the Senate, unless the Senate performs a 3/4ths vote of vetoing the treaty). The Empire is also influenced by the Catholic Church, though this influence is dwindling as Paganism is on the rise.

Majority/State Religion : Catholic Christianity (officially).
Religious Description : The Catholic Church holds some level of influence in both the Senate and with the Emperor, but this influence is dwindling as Paganism is on the rise. It is otherwise basically Catholic Christianity.

Economic Ideologies : Capitalism, borderline laissez-faire when it comes to doing trade with the Eastern Roman Empire.
Major Production : Industrial goods.
Economic Description : The Italian economy is very capitalist and has very little government intervention; corporations make donations to the Imperial family as well as to the Senate to remain in their favor, and influence politics to some degree.

Army Strength : Well equipped, efficient, well trained, somewhat large. The Imperial Legions have some of the greatest weapons available and go through a rigorous training process; they are efficient in that they can fight using a large number of strategies, depending on what their mission is. The Legions are also in the strong hundred thousands, and have some of the best riflemen in Europe.
Army Weakness : While large for a nation its size, the Italian Empire's army is smaller than others. For example, while it may command a few hundred thousand, nearly a million, soldiers; East Roman and other larger empires may command more, or other empires have a higher population than it does. The Legions are also very reliant upon modern strategies and ways of thinking in regards to how they use their artillery and such; therefor, using different methods (whether newer or older) can sometimes confuse them. They also require a large amount of production to keep them equipped and such. The Legions also use 'modernized' uniforms; meaning they very rarely, if ever, wear any 'old style' armor. This means that, while they can - at times - out number or out class some groups, if an armored, shielded legion storms them with spears, the Legions are going to have a very bad day.
Naval Strength : Large/strong ships, large navy, quality weapons/equipment. The Imperial Fleets are relatively infamous for its ships being built large, oftentimes requiring at least a hundred-man crews. The Imperial Fleets have a few hundred ships under its command, all of which are well armed with top-of-the-line cannons and are relatively well armored. All of this combined makes the Imperial Fleets a terrifying force on the seas.
Naval Weakness : The Imperial Fleets, though strong, need frequent refueling and they struggle to wander too far out of the Mediterranean. This is mostly because of their rather large size and their need to refuel, rearm, etc. The Imperial Fleets cannot handle a naval war of attrition for too long, outside of the Mediterranean. This means that the Italian Empire is more likely to war with a nation in the Mediterranean Sea with its navy than outside it. Although Imperial ambitions do allow this limit to occur with regards to say, Gaul or Hispania, the Britannian Issue is one major thing that may be affected by the Fleets being almost incapable of existing outside of the Mediterranean.
Further Military Description : N/A.

National Goals : Recreate the Western Roman Empire, strengthen relations with the Eastern Romans, consolidate power, increase military power.
National Issues : Catholicism vs Paganism, Church vs Government, Socialism/Republicanism vs Monarchism, among others.
National Figures of Interest : The Emperor, of course; Pope Pius IX.
National Ambition/Aspirations : The Italian Empire is driving towards being able to reclaim all "lost territories" from when it was once the Western Roman Empire.

