Henri Duvoux, Sports Report

Groups drawn for 2016 Copa d'Aeia

Lotrič - The groups for the 2016 Copa d' Aeia have been drawn as of today, with some contentious results expected to follow.
Image
The draw, broadcast earlier to record viewership

The draw took place earlier today at the Stade del Rou, with the results broadcast on live television, watched by over 100 million people across the region. As results were announced for the tournaments group stage, fans began to arrive in airports across Midrasia for the coming weeks of football.
Much of the focus at home however was on the makeup of each group, with particular focus on the divisive group B, with the current political situation between Terton and Krieslen expected to a cause for disruption or scuffles between rival fans. The FFA has already assured fans that it is taking a zero tolerance stance toward trouble makers. Similarly the Midrasian police department has assured travelling fans and locals alike that there will be adequate security forces available for each match.

Group A appears to be the so-called 'group of death' for the tournament, with hosts Midrasia fending off against Isolatonia and Rohst, two further prominent nations within the region. Bookies have Midrasia favourites to win the group, although opinion is divided over Isolatonia and Rohst over who should occupy the second slot for qualification. Vilosia on the other hand appear to many as outclassed by their more prominent rivals, with odds for qualification averaging around 75-1. Although we may yet see a dark horse emerge over the next few weeks, during which there are bound to be numerous upsets and surprises around every corner.

Group B is of course the one everybody is talking about, opinion is totally divided about the group although Avecain and Terton appear in a somewhat more favourable position to win if recent history is taken into account. Of course, there is no missing the clash between Krieslen and Terton which will take place on match day 2 against a backdrop of political squabbling and territorial demands. Security is expected to be on high alert for the game, and any results may have dire ramifications. Overall though the group looks incredibly balanced, with every nation potentially in with a chance for a place within the quarter-finals.

Group C is a somewhat quieter group, with Bejarstan and New Goshen appearing as favourites. Many suggest Sagalash may be in with a chance, however pundits appear to have already written off Vrnallia. Yet similar to Vilosia within group A, we may see a few upsets here and there, with Vrnallia potentially challenging their rivals for a position within the quarter finals.

Group D is similarly balanced to group C, with with Yvilonia and Tarasanovia expected to duke it out for first and second place. Wustenland and New Krieslen may struggle against their larger, better funded rivals; but the group is still anyone's for the taking.

Image
The four groups of the tournament

From a Midrasian perspective, chances of qualification appear good, although both Rohst and Isolatonia are expected to put up a good fight. Reacting to the draw Midrasian manager, Klaes Van Emerik said: "this is as good a chance of any for our team to go on to victory. Yes the draw of course could be better. Yes it will be tough. But having seen the team train together, they are more prepared than they ever will be." Midrasian captain Henri Sabon echoed the managers opinion, stating he believes the team to be in with a "good chance" of making it through to the quarter finals. "With the home crowd behind us, we can achieve anything, but we must not underestimate our opponents, they will put up a good fight."

Preparations for tomorrows opening ceremony are now in full swing, with rehearsals already taking place within the Stade del Rou. Tickets for the opening ceremony sold out within a week of opening, with many expecting the stadium to be packed for tomorrows event. His royal majesty King Luix XII is expected to declare the beginning of the tournament, with viewers also treated to to firework displays and various dance routines around the theme of the event, together as one. The marvellous performances expected tomorrow are sure to be repeated in the coming weeks, as football comes to grace the cities and stadiums, and television sets of Midrasia and the rest of Aeia.

Copa D'Aeia 2016 groups announced

The Dragons look to face some tough competition in this years Copa D'Aeia. The draw, which put the Isolatonian side in what has been dubbed the 'group of death' of this years tournament, pits Isolatonia against the formidable Midrasia side, as well as the team from Rohst, another notable team in this years competition. There have been tensions between Isolatonian and Rohstian ultras since the infamous 1996 Copa D'Aeia riots following a match between the two sides, in which tear gas was used to disperse protesters.

Isolatonia's first match, however, will be against Vilosia, whom the bookies have christened the underdogs in the 'group of death'. Current odds set a Vilosian tournament victory at 5000 to 1, and the odds of them not finishing last in the group stages is 100/1. These odds have led to many optimistic Isolatonians staking small scale bets on these odds, following Kallopetri FC's historic Isolatonian Football League win earlier this year. The team were given 3000/1 odds of a League Victory, resulting in near bankruptcy of bookies across the nation.

