Rochester Falls
Hundreds of employees gathered in Rochester Falls outside of Vancouvia's chief oil company headquarters today in a show of protest. Narwhalia Oil and Natural Gas is expected to lay off roughly 60% of its workforce in the coming weeks as their offshore oil platforms run dry.
"We simply have exhausted all oil in the sea south of Independence Island," said a spokesmen for NONG. "Temporary layoffs are necessary until we can locate other sources."
NONG, a public company with 49% government ownership, has over 4,500 employees in Vancouvia. The layoffs come as a massive shock to the workforce, who had no knowledge of the growing shortage.
"I have three kids to feed at home. They expect me to just go find another job?" said Jackson Bawlings, a platform worker. "This has been my whole life for the past 20 years. Now they throw us out to the wolves like we're garbage."
Congress is said to be planning a recovery package that will help to transition the thousands of workers into other energy sector occupations. Meanwhile, nuclear company Soldotna World Energy, one of NONG's chief competitors, has plans for two more nuclear reactors to be completed by 2018.