History :
  • 27 B.C. - Roman Empire established.
  • 306-337 AD - The Reign of Constantine the Great; Rome becomes Christian. The Roman Empire also splits into West and East.
  • 476 AD - Fall of the Western Roman Empire; abdication of the Last Emperor of West-Rome.
  • 477-490 AD - The Era of Strife; multiple Kingdoms vying for power, with the Church trying to hold everything together but not seizing power due to some anti-Christian feelings in some minor Kingdoms. Southern Italy is put under occupation of the East-Romans, forming the Kingdom of Italia.
  • 540 AD - The Kingdom of Italia emerges victorious on the Italian Peninsula; it remains a province of Eastern Rome for a number of years.
  • 560 AD - The Kingdom of Italia's decisive victory against the barbarians who invaded and destroyed it.
  • 575 AD - The Kingdom of Italia begins gaining autonomy as it begins expanding along the Peninsula and gaining more of its current territory.
  • 602 AD - With war for East-Rome and new barbarians and others attempting to invade Italia, the Kingdom is forced to fend for itself and - eventually - gains victory, securing its territories.
  • 624 AD - The Kingdom of Italia gains independence; the last Roman forces are removed.
  • 680 AD - The Kingdom of Italia continues expanding, almost gaining its current borders; the Italian Empire is formed.
  • 1200 AD - End of the Neo-Caesarian Dynasty; Beginning of the Second Augustine Dynasty
  • 1300 AD - The Catholic Church's power reaches its height in Italia.
  • 1454 AD - The Italian Empire continues expanding, reaching its current borders.
  • 1500-1550 AD - The Italian Empire enters reformations in its governance; the current Imperial government's semi-constitutional monarchy forms.
  • 1600 AD - The Italian Empire makes contact with the Eastern Roman Empire once again; it begins trading and forms an alliance with the East Romans.
  • 1650 AD - Using Eastern Roman support, the Italian Empire begins to modernize its education system and the likes using long-lost knowledge.
  • 1740 AD - Death of Emperor Julius Quintus; Antonius Quintus I begins his reign. Antonius Quintus I begins to increase infrastructure in the nation; building better bridges, railways and generally strengthening the unity of the Italian Empire. The Italian Empire continues advancing and playing 'catch up' with Eastern Rome.
  • 1790 AD - Death of Antonius Quintus I; Antonius Quintus II becomes Emperor. Antonius Quintus II continues his father's work of uniting Italia further by not only increasing infrastructure, but he begins working on educational standards and bettering the economy. His policies work out, mostly due to taking advice from economists (hired by corporations). The Italian Empire has nearly modernized its military; both army and navy.
  • 1840 AD - Death of Antonius Quintus II; Antonius Quintus III becomes Emperor. Antonius Quintus III is the youngest Emperor of Italia, at age 19 when he becomes Emperor. His father had died of a stroke at age 61. His mother, Maria Caesar, died shortly after of a heart attack. Emperor Antonius Quintus III's young age is believed to be responsible for his 'modernistic' style of thinking, as well as the cause for his thinking similarly to the modern generation of Italians. Emperor Quintus III also states that he is not actually a Catholic, but a Pagan. This causes some controversy in the Imperial government, but Antonius Quintus III remains Emperor. The Catholic Church looks nervously to the future, under a Pagan Emperor. The Italian Empire has almost completely modernized overall, although, the Eastern Romans are still quite a bit more advanced than Italia.
  • Present - The Italian Empire is strengthening its military as well as trying to become better friends with the East-Romans. The Church is starting to lose power as Pagan temples begin cropping up. Emperor Quintus III turns 49, and his first child, Antonia Valentina (of House Valentino, her mother's house), is named by him as his heir at age 16. Many are intrigued by this, as this is the first time that a first child who was also a first daughter was named to be future Empress of Italia; she would also be the second overall Empress of Italia who ruled directly using the Emperor's powers. This would also mean a transition of power from House Augustine (and an end of the Second Augustine Dynasty with her as its Last Empress) to House Valentino, which would subsequently begin the New Valentinian Dynasty. House Valentino had ancestors who once ruled both as Emperors of the Western Roman Empire, and ones who ruled the Eastern Roman Empire. It was an interesting declaration by Emperor Quintus III, and many are intrigued as to how the Imperial Princess will rule when she takes power in the future. The Italian Empire has its current level of technology; still behind Eastern Rome, but far better off than most of Europe.

Tag, this look interesting...is Iberia and Morroco open?
Kiev, throught the eons of history, has endured everything the world has to bring it down. From the heathen mongol and their barbarity, Polish-Lithuanian and its Catholic feudalism and oppression, Russian empire, Nazi Germany, and even the Godless Soviet. But today, Kiev still prove itself to the world that it would stand forever! As the city of the Rus, Holy land of Orthodox Christianity, and bastion of Democracy in the Eastern Europe.
So with that, may Kiev will never perish--For God is with us!

New Zealand is open, as both of its previous claimants have not returned. I wouldn't mind getting my mitts on it. :)

Or you can run Australia for me and make a play for New Zealand. :)

Okay, so tag. When the map is updated, please tell me. My possible territories are below.