Kallopetri FC's star striker, Nicolao Gonzales, will be playing centre forward for Isolatonia this year. When questioned about Isolatonia's chances yesterday, the twenty four year old stated that his team has "great character" and that "We have a great chance of getting through. We are a strong side, with strong motivation and even stronger fans".

Many Isolatonians see the opening match against Vilosia as a chance to gain "easy points", though others are begging the team not to let their guard down. "You just don't know with Vilosia", said one commenter on our Friendpad page, "We just can't predict what they have going on behind their closed borders". It is true that Vilosia is a secretive nation, adverse to what the High Conduit of Vilosia described as "degenerate Majulan scum who have turned their backs on Vilos", in a press conference concerning last years embargo on Vilosian trade by Isolatonia following repeated Vilosian military intrusion into Isolatonian waters. Vilosia may have put together a strong side for this years tournament, so our boys in black better watch their backs!

The fan favourite for this years competition is Midrasia, a historic footballing nation with many tournament wins under their belt. Renowned sports commentator Michail Simonides posted the following on social media following yesterday's draw,
"Isolatonia has been given an early opportunity to be knocked out. The Midrasian's are fan favourites... Coupled with the presence of Rohst, this group is going to be rough. At least one formidable side is going to be going home early".

Fans from across Isolatonia have flocked to Midrasia. Current estimates show in excess of 350,000 Isolatonians have booked tickets to Midrasia for during the tournament. Lets hope that they don't have to come home too soon.

CORRUPT OFFICIALS ROB WUSTENLAND OF VICTORY

Wustenland's victory over Yvilonia yesterday was quashed by match officials who ruled a clear goal by striker Andre Kolmar offside.
If there was to be anyone grieving today following the conclusion of Matchday one of the Copa d'Aeia it would be a fan of the Wustenland national team. After putting up a great fight against their opponents from Yvilonia; and the blood, sweat and tears our proud patriotic Wustenlanders put into travelling to Midrasia to support their team, all their hopes were quashed by corrupt officials who ruled a clear goal offside and awarded the opposition two goals, despite one being offside and a clear foul on Joachim Christel by a Yvilonian attacker during the second. Wustenland's president Gottfried Mansnecht has suggested such behaviour cannot stand. "It is unclear to me whether the officials in question have simply been bribed by the Yvilonians to do their bidding, or if they simply have an anti-Wustenlander prejudice. Either way justice must be done, and Wustenland awarded the victory."

In fact reporters on site suggest it was clear from the outset that the match officials and organisers had it in for our lads. The Midrasian's atrocious attempt to recreate our beloved national anthem was a mockery to the Military Marching Band and National Army Choir and a disgrace to our nation. We here at the National Newspaper demand an apology from the Midrasian government for such actions. Match officials then appeared to give clearly biased rulings against our great nation, with defenders Jonathan Trapp and Karl Kruse yellow carded for perfectly good tackles. Furthermore it was noted by several unnamed sources that Yvilonian players were seen taking what appeared to be illegal substances during halftime. Were these performance enhancing drugs? We believe so. Leave your thoughts down in the comments.

We here at the national newspaper hope the match officials soon come to their senses and rectify their mistakes. We demand fair treatment for our future matches during this tournament. Only then will our boys prove themselves as the greatest footballers on this planet, when Wustenland proudly lifts the Copa d'Aeia. Wustenland's upcoming matches against Tarasanovia and New Krieslen are expected to yield clear victories to our superior team, should the rules of the game be followed by all officials. We will see you at the Stade del Rou soon!

