Generic ale to drown generic angst

IC: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=391926

Welcome to RPG: The Call to Protagonism. This RP is an RPG with complex game mechanics such as classes, stats, and skills. There are GMs who will direct the story and give the players choices to make. The players build up their characters in their quest to save the generic medievalish land.

The setting is as intentionally generic as possible. The world of Mlurn is inhabited by tropes and repetitive concepts, aping such favorites as Dungeons and Dragons, Lord of the Rings, Elder Scrolls, Infinity Blade, and all manner of equally cut and past medieval fantasy stories. The setting is comedic and satirical and definitely doesn't take itself seriously. The inhabitants are aware of things like gold hiding in breakable objects and gear in animals much like we are aware of the laws of physics. They are also aware that you, the protagonists, are here to save them from obvious evil. They can tell from your detailed faces and the fact that you have more than three things to say when interacted with.

The Setting

Long ago in the mythical land of Mlurn, the four races lived in separate kingdoms. There were the regal elfs, the warlike orcs, the industrious dwarves, and the humans who did whatever. That's right only humans were complex individuals. All the elves were regal just because they were elves, and all the orcs were violent just because they were orcs, and all dwarves were industrious just because they were dwarves. Only humans aren't literal racial caricatures. Anyways the four kingdoms lived in peace and harmony, except when they were killing each other. Which was a lot. Eventually the dwarves had the brilliant idea of building a wall around the cities so they wouldn't have to see each other anymore, and they made the orcs pay for it. The wall was successful and there was peace between the four high fantasy stereotypes. Like a deeply abusive relationship however, the races realized they missed each other and they all tore down the wall. They then came together in unity.

They formed the Empire, the first centralized government in Mlurn. The Empire brought prosperity to the land. Before the economy was largely decentralized and feudalistic. The centralization of the Empire allowed resources to be exchanged over a larger area due to a centralized trade network and state built roads. The creation of a universal currency further increased trade while trade laws protected buyers and sellers from abuse. The state funded military provided protection for traders. Increased trade allowed for more advanced economic specialization as more resources became available and they became more abundant. This lead to the creation of mercantilist policies which... wait why am I explaining this to you? You come here to get away from school. Basically the Empire was great for everyone and brought Mlurn out of the middle ages.

At the height of the Empire's popularity however came the rifts. Appearing in the sky across the land, the rifts caused armies of demonic creatures to attack the Empire. They terrorized the land and brought destruction wherever they went. Finally from the rifts emerged Mizerax, the mad god. Mizerax declared that the world of Mlurn had violated the most important rule of any fantasy RPG, that the setting be inexplicably stuck in the middle ages. The economy was too advanced and the serfs were too learned for his tastes. Mizerax waged war on Mlurn, his demonic armies overwhelming the Empire. Things didn't look good.

In the Empire's darkest hour however, multiple brave souls rose against the oppression. These legendary men and women retrieved ancient artifacts of power and used them to form the prophesied legendary armor that would defeat the mad god, the Armor of Plot. With this armor the men and women became the greatest heroes of all, protagonists. They fought against Mizerax and finally defeated the mad god. Though only one hero was alive in the end he drove the demons back into the rifts and saved the land. Unfortunately the Empire collapsed anyways. The economy was shot from all the demon douchery and nation building is harder than punching demons. Ultimately Mlurn went back into feuding kingdoms, but they honored the heroes who saved them. Every ten years they came together for a celebration. People would compete in various challenges, and the winner would be declared a hero. They were able to wear the Armor of Plot until the next celebration.

During one such celebration some two centuries later the rifts reappeared. Once more the demonic armies appeared to wage war on Mlurn. The hero of the celebration heroically fled from the demons, and then heroically lived the rest of his life in the countryside. Heroically. Before doing so however he separated the Armor of Plot back into pieces and hid them so that the demons could never find them.