Yemen, Oman, Saudi Arabia (interior, as well as the Hejaz region), U.A.E., Bahrain, Qatar, areas around the Strait of Hormuz, areas around the Bab-el-Mandeb, the Horn of Africa including Somalia, Eritrea, Djibuti, Zanzibar (my historical territories of the parts of Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Burundi, and Malawi, but I would like to get a bit farther into them, and to include parts of the eastern coast of South Africa), Madagascar (historically including Mayotte and the Comoros), Reunion island, Seychelles archipelago, Mauritius, Socotra, the Maldives, Chagos archipelago, Kuria Muria island, and Masira island (at least half of these islands and archipelagos are pretty close to Madagascar, and Arabia and such, and a lot of these are smaller claims, or I'll only have parts).

When the map is up, or if someone already has claims on some of these, I will narrow it down some. Please, don't be afraid to speak up, but also remember that if I control something like Madagascar, Comoros and Mayotte go along with it.

These are also not my final claims. I may shrink them without someone else telling me my claims include theirs.
Depression kind of goes along with not being liked, especially when you ask for help, and don't get it. Remember that, okay? There are people who need someone, even if in a small way. Don't avoid them because of a misunderstanding, them having a bad day, and definitely not because everyone else does it. Even if it's just a fifteen minute conversation about nothing, it might help.

Full Nation Name : The United Republics of Ruthenia
Majority/Official Culture : Russian is the majority. However, Russian culture is in and of itself a Frankenstein's Monster. There are Latinized High Ruthenian cultural centers such as Novgorod proper and Odessa, deeply Slavic/Eurasian regions like Muscow, and more Nordicized Ingria and Pskov. Perm and Ekaterinburg are notable for its high volume of German settlers, and places like Krasnodar have a Caucasian twang. Now, on the whole, the Ruthenian Republics devoutly follow the Church of Constantinople, and there are Latin overtones in every facet of life, from the use of Latin characters rather than Cyrillic, to the customs of the urban elite. This is what binds the patchwork together, and this is what creates an umbrella of Russian/Ruthenian culture under which every subculture falls. That said, there are also pockets of Turkic, Ugric, and other peoples. There are also substantial pockets of German settlers, especially in the East.
Territorial Core :
Image

Territorial Claim : Turkestan, Xinjiang, perhaps Tyre, more lucrative Siberian lands, etc.
Capital City : Novgorod/Great Novgorod/Veliky Novgorod
Population : About 62 million

Government Type : Federalized Republic
Government Ideology/Policies : Varies by composite Republic, but liberal-conservatism, cultural traditionalism, and republicanism reign supreme. Agrarianism, populism, and monarchism are all found intermittently within the United Republics of Ruthenia.
Government Focus : As of right now, the federal government is mostly focused on reforming the state to have a centralized military, educational system, set of common laws, and a strict inter-state commercial codes. Also, the government still has railroad fever.
Head of State : Knyaz (Grand Prince) Alexander II of Muscovy
Head of Government : Posadnik (Loosely "Grand Mayor") Ivar Antoniev
Government Description : Oh boy. So, the United Republics of Ruthenia is divided into many composite republics, each based typically around a city(Pskov, Novgorod, Muscovy, Ryazan, Vladimir, etc) with varying forms of governance. Most composite republics are just that, republics, but others are knyazdoms or some other form of petty monarchy, or some combination of the two. Each republic has quite a bit of autonomy, especially with social matters. However, there is an over-arching federal government that supersedes all. It is made up of a unicameral legislature, executive branch, and judiciary. To break it down by branch, the legislature is the Veche, which is made up one elected or appointed representative from each metropolitan area in the nation. The executive branch is very powerful, and is lead by the Posadnik who is elected popularly for a 5 year term, ruling both the city-republic of Novgorod and the entire federal government. Also in the executive branch is the Grand Prince of Muscovy, who serves as a figurehead for the nation, and also rules the city-republic of Muscovy, a leftover of the Novgorodian practice of borrowing princes for ceremonial purposes. The judiciary is entirely run by legislature-appointed Tysyatskys and the Church. It's complicated and messy, but the government as it is was created in 1472 after the Battle of Shelon and subsequent unification of Novgorod and Muscovy, outlined in the Ulozhenie.