TERTON HERALD
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PALADINS WIN CLOSE VICTORY: MORE IN SIGHT
In the first round of the Copa d'Aeia, the Paladins barely managed to win against the fellow Rennekkan nation, Castrix. However, more talked about than Ottomar Faerber's fantastic shot, the only score of the game, is how Terton's victory may have weakened its relations with its neighbors. "We tend to think of the Copa d'Aeia as a time to reach out to our fellow nations and show that everyone likes a good game of football," says Paladins' manager, Frederick Hym. "If I ever caught any of my boys scrapping with anyone for any reason, I'd have them suspended immediately. These games are a time for fun and festivity, not aggressively spreading your political ideas!"
It has also been noted that Hym never had any definite political stance himself.
In other news, Hym stated that he was certain the Paladins would do well in the coming games, despite having only one score against Castrix. "It's really not all that uncommon," Hym stated. "Half the games in the Copa had the same score! The Paladins are only getting warmed up. We'll be in tip-top condition for the very next game, and we'll stay that way! I'm sure of it."
Reporters also managed to get hold of Ottomar Faerber, asking what it was like when he scored the goal. "I had the ball, and suddenly a way opened for me," Faerber began. "It was as though all my life had been leading up to this very moment, and all of Nature knew it, and would not, could not, stop it! I drew my leg back as surely as a hunter readies his gun when the game is in sight, and fired with full force! My entire life went into that kick, all my training, everything that mattered to me--I would have died if I had not scored."
It is common knowledge in Terton that his is how Faerber always talks about his scores.
TARASANOVIA SCRAPE VICTORY AGAINST MINNOWS NEW KRIESLEN
Tarasanovia 1-0 New Krieslen
Tarasanovia has clinched a victory in their first game in Copa D'Aeia against minnows New Krieslen. The Albatrosses managed to beat New Krieslen 1-0 in the 80th minute, with 32-year-old central midfielder Xzavier Armistead scoring the decisive goal. The strike came after a dominant game, where Tarasanovia did well but couldn't finish any chances. This win finds them in second place of their group and with three points to kick their campaign off. Armistead after the game talked about how happy he was to score a goal despite not having a very good season for The Northern Ducks Football Club. "It's lovely to be able to pull this off. I hope we can win more games and I can get back into better form."
In the other group D game Yvilonia faced a mighty Wustenland challenge but still managed 2-0 victors with an arguably more impressive result, though was apparently more poor as a result according to Die National Neitung, who claimed many goals were offside and fouled. This may of potentially happened in some ways, but maybe not as massively as first claimed.
ISOLATONIAN TEAM DEFEATED BY VILOSIA
In what has been a shocking turn of events, the Dragons were slayed yesterday by none other than Vilosia, the so called underdogs in group A. The Isolatonians dominated the first half, with eight shots on target and 65% possession, but frustratingly no goals. The Isolatonian lead continued into the second half. Fans waited with bated breath as Marcelo Romero took a penalty in the 62nd minute, only for the Vilosian goal keeper to successfully catch his shot in mid air. A skilled cross from a young Vilosian striker in the 82nd minute all but sealed Isolatonia's fate. The ball flew into the goal, just out of Leandro Alfaro's reach, sending the Isolatonian fans into meltdown. The few Vilosian fans in the stadium clapped in a measured manner, strictly observed by their representative faith leaders.
After the game, our sport's correspondent caught back up with Nicolo Gonzales, asking for his opinion on the game. "I think our main mistake was underestimating Vilosia" he told us. "We appeared to be the better side. We were in control for most of the first half. I just think we lacked the drive, you know? If we were against Rohst or Midrasia, we wouldn't have taken our foot off the pedal. But we underestimated Vilosia and we paid the price for it. Fair play to them, I say".
Gonzales' team mate, captain Nicodemo Areleous, agreed with his team mate and had the following to add;
We let down a lot of supporters out there tonight. Not because we lost, that happens. No team is flawless. We let down our supporters because we underestimated Vilosia and we did not play as well as we could have. You have my word that we will not make that mistake again
The main consequence of today's matches is that the match between Isolatonia and Rohst will be heated to say the least. Both teams suffered defeats today and as a result will have to fight to remain in the tournament.
AVECAIN EDGE VICTORY AGAINST KRIESLEN
Krieslen 1-2 Avecain
Image
Avecian chance in the second half
Avecain have scored a successful victory against Group B rivals Krieslen in a tight fought match. Avecain started strong with several shots on the Krielsen goal, however their opponents were equally strong, resulting in several counterattacks and scares for the Avecian defence. A yellow card was awarded to Francis Galaim for a foul in the 25th minute. However the resultant free-kick was easily parried away by goalkeeper Fabian Goltefor a corner-kick. The Lights successfully opened the scores with di Oriendente scoring a fantastic strike from outside the box in the 36th minute. The remainder of the half remained tightly fought, with both sides having numerous chances. Despite the Avecian teams efforts, the opposition broke through with Krieslen equalising with a header from a corner-kick within the 41st minute. Despite 3 minutes of added time and numerous attempts by both sides to break the deadlock, yet at half-time the score remained 1-1.