Though Mizerax never reappeared, the demonic army of the mad god subjugated Mlurn. In the mad god's place is a mysterious figure known only as the God King. The God King demands occasional tribute from the kingdoms but otherwise allows them to be autonomous. Meanwhile the demonic armies scour the land looking for the pieces of the armor, knowing that it is the only thing that can stop them. Though the future of Mlurn doesn't look good, most people are fine with things. 99.99% of the population is happy to pay tribute and live their lives in peace. 99.99% of the population will never know the satisfaction of morally justified violence, or breaking random crap in search of gold, or finding wearable gear in the bodies of dead animals. 99.99% of the population will never try to find the Armor of Plot to defeat the God King. 99.99% of the population will never become protagonists. For the .01% who will rise against the God King, the future of Mlurn depends on you.

The Culture

The people of Mlurn inhabitant a medievalish society that sort of looks like France/England/Spain/Denmark. It's like the middle ages because most RPGs are, but some stuff is different. Women are in the military, people don't all have fifteen kids, people live longer than fifty five, women can own land, etc. Just be glad you live in a society with modern medicine and enlightenment ideals RL.

The four races have intermingled in many cities, but also have cities largely dominated by one race or another. They all have similar architecture and all speak the same language because it saves processing power they're really smart. The demons on the other hand are clad in all black, have spiky crap everywhere, and they're always slobbering on things. You know obvious evil kind of stuff.

Rules

1. No godmodding. Godmodding is here defined as taking actions on behalf of other players without their prior consent, taking massive world changing actions without clearance from myself, and assuming that your attempt to affect another player will automatically succeed.
2. Be nice
3. Keep things PG-13
4. Any player who is absent for more than a week without notice shall meet a horrible fate. Your character will become a generic helper, with generic lines! "Ah an adventurer! Do you wish to buy something?"

Classes

Every character can select a class, which basically determines how you play. There are also advanced lasses you can specialize into as the RP progresses. We'll get into that later and more classes and advanced classes can be added if you want them.

Arrow Guy - Hawkeye? Green Arrow? Legolas? Hunger Games? The girl from Brave? Any of these new? No? Anyways you shoot pointy sticks at enemies with your bow.

Firestick Guy - You know who uses bow and arrows? Scrubs. Real warriors use arquebuses.

Fighter - You get right up next to your enemy and you kill them with melee weapons. You some kind of sick freak or something?

Bouncer - During your travels you found a powerful elixir with a mystic inscription, st*r**ds. You inject it into a vein and you have supernatural strength. You are now much stronger than a normal person.

A Wizard Did It - Wizards? How do they work? You use magic for various things, from attacking to supporting teammates.

She Turned Me Into A Newt! - The She Turned Me Into A Newt! class is skilled with illusions and confusing enemies.

Rogue - Rogues are stealthy and have many skills to use. They often steal things. Do everyone a favor and avoid playing into stereotypes. Don't take other people's things.

Ninja - Ninjas are very good with stealth. Since the setting is based on Europe, I'm westernizing ninja to stealthy black suited wanker. Stealthy black suited wankers are good with stealth.

Attributes

Attributes are measures of how good your character is with certain actions. They effect actions, skills, and are a general guide of what your character can do. For example a character with low charisma can't be expected to persuade NPCs easily.

Strength - Strength is a measure of a character's power. It determines how powerful your basic attacks are.
Mastery - Mastery on the other hand affects how skilled your character is specifically with skills and bonuses granted by their class. For example an Arrow Guy with high mastery has better Arrow Guy abilities.
Endurance - How much damage you can take before you lose.
Intelligence - Your character's ability to figure things out. Greatly affects NPC actions, but unlike many RPGs this doesn't affect any magic related action. You'll be out of the loop a lot with low intelligence.
Charisma - Charisma is how good your character is at talking to NPCs. NPC interactions are important and charisma allows you to get better ones. Without it you'll have a hard time interacting with them.

Each attribute has four ranks, or four points. You get two points in each attribute for free, and an additional two points to give to any attributes. You can also lower one attribute to raise another.

