A

Axial - A class of trade defender cruiser used primarily by the Central Squadron of the Fleurien Defence Forces. Also the name of the lead ship of that class.

"Atentigo" - Esperanto translation of a tag used in Red Mantevin mission records to indicate an event of interest in the battlespace.

B

Battleplate - A naval term referring to an extremely large warship (>1 km in any dimension), with the exception that dreadnoughts may exceed 1 km but are usually not considered battleplates. 'Battleplate' does not imply any specific class; it is simply a catch-all.

C

Cara, Marcus - Also known as Libereco Unua de Kastelo, Cara is a Mantarien political dissident and former FDF officer affiliated with the Red Mantevins. He is believed to currently be in command of the Red Mantevin battleplate Kastelo.

Central Courier - A high-circulation news service focusing primarily on Fleurien and Paixois news.

Central Culture Authority - An agency of the Fleurien Republic responsible for the designation and preservation of cultural items of enduring interest.

Cerebrations on Diplomacy - Formal short title of a work by Nykwanna Francois and Renee Jean Senutila which acted as an extensive manual for Federation diplomats. Cerebrations continues to be prescribed by the Mantarien Chancellery in the curricula of some of its academies, but is largely considered outdated elsewhere.

Charlotte - The controlling intelligence of the Red Mantevin battleplate Kastelo.

• Commanded Red Mantevin forces in the First Battle of New Hyperion.

Chipping Cleghorn - A levied Fleuri Defence Forces corvette.

• Deployed to Hitharu to investigate the Plague of Hitharu.

Couronien - From Couronne.

Couronien Post-Telegram - A news service focusing primarily on the city of Couronne.

Couronne - The Federation capital, located on Fleuri.

Couronnois - Of the Federation. From the name of the capital city, Couronne. Usually a legal term, but increasingly a demonym.

"Crab" - A powered armour system favoured of Red Mantevins.

Cultural Preservation Corps - A staff division of the Central Library of the Mantar Primarium. Officially its mission is to locate, designate and preserve items of interest from all cultures; in practice, its area of specialty is Mantarien culture.

Cultural Preservation Society - Officially His Royal Highness Prince Leonid's Society for the Preservation of Paixois Culture; due to protocol technicalities, it is usually easier and just as acceptable to call it the Cultural Preservation Society.

Curas - A term in Mantarien Esperanto, derived from kiu iras ('one who goes'). Refers to a Mantarien citizen who took Federal Service rather than serving in the Mantarien domestic squadron in order to fulfil their national service obligation.

D

Date formats - As the Couronnois Federation consists of a number of worlds with different calendars, it uses a standardised format consisting of years and seconds. A standard year is 31,557,600 seconds long. This is written as yyyyy.ss sss sss (for instance, 12345.00 000 001). An alternative format uses the five-digit year number followed by the percentage of the year that has elapsed, to one hundredth of a percent precision. This is written as yyyyy.pppp (for instance, 12345.0001). One hundredth of a percent of a year is 3,155.76 seconds - roughly 52 minutes, 36 seconds.

Standard dates are not usually used in speech (reference is made to planetary calendars) but do appear in computing contexts and are required for some formal statements.

Dernier Repos - A Federation world.

Dreadnought - A naval term referring to the highest-tonnage ships in regular production of any sort. May encompass a variety of actual class designators (e.g. heavy cruiser, battleship) but is usually used only for primarily direct-fire combatants (i.e., not carriers).

Earl of Sumrak - Courtesy title of the eldest son of the Prince of Paix.

Embassy Row - Official short name of the Ambassadorial District of the City of Couronne, where foreign embassies to the Federation are housed.

FDF - Fleurien Defence Forces.

FDF SIGINTSERV - Operating abbreviation: Fleurien Defence Forces Signals Intelligence Service.

Federal Service pin - A decoration issued by Mantarien Chancellery Defence indicating that the wearer, who is Mantarien, has served in a Federation Levy force (in practical terms, usually the FDF).

Federation Defence Liaison - Often abbreviated FDL. Intermediary between Federation state services; commander of all levies.

Federation Foreign Office - External affairs division of the Couronnois Federation.

Federation State Archives - State office overseeing storage of important items and documents. Also oversees the State Historical and Cultural Archives of the Couronnois Federation (SHACAR), with which "Federation State Archives" is often considered synonymous.

Fleuri - A Federation world.

Fleurien - From Fleuri.

Fleurien Republic - Semi-sovereign government of Fleuri.

FSA - Federation State Archives.

Hashem - A Federation world.

Homeship - A class of battleplate built by the fugitive Red Mantevin terrorists.

• Fought as a freebooter in Operation Brimstone.

Les Rouges - See "Red Mantevins", under R. Notably, the use of this term imparts a class connotation on the user, signifying high social rank, as opposed to "Reds" or "Red Mantevins", which is considered neutral.