Majority/State Religion : Roman Orthodoxy
Religious Description : Basically, everyone is a super devout Christian, practicing the liturgy in Latin and all that. The Metropolitan of Ruthenia falls below Constantinople, giving the Romans a lot of sway over the nation, especially the military and judiciary.

Economic Ideologies : Mostly free market capitalism, with some populist agrarianism and mixed market found in some republics.
Major Production : Cereal grains are produced in vast amounts, but the industrial centers produce large amounts of steel, linens, ship and locomotive parts, furniture, guns, and other manufactured goods. Whaling is on the decline, though it still occurs rather frequently out of Arkhangelsk and Murmansk.
Economic Description: On account of the decentralized state of the nation, the economy is very diversified and inter-reliant. Novgorod, the founding republic of this state has always been based around trade, especially trade with the Hanseatic League. This lead to increased contact with the West(Germany, Burgundy, Scandinavia, Britain), which helped to modernize the nation. With the expansion of Novgorod came the expansion of modern thought, which lead to the early abolition of serfdom and introduction of Novgorod's vibrant republican system. This all cottage industry to take off quite rapidly at the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, as large food production, transportation networks(rivers and canal systems), a free people, and vast resources were already in existence. And slowly but surely, the cottage industries evolved into mills, then factories, found mostly in cities near resources or transportation routes. By 1870, Pskov, Novgorod, the Volga Watershed, Rostov, Perm, and Odessa have become the industrial heartland of the nation, with growing industry in Kazan, Krasnodar, and more. It is, however, important to note that industrialization has not hit the nation evenly, with White Ruthenia/Minsk, Kiev, Muscovy, and almost all the rest of the republics entirely dependent upon agriculture and mineral extraction. This has lead to the start of a mass migration to the cities, as well as agrarian populist movements. While serfdom is not banned, it seems as though the peasantry is trapped, while urban Ruthenia advances to become a major industrial center for Europe. Railroad projects are underway between all major cities, with the most important lines already complete. Oh, and there is fishing/whaling/shipbuilding and crap located out of Arkhangelsk, Murmansk, and Dnepropetrovsk.

Army Strength : The Army is made up of roughly 1% of the population, which is approximately 620,000. Of this, about 120,000 are Cossack and Turk irregulars, 200,000 are in the Federal Army, and the rest are conscripted peasants in local militias tied to the governments of composite republics, for the express purpose of defending those republics and their frontiers. During wartime, they may be placed under the command of the Federal Army. The Federal Army has decent training, high mobility, good armaments, and the local militias tend to be better at asymmetrical warfare and attrition, rather than offensive operations.
Army Weakness : The Army is full of weaknesses. The best fighting forces are irregulars, and the brunt of the military are levied peasants who have loyalty to their local government. These troops also have jobs, varying degrees of training and preparation, and are overall slow and ineffective in conventional warfare. Moreover, many local militias operate using the vernacular Ruthenian, rather than Latin or German like other groups and the Federal Military. Militias have no standardization, and simply cannot be used for invasions/offensive warfare. The Federal Army and Cossacks can, though their numbers are small for such a large nation, which has the chance of spreading them too thin.
Naval Strength : The Federal Navy is made up of about 30,000 sailors serving out of Odessa in the Black Sea, 15,000 out of Astrakhan in the Caspian Sea, 5,000 in the Arctic Sea and a further 10,000 in the Mediterranean utilizing temporary ports mostly out of Rome. The Navy is actually a decent fighting force, that is entirely professional, and follows the maritime tradition started by Novgorod in the Middle Ages. It is charged with mostly defending the waterways and shipping routes of Ruthenian goods, but it also does some power projection, especially in the Baltic and Mediterranean.
Naval Weakness : The Navy is not large, and each portion functions as a separate entity due to geographical isolation. This limits mobility and strategic operation, especially in places like the Arctic Ocean and Baltic, where in large portions of the fleet must sail inland or into the Atlantic anyway. Aside from this, the navy is not nearly as large as those of competitors, and ports are very limited. There are also no naval reserve forces.
Further Military Description : The military utilizes conscription for the most part, with irregular forces being the most elite(trained using the Roman method) and professional.