The onset of the second-half looked as though it would be a repeat of the first, there were clear chances for both sides yet ultimately little progress made. A chance for Krieslen came at the 50 minute mark, as a striker found himself through on goal. Fortunately the shot flew over the crossbar to sighs of relief by the Avecian crowd. At the 65th minute however striker Fabian Goltingrandis was fouled by a Krieslen player. Due to injuries sustained during the incident, Goltingrandis was stretchered off and substituted for Marc Maxime a new up and coming player, who had played a successful season with F.C Neuchatel. The free kick taken by captain Lebron hit the wall; however the rebound shot was blasted in by substitute Maxime to make it 2-1. Despite the goal however, the team from Krieslen remained determined to fight on. Both sides had several chances. However after 98 minutes (including added time), Avecain emerged victorious, topping Group B, on equal points with Terton, in their opening match.
Speaking to reporters on site after the match Maxime said the goal was just the opportunity he was waiting for. Manager Tobie Nollinger recognised Maxime's talent, suggesting there was a clear chance for the 26 year old to start in the teams next match. "Its likely that Goltingrandis may be out for some time, but either way I think he [Maxime] has proved himself tonight. He certainly has a place starting in our squad." When asked about Avecain's future chances and possibly going on to the knockout stages Nollinger suggested: "Its clearly possible, who knows at this point, we still have Terton and Castrix to play, and both im sure will put up a good fight." Pundits are certainly suggesting it is possible, pointing to the fluidity with which Avecain played, despite the mounting pressure of the Krieslen defence. Anything is possible, only time will tell how far Avecain goes.
In the other group B match, Terton managed to successfully fend off Castrix, with a goal by striker Ottomar Faerber in the 68th minute. Faerber, who is renowned in Terton his use of simile when describing his goals, compared his shot with a hunter firing a rifle. After the match Faerber suggested his "entire life had been leading up to this very moment", that the goal was a "force of nature". It certainly appears problematic for Avecain if nature is on the side of their rivals, however captain Lebron has suggested that such divine intervention will be no match for the teams skill and determination.
Pluckly Tarasanovia Closely Beat Off Wustenland Challenge
Wustenland 2-3 Tarasanovia
In a very action packed game in Group D, giants Tarasanovia faced off against high-headed Wustenland in a game many have been looking towards. The game started off with Wustenland's captain, Heinrich Jodel, scoring early in the 18th minute to get the game underway. 32-year-old Brayden Harden equaled the scores for Tarasanovia before Jo Howard put the away side ahead. Just a bit after half-time Zxavier Armistead got his second goal of the tournament for him and this turned out to eventually be the winner. In the 88th minute substitute Jonathan Hisk got a goal back for Wustenland, but it was too little too late for the country.
We had a talk with Zxavier Armistead again for his continued terrific performances in the Copa D'Aeia. "It's a dream come true." Claimed Armistead, potentially a bit early, after his game. "For the Northern Ducks this season I couldn't finish for my life - Now though I'm having an amazing tournament and I can only really hope to keep our results and heads up. I feel with a good chance with a great team and that we could really go all the way if we believe in ourselfs and get the results done.
Because of this result, Tarasanovia are confirmed to go through to the Quarter-finals of the championship, and in other news, opponents Wustenland are confirmed to be out of the tournament automatically due to lack of enough points. Also in group B, Avecian are also confirmed to go through, but unlike in Group D 3rd place is still anybody's to take.
For the rest of the group D, 1st place Tarasanovia face 2nd place Yvlonia in their next game. 3rd place New Krieslen also face last place Wustenland. If New Krieslen have 3 points and +3 goal difference to make up, but they could well do it if Tarasanovia win and New Krieslen win, though if Yvlonia win or draw, their automatically through the competition.
ISOLATONIA DRAWS WITH MIDRASIA
Isolatonia have improved upon their earlier performance in the tournament, forcing Midrasia to a one all draw. The match was fairly balanced during the first half, with neither side managing to gain the upper hand. Tensions were high moving into the second half. Both teams fought for control until in the fifty third minute, Isolatonia's newly christened star striker, Nicolo Gonzalez, executed a flawless header, sending the ball flying into Midrasia's goal.
The Isolatonian lead did not last, however. In the 69th minute, de Carvan scored an impressive goal against Isolatonia, bringing the match to its final score. A free kick awarded to Midrasia came close to pushing them into the lead, but admirable defensive work from Isolatonia kept the ball out of the goal. Although Midrasia are a celebrated team, and drawing against them is no mean feat, many Isolatonian fans are understandably worried about their team's future in the tournament. Isolatonia will have to win their match against Rohst, and Vilosia will have to lose to Midrasia, for Isolatonia to move to second place in their group.
We caught up with Nicolo Gonzalez again following the match. "We played well the 24 year old said to us, "But not well enough. We had many opportunities in that match that we just did not take. We really need to step things up for when we play against Rohst. Also, we need to rely on Midrasia to beat Vilosia to bring us to where we need to be".