Strength

1. Super Weenie
2. Human pack mule
3. Beach bully
4. Drawn by Rob Liefeld

Mastery

1. Butterfingers
2. Sidekick
3. 80's sitcom character
4. Fully geared MMO main

Endurance

1. Jellyfish
2. Really tough cockroach
3. Bull
4. Bacterium, the toughest lifeform of all

Intelligence

1. FIRE! FIRE HOT!
2. At least you're pretty
3. Smug genius kid character
4. The Neutrinos are mutating!

Charisma

1. Creeper
2. Substitute Teacher
3. Rising populist
4. Trademarking catch-phrases

Each class has an attribute they get a free point in.

Arrow Guy - Endurance
A Wizard Did It - Intelligence
Rogue - Charisma
Fighter - Strength

Skills

Now things get interesting. Skills are the learned abilities of your character. They can help you out in various ways while adventuring through the world, whether it's combat or general usefulness. Your character can choose three skills from any of the available skills, though some skills are class specific. Mastery is what determines your ability to pull off a skill, though one point in mastery doesn't necessarily mean your skills will never work.

Lockpicking - Allows your character to get into things they shouldn't be, you sneaky bastard.

Stealth - Your character's ability to sneak around without being detected.

Endure Pain - Your character can withstand damage that would do in other people. Can be used in battle, or to withstand interrogation and stress.

Aim - Your character doesn't miss. Any ranged weapon is much more effective with this skill.

Lore Master - Your character is some kind of nerd who has a comprehensive knowledge of Mlurn's history. Will occasionally come in handy. Pick the skill and find out how useful it is.

Armor Penetration - Ignore some of your enemy's endurance when attacking. Can also ignore defensive buffs.

Sweep the Legs - You have no honor and thus will target an enemy's legs in combat. Inflicts a debuff that impairs movement. They are both slower in battle and will not be able to keep up with you in a chase.

Power of Aethurius - Inflict a random debuff on an enemy.

Immune to the Light - Make an enemy completely incapable of seeing you. You can still be detected by other means, and this can only be applied to a single enemy.

Also any questions you have can be answered in a Q/A section here in case I overlooked something.

Name:Mikael Lunden
Race: Human
Age:21
Sex:Often. (Male)
Appearance: Standing at 5' 10'', Mikael looks upon the world through his surprisingly worn eyes, despite his young eyes. His windswept black hair frames his rigged face.

Class:Arrow Guy
Skills: Lockpicking, Stealth, Aim
Attributes:

Strength - 2
Mastery -4
Endurance -3
Intelligence -2
Charisma -2

Bio: Trains with an old mentor. He dies. Young archer guy does hero stuff to help people.
Gear: Cloak, quiver (steel-tipped arrows), bow (110lb longbow)
Theme Song: Optional.
RP Sample:
A tall, average middle aged man wearing a tweed suit was sitting at the table with the other infinites, and on his head sat an Irish Cap. With him, he was carrying a brown, leather suitcase. Putting the suitcase onto the table, he fiddles with the locks. Many noises were heard until finally, a latch was pulled. Opening the suitcase, he pulled out what looked to be a metal box with beeping noises and flashing lights. Pushing a few buttons, the box extended into a small cannon type thing that can easily be held with one hand. The "cannon" had many flashing lights, and beeping, and whirling gears, that served entirely no purpose other than making it look cool. After closing his suticase, Mikael AKA The Tinkerer, pulled a large backpack and put it on, connecting a tube from the "cannon" to the bag.

Afterward, he pulled out a small sack, filled with electronics and tools, and fiddled with the pieces.

Still fiddling with the pieces, Mr. Lunden spoke up, "Mr. Calculator, you asked if anyone helped kittens out of trees? Sure, you can say that is what I did. As for everyone else, I am, er, Mikael Lunden, AKA The Tinkerer. I make things, like this thing." As he said "this thing" he picked up his cannon, and hit it on the table, making a dense metallic noise. "Ano no matter if they are cookies or crumpets, I prefer neither. However, I brought my own refreshments."