National Goals : Secure a permanent port in the Mediterranean or Middle East for trading purposes. Expand Eastward, into Turkestan. Solve economic disparity. Unify the state under a stronger federal government. Increase ties with Rome. Become Stronker.
National Issues : Shitty military set up, rising income inequality creating political unrest, mass migration to urban areas, assimilation of German settlers, issues associated with industrialization and urbanization such as pollution and crappy working/living conditions.
National Figures of Interest : I'll keep thinking about this.
National Ambition/Aspirations : Expanding beyond the Urals and reaching Korea's empire. Becoming more culturally Roman.

History :
(History is the same up until the 14th century, aside from Novgorod being Latinized rather than Hellenized)
1304: Mikhail of Tver and his governors perished in a highway robbery while travelling to strongarm Novgorod, leading to Tver falling into a succession crisis. Novgorod politically expanded to Tver in the same manner that they did to Pskov.
1304-1397: Novgorodian trade with the rest of the Rus, and with Western Europe, becoming the biggest flax and fur producer on the continent. This time also came with minor class warfare, German immigration, and Eastward expansion, as was found in most of the city's history.
1397: Having moved closer to Tver rather than to Muscovy at the dawn of the 13th century, Novgorod was able to prevent the Muscovite princes from launching incursions into their land and the Dvina, or from using political leverage as princes in the same manner as they did IRL.
1398-1460: Tensions mounted with Muscovy, as the burgeoning empire expanded towards the peaceful Republic. This lead Novgorod to go looking for help.
1461: Marfa Boretskaya secured military support from Tver, Vladimir, Ryazan, Astrakhan, and Pskov in the coming battle against Muscovy. Having secured its sovereignty and increased its sphere against Muscovy, Novgorod had the upper hand. The Poles had been notably left out of the alliance, which pleased the commoners very much.
1462-1472: With the Treaty of Yazhelbitsy having never been signed, Novgorod was able to make the first blow against their rival. Having secured food enough from their allies, Novgorod made swift work of Muscovy, utilizing their professional military force and German mercenaries. Marching over frozen marshes, Muscovy proper was sacked, though Spring came early that year, leaving the Novgorodian military force trapped South of the Shelon River. This lead to brutal attrition, with conflict raging for months, giving the Muscovites time to regain strength and leaving Novgorod vulnerable. This situation had the adverse affect of causing the war to continue for two more years, ending finally in 1464, at the final Battle of Shelon River. Thus a constitution was drafted for the unification of the states that had been involved in the conflict, with a Muscovite being accepted for the first time in a century as the Grand Prince of Novgorod as a peace offering. This was a success, but it would not be until 1472 that conflict in Muscovy would be quelled and unification would be complete.
1473-1600: Trading grew and expanded within the Rus, and Latinization of all composite Republics took off, especially as those nations under Novgorod liberalized. Latin Characters became commonplace with the introduction of book printing, and in 1600, serfdom was banned in its entirety.
1601-1614: A series of brutal civil wars rocked Ruthenia, as an aftershock of the abolition of serfdom.
1616-1700: Economic decline struck Novgorod as its furs and flax became unimportant. The government continued to encourage expansion, in an attempt to flood the market, but it only degraded the value of the cash crop.
1701-1750: With the nation in dire straits, a new hope arose with the agriculture revolution, and a major boom in the productivity of Ruthenian farms. From this came the birth of the industrial revolution in Ruthenia.
1751-1800: A series of wars of expansion were fought against Turkic tribes to the East, allowing for Ruthenia to reach the Urals. Also during this time, Odessa and Nevskygrad(Petrograd) were built as new port cities for increased trade. Along with the industrial revolution came an increase in canal and road building, vastly increasing the viability of Ruthenia on the international marketplace.
1801-1870: Various wars of expansion fought, with a few urban uprisings by the working poor. The most notable conflict was t he Dagestan War against Caucasian Muslims, which lasted almost 50 years. Railroad construction began, and the political system as it stands today took shape, with progressivism and populism on the rise, and demands for more political freedom being granted. Novgorod is set to continue on its path both internationally and internally, should the political system not implode.

Ugh... I think I'm going to stay away for a few days, but if possible, may I reserve this land? I guess I'm just going to reserve it and hope I'm back before the reservation isn't valid anymore.