Levies - With the exception of those specifically exempted, Federation worlds are required to second a certain percentage of military assets and personnel to the Federation Defence Liaison; those units so seconded effectively constitute the Federation armed forces. A 'levy' is all units from an individual planet (e.g. the Fleurien levy); a 'levied' unit is one which is part of a levy.

Libereco Unua de Kastelo - Assumed name of a Mantarien Couronnois political dissident affiliated with the Red Mantevins. See "Cara, Marcus" (under C, above) for details.

LR - Operating abbreviation: Lane Route. Refers to trade lanes that exit Federation space but are of interest to Couronnois defence command. An affixed phonetic letter indicates a specific route - 'LR-Baker'. Further letters and numbers can indicate a specific system on that route - 'LR-Baker-A-1', for example.

Mantar - A Federation world.

Mantar domestic squadron - The semi-formal defence forces of Mantar.

Mantar Primarium - An institution of higher learning located on Mantar, co-sponsored by the House of Sleeman and the Mantarien Regent's Fund.

Mantarien - Of or pertaining to Mantar.

Mantarien Regency - The government, such as it is, of Mantar. Headed by the Regent of Mantar.

Mantevin - From Mantiers.

Mantevins, Red - See "Red Mantevins", under R.

Mantiers - The capital district of Mantar.

Meyrin - A Mantar domestic squadron Trade Defender, registration MGV-303.

• Deployed to investigate a strange signal in an unknown system.

Metropolitan Government of Couronne - Government of the city of Couronne.

ODL - Office of the Defence Liaison, meaning the Federation Defence Liaison.

ODL SICO - Office of the Defence Liaison, Signals Intelligence Coordination Office. The Federation counterpart to national services such as FDF SIGINTSERV.

OPNAME - Operational name. A name given to something, typically to a place, when the permanent and/or native name is unknown, unusable or nonexistent, or when the permanent and/or native name must be obfuscated for security reasons.

Paix - A Federation world.

Paixois - From Paix.

Paix, State of - The government of Paix. Constitutional monarchy led by the Prince of Paix, governed by a Prime Minister.

Peacemaker - A class of line cruiser used primarily by the Fleurien Defence Forces.

Platinum Deep - A location on Dernier Repos.

Prime Minister of the Couronnois Federation - The head of state and government of the Couronnois Federation.

Principality of Mantiers - Traditionally the crown estate of the Head of the House of Sleeman.

Racia - Name given by the Red Mantevins to a captured FDF Peacemaker-class line cruiser.

Red Mantevins - A technophilic terrorist group which fought for the secession of Mantar. Suppressed in Federation space, but operating elsewhere.

Regent of Mantar - Head of state and government of the Mantarien Regency. Prior to the democratic reforms of Mantar, Regent was a monarchic title held by the Head of the House of Sleeman; now it is a democratic title regulated by an electoral college.

Ruling Conclave - The leadership of the Red Mantevins.

Sabanayev - A noble house of Fleurien origin. Princes of Paix.

Shibuya Consolidated - A conglomerate of Paixois origin operating in fields including chemicals, electronics, telecommunications equipment, aviation and space exploration. Founded by Walter Shibuya (assumed name).

"Shibuya, Walter" - Assumed name of a political dissident of purportedly Terran origin who received political asylum from the State of Paix, settled there, and founded what is now Shibuya Consolidated.

Solaria - A Federation world.

Solarian - Of Solaria. This is distinct from Solarien, the legally recognised standard term, which has little currency and is used by few, even in official contexts.

Sleeman - A noble house of Mantarien origin, with a significant presence there. See also Xiang Sleeman, under X.

Sleeman Artologies - A group of locations on Mantar.

St Mary Mead - A levied Fleuri Defence Forces trade defence cruiser.

Temple Lands - A national park located on Solaria.

"Trade Defender" - A specific family of vessels of non-specific class (approximately frigate or light cruiser tonnage) built for the Mantarien domestic defence squadron. Distinguished by the use of Capital Letters.

Trade defender - Refers to those naval ships built specifically to ensure the free and secure flow of internal Federation intersystem trade. Classes of trade defender vary wildly depending on builder and client, but the current archetype is the Axial class, built for the Fleurien Defence Forces.

Vengema - Name given by the Red Mantevins to a captured FDF Peacemaker-class line cruiser.

Xiang Sleeman - See also "Sleeman", under S. Differentiating the two, there are many Sleeman descendants and thus the name is simply noteworthy rather than particularly meaningful; "Xiang Sleeman" is rigidly controlled and implies substantive noble or even royal rank.

Xiang Sleeman, York - A Sleeman Prince of Mantiers who was democratically elected Regent of Mantar.