With that, he pulled out a tiny microwave, that had a humming noise coming from the back despite there being no cord, from somewhere and put in a dish which he somehow acquired. Turning it on, he waiting for approximately 30 seconds, and pulled out his dish. With a fork, that was built into the machine, Mikael began to eat. "Nothing like some Shepherd's Pie to remind me of home."

Then, he returned to his electronics and continued fiddling with it.

Attributes:

Strength - 2

Charisma - 3

Extra Stuff
Bio: William really hates his life. He's always wanted to be a ninja, but because he's an orphan and was adopted by a bunch of nuns from the local Church of Gnoka (God that No One Knows About), he was raised to be a White Mage. And because he's a White Mage, and doesn't have the most "masculine" appearance, everything keeps calling him a girl! It's not like he's some sort of trap, people know he's a guy, they just make fun of him! Even his theme song sounds like it belongs to some white mage chick. He's just hoping that some terrible event or ancient prophecy will take him away from the boring life of a choir boy.
Gear:
  • Robes of the White Mage
  • Pendant of Gnoka
  • An old book called "White Magic for Dummies"
Theme Song: FEEL the generic!

I love it. But I promised my friend I'd only participate in his RP for its duration, so I'm unfortunately probably going to have to sit this one out. I'll be watching, however.
Where must we go, we who wander this wasteland, in search for our better selves?
In Egypt's sandy silence, all alone,
Stands a gigantic Leg, which far off throws
The only shadow that the Desert knows:—
"I am great OZYMANDIAS," saith the stone,
"The King of Kings; this mighty City shows
"The wonders of my hand." The City's gone,
Nought but the Leg remaining to disclose
The site of this forgotten Babylon.

We wonder, and some Hunter may express
Wonder like ours, when thro' the wilderness
Where London stood, holding the Wolf in chace,
He meets some fragment huge, and stops to guess
What powerful but unrecorded race
Once dwelt in that annihilated place.

Race: Human Purely cosmetic.
Age: 20
Sex: Female
Appearance: Image
Below her stomach she is wearing a slightly shorter-than-average kilt.

Class: Rouge
Skills: Lockpicking and Endure Pain.
Attributes:

Strength - 3
Mastery - 1
Endurance - 3
Intelligence - 2
Charisma - 4

Bio: Caroline spent her childhood, 9-14 years in an orphanage after her father joined the army and her mother was arrested. Caroline was always outgoing and, being the oldest helped kids with crafts, cleaning, etc. Sometimes she'd escape and steal a few pieces of fruit during the night but she was always a good child otherwise. Caroline escaped one night. She fled into the woods. There she found a dead man on the ground, blood pouring out of his iron helmet and his blade stood up on a treebranch, it was decorated with crosses and was glimmering in the sun. Caroline was tramatized, although not today, she was truely in fear that moment. Running back to town, those at the orphanage scolded her and took the blade away. At night she would try to get it, always being caught trying to do so.

One night, her and two of her friends teamed up to get the blade. Sneaking past the sleeping caretaker, she snatched the blade. Not knowing what to do with it, she hid it in a crack under her bed. When she turned 15 Caroline left the orphanage for GOOD, taking her blade with her. Outside she discovered her mother left to the other side of the world while her father was killed in battle.

Caroline took up a job as a bartender. She socialized with everyone, telling her own stories and hearing many others, this made her a very well-liked popular person around the city. Caroline's life didn't change much after this, in her free time she explores the forests and other areas, chatting with those she knows, practicing with her sword and exercising, this making her a strong and capable person, while still charismatic. Caroline has a knack for arm wrestling, drinking and darts, all of which she is likely the best at in the world.
Gear: Optional
Theme Song: N/A
RP Sample: I was on the Fallout RP as the Gunners and has a RP sample there, can you just go back and find that?
